sooo anyway time to talk about Obake again, are we surprised? So it’s obvious that in the series, Obake is pretty unempathetic. He only cares about a few people and is pretty quick to abandon them when they fail him. The only time he’s shown care for anyone is with Trina, and when he sent Baymax to save Hiro (after trying to kill his family, friends, and everyone in his city).
Of course, a lot of this is because he just can’t tell right from wrong because brain tumor/damage (I’m more on the tumor side of things because Baymax said it was fixable and you can’t exactly fix brain damage) But also I think it’s kiiinda ableist to say the low empathy came from the accident bc like yeah not telling right from wrong is Bad and really hurts people but low empathy isn’t in and of itself a bad thing and doesn’t inherently harm others (I know because I have it myself). So I choose to believe he had low empathy before the accident because fuck it he’s bad rep but I don’t get much over here in Stigmatized Symptoms Land.
The whole thing about all the bad things about him being from a brain tumor is a little ableist in and of itself bc it’s like “hey this kid was completely normal but the disability made him Bad”. But despite it, I do think it was an interesting move character wise and I wouldn’t have liked him nearly as much if he knew right from wrong and was evil by choice.. so it’s complicated. So I kind of fix it for myself by being like “yep, this kid did have the Stigmatized Symptom (low empathy) before the accident and then that accident just fucked him up big time and shoved him down a dark path which cut him off from anyone that could have helped him adjust to the acquired amorality and eventually blurred his view of the world so much that he became a full-on villain”
TL, DR: Obake had low empathy before the accident and it’s ableist to blame it on the brain tumor because low empathy isn’t inherently bad or damaging to other people.
#also like come on I can’t write young Obake as an empath it feels gross#he’s supposed to be shit with emotions and only care about a few people that are similar to him#also this rant is very incoherent I am sorry#I have a point and I tried to get it across here#big hero 6#big hero 6 the series#bh6 obake#young obake#bh6#bh6 the series#bob aken#obake#big hero six#bh6 headcanons#nyx rants about bh6

F it we ball here have my character studies of the homicipher boys bc my ass has been knee deep in this game for making the mod and i need to place my notes somewhere anyway. Call me homicipher matpat...
SPOILERS. Obviously..
Crawling
Goal: stay with Adami
Abilities: intelligence, knowledge of the layout of the other world, knowledge of how to survive encounters with aggressive entities, physical strength [strong upper body, able to kill Stitch with no weapons],speed [can go as fast as a person running while crawling]
Crawling works as Adami's primary tutorial trough the otherworld. It's not clear what exactly caused his infatuation with her since it's near instant after seeing her for the first time. He has an understanding of many locations and people, as well as how the world works and what Adami wants to ask of him. He's playful, defaulting to a smile as his neutral state, and he's amidst the few characters to produce sound in-game. Usually giggles or cries. He's also acting as the male lead, and most of his endings and interactions can be read as romantic, being one of the only characters to say he likes Adami. (Other being Scarletella)
Extra: Crawling is able to stand but he refers to being bad at using his legs. When he does stand, he walks slowly and sluggishly as compared to his ability to nearly sprint while on all fours. Confirming this.
Extra: Yatsunagi said in a tweet that if you choose to exit the otherworld whitout Crawling, he will remain waiting there forever waiting for Adami to return., which is reminescent of the story of Hachiko the dog, who waited at the station for his owner to return forever.
Extra: in some concept art, Crawling is shown to be a similar height to Silvair when standing up
Scarletella
Goal: obtain Adami's name
Abilities: projection, reality warping of some sort, illusions, telepathy, teleportation, creating and controlling sub spaces or larger illusions [blood dimension, ghost apartments], free roam between worlds [his projected body only]
Scarletella works as the main antagonist of the game. He is the reason Adami happened across the otherworld, scaring her towards an entrance. He was an urban legend that haunted the ghost apartments, a location that only appears on rainy days, where Adami was presumedly dumping bodies or leading people there to kill them. This causes Scarlet to grow an infatuation with Adami, as he would feed on the corpses she left there, and for him to mistakenly assume she was courting him by feeding him corpses. Scarletella mostly affects Adami through afflicting her mind, trying to break her into giving him her name.
Extra: he's possibly inspired by a Kasa-obake, a type of yokai that's thought to be a tsukumogami, an object that if left abandonned long enough, will gain life. The Kasa-Obake is a living red umbrella, though those umbrellas are usually traditional umbrellas and take the shape of an umbrella with a single leg and an eye.
Extra: Yatsunagi said she wanted to draw a woman with a red umbrella but ended up making a guy after all.
Extra: Yatsunagi said that Scarletella knows the realworld language despite being born a monster, and that he possibly learns other languages trough reading minds and absorbing that knowledge. She also says that knowing a language and communicating are different, and that Scarletella only thinks for himself.
Extra: Scarletella is inspired by the idea of japanese urban legends (like Kuchisake-onna, Hanako-san, Hasshaku-sama, The red room, Gozu, Aka manto, etc).
Extra: Gap reffers to the ghost appartments as 'his world'. This is also taking place in what seems to be a dream sequence or an alternate location since Adami will either wake back with crawling or in another otherworld location, and not in the real world. So it's much more likely gap reffers strictly to the alternate plane of the Ghost appartments and the blood water domain as Scarlet's world and not the overall otherworld, since it continues to exist independently from Scarlet after he is defeated, and most characters don't seem to be aware of his existence at all.
Extra: In the videogame Ghostwire tokyo you can encounter a quest that will lead you to meet a variation of the Kuchisake-Onna that is completely red and in a red trenchcoat which is reminescent of Scarletella's design. There are also locations of infinite shallow water simmilar to the location you fight him in.
Silvair
Goal: research and study the unknown (primarily how realworld beings are affected by the otherworld)
Abilities: intelligence, medical knowledge on other species [unlike nurse], knowledge of explosives, physical strength [lifts a heavy weapon easily], regeneration
Silvair works as Adami's main source of information in the otherworld. His knowledge of everything including language as well as how to effectively teach things results in him being one of the better sources for finding words early game. While he's shown as curteous and polite, he also shows no remorse in brutalizing others for his own morbid curiosity or research. He treats others in reaction to what helps him moreso than out of kindness.
Extra: when prompted wether he likes Adami, Silvair responds with 'not understand like', this could point to the idea that Silvair doesn't feel or at least understand the feeling of liking/loving something/someone. His lack of empathy or compassion regarding brutalizing Chopped and Adami seems to reinforce this idea, as he's confused as to why Adami is angry at him breaking her body. Simmilar in how some humans cannot or struggle to feel empathy or love and will see relationships moreso as transactions, though that can be typically learned and worked on.
Extra: The cut hand seems to be another entity that Silvair brutalized, while it's first met with Chopped, it does not leave Silvair's home and is the one to lead you there, it also is not Chopped hand's since he notes it to be a different entity.
Extra: when questionned regarding his knowledge, Silvair responds that someone taught him. This could point to Silvair having been on at least good terms with a human wiht medical knowledge in the past. Or it could point to him being a human pre-game and having done medical studies in his past.
Chopped
Goal: to be in a safe environment (with safe people or in a safe place)
Abilities: none [he uh.. he can roll around if he tries real hard maybe?]
