“...A lone woman could, if she spun in almost every spare minute of her day, on her own keep a small family clothed in minimum comfort (and we know they did that). Adding a second spinner – even if they were less efficient (like a young girl just learning the craft or an older woman who has lost some dexterity in her hands) could push the household further into the ‘comfort’ margin, and we have to imagine that most of that added textile production would be consumed by the family (because people like having nice clothes!).
At the same time, that rate of production is high enough that a household which found itself bereft of (male) farmers (for instance due to a draft or military mortality) might well be able to patch the temporary hole in the family finances by dropping its textile consumption down to that minimum and selling or trading away the excess, for which there seems to have always been demand. ...Consequently, the line between women spinning for their own household and women spinning for the market often must have been merely a function of the financial situation of the family and the balance of clothing requirements to spinners in the household unit (much the same way agricultural surplus functioned).
Moreover, spinning absolutely dominates production time (again, around 85% of all of the labor-time, a ratio that the spinning wheel and the horizontal loom together don’t really change). This is actually quite handy, in a way, as we’ll see, because spinning (at least with a distaff) could be a mobile activity; a spinner could carry their spindle and distaff with them and set up almost anywhere, making use of small scraps of time here or there.
On the flip side, the labor demands here are high enough prior to the advent of better spinning and weaving technology in the Late Middle Ages (read: the spinning wheel, which is the truly revolutionary labor-saving device here) that most women would be spinning functionally all of the time, a constant background activity begun and carried out whenever they weren’t required to be actively moving around in order to fulfill a very real subsistence need for clothing in climates that humans are not particularly well adapted to naturally. The work of the spinner was every bit as important for maintaining the household as the work of the farmer and frankly students of history ought to see the two jobs as necessary and equal mirrors of each other.
At the same time, just as all farmers were not free, so all spinners were not free. It is abundantly clear that among the many tasks assigned to enslaved women within ancient households. Xenophon lists training the enslaved women of the household in wool-working as one of the duties of a good wife (Xen. Oik. 7.41). ...Columella also emphasizes that the vilica ought to be continually rotating between the spinners, weavers, cooks, cowsheds, pens and sickrooms, making use of the mobility that the distaff offered while her enslaved husband was out in the fields supervising the agricultural labor (of course, as with the bit of Xenophon above, the same sort of behavior would have been expected of the free wife as mistress of her own household).
...Consequently spinning and weaving were tasks that might be shared between both relatively elite women and far poorer and even enslaved women, though we should be sure not to take this too far. Doubtless it was a rather more pleasant experience to be the wealthy woman supervising enslaved or hired hands working wool in a large household than it was to be one of those enslaved women, or the wife of a very poor farmer desperately spinning to keep the farm afloat and the family fed. The poor woman spinner – who spins because she lacks a male wage-earner to support her – is a fixture of late medieval and early modern European society and (as J.S. Lee’s wage data makes clear; spinners were not paid well) must have also had quite a rough time of things.
It is difficult to overstate the importance of household textile production in the shaping of pre-modern gender roles. It infiltrates our language even today; a matrilineal line in a family is sometimes called a ‘distaff line,’ the female half of a male-female gendered pair is sometimes the ‘distaff counterpart’ for the same reason. Women who do not marry are sometimes still called ‘spinsters’ on the assumption that an unmarried woman would have to support herself by spinning and selling yarn (I’m not endorsing these usages, merely noting they exist).
E.W. Barber (Women’s Work, 29-41) suggests that this division of labor, which holds across a wide variety of societies was a product of the demands of the one necessarily gendered task in pre-modern societies: child-rearing. Barber notes that tasks compatible with the demands of keeping track of small children are those which do not require total attention (at least when full proficiency is reached; spinning is not exactly an easy task, but a skilled spinner can very easily spin while watching someone else and talking to a third person), can easily be interrupted, is not dangerous, can be easily moved, but do not require travel far from home; as Barber is quick to note, producing textiles (and spinning in particular) fill all of these requirements perfectly and that “the only other occupation that fits the criteria even half so well is that of preparing the daily food” which of course was also a female-gendered activity in most ancient societies. Barber thus essentially argues that it was the close coincidence of the demands of textile-production and child-rearing which led to the dominant paradigm where this work was ‘women’s work’ as per her title.
