OTP ship questions

So... this ship questions list has been making the rounds, and since I’m neck-deep in trying to finish up the story for Sam and Benji, I’ve decided to fill out ALL OF THEM. In one go. I’m extra, sue me.

(under a cut cuz I actually like you people) :P

PRE-RELATIONSHIP

1. How did they first meet?

Sam moved to Wayhaven and into Benji’s apartment complex. They didn’t start talking until Sam was getting mugged while on her run, Benji jumped in to help her, and then she punched him on accident. Benji does like to call it “love at first punch”

2. What was their first impression of each other?

Total heart eyes on both sides. They are both total cuties and they were eyeing each other before they actually started talking. Benji thought Sam was a little withdrawn and grumpy, while Sam thought Benji was really weird for grinning like a maniac all the time.

3. Did any of their friends or family want them to get together?

I mean, Tina was the driving force from the very beginning and super invested in those two idiots getting together. Once it was apparent how cute Sam and Benji were together, the entire damn town wanted them to get/stay together. Sam’s cousin Liz was like “please enjoy yourself with the man”. Hell, even Benji’s ex was happy for them!

4. Who felt romantic feelings first?

Benji. The man wears his heart on his sleeve AND is incapable of holding back. He also has more experience with knowing what such emotions feel like so he can recognize them quicker. He’ll also claim that he fell in love with Sam the moment she punched him, so there’s that.

5. Did either of them try to resist their feelings?

Both of them, actually! There’s a time limit on how long Sam will be staying in Wayhaven so both of them knew falling in love was a very bad idea. But they are so well-suited for each other that it was inevitable.

6. If you had told one of them that the other would be their soulmate, what would they think?

I think there would be an overwhelming “hell yeah!” on both accounts, because of how strongly they feel for each other. Sam would feel a sense of relief, because she grew up hearing stories of how her sperm donor (aka bio dad) just impregnated her mother and left her behind, so knowing Benji would actually stay and love her would be a happy news. Benji would be ecstatic to know Sam is his soulmate and would probably tell everybody who stopped long enough to be told. Deep down, he’d still doubt himself and the knowledge, because he has a long history of abandonment. Even with regular reminders, he’d still be afraid that Sam would decide one day that there had been a mistake and leave.

7. What would their lives be like if they had never met?

Sam would become a bonafide workaholic with a limited number of friends - to Liz’s constant frustration. If she managed to find someone that she liked well enough, she’d probably settle down with them eventually, but maybe not feel a great passion for them. Just a decent, average life in California.

Benji would have gotten together with Felix and have a happy, fulfilled life with him. He’d probably get turned into a vampire at some point, too.

GENERAL

1. Who initiated the relationship, and how did it go?

Benji initiated it. Sam rejected the idea of dating at first, but after some cajoling, she agreed to keep going out with him.

2. Did they have an official first date? If so, what was it like?

The first date was very casual and not really an official date - they went for dinner at a crab shack. Their second date was a little more dressy, with a dinner and a movie, and they both put in more effort into everything.

3. What was their first kiss like?

Amazing. Sam got a little tipsy and decided to leave a lipstick print on Benji’s neck as a way of “flirting”. Since the man is a slut for neck kisses, he took that as an invitation to have proper kisses and smooched her senseless right there and then. Sam did NOT complain.

4. Were they each other’s first anything (kiss, relationship, etc.)?

Sam had never had sex with a man before Benji (only had experiences with women), so it was a big deal when it happened. Benji made sure to take it slow and gave her a fantastic first-time experience.

5. What’s their height difference? Age difference?

Sam is 5’10 and Benji is 6’3, so there’s about 5 inches of difference between them. There’s about 2.5 years of difference between them in age.

6. What’s their relationship with each other’s families?

Sam ends up having a decent relationship with Rebecca, after some time. It’s a little difficult to interact with someone who is barely around, but Sam tries to be nice all the same (since it’s important to Benji). She definitely has a much closer relationship with Benji’s found family, Tina and all the older ladies who appointed themselves Benji’s guardians. They all love Sam dearly and the feeling is mutual.

Benji has a fantastic relationship with Liz and her husband/kids. The kids in particular looooove hanging off Benji and using him like a jungle gym. Benji and Liz have this pact of sorts where they would murder a bitch in order to protect Sam from harm - and be each other’s alibi, too. They did start off on a slightly wrong foot, but it got cleared up quickly. That being said, Benji is not fond of Sam’s extended family - they can be challenging.

7. Who takes the lead in social situations?

Benji, always. He’s the resident extrovert and will behave like a shield for when Sam feels overwhelmed with crowds or situations.

8. Who gets jealous easier?

Benji. He rarely acts on the emotion, though. At the beginning of the relationship, he’d just get quiet and in his own head a lot; later on he’d casually bring it to Sam to make sure he has nothing to worry about.

