I have to go with more than one. so there's where the mind wants to go/where you let it go by I the mighty, one of my favorite albums of all time, and I'm going to say it how it is, I LIKE THE COLORS. the blue-ish imagine with the red omg. look at it pls.  Also fandom by waterparks looks SO COOL. again the COLORS  and I love the art for Isola by Kent.  I recently discovered you wouldn't believe what privilege costs by civilian and I think that cover is pretty cool too.  well and then there's petals for armor by Hayley Williams, the cover art is so fucking powerful Jesus I get goosebumps just thinking about it. in case you don't know about it, long story short: there's been a lot of shit going on in Hayleys life in the past. relatable imo. then they made after laughter and its been like u know what fuck it we’ll just laugh and dance through the pain. together. and I LOVED the vibe omg it gave me so much. but for Hayley it kinda postponed REALLY dealing with shit. she came home from touring with AL and she also got divorced during the AL era and everything's shit and out of all that came petals for armor. and in it she reclaims femininity, being alone, being powerful, being a women, everything. and ah yeah we were talking about the cover art, the cover is her, having a line of squares on her face, three of these squares are tattooed on her fingers though bc its where her ex husbands initials used to be that she got covered up. WHAT A MOVE. THE POWER.  (if anyone is interested in hearing Hayley talking about/explaining all this, I really recommend watching her interview with zane Lowe. its SO GOOD basically free therapy) How much did your parents influence your music taste? a. lot. my dad listened to a lot of “dad rock” you may call it, I guess a lot of dads listened to stuff similar to this. Deep Purple, the police, simple minds, Green Day, Billy Talent, the scorpions and things like that. what influenced me the most tho was the beatsteaks (german band, very good), die Ärzte (german band, very good) and LAST BUT NOT LEAST the fricking blues brothers. my favorite movie (not the 2000 remake, go watch that in hell where it belongs), a great, charismatic band, unbelievable live performances. very big WOW from me.  Do you own any vinyl? don't get me started omg. I DO. I am so I love with this album. SO. in love. and one day, when I was in Berlin to see palaye royale, back when we had concerts, I walked by a random record store and they have like 4 records left bc they were closing or idk and the only one displayed in the window was this one. tell me about FATE  Do you own any cds? not many. sometimes when im at the store and I see ones I know or like, I just buy them and put them in me moms car bc I want her to listen to them. or when I find a cd by a smaller artist I enjoy, I buy it just to push the nachfrage. R.E. Seraphin molds tiny shapes into big songs.

Though he’s been on the scene for a while now (with different bands) I hadn’t heard the music of Bay Area musician R.E. “Ray” Seraphin until this year via a cassette called Tiny Shapes via Paisley Shirt Records (more on the label below). His first real band was Talkies, which he discusses below (and I have enjoyed), but he seems to have really come into his own this year with that cassette and a new EP, A Room Forever, which came out just a month or so ago. In his music you’ll hear influences of 80’s jangle pop as well as some deeper post-punk stuff (and for more current stuff I hear whispers of Dean Wareham and his bands and Wild Nothing). Reading below he seems very well grounded and seems to have a great attitude about everything (even not being able to play shows during a pandemic or being in a writing slump). I think once this is all over this guy will go on 5-year tour and gain lots and lots of new fans. In the meantime do check out his stuff, you won’t be disappointed.

   Where did you grow up?

Berkeley, CA. The area I grew up in was filled with Victorian homes and dilapidated industrial warehouses. My family home was walking distance from a lagoon and an old, rusty set of train tracks. I felt I lived in an unremarkable college town. There wasn't much activity outside of the school. I discovered Berkeley’s storied political and musical history much later in life. Now, of course, there are many books written about Berkeley, but I thought it was a kinda nondescript city as a kid.

 Do you remember what band made you fall in love with music?

Dating myself hard here, but I remember being floored by The White Stripes’ “Fell in Love With a Girl” video when I was 11. The Top 40 music making the rounds on VH1 and MTV at the time was beyond dreck — a lot of Train, Staind, Matchbox 20. The White Stripes were the first band I was exposed to that made succinct, catchy, no-frills music. I was genuinely enthralled. Plus, the Lego animation in that video still holds up.

 Was guitar your first instrument?

I started on bass. My first instrument was an extremely cheap, pointy BC Rich knockoff monstrosity. I believe I was 13. I had no idea how to play and little interest in learning. For the first year, I putzed around with a Pro Co RAT, a wah pedal, and a tinny-sounding Crate practice amp. I just tried (and succeeded in) being as obnoxious as possible. When I started writing songs, I eventually graduated from playing bass poorly to playing guitar poorly.

 Tell us about your first band.

My first band that played shows was called The Phil Spector Shotgun Experience. That was primarily a cover band I put together with my high school buddies and my mom. We covered Radio Birdman, the Pink Fairies, and the MC5; we also had an unwittingly hilarious original called “Nitroglycerin Man” — the first song I ever wrote (maybe I was subconsciously inspired by Wages of Fear). At some point, we kicked my mom out of the band and started playing as the Impediments. That band kicked ass — we made pridefully dumb American punk music. That was also my only band to sign a record contract, so it’s quite possibly been downhill from there!

 Tell us about The Talkies (unless that was your first band mentioned above).

Talkies (no article!) was a group I started in 2014 as a vehicle for my songs. My previous bands had been more of a shared vision, so Talkies was my first foray into being the lone genius of a group. The sound was mostly drawn from what is disparagingly known as power pop. Basically, I was heavily into the band Shoes for a few years.

