nothing worse than people thinking it’s ok to be wildly drunk in public places and bother strangers just bc of a holiday.

First off, happy St. Patrick’s Day everybody!
It’s the luckiest day of the year! At least, that’s what everybody thinks. It’s also the day that everyone has some fun drinking and celebrating, and overall just going crazy. It’s important to be careful out there today, whether you’re into the celebrations or not.
So what’s the fuss all about huh? Well, for me, I only know this information because it’s my birthday. It’s how everyone remembers it, not March 17, but St. Patrick’s Day. So, I’ve always been an avid celebrator of this holiday. But in all reality, this holiday is celebrating the patron saint of Ireland. His name was Patrick (by the end), which is why it is Saint Patrick’s Day.
In lieu of this, why does the rest of the world want to celebrate this? Well, the quick answer is they do it because of the festivities. But it didn’t use to be like this; all of the celebrations were feasts, and this was in honor of their saint’s death. Today, we have the four leaf clover, the pot of gold and leprechauns at the end of the rainbow, all of which represent luck. This holiday is monopolized, spread throughout the media and given an important idea that is only through the commercialization of this holiday and not its original intention.
Okay, but what about the green? Why is there green everywhere? And I mean everywhere. Well, it may be pop culture now, but there was a good reason for it in the beginning. Today, we wear green on the 17th of March so we don’t get pinched. However, it was originally because of the Irish rebellion. Does that mean anything to you? Some, it probably does, but I never learned about it in school, and I’m sure others of you didn’t either.
Basically, what color do you think of when you think Ireland? Most of you probably answered green. Green it is, because during the Irish rebellion, that is what the soldiers wore when they were fighting off the British who wore red. But when the tradition of this holiday began the color was actually blue, not green. It changed, because of the rebellion, and from then on, it is as you see today.
Now the drinking, that’s a different story. Having a good idea of what this holiday is about today what would you say it is? Yup, it’s an excuse to drink as much as you can. If New Year’s is the fancy drinking of champagne, Christmas is the ‘weird’ drinking of eggnog and other spiced drinks if you get the meaning, then St. Paddy’s Day is the day to drink wildly. It’s certainly the norm, and you don’t have to be a rockstar to binge drink today. Although, I would recommend being of age wherever you are.
So, quick recap. Saint Patrick’s Day, is an Irish holiday celebrating some dead dude, who is actually really important! The green is because of a rebellion, the luck means luck and nothing more, and the drinking is just that.
So, maybe you’ll know a bit more you didn’t know about today now and will be able to educate some of those who don’t. And if you already knew most of this information, huzzah for you! But either way, wear the green and watch out for those eager pinchers!
