To make a long story short, im a late 20 something living in portland oregon. I had a pretty intense emo/goth phase as a tween that i thought i had grown out of.

A couple months ago, i was watching a nature program on our local station about crows. The program mentioned that if you feed and befriend them, crows will bring you small gifts. My emo phase came back full force and i figured that i was furloughed and had lots of time- so why not make some crow friends.

My plan worked a little too well and the resident 5 crows in my neighborhood have turned into an army 15 strong. At first my neighbors didnt mind and enjoyed it. They’re mostly elderly and most were in a bird watching club anyway. They thought the fact that i had crows following me around whenever i go outside was funny.

Lately, the crows have started defending me. My neighbor came over for a socially distanced chat (me on my porch her in my yard) and the crows started dive bombing her. They would not stop until she left my yard.

They didn’t make physical contact with her, but they got very close.

Am i liable if these crows injure someone since i fed them? I obviously cant control the crows. I would rather tham not attack my neighbors. But since i technically created this nuisance, could i be financially on the hook for any injuries?

To be clear, they’re not agressive 100% of the time. If just the neighbors are out they are friendly normal crows. They only get aggressive when someone gets close to me or my property.

ETA: TL;DR- I have turned into Moira Rose, queen of the crows. My inadvertent crow army has gotten aggressive towards others. If they hurt someone could i be held liable?

So to make a long story short, I called our local Audobon society. They didn’t think feeding the crows was bad and suggested the neighbors also start feeding them so they essentially become better socialized.

The plan worked and the crows are now a beloved part of the community. There have been no recent dive bombings.

Most amazingly, the crows may have legitimately saved my neighbor. Our city had a pretty big ice and snow event recently. Like i said in my last post, most of my neighbors are older. One of my neighbors was walking down his steep driveway, slipped, and couldnt get back up.

The crows started going ballistic and were making more noise than we have ever heard. A different neighbor went outside to see what was up and found the gentleman in his driveway. Neighbor is mostly ok! Just some serious bruises.

Needless to say the crows have been getting some high value food since then.

Thanks for all the help on my original post. It blew up way more than i was expecting and i thought you guys would enjoy an update.

FROM A REBELLIOUS SENTIMENT A Conversation with Kok Siew-Wai on SiCKL (2006 - ca. 2010)

In late 2005, Kok Siew-Wai returned to Malaysia after having lived in the US for over seven years. Shortly after, she co-founded Studio in Cheras Kuala Lumpur (SiCKL), an initiative which sought to promote experimentation across different media, with Yong Yandsen and other members from Experimental Musicians and Artists Co-operative Malaysia (EMACM). It has since ceased its operations but in some ways transformed into the Kuala Lumpur Experimental Film, Video & Music Festival (KLEX) in 2010. In this conversation, we discuss how SiCKL was formed, the chaos that ensued and the friendships made along the way, and how it all led to KLEX.

MEETING THE GANG

Merv Espina (ME): We’d like to concentrate on SiCKL (Studio in Cheras Kuala Lumpur) and maybe discuss EMACM (Experimental Musicians and Artists Co-operative Malaysia) as well.

Kok Siew-Wai (KSW): I joined a bit later as EMACM was formed before I returned to Kuala Lumpur. I was studying in the US and only came back in late 2005, around Christmas time.

About two weeks after I came back, I went to Goh Lee Kwang’s solo show at Rumah Air Panas (RAP). It was a show with the dancer [Lee] Swee Keong. He asked me to document his performance. [Yong] Yandsen, Tham Kar-Mun, [Yeoh] Yin-Pin, and a bunch of musicians were there at the show. They were playing improvised music and, before I went to the US, I had never heard improvised music in Malaysia so I was really surprised hearing it there.

We started to converse and they mentioned some musicians that inspired them like Peter Brötzmann. I told them that I’ve seen Brötzmann live in the US and they were surprised. Then we just kept talking and became friends. In January 2006, I did a talk at RAP and invited Yandsen to perform with me.

After that, Yandsen and I talked about renting a space for music practice and artists’ gatherings. We got excited and looked around and found a place, and that became SiCKL.

HAPPENINGS AT THE STUDIO

KSW: We kind of had an informal opening ceremony for SiCKL and invited Joe Kidd to open the space for us, with a durian. When we opened it and the smell was like, "ahh..." It’s a fruit with a strong “personality,” definitely not for everyone, ha!

ME: It's officially open, you can smell it. What other funny weird stuff happened in that space?

KSW: There's this dancer, Low Shee Hoe, who brought in a group of young female dancers, and they were just very cute and funny. After the high energy performance, I don't know how, everybody just got into a dancing mood and it kind of became like a trance dancing party. Everyone was dancing and the musicians were playing and the audience were also banging on tables and chairs.

There was also one time that we had zero audience. I remember I was performing, Yandsen was performing, and Azmyl Yunor. Azmyl is a folk singer and he ended up doing a spontaneous stand-up comedy set. It was hilarious! There was no audience and we were like, “Why don't we just perform for each other? We are performers. And we are audience too!” So, we decided to go on anyway because the show must always go on!

Also, at one point, part of SiCKL became kind of like a storage for Yandsen's company which is a supplier of Chinese herbs. I think they had too much goods that time and he needed more space so part of the studio was stacked with so many Chinese herbs boxes that when you entered the studio, you could smell them.

ME: What did your neighbors think of you?

KSW: Our neighbor changes. At one point, it was like some kind of educational center. I think they just thought we were a little strange.

ME: They never attended your performances?

KSW: No. But I remember one funny thing, maybe two floors below us, there was a small church. During one of our events, they were also having one and so when our audience came up, they thought they were going to the church. So the church people were greeting our audience and shaking their hands. Our audience was confused. It’s quite funny.

TRANSFORMATIONS

KSW: Eventually, Yandsen and I were like, “If it’s just us two, the rent is too expensive. We need to ask more people to pay with us.” So, we approached other EMACM members.

Some of them decided to make SiCKL the base of EMACM. That’s how it started basically. Then of course, people come and go, and for some of them, experimental music wasn’t the only thing they did. Some did it for a while before returning to what they are actually more comfortable with. Basically, the ones who stayed to play purely experimental and improvised music from that group were Yandsen, Goh Lee Kwang, and myself.

The two of us became the core members in terms of organization. I ended up doing a lot of the writing and paperwork. Yandsen was the one who took care of technical things. He would be the stage manager during events. And then we both discussed and decided on the content of the programs. Actually, we still work with this structure until today.

