A Mandated Holiday Break - Chapter 11

Written: 22nd December 2024
Notes: Established relationship Sylus/MC-centric but poly LADs, with my personal pov of the game and lil headcanons littered in. I wrote this a while back and stewed on it, but I guess I'm posting it so it stops sitting in my drafts for 500 years, until I forget and come back to be like ??? tf was I working on?

Sylus enjoys training with you. If he treats your training in earnest, you respond in kind, determined and focus. As a hunter you want to be good, you want to be capable, you want to be best placed to help people.
However he feels about hunters in general, he knows your drive comes from a determination to help.
There are times, however, that you let the competitive spirit snarl. That's his favourite. Watching you throw yourself at him, determined to knock him on his ass. It's a part of you that stays consistent, and he sees it most when he teases you, when he takes your challenge too lightly. When he pushes you the right way.
When he says you can't do something.
You become determined to prove him wrong.
You always prove him right in one regard, looking at you with your arm pressed into his throat, legs locked. You're as much a dragon as he is.
"So what do I win?"
You gloat, smug, and he flips the two of you, pressing all his weight in. Amused to hear the little wheezed gasp, as he does so. "Did you win?" He holds himself up on his elbows then, nose against yours. Gleaming eyes sharp but not harsh.
He blinks as you blow in his right eye, and pulls back a little bit, a gasp pulling out of his throat. You follow him though, and bite his nose. "Misbehaving little kitten."
Your laugh shoots him through the heart, but you press your advantage, wrapping your arms around his neck and pulling. He can taste you on lips already, leaning in to you. His hand plants next to your head, other reaching for you, but you intercept it. Grabbing him, canting your hips up, against his.
Sylus doesn't think of himself as a needy man. He's had no problems controlling himself in any situation. You have a habit of walking his ideals back, in a way he loves and hates.
For a moment, he feels you against him, and his hips jerk, seeking you out more. A growl deep in his throat. Hand by your head clawing at the ground...
Before you flex again, leg wrapping around him, bite his neck and roll.
His undignified 'oomph', is one thing, he commends you anytime you best him (though he would rather you not use methods like that with just anyone), but the disappointed little whine he feels escape him, is another.
This time you don't pin him, you relax and rest your arms over his chest, crossed, and your chin rests on them to watch him. He stares up at the ceiling, huffs once, and then levels you with an irritable look.
"So my prize?"
You're so smug, wearing a smirk he knows is an impression of him. All canines. He loves you, irritable little kitten that you are, because you're as smart as you are curious. As feisty as you are gentle.
As warm as you can be cold.
"I don't remember offering one, what would you like?" Because how could he deny you anything, when all he wants in this world and the next, is to gift you every treasure so you can't think of anything but him when you see your own home in decor.
You tap your chin with a finger, then reach over to tap his nose, "I want..." you pause and hold him there. Over the precipice, as you enjoy to do, knowing his patience is nigh infinite for you. "You to read a book to me."
He blinks, not sure what he expected, but he's learned if he expects anything with you he'll be surprised and shocked more than he's not. Sometimes he cannot understand what goes through your head, though he thinks that could be part of the joy of knowing you.
Even if it does often result in you blurting out something with very little context.
"A book?"
"Yep."
He blows a little bit of hair out of your eyes, resting his hand on your waist and trying to ignore how thrown off his pace he is. A second ago he wanted to devour you. Well. He always does, if you're around, if you're not. He always wants to sate his hunger. Even if it's just burying his nose into your skin and inhaling.
"What book?"
You push yourself up, ungracefully. This time your smile is yours, excited and ready to drag him along again. You're sweaty and you're tired but he's opened a door to another of your interests and now you won't be able to focus until you show him.
He loves little else than allowing you to talk or share. He's record every word if he could.
You barely wait for him to follow, racing off to where his bookcase is, to where you've begun to place your own. Somehow, when he'd offered, he'd gained a bigger reaction than when he made an entire room up for you. Or cleared out space in the closet in his.
As he enters his own room... your room, because truly isn't this whole base yours now, you thrust a book into his arms.
He barely sees the cover before he's being dragged to the bed, arranged how you like, and then unceremoniously sat on.
Sylus exhales and pulls you into his arms properly, brackets you, and rests his chin on your shoulder so he can open Stardust in front of you.
It's well worn and even though the pages haven't been folded, they're greying at the edges. He can tell you've owned it for years. You tilt your head so you can look at him as he starts, chest vibrating against your back and his deep voice lulling you into a calm it's impossible not to relax into.
He has no idea if he's reading it right, if he's supposed to pull voices out of a hat, if you're even going to enjoy his rendition, but your nose nuzzles against his cheek and you close your eyes as he recites words he knows you know off by heart... and he doesn't think too hard about it.