We released a few albums and EPs. Did a couple short tours. During that time, the project was dragged from the Bay Area to Austin and back before I finally, mercifully pulled the plug last year. It was time.

 When did you transition from Talkies to the solo stuff you’re doing now? Did it feel comfortable?

Talkies had run its course, but I had a smattering of songs leftover from that project that I wanted to record. Around that time, I learned my good friend Jasper Leach (Burner Herzog) was getting ready to skip town. I had always wanted to work with him and, seizing my final opportunity to do so, we banged out my début, Tiny Shapes, last summer. The whole experience was fairly serendipitous. The stars aligned for that one.

I wouldn't say the process was comfortable. Recording the album felt necessary, urgent — almost compulsory at times. My heart was ready for a new project and I truly wanted to center myself for the first time. I’m glad I did. This is the happiest I’ve been musically in some time.

I love the songs on A Room Forever. How did they come together?

So glad to hear that! I got asked to contribute to a compilation back in April. With the deadline approaching and inspiration still eluding me, I took a glance at my bookshelf, noticed a particular Carson McCullers title, and whipped up “Clock Without Hands.” After my trusty collaborator Owen Adair Kelley added his parts, I felt we had stumbled upon a great sound. I tried to harness the creative spirit and pushed myself to finish a few ideas buried deep in the recesses of my Voice Memo app. I got friends Matt Bullimore (The Mantles) and Yea-Ming Chen (Yea-Ming & The Rumors) involved, and that was that. No great origin story — just pure American ingenuity and elbow grease.

 Tell us about Paisley Shirt Records. Who runs it and how did you hook up with them?

Paisley Shirt Records is simply the man, the myth, the legend — Kevin Linn. He is a San Francisco-based musician and artist who records as Sad-Eyed Beatniks.

I met him when I was looking for someone to release my album, Tiny Shapes. He had just put out a tape by Hits — a great local band featuring some friends of mine — and I felt a kinship with his roster. So, I reached out to him. Foolishly, he agreed to put out my album and we’ve been inseparable ever since. Solid dude. High marks.

 Have you done any solo tours? If so where and how did they go?

Ha! No. I had only notched two shows as R.E. Seraphin before the pandemic hit. Likely not doing anything beyond the odd live-stream show for a while. That said, if any tastemaking European touring agencies are reading this — give me a ring!

Essentially every act associated with Paisley Shirt Records and/or Mt.St.Mtn. My bias is strong.

 Do you feel that the pandemic has helped your songwriting or hindered it (if either)?

A li’l column A, a li’l column B. I’m a natural procrastinator, so I’ve definitely savored the lack of band practice and shows (things that often necessitate new material). That said, I doubt I would have finished A Room Forever had I not been quarantined at home. Without having many obligations and without being able to leave my house, music definitely became my raison d’être for the first time as an adult. I was fortunate to not be deemed an “essential” worker and to be able to focus energy on my passion momentarily. Silver lining.

 What’s next ? A new record by the end of the year possibly?

Hopefully continuing to promote my music and play shows on the ol’ webiverse. A Room Forever will be receiving a small vinyl and tape pressing at the end of September via Mt.St.Mtn. and Paisley Shirt Records. So, looking forward to that.

I was creatively tapped for a few months after A Room Forever. While a new album is possible, it’s not probable. I am plugging away at a few tunes, but I tend to conceptualize albums as a thematic whole and not as a collection of songs. Haven't stumbled onto my next Big Idea yet. Don't count me out, though. I could see myself dashing off a covers album for sure.

 What is one song you wish you’d written?

Too many to name! I’ll reframe that question to mean a great song I could see myself capable of writing in an alternate time, place, or dimension. Maybe one of Peter Holsapple’s songs from The dB’s — “Black & White” or “Neverland.” Also: anything by Wreckless Eric or Martin Newell.

Just finished reading an interview with the great James Purdy, and thought this quote summed up iur current political climate well:

ok so here’s me hyping up Camila for longer than anyone asked for but this album...is just so good and when she said visual I’m like yeah ok but... I SAW so many things and so many lyrics/songs reminded me of things that have happened to me and I’m like, you know what? time to overshare

TRACK 1 SHAMELESS: ok so obviously I’ve listened to this before like a million times, but when I first heard it, I was very much like... I don’t like it. and then I listened to it again and I’m like haha nevermind I was wrong (i do this all the time don’t @ me I know I suck) the way she says “shameless” with that rasp? screaming her lungs out? yeah, bitch, I feel that. I hear that. and just the whole vibe of YEAH I feel this way and WHAT ABOUT IT.

favorite lyrics: “Now that you have me, do you want me still?” “I’m tired of loving somebody that’s not mine”

TRACK 2 LIVING PROOF: Every performance of this...makes me love it more and more. The choir singing hallelujah...gave me the VISUALS bc ya girl grew up Catholic, and I couldn’t help but imagine that Easter day where everyone is praising and saying hallelujah and it’s just such a pure JOY. and with the God references and “being sent to save me” just getting major church vibes. AND her high notes in the chorus...we stan a queen with TALENT. I love how she references hands a few times because I just love when you can communicate something just through touch. I think that is truly the deepest form of knowing someone.