Chopped mainly works as one of Adami's friends, unlike other characters he stands out as needing to be protected instead of being a protector. His incredible vulnerability means he's often picked on in some way. He's usually shown with Silvair, though he also often seems to get lost on his own somehow.
Extra: Chopped enjoys being clean and put together, he seems to know the hairdresser on a basis simmilar to Silvair.
Extra: Chopped recovers not by eating human flesh but by sleeping (supported by his dialogue when leaving Silvair's apartment and how often he sleeps). Chopped dislikes being handled against his will, and his vulnerability at being essentially completely disabled makes him easy prey for other residents to pick on.
Extra: Chopped is implied to have been a human like Adami pre-main story. Silvair's treatment of us is reminescent of him and Chopped is amongst the most expressive and human-like of the cast.
Hood
Goal: to help Adami be safe
Abilities: strength [carries a heavy weapon], proficiency in executing ennemies, intelligence
Hood works as Adami's first proper introduction to the game and it's mechanics. He also works as some sort of passive protector to humans who enter the otherworld. Though he isn't interested in keeping them safe long term and would rather be on his own most of the time.
Extra: Hood allegedly has no head, but his body is.. squishy.. ish? He's seen handling weapons with a hand, so it's unclear what of his body exists and what does not.
Gap
Goal: to obtain various human body parts trough trade or request
Abilities: teleportation, manifesting trough any space so long as it is dark enough and is being observed [schrodinger's gap], free roam between worlds, intelligence, 4th wall breaking
Gap is the first real threat encountered by Adami. He also works as the main source of lore and progression of the main storyline. He also works to actively help Adami break free from Scarletella. Though this doesn't seem to be out of kindness but out of boredom, as if he has nothing better to do.
Extra: Gap says he has no reason for wanting body parts. Gap says he has no heart, or most things for that matter. He's only shown having hands/arms and a head/face.
Extra: though gap says he has no particular reason for wanting body parts, he only seems interested in human parts, and his specie presumedly eats flesh. Gap is never explicitly implied to eat the body parts he's given, though, and the idea that he lacks a heart could mean he lacks a digestive tract, like Chopped, and recovers energy in a different way, like him.
Extra: Gap is much more aggressive in chap 1/beta than he is in the rest of the game. This could be due to a light change in the writing of his character later down the line, as he's much more simplistic and actively hunts Adami trough gaps, while full release gap appears ever so often in holes Adami looks trough to poke fun, show off his collection or ask permission to take body parts.
Hugeface
Goal: to capture smaller living beings to use them as dolls/pets
Abilities: strength, size, ability to exist 'outside' the bounds of the otherworld [ in the void above/outside rooms]
Hugeface is a looming threat encountered troughout the otherworld. He treats any character smaller than him as some sort of pet, handling them clumsily and roughly like an infant would a new pet hamster. He also is implied to collect ones he finds cute as pets, placing them in little fake environments.
Extra: Hugeface is implied to exist in a space simmilar to what would be 'out of bounds' in a videogame, the space only seems to appear in rooms with missing walls, ceilings, or windows in some way. Such as the door in chap 1, the giant ravine in Machete's story, and in locations without ceilings.
Machete
Goal: to do whatever he wants with no one in his way
Abilities: strength, speed, fighting proficiency
Machete is an extremely aggressive entity, he will fight Adami unprovoked, though he seems much more interested in the actual fight than in killing or eating her. He thinks her and any who fail at defeating him as weaklings.
Extra: Machete's aggression might stem from him misinterpreting someone others do as someone trying to pick a fight. He's also overconfident in winning every fight, so he isn't afraid to fight, unlike Stitch who does not fight even when attacked directly.
Extra: Machete's skin and overall affliction could be similar to Adami's [red blotches on skin], this could also be dry and fresh blood stains though..
Telephone
Goal: to help Adami to avoid death
The telephone is an entity that will call any available phone to transfer information to Adami. This is usually advice on how to avoid upcoming monsters (scarletella, Hugeface) or navigate areas (maze), making it one of the few beings to actively be good, having no known of ulterior motive.
Extra: Telephone seems to be able to speak trough any sort of telephone, unclear where the line is drawn. (Would two cans and a string work??)
Stitch
Goal: to entertain himself
Abilities: intelligence (quick to learn how new things work, knowledgeable of a variety of things and locations including things from the real world, one of the few to recognize us as human)
Stitch acts as a mild antagonist due to his habit of forcefully showing Adami things he finds interesting or dragging her to places to amuse himself. When he has nothing to do, he mopes around depressingly until he comes across something new. He's upbeat and playful, not bad intentioned but he doesn't consider others much.
Extra: Even when threatened or attacked (Adami or Crawling), Stitch doesn't fight back.
Wheelchair
Goal: to heal from his injuries
Wheelchair is encountered twice, he's a rude, aggressive and demanding entity that will demand Adami fixes him. If Adami outright refuses to help him, he will kill her.
Extra: it's unclear what exactly he suffers from. He points to his eye being missing as well as his mouth being split. His skin appears to be corroding in some way, and he seems completely unable to use his legs to move. His affliction is not like Chopped or Adami's, and Silvair either has not met him or did not find him interesting or cooperative enough to care for him. It could be that his disease is unique in some way, or that it's incurable. It could also be that it's resulted from a fight, since his mouth was cut open, presumedly by someone else.
Masque
Goal: to entertain others
Abilities: teleportation [of himself and others/other objects]
Masque is a peaceful entity, he will appear and offer to show Adami a magic trick, either way leads to him leaving.
Extra: Masque is not aggressive even if you refuse to watch his magic tricks.
Human
Goal: to escape the otherworld
Human is a human met near the end of the game. He's scared of Adami, presumably because she's nearly fully a monster at that point, or because her own urban legend is circulating now. Or maybe it's the blood and crowbar. Either way he doesn't fully trust her, and he's nervous of her. He's killed off screen shortly after meeting Adami.
Extra: in the original Jpn version of the game, he's an english speaker, in the eng ver this is reversed to him speaking jpn while adami speaks english.
Extra: the only way of falling to the otherworld that we are shown is the elevator, or falling into it [backrooms style]. Ot could be that the Human fell out from another, english speaking country, or it could be that he was a foreigner in Japan when he fell.
Extra: Human speaks some otherworld, pointing to the idea that he was taught by some benevolent characters like Silvair or Hood pre-meeting Adami.
Adami Adashino
Goal: escape the other world/ break Scarletella's curse
Abilities: strenght, changing size (temporary), regeneration
Adami is a human japanese woman, while she appears as a more shy and ditsy amnesiac girl, it's revealed she's a murderer who had been dumping bodies at the ghost appartments, attracting Scarletella's attention
Extra: one of the symbols in Adami's name is the same used for 'monster', foreshadowing.
Extra: in Blissful love life end, Adami is shown to live alone, presumably without parents or family. She also does not mention missing her family or worrying about her friends and family looking for her. So it's unlikely she has any.
Extra: Adami Adashino is the 'default'/'canon' mc name, as it is the name already in the field you need to fill out when you remember your name.
Extra: Adami goes trough various appearance changes trough out the story:
She starts in a japanese sailor school uniform (hinting to the fact she was most likely a high school student) and had longer hair
This is changed to a white dress (given by bride),
Then her iconic white raincoat (given by bride).