(There is some irony that while the men of patriarchal societies of antiquity – which is to say effectively all of the societies of antiquity – tended to see the gendered division of labor as a consequence of male superiority, it is in fact male incapability, particularly the male inability to nurse an infant, which structured the gendered division of labor in pre-modern societies, until the steady march of technology rendered the division itself obsolete. Also, and Barber points this out, citing Judith Brown, we should see this is a question about ability rather than reliance, just as some men did spin, weave and sew (again, often in a commercial capacity), so too did some women farm, gather or hunt. It is only the very rare and quite stupid person who will starve or freeze merely to adhere to gender roles and even then gender roles were often much more plastic in practice than stereotypes make them seem.)
Spinning became a central motif in many societies for ideal womanhood. Of course one foot of the fundament of Greek literature stands on the Odyssey, where Penelope’s defining act of arete is the clever weaving and unweaving of a burial shroud to deceive the suitors, but examples do not stop there. Lucretia, one of the key figures in the Roman legends concerning the foundation of the Republic, is marked out as outstanding among women because, when a group of aristocrats sneak home to try to settle a bet over who has the best wife, she is patiently spinning late into the night (with the enslaved women of her house working around her; often they get translated as ‘maids’ in a bit of bowdlerization. Any time you see ‘maids’ in the translation of a Greek or Roman text referring to household workers, it is usually quite safe to assume they are enslaved women) while the other women are out drinking (Liv. 1.57). This display of virtue causes the prince Sextus Tarquinius to form designs on Lucretia (which, being virtuous, she refuses), setting in motion the chain of crime and vengeance which will overthrow Rome’s monarchy. The purpose of Lucretia’s wool-working in the story is to establish her supreme virtue as the perfect aristocratic wife.
...For myself, I find that students can fairly readily understand the centrality of farming in everyday life in the pre-modern world, but are slower to grasp spinning and weaving (often tacitly assuming that women were effectively idle, or generically ‘homemaking’ in ways that precluded production). And students cannot be faulted for this – they generally aren’t confronted with this reality in classes or in popular culture. ...Even more than farming or blacksmithing, this is an economic and household activity that is rendered invisible in the popular imagination of the past, even as (as you can see from the artwork in this post) it was a dominant visual motif for representing the work of women for centuries.”
- Bret Devereaux, “Clothing, How Did They Make It? Part III: Spin Me Right Round…”

so… this is purely based off of spoilers and my own thoughts i’m not going to be able to watch the new episode until after work rip but…
as of right now i’m feeling fairly confident that they are prepping to write olivia off the show… idk how on earth miss girl (this is not meant in a rude way i just refer to people this way okay cool clarification over) got out of her 4 season contract… but i feel like she must have because it would explain a lot. plus getting out of that contract is FULLY in liv’s best interest rn. she needs to capitalize on her success.
this is a little disappointing because it wrecks some of my theories i’ve been working on for potential future seasons, but i mean we saw this coming.
her having someone gotten out of the contract would entirely help us explain the fact that she has done approximately zero promo on her socials… like she /filmed/ promo like for the rose song and all that along with the season that has been used on the disney accounts, but she didn’t do any interviews or any events or anything hsmtmts related promo-wise. like even though her music is her focus right now (understandably so given she’s blown up) it’s still WEIRD that a disney lead has posted approximately zero things about her show. but if she’s no longer under contract or is about to be no longer under contract it would make a lot more sense.
in addition, while i think it’s a little dumb, this plot arc of i’m nina and i just do music now and no ricky of course the song’s not about you even though it definitely was… (otherwise why would she write something that a) doesn’t fit batb and b) tell kourtney that ricky cannot know about it) fully serves getting olivia off the show even if it doesn’t fully serve the show the way they could’ve written nini’s personal growth arc in my personal opinion.
like ricky has messed up this season, don’t get me wrong (though a lot of it stems from his parents that’s an explanation not an excuse), but him wanting to have a conversation with nini about the rose song and her like no shut up richard it’s not about you… is not something that’s him doing something wrong. it’s on her for being dishonest about it. she knows it’s about him. she’s just dismissing him in a time where he needs to be able to talk about his feelings. because frankly, yes he was being clingy, and she does feel trapped by it (aka the rose song), but if he was able to talk to her about why… he’d probably be able to cool it.
if ricky can’t open up to nini they shouldn’t be together. both because of his emotional repression and her closing doors on him… communication is a two way street. it’s not all on her but it’s also not all on him. like i am getting frustrated by them which sucks because they could’ve been so so good together and they were for a hot second... but them writing liv off the show definitely explains the nina the music person and ricky being stifling when he’s otherwise previously been supportive arc.
this plot arc is fully served by them writing olivia off so she can focus on other things. do i think this was a weak concept they decided to run with? yes. nina the songwriter whose song blows up to parallel olivia rodrigo feels like a very unoriginal storyline to me, but it gets her out of the theatre bubble… which is what she needs to get off the show. nini would have to either leave or at the very least leave the theatre kids and this makes more sense than her moms suddenly packing her up and moving away for no reason.
could they have just kept her at yac… sure. but they didn’t. plus nini’s character doesn’t fit at the repressive academy anyway… and i do have a feeling that her leaving at least leaving so soon def has to do with the actress who played emily (may she rest in peace). but regardless, there were other ways they could’ve played this, but it’s where they’re going… at least from my perspective… and i think it’s going to at least hopefully lead to a solid ending for a character that i’ve had a lot of mixed emotions over these last two seasons.
