Man, I'm gonna be honest. I played the two partnered endings back to back to see the differences and I like the detective kuuno ending more than the one where we recruit kim! Its just much more fulfilling emotionally!!!!

Kim is overall very serious and composed about stuff and hes well respected by the other cops. When you get to keep your job and recruit him it DOES feel good!! Because it was smooth and really cool of him to defend you like that and you've gotten yourself a friend! a friend who truly trusts you and believes in you. Kim is the nicest and most patient man on planet earth.

But Cuno??? It's a different message. Cuno knows fuckall. Nobody there respects him and he doesnt have the measured responses and fancy words kim has, just pure utter PASSION. He almost cries of RAGE when people dont listen to him when you're trying to convince everybody about the Phasmid. Jean specifically is a cunt to Cuno and spaces out all the time and doesnt listen to anything he says ("you're hearing, but you're not listening"). Nobody believes him. Nobody takes him seriously. He's used to that, i bet.

During the islet section, Cuno is A LOT like Harry. having him around as your partner isnt like having kim at all. he doesnt help with cop stuff or adult stuff. rather, he says your lines for you. i just played the one with kim and CUNO SAYS WHAT YOU WOULD SAY IF YOU WERE WITH KIM. he has the same thought processes as You do. he asks questions just like you do. he acts a bit like you do. he makes comments you would sometimes. He literally says YOUR lines in his runs. and hes impulsive and a child, so he asks it willy nilly. you have to be the responsible one now, you need to hold him back if anything.

And then the way cuno literally BEGS the officers to let him join? to take him away from martinaise, to give him a better chance at life. Hell do anything, he promises to stop saying shit, he promises to behave. Just get him OUT of there. It feels like there are WAY more stakes, so the emotional payoff is MUCH higher

(If you like cuno of course. Which i do. theres a LOT to unpack regarding that boy.)

Like, seeing him EXCITEDLY skipping to the coupris kineema and opening the door to the other cops?? It feels good!!!! It feels really good! Like on top of everything you did, you also got to take this kid out of that shithole, to give him a chance.

Cuno mirrors Harry in MANY ways.

Nobody respects Harry, nobody respects cuno either. Harrys just some insane alcoholic, cunos just a delinquent kid. Neither are considered particularly trustworthy by the people who interact with them in daily life. HOWEVER. cuno has the spark and excitement harry lacks when harry lets him come along. he has hope. he wants to help, he wants to participate even if he doesn't quite know what he's doing. Why? Because if you got him in your party in the first place, it means he feels comfortable around you! For real, when you get that kid to respect YOU he REALLY starts trusting and looking up to you. He's ride or die. For hells sake he chooses HARRY over cunoesse! You don't belittle him and his interests like Cunoesse does! He gets to be unashamedly himself! Plus you're HIS pig. He already very much has a cop/detective fixation and during the entire time he's around harry he's absolutely PUMPED to be solving the crime with him and he's more than willing to help you out and give his two cents on the matter even if he doesn't really know anything about anything.

And so WHAT if he's just some kid? So what if he's POOR and doesn't have a camera to photograph the phasmid? He talks about harry a LOT more than kim does and with awe in his voice. He defends harry until the fucking end and he does NOT stop. He literally doesn't shut up. he just keeps fucking GOING. He blurts stuff out to defend you even if it's not helpful because he respects harry!!! truly respects him! he WANTS to help. he'll say stuff even if his words fail to convey properly what he means.

I Need you to understand. In my playthrough i got harry talking about how he feels like he had children at home when he's asked if he has a family. He feels like he has children, daughters. But alas. You're hit at the end of the game with Dora's 'i terminated our pregnancy because youre poor.' I get a feel that he WANTED to be a father. He wanted a family, but he was just So Fucking Mentally Ill about Everything it never came to be.

But honestly? He'd be an alright mentor figure. He clearly enjoys older kids, despite what he says about not being good with kids. He was a high school teacher! He's Clearly used to dealing with older kids and delinquents and he can talk to them like an equal, if he wants to, he can crack them too! He can be understanding.

And so what? Hell never have Dora's kids, but then he, harry (the drunken cunt) (the cunt everybody hates) (the fucking asshole), can be nice to this delinquent addict child a bunch of times (a foul mouthed jackass) (everybody Loathes that kid) (he doesnt know love) and then said kid starts following him like a lost puppy the moment harry needs company THE MOST. He accepts The Cuno. They have each other's back. They don't give up on each other. They want life to change for the better. Yknow???????