Sam still gets jealous, though it’s not as common. After all, her man is fucking sexy and *of course* women would want to poach him. Gotta stay vigilant.

9. Who whispers inappropriate things in the other’s ear?

They are BOTH culprits of that one. Very often those are VERY explicit things, but mostly it’s just passing comments or even just sexy glances. Those two are *into* each other.

LOVE

1. Who said “I love you” first?

Sam, strangely enough. Having your life flash before your eyes sure makes you more willing to take chances with love ;)

2. What are their primary love languages?

Sam

Give: Acts of service, touch Receive: Quality time, touch

Benji: Give: Quality time, touch Receive: Touch, quality time

3. Who uses cheesy pick-up lines?

Benji, hands down. He’s a cheeseball.

4. How often do they cuddle/engage in PDA?

As often as they can get away with it. They are both touch starved idiots with a variety of abandonment issues, so being glued to each other is a natural state for them.

5. Who initiates kisses?

Benji, more often than not. He craves that physical reassurance from Sam ALL the time.

6. Who’s the big and little spoon?

Benji will want to be the little spoon as often as he can get away with it. He loves being held and having his hair played with, so settling half of his body into Sam’s lap is literally his favorite thing. That being said, when they sleep, he’s usually the big spoon.

7. What are their favorite things to do together?

Hiking and being active. When Benji was recovering from his stint at the hospital after Murphy, Sam would go with him on hikes to make sure he wasn’t pushing himself too much physically. Then they never stopped. Benji loves going places to photograph Sam for the millionth time. They will also go to the gym together, if their schedules align. They also love doing the couch potato things together: watching movies/Netflix or him playing video games while her feet are draped all over him as she reads her current murder mystery.

8. Who’s better at comforting the other?

Sam might be just a little better at it than Benji, but only because he has shitty impulse control and often will blurt out things he shouldn’t. Sam will generally sit and listen to Benji, cuddle him, pet his hair, etc. Benji will do similar things, but his need to crack jokes about inappropriate things gets him in trouble relatively often.

9. Who’s more protective?

Benji. He would NOT hesitate to murder a person in cold blood to keep Sam safe. It’s not exactly a healthy thing, but we all know the man needs therapy.

10. Do they prefer verbal or physical affection?

Benji is a cuddle monster and would be wrapped around Sam 24/7 if allowed. That being said, since Sam is a little reserved about verbalizing her feelings for him, anytime she says “I love you” first, he feels absolutely ecstatic.

Sam’s family wasn’t a very outwardly affectionate people, so she’s not used to either type of displays? That being said, since Benji is always a walking furnace, she absolutely loves when he gives her cuddles. It’s her favorite thing.

11. What are some songs that apply to their relationship, in-universe or otherwise?

12. What kind of nicknames do they call each other?

Benji calls Sam “baby” all the time. She usually just calls him Benji, but also occasionally “mi carino” or “my love”. Pretty sure he dies every time she calls him “my love”.

13. Who remembers the little things?

I feel like they’re both pretty good about remembering the little things. Sam is better about remembering significant dates, but that’s because she has a digital calendar and isn’t afraid to use it :P

DOMESTIC LIFE

1. If they get married, who proposes?

Benji is the one who proposes. It happens on a random night while getting ready for bed, while they’re both in the bathroom in their bedclothes. It’s adorable and very them.

2. What’s the wedding like? Who attends?

The wedding would most likely happen in Wayhaven. I can’t imagine either Benji or Sam wanting a huge ceremony, but since they’ve become the town’s favorite lovebirds, it kind of goes out of control. Once some of their supernatural friends get involved, it really goes a little crazy. It ends up happening at a city park so it can fit all of the attendees. Some of Sam’s family flies in from out of town. Tina is Benji’s best “man” and Liz is Sam’s matron of honor. Benji absolutely loses his shit when he sees Sam in the wedding dress walking down the aisle and totally disrupts the ceremony to try to kiss her out of turn. Other than a ridiculous number of people there (seriously, probably at least half of the town shows up), it’s a pretty chill party, with lots of remembrance of Sam’s mom and Benji’s dad. Let’s just say it was a good day :)

3. How many kids do they have, if any? What are they like?

There are a few AUs for these dorks, but in most of those they have two kids: a girl and a boy. Ella is precocious, outgoing, clever, and energetic. Liam is a giant cuddle bug with a gorgeous smile and a big heart, who prefers to tinker with things in a workshop than get involved with his older sister’s shenanigans.

4. Do they have any pets?

They eventually end up with two dogs that they take on their hikes. They only have one dog for the longest time because apartment living isn’t exactly conducive to pet ownership. Once they get a house, they expand their menagerie. There might be a stray cat they sorta adopt, too.