Her hair is cut shorter and it turns white/grey by the end of the story. (Cut by gap, turns white from exposure to the other world)
Her face gets covered in bandages by nurse, her eyes presumably turn red at some point that is never specifically mentionned
General stuff
Extra: lots of characters are seen using their left hands (Silvair is often drawing holding his syringe+weapon in his left hand, but occasionally his right) (Crawling points to things with his left hand) (Scarlet holds his umbrella in his left hand) (Hood holds his weapon in his left hand as well as his right). This could be a continuity error in how they are drawn, or it could be that they're ambidextrous (it's more common for lefties to become ambidextrous). This is not the case for Gap though who is mostly shown using his right hand.
Extra: some characters are not able to recognize Adami as human (Chopped) , while others immediately do (Hood, Silvair).
Extra: Yatsunagi said the otherworld language comes from birth to monsters (not humans turned to monster)
If you have any corrections or thoughts feel free to comment them so i can fix anything accordingly, reblogs are harder to answer to

[Yōkai AU] Fiend & Menace
Made by Cat, aka Researcher Serif/AW
"I know I'm quite the catch but for you to look at me like that, you trying to tell me something, Master~? You don't need to look from so far, you're free see my true self as close and as often as you please~. Just know you aren't escaping me that easily~."
(The Kitsune no Mado, or "Fox Window", is a Japanese hand technique believed to reveal hidden Yōkai through your fingers as with above.
It's comparable to the Celtic hag-stone or adder stone, a stone found in riverbeds with a naturally formed hole which can reveal witches or faeries through it.)
─────────────────────
Sometimes, I really hate colors. I spent so long agonizing his color palette it ain't funny, I swear. At least I think I did better on colors this time. Not by much but decent enough... (lighting's hard)
Either wae, here's @cosmica-galaxy's Fiend and Menace! They're apart of my Yōkai AU, very much based/inspired on @twstedforyou's own original Yōkai Twisted Wonderland AU.
Below is some lore if you wanna know! I recommend reading up this post for further AU lore if you wish.
Do hope you enjoy either wae!
─────────────────────
For those who don't know what Yōkai are, "Yōkai are a class of supernatural entities and spirits in Japanese folklore."
They can range from your classic demon, in this case Oni, to objects gained spirit and sentience such as Kasa-Obake, a friendly and playful one eyed, one legged sentient umbrella.
So now that that's outta the way...
[Yōkai AU Lore]:
꧁ღ⊱ | Oni!Fiend |
Fiend is an Oni, a kind of yōkai, demon, orc, ogre, or troll in Japanese folklore. They're known to be big, terrifying and having great strength. They're also known for their violent and short temperaments with a hunger for humans and alcohol.
In this AU, since people are pretty much wiped out, skibidi's are the suitable replacement. While not as fun as human prey at times, there's something a bit more satisfying playing with them. (The answer is abundance and the fact no one cares about them. He can be as sadistic and cruel as long as he wants with his food, something he couldn't with humans to avoid getting caught with his pants down so to speak.)
Fiend is a young Oni, reflecting his canon self being a Gen 0 mimic born after the fall of humanity, but he's still quite older than a century at least.
Due to his experience and the fact that the Yōkai District is quite traditional, he's a bit different. A tad wiser and more eloquent in his words for one. Not that he chooses to be, preferring to be a bastard most times. He's still the tsundere little shit who gets turned on when you make the battlefield red with the blood of your enemies.
Due to his heritage, he's quite the alcoholic. Because of that, he's also quite a bit more aggressive with skibidis because there's just some types of alcohol exclusive to the human realm that isn't made or sold in his District.
In this AU, Yōkai can shift forms to disguise themselves as the most dominant species in the human realm via shapeshifting or illusions. For some more humanoid Yōkai like Yuuki-Onna, it shows in their true forms. The believability of a Yōkai's disguise vary between Yōkai and those with skills more inclined to disguise like Tanuki and Kitsune are better at it than most. Fiend has an unusual competence in the art for Oni, Yōkai known to be quite dog shit at their disguises, especially for one as young as him.
With his surprising competence in illusions and Menace being too young to create his own disguise, Fiend extends his own over Menace until he can learn for himself. It also means when his transformation goes, so does the tuggle's.
Before the War, Yōkai had the option of either human or mimic guises but considering mimics themselves mimicked humans, it was mostly human disguises. Now though, the option is either Alliance members or mimics who mimicked them. Fiend in particular chose the mimic option because it gave him more freedoms so to speak. Disguising himself as an Alliance member would've burden him with the role of acting like one which, as apart of a military operation, is a heavy one to play.
Fiend spent most of his time in the human realm. When the fall of humanity came, he was mostly wandering and hunting alone and only rarely going back into his District when bored. Despite the solitude of the empty cities, not even he knew why he stayed in the wasteland as a TV mimic as he did. At least, not until he met you.
In this AU, his meeting with you was much like his canon self. He decided you were interesting at first and pretty much stalked you. Though, he was much more… open, so to say, with his less than mortal nature. He didn't necessarily show off he was of an Other nature but he didn't necessarily bother with blending in too much. Humans are pretty much dead and gone and he only kept a thin veneer up for the Alliance to not get up all over his ass after all.
Let's just say it was quite a surprise when he confronted you for the first time and found out you were his beloved Master all along. (He did not let go for the next week, still closely shadowing you for the rest of the month after. Your presence— no, your existence is simply too much— too intoxicating— for him to simply ignore and leave be.)
Bonus! He'd never admit it but sometimes, he'd head over to his District and find baubles for you that he makes seem like they're old belongings he'd never touched and left to dust. He's always terribly smug when you like it and gloats it over the others with a smirk.
꧁ღ⊱ | Oni!Menace |
Menace is also an Oni, a very young one
He's pretty much canon Menace but more of a little shit with a nasty temper when really angry
Though, instead of the whole 'parents dying leaving bby orphaned', its more he was orphaned at birth
Unless a hybrid of sorts, Oni are traditionally born from the death of a horrible human's spirit which is why Oni, at their base nature, are cruel and violent. By using the dead spirit of a horrible human to bring them into existence, they're bound to take bits of the violent and cruel parts that make up said spirit. Luckily for Fiend and you, it's something that could be taught to be managed but anger is always something present that'll have to be managed for the rest of his life.
Despite being essentially a toddler, he still has the absurd strength Oni are known to have. He can easily carry you with no problem which is a bit troubling considering he likes get mischievous. Often with Byte at that...
He's also a a bit of a nipper considering human flesh is apart of the natural diet of Oni. He knows better than to harm, Spirits forbid consider you prey and eat you. Adopted Papa Fiend is hovering over his back with a critical eye after all.
Bonus! Menace, underestimating his own strength and your human constitution, had accidentally thrown you once. Luckily, it was at Fiend. Unluckily, it was at Fiend. Possessive shit extraordinaire. (Yōkai won't let any slight against their Master stand, kid or not. Someone boutta get their little ass cooked.)

Guys, hear me out on this. A Sofia the First... Gravity falls... au. Now, I don't have most of it down, but here are some characters I assigned to be in:
Cedric as Stanford (and by extension Cordelia as Stanley)
Greylock as Fiddleford
And please hear me out on this one
Obake as Bill Cipher.
Now, it would make sense to switch the roles for Cordelia and Cedric, but I'm not basing all the story points from GF into this au. Also, Cedric falling for Obake's compliments and tactics makes more sense.
Anyway, that's all I'm gonna say about it, and yes, Obake is going to be a shape. What else would he be?