TRACK 3 SHOULD’VE SAID IT: ok now I’m just going to sit here with my jaw dropped open because SIS said what we’ve been saying for SO LONG. The theme of “change” is so strong in this, and I just love how she portrays it. And her talking about the songs not sounding the same...she’s literally like yeah I get you wrote songs about me, but have you heard of imessage? a phone? But this is the kind of song that I want to scream at the top of my lungs and dance to in my living room, but, alas, I cannot relate. I can’t get one person to love me, how tf would I get 2? And the way she says “so sorry” like she...is not sorry. and I LOVE IT and it just really drives the point across, like, I’ve moved on, you didn’t say anything. 

favorite lyrics: “baby, he fell from grace, landed right in your place” “I wish you could turn back time, and hold me closer, instead of your pride” (OUCH BABY YES SING IT)

TRACK 4 MY OH MY: catch me shakin my ass to this till I die. I just love the FEEL of this. and her YELLING “I swear on my life that I’ve been a good girl” and the “Tonight I don’t wanna be her” like yes bitch let her be BAD for a night baby you GO GIRL. Listen, I will never get sick of the falling for a bad boy narrative. Sign me the fuck up, every damn time. Like, yeah? I’ve been good, time to be bad bitch. and her LAUGHS during the rap. I love her wow. The chorus is just so CATCHY. It’s just sooo bad boy narrative, my parents don’t like him, not being a good girl for the night, and again, always a hoe for that. ALWAYS.

favorite lyrics: “I said, if he kissed me, I might let it happen” “She know I’m a call away, she can drop a pin and I’d come meet her” 

TRACK 5 SENORITA: I’ve talked about this 5 million times, but I’m a proud mom so here we go again! The fact that they collabed again, was enough to fuel me for years, bc my prime was during IKWYDLS. What a good era. This song makes me feel DAMN SEXY. I want every song to make me feel this way. every time they say “oh la la” just send me to my grave. and shawn’s “call” during the chorus...speechless still. I love a good friends to lovers (in song and IRL we love that for them). I just love the aspect of yeah it’s hard to leave you but every time we touch just reminds me that this is all worth it. AGAIN with the TOUCH being just the most intimate way of knowing someone. 

favorite lyrics: “her body fit right in my hands” “you say we’re just friends, but friends don’t know the taste” “cause you know it’s been a long time coming, don’t you let me fall” 

TRACK 6 LIAR: this bb was my fave when it came out with shameless. I LOVE the whole theme of I said one thing but now you’re changing my mind and making me seem like a liar. I also love the trumpets. I love a good trumpet in a song if it’s used well. AND with the whole, yeah I’m a liar, and what about it? I like clapping along to the bridge in the car. and then fuckin dancing to the chorus. peep me screaming this in my car all the gah damn time. also, the lying to yourself? the worst kind. and this song just being the RECOGNIZATION of yeah... I am lying to myself. you KNOW? like that “oh fuck” feeling, like you’ve been denying it and denying it and denying it and finally you’re just like...oh shit. and then you just fuckin GO FOR IT because you realize it now and now we’re making up for lost time. and then the final “cause my clothes are on the floor” jaw DROP first time hearing that like yes baby. and I usually skip instrumentals at the end of songs bc I usually think they’re stupid and pointless ope but THIS is the only one I don’t skip because it’s too damn catchy

TRACK 7 BAD KIND OF BUTTERFLIES: my heart hurts, honestly. like in that first chorus where she’s like you’re going to hate me after you find this out. just BREAKS me. it’s just very stuck between a rock and a hard place. she wasn’t going to win this fight. it was going to hurt no matter what she decided. she was going to hurt someone she cared about no matter what she chose. the way she says “tonight” with that note run yes baby yes. and like living proof, I love the high note chorus. and the way she says “the bad kind of butterflies like when you have something to hide” like I FELT that shit. those kinds of butterflies are the freaking WORST when you just know you have to tell someone about something because it’s just eating you alive. her voice just perfectly portrays the feeling this song encapsulates. 

favorite lyrics: “don’t look at me while I’m breaking” “I understand if you hate me” “I know I said we were friends and when I said that, I meant it, somewhere between now and then it became more than just a friendship”

TRACK 8 EASY: out of her songs that came out before the album was released, this was my favorite. just...i get so speechless and I have no words, it’s just so beautiful. like having someone who loves you, who sees your flaws, and doesn’t freaking care. like that first verse is like “yeah we both know I got flaws but you love me anyway.” and the whole thing of really, really knowing someone and really, really loving them is just so damn heartwarming. and feeling hard to love? yeah, Camila, I GET THAT. someone find me a man who feels this way about me. and just having someone...who loves you...until you can love yourself... I want one. and again with the TOUCHING, I see a theme here baby and I’ll talk more on that later. that bridge just freaking hits me and when she sang this on SNL I could just SEE how much this song meant to her and she looked so content singing it. 

favorite lyrics: “You tell me that you'd rather fight than spend a single peaceful night with somebody else” “tell me with your hands that you’re never leaving” “All I know is you saved me and you know it” 

TRACK 9 FEEL IT TWICE: this...hurt me. because this is my worst fear. like having someone fall for you, and you don’t feel it, and then suddenly to be in love with them and for them to be like I’m sorry but I don’t feel that way anymore. and I just love that this one is a lot less of “you fucked up” like should’ve said it and more like “I hate that things had to happen this way and I don’t want to hurt you but I can’t do anything else.” it’s heart-wrenching. and just WISHING that this wasn’t the case, but it’s just how it is. because that’s how love works. you can’t force it if it isn’t there anymore or was never there at all. and keeping the distance because there’s nothing else you can do and it’s the only option because there’s just this tension no matter what you do. because it’s there no matter what. and the PARALLEL of “how can I be your friend when I know the way you taste” and “but friends don’t know the way you taste” in senorita makes me think that she was writing this song while she was writing senorita and that’s why she added it in later. but pertaining to my life... I don’t relate because I feel everything like 8 million times and I catch feelings for anyone who looks at me and I go back and forth on crushes all the time (there are like 5 coming to my head rn wow I am the worst).