5. Who’s the stricter parent?

Sam, hands down. Benji is a giant pushover for his wife and children, and would let his kids climb all over him, as long as they were happy.

6. Who worries the most?

That really depends on what about. Benji is perpetually worried about keeping his family safe and provided for. Sam has anxiety about a variety of small things and it’s not hard for her to worry about random stuff.

7. Who kills the bugs in the house?

Depends on the bugs. Benji loathes spiders so Sam’s in charge of removing those. Sam absolutely cannot deal with centipedes and roaches, so Benji gets to kill those.

8. How do they celebrate holidays?

When it’s just the two of them, they either go visit one of their friends in town and spend it with them. Once kids arrive, they do holidays at home and tend to go big in the food department. Rebecca is always invited, but it depends on whether she can make it that time or not. They like it when holidays are warm and filled with happiness/laughter.

9. Who’s more likely to convince the other to come back to sleep in the morning?

Benji. If he’s not working that morning, he would not want to leave the bed and would do everything in his power to keep Sam in there.

10. Who’s the better cook?

Sam. Benji isn’t terrible at it, but Sam is so much better that he rarely bothers with it. Also, Sam tends to treat cooking as stress relief (chopping veggies is great anger management), so he lets her do the thing in peace. That being said, if she’s too tired to cook, or it’s been a long day, or the kids are demanding her attention, Benji feels comfortable enough in the kitchen to take over and make dinner.

11. Who likes to dance?

Sam, hands down. Her mom loved to dance so she grew up around it. Unfortunately, Benji has two left feet so she doesn’t have many opportunities to flex those muscles (outside of occasional slow-dancing in the kitchen). She will occasionally drag Tina out for a night of dancing and go to a salsa club. It can really hit the spot.

Lao American, Child of an Immigrant

Hello–I’m half Lao, half White. My mom immigrated here from Laos in 1980, when she was around 8/9 years old.

Beauty Standards

A lot of Lao beauty standards are very Eurocentric (and thus colorist), due to the colonialism present at the time. Big eyes, pale skin, and small noses are desirable, all of which are not common to Lao. We have big, flat noses, light to dark brown skin (or mixed kids like me, who really good at tanning), and small eyes. The pale skin is the most harmful–things ranging from lighter makeup than natural to straight-up mild bleach in lotions or creams.

Food

In my opinion, Lao food is the best stuff on the planet. A lot of SE Asian food is similar, but not the same. However, I’ve found that the Lao and Thai have the spice kicked up to an 11. My mom is an amazing cook, having learned from her parents. Some of my favorite things to eat are laab, sticky rice, grilled chicken, mango sticky rice, papaya salad (literally the SPICIEST THING I HAVE EVER EATEN. No joke), eggrolls, springrolls, and my grandma’s homemade beef jerky.

One of the first things we’ll do, and I’ve found is true for most other Lao and Thai people I’ve met, is offer someone food if they’re over at our house. Hospitality, hospitality.

History

Laos is mainly a victim to geography and circumstance. Without an outlet to the sea, they’re pretty much cornered every time a conflict comes round. We’ve been colonized by the French, so recently that many of my grandpa’s formal papers are in French as well as Lao.

My personal family history is very interesting, too. Due to the political upheaval in Laos, caused by the Vietnam war and a load of other problems, my grandparents decided it was best to flee the country. All of their kids were born in Laos, and when they escaped, the youngest was two years old. They escaped in the night over the Mekong River into Thailand, risking death by drowning in the river, swollen by the Rainy Season, or being shot by both Lao and Thai border guards. They were in Thailand for several months, then sent to the Philippines, and after a year in refugee camps, finally arrived in California (where I was born). Because of how young they were when they left, my uncles and mom can’t read or write Lao, but they all speak it fluently. My grandparents lived there until this past year.

Home/Family life/Friendships

Family is important in Laos, but also pretty loose. “Family” could be anyone. People who grew up in the same village, or maybe old time friends, could be considered family. In fact, for ten years I grew up thinking that I had an extra set of second cousins when we weren’t even related at all. One of my great ??? grandparents had 11 children. My grandpa comes from a patchwork family with several different mothers, having at least 10 children.

Identity issues

Because of my Swedish last name, people know that I’m half white, half something else, but they usually can’t pin it down. I lived the first three years of my life in California, surrounded by my grandparents, uncles, and attended a Lao-speaking Christian church. When we moved to D.C., the Lao population was significantly lesser. There are lots of other ethnic groups here, making the diversity one of my favorite things about D.C., but very few Lao. Sometimes it feels like I’m not Asian enough to participate in spaces for PoC, like I’m intruding. But I also know that I’m not 100% white, and that being biracial makes me no less of either than the next.

Language

My parents both speak Lao, my mom because she was raised in it, and my dad because of his missionary work. He can read and write, and speak fairly well. None of us kids can speak, read, or write, but we can understand small bits and pieces and little phrases, but not enough for conversation.