Friday Night Fightin - BF Reference Sheet!
Been going back and forth of adding this silly guy into the rgbfverse and just decided "fuck it". I throw you Mikey, the angel singer combatant.
Friday Night Fightin GF Ref Sheet
Friday Night Fightin Pico Ref Sheet
Name: Mikey Angel
Nickname: Mic, Chihuahua
Birthday: 2nd April (so close)
Age: 25 (the midget's 25???)
Orientation: Panromantic asexual
Species: Angel creature thing
Height: 5'0 ft (SHORT AHH me who's 4'11)
Weight: 80 lbs (due to having anorexia) (body envy is scary)
Voice: Just normal BF chromatics but with statics here and there from vocal straining. Screams similar to Whitty.
Relationship Status: Dating
Family: Garrett Angel (father), Medana Anděl (mother, they have a picture frame of her with a small vase of flowers and had passed away early in his years)
Partner(s): Stacie Daemon (fightin!GF), Derrick Dino (fightin!Pico) (Stacie's boyfriend)
Friends: Neena Arachnes (fightin!Nene), Darnell Phoenix (fightin!Darnell), Skid Skelly and Pump Pumpkin (fightin!SkidandPump)
Acquaintances: John Dino (fightin!Tankman), Marco Daemon (fightin!DaddyDearest), Janice Daemon (fightin!MommyMearest)
Enemies/Rivals: Derrick Dino (they clash in playfighting a lot), Ayumu Obake (fightin!Senpai)
Personality: A hyperactive, and I mean HYPERACTIVE individual, even when alone. Constantly on his feet, he will never go a day without singing his lungs out or initiating a battle (purposeful and accidental), whether that's with his fists, rap skills or a silly game of rock paper scissors. If you beat him in Rock, Paper, Scissors he will instantly see ya as a homie. Although he's extremely positive in almost every situation, he's also heavily blunt with his words and says shit in front of his challenger's face to taunt them. He thinks and knows he's the shit when fighting someone, so he tends to come out very prideful or standoff-ish whenever he wins. Despite this, he takes his losses with high spirits, cheering for his challenger and hypes the both of them for a future battle. Despite dating GF and Pico in extension to her, he never cared much nor did he understand the concepts of romance, however he does deeply care for the two of them like he does with his parents, and thinks of the two as family and will show just as much affection. Oh, and people compared him to a chihuahua a lot. Despite his hyperactiveness, he cares a lot about boundaries and would usually talk a few feet away from someone (knowing how loud he is himself, people can hear him just fine). He can be mature when he needs to, but is extremely difficult to stay that way without immense fidgeting on his arm bands, halo and tail. He cannot sit still for his life.
Personality flaw: He rarely thinks before he acts, but whenever he does it's usually when a person he cares was in distress or from seeing his reflection. He's extremely stubborn to not acknowledge his eating disorder and body envy towards the people around him, and often gives the most ridiculous excuses when asked to eat something before running off (His partners do try to help him in that but it's a very slow process currently). He would comment of how ugly his figure is without thinking, which makes his friends and loved ones worry about him by accident. His hyperactive body also detriments him, being extremely fidgety and no matter how much energy he used up through the day he would still be too restless to sleep and ends up sleep deprived the next day, which is why it is one of the main reasons he thinks that food was a problem, despite having nothing but water half the time. He has been trying to calm his hyperactivity down by participating in slow hobbies but no luck so far.
Likes: Rock music, specifically heavy metal and alternative rock, singing, battles, rock paper scissors, winning, his family, his homies, playing guitar, side hugs, high energy activities, running in the rain, words of affirmation.
Dislikes: Food, flavoured drinks (he would vomit due to tasting like fruit), coffee (used to be a coffee addict when he was younger, now despises it with every fiber of his being), being reminded of his body and weight, thunder (unexpected loud booms spikes his hyperactivity).
Powers: Mic whip and stand melee (basic combo attacks), Mic stand sweep and dash (heavy combo attacks), Wing jump (uses his wings to jump high and fly in the air), Arrow soundwaves (screams into his mic tail to create a piercing soundwave at a certain direction), Mic ground pound (bashes his mic to the ground to create a shockwave around him when dashing down), Telekinesis (only uses it on his mic stand and other small items), Guitar manifest (His mic stand shapeshifts into an electric guitar and shreds the arena stage with a sick tune, knocking back enemies and does small continuous damage), Teleportation (Uses his halo to open a portal, he cannot jump through AUs with it).
Backstory:
Being honest I'm not good at setting the mood so I'll give a summary. Mic's world doesn't have any 'humans', instead people are born a fantastical creature that a family believes in the most, whether it's loosely based from their personality, culture or a hereditary trait in the family. Along those lines of main creatures (angel, ghost, demon, etc) will also have subcategories of what type of that creature you will be (archangel, wraith, imp, etc). These are based purely on who you are as a person unlike the main category. Their world revolves around fighting, seeing it as a competitive and even fun sport, betting on which creature is stronger than the other.
Mic's mom passed away really early in his life, which made his often laxed dad a bit reclusive towards others and could get protective of his only son. Somewhere down the line Garrett became a workaholic and needed multiple downs of coffee to get by to complete his papers while struggling to also be an attentive father to Mikey.
Going to middle school, Mic had gotten attached to the stimulant drink, following his dad's footsteps of drinking coffee day in and day out and soon became an addict. Even with his current ADHD, the caffeine still helped him in being proactive throughout his life, maybe a little too active. He participated in combat fights during PE and sports festivals his school will hold. By the time he started high school, he was known as a battle maniac due to his hyperactive nature and becoming infamous for it almost instantly. That was when he met Stacie, who was dating Derrick at the time. That was also when his hatred for coffee and the start of his eating disorder. He was still going about his day as usual, only difference was the lack of eating time and an excessive amount outdoors, participating in more battles and downright wacky situations with Stacie and Derrick.
Current time would be similar to the original game EXCEPT IT'S ALL FIGHT ROUNDS HELL YEAAAA.
Additional notes:
You can add different piercings and face accessories on him if ya like.
His other eye is there, it's just under his halo.
The scars are optional since they're only battle scars
His wire tail can extend pretty far hehe
I actually don't listen to heavy metal WHEEZE

alright babes here’s the wip
tumblr better not kill the image quality on this thing working on it gave me scoliosis fr
so, what’s baymax worried about?
not revealing, *however*, in the movie, when they’re in fred’s mansion, baymax reveals his findings after scanning callaghan
on his screen, if you look *very* close, it lists three medical diagnoses
1) high risk of cardiovascular disease
2) acute stress disorder
3) high emotional instability
cant believe disney gave us that vital, albeit, angsty information yet never used it.
again, not spoiling the comic, but do with this information what you will.
ALSO, we truthfully have no idea why SFIT combusted, we know that Hiro thinks it’s callaghan, but I highly doubt he would endanger literally innocent students, most being his who he’s grown to adore as his own, if he had daggers for Alistair only.
I do think it was an attack on the student body, but I wonder which past student has a venom towards SFIT and its faculty and students? Obake perhaps?

"You are far too nice, mercy has a price...
unlike you, I HAVE NO MERCY LEFT TO GIVE."
THIS IS JUST AN OLD FIC W.I.P.
.......
Trina messed up. She wasn't supposed to get attached. She wasn't supposed to care. She wasn't supposed to make friends... But she did. And she kinda liked it.
