when I first watched rebels kanan's death seemed so pointless to me. yeah, they blew up the fuel station, but so what? couldn't sabine have done that? what's so important about a single factory of slightly better TIEs? they've still got to use imperial pilots (derogatory) and one factory wouldn't make enough to make a difference to how widespread the rebellion is. and if they are so vital couldn't the empire just build another fuel station?
but this morning I finished thrawn: treason and I would like to thank mr zahn for showing not only how powerful the advanced TIEs are even in small numbers, but also how precarious the project and it's funding was next to the death star. it was absolutely the better choice in terms of tactical strength and a lot of senior imperials had noticed that, but the emperor wanted his death machine and after losing their funding the destruction of the fuel depot really was the last nail in the coffin for thrawn's project.
obviously I still don't accept kanan's death (hello, this is me), but I'm happier about its significance in canon now.