Things I’d like to see less of

Biracial and Asian fetishism is definitely annoying.

In Asian circles, I’d like to see waaaaaay less colorism and antiblackness. Just because we’re also not white, doesn’t mean we get a free pass on racism toward other groups.

In Western media, I hate the white savior complex, “Smart Asian” stereotype, and blatant forms of racism (“ching chong” ring a bell?). Something more minor, but still annoying, is “can you say something in (insert language)?” because they’re usually wrong, and say Korean or Vietnamese (I’M NEITHER) and because that question is so painfully vague. I could call your mother a water buffalo, for all you know.

Things I’d like to see more of

SE Asian representation in general. We tend to be sidelined, or ignored. I wish there were more SE Asian creators out here, for us to finally have our spotlight.

This is meant to be speculation on if Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould were to delve more into Tuco and his back story, how it might go based on the path of Meth already covered in the events of Breaking Bad. Tuco is such an interesting villain, that I hope like the other characters in Better Call Saul, that we might get to know him better. Even if it is just through the introduction of new characters to flesh him out and his rise to being the way he is.

Could Tuco’s mother have done meth while he was in utero? How might have this affected his personality and behavior growing up? Is this why he has such an attachment to his Abuelita? Was she the one who raised him after his mom (possibly) died? If so, from what? Childbirth, overdose or something else? What was his father like, if he’d been around in his early years?

One theory is that Tuco’s Mother could have picked up the habit from his father, especially if Tuco’s Father served overseas in Korea or Japan during the early 1950’s. At the time was the beginning of injected use of amphetamines and heroin among the men, who learned it themselves while stationed there. And when they were sent home, some of them may have brought back that knowledge and habit.

If so, and if Tuco’s Father is a candidate for another big bad antagonist in Better Call Saul, I would like to add then that this has potential for a common link to the Korean War between said character and Mike. They could have both served under similar circumstances, but came out of the war very different with drastically different views on things.

Another way in which Tuco’s Mother could be introduced to methamphetamine in the 1950’s would have been with the drug being prescribed legally by physicians for things like fighting depression or even as a diet suppressant aid.

And which portion of the population were more likely to be prescribed amphetamines etcs during this period of time? Women.

Even to the point of being known and used non-medicinally by college students, truck drivers and athletes to help them ‘perform better’ and ‘be more alert and awake’, under the name, Methedrine.

Could Tuco’s mother have done meth while he was in utero?

The theoretical evidence suggests it may be possible. If he was between 35 to 40 years old during the end of life in Breaking Bad, in the year of 2008; then based on that we can assume he was probably born between to 1964 – 1969.

So, why is this important?

By 1970, the U.S. government had banned Meth as an illegal substance in most uses. Following that came the rise of American motorcycle gangs, who controlled the majority of making and selling the drug, for the next 20 years. Historically, it was only by the 1990’s, as we are somewhat alluded to by Nacho, that Cartels and other Mexican drug trafficking organizations took over massive cooking operations in California.

(In which case, as shown in Walt and Jesse’s time, we then see Meth become even more popular in the United States, before it gained a footing in Europe. Etc. – accurate to the history of the substance.)

So it could be surmised that whether during the beginning or end of 60’s years for meth, it was a volatile time of change that likely led to a spike in activity when there became a higher demand. That activity could have included his mother, theoretically. Another interesting thing, Methedrine was sold in easier-to-inject ampoules until around 1963 to 1964. If Tuco is closer to 40 in Breaking Bad, then 1963 would have given about a year, roughly, for Tuco to be conceived. And that time span might have added even more of a sense of urgency for addicts to get what they wanted during that year.

And if Tuco’s mother used meth or another drug like cocaine during her pregnancy, it may have affected his personality and behavior growing up.

Studies suggest that children whose mothers used Meth during pregnancy might have issues with development involving the frontal cortex. In some instances, they may react more emotionally, particularly with defiance and aggression; suffer from anxiety/depression, and difficulty in resisting an impulsive reaction to something going on.

(This could be supported by Nacho’s statement that “Meth brings out the worst in people.” With a possible suggestion that not only were some of the issues we see later with Tuco’s behavior were amplified by his drug use, but that they could have been under the surface. Low key for most of his life?)

Is this why he has such an attachment to his Abuelita? Was she the one who raised him after his Mom (possibly) died? And if so, from what? Childbirth, overdose or something else?

Which also begs the question: if Hector and Tuco’s Father grew up in a similar manner to him, Marco and Leonel; what was their father, Tuco’s Grandfather like? I mean, we’ve already seen in the past just a sliver of what Hector put the Cousins through that led to them being who they turn out to be. One thing we know of Tuco is that when he was growing he was into boxing (which, once again, would have been one of the few places for him to channel aggression etc in a socially acceptable manner) I think that’s about it for what we know in that regard... right now, anyway.