I've been stuck on viewing Maggie as Crowley's mirror, and for most of the show I like that interpretation. But once I started thinking of Nina as Crowley's Mirror in the ball scene specifically, I made a connection....
Aziraphale is playing God here. He has a vision- a happy romantic evening where people speak Victorian English, dress nicely, dance, and fall in love -and he wills everyone present to conform to his plan. But Nina doesn't conform. Nina feels like something isn't right. She asks questions.
She asks Aziraphale what's going on, why she doesn't feel sad when she knows she's sad, and Aziraphale doesn't give her a satisfactory answer. He tells her that the important thing is that she's here. She's here to play a role in his great plan. To dance in his ball.
So she expresses her concerns to Maggie. Maggie hadn't seen the issues at first, but she listens to Nina, and Nina gets her to acknowledge the absurdity of the situation just a little bit. Listen to their conversation at the dance again. It sounds SO MUCH like the conversations we've heard Crowley and Aziraphale have a thousand times during their 6000 year dance. Crowley calling out heaven, asking questions, trying to get Aziraphale to consider the absurdity of it all. Aziraphale mostly defending heaven, but listening, and sometimes acquiescing.
And this all falls in line with a point I've made before - In season 2, Crowley's relationship with Aziraphale begins to mirror his relationship with heaven. Aziraphale shows a pattern of not listening to Crowley the whole season, but especially in this scene. Crowley tries to ask him what is going on, and alert him to very real danger, but Aziraphale is dismissive. He is blinded by his desire to see his plan to fruition.
And just so we're clear, this is not an Aziraphale hate post. Rather, I think it might give us some insight into where God is coming from. Because Aziraphale's actions may be dismissive and controlling, but they are motivated by love. Misguided, certainly, but with all the best intentions. I have a feeling, when we finally meet God, it will be a similar story. And maybe both She and Aziraphale will learn that sometimes to love means to let go.

Half the time when I find out about some famous person being a horrible monster it's because I came across some random fanpost defending them. Like "John McShanks did nothing wrong, you don't understand he wasn't all that closely associated with the Puppy Pulverizing Plant™. Don't you remember all the charity work he did? All the make a wish kids he visited? Obviously he can't be a bad person. Even if he's sorta close to the Puppy Pulverizing Plant™ that doesn't really matter." And like 6,000,000 more words but all my brain can focus on is "The fucking WHAT Plant™?".
Then I google it to see wtf they were talking about and there's pictures of the PPP™ and financial statements for the PPP™ signed by John McShanks and pictures of John McShanks at the grand opening of the PPP™ and videos of him singing the praises of the PPP™ and if that one random guy didn't defend John McShanks I would never have found out what a horrible person he is.

Dream Good Omens Movie plot
First 10 mins of obliterating Metatron and saving the World (again).
Next 80 mins is just them, in their South Downs cottage with montages of selecting the furniture and wallpapers with Aziraphale dragging Crowley around, Crowley pretending to be upset but not so subtly giving his two piece of fashion advice. Show me the duo bringing the plants and settling in their home. Give me a long drawn out apology and confessions. Give me the tears and fluff and their happy beginning.

this is the one and only thing I will say about the Neil Gaiman situation: I believe that the allegations might be true. I hope they're not for the sake of everyone involved, but I won't just dismiss the potential victims and I won't try to idealise Neil. Never have, never will.
BUT.
If yall use this to drag the name of a trans ally and a dead fucking man through the mud because they simply worked with Neil, and take that collaboration to AUTOMATICALLY and CERTAINLY mean that they too are somehow aware of what he did and responsible for it, then I sincerely think you're a horrible person. And also I sincerely believe you don't care about the victims and are using this just to shit on random people you don't like by taking advantage of a happenstance connection.
Also if you use this to drag Tennant specifically, I will automatically assume you're transphobic as well, because it's very interesting that the allegations came out through a right wing TERF podcast and are being used to drag a very outspoken trans ally who is not the one to have actually done anything.