Thinking more about the parallel between Harry processing his suicide attempt, driving his car into the sea, by only remembering it through the fictionalised lens of sea monster imagery and Cunoesse regressing into pretending she's a mythological creature when she's under a lot of stress- the "näkk shit" as Cuno puts it. Drama says it explicitly- "She regresses and pretends she's a mythological creature when she's under too much stress." With Harry's attempt, driving his car into the sea and barely managing to drag himself out at the last moment, but refusing to acknowlege it for what it was and recontextualising the scattered pictures that he gets from his memories of the crash quite literally through the lens of fantasy- "This is how a sea monster sees the world. You've become a sea monster -- giant, hidden and… strangely tender at heart. All is blue."- he is essentially doing the same thing. Here he's remembering the almost peaceful experience of being under the sea, the stillness found below the waves, as he exited the vehicle and came back to shore. It's fuzzy and confused, layered with metaphor, but the image is repeated again by Idiot Doom Spiral also calling him a sea monster- "We ran towards the ice, whilst you crawled your way out, miraculously unhurt -- covered in seaweed and shit. Like some kind of sea monster." There's something to be said too about his compounded guilt allowing him to see himself as a monster but ALSO a safety, a comfort in being something inhuman. A "hug monster," a "monster, a murderer, the Gnome of Geroma." Just like Cunoesse, it's a shield. A way to protect themselves from painful memories and process reality. And somehow in processing all of this trauma, in reaffirming his inhumanity, Harry's self-described monstrousness is filled at its heart with that same soft-cored tenderness. His wibbling jello soul. unfortunate side effect of watching Fantasy High literally all day is that I am imagining Cunoesse playing Wirral with Bernadette and Cuno and maybe Harry and Kim

to me Wirral is like the in-universe equivalent of DND right

and if Bernadette is the DM then it'll be a completely homebrewed adventure based on Feline Fighters (i sincerely forgot what I named that series in-universe) and everyone would have to be a cat. However the adventure would be really planned out and with a sincerely interesting plot full of mystery, intrigue, and more violence than you would assume a bubbly 13 year old would make. However it would be TOO planned out and Bernadette initially wouldn't do well with players going off the planned adventure and would have to work on not railroading them.

HOWEVER: I am also imagining that they play like, a few sessions with the cat adventure but it gets dropped and they don't actually finish it, but Cunoesse surprisingly liked it A Lot so she wanted to play more. She was able to get Cuno to DM a session with the two of them that is the pre-made campaign that comes with the game and Cunoesse read the entire thing ahead of time and she /kind of/ takes over as the main character of the world and does everything "right" because it is more satisfying for her. Despite this, or maybe because of it, Bernadette goes completely RP-heavy and doesn't do a damn thing to progress the plot and she's just having a fun time while Cunoesse does the heavy lifting and minimal RP and it doesn't sound fun but I imagine them all having a blast.

Cuno periodically is a little shit and puts in something that he thought of on the spot with the intention of throwing Cunoesse off her game and it makes he Pissed Off every single time. He does it one too many times and she's throwing shit and climbing on the table to try and hit him and they have to be separated but they're back to playing the next weekend.

Greatest regret of my first DE playthrough is that despite bumping up my int stats as much as I could I still barely got any world lore and almost nothing on the Pale. Second greatest regret is that I didn't get the jackets. Third greatest regret is that I didn't even get the option of the feminism thought. Fourth greatest regret is I couldn't figure out a way to get Annette inside. Fifth greatest regret (related to first) is that my psyche was so low that I feel like I missed out on like half the game. Ah well.

Greatest victory was completing the homosexual underground thought task pretty early on. Second greatest victory was getting Kim to trust me enough to not get shot during the tribunal. Third greatest victory is getting the working class woman to hug me back. Fourth greatest victory was managing to remember to do karaoke (and failing, but I was fine with that). Fifth greatest victory was getting a cool dice set like hell yeah.

Greatest complaint was that I can't end the game not on the force without getting Kim shot (this is a good narrative decision it just makes me sad). Second greatest complaint was that I couldn't get much backstory on Cuno or Cunoesse without either like punching Cuno or recruiting him (this is also a good narrative decision it just makes me sad). Third greatest complaint was I couldn't argue enough with Morrel and Lena about their racist bullshit (this is a good narrative decision it just makes me angry) (up to this point my complaints have been less complaints and more just marking the interesting ways the game positions you as a white male cop and then never ever lets you forget that fact, which is a very very very good narrative choice).