TRACK 10 DREAM OF YOU: I like the music in this one a LOT. I feel this shit in my SOUL. and “he’s a right answer” reminded me of the most recent episode of The Good Place (iykyk). also, I don’t know WHY but I love the line with “a confessed sinner” bc, again, ya girl grew up Catholic. he got that post confession GLOW. that “I just got everything off my chest, and I feel GREAT.” and this one, with all she’s doing all day, is dreaming of him, yeah I am a hardcore daydreamer. so that’s me hello. and the transition of “I dream of you” to “I dream with you”...take my heart and throw it at a wall. the DESPERATION in “please say you dream of me too” like PLEASE tell me this is mutual because you literally take up all my time so please tell me you feel the same way.

TRACK 11 CRY FOR ME: this high key reminds me of “Dead” by Madison Beer. but anyways. it’s so SASSY and I LOVE IT. I just love the feeling of someone moving on first, and then the other person moving on, and then the first person being like oh shit what you moved on what. like just wanting someone to HURT because what the FUCK? like why do you gotta do this bro? and just the yeah I know I shouldn't feel this way but fuck it. and I love that just lie to me. like you know what, tell me you miss me, so I can feel good about this. and the screaming in “HOW CAN YOU BE OK” like BITCH I’m HURTING so CRY PLEASE

I love how it’s soft? but also, not soft at all. like FUCK this love. the building walls just to watch them fall? like yes, sis I just wrote a poem about this a few months ago bc it is me. like that person, you built walls up before and they just keep knocking them down. and then you regret it, every time and build them up again (s/o to my shit middle school friend yike) and just the feeling of getting pulled in this cycle over and over again. you can just HEAR the desperation in her voice in parts of this and I love when you can hear that. TRACK 13 USED TO THIS: pull out your tissues ladies. I was most excited about this one, and she PULLED THROUGH and lived up to my expectations. I’m always a sucker for the whole vibe of “I hated this place but now I have this special memory there and now I love it.” the transformation from hate to love in so many ways. to find a person who does that, it just doesn’t happen a lot. now time to unnecessarily connect it to my life but not really because ladies and gents, I fell for my best friend. he was the most amazing guy ever. and he was my best friend and suddenly it was like...oh fuck. and the line about whispering his name differently and can’t you hear it? just reminded me of him right away. because of that FEELING of seeing them and knowing you have these feelings and being like...can you hear the change in my voice? (he didn’t btw. that was sad. this song will be “what could've been” for me. lol. bye). and the “feeling” with that touching again HELLO. and the drink clinks in the background love that. friends to lovers? yeah, sign me the fuck up. and I love the use of “definitely” like that hesitation of yeah it’s going to take me a sec but I’m DEFINITELY getting used to this.

TRACK 14 FIRST MAN: ok. I know I said grab your tissues. but here’s where you really need them. when I say I sobbed, I freaking MEAN IT. like I was getting ready for school this morning at 6 am while listening to the album and it was only me and my dad awake and this just hit me so hard. I’m super close with my dad, so I really really feel this. Once the song was done, I went and found him and I was still crying and he’s like WHATS WRONG and I gave him a hug and I tried to explain what it was about and he’s like yeah no won’t listen to it. going to cry. then I texted him later and he listened and you bet my father cried as hard as I did. he literally said he was in the bathroom trying to compose himself (spoiler, my scary dad is soft af but don’t tell anyone and expose him. literally the other night i said i probably cry every day and he said yeah me too). it’s so soft, and just, yes this is happening, but that doesn’t mean I’m cutting you out of my life. like this man is everything you ever wanted for me, and I know this is damn hard, but it’s going to be worth it. and the transition of spending all the time with family to spending time with this man you want a future with. and like y’all know that breaks a parent’s heart but at the same time, it’s all they want for you. and the progression of just being with that guy and then to the wedding day. and the part where he says she’ll always be his little girl. ugh, this whole song is my dad and I love it and hate it because the amount of tears I’ve cried today is unhealthy. and in general, I just love how soft this is and you can just hear the love in her voice. FINAL THOUGHTS 1) I AM SO HAPPY WITH THE WHOLE ALBUM. I love all of these songs so much, and they’re all so VISUAL just like she said they were going to be. I love when you can see a song. That is just so damn powerful.

2) THE THEME OF TOUCHING. guys, I am O B S E S S E D with this. like I said before, I think it is such a RARE form of intimacy and love for someone when you can communicate something with a touch. Like that hand on the shoulder or on your back or knee or whatever. but just KNOWING what they’re saying. I love how she addressed it multiple times and you see it weaved into so many songs of that touch communication.