[Grant it, I’m not up on Season 3 yet, I am working on it though]

But what if his Dad did come home from the war with PTSD or with any other number of things; on top of a bad upbringing with theoretical abuses like what Hector showed in Ep. 307 “One Minute”? What could that have been like for Tuco to grow up in? Whether he had his Mother around or not? And could his Abuelita have been the only one in his life who protected and truly loved him, and gave him some sense of safety as a child? Is that why he is so loving with only her, compared to anyone else he’s seen in contact with?

And is all of this stuff that (could have) happened, what led Tuco to seek out an escape with the help of Meth (and other drugs?) in the first place? Is he a tragic product of not only addiction but also of his upbringing? Beyond more than what we originally thought and were led to believe?

We met my Junior year (his Senior year) of high school, and instantly became close. He was the fastest I had opened up to a person ever. It just so happened though, that that was to be one of the worst years of my life. I was already on a spiral when my ex and I decided to try the friend thing again at the beginning of the year. One of the complaints he had had was that I was supposedly a controlling (he needed to look in the mirror) arrogant bitch, so I decided to just be pliant so the friendship would work. My ex, on the other hand decided that meant free reign to walk all over me and treat me like worthless garbage, but I let him for the sake of the friendship. He even had my friends joining in, and it only got worse when my (now ex) best friend had her eye on him. My friends have always been more of a family to me than my real family though so I thought they must be right, and started believing it. This infuriated Eli that they were doing this, but he saw and understood it was going to make me worse so just continued to try to put me back together. By Spring Break, all my friends were gone and had taken my exes side, and my "best friend" was dating him. My anxiety had also surfaced at this time so when my dad took us to California for Spring Break to meet his very Hispanic (NO PERSONAL SPACE) cousins, I was ready to cry the first day, and he kept yelling at me that I was being rude and stupid but I was terrified. My aunt was the only one even trying to help me as she had the similar issues when she was younger. By the time we returned home, my dad was highly irritated with me, and, because I tie my shoes a little odd, decided to say "I wish you did anything normal!" I had a breakdown when I got back to my mom's, and didn't talk to him for three weeks. No one questioned why I came back wearing long sleeves either except for Eli who pulled me aside at Vocational and pulled up my sleeves before I could escape or BS my way out. He was furious, but in something I hadn't seen in two weeks, not at me, but at my dad and "friends", and that was the first time I ever heard him cuss. He insisted on driving me home after school that day, and apparently stole my blades when I was in the bathroom as I couldn't find them the next break down. He stayed there for hours letting me cry, and helped me clean up and make up when my mom came home so she wouldn't yell at me. He then found my ex the next day, and brought him down a few pegs in the cafeteria. When a different "friend" I foolishly gave a second chance humiliated me at prom, he was there to pick me up and put me back together. When my Video teacher was out casting me, and I was falling down a whole, he could tell just by how I typed a textvand was there after school the next day to emotionally help me. He made sure I felt safe, was listened to, and felt loved. Thanks to Eli, whenever I had bad thoughts, I had someone to make me say, "No. He'd be upset if I did that." He made sure I knew someone gave a damn whether I was dead or alive, and for that, I thank him. Thank you so much, Eli. Everyone, make sure to thank the Patton in you life. Find them, and charish them.

A Link to the Past: 1965 Dodge Dart GT Convertible

The lineage of Chrysler’s A-Body platform starts in 1960 with the introduction of the compact Plymouth Valiant. Like Ford’s Falcon and Chevrolet’s Corvair, it was a response to the success of the Volkswagen Beetle and to a degree, American Motor’s American, relaunched in 1958. In 1961, Dodge got its own version of the Valiant, the badge-engineered Lancer, which lasted just two model years. To say that the Valiant and Lancer were stylistically challenged might be an understatement. Their lines, produced by Virgil Exner’s studio, were among the Forward Look’s most controversial, especially when compared to the more conventional route taken by Ford with the Falcon.

In 1963, Chrysler’s A-Bodies, the Valiant, and the Dart, which took the place of the Lancer, got a much more conventional look with both marques offering a full range of sedan, hardtop, station wagon, and convertible models. And when speaking of the convertibles offered from 1963 to 1966, you’ll be hard pressed to find one as handsome as this stunning 1965 Dart GT model owned by John Campbell, a car that stood out to the Mopar Muscle team when we attended the Mopar Fall Fling in October.

