the script website ive been messing with has like. apparently an early draft of the first pirates of the caribbean movie? it’s. something
Tumblr media
a lot of the most Iconic lines are. worded differently (very awkwardly) or straight up not there so im wondering how much was fixed up later and how much was adlibbed/adapted by the actors
but the worst discovery i had is that my boy ragetti originally didnt even have a name and was just referred to as “smoldering pirate” because he was That Guy Who Got Hit In The Face With Coals. hes also never mentioned again after this point (the scene with the dresses isn’t there, etc)
Tumblr media
theres also some lines that were later changed that alters. quite a bit more than just word choice
Tumblr media
the final line is “me, I could let you drown. ...But I can’t sail this ship to Tortuga all by me lonesome, savvy?” (turga” is just a typo I think) (a lot of these scripts are completely riddled with typos im Not Sure Why)
in other words jack originally could have done without will from a technical standpoint but chooses to spare him in a moral decision, apparently based in conscience, but was changed to caring nothing about will’s wellbeing or his own morality but spares him because he needs him

i dont remember this happening? it sounds like there was originally going to be more in the cave at the isla de muerte meant to look like the original ride, which is neat but didn’t make it in apparently. unless i just am forgetting it entirely

elizabeth was supposed to end up wearing men’s clothes by the end of the movie originally and refused to take Anyone’s shit
this scene seems to have been adapted into one of the later movies though because i remember there being a subplot with elizabeth dressed as a man and jack saying “I happen to have no dress available” or something but i forget which movie that was
norrington is also more... willing to let elizabeth have her way, he actually retracts his proposal right after she accepts it because he realizes her heart isn’t in it (which he still ends up doing in the final movie, but. he does it much sooner in this version of the script)
Tumblr media
im laughing at this too

jack’s execution escape isn’t even there, it’s will who’s being sentenced instead but governor swann overrules it immediately to cheering applause, rather than the. more quiet revelation he has in the final movie (which i like much better)
Tumblr media
meanwhile it is. very, very blatantly implied that norrington himself actually let jack go rather than just exasperatedly accepting it when jack ends up escaping anyway