3) I saw this on twitter, and I think it was part of an official review or something. But the journey of “hey I’m falling in love and here are the trials and tribulations of it” and then ending with “I can feel this way because you taught me” is just...so amazing and powerful.

born in chengdu, china, but his mother moved them to new orleans when he was three

he’s a member of 7-member boy group cherry (3 years) and 10-member co-ed group trap (1 year)

unlike most of his members, he wasn’t scouted on the street. actually, huan waited and auditioned for two different companies while they were doing int. auditions when he was 13 and 15, but despite getting through both times his mother never let him go to korea to pursue it 

it took him another year of begging for her to let him do it tbh so she pulled her savings and put him on a plane and uhhh as they say the rest is history!

jk, he got through, everything is good, he debuted at 20 after 4 years of intense training 

his boy group has super cute concepts though and as much fun as he’s having, it really isn’t huan’s style. he’s out there on stage wearing cute ass pastel outfits and blowing kisses into crowds but he’d rather harmonise about sucking dick on 3 different tracks

tbh that’s why trap kind of exists? everyone in trap is a member of other groups or a soloist usually known for being cute, but their concepts are hella dark & mature

both groups are currently on an extended hiatus because of individual projects; acting, comebacks, etc

originally, huan was supposed to take online classes in a different subject but bc he’s so free atm, he’s decided he’s good to physically attend school for a while. his management might pull some strings and get it switched to an online degree if anything in his life changes, but for now... he’s here! uwu

he studies vocal performance because he lowkey misses the intense vocal training from when he was a trainee & also bc it ensures he practices while being away from his groups

Languge you speak/ are learning: I speak English and have taken french for 8/9 years and lived in france for a couple weeks.  I’m not really learning other languages but I kind of pick up on bits and pieces of other languages that I hear, and I watch a lot of foreign movies and tv shows so sometimes I like think in this language called Korfrenglidutchese XD.  Basically I know random words/phrases/exclamations in Dutch, Spanish, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Italian (I only know the Italian prayer my papa taught me and the curse words he taught me, even though I’m Italian XD), and German.  And it gets hard when in French class I can’t remember the English or French word for blood, and all I can think of is the Korean word...  Stuff like that.  (even though English is my first language XD)

Random Fact: I made a fool of myself on live tv XD  (but that has also not been my first time on tv lol)

Sherlock Four

It’s a strange day at the office when one moment Paul Weller is sitting next to you, dressed as a Viking and the next you’re playing the violin in a mental asylum opposite Benedict Cumberbatch. Strange, but brilliant.

I had bumped into Mark Gatiss months earlier whilst walking the dogs, and he had gleefully forewarned me that season four, episode three would involve a LOT of violining. He wasn’t wrong. I mean he wouldn’t be - he should know.

A few weeks passed and a voice message came up on my phone. BC. Benedict. He had left a lovely message, asking after my wellbeing, my family and whether I’d be able to coach him in Ealing today. On the set of Doctor Strange. I like to think I played it cool, and I’m going to keep telling myself that. I was out with the dogs at the time. I should point out that I had been home in between these events, I don’t just wander the local parks, hoping for some work on Sherlock, (although that tactic has proved quite fruitful of late). Time was of the essence so I skipped home, swapped the dogs for my violin and headed to Ealing, in my muddy paw mark adorned jeans. Yeah. Super cool and not at all like a swamp creature.

Benedict needed to learn three pieces, one of which wasn’t yet written. He swished off set and called me into his dressing room to recap on all things violin. “Don’t touch the beard!” pleaded his makeup artist, “he’s back on set any minute”. His hands were covered in scars, which he insisted they sprayed with fixative away from me, what a gent. We just got started and he was called back on set. He offered me his dressing room while he was on set and to make myself at home. Tilda Swinton appeared In the doorway asking if I knew where Benedict was. This is always happening to me at home. Over the next few hours of grabbed moments, as well as in Cardiff on the set of Sherlock, and once at his house, we managed to work out 1) what he needed to play 2) that there was one hell of a lot to play and memorise whilst also delivering lines in some intensely emotionally charged scenes and 3)that he is a perfectionist and holds himself to the highest standards at all times.

But we knew #3 already.

Meanwhile David Arnold had met up with Ben Caron, the director to discuss the best way to approach the filming of this sequence. It would take some doing but it could be done.

I was coaching Benedict in his Sherlock trailer, with Ben Caron and David Arnold. We tried out timings to see how to fit the music with the dialogue to make sure we hit the right point in the music at the right time for the script.

For the first time on Sherlock there were to be two people playing the violin. Sherlock, and his sister, Eurus.

I was called by the lovely Siân Brooke, for some coaching at RADA. Benedict and Siân were both equally trepidatious of the huge task ahead of them, and concerned to find out how the other one was faring. Siân had played the cello on a film before, so had some experience of playing a stringed instrument.

Despite Benedict and Siân being exceptionally fast learners, coaching was hard at first because the final big duet hadn’t yet been written- this scene was scheduled to be filmed near the beginning of the whole shoot, so David Arnold and Michael Price, the composers on Sherlock had only just discovered they needed to write this epic duet at the same time as I was meant to be coaching. But there was a lot to be done anyway- recapping on stance and how to hold the bow, what angle to hold the arms and wrists etc. As with previous screen coaching, I’d say it’s 70% choreography, 30% actual playing and 10% bad maths.

Once the duet was written I picked some small ��key’ passages of the music for them to learn. Learning the whole duet as well as the other two themes, ‘Irene’s theme’ and ‘Eurus’s Theme’ would be a huge ask, what with having to learn the violin from scratch and everything. I recorded video clips for both Siân and Benedict to help them practice in between lessons. Because they had LOADS of time to do that. (None).

The final scene of the series was to be a 360 shot of the two duetting together, tentatively at first, in a question and answer conversation of sorts, then beginning to build. It’s a beautiful piece of music, perfectly conveying all the shifting emotions of the series, gathering strength until the full orchestra joins for the rousing Sherlock Theme

Filming

The atmosphere around the sets was very warm and familial, people bringing in kids and swapping baby photos, handing around biscuits, that sort of thing.

But when I was taken onto the actual set for the first time, Eurus’s cell- I felt a cold shudder. That Arwel Wyn Jones certainly knows how to design a set. All cold, grey surfaces, no windows or door handles and 360 degree security cameras really created a chilling atmosphere. I was fitted with a radio in-ear monitor so that I could hear the cues from Ben, the director.

