If Agent Reign were to be canon in the future, what is your ideal picture of that journey? Like, with everything that's already happened in the past episodes and going forward how would you write Agent Reign and at which pacing? Do you have headcanons?
oh, i have a million headcanons, a lot of which i plan to write…but it would definitely be a slowburn with like… a lot of awkward flirtation in between the angst. so uh…supercorp 2.0.
but basically i’m a fan of sam/reign being split, and sam surviving while reign is destroyed. it’s one of the many times in sam arias’ life where she has everything taken away from her and she needs to start over AGAIN. somehow, she retains all the powers from Reign, but maybe only keeps some of the memories of it all (haven’t decided where i fall on this - i like her to forget parts, while also having to come to terms with everything that has happened). so, she learns through third parties (the news, her friends, etc) what reign has done specifically, and she’s just devastated by all of it…each new tidbit of information is a new wound, and soon she really just can’t take all the destruction she’s caused. at the same time, she’s also trying to recover her memories as sam AND deal with the fact that she has all these new powers, but she’s terrified and afraid of hurting everyone again. we see sam struggle MIGHTILY as she tries to sort through her new reality. she’s got these chaotic memories: she remembers some things, but its jumbled and confused… i.e. did lena really keep her in a lab and try to save her? was the valley of juru real? the fortress? did alex really try to help her? how did alex and ruby get so close? and why does alex look at her like… ~that~… ya know, angst of that nature, because i’m a monster.
i see alex trying so hard to give her space, but also wanting desperately to help. she obviously offers to stay with ruby whenever she can, and that’s kind of how they begin to heal…. because sam can tell ruby adores alex, and alex just steps up and starts helping while sam is really struggling. sam doesn’t open up about it right away…she doesn’t tell her about the nightmares, or the fact that she breaks the kitchen cabinets or the wooden door frames of her house by accident every day, nor does she confess about the fact that she’s too scared to touch ruby ever again….but she lets alex quietly help with mundane things. she lets her run errands, and pick up ruby from school, and bring dinner over because it’s what she needs and it’s all she can handle right now. and alex knows. alex sees the strain on sam’s face, and sees the sadness in her eyes, but she never pushes. she quietly offers to fix things when sam breaks them, and she never flinches when sam comes into a room, which is something so refreshing…because sam does. sam startles easily now, and her senses are so enhanced that anytime someone touches her, she practically jumps out of her skin. but alex is soft, and gentle, and talks evenly, and knows how to approach her without scaring her. and even though sam is not kara, alex shows sam how to be human again. its a new challenge, because kara only had to learn it once. sam has been human all her life, and now its the little things she needs to be re-introduced to…but alex just quietly waits it out by showing up.
sam DOES finally start confiding in someone, though. not surprisingly, it’s lena, because lena stands by her and supports her and helps her the most. that’s sam’s best friend, and lena knows her the best and the longest….and even though some memories have shifted, sam doesn’t forget lena. she doesn’t forget what lena’s done for her, or what lena means to her. so sam finds it easier to rely on lena, because she trusts her. and that’s where we see her try to work through a lot of her issues. she asks lena questions about what happened when she was reign, and lena always tells her the truth, even though it’s hard. and sam swallows the guilt every time lena has to tell her about another horrible thing she’s done. and she cries and cries and asks for forgiveness, but lena just holds her close and tells her that no one blames her. but sam apologizes anyway, and lena forgives her always. on quieter nights, sam asks questions about her and alex, and why she’s so NICE and why she comes around when sam is still a danger to everyone. and lena just smiles and tells her that it’s alex, and that’s what alex does. sam finally just asks lena, “she cares about me?” and lena just softly smiles and explains, “she really does.”