Then father found out. At first he was proud that she seemingly gained the young genius' trust. Even more so when she also befriended both the Chief of Police and Professor Sato's daughters.
So many useful connections, useful pawns for his plans. What a brilliant outcome. Two possible proteges and a strong bargaining chip if the police try to interfere with his plans.
He didn't think too much about how much time Trina was spending with these children. Or how many times she accept their invitations to lunches, dinners or game nights. Why would he? After all, it's one thing to gain someone's trust, it's another if you make yourself seem reliable and strengthen that trust to ensure that you would never even be considered a suspect of suspicion or doubt.
So, he allowed it. Obake saw her actions as a means to an end. None of it mattered. At least...that's what it started out as.
He molded Trina into exactly what he wanted, no, expected. A completely obedient, loyal, intelligent and diligent daughter (acolyte). She owed him her life, everything she was, everything she is. Is because of him. Because he allowed it. How could she not be grateful?
He was brilliant, a genius, limited only by a world full of limitations. Limitations created by those who are incapable of vision or ambition. Those who try to make excuses due to the "Danger" or "Mortality".
And yet... it's these very same people that allow a broken system to continue, even though it's been proven to be faulty. How many people have to suffered? From small crime like, shoplifters or purse thieves that were just given a slap on the wrist and then a week or a day later, they're back on the streets doing the same thing unless they want to aim higher. Or what about the bigger criminals? The ones that go under the radar. The gangs that have entire cities in their pockets, from the cops to the politicians, like The Double Jade Clan and Big Yama here in San Fransokyo.
People that are so adamant that things like "law and order" keep us safe and yet law hasn't always aligned with what is right.
Segregation was legal, the Jim Crow laws were legal, slaves and indentured servitude were legal and the Japanese internment camps during WWll were legal.
This entire system is broken way beyond repair and the only thing left to do is to start again. Cleanse the sin from world in order to save it.
No, not save. Improve.
A better world. That's what father always said.
He'll make a better world. A world where the guilty won't walk free, the politicians won't be safe from consequences due to their deep pockets or connections... A world where there are no underground criminal organizations, a world where genius can run free from the chains of limitations and "morality", a world that harnesses the power of a star instead of slowly killing the planet.
A world where the Double Jade Clan will never kill another family, leaving a sad orphaned girl with nothing but a thirst for vengeance justice.
"It's okay. We'll show them."
"We will show them all."
He found her. He took her in when he didn't have to, didn't need to...and yet he did it all the same.
He taught her everything she knows, he helped her understand how to be clever, guided her hands when she didn't grasp mechanical engineering at first, trained her in the art of adaptation in order to become almost chameleon-like in any situation.
At first she didn't understand his grand plan, his life's work, when told her in the beginning. She thought it was scary, it was dangerous, it was wrong. Like a plan that a bad guy would have in comic books. She was wrong. She was young, susceptible to what the world wanted us to believe is right and wrong. He helped her understand that she was just corrupted by a system that wanted to keep people away from the truth. To make people weak and force them to never be able to truly thrive.
The illusion of freedom.
And yet...
After all these years, after everything that he's done for Trina, she can't help but feel a tinge of doubt creeping into the dark corners of her mind sometimes.
She never really left her father's lab too often, unless absolutely necessary, like to retrieve something for a device, keep an eye on Yama so he doesn't step out of line, and most recently, creating a diversion to keep the police (and now these self proclaimed "heroes") busy while Obake can do what he needs to without outside interference.
She knew that Obake wanted some help. To have a protege to take under his wing and to help him usher in his utopia of progress and freedom.
Trina after the first few years of living with him she thought that maybe it could be her. She could help him just as he helped her. But, this was just the folly of a then 9 year old child, because, yet again she was wrong. While she may have been smart, especially with Obake teaching her as much as he could of robotics and engineering.
He just didn't have the time. He was busy working towards a better tomorrow that there was only so much time he could devote to her existence. He cared of course, she knew that, but she also knew that he wasn't thrilled that she wasn't grasping everything as quickly as he would've liked. So, she stopped following him around like a second shadow and started studying and learning as much as she could about mechanical engineering, then robotics and chemical engineering. Though try as she might, she just came up short.
She understood that she was smart, she definitely wasn't average intelligence by any means, in fact she's sure that she could have gained admission to any college she wanted with the arsenal of knowledge she was equipped with. It's just... Not enough. Not for him. Not for utopia.
She's intelligent, she's clever, but not genius. Trina just isn't what he needs. It wounded her pride, but she could understand that sad fact(even if didn't like it). He never told her this outright, but he didn't have too. She could read the signs. So she did what she always did.
Find a different perspective, a different angle and she realized that she was exactly what he needed. Just not in the way she wanted originally.
She could befriend his prospective proteges, while also making sure that they're what he needs. She already knew their names, where they spent their time, one of them even was apart of a vigilante group.
Hiro Hamada
Mary Sato
They were teenagers just like her. They didn't know each other but if she could befriend them both and then get them to meet the other... Then they would become friends and make things easier for father.
She would gain their trust and then when the time's right she would get them to understand her father's dream, then they would of course, understand and help to make it a reality.
Sure, an entire city would be destroyed, but hasn't it already been broken and stained with the wrongs that we allow to exist? Why should it stay like this? Big Hero 6 wouldn't even need to exist if this world and it rules actually worked.
The world can't go on like this! It can't. Someone has to do something. It may seem wrong, but sometimes there's a base level of violence that is necessary for change.
Every war ever fought all had casualties that were all simultaneously necessary and needless. Necessary in the sense that humans have to be shown the worst things imaginable in order to actually understand that they are in the wrong. No one will change their mind when they believe they are right, not until they see the consequences of their actions right in front of them.
And Needless due to the same reasoning. The inability to admit or to see the obvious. No hindsight. Just sit and talk. But noooo. Everything must be done the hard way.
Like always.
Like now.
Trina always thought of the people in this city as a means to an end. Numbers on a screen to be calculated and plugged into the advanced equations that Obake would work on to get his calculations right. But... now she's confronted with the doubt that has been creeping into her mind like a bottle of syrup that got knocked over on a table and is slowly but surely covering the area. You could try and wipe it off but it's sticky nauseating sweetness will not be easy to get rid of.
Trina thought that she was right, that father was right, but... she can't see numbers on a screen anymore. She can't see a city that is scheduled for a long overdue demolition. She sees faces, people, families that live here. She even recognized the strange/sweet old blind lady, Joan, who feeds the birds at the park on Sundays, on one of surveillance cameras in the lair.
This wasn't supposed to happen.
When did this happen? When did she begin to doubt the one who gave her everything she had? The one who made her who she was?
When did it start?
Was it when she was at Good Luck Alley trying to keep Hiro from discovering her sending not only the police, but him and his team on a wild goose chase?
Was it when he caught her? And she immediately turned the situation in her favor by explaining that she never stole anything (other than the police's time and attention) and that she was using Kohakutou that was meant to trick the authorities. Weaving a story of half truths and making herself seemingly the victim. Pinning the blame on Yama ( Obake saw no use for him anymore anyway), and gaining not only sympathy but guilt from Hiro who felt terrible for assuming the worst in her (He was on the right track).
After all, he didn't know her very well.
Was it when she was invited to hang out at the arcade with him?