The first thing to to be filmed was Sherlock’s reaction to Eurus’s playing. Benedict asked that I play the theme there live in order to help him cry. Sweet revenge for last time when he made me cry: previously on A Scandal in Belgravia, his tearing up when playing Irene’s theme had made me tear up - which was good because the alternative would be bricking myself. I could get quite nervous in these situations - there are a LOT of people involved on set, and they all fall silent before the director calls “set, and… action” - but he is an utterly captivating actor, he draws you in so that everything else drops away. You forget yourself and all that’s left is the moment. Ben Caron helped create this warm atmosphere on set, by being incredibly calm and friendly whilst being clear about what he wanted. I was grateful given the pressure everyone was under that he wasn’t one for barking orders or steamrollering anyone. When I didn’t know what a particular visual cue was (I didn’t have a script- but there’s a scene in Eurus’s cell when Sherlock enters for the first time. She is playing a tune- Sherlock steps forward, the lights change, Eurus plays angrily, he steps back and she resumes playing the tune) Ben patiently and calmly explained those cues and we carried on- it felt like no biggy despite the massive time constraints he was under. It makes for a good working atmosphere and I’m sure it means that things get done more quickly and to a higher standard because people aren’t loaded with any unnecessary extra stress.

We all rushed off with an early end that day because Wales was playing Belgium in the quarter finals. We won 3-1 and there was rainbow over Cardiff (my second favourite type of bow.)

On the second day we were shooting close-ups for the big duet. Depending on the shot, Either Sherlock or Eurus would play the theme alone, following my movements. The final day of violining was the final duet scene again in 360, but this time they were filming full-length shots. The biggy. After all the planning and rehearsals and coaching and memorising and camera rehearsals this was it. I’d play in the eyeline of Sherlock and Eurus, because I had the track in my in-ear monitor, so they could keep in time with that. As the camera spun through its 360 movement I sometimes had to move to avoid being in shot. To their huge credit- and despite the considerable stress of the task, let alone of the scenes and plot line and all the acting- they were so patient and diligent and just totally on it. Of the violin scenes- this was the one everyone was most worried about. Once it was in the can, cheers and whoops were let out (but in a Welsh way, ŴP! ) Benedict and Siân had done an amazing job. The cast and crew then erupted into a big chorus of Happy Birthday for Ben Caron’s 40th. The relief. And the cake. He said that successfully completing that scene was the best birthday present he could have hoped for.

Recording the music

Once all the filming and editing is completed- the music is recorded. We knew we’d need someone other than me to record Eurus’s violin parts to the picture, as she had a Stradivarius and had taught Sherlock how to play, so their sounds would naturally be quite different from one another. I knew that my long time band-mate, Tania Davis would be perfect, so David Arnold asked her and she gladly accepted. Tania and I have been playing together for 17 years *cough* ( www.bondquartet.com ) and we have a natural rapport. She is a stunning player and has a beautiful violin too. Set up with two music stands and a screen in our own little space ship in Air Studios, we were set to record to the picture. We do this for a clean recording with no distracting, or unwanted background noises and because during the edit things can change synch and be slightly out of time with the picture. For example they might choose a shot because the actor’s performance is the perfect one- but the violin isn’t quite in time. Indeed, a childhood folk song was added after filming had ended, which we had to match to existing shots of a different theme being played. All fun and games!

We ended the afternoon on the first take of the duet, when Tania’s E string broke on the final chord - which spookily was the initial promo picture for this episode. It was obviously meant to be!

My dear 샤샤샤 Let me introduce you to Sungjin, Dowoon and Wonpil of Day6, (in a nutshell) (+Bonus tidbit abt Junhyeok)

While Day6 debut in 09.15 with Congratulations, they’ve been around long as JYP’s “Vocal Group” 5Live for a little bit longer.

5Live had originally 5 members: Sungjin, Jae, “Brian Kang” Younghyun (this is where that started, btw), Wonpil and “Junhyuk” (more popularly romanized as Junhyeok) This is their Predebut Showcase and if you listen at :10 you can hear Jackson from Got7 screaming “화이팅!”  They were active during 2014, though, and released some singles, one especially notable is called Lovely Girl. (it was an OST) Not too much later on, JYP decided to add a member and turn it into a band.

You said you know a little bit about Jae and YoungK, so I’ll skip those, since I’m sure you knew that Jaeyung was on KPOPStar back in 2012, and that YoungK was in 3rdDegree in Toronto,Canada with his friends there.

That leaves us with Sungjin, Wonpil, Junhyeok, and Doswoon Dowoon.

Sungjin is a ball of sunshine wrapped in stress and dad jokes. Accidental meme when he doesn’t intend to. Very organized and very funny. In my opinion, he seems like a younger version of Onew from SHINee, where he seems like a laid back leader, and seems kind of goofy and funny, but he’s taking care of these kids with so much care and precision.  Sungjin loves his bike, whichis named Richard, and said he used to ride it often. He’s named all of his instruments.

When Sungjin gets angry, or stressed his eyes kind of pop out wide and he tends to brush his fingers through his hair a lot (it kills a lot of fangirls in the process) Personal Sungjin story time: at one of the live day concerts I attended, YoungK of all people was enticing fans to ask for an encore of 2 more songs. Sungjin’s eyes got wide and he was like, “You guys first asked for one! Then you got greedy and started going two! three! five! Shall we make it five?” and then when the final song came on, he was brushing his hands through his hair, eyes wide, and he kept saying ,”진짜 마지막, 진!!짜!! 마지막 ” or “This is really the last one, it’s really the last one.”