Fourth greatest complaint is not enough lore (there is lots of lore but I want more. The Pale? The history of the rcm? Please tell me every single little thing? Please?). Fifth greatest complaint was that I had to gentrify the fishing village to get my gun back (come on Everart I know you can be better than this. Like maybe if you care about this community you can work to get the goddamn gun away from the mentally ill old lady and maybe don't send the trigger-happy cops after her?? and not use the situation as a weird power play?? Ffs man. Like I'm not even that mad about the probable murder of the past union organizer, I'm willing to hear you out on that one; just like, can you not endanger random innocent people in Martinaisse to no good end please??) (this is an ok narrative decision but I'm still angry about it. Fuckkkkk op is a genius for making this an ask prompt. To me le retour is a lot of things. Klaasje calls it an urban myth more than anything, and mentions that it’s a concept that seems to appeal to everyone regardless of political alignment. It’s implied (if not just outright stated) that a real political event is on the horizon, so when it does then we’ll have a more literal answer to “what is Le Retour of ‘51 in Revachol,” but as a concept it seems to have a very universal appeal. Steban even mentions a “La Vuelta” that happened in Mesque at one point! I think ultimately, le retour is a kind of longing to return to a time when you believed in a promised future. Maybe you’re hoping for a return of the commune, or of the Suzerain, or of a 12 year long relationship. Whatever you’re waiting for, it’s gone, and the only way to experience it again would be to give into the pale and let the past consume you entirely. In a way, it might be a beautiful experience. But it will cost you the future.

UN JOUR JE SERAIS PRÈS DE TOI. “One day, I will return to your side.” There’s a lot of separations in the game. Cindy disappears with those words, Klaasje and Ruby run away separately rather than together, Cuno and Cunoesse mysteriously split if you get partnered with Cuno, Tommy is separated from his family, Gaston and Billie lose their other halves, who die alone. And then there’s Harry and Dora, of course. I think it’s very interesting how some of these separations differ depending on whether or not the hope of a return/reunion is also hope for the future. Tommy’s family really is waiting for him to return, and thinking of them gives him strength to get through the loneliness of being stuck in this jam. On the other hand, René and Jenny are dead, and when Gaston thinks about them, he hopes that he’ll die and join them soon. In Harry’s dreams, his nightmare version of Dora tells him “there are no stars. There is no future.” And in his waking life, the home that’s waiting for him is no longer on Voyager Road, it’s on Perdition. He’s driven to this massive breakdown because he feels like his life is just going to be this forever. Returning to the intersection, failing to stop Dora from leaving him, waking up and still finding himself in hell.

So in my mind, yeah, le retour represents a very universal longing. To some, it’s hope for a future. (“It’s our way of saying we refuse to accept that the world has to remain like this.” “Broken. Unfinished.”) To others, it’s a kind of suicidal ideation. (“I am on the side of the adversary.”) I think de is very much about how both sides of that longing are at the heart of politics and philosophy.

Okay, I have some ideas for some choose your own adventure style stories, I’m gonna start with something small based on a couple of suggestions I’ve gotten, but I have something a little bigger planned for the future once I’ve tested the waters a little 👀 here’s what I’m thinking:

Ideally each adventure will be contained in one post and I’ll use an extension to add polls to reblogs, so long as the polls don’t break

(if they do break, I’ll have to switch to using a tag that people can scroll back through to see each adventure from start to finish. The fact that they’ll be in reverse order is a little annoying but oh well. And posts with polls not being editable unfortunately means that I can add “start here” or “previous” buttons to each post to make navigation a little easier, but I can’t add a “next” button 😔)

Since the shortest poll duration is 24 hours, I don’t think I’d be able to make every single Harry dialogue a poll, or else it would take a veeeery long time to get through the story and I imagine that it would get annoying. It would be easier to pull off in a twitter thread than a tumblr post. For this blog, I’ll try to make each installment long enough to be satisfying, and each dialogue poll important enough to be worth the wait.

(For this reason, I also wouldn’t be able to make it so that you could go through all of the options in some dialogue lists like you can in the game. Sorry!)