ME: So how did you financially sustain that space?

KSW: We have day jobs!

ME: But how many of you contributed? What was the logistical dynamic in sustaining the space financially?

KSW: The space had no official funding at all so basically it was just all the members contributing. At first, everyone contributed together and then, little by little, some pulled out for different reasons. We could understand because some people didn't have full-time jobs so the ones who had stable jobs, like me and Yandsen, tended to contribute a little bit more.

Eventually, we had other people who were not from the initial group coming in to share the studio with us. At one point, there was a theater group who came in and used the space for theater rehearsals. Sometimes, dancers or actor groups would rent it for one or two weeks. But yes, financially, we felt like it was hard to survive because at one point there were only three of us contributing.

ME: Who was that? You, Yandsen, and who?

KSW: [Tey] Beng Tze who now runs RAW Art Space. He used that place as his painting studio. That was the last batch of people sharing: me, Yandsen, and Beng Tze.

Then, the rent increased and, at that time, RAW Art Space was already there in the city center so we thought perhaps we didn't need two spaces that do similar things.

So, we thought that if we weren’t really using the space for public events, then we should perhaps stop. But, as you can see from the KLEX (Kuala Lumpur Experimental Film, Video & Music Festival) website, SiCKL is mentioned as a producer. SiCKL does not have a base anymore but it still kinda stays as a collective.

ME: It seems like EMACM kind of became SiCKL and then it kind of became KLEX. Is that right?

KSW: Yeah.

ME: So it never really ended? It transformed and changed names?

KSW: Yeah, in a way. Also, I think it became more focused? Its direction became clearer. Because, for example, during the SiCKL time, we had our Open Lab series showcasing all kinds of artists and musicians in all styles. It was very friendly and inclusive but there was no clear direction.

Actually, I had a small drama with a member in the team due to the issue of having a clear direction regarding the kind of works we are dedicated to support as a collective. My argument was that we should have a focus and since the establishment of EMACM, our focus is on experimental work or work that is more unconventional and underground and so we should stay in that direction.

But of course, as you work with different people, these kinds of things happen. You will have different ways of working and different ideas. And sometimes, for things that I hold dearly, I can be quite stubborn.

SAMA-SAMA GUESTHOUSE MINI ALTERNATIVE ART FESTIVAL

ME: You mentioned that you were renting out the space for some time. Didn’t you also have some kind of informal residencies?

KSW: It was very informal. It was basically just musicians or artists writing to us. I think that was because there weren’t many platforms for experimental arts. Like, if they just google "experimental arts Kuala Lumpur," somehow we will pop up.

At the time, we had random people writing to us and they would give samples of their work and if we thought it was okay, we'd meet them and if we felt okay about the person, or the person was recommended by someone we trusted, then we were quite relaxed about letting them stay at the studio.

Also, at the time, we were quite inexperienced and just coming from a place like, "We love art, we just want to do what we love.” We were very naïve and idealistic. Around this time, we organized a no-budget festival called Sama-sama Guesthouse Mini Alternative Art Festival. It happened at the Guesthouse in this small historical town called Melaka. Basically the two people who planned out the whole festival were just me and Yandsen, with the generous support from the Guesthouse owner who allowed us to occupy the space for a weekend. With no funding at all, we gathered artworks from over 50 artists and performers. The participating artists were very generous and independent, with a strong DIY spirit to manage things by themselves. It was a very idealistic project and somehow it was realized in a memorable way, like a miracle. So, at the time, we didn't really think so much about how to sustain ourselves financially and things like that. It was only when we started to do KLEX that we figured that we actually need funding in order to sustain ourselves in the long term.

ME: But didn't that happen in the same year?

KSW: It happened in the same year but this festival happened before KLEX.

ME: Oh my god, you're crazy!

KSW: It came from a very rebellious sentiment because, at that time, we already had KLEX in mind. The idea for KLEX was actually initiated by the filmmaker Tomonari Nishikawa. He was the one who suggested that, since we had been doing SiCKL for a few years already, why don't we try to organize a festival and start doing things in a more professional way. Sau Bin [Yap] was actually in the first KLEX committee as well.

We had a lot of meetings about that first KLEX. It was just meeting after meeting about how to find money and things like that. Yandsen and I found it frustrating so we wondered if it was possible to make something happen without funding. I think it was just this kind of rebellious thinking that led us to make an experimental festival with no budget at all.

It was a very good experience for us not just because it actually pushed through but also because we saw that some people genuinely have the passion and enthusiasm to do things and, of course, we knew this would only happen once because people can’t just work for free all the time. But that’s okay, this one-time experience is enough to give us the courage to keep doing what we believe in.

KUALA LUMPUR EXPERIMENTAL FILM, VIDEO & MUSIC FESTIVAL (KLEX)

ME: How did you apply that learning to KLEX? Because KLEX became kind of big.

KSW: It's only bigger in terms of content but the team is actually very small. It's easier to discuss things and, little by little, we get to know the kinds of people we can work well with. Working with the right people is quite important. The team is getting smaller but more efficient. We have been working much faster and smoother in the past few years. We can focus more on the content, and our content does grow stronger in recent years.

Also, we now know how to say yes and no. In the very beginning, we felt that we were so inexperienced and so everything was “okay.” As a result, the quality was inconsistent. In one show, you would see something really good but also something that was not up to standard. Personally, I feel like in the recent editions, there generally has been a good standard in terms of content. But of course one thing that I still haven’t learned is how to get money. It's still not enough money. The KLEX committee still works for free!

Actually, the first KLEX... I don't know. Sau Bin is here. What do you think about the first KLEX? I think the first KLEX was a bit of a failure.

Sau Bin Yap (SBY): It is the first KLEX. How can it be a failure or a success? Either you're harsh with yourself or you're actually harsh to the people that were working there.

KSW: No, I think... it wasn't very organized.

SBY: It was the first time, Siew-Wai.

KSW: It was very last minute and I remember I was really sad on the opening night because only ten people came. The promotion wasn't good. I think I was also sick on the second day. I think I had diarrhea or something after the opening night.

Also, the setting wasn't very ideal. During some of the screenings, there were technical problems that we could have avoided had we prepared better. So, I don't know. Personally, I detected many problems with the first KLEX. After that, some left the team. For us who stayed, the only thing we wanted to do was to correct all the mistakes that we made during the first KLEX, to list them all down so that we don’t repeat them.