#hsmtmts#hsmtmts spoilers#but not really just sort of??? bc i haven’t actually seen it???#death tw#mine

10 Favourite Female Characters From 10 Different Fandoms
(List your 10 favorite female characters from 10 fandoms, then tag 10 people)
Thank you so much for the tag @a-lil-bi-furious !! ❤️
1. Malia Tate from Teen Wolf
Starting off strong — literally, she has the strength of, like, a bear and the temper of one! My angry girl!! I just loved her from the very first second we were introduced to her after turning back. She went through so much, and it clearly had a big impact on her, and we got to see her grow through most of it (but not all of it because the writers suck a bit) and work to become a pack member instead of the lone coyote she had gotten used to being. Also, she insanely pretty and cute so she’s allowed to growl at people every so often!
2. Liv Parker from The Vampire Diaries
My angry and extra sassy girl — witch edition! There’s just something about her that I love. I really understand Tyler; she could insult me and blast me across a room with magic and I would fall in love with her. But we know that a lot of her mean-girl attitude comes from her family issues, and it’s more of a defense mechanism than anything. So, it was nice to see a softer side of her around both Luke and Tyler — and Jo, on occasion. She knew she was the “weaker” twin and as much as the thought of dying scared her, she still stood strong and tried to find a way to save Luke from having to live with that guilt by finding another way — just as she saved Tyler from triggering his curse by killing someone (who was already dying because of him) for him. And then in the end, knowing she was going to die anyway, she saved him again. She deserved a way better ending and more of a chance to grow since we definitely were not done with her story, so I will be forever bitter but I love and appreciate the time we had her for!
3. Hope Mikaelson from Legacies
Is it cheating if they’re from the same universe but not the same show? I just love this little Tribrid so much. She’s gone through a lot her entire life — literally, she had people trying to kill her before she was even born. She lost her mum, and then her dad, and her uncle. Not to mention the, uh, killing a bunch of people in between and also finding out your first boyfriend helped kidnapped your mum in a plot to kill her and you (that he didn’t know about, given, but still). And having virtually no friends at school. But she still tried to be so strong all the time, to a point where she really should let more people in it and see that soft, vulnerable part that’s still in there. Her anger is justified, and sometimes out of her control due to her family, and I wish they’d let her get real help for it. She shouldn’t have to be the “hero” or the “saviour” all the time and I wish they would just cut her a break, let her rest, and have a moment of happiness that doesn’t end with her feeling like she didn’t deserve it.
4. Wanda Maximoff from MCU
(First of all, you don’t know how painful it was having to wade through a bunch of Pietro gifs in the process of finding this one.) The version of Wanda in the MCU is very... complex. Obviously there’s a lot of issues With the character, but if I’m focusing solely on who she is in the MCU, then I love her so much. And she definitely has some issues in her life. She starts off as the bad guy, angry and seeking “justice” (and revenge) for what happened to her parents, and in the same movie, we see her realize that the side she was working for wasn’t any better. We see her character develop quite a bit in just her first movie, and then over the course of the next ones, we see more sides to her; her guilt over hurting innocent people through a quickly-made decision, her compassion for Vision and for those other people, her grief over losing Pietro and Vision. And she herself is so powerful! She tries to live with the pain she’s endured but it takes over without her control, because both her grief and her magic are all-consuming. And I add this because I still refuse WandaVision’s change to the timeline: she went through all of this before she was eighteen. She’s so young, and in pain, but she still tries so hard to push through because other people need her, and she doesn’t want them to suffer like she has. Also, I just think it’s pretty when she does those little hand movements to possess people and her eyes turn red.
5. Nymphadora Tonks from Harry Potter
She deserved the absolute world. Her death was unnecessary, and I hate it, because she should have gotten to live the rest of her life raising her son, happy with her husband, and just generally being alive. She was so full of life and joy, and she tried to be the source of those things in the middle of a literal war when everyone was at their lowest and felt hopeless or angry. Also would’ve loved more scenes of her and her favourite cousin, Sirius, because they would be chaotic and they both deserved that. ALSO also, she’s very pretty, can change her appearance and chose to have pink/purple hair and dresses like how tiny me wanted to dress, so I immediately fell in love, of course.