Like the case for many of us, Campbell’s dad was a Mopar guy, and it influenced his automotive tastes at a very young age. “Dad always said Chrysler had better engineering,” says Campbell. “His favorite car was his 1957 Dodge D500 convertible.” Other family Mopars included a 1965 Dodge Dart convertible, just like mine, a 1970 Plymouth Fury Custom Suburban nine-passenger station wagon, and five different Dodge trucks, starting with a 1976 Dodge Power Wagon W200 and ending with his current 2009 RAM 3500 chassis cab with a 6.7 Cummins and six-speed manual transmission.”

“In the early 1970s, we lived next store to the head bodyman for Reedman Chrysler Plymouth in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, at the time one of the largest dealerships on the East Coast,” recalls Campbell. “His name was Dick Philhower, and he taught my dad to do bodywork in our driveway. Later, my dad taught me. Being from Pennsylvania and having no money, I had to weld new sheetmetal into most of the cars I owned, including a 1974 Nova, a 1976 Subaru, and a 1966 Mustang I restored for my college girlfriend.”

Campbell’s first Mopar was a 1976 Dodge van he and his buddies bought for $400 to take on spring break. It was rusted out and had a tired 318, but the five drove it from Penn State to Florida for spring break and slept in it for a week. It was blue — mostly — and they painted the Penn State logo on the side and got cheers when they rolled into every spring break town in Florida.

Campbell’s second Mopar was a 1983 Plymouth Horizon he bought at the State of Pennsylvania fleet auction. It had the 2.2L engine and ran pretty well after he pulled a Rubbermaid trash can full of emission controls off it and swapped in a non-electronic Holley carb from Pick-Your-Part.

The 1976 Dodge van got Campbell to California for his first active duty Air Force assignment at Los Angeles Air Force Base. Once in California, he traded the rusted-out ’76 Dodge van for a rust-free ’73 Dodge van with a 318 and three-on-the-tree for $450. It was someone else’s forgotten project. It still had the porthole window and the tufted Naugahyde interior, but the tropical murals had long since faded off the sides. He put it back together, painted it, redid the interior, and used it on lots of camping trips to the Sierras, and even Cabo San Lucas. Then there was a void in Campbell’s Mopar timeline until 2009 when he bought this 1965 Dart GT convertible, and yes, there’s a direct connection to his dad’s Dart.

“In June of 1965, in the same week I was born, my dad bought a brand-new 1965 Dodge Dart GT Convertible from Carbone Dodge in Utica, New York,” recalls Campbell. “It was gold with a pearl white interior, a 273 V-8 and a four-speed transmission. Shortly after I was born, dad loaded mom and me into his new car and drove to my grandparents’ house. I guess he was feeling a bit left out when all the in-laws were more interested in the new baby than the new car. Eventually, that car began to rust, due to the harsh winters in upstate New York. Dad sold the car to his brother, Dave, so he could get a larger car for the family. Dave drove the car several years and sold it to their cousin, Jughead. Eventually, Jughead parked it in his backyard in western Pennsylvania, and it rusted into the ground.”

Fast-forward many decades later and Campbell was browsing the Internet looking for examples of a Dart that matched his dad’s car. Late one night he stumbled onto an eBay listing, same year, same model, same color, same interior, and same engine. The only missing component was a four-speed transmission. He had no intention of buying the car … at first. But as the week passed and the listing end date approached, he couldn’t resist the temptation. He submitted the winning bid, packed some handtools, flew to Sacramento, and met the owner to purchase the car. Campbell hopped in the car and drove it 450 miles to his home in Southern California (how many of us have done something similar?). It made the trip with no major issues.

Research on the car revealed that it was built at the Hamtramck plant in Detroit. The build date of the car is June 18, 1965. “I was born June 28, 1965,” notes Campbell. “I know nothing about the first owners, but I do know a little bit about the most-recent owners. The car was purchased by a couple in the early 1980s in La Cañada Flintridge, California, near Pasadena. They fixed up the car and drove it regularly. When they retired, they moved to Eldorado Hills, California. After the husband passed away, his wife continued driving the car well into her 80s. I guess she and the Dart were a familiar sight, driving around El Dorado Hills. When she passed away, her sons decided to sell the car. I remember it being very important to them that the car go to someone who would take care of it and restore it.”

Campbell bought the car in 2009. He drove it for three years before starting the restoration. For him, it was fun to drive it to work or park it at a grocery store without worrying. Since the restoration, it’s mostly been to car shows (like the Mopar Fall Fling, where we first encountered the car), club meetings (he’s a member of the very active South Bay Mopar Club in Torrance, California), and cruises. He typically drives it once or twice a month, and the rest of the time it stays in the garage under a cover.

The first big job was the replacement of the floor. The car looked really solid from underneath, but when he pulled up the carpets there were pinholes and really thin metal. He purchased an old Millermatic 200 MIG welder on Craigslist and taught himself MIG welding. All his previous welding was Acetylene gas welding, which really warps the metal, or stick welding which burns right through sheetmetal. The donor floor came from a wrecking yard in eastern Washington. He drove the car for three more months without any interior before tearing it down for the full restoration. He mounted the car on a rotisserie he also found on Craigslist.