THREE EVENTS

Norberto “Peewee” Roldan (NR): These are not questions but I just would like you to recall three events which happened in 2007 and 2008. In 2007, Donna [Miranda] had a residency at Rimbun Dahan and her final output was a major production at the Annexe Central Market which was a big collaboration with SiCKL. Could you give us a little story regarding how that collaboration came about? How were you introduced to each other?

The next event was when, after the residency, Donna went back to KL with me and Joaquin [Roldan] and then she did a performance at your space.

Lastly, in 2008, you and Yong Yandsen came over to Manila to do a performance at Green Papaya. These are three events that I hope you can recall how they developed, how they were organized, and how was your experience of these happenings?

KSW: To be honest, I don't remember who introduced me to Donna but I remember somebody told us that there’s this very good dancer from Manila who is now at the Annexe Gallery and she would like to meet artists. It was probably someone from the Annexe Gallery. So, we just went there and talked with Donna and my first impression was that she is such a strong artist and I like her. I think that's how it started, it was quite random.

We started to have more conversations and she did a movement workshop which I think I took part in. In her performance project at The Annexe, I was actually involved as a musician, together with my peers from SiCKL. I really enjoyed the collaborations because Donna was very open to communication. After every rehearsal, she would ask everyone what we felt about it and if we had any thoughts or suggestions on how we could go about these things. She never placed herself in some authoritative position and she was always open for people to give feedback so she was very pleasant to work with.

SiCKL was the music coordinator for the [2007 Notthatbalai Art Festival’s] experimental music program. Actually, Donna’s appearance in that performance was random. We already had a program but we just decided on that day to call Donna and ask whether she wants to dance and she said yes. So we added one “encore act” with Donna, Yandsen, Aziz, and myself.

After Donna’s residency, she came back with Peewee [Roldan] and Joaquin, and we organized a SiCKL Open Lab for Donna to perform and collaborate with local musician Aziz. Aziz was also the artist that did all Open Lab series flyers for SiCKL from 2006. Also on the bill were Yandsen, Azmyl, and myself.

After that, we kind of became friends and then Yandsen and I were interested in going to Manila so we just talked to Donna and said, “Hey, we are coming. Can we do something?”

ME: And then you stayed at Peewee's house.

KSW: Yes, having met some Filipino artists in KL, we were curious about Manila. Both of us haven’t been to the Philippines, it was the first time! Tengal came to KL and stayed at SiCKL before we went to Manila. So we knew Tengal, Donna, and then we got to know Peewee at Green Papaya. And got to know turntablist Caliph8 [Arvin Nogueras].

Our residency at Green Papaya was very brief, I think it was only four or five days? We did some recording sessions with Tengal, Arvin, and others. And then Donna, Tengal, Yandsen, and I did a performance at Green Papaya where we improvised in different combinations. I remember it was a good night with a great atmosphere and meeting other Filipino artists and musicians at the event. Oh, and Donna and Peewee cooked dinner for us. So nice!

About our "networking," SiCKL was really not like a fully functioning art organization because we all had our day jobs and so we were doing this organizing work just whenever we could. It was quite hard to run it very “professionally." We just let things flow so it was more organic. For example, our relationship with Green Papaya was through Donna and it started as a friendship. Just as individuals that enjoy the company of each other. Actually most of our network works like this. It’s very seldom that we purposely go out trying to network with “the VIPs.” For us, it’s much more organic and random. For example, we played with some musicians or collaborated with some artists like Donna, and then we became friends. And when an opportunity arises, we think of our friends (or friends of friends…) and the collaboration happens. I would say that 90% of our network works like this.

ME: ruangrupa has a term for that: "Make Friends, Not Art.”

EMACM AND SiCKL TODAY

ME: What's the current status of EMACM and SiCKL? How are they now?

KSW: I think all of these "collectives" were basically formed by the same people and they didn't really end so they're just kind of inactive? They each morphed into the more currently active thing? As I said, SiCKL is no longer a space but it became the producer of KLEX. And EMACM never really disappeared. It's still there, but perhaps it changed into another form.

ME: So knowing what you know now with your experience, would you still form SiCKL the way that you did? What would be your ideal scenario? What is your ideal form of SiCKL?

KSW: I don't know. I think it is okay as it is? It's interesting because personally I never really think about the ideal scenarios of things. Perhaps I’m so used to imperfect circumstances? I think that all experiences are okay because eventually, they make us who we are today. It doesn't matter whether it failed or not. Maybe because it is a failure and you feel that you need to do something about it, and that makes you grow. In other words, in order to grow, you need that failure. So... I don't know. I think it's okay.

Maybe I should be a little bit more organized about my flyers so we can have a good list of events and artists we've worked with. Documentation and archiving. This is the aspect that we need to do a better job at. In a way, Facebook is good because we now create events there. If Facebook doesn't disappear, then at least we have some history we can retrieve. For the coming years, I hope that our team can afford to put more effort into documentation – posters, pictures, texts, and videos. Yes!

She received her BA in Media Study at University at Buffalo and MFA in Electronic Integrated Arts at Alfred University in USA, where she was based from 1998 to 2005. Siew-Wai has shown her works, curated projects and performed in Asia, Europe, Australia, Canada and the USA. She has a deep passion in experimental and improvisational arts, and is the co-founder and co-director of SiCKL and the Kuala Lumpur Experimental Film, Video & Music Festival (KLEX). She’s currently teaching at the Faculty of Creative Media, Multimedia University.

Prompts: Neighbors, coffee and tongue Pairing: BokuAka

Koutarou was awoken by something crashing and the muffled chatter from next door. He reached out for his phone and groaned. It wasn’t even ten in the morning yet! And his plan for waking up late and spending a well-earned lazy Sunday already seemed to be ruined by the noise from the other apartment.

It could only mean that someone was moving in the empty apartment after a year. He wondered which poor soul was going to live in the haunted apartment next door.

(Koutarou had himself heard furniture move on its own for a few nights…and there was no one living next door at the time! So, there was only one logical reason- it was haunted.)

Someone was dragging furniture right now even and Koutarou wished with all his heart that the ghost would show itself and scare his new neighbor away. No one deserved this torture which he was going through currently.

He covered his head with his pillow but it was too late now. He was wide awake and he knew he couldn’t fall asleep if he was woken once. Koutarou grumbled and left his bed. He’d probably give his neighbor a piece of his mind. He had every right to- and it was good to establish a few ground rules for being good neighbors…right? That was what the old lady downstairs had told him when he had kept a party late at night. You needed ground rules to be a good neighbor.