6. Kara Danvers from Supergirl
She’s just so kind and compassionate despite everything the world has put her through — but she’s also angry deep down, and she’s hurt and in pain, and some of my favourite moments of hers are when she’s allowed to express that. When she’s allowed to really just lose it and lash out at the people who hurt her because she pushes it down for so long so that she can help everyone else that it finally just explodes.
7. Jody Jackson from The Dumping Ground
TW: mentions of different forms of child abuse. This girl deserves the whole world but I promise you that the world does not deserve her. The same can be said for pretty much all of the characters in The Dumping Ground, to be honest, but god she has just been through so much. Neglected by her mum from a very young age, abused physically and verbally by her and (presumably) both of her brothers, and it’s implied she’s abused sexually by one of her brothers as well. Of course when we first meet her she is angry and terrified. She still is because the trauma developed and was never fully dealt with, so she still carries it all around in her mouth and fists, until one little thing happens to make her lash out. And she knows she has a problem — she is terrified of becoming her brother, and sometimes her mum, and all she wants is to not hurt the people she loves. Because she loves so much, it’s just hard for her to know how to show it sometimes because sometimes all she can remember is how her family “loved” her. But she’s grown so much since she went into care and she’s getting help at last, and I just have so much hope for her happiness in the next series to come.
8. Annie Marks from Good Girls
She’s short, fiesty, will make jokes at the worst possible time, won’t stop calling a literal gang leader who has threatened her life on more than one occasion “gang friend”, was incredibly supportive and accepting of her son when he came out as trans, will punch someone when necessary (probably also when not), has a semi-friendly co-parenting thing going on with her ex, and is just all around adorably ridiculous.
9. Casey McDonald from Life With Derek
Ignoring Derek in the gif — Casey usually does, too. Casey is a perfectionist, and frankly, sometimes quite annoying about it and some other things, and yes, she definitey initiates a lot of the arguments between her and Derek. And that is why I love her. She is in no way perfect, and her striving to be comes from anxiety and insecurities that are partially the result of the instability in her life. I love how, no matter how much she may despise Derek, when there’s a real problem, she tries to help. She cares about the people in her life, and I can’t wait for her to return to as a mum of four!
10. Ashley Garcia from The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia
Someone give the world TO her, please?? It’s a shame this fandom is so small because she deserves so much love and appreciation. She’s a literal genius but lacks... a lot of social skills at the start of the show. But she learns from her friends, and gets to experience new things, including having a crush for the time (and the second!) and she’s just generally living life as a fairly normal teenager. While still being an absolute genius. I just love this smiley little dork so much!
Tagging: @pad-foots @donnas-troia @childofsquidward @multifandomlover121 @superarrowverse @dance-is-life27 to participate if you want to, but as always, no pressure! And anyone who wants to do this but wasn’t tagged — you have been now! Go do it!

Oh, you knew who this was just from the song, right?
NUO
We all need to channel our own inner Nuo on occasion, don’t we? (Maybe all the time.)
Nuo is my OC that people most frequently forget is not actually canon. Frankly, I can’t imagine any kid’s show having a character like hers, never mind most adult shows. She is fierceness uncompromised, intelligence undimmed, driven, determined, ambitious, a woman with a fucking plan and she won’t let you forget it for a single second.
She will tell you exactly how it is and if you don’t like it then that’s on you.
Nuo was a poor little girl headed for nowhere who grabbed every single chance she was given with both hands, rode it hard and put it away wet. She does not do defeat. She does not back down. If you hear the sound of her omnipresent high heels clip clip clipping down the hall you’d better make yourself scarce.
She does cry. There are only two people in the world who are allowed to see any weakness in her, however, and that’s her husband and best friend. (And once, Mako, but she was pregnant so it doesn’t count.) There’s vulnerability there, but it is very closely guarded.
She loves her husband with every breath in her body. She will never stop marveling that he is hers. She loves her daughters and over time, comes to genuinely care for and love her in-laws. Wu is her soulmate in every single way but sex; he is the person she finally allows herself to let loose with, to find that carefree girl she was never allowed to be, by herself or others.