“I did most of the bodywork myself,” says Campbell. “This included metal, filler, primer, and blocking. The color and clear coat were sprayed by Mike Phillips at LnM Auto Body in Inglewood, California (lnmautobody.com). I met Mike at a meeting of the South Bay Mopars Club. I was there with my ratty old driver, and he pulled up in his freshly restored 65 Dart GT convertible just like mine. We never made it into the meeting and spent the entire time talking about our cars. Mike graciously allowed me to do a lot of the work at his shop, and he taught me so much about the finer points of bodywork and paint. After lessons from Mike, I did the color sand and polish as well. They say you meet the best people in the classic car hobby. Mike is proof of that.”

Campbell notes that parts are much harder to find for early A-Bodies than for later years. He purchased two parts cars and also found numerous used parts on forabodiesonly.com, Craigslist and eBay.

He also notes that the car has a numbers-matching engine, rebuilt to Commando specifications by L&R Engines in Santa Fe Springs, California (www.lnrengine.com). They used reproduction domed pistons by Rebuilder’s Choice and an Isky E4 camshaft. The factory specification for compression ratio is 10.5:1, but after careful measurement of chamber volume, dome volume, bore, head gasket diameter and thickness, they landed at 9.6:1, which is perfect for premium unleaded.

While Campbell still has the original automatic transmission, he opted to install a newer 904 automatic from a 1983 Chrysler Fifth Avenue. “There are just so many improvements made since 1965, but most important for me was the lockup torque converter and wider gear ratios,” says Campbell. “I would have loved to upgrade to an overdrive transmission, but there are no options that fit the tunnel without cutting, so this was the next best thing.”

Campbell continues with more details on the rebuild of the mechanical components. “For the rear end, I retained the original 7¼-inch rear axle for originality and lower unsprung weight. But I did install a cone-style Sure-Grip differential from a later-model Dart. The axle has all-new bearings and seals, and I adjusted the bearing pre-load, backlash, and gear pattern. It’s quiet with no more clunk going into reverse. I upgraded the front brakes to the factory Kelsey-Hayes four-piston setup, which first became available in 1965. The front suspension is stock with all-new Moog parts.”

Campbell talks about some of the cosmetic issues that were addressed during the restoration. “There is a lot of aluminum trim on this car, as well as some stainless. I had the aluminum anodizing stripped at Custom Metal Finishing in Gardena, California (1800deburring.com). I purchased an 8-inch buffer at a swap meet and watched all the videos I could find on buffing and polishing. Then, I spent a solid month removing the dings, sanding and polishing both the aluminum and the stainless. The aluminum then went back to Custom Metal Finishing for bright dip anodizing. It doesn’t shine as well as the stainless, or even bare polished aluminum, but it’s protected from oxidation, and it’s factory-correct. Exterior chrome plating was handled by Yolanda’s Plating in Los Angeles, California. All the plastic bezels in the dash were re-chromed and detailed by GCAR (gcartrim.com). The upholstery is from Legendary Auto Interiors (www.legendaryautointeriors.com). Much of the wiring had brittle insulation. Rather than try to save it, I sprung for all-new harnesses from M&H Electrical Fabricators in Santa Fe Springs, California (www.wiringharness.com).”

“I media-blasted every nut, bolt, and fastener in the car. Then I sent them out for re-plating. The black phosphate parts went to AllBlack Co. in Santa Fe Springs, California (ww.allblackco-inc.com). The zinc and yellow dichromate parts went to Westcoast Metal Finishing in Los Angeles, California (www.wcmf.net). The most challenging aspect of that process is keeping track of where each bolt belongs. They start out in labeled baggies, but they all get mixed together for plating. I took pictures of every bolt, so I could get them back into the correct baggie and onto the car in the correct location. The car was off the road for three years, and I was still working on it quite a bit in the fourth year. They’re never really finished, are they?”

At the Mopar Fall Fling, we were attracted by the car’s stunning color combination, and we weren’t alone. Campbell says that at shows, this is what really draws attention to the car, the gold paint and the white pearl interior with the contrasting saddle carpet, extending up the door panels and seat backs. It’s a look that belies the Dart’s economy-car roots.

As the photos illustrate, the car has an almost perfect stance — and that was no accident. We’ll let Campbell explain. “I looked at a lot of Darts, and I always felt that the front wheels looked bigger than the back wheels. Probably some sort of optical illusion due to the different wheel arch shapes. Because of that, I chose a staggered wheel-and-tire combination with 15-inch wheels on the back and 14-inch on the front. Both are 60 series tires, so the sidewalls are the same. Most people don’t notice the different sizes; they just admire the stance. The wheel-and-tire combination also gets a lot of compliments. I went with Cragars for two reasons. First, there are limited options for the small bolt pattern. Second, you could actually order your 1965 Dart with the Go Go package, which included 13-inch Cragars. So, in a way, they are sort of stock and definitely ‘period correct.’ The red-line tires get a lot of love, and I like that they match the red engine color.”