Koutarou decided he would meet his new neighbor right after getting ready. He brushed his teeth and and took a warm shower. He practiced his serious face in the mirror while he dried his hair and then focused on shaving.

“Look we need to talk- no wait this sounds as if I’m breaking up with my neighbor.” Koutarou frowned as he gelled up his hair. “Hi! I’m your neighbor Bokuto Koutarou! You ruined my lazy Sunday and we need to set up a few rules.” That also didn’t seem right.

He walked back to his room with his towel wrapped around his waist. “Hey, hey, hey neighbor! I’m from next door and- wait I need a welcoming present!” Koutarou frowned. So the the first order of business was to actually get a gift and then talk about the rules.

He quickly wore a shirt and threw on pants, and then searched around for a present in his house. He doubted any nearby stores would be open right now. He found a showpiece of an owl still packed in a cabinet. He still couldn’t find the perfect space for it and even though he didn’t really want to give it away, he supposed it would be a good present at the end of the day.

Koutarou still didn’t know how to greet his neighbor and talk about the rules. He decided he would freestyle it. He was confident in freestyling. He grabbed the owl show piece and left his apartment.

It seemed as if the movers had left already. Koutarou rang the bell and waited. It was right now that he started to wonder how his new neighbor would look like. Was it a sweet old lady? A couple? A drug dealer? A mafia boss under disguise? (He really hoped it wasn’t a mafia boss under disguise.)

The door opened a creak and someone peaked through the small space.

Koutarou yelped and kept his coffee aside. He had burnt his tongue. “Thams greath!”

He looked up at Akaashi and saw the other with an amused expression.

Akaashi shrugged and leaned back against his chair. “I’m not.”

“Can I help you unpack?” He ended up asking.

14. Looking for that silver lining... But it isn’t there.

30 Mar - Toby slept a little better in his make shift oxygenated box the night before and Junie does an amazing job checking on him thru the night. I think she needs to rest up more or she will fall sick... same goes for our helper Bel and mom. Without everyone helping out, i don’t think Junie and I could have managed this.  

Today is also D-day as we head into Dr Tham’s w the intention of giving Toby a risky dose of L-aspar. Right now it feels like this is the only thing that can save him, but it might also kill him. We decide together that it’s for the best. Emotions run high.. The mood in the clinic is sombre because they know Toby is gravely ill since they last saw him.

He survives the shot and we head back home where he rests all day. His legs are still weak and we just keep praying. Just like how some customers came over and prayed over Toby, Joo Mee my cousin also comes over and she too prays over him with holy oil. We are so touched because she was so wonderfully positive and she stays to chat for a long time.

1 April - Toby’s the same, refuses to eat so it’s syringe feeding all the way. He hates it and so do we. We go for car rides and we pray he makes it to his 14th birthday tomorrow.

2 April Tue - Happy Birthday puppy bear. Korkor and jiejie have been sleeping in the living room with you because this is the best arrangement. It’s been storming a lot lately and the nights are often filled with thunder and heavy downpours. We try our best to sleep through it. it make us tired during the day but being there with you means everything to us. We went to see Dr Tham today cos Toby is running out of Vetmedin and that’s very important to keep him alive. we ask if we should try acupuncture. 

Dr Tham advises against going to Dr Tai for acupuncture as he recounted that one of his lymphoma patients had his cancer spread because Dr Tham did acupuncture on him and the circulation improved and so the cancer had a free pass to other parts of the body. We deliberate and decide to go anyway tomorrow. If we stay on this current trend relying on food and meds, it feels like Toby will get progressively worse and die anyway.

3 April - We wait ages for Dr Tai. It cost us 3 hours at her clinic but it was worth it, Toby seems brighter after his acupuncture session with her and he also had an x-ray to determine what’s up with his system. She thinks he still has pancreatitis hence she prescribes Famatodine (Pepcid) which I think should help him get better faster so he can start eating on his own. She prescribes 2 Chinese herbal mixtures (HQT and EG) Both Toby swallowed without putting up a fight. The other two supplements she prescribed probiotics and also Tricosamine which is a mixture of glucosamine, chondritin and HA. She noted that Toby had fluid in his lungs on one side and asked us to step up the dose of Furosimide to ½ tab instead of the ¼ tab Dr Tham recommended. She also recommended foods rich in potassium e.g potatoes, banana and mushrooms will help the increase of absorption of nutrients and helping his back legs too.

X-rays showed that the gaps in his spine were too small and it was causing him discomfort. His back legs became very weak because of lack of circulation and pretty bad osteoarthritis. His lungs are fairly clear, heart is quite large and pressing against his trachea hence the breathing difficulties and this means we have to make sure when we feed him he’s sat at a 45 degree angle so that he won’t aspirate the food that is fed to him into his lungs.

Abdomen looks fairly clear, and his rib cage is puffed up because he is trying to to maximize the space in there because he needs to breathe and he expands it like fish gills. So she also taught us some massage techniques that might help him gain mobility.

Later in the evening, we change the feeding plan and give him black chicken instead of regular chicken and some MCT oil.. and this is where it got bad. He threw up and then we couldn’t stop it even after going back to see Dr Tai the next day. She gave him a jab and oral meds but it didn’t help.

4 April Thu - Based on the recommendations of Joo Mee’s pet nutritionist, we feed Toby coconut juice, watermelon juice and carrot juice. He can’t hold anything down at all. He wants water so badly but he cannot keep it down either.

We withheld liquids and gave him his heart meds spaced apart by 30min blocks. He keeps it down until we give him  coco water and honey. We are so worried but we try to wet his mouth and let him sleep it off. He eventually pukes the coco water and honey as well.

5 April Fri-  In the wee hours of the morning, Toby drinks some water and vomits again, I give him the oral anti-vomit meds and it still doesn’t work. WTF? So at 8+ we made the call and brought him into Jireh for an IV drip. He looks so much better after being hydrated and we are thankful that he’s stabilised a bit but now comes the tricky part of re-feeding… With cerenia and the IV drip in place, Toby was able to hold down his fluids - so far we have given toby his medication (vetmedin, lanoxin, furosimide, famatodine… for food he has had mussel powder, convalescence just a bit.., chicken and parsley, watermelon juice as it’s a diuretic). We space out the feedings and it takes up to an hour to finish it. He goes out to pee and his pee is evidently held in as the stream of pee looks string thin and forceful vs. his usual jetlike spout. Likely due to the IV, consumed fluids and diuretic medication.