Sungjin is such a sweetheart and makes sure everyone is set on stage before going and he makes sure everyone cleans up well and goes home well (personal experience, I have no reference for that)

Next up we have WonPil, who is roommates with Sungjin.

우리… ㄷㄷㄷㄷㄷㄷㄷ (I’m shivering)

I have described Wonpil as 100% Sinshine (sinning sunshine) because he is, quite literally, the best of both worlds. Fans in general will call him the sunshine of the group, and that’s not wrong, but it’s also not completely right. Having met him up close, I had made that same terrible mistake. Wonpil likes to dote on Dowoon a lot, and though they deny it, they’ve slept in the same bed together, even though they’re not roommates. (Don’t worry, if you hear beeps at the beginning of the VAPP video, that’s perfectly normal. It’s just Day6 being Day6 and not knowing how to use VAPP properly. It’ll go away after they realize.) Dowoon tries to deny it but Wonpil is all for it. I see nothing wrong with cuddle times. *shrugs* Their interactions are very genuinely-friend like, and you can tell that they both really care for each other a lot.

Wonpil’s computer also has lots of fansite sitckers on it! To me he seems like the person who care a lot about his fans, and cares generally about everyone’s feelings. Sensitive wonpil, who dresses so very well all of the time. Wears black turtlenecks most of the time.

Wopnil has some powerful vocals, and has a higher tone in his voice, but actually YoungK might be able to hit higher notes than him. Wonpils’ voice is more soft where I feel like YoungK can project his voice more- doesn’t make him any less of a vocalist. Honestly, WP is some gold.

I’ve also heard him curse in a concert before. A few times. It was great. Nobody was expecting fiesty!Pil to come out. Nobody was allowed to film, so I don’t have that reference either. I wonder if it’s on the Day6 concert dvd…ㅋㅋㅋㅋ i doubt it.

My encounters with Wonpil…. omg… ㅋ The first time I went to a live show, Wonpil gave me THIS FACE. He tilted his head back and looked down at me in the crowd (bc he looked at my tol blonde friend first and then he spotted the smol vampire next to her) and he GAVE A SMIRK AND THEN LICKED HIS LIPS and then I was like okAY I’M GOING TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STAGE and that’s how I became a YoungK stan. :) I’m sure he didn’t do it on purpose but that’s what I got, homie.

We have Dowoon right after! Our deadly drummer.

TBH. Dowoon is a cutie but a bias wrecker. Everyone stans Dowoon. Honestly, Dowoon gets THE MOST screams at concerts because you cheer for your bias, then you cheer for Dowoon 2x as loud. ISTG that goes on in every concert.

Anyway, Dowoon is ¾ths fluff and ¼th muscle. The Makne of the group but don’t let that fool you!! He probably works out every day and says it’s no big deal. His biggest fan is YoungK these days, who acts like his own little cheerleader.

Dowoon actually attended the Busan Arts College. Both he and Sungjin talk with a slight Busan accent, though Dowoon has more of an accent than Sungjin these days I feel. He is such a precious thing and sould be protected at all costs.

Except when this happens. (There’s a video floating around somewhere)

All in all, Dowoon is loved by everyone, but truly loves his pets and his parents the most, I swear.

He plays the drums and literally keeps the group together and on beat. Also has written notes of reminders on his drums about beats and whatnot. Dowoon appears like a very patient person, and follows to instructions well. Always tries everything he does 30000%, even when it might seem hard he gives it a go and doesn’t give up. Truly a hero and an inspiration.

I don’t have many stories about Dowoon, except that he always acknolwedges fans, and that he sang so beautifully at their concert and I was graced with his voice twice. And he’s getting vocal lessons these days!!! I’m !!!

Last an certaionly not least is our former bb Junhyeok.

Junhyeok used to be our piano man, and main vocals. Before Junhyeok left, I don’t remember hearing Wonpil a lot, but now Wonpil has time to shine. TBH, Junhyeok used to live close to me in Korea and I would see him in cafes frequently. He’s a very quiet, yet sociable dude who enjoys time both with and without people. He strikes me as the kind of guy who is modest but wants to get attention for his works. While the rumor of his leaving Day6 was due to his relationship with a fan, I don’t think that’s the true case. Whatever the case was, JYP terminated his contract, and he signed up with a new band, and then another band, which he is now a permanent member of called Be-Belossom. (You can find him and all his members on instagram! They’re very sweet and they’ve responded a couple of times to people I know and myself).