i think the kara-sam relationship would be a hugeeee bonus to kara’s journey as well. lena would go to her for help (barring where they stand with the reveal, but even if lena doesn’t know kara’s identity, she would go to her best friend with all of the weight of the sam situation anyway). and kara would listen. she would listen as lena explains how GOOD sam is, and how shaken up she is…. how she must be so terrified with her new powers, and how she just needs help to learn how to harness them. and kara would. she would try so hard to help sam, and to teach her about krypton, and suggest for them to train together and bond. sam would refuse at first; being too afraid to go back to that place again to let her mind and her powers actually fly free, for the first time since reign. but kara would be patient, and would find ways to coax it out of her while inspiring her. and sam would finally learn to trust kara enough to gradually start to train with her. i think they’d have a really rocky, tentative relationship but oh wow would it be AMAZING to get the real mentorship storyline between kara/sam that we deserve. plus, it’s an excuse to really delve deeper into krypton lore. kara would explain to her exactly why and how the worldkillers came to be, and help sam deal with the aftermath of it all. it would be an opportunity for kara to teach sam what she knows about ~their~ home, and maybe teach it in a way she wishes she had been taught. there are bad sides to krypton, as sam knows firsthand, and maybe the two of them would be able to appreciate krypton for what it was REALLY, and not this idealized form of it. it would be a cathartic process for kara to finally make peace with her family’s legacy, and what it has become, and of course it would be the real road to recovery for sam as she learns her true identity. (bonus – sam teaches kara the truth about the luthors, and small tidbits about lena. it’s how kara finally starts to wrap her head around her feelings for lena, and the two of them both go on a ‘loving lena luthor’ fest every time they’re together. but sam is thrilled because she knows that lena is desperately in love with kara, and to see that love be returned…well that’s exactly what lena luthor deserves).
all the while, there would definitely be little fluffy moments happening between alex/sam, as they’re navigating sam’s new life. alex, despite being fantastic with sam most of the time, is still an awkward flustered disaster anytime sam looks in her direction, just because she looks like ~that~. and sam, for all her sadness and struggle, can’t help but notice how hot alex is, and how it seems to set every single one of her nerves on fire. how sometimes, sam breaks things whenever she thinks of alex, and it’s simply because she’s excited or distracted, not always because she’s scared or trying to control her powers. and it’s silly, and cute, and when that happens, sam is just a flustered embarrassed mess because she feels like a goofy teenager. and they’d have awkward flirtatious conversations that shouldn’t be flirtatious and alex would start checking up on sam at work and bringing her food on some days when she’s able (because danvers sisters love feeding their girls) and sam wouldn’t know what she’s done to deserve this but she just knows for a few minutes, when alex is by her side, life isn’t so scary and she actually smiles again. they’re also lowkey already basically dating, because alex and ruby have gotten so close, and ruby tells sam constantly how cool and amazing alex is, almost to the point where she’s agentreign shipper #1…and sam wants to believe alex likes her like that, but her self esteem has taken such a hit that she doesn’t want to let herself get too excited at the prospect. but of course, there’s lena, always in her ear screaming at sam to open her eyes– ‘that girl is not subtle’. to which sam obviously bites back, “coming from you? that’s rich.”
alex also takes on some of the training sessions with sam, which would be DELICIOUS. i already wrote about this, but that would be amazing potential for sam to start to really open up with alex, and also learn from her…and i’d love to see alex teach sam how to own her strength and be the hero she’s capable of being. i think they’d go through ups and downs, sam would have an emotional moment when she realizes alex had a broken leg and it was because of her… but their training sessions would lead to more sexual tension until finally, finally, it’s too much to handle and they both crack and we get an absolutely fire first kiss.
and thennnnn everything is chaos and oh god, there’s feelings, and sam is all ‘what have i done’ and alex is all ‘i’ve ruined everything’ and these two gay idiots can’t seem to focus on anything except trying to avoid each other (which, of course, they’re painfully unsuccessful because their lives are just so intertwined at this point that they literally run into each other at the DEO)… and they try to brush it off, but alex is ready to explode with wondering what sam really wants, and sam doesn’t get why alex would choose HER – but then of course, typical dramatic fashion, they’d be interrupted by whatever big bad of the season (or probably just lillian cuz i miss that bitch and it’s time for luthor shenanigans). of course, whatever lillian pulls will force sam to actually help kara and alex in the field, and then we see sam having to save alex (or something dramatic and extra and gay) and sam realizes a) she actually IS a hero, and always has been and b) she is absolutely NOT willing to lose alex no matter what so feelings be damned they need to figure this out bc they’re in love blah blah blah also sam has a sexy new superhero suit, and alex is also in love with her and they bang and save the world, the end.
also lena luthor has never done anything wrong in her life and she finally bangs supergirl the way rao intended.