We feed again just past 9, he’s given Vetmedin and left to rest for 30 mins. And then we followed up with super diliuted banana and chicken blends. Then he’s also given his antibiotics and steroids both which we skipped yesterday because he could not hold it in.

We really hope he keeps it in this tonight, seeing that he was given Cerenia at 9ish in the morning and now it’s a good 12 hours since then. His eyes are still gooey and Junie cleans it regularly and put both antibiotic eyedrops and the eye gel. He was given quite a fair bit of fluids so he may wee himself tonight but we don’t mind, he’s the best boy ever and we can always clean up after him no matter how tired we are.

June: His nose is also super dry and today I thought it was dried up food and I tried to peel off dried skin. Oof! That must’ve hurt him, I’m so stupid! Gonna rub more coco oil tomorrow to help him.

Monday May 15, 2017  9:25 a.m.  alone in the quiet computer room - not yet affected by cyber attack - scary stuff, considering all that is based on computers these days - my typewriter needs cleaning - but still there is paper and pen and I do have carbon paper and could make copies of what I write. All the things in my memory - a man who I believe was what we call a holocaust survivor - at some point I did exchange a few words with him, He was a longer, popping up here and there - and he typed extensive letters to the nyt, filling pages not leaving any margin anywhere, of course non were published but he attached them to a lamp post on the corner of 7th Street and Avenue A. I glanced at them occasionally. Also a form of publishing. I have not seen him in a while. Odd days. Then he showed me on his iphone that the predicted rainstorm was to happen in 10 minutes, huge down pour - I rushed to the boat house. found the last free chair under an umbrella on the patio, it rained a little, I read the nyt book review and when I saw the sun shining returned to the hawk scenario - there were several familiar faces, Carlos, great enthusiast, great photographer, he sends me emails, the 1931 fireboat Bruce - I hope I get to ride it - I talked with Eleanor - then did see a really threatening cloud hidden behind the bush - in front beautiful blue sky - I rushed for the bus, caught a #2 and while on the bus it poured - and stopped raining when I got off the bus. Ate the rest of my delicious Polish food and waited for a friend - she is the daughter of a friend and lives in Berlin - she did not come but a little while ago called on my cell phone and will come to my apartment at 11 - I said I would be there. Another evening that I spent reading - the book review - memoirs, memoirs, more memoirs. I tried my hand at it - was accused of navel gazing, indulgence - sadly never had the skill to get tham out "on the marketz' - still do continue to marvel at all the things people reveal these days and  I am glad for it. I also long have enjoyed documentaries and more and more are made and if only I was a bit more techno savvy I could watch them. Again - I also would have loved to make one. Once again ending of the note on gratitude for this here blog -  I'm enjoying myself writing it - I hope some readers enjoy it - and hallo Carrol, I vividly remember my last visit - three years ago? - have not though too often of you, thank you for thinking of me. Arriving at Tiger Cave Temple

Tiger Cave Temple is known locally as Wat Tham Seua to Thai people in the Krabi province and is located about 20 minutes from Krabi Airport. Betina and I had just finished our weekend retreat with Dropship Lifestyle at the Krabi Resort and a few nights on Phi Phi Island.

When we arrived back in Krabi early that morning by ferry, we didn’t have anywhere to stay until our late afternoon flight to Chiang Mai.  I knew we would have a long gap in between, so the night before I looked up nearby activities, so we could make the best use of our time.

Luckily, and undoubtedly, I knew there would be something.  I came across the Tiger Cave Temple and it seemed like a beautiful attraction to see, since we had a few hours, and better than waiting in the airport.

We found a place within the airport that would hold our bags until we returned.  It seemed a little strange at first, because it was basically a storefront that had some storage space behind the counter, but we trusted our belongings to them, and when we returned there was no issue.

I only mention this because I’ve heard several reports from backpackers and travelers over the years to never separate yourself from your bags, while traveling in SE Asia.

I’ve seen pictures of buses, where the bottom is hollowed out in the luggage space for little thieves to hide and rummage through your bags while you sit above unknowingly.

I’ve only heard stories, but have never known anyone personally to experience this, in any case, please do your own research, and if you don’t feel safe leaving your bag, keep it with you.

Once, we dropped our big bags off, we hired a taxi to drive us to Tiger Cave Temple.  Our driver, was very quiet, but friendly, most likely because of the language barrier.  I’ve realized that not everyone we meet in foreign countries are so eager to speak English with us.  Usually a few words, spoken in the local language helps open up communication, sometimes.

He agreed to drop us off and return to pick us up in approximately 3 hours, while we explored the caves, jungles and mountains of Tiger Cave Temple.

At that moment we had no idea how long or how difficult the climb would be.  First we, needed to find the path up to the viewpoint, but there were so many attractive decorations along the initial entrance walkway.

Almost immediately Betina and I began taking pictures and short video clips of our dramatic entrance. As we followed the walkway, we gazed at all of the shrines and these colorful structures and park benches where there were many monkeys running around mischievously.

I had to warn Betina, to secure her bags, because these deceptively cute little macaques (monkeys) will steal any small loose items that they can get their hands on.

We continued out on a path that would lead us to one of the many shrines and also to the caves and jungle behind the tall rock formation.

I am still not sure if I should call it a rock formation or a mountain.  I think rock formation is more fitting, but I could be wrong.

Welcome to the Jungle

The entrance to the temple was decorated with colorful flags, statues, and endless plants and wildlife. Yes, wildlife, no tigers, but many, many monkeys and different types of birds were all over the grounds.

With all of the beautiful distractions, we somehow, missed the staircase path to the pagoda and the famous Buddha at the top of the mountain(rock formation).

Instead, our curious meandering around, brought us to a staircase leading to the tiger caves, near the back of the temple grounds.  Before climbing the steep stairwell near the back, to what we thought was staircase to the top we read a map displaying a hiking trail through the forest and through caves so we proceeded on and figured we’d find our way to the top later.

At the first rest stop on the way up, a group of  Thai school children greeted us with smiles and innocent curiosity.

At the same moment, we realized that we were headed right back down the other side of the staircase to a trail that led to some of the caves.  Not knowing what to expect while exploring places like this is part of the fun, so we kept on walking.

We followed the trail along the base of the rock formation and dipped in and out of a few of the caves.  After exiting one of the caves we came across this marvelous rock face with Buddha shrines and more intricate decorations than you can count around it.

We took a few pics in this area and moved back onto the trail where we passed many of the monks living quarters.  Even some of the monks were out doing laundry inconspicuously in a small concrete structure under the cover of massive and very, very old trees.