When asked what he likes about the car, here’s what Campbell had to say on the subject. “I love the size of the car. Dodge called it ‘new kind of compact in the large economy size.’ It’s really not that small, and I think a B-Body would feel too big. I also love that I so rarely see early A-Bodies. I’m almost always the only one, except maybe at Mopar-only events.”

“I don’t think early A-Bodies get the love they deserve. They’re not high-dollar cars, so they typically don’t get the level of restoration that an E-Body or 1968-1970 Charger might get. I hope my car changes that perception in some small way.”

Campbell’s stunning 1965 Dodge Dart GT convertible should certainly change that perception. At a show with many noteworthy and otherwise special Mopars, this little Dart GT clearly stood above all others, testimony to a job well done… very well done.

When producing these stories, I rarely ask to drive the subject car I’m featuring. The reason is simple: one of two things can happen, and one of them is bad. But there was some strange pull coming from John’s car, so at the end of our photo session I asked and he said, “sure.”

I think the pull was that 40 years ago, just after graduating college I owned a 1967 Plymouth Barracuda convertible. It was a 318 automatic car, and it’s one of the few cars I really regret selling and wish I had kept.

So sliding behind the steering wheel and turning the key, there was some sense of deja vu. The sound was familiar, but once we turned onto the street, the rest of the driving experience was not. Where my Barracuda was at the time a 10-year-old used car, John’s Dart was like driving a perfect time machine. Everything, and I mean everything, was a tight as a drum, a stark contrast to my decades’ old recollections of my Barracuda. Every aspect of the driving experience was of driving the car off the showroom floor. The only thing that could’ve made the drive any better, on that Saturday at sunset with the top down, would have been to have Heart’s “Barracuda” playing through the Dart’s center-dash speaker coming from New York’s premier Top 40 radio station at the time, WABC.

I recently had a car insurance policy cancelled due to not sending off my documentation (driving licence & counterpart) in time. So, I started to apply for a new quote, and it asked if I'd ever had a policy cancelled, I ticked yes, and in comparison to begin with the quote doubled. This was because of the cancelled policy. I assume they do this because people have policies cancelled due to non payments, however, obviously mine wasn't. Should I hire an attorney for this?, I purchased a policy online a few months ago within the first few days that i had this insurance I had a storm and damaged my vehicle (minor) with hail damaged I submitted out a claim, appraiser was sent they covered the loss sent a check to me, now i take it to the bodyshop and try to have it fixed but they need a supplement, they contact insurance co. but insurance co, makes many excuses over this they state I dont have full coverage which I do, and it was verfied with them that i do, the next few weeks pass and then I finally get a call from a manager at the insurance company stating that they mistakenly sent me out a check because I made a false claim report, they said that they can tell by my pictures before policy was bought that vehicle had damaged (which is an excuse of denying supplement) and stated the the adjuster overlooked everything point here is that insurance co, cancelled my policy by stating underwriting issues, so now Im without insurance coverage, the manager also stated she reported this to the texas state but mentioned she could not put a stop payment on the check and that I could still use it to fix the car or cashout the check... I am really dissapointed at how all this was handelled, Im thinking about getting an attorney, I already discussed and this issue with the Insurance company and Im basicly told that I lied about the claim and they end my call... Should I wait to get an attorney or should I just get one and go from there? I believe this is bad faith insurance coverage, What should I do? Hello Yesterday, I passed my driving test and am, of course, really looking forward to driving. I spotted a Renault Clio I liked with a 1.1 litre engine. It's nothing special, just a first car (which would mean the world to me) I was always aware insurance was going to be a struggle. I insured myself with Provisional Marmalade while I was still learning, so I could drive my mum and dad's car as additional practice. Prov. Marm. have another part to their company, Young Marmalade for newly passed drivers, apparently giving you the best quotes, however I couldn't find anything under 3000! I am a 17 year old boy living in the Northeast of Scotland, one of the most common places for a collision in the whole of the UK. However, I am not in anyway a dangerous driver. My dad has been driving for 50 years and told me he feels very safe while driving with me as a learner, and I always stay within the speed limit, with the exception of if I don't realise I'm doing over the limit. My mum and dad have been saving some money for me for about 10 years, but it's only about 1300, and I don't have any more money apart from that. It's not going to be enough and I have really been let down by the insurance, because that Clio I saw was 600. My bf and I have been intimate for the past almost 3 years, which is how long we've been together, we've only used protection a few times.