Playing round after round of Robot Monsters VI: Lost Galaxy?
Listening to Megan complaining about the unreasonable amount of homework she got assigned?
Watching as Megan came to life when she was investigating a case behind her father's back?
Listening to hiro vent about a bully he has deal with seeing at school?
Karmi, she later learned her name and made sure she would keep her distance from Hiro after an incident that left Trina banned from the campus (but totally worth it).
Joining Mary and her father, Professor Makoto Sato, for one of their family game nights?
Failing at Roller skating, but laughing anyway with Mary on girl's night out?!
When did it happen? When did their friendship start fill an emptiness that she never knew she had inside?
When did the thought of anything bad happening to Hiro, Mary or Megan begin to fill her with anger and annoyance?
Why wouldn't it stop?
Why did she suddenly care so much about them?!
Why does she not want this feeling to end?
' I want to stay like this forever. '
Oh.
Oh, no.
What happens now?
'What do I do?!'

Happy Halloween!! This year I bring a Monster High Crossover <3
don't forget your daily click here are my art permissions buy me a ko-fi commission me!!
More information on why they are the monster they are/ additional design choices:
Yoshiki: Luna Moth Monster
I chose this specific species of moth for Yoshiki because of two reasons: Hikaru's name contains the symbol光 (忌堂光) - "hikari" in romaji, meaning light - making the possible translation of HGSN "The Summer The Light Died", which i'm taking to interpret Yoshiki's 'light' in his life being snuffed out. Moths go towards the light - they orient themselves using light, much like Yoshiki's life orients around 'Hikaru'. The second reason is that Luna Moths have the spiritual symbolism of "New Beginnings", and Yoshiki and 'Hikaru's' relationship is a new beginning for the both of them, whether Yoshiki likes it or not. I also took some inspiration from the "death's head moth" - which often symbolise a strong connection to the spirit world... and also "death's head"... a skull, that I added in the design
'Hikaru': Kasa-Obake
An Obake is a thing that changes. A shapeshifting creature, but can also mean a ghost of a deceased human being. The symbolism here is obvious lol.

More BH6
So what prompted this originally was a member of the Straggler’s Club doing a contest for hero outfits for other characters aside from the team, and I decided to take this as an opportunity to do Tadashi and Obake’s outfits in the Live and Learn series. Look now, these will likely be the last things I ever do for that group—wish it was more fun, but the founder turned it into their personal therapy session and if I’m getting roped into that then I better dangsight be getting paid for it.
*ahem* Moving on, did up Tadashi’s outfit first because the closest I’ve gotten to nailing it down was a sketch for his outfit in The Aken/Hamada Collective series, and that version’s a little edgier because he’s got more of a chip on his shoulder in that AU. Orange was always a given color for him since that’s the color missing from the team’s lineup, while the rest of it’s mostly inspired by baseball players and samurai. Also wanted a sunnier look compared to my initial TA/HC design that sort of paired up with Honey Lemon’s, while at the same time taking Hiro’s magnetized design since in this AU Tadashi’s the one riding around on Baymax. Tadashi’s particular weaponry also ends up being somewhere between Wasabi’s and Obake’s in Obake Itoko, where he has the electric sword and shield to go with the magnets. As for the gloves and tinted visor, that’s something that Obake insisted on across the board, he is not going to jail because he’s stuck working with idiots.
Also figured I’d do Obake’s outfit as well, since it ends up being a little different and souped-up compared to how it appears in Obake Itoko. As it is, I also ended up consolidating some design aspects across a couple different iterations, which also requires showing a little more detail to the back since I hadn’t shown that angle yet. And, unlike in Obake Itoko, Obake is the one who designed this and therefore it has more edge. Saying that, the only bits he started out with is the virus touch, the Buzz-Lightyear-style hacking tools in the arm armor, and the Robotnik gloves from the first Sonic movie; everything else were ideas the Hamada brothers had and decided to test on him, in order being the Doc Ock arms, the jetpacks (we’re getting the Mad Jacks in the sequel, boys), and the Shadow the Hedgehog shoes, which were mostly from me being totally stoked for the third Sonic movie just a few more months—and you can see in the corner the sketches for the shoes...done from memory. I drew a lot of Sonic the Hedgehog stuff when I was little. Saying all that, Obake tolerates all this because he prefers dealing with things from a distance and this enables that, although he has added some extras to the armor. And yes he’s insisting on the tinted visor and gloves for the whole team he is not going to jail because of them—although it’s not quite enough to hide the SK in his face when he gets peeved.
So! The sequel is currently sitting at 453 pages, 45 consecutive chapters, and 188K+ words—we’re three pages and 6K off from surpassing the original with ten episodes left to address, not counting the ‘bridge events’ I want to address with fleshing out season 2 some more. We’re getting closer....
find them on eclipse here, as always please be kind and reblog, not repost, thank you! :D

I feel like BH6 the Series could have REALLY handled Karmi better than they did.
They could’ve given her a MUCH more interesting backstory, if she was there the year before (which she would have HAD to be if being the youngest at SFIT was originally her thing) she could have had a very interesting relationship with Tadashi and Callaghan where Callaghan (the dean of students as well as a professor, much like Granville) was much more interested in Baymax than in her work. And it’s not even like Granville because she has the excuse that she’s paying more attention to Hiro because he’s 14 and at college, Callaghan was picking a 20 year old Tadashi over a 15 year old Karmi just bc he’s a robotics student.
And now that Granville’s here, she’s ALSO paying attention to the robotics (and other non-bio) majors over her. Which, as a viewer, is understandable bc Granville herself is more aligned with robotics and tech than biology, but that still doesn’t give her any right to just ignore the other literal child just because she’s a biotech major and she isn’t going to accidentally blow the whole lab up. Granville just dumped Hiro onto Karmi hoping they’d get along, thinking she was unaware of the blatant favoritism going on, hoping Hiro would just adopt her into the nerd gang and make things easier. Granville was completely aware of Karmi’s utter lack of friends and connection from both her peers and any authority figures, and still decided that she didn’t deserve a mentor as much as Hiro did. Which yeah, the bio department should have paid attention to Karmi, but can the fucking dean of students pay attention to more than one genius child at a time? The answer is yes, Granville is fully capable of mentoring more than one student to be functional and ethical people who won’t blow up labs, fight each other, make killer pathogens, or make energy amplifiers.
Meanwhile, Granville didn’t know that the catalyst behind that entire friend group coming together was Tadashi, but Karmi knows this fact very well. She doesn’t want to be with the dead golden boy’s friends and she doesn’t want to be with the new golden boy either. The nerd gang probably wouldn’t want to hang out with Karmi either because she was probably standoffish towards Tadashi too. Or at least, she didn’t acknowledge him if he tried to welcome her into his group. Honey Lemon is probably the only person she would willingly hang out with and talk to (I don’t think anyone can resist her good vibes), Granville should’ve sent her rather than Hiro. Sending Hiro was like rubbing it into her face that she’s not the youngest anymore when it was all she had going for her, even thought Granville didn’t mean that.