I took note of our location near the rock formation and continued on the trail with Betina who was ill-prepared for a muddy trek through the forest wearing a long casual cotton dress and flat sandals.

Nevertheless, Betina was already traipsing over fallen trees, muddy ditches, and rocky outcroppings in her flat sandals as I shook my head at times, in disbelief. Her sandals had leather straps woven around her ankles for support, but no grip on the soles at all.

She seemed unaffected by the challenge and pressed on with her relentless photo snapping and slippery side-stepping through the forest trail.  We had no idea beforehand, that our little layover day trip was going to be so intense.

There is a saying that goes:

“If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?”

Well according to many eastern philosophies, as long as their are ears to perceive it, it will be heard.

Hmm? Anyway,  I mention this because as we were beginning our trek deeper into the woods, some very large tree branches broke from high along the side of the rock formation with the loudest crash you can imagine!  It sounded like explosives being detonated!

Now hearing this in the middle of the forest with only the sounds of nature made it even more frightening and dramatic.  After the shock, then came, the loud scraping of the tree limbs as it fell from way high above us, and landing with a tremendous crash to the ground.

Luckily, we weren’t too close to where it landed, but it really felt like it.  Neither one of us was recording video at that moment, else I would definitely share it.  It was a reminder of how unpredictable nature can really be and anything can happen at anytime.  We won’t let that stop us from exploring though.

Tiger Cave Temple – The Climb and the Summit

After making our way out of the forest, we still hadn’t found the staircase to the famous viewpoint that we came to see in the first place and we were running out of time.  Once we found the sign pointing to the way up we began climbing.

I am not absolutely certain when, but according to Betina we had only made it about 200 steps up before realizing, how difficult it really was going to be and if it was realistic or even possible to make it to the top in an hour and a half and back down.

With our carry-on luggage on our backs we pressed on, despite sweating profusely and feeling the burn in our legs and feet.  Not even a quarter of the way up this steep imposing staircase my shirt was soaking wet and seeping through to my backpack, and the same was true for Betina.

However, we decided we would continue slowly if need be.  Step by step.

This climb, proved to be one of the most difficult physical challenges, I have ever taken on.  Initially, I believe we took it very lightly, but as time appeared to slow down and the packs on our backs became more and more burdensome.

Somehow our casual exploration had just transformed into a deep struggle of mind over matter.

Taking a moment to breathe, before continuing the brutal climb to the top

  I don’t know if it was because we are both stubborn, competitive, or just plain hard-headed.

Or, maybe it was just inspiration and our passion for adventure and facing challenges.

Yeah, the latter sounds better.

The motivational and inspirational analogy of climbing to the mountain top, we’ve heard so many times throughout our lives, had now manifested in the physical sense.

Everyone has their struggles to varying degrees, but to some it is so much more severe.  I could go on, but instead, I will say I am grateful, that we are in good health and had the strength to keep climbing until we reached the summit.

A few people turned around and climbed back down the stairs defeated, but what was inspiring was meeting a few people coming down that were cheering us on claiming that there wasn’t much further to climb to reach the top.

We passed the 3/4 mark and I saw people who were clearly not in the best physical shape coming down praising how beautiful the view was and how it was well worth the sweat and tears.

Pitifully, I thought, “Well, if they can do it, I can do it!”

When we reached the top there was a water fountain at the very end of the staircase and a little further a place to take off your shoes and walk over to the massive Buddha statue and Pagoda at the very top of the rock formation.

I still cannot imagine what great effort it took to build these enormous structures on the top of such a narrow rock formation.

Was it worth the strenuous climb to the top?  Yes.  It was an overcast afternoon, so our photos did not come out as vibrant as we would have liked, but the entire experience is one I will never forget.  It was also a great lesson in life, relating to working hard for what you want, whether it be in your relationships, your career or even your health and lifestyle.

Anything worth having doesn’t usually come easy and sometimes it takes many more steps, than you think you can bear.

However, you only need to take one step at a time to reach your goals and don’t give up until you reach them.

Oh!  I didn’t even mention how difficult it was to climb back down!  Choo! Almost as difficult as the climb up. That’s when most of the pics looking down were taken.  Because we had to stop every 25 steps to rest.

FROM A REBELLIOUS SENTIMENT A Conversation with Kok Siew-Wai on SiCKL (Kuala Lumpur, 2006-2010)

In late 2005, Kok Siew-Wai returned to Malaysia after having lived in the US for over seven years. Shortly after, she co-founded Studio in Cheras Kuala Lumpur (SiCKL), an initiative which sought to promote experimentation across different media, with Yong Yandsen and other members from Experimental Musicians and Artists Co-operative Malaysia (EMACM). It has since ceased its operations but in some ways transformed into the Kuala Lumpur Experimental Film, Video & Music Festival (KLEX) in 2010. In this conversation, we discuss how SiCKL was formed, the chaos that ensued and the friendships made along the way, and how it all led to KLEX.

MEETING THE GANG

Merv Espina (ME): We’d like to concentrate on SiCKL (Studio in Cheras Kuala Lumpur) and maybe discuss EMACM (Experimental Musicians and Artists Co-operative Malaysia) as well.

Kok Siew-Wai (KSW): I joined a bit later as EMACM was formed before I returned to Kuala Lumpur. I was studying in the US and only came back in late 2005, around Christmas time. About two weeks after I came back, I went to Goh Lee Kwang’s solo show at Rumah Air Panas (RAP). It was a show with the dancer [Lee] Swee Keong. He asked me to document his performance. [Yong] Yandsen, Tham Kar-Mun, [Yeoh] Yin-Pin, and a bunch of musicians were there at the show. They were playing improvised music and, before I went to the US, I had never heard improvised music in Malaysia so I was really surprised hearing it there.

We started to converse and they mentioned some musicians that inspired them like Peter Brötzmann. I told them that I’ve seen Brötzmann live in the US and they were surprised. Then we just kept talking and became friends. In January 2006, I did a talk at RAP and invited Yandsen to perform with me.

After that, Yandsen and I talked about renting a space for music practice and artists’ gatherings. We got excited and looked around and found a place, and that became SiCKL.

HAPPENINGS AT THE STUDIO

KSW: We kind of had an informal opening ceremony for SiCKL and invited Joe Kidd to open the space for us, with a durian. When we opened it and the smell was like, "ahh..." It’s a fruit with a strong “personality,” definitely not for everyone, ha!

ME: It's officially open, you can smell it. What other funny weird stuff happened in that space?