More Gaiman thoughts
There is another episode in the Tortoise Media podcast series about NG, this time focusing on Claire, the woman who told her story in the Am I Broken podcast earlier last month. There is apparently a recording of a phone call NG and Claire had, where he sort of "apologized" for his actions and said that he'd pay for her therapy and/or donate to the charity she was working for at the time.
So, did he admit guilt? Innocent people don't apologize or offer to make up for their shitty actions by donating money.
It all boils down to consent. And if the person felt icky about these actions, if they felt violated and traumatized, then there was no consent! Even if they were okay with it in the moment! If they look back on the events years later and don't feel right about it, if they have ongoing trauma about it, it was not consensual! And their doubts about that relationship are valid! Too many people seem to think that just because they were okay with it "at the time" then they can't reverse course on their views of that relationship later. Claire clearly had trauma about her time with him. It was not consensual.
I'm sure NG had consensual relationships. I'd heard the rumors about his "groupies" and I figured they must have all been consensual. Now I realize that quite a few of those were not. And I feel bad that I was lured into his "rock star author" persona and never thought about the women involved because I'd thought they were consenting.
But that's was NG wanted me to think. He crafted this charismatic public persona which charmed me. He crafted a fictional version of himself because he's very good at creating characters that people like. All the while doing awful awful things to women. And I'm angry on their behalf.
I don't necessarily want to keep harping on this but the whitewashing of NG's character on the internet is in full swing and the tag needs more posts that share the truth. NG is a gross creep.

Yeah I loved good omens...but fuck Neil Gaiman idgaf - it's not just "believe victims"
Its the fact that he responded! They said rape, he said it was "cuddling." but even if it all blows over and he does end up innocent it doesn't matter. Theres so many bad news people can take and so much mental exhaustion to deal with petty bullshit. So even if it blows over how can I sit and watch anything he makes without thinking back on these allegations and feeling disgust? Well most will either seperate art from the artist, or learn not to have parasocial relationships and put them on a pedestal.
And that goes for david tenent too, he's just a guy. But the more people paint him up and make memes that he's oh so much better then it's a matter of time before he gets the spotlight and the cycle repeats.
Another is conflating the LGBT community alongside him, that bigots say "Of course he ended up being a sexual devient by writing gay porn for the woke mob." which is another headache within itself that lgbt are now dragged into it and he is used as an example to encourage homophobia [thats on the bigots not neil but given that lgbt is now in the crossfire is both a headache AND a distraction people look at a MAN assualting a WOMEN and make the whole argument into LGBT = Pedophiles as if that type of logic makes sense? but its twiiter what should i expect.]
But I have to admit to human weakness as well, personally I think most fans ruin shows or opinions on people. that point when a show is ruined it's not the author or the show it's the bad takes fans make and the hate is directed at them. So I can't help but laugh and think on that time I made a post about how Good Omens comes across as queerbait only because before season 2 it had similair patterns to other shows and movies that queerbaited and I was just pointing out those patterns- not to mention I tried to say since day one:
Just because an author alignes themselves with your type of politics doesn't make them a good person. JK rowling said dumbeldore was gay and hermione was black she was an ally of the LGBT look at her now. And when I said just because Neil is an ally he could end up the same as JK rowling. And by a fan was told "Just because a couple authors did similair things doesn't mean this would happen again, you're crazy."
So to all those 'fans' who dogpiled me on that post, send threatening messages and put words in my mouth and treating me like shit while in the same breath saying "The good omens fandom is a positive fandom." I am laughing now. The patterns I noticed and pointed out that PISSED you off so much.
I can now say with relish delight.