Nuo was deliberately written to be autistic; she’s the kind of Girl Autist that never gets diagnosed, that gets overlooked because her ability to mask is ironclad. Nuo, as you might note, doesn’t really have any girl friends, isn’t sociable, is the bossiest control freak you could hope to meet - and that’s because she loathes change and surprises. Everything needs to be in its proper place for Nuo or else she can’t cope. And she’ll make damn sure it’s there. She knows that appearances and presentation are everything and she’ll always make sure that she methodically ticks off every single box that way. Publicly she will always be perfectly flawless.
Nuo does not take no for an answer. She won’t wait for anyone to ask for what they need, either; she will provide you with what you need, even if you didn’t know you needed it. That’s how she operates.
Wing was the first boy who ever looked at her like she was beautiful and she decided, then and there, that he was the only man for her and she went about securing him in the most Nuo way possible. She was Hou-Ting LIV’s backbone, his real advisor behind the scenes, the power behind that throne, as brief as that time was. (Something which Gun is very aware of.) When that ended, she assumed that same position in Zaofu, behind her mother-in-law. Eventually she’ll step forward and take over, although it’s never easy for her. She’ll be glad, in time, when Orchid takes over and she can go back to supporting her daughter. It’s where she prefers to be.
She loves Zaofu, of course. I’ll also note that in an entire city dressed in green and silver, our girl Nuo dresses in pink and dresses her daughters in their own colors - which are also not green. Which should have been telling you something about Nuo this entire time.
There she is, short and fat, with long hair that she makes fashionable by sheer force of will, with high heels and her clipboard, telling you what to do, and you’ll do it, too.
Whoosh whoosh, people. Get moving or get the fuck out of her way.
Are you ready, ha? It's time for me to take it I'm a boss right now Not gonna fake it Not when you go down 'Cause this is my game And you better come to play I used to hold my freak back Now I'm letting go I make my own choice Bitch, I run the show So leave the lights on No, you can't make me behave So you say I'm complicated That I must be outta my mind But you've had me underrated Rated, rated What's wrong with being, what's wrong with being What's wrong with being confident? Just wanna dedicate a post to someone real quick.
Shoutout to the amazing gal you see before you. She deserves shouting out because she’s awesome but she would only let me do it on here because she doesn’t want anyone she knows IRL to see that frankly bit embarrassing Snapchat.
But she allowed it on tumblr and she’s on holiday now so she can’t really do anything about it so here it is.
Liv, I love you like so much, in the almost a year that we’ve been friends I can truly say that you have quickly become one of my best. It seems weird that a year ago we went to, frankly, rival schools and if someone told me last year that I would become fast friends with someone from your school I would’ve laughed in their face and told them to sod off. Alas here we are and I could not be more happy that we met. It’s unfortunate that we met through people that we now are not huge fans of but what matters is that you are in my life.
I know for your birthday I said a load of sappy shit about how I couldn’t imagine life without you and about how funny and endearing you are but that is all 100% true. You are honestly so amazing in ways you’ll probably never know or comprehend but I know them and if you ever need to be reminded of your worth in this world, for any reason, I will be there to do so, always.
We are so alike that it’s a little bit creepy, like we were both gymnasts, both have shit joints, both a have a bit of a thing for a certain member of a certain franchise and a certain member of a certain band. And typically my mind goes blank when it comes to the shit that we’ve said probably too many times about how we are so alike. I remember saying once that we must share a spirit because it was like we were the same person and from then on calling you my spirit buddy. A few weeks ago I saw someone find her soulmate (in a platonic relationship) and sometimes I think that could be us.
I like to believe that we will always be in each other’s lives in some way because I don’t want to lose our friendship, ever. I want to be able to come home during the holidays from Uni and see you while you’re home from your apprenticeship and have a catch up and a drink. I want to be able to share in your crazy stories about your colleagues or the cute ones about your current boyfriend. I want to be able to complain to you about lectures or find out the gossip about the people we don’t like. I want to be always finding time for each other. I want to be there to support you through your success and through heartbreak and while I’m not ones for weddings I want to be bridesmaid and sure as hell I’m going to cry and I want you their at mine with me to hold my hand when I get last minute jitters. I want to be Godmother (even without the title) to your children and I want you to be the cool and inappropriate aunt to mine. And I want you at my funeral to say something funny and typically you and I want you to get absolutely off your face and cradle that Smirnoff ice like it’s your first born at the wake, even when old and grey. I say I want to die first because I don’t want to think about my life without you in it anymore. That is how much of an impact you have made on it in such a short amount of time.
I hate that I have become so dependant on the people I have met this year but at the same time I hate that I had to go so long without them.
You deserve the world, girl, and I’m just here to help you get it. I love you.
@pxrkchimchimx
Also people reading this go give her a follow as well ☺