KSW: There's this dancer, Low Shee Hoe, who brought in a group of young female dancers, and they were just very cute and funny. After the high energy performance, I don't know how, everybody just got into a dancing mood and it kind of became like a trance dancing party. Everyone was dancing and the musicians were playing and the audience were also banging on tables and chairs.

There was also one time that we had zero audience. I remember I was performing, Yandsen was performing, and Azmyl Yunor. Azmyl is a folk singer and he ended up doing a spontaneous stand-up comedy set. It was hilarious! There was no audience and we were like, “Why don't we just perform for each other? We are performers. And we are audience too!” So, we decided to go on anyway because the show must always go on!

Also, at one point, part of SiCKL became kind of like a storage for Yandsen's company which is a supplier of Chinese herbs. I think they had too much goods that time and he needed more space so part of the studio was stacked with so many Chinese herbs boxes that when you entered the studio, you could smell them.

ME: What did your neighbors think of you?

KSW: Our neighbor changes. At one point, it was like some kind of educational center. I think they just thought we were a little strange.

ME: They never attended your performances?

KSW: No. But I remember one funny thing, maybe two floors below us, there was a small church. During one of our events, they were also having one and so when our audience came up, they thought they were going to the church. So the church people were greeting our audience and shaking their hands. Our audience was confused. It’s quite funny.

TRANSFORMATIONS

KSW: Eventually, Yandsen and I were like, “If it’s just us two, the rent is too expensive. We need to ask more people to pay with us.” So, we approached other EMACM members.

Some of them decided to make SiCKL the base of EMACM. That’s how it started basically. Then of course, people come and go, and for some of them, experimental music wasn’t the only thing they did. Some did it for a while before returning to what they are actually more comfortable with. Basically, the ones who stayed to play purely experimental and improvised music from that group were Yandsen, Goh Lee Kwang, and myself.

The two of us became the core members in terms of organization. I ended up doing a lot of the writing and paperwork. Yandsen was the one who took care of technical things. He would be the stage manager during events. And then we both discussed and decided on the content of the programs. Actually, we still work with this structure until today.

ME: So how did you financially sustain that space?

KSW: We have day jobs!

ME: But how many of you contributed? What was the logistical dynamic in sustaining the space financially?

KSW: The space had no official funding at all so basically it was just all the members contributing. At first, everyone contributed together and then, little by little, some pulled out for different reasons. We could understand because some people didn't have full-time jobs so the ones who had stable jobs, like me and Yandsen, tended to contribute a little bit more.

Eventually, we had other people who were not from the initial group coming in to share the studio with us. At one point, there was a theater group who came in and used the space for theater rehearsals. Sometimes, dancers or actor groups would rent it for one or two weeks. But yes, financially, we felt like it was hard to survive because at one point there were only three of us contributing.

ME: Who was that? You, Yandsen, and who?

KSW: [Tey] Beng Tze who now runs RAW Art Space. He used that place as his painting studio. That was the last batch of people sharing: me, Yandsen, and Beng Tze.

Then, the rent increased and, at that time, RAW Art Space was already there in the city center so we thought perhaps we didn't need two spaces that do similar things.

So, we thought that if we weren’t really using the space for public events, then we should perhaps stop. But, as you can see from the KLEX (Kuala Lumpur Experimental Film, Video & Music Festival) website, SiCKL is mentioned as a producer. SiCKL does not have a base anymore but it still kinda stays as a collective.

ME: It seems like EMACM kind of became SiCKL and then it kind of became KLEX. Is that right?

KSW: Yeah.

ME: So it never really ended? It transformed and changed names?

KSW: Yeah, in a way. Also, I think it became more focused? Its direction became clearer. Because, for example, during the SiCKL time, we had our Open Lab series showcasing all kinds of artists and musicians in all styles. It was very friendly and inclusive but there was no clear direction.

Actually, I had a small drama with a member in the team due to the issue of having a clear direction regarding the kind of works we are dedicated to support as a collective. My argument was that we should have a focus and since the establishment of EMACM, our focus is on experimental work or work that is more unconventional and underground and so we should stay in that direction.

But of course, as you work with different people, these kinds of things happen. You will have different ways of working and different ideas. And sometimes, for things that I hold dearly, I can be quite stubborn.

SAMA-SAMA GUESTHOUSE MINI ALTERNATIVE ART FESTIVAL

ME: You mentioned that you were renting out the space for some time. Didn’t you also have some kind of informal residencies?

KSW: It was very informal. It was basically just musicians or artists writing to us. I think that was because there weren’t many platforms for experimental arts. Like, if they just google "experimental arts Kuala Lumpur," somehow we will pop up.

At the time, we had random people writing to us and they would give samples of their work and if we thought it was okay, we'd meet them and if we felt okay about the person, or the person was recommended by someone we trusted, then we were quite relaxed about letting them stay at the studio.

Also, at the time, we were quite inexperienced and just coming from a place like, "We love art, we just want to do what we love.” We were very naïve and idealistic. Around this time, we organized a no-budget festival called Sama-sama Guesthouse Mini Alternative Art Festival. It happened at the Guesthouse in this small historical town called Melaka. Basically the two people who planned out the whole festival were just me and Yandsen, with the generous support from the Guesthouse owner who allowed us to occupy the space for a weekend. With no funding at all, we gathered artworks from over 50 artists and performers. The participating artists were very generous and independent, with a strong DIY spirit to manage things by themselves. It was a very idealistic project and somehow it was realized in a memorable way, like a miracle. So, at the time, we didn't really think so much about how to sustain ourselves financially and things like that. It was only when we started to do KLEX that we figured that we actually need funding in order to sustain ourselves in the long term.

ME: But didn't that happen in the same year?

KSW: It happened in the same year but this festival happened before KLEX.

ME: Oh my god, you're crazy!

KSW: It came from a very rebellious sentiment because, at that time, we already had KLEX in mind. The idea for KLEX was actually initiated by the filmmaker Tomonari Nishikawa. He was the one who suggested that, since we had been doing SiCKL for a few years already, why don't we try to organize a festival and start doing things in a more professional way. Sau Bin [Yap] was actually in the first KLEX committee as well.

We had a lot of meetings about that first KLEX. It was just meeting after meeting about how to find money and things like that. Yandsen and I found it frustrating so we wondered if it was possible to make something happen without funding. I think it was just this kind of rebellious thinking that led us to make an experimental festival with no budget at all.