this past week and weekend have been so powerful

a bit depressed on weekends.. but wow so on monday i had an amazing day so a play for extra credit with stephen and elena and me and stephen kind of cuddled idk everytime we are together we are very touchy and i love it bc it means nothing we just love being touchy then that day i grieved.. i started tearing up thinking about my brother.. i thought of the song dear prudence at first bc the sun was uptake sky wa blue and those are  lyrics from dear prudence then i thought about how i with i could sing that song to my brother especially when he was battling with depression and then i thought about how i needed to hear that songng when i would battle with depression too and how i wish i could just be an older sister again and influence him and show him everything and everyone I've learned since being here and the day was gorgeous it was a beautiful n=monday sunny day and the air was just right with a light breeze and sunkist and the trees gistling in the backyard while i grieved then i thought of th song mother natures son then made some connection that he was making a connection to me bc i thought about where is he do i really connect with him is he still here and when i was singing it these lyrics stop out “lying on my field of grass- mother nature/s son... all day long.. i sit here writing songs for everyone .” and it kind of spoke to me .. like he spoke to me.. saying he's waiting for me in this heaven that i promised us.. a field.. and he's writing these songs all day long for everyone.. for me..thats how we communicate.. its so beautiful and amazing.. bc thats how we were communicating.. and at first for dear prudent i almost played it on my phone but then thought for some reason it just sounds more beautiful in my head.. he could have been singing it to me... and that sunday the day before there was intense yoga where i felt him playing guitar for me.. it was incredible.. and i thought back to all these memories with him and started tearing up from how powerful the corpse pose was... the song sounded something he would play.. and i kind of felt him playing it.. for me.. everything.. the style.. all of it. sounded like him. and so i played mother natures son on youtube to hear the lyrics and then dear prudence came on right after that.. like he clicked it for me.. are we communicating? i think so .. after that i went into my room but felt so energized and power and good and was touching cory when i walked by him and was just so full of light wand when i walked in the room elena was crying next to stephen and i hugged them but when i was walking towards the room i was contemplating just a bit if that experience was real.. then when i opened the door i randomly looked down on the floor and a small metal C was on the ground.. it made me smile.. and it didnt surprise m much.. for i was already in the magic of our dimension of reaching each other. i thought it was the C to his the necklace i made for myself in tribute to him but it was part of my earring that was missing the part that made it an o.. so it was a c.. and i placed it next the c i have on my crystal.. ad then later that day i met up with joshua and we tried drumming on a beautiful hill facing one side the city then the ocean but mosquitos came and we left and went to cafe rev and it was beautiful elektra was there and i made friends and saw friends and it was beuaitufl bc elektra and josh got to talk about the music school and a lot about incorporating music and yoga and ashram and we told her idea of having a drumming meditation yoga workshop then after that we left and saw guru duru and it was pure magic later joshua said he was waiting for like 5 years to olay with him and how old drum masters are good but duru is a baba.. a respectful legend.. a father of it.. he said duru is one of the best.. and it made me feel so lucky to be his friend and student.. he compared other elders to hum and basically no one compares.. and he said it was so powerful to see him that tonight and especially when he saw me throw my hands over him and damn I'm so fucking lucky that night we went to the yoga room and he taught me the african harp and since then I've been playing it and its dangerous.. so dangerous.. i spent like 3 hours on it yesterday i left i n the middle of a yoga class and i skipped things and ignore homework it takes me to a different realm and it catches peoples eyes and cast a postive judgement on me... its incredible itsnnuts it is one of the most beautiful things in this realm it takes me to other realms and that night mae me so happy and he fucking lent it to me he said it was going to be painful for him but he did it anyways.. joshua is a pure angel.. literally... casted to me from the gods.. and that night i showed baba and elena and they loved it and baba said i looked so beautiful playing it and took a picture of me and elena said she wants to hear tin the morning and the next day i got home and went straight to playing it again and i fucking figured out how to play carlo’s song.. the one i play on the piano.. but i played it on the fucking african harp.. the kora.. and it blew my mind.. it like ignites and invites him into my life.. bc it is such magic and it is HIS song. then i did yoga and left and played it more and another guest came in and loved it and took pictures of me and called me beautiful multiple times.. he later offered me so much weed and i refused then he gave me a bag of like 20 candy edibles and then i was cooking and this beautiful light of energy man knocks on the door to use the restroom and he is incredibly beautiful.. i hope to see him tonight.. but incredible.. there was like 10 extra new people at the ceremony.. such perfect timing.. the one tim ei go in the evening.. and he sits next to me and its crazy how drawn i am to his being.. his breathe.. wow it was so powerful to me that it made me laugh.. i laugh at how powerful men can be to me sometimes.. but his energy is very strong.. and i am mesmerized. such a cute geeky boy.. he has small glasses and a man bun and beautiful hazel eyes.. his name is dave.. i met all of those lovely people when i went up to grab the koran to play it outside hoping he'd hear it when ceremony ended and they all ended up coming upstairs bc stephanie (former resident) wanted to go to gurus room.. and stephanie is magic i cant wait till she comes and is a resident for a bit here.. she knew what a koran was,, she knew what i was holding.. and everyone was mesmerized by the instrument and every got quiet when i would play it and everybody was beautiful and i met chris a former british monk he just got back from a monastery in thalinad and we created so many plans together.. chris also adorable.. could be a brother of dave.. but dave has so much magic to him.. but chris says he plays flute and i told him i play african drums and koran and we can totally jam out and we are going to on saturday after morning yoga and tonight we are going to the full moon party in oakland with african drums and all my african drummer friends i am so excited I'm going to look so cute and i can just only imagine the MAGICAHHHHHHH and he said he's bringing friends too i cant wait to meet them he said he met them at burning man and shit I'm just excited joshua told me about this full moon party too and jesse is gonna be there and a few guys i met from the oakland drum circle like shit this realm is opening up to me its unbelavile I'm so excited and last night when they all left i played kora to the full moon and a special star i dedicated as my brother and played the kora for them... the moon blessed me with a  few tears and nostalgia of my brother,.. i felt it trying to work magic and put me in a place where I've been with my brother but it was difficult for me.. nonetheless the full moon last night was accelerating and escalated my life spiritually and in this realm.. and tonight I'm sure itll do the same.. I'm stuck son missing my first day of spanish class or dropping it for an african percussion class.. i would go to yoga then fire then the party or to class then party I'm not sure I'm gonna go run on it and get money from the atm for yoga house tuition  9/6/17