Like, they had something good going there with the initial rivalry. Karmi blaming Hiro for Granville favoring him because he’s almost exactly like her old protégé is absolutely understandable. Karmi didn’t know any of Granville’s backstory and probably just thought it was because he’s younger and a robotics major, not because of the whole ‘being very similar to Obake’ thing. But that shit should have been resolved in Season 1. More specifically, in S1 episode 19. She should have had an epiphany in S1 ep 17 that “yeah, Hiro’s not an asshole, Granville and Callaghan had a problem with favoritism of robotics students over everyone else and I should just be fucking mature about it and take it up with Granville instead of picking fights with a 14-year-old over something he has no part in.” They did NOT need to stretch that into S2.
Karmi didn’t deserve to be the series’ punching bag, and she doesn’t deserve to be the fandom’s punching bag either. She’s 16 and at SFIT, she’s just a kid herself, give her a damn break. Of course she’s not going to be emotionally mature about authority figures she deeply respects constantly picking other people over her just bc of their major. She’s 16, of course she’s going to have crushes and write shitty fanfiction, what else do teenagers do?
She’s not some irredeemable bitch, she’s 16 and got fucked over by everyone, the characters, the show, and the fandom.
look at her. she deserved so much better.

-Obake: “Well done. Come my child. We have lots business to do.”
-Bonnie: “Yes, papa…”
I’m not sure if I’m going to rant a lot in here to explain what’s going on but I’ll just let use ur own imagination.
The art style may be different from my first art style it just I want to draw something different to see if I’m comfortable this art style. That’s it, I’ll come back again! QwQ
EDIT: This is Bonnie backstory, this is when she was 9-10 y.o as you see the paper at the bottom.
Obake wants Bonnie to be stronger and prepared the real world and testing her how strong can she be, so she can use her telekinesis power for hurting others that hurt/killed peoples, that’s just a step, Bonnie doesn’t want to hurt people and she’s think people should have second chances but Obake disagrees with her and people shouldn’t have a second chances, they should be dead for good and also manipulative her reasons she have the power to hurt people not saving people (lives). Unfortunately, Bonnie did believe him what he said.
So this picture it just an another step, Bonnie step is killing “victims” or you can say killing the killers. Bonnie didn’t want to fight the young killer so she tell them let’s chat for awhile then we can fight, which the young killer hesitated cuz they didn’t know if she planning something but eventually they did as they chat Bonnie would ask questions to them but the young killer gets annoyed by her questions so he decided to end her conversation, as the killer gets ready to kill her, Bonnie apologizes to them and twisted their neck. As you see a nosebleed, Bonnie isn’t used it her powers so the blood would come out often. Obake was proud of her and tells her their other things she’s needs to practice more.
That’s the end, I hoping the future I can draw them and show it to you about their daughter and father bonding :’> I might’ve make the story kinda dark… (LMAOOO, y I draw the person so goofy dead?!😭💀rip…)

What if mononoke are not all that the trigram exorcism swords are assigned to combat, let alone slay?
Lore spoilers beneath the cut.
Let's examine this excerpt in the lore doc :
その中でも特別に強力な力を与えられた「剣」が八本あり、これは異界からの「肖え者(あえもの)」の侵略 に対抗するための力を特別強く与えられた「剣」たちです。 Among them, there are eight "swords" that have been given especially strong powers to counter the invasion of "evil people" from another world.
It says pretty explicitly that the 8 trigram swords are exclusively responsible for countering evil beings called aemono (あえもの) originating from the yikai (異界)- an alien world. Note that they distinctly used the term aemono (あえもの) where they could just as easily said mononoke (モノノ怪) to prevent confusion.
Does that mean mononoke fall under the umbrella term (hehe, Karakasa puns) of aemono? Do they exist amongst a pantheon of other entities that are either stronger and weaker than it?
They also use the word kosuru (抗する) - counter - instead of kiru (キル) - kill - to describe what's being done to these malignant aemono. This has the genuinely concerning implication that sometimes, even these cream-of-the-crop, elite trigram-class exorcism swords are not powerful enough to outright exterminate an aemono.
I am beginning to think that the movie title "Mononoke Karakasa" may be a misnomer. The Karakasa, which I've theorized to be more powerful than the average mononoke in these two posts seen (here) and (here), might not fall into the mononoke subcategory. Heck, come to think of it, may might not even fall in the aemono category.
If @sarahwatchesthings's theory about it giving birth to mononoke is correct, the Karakasa in its most powerful form may be a straight-up portal to the yikai (異界)- an alien world.
As a side note - what do the remaining 56 exorcism swords do, if they aren't responsible for fighting the aemono? Do they just do the grunt work of exorcising lesser beings such as yokai, obake, and ayakashi?

Making a Sideblog that is sorta like an rp blog that is about the Disney TVA villains living (or at the very least visiting) underneath one roof. I think I'm going to make it a resort because the mansion is an overuse crossover trope, and there was already a hotel of other Disney villains (that being the movie counterpart), so I'm sticking with the resort because I think some of the villains need a break, and so does their heroes. Also, by Disney TVA, I meant all 3 channels (Channel, XD, and Junior) being near each other. I hope I made myself clear with that. Also also, there would also be redeemed villains joining in as well because they are still counted as villains in some cases. This was definitely not implemented, so Cedric can be involved. What kind of fool do you take me for, haha?
Now, the first round of villains would be my favorite villains and the villains that I know the most:
Bill Cipher
Obake (Big Hero 6 the series)
Cedric the Sorcerer
King Andrias
Emperor Belos
I'll add more when I think about more or if people ask me to put them in.
Anyway, I just wanted to announce that. See ya on the blog (it's in the works right now).

Social, Cultural, & Political Things to Help Understand Buddy Daddies - Part 2
Hey there, everyone! Since my first post covering topics like these went over so well, and since I found a few more things I can talk about in these first four episodes that involve a social, cultural, and/or political aspect of Japan, I decided to make a second post.
I type these posts up on my desktop, since that is easier, but after posting, I will go back on mobile and edit in ALT text for the photos. This post is also likely to be very lengthy and image heavy, but I hope you all enjoy the information provided. Also, if anyone has any extra insights, please feel free to share that information. I love learning, and always am learning, so any corrections or further info is always appreciated.
We are going to be starting off with a few simple, quick, and “easy” topics, so to speak. Now, let’s get started!
1. Rock - Paper - Scissors
In Ep.3, we see Kazuki and Rei decide who will go and purchase the sweet potato for Miri. In order to decide this, they use Rock-Paper-Scissors. In Japan, the game is called janken and is used in classrooms to decde everything: which row or group in class will go first? Janken. There is a tie, who will win the game? Janken. A student or students are out of class today so there is some extra food left over, who will get it? Janken.
In many cases, this will be use to decide orders as well (like the winner goes first or last and then it goes in ascending or descending order from there). And it won’t just be between two people, they’ll do huge groups. When I worked as an ALT, I would often just trust my students or the JTE (Japanese Teacher of English) or Homeroom Teacher to figure out who won and lost, because I would always lose track... ^ ^;
Anyway, this way of deciding things is viewed as unbiased and a sort of “third-party” decision maker. A nice way to have a decision made without ruffling any feathers. And, we sometimes see using Rock-Paper-Scissors to decide things within the workplace and business world.
Some examples of this are provided on the website Japan Daily, which will be linked below. The website does lean a bit into Orentialism, imo, but it also has some good history and info on Rock-Paper-Scissors in Japan and these real life examples of it being used in a business/work environment are great:
2. Baked Sweet Potato - Street Food
Baked sweet potato is a very common street food in Japan in the fall and winter months. They are cheap, smell delicious, are delicious, and are a great way to warm up cold hands. Nowadays, many are sold out of small, white vans like the one shown in Buddy Daddies.