It was a very good experience for us not just because it actually pushed through but also because we saw that some people genuinely have the passion and enthusiasm to do things and, of course, we knew this would only happen once because people can’t just work for free all the time. But that’s okay, this one-time experience is enough to give us the courage to keep doing what we believe in.

KUALA LUMPUR EXPERIMENTAL FILM, VIDEO & MUSIC FESTIVAL (KLEX)

ME: How did you apply that learning to KLEX? Because KLEX became kind of big.

KSW: It's only bigger in terms of content but the team is actually very small. It's easier to discuss things and, little by little, we get to know the kinds of people we can work well with. Working with the right people is quite important. The team is getting smaller but more efficient. We have been working much faster and smoother in the past few years. We can focus more on the content, and our content does grow stronger in recent years.

Also, we now know how to say yes and no. In the very beginning, we felt that we were so inexperienced and so everything was “okay.” As a result, the quality was inconsistent. In one show, you would see something really good but also something that was not up to standard. Personally, I feel like in the recent editions, there generally has been a good standard in terms of content. But of course one thing that I still haven’t learned is how to get money. It's still not enough money. The KLEX committee still works for free!

Actually, the first KLEX... I don't know. Sau Bin is here. What do you think about the first KLEX? I think the first KLEX was a bit of a failure.

Sau Bin Yap (SBY): It is the first KLEX. How can it be a failure or a success? Either you're harsh with yourself or you're actually harsh to the people that were working there.

KSW: No, I think... it wasn't very organized.

SBY: It was the first time, Siew-Wai.

KSW: It was very last minute and I remember I was really sad on the opening night because only ten people came. The promotion wasn't good. I think I was also sick on the second day. I think I had diarrhea or something after the opening night.

Also, the setting wasn't very ideal. During some of the screenings, there were technical problems that we could have avoided had we prepared better. So, I don't know. Personally, I detected many problems with the first KLEX. After that, some left the team. For us who stayed, the only thing we wanted to do was to correct all the mistakes that we made during the first KLEX, to list them all down so that we don’t repeat them.

THREE EVENTS

Norberto “Peewee” Roldan (NR): These are not questions but I just would like you to recall three events which happened in 2007 and 2008. In 2007, Donna [Miranda] had a residency at Rimbun Dahan and her final output was a major production at the Annexe Central Market which was a big collaboration with SiCKL. Could you give us a little story regarding how that collaboration came about? How were you introduced to each other?

The next event was when, after the residency, Donna went back to KL with me and Joaquin [Roldan] and then she did a performance at your space.

Lastly, in 2008, you and Yong Yandsen came over to Manila to do a performance at Green Papaya. These are three events that I hope you can recall how they developed, how they were organized, and how was your experience of these happenings?

KSW: To be honest, I don't remember who introduced me to Donna but I remember somebody told us that there’s this very good dancer from Manila who is now at the Annexe Gallery and she would like to meet artists. It was probably someone from the Annexe Gallery. So, we just went there and talked with Donna and my first impression was that she is such a strong artist and I like her. I think that's how it started, it was quite random.

We started to have more conversations and she did a movement workshop which I think I took part in. In her performance project at The Annexe, I was actually involved as a musician, together with my peers from SiCKL. I really enjoyed the collaborations because Donna was very open to communication. After every rehearsal, she would ask everyone what we felt about it and if we had any thoughts or suggestions on how we could go about these things. She never placed herself in some authoritative position and she was always open for people to give feedback so she was very pleasant to work with.

SiCKL was the music coordinator for the [2007 Notthatbalai Art Festival’s] experimental music program. Actually, Donna’s appearance in that performance was random. We already had a program but we just decided on that day to call Donna and ask whether she wants to dance and she said yes. So we added one “encore act” with Donna, Yandsen, Aziz, and myself.

After Donna’s residency, she came back with Peewee [Roldan] and Joaquin, and we organized a SiCKL Open Lab for Donna to perform and collaborate with local musician Aziz. Aziz was also the artist that did all Open Lab series flyers for SiCKL from 2006. Also on the bill were Yandsen, Azmyl, and myself.

After that, we kind of became friends and then Yandsen and I were interested in going to Manila so we just talked to Donna and said, “Hey, we are coming. Can we do something?”

ME: And then you stayed at Peewee's house.

KSW: Yes, having met some Filipino artists in KL, we were curious about Manila. Both of us haven’t been to the Philippines, it was the first time! Tengal came to KL and stayed at SiCKL before we went to Manila. So we knew Tengal, Donna, and then we got to know Peewee at Green Papaya. And got to know turntablist Caliph8 [Arvin Nogueras].

Our residency at Green Papaya was very brief, I think it was only four or five days? We did some recording sessions with Tengal, Arvin, and others. And then Donna, Tengal, Yandsen, and I did a performance at Green Papaya where we improvised in different combinations. I remember it was a good night with a great atmosphere and meeting other Filipino artists and musicians at the event. Oh, and Donna and Peewee cooked dinner for us. So nice!

About our "networking," SiCKL was really not like a fully functioning art organization because we all had our day jobs and so we were doing this organizing work just whenever we could. It was quite hard to run it very “professionally." We just let things flow so it was more organic. For example, our relationship with Green Papaya was through Donna and it started as a friendship. Just as individuals that enjoy the company of each other. Actually most of our network works like this. It’s very seldom that we purposely go out trying to network with “the VIPs.” For us, it’s much more organic and random. For example, we played with some musicians or collaborated with some artists like Donna, and then we became friends. And when an opportunity arises, we think of our friends (or friends of friends…) and the collaboration happens. I would say that 90% of our network works like this.

ME: ruangrupa has a term for that: "Make Friends, Not Art.”

EMACM AND SiCKL TODAY

ME: What's the current status of EMACM and SiCKL? How are they now?

KSW: I think all of these "collectives" were basically formed by the same people and they didn't really end so they're just kind of inactive? They each morphed into the more currently active thing? As I said, SiCKL is no longer a space but it became the producer of KLEX. And EMACM never really disappeared. It's still there, but perhaps it changed into another form.

ME: So knowing what you know now with your experience, would you still form SiCKL the way that you did? What would be your ideal scenario? What is your ideal form of SiCKL?

KSW: I don't know. I think it is okay as it is? It's interesting because personally I never really think about the ideal scenarios of things. Perhaps I’m so used to imperfect circumstances? I think that all experiences are okay because eventually, they make us who we are today. It doesn't matter whether it failed or not. Maybe because it is a failure and you feel that you need to do something about it, and that makes you grow. In other words, in order to grow, you need that failure. So... I don't know. I think it's okay.