I think it would be fun to include active checks! (Red checks only, again white checks/going through multiple dialogue options might be more fun to attempt if polls could be like an hour or two long like on Twitter.) It could look something like, if the check option wins the poll then that’s an attempted check, but whether it’s a success or failure depends on the percentage of voters. Higher the difficulty, higher the percentage of votes needed.

harry for the character ask

Ooh, okay!

First impression: I first saw him through fan art here on tumblr so my first impression was that he was a relatively handsome middle aged dude with weird facial hair lol. I didn't know anything about his character at the time.

Impression now: I love him. I see a reflection of so much of the world through him. Class struggle, addiction struggle. I see him as a kind of hope that things can get better (I always make him sober up due to past trauma involving alcoholism)

Favorite moment: this might be a bit outside the norm (maybe?) but I think my favourite moment is when he digs a little deeper into the hanged man and finds the bullet lodged in this brain stem. That solidified in me that he is actually a good detective.

Idea for a story: I want to draw up a comic where he quits the RCM and goes back to being a teacher. Maybe an art teacher this time around (or whatever the Elysium equivalent is to an English teacher). Maybe I'll include that in my Cunoesse AU comic.

Unpopular opinion: I like to think he gains some weight after the events in the game. He's described as fat in the game but I don't really think he is. Well, to an extent. He's overweight, got a beer gut, but to me that's not really all that fat, just flabby.

Favorite relationship: his relationship with Kim if that wasn't obvious from the art I make lol. I also like to think he's like Goku or Naruto and eventually wins everyone over.

Favorite headcanon: he's an excellent cook and writer.

idea for a story: i always had a vague idea abt writing something abt what happens to her in the route where cuno is harry's partner in solving the case, like what happens to her after they leave martinaise. but i never got round to actually writing anything and my memories of the ideas are pretty foggy now 😔

unpopular opinion: i think it's sad when both the game and the fandom talk abt cuno but act like she isn't important or doesn't exist. yes she gets less direct character development than cuno but she's so fascinating and so sad and i wish ppl talked abt her more

Okay, I finished Disco Elysium. (Spoilers)

Had to sit with it for a while. Wasn’t sure how I felt at first, but now I think I’ve kind of got my head around it, or at least I’m starting to.

So, for the record, Ruby shot herself and the Tribunal did not go well. I didn’t save Elizabeth and Kim got shot (although did not die afaik), which means Cuno tagged along for the island and joined the squad. I’m assuming Kim would’ve done, had he been present.

I had to think about The Deserter for a while. Like who is this guy? What does he represent? But I think I understand. He’s an ideologue who couldn’t move on, who couldn’t let go. He’s stuck on his moment of failure. Which is what Harry isn’t. As much as he fucks up (and it’s a lot), he keeps going. So there’s that.

I also like the idea of it being a kind of random event, like not any of the suspects you’ve been investigating. I think that’s related to the Phasmid. Which, I KNEW IT. I knew that cryptozoology stuff was going to come back, that the game wanted me to keep believing. Like, the mystery’s essentially unsolvable from prior information—you have to follow the path, persevere, believe and you come upon something… weirdly beautiful, if probably not what you expected.

The ontological mystery never got solved, exactly. Like, it’s obviously working on a metaphorical level. And it’s alluding to more—all the stuff about power and gaming, the symbolism of Anodic Dance Music and such, I dunno, the fantasy around the edges. Maybe in a second playthrough, I can figure out more.

Cos I know there’s stuff I didn’t see. Whose bedroom was that that I broke into in the apartments? What’s up with the old lady hiding in the lorries who wouldn’t talk to me? What, exactly, is behind the secret doors in the Whirling? Why did Ruby think I worked for LMP? The fuck is with Cindy and Cunoesse? Etc.

(I did finally get in the cargo container, though, and… whoo, that guy. But also there’s the whole “this reality is subjective on a very literal level” thing that’s happening there. There’s so much weirdly interesting shit in here—it’s like batshit absurd but also very well thought-out. That seems to be the crux of the appeal.)

I dunno. I need to chew on this one for a while. It’s a game I look forward to revisiting in like, a year or two, when I’ve forgotten just enough of it to make it spicy. But yeah, it’s doing something big. Like there’s SO much going on, on both a literal plot and metaphorical level… I see why it has the reputation it does.

For now, I’m deciding what to play next. I have about a month until FF16–I’m thinking maybe TLOU2?