(Image from Asahi Imports).
They are usually eaten plain and the inside tends to be a light, off-set white. Like ice cream trucks, the sweet potato vendors will usually set up shop around playgrounds, school areas, parks, etc. basically any place where a large crowd is likely, and they will usually shout out that they have sweet potatoes. In a similar way to the vendors walking around selling food, drinks, and peanuts at a baseball game or something.
You can read more about this winter time snack over at Asahi Imports, which will be linked below (they also make mention of daigaku imo, which is a dish you’ll see in Japanese school lunches in the fall and winter months, and which is very yummy!).
3. Obake - Ghosts
I was watching a reaction video to episode 3 of Buddy Daddies, and the reactor was like, “Isn’t she afraid of ghosts?” And, well, that made me think of a very popular song and book in Japan called おばけなんてないさ (Obake Nante Nai sa). It is a very famous children’s song and (later) picture book in Japan. The song was first broadcast on an NHK program called “Minna no Uta” in 1966. This info is from the website Hello Project Lyrics Wiki, and will be linked in the comments below.
When I worked at a Japanese cram school back here in the States, we had a bunch of copies of the books, and all the teachers had the book and song memorized. All the parents were familiar with it too, and it was taught in the youngest class, since the book and song is for the 0 - 2 year old age range.
Here is a Youtube video with the book and the song being sung to it. Warning: This song WILL get stuck in your head. The beat is very simple and easy to remember, so you’ll definitely end up humming it, even if you don’t know the lyrics.
youtube
I’ll link to English lyrics that I found for this song in the comments. But the general gist is that there is no such things as ghosts, they aren’t real, but if they were, I (a child) would be afraid of them. So the song goes on to tell of how you can befriend a ghost instead, and not be afraid of them anymore.
Miri is 4 years old, and can write her name, speak and understand well, and has good coordination skills. So there has been some level of education, so she has likely heard this song before. And therefore probably isn’t afraid of ghosts on a more conceptual level, though she still equates them with “bad guys,” lol. If she hasn’t learned it or heard it yet, she probably will now that she is in daycare.
There are four more issues/aspects that I plan on discussing, so I’ll put those under a Read More due to length and them being slightly less lighthearted.
4. Animal Rights
When I watched reaction videos to the first episode, many people were upset at the cat being returned to the box (and the cat even just being in a box to begin with). I was too, of course, but I also knew where this scene was coming from. For this section, I will be citing the article: Challenging, inadequate animal welfare in Japan, which I will link to below. Though, I also came across the article Why You Shouldn’t Buy a Pet in Japan, which I will also be linking below, since I think it is worth the read.
Basically, Japan has laws in place, and they get revised every 5 or so years, however, they are very vague and the general public knowledge of animal rights is farther behind than in other industrialized nations. In the other article that I will be linking below, they mention that about 90% of pets in Japan are bought through pet stores, rather than through adoptions or rescues. So, as the other article states, abandonment of pets is rather high, especially because of how trend-based pet ownership is in Japan.
Things like pet cafes can really influence pet trends. I’ve been to two myself, an Owl Cafe in Osaka and a Hedgehog Cafe in Tokyo.
That was a number of years ago now. And while those experiences were AMAZING! I do think about the ethics of it all and think, if I were to return to Japan some day for a visit, those kinds of cafes wouldn’t be on my To Do list.
However, there are groups and organizations to help fight for animal rights in Japan. Since this section of the post was inspired by the scene with the cat in the box, I’ll highlight the cat based one mentioned in the article:
So that’s good to hear!
5. Parenting Style
Another thing I noticed during reaction videos were the responses to scenes like the above, where Miri is kicking at the back of Rei’s car seat and whining, “I wanna go swing!” As well as to scenes like below, where Miri caused all of Kazuki’s food supplies and materials to spill all over the ground.
All of them have made mentioned that moments like those require strict discipline. But, Japanese parenting style differs a bit when it comes to things like this. In an article entitled: Japanese Parenting Style - And Differences From the West, which will be linked to below, we get this bit on discipline:
Basically, it is saying that Japan isn’t really big on punishment because Japanese children learn to behave by learning the importance of cooperation and harmony through other social groups like school and sports. This is definitely true. What I’ve seen is that the expectation is that the children still don’t fully understand the ins-and-outs of society yet.
I worked at a Japanese daycare, so our job was to take a gentle parenting approach, to help explain to the child why what they did was hurtful or harmful or dangerous. And one of our goals was to help the children learn how to play amicably with each other.
That’s not to say that I haven’t seen children be yelled at or anything like that. I have. But it is usually the teachers that take on that mantel, especially at the junior high school level. That’s when you get stuff like students have to practice bowing during an assembly over and over and over again until they get it just right, especially if that assembly is a rehearsal for an important event, like graduation ceremonies.
Bringing this back to Miri though. Now that she is in daycare, she will start to receive this gentle parenting approach to learning how to co-exist with others, which will eventually result in more positive behaviors (or, that is the ultimate goal, anyway). Miss Anna will likely provide a lot of that guidance as the head daycare teacher.
6. Snack Bars
Miri’s mother works at a Snack Bar and, over on the official website, it states that her job is as both the Mama and singer at the Snack Bar and that she is 34 years old. But what is a Snack Bar and what is a Mama?
Snack Bars were started in 1964 to work around government laws that prevented adult entertainment establishments from staying open after midnight, by offering light snacks, that changed the category that they fell under, thus they could stay open. The Mama of the Snack Bar is basically the one in charge of the Snack Bar.
They are similar in ways to Hostess Bars, but on the cheaper side. You can read about more of the details about how they run and what not at the website Metropolis Japan, which I will link to in the comments.
Another thing about Snack Bars is that, while they don’t sell sex, they sell the fantasy and illusion of sex:
They are also a outdated nowadays (with their peak being back in the 80s), so there is a general seedy vibe about them. It may seem like an okay place to take kids from the name alone, but they are very much so adult-only spaces. Also, as we saw with Miri’s mother, likely a place and setting where the exploitation of women happens.
7. Casinos and Gambling in Japan
We saw Kazuki do some gambling in Ep. 1. Something you may have noticed, however, was who lured him in:
And what the outside of the establishment looked like:
Two young and sexy women and a bright, sparkling pink building named “FAIRY LIPS.” You probably guessed that this isn’t a legal gambling establishment. Casinos and gambling are still largely illegal in Japan, with some exceptions like lottery. The ones that are illegal are likely being run by Yakuza.
However, some changes have gone into affect in more recent years, especially as a way to attract tourists.
Over on the Wikipedia page about Gambling in Japan (which will be linked below in the comments), it talks about how Japanese lawmakers approved a bill in July 2018 that officially allows casinos in the country. However, they come with a lot of restrictions, such as Japanese locals only being able to visit them three times per week or ten times a month, and Japanese visitors will be charged 6,000 yen entrance fees to discourage addiction.
And...that’s it for this post! Thank you all for reading this far and for all the love and support you’ve all shown to my previous post (and other meta posts I’ve made). I really and truly appreciate it! I’ll be keeping an eye out for topics like these in future episodes. Though, those posts should be a lot shorter, since I’ll be going on an episode-by-episode basis, instead of in bulk like this.
Until next time!
