i'd like to see more of the theme of "family" in overwatch. we see it a lot with ana & fareeha, ram & zen, brig/torb/rein/bastion, genji & hanzo. but those are the obvious ones between playable characters. the ones that are much more clearly written on the wall, even once-in-a-blue-moon players could pick up on. much else is hardly focused on despite how much family (or a lack thereof) has shaped many of the character's lives & identities for better or for worse

i don't like how martina & the unnamed reyes kid are only mentioned in passing, despite gabriel himself visiting often unannounced. clearly they were an important part of his life. clearly, family is an important part of his life — i'm very willing to wager that small passage about the death of his parents in declassified was written very intentionally. his complicated relationship with death, and how it was further affected by his own "death," & how he's now in some warped reversed position with his new family. but we don't get much more than a few voice lines about martina (is she even mentioned by name in-game orrr am i not remembering?)

i want to see how ashe manages the gang throughout the second omnic crisis. or perhaps we could see her mannerisms slightly change with bob. maybe instead of standing side-by-side with him as she is in the reunion cinematic, she puts herself more between him & potential unrealised threats. or maybe she subtly tries to nudge him under awnings whenever she spots ufos, weary they're housing subjugators — little things that are very intentional. maybe her demeanor tilts ever so slightly from confident but guarded, to guarded but confident.

i want to get a better picture of the role sam english played in fareeha's life just from playing the game, especially after ana's presumed death. i want to know more about their relationship other than the christmas dinner they had. i wonder how many players just assume fareeha's father died young, or assume the writers didn't care to write one at all? for a long time, i thought the former. i wonder what sam thinks of some of fareeha's closest friends — has he met cole & angela? what does he think of helix? we hardly even see fareeha's native heritage expressed other than the two skins off the top of my head

what about cassidy & echo? i know this is a more implied one, but cassidy was the first one to nurture her "childlike intelligence." even today, he guides her — he encouraged her to help winston&co at paris when he was still on the fence. one of the cutest things for me is her enthusiastically shouting "hello winston!" mid-battle, presumably not long after cassidy told her to say hi. she probably would've either way, but i also don't want to discredit the role cassidy has had on her development & i really do want to see more of them

or, speak of the devil, how winston views everyone at overwatch as family. how in watchpoint: gibraltar's 1st defense spawn, you can see the little beds he set up for lena and mei, how you can read an email as proof he got the blankets from a small kids blanket business. the way he keeps photos of the gang, years later. how vehemently protective he was of all their locations. i wish we could see it reciprocated a little more, i wish we could see individual sleeping areas for other heroes as the story progresses, or more items on his desk. & that's not even getting into hammond

& i don't think i can have a family post without mentioning dad 76 or how i desperately want to see benicio being the best supportive dad for lúcio more but honestly i'm getting pretty sleepy so either i'll add more later or someone can add more.

depending how you stretch the definition of family here, it can include other dynamics too. baptiste finding a new sense of belonging in the new overwatch, or mei braving the antarctic to not let her team's death go in vain & to help people who can still be helped — from jiayi and her team still on mars, to the people who now need her help on earth. i'd also argue hana's squad in korea. what are niran's siblings up to? are we gonna see more of efi & orisa? moreover, how are all these non-playable side character characters handling the invasion? i guess we got some texts between lena and emily

family is such a powerful motivator, but can also be really complicated, as seen with the amaris and shimadas + kiriko, i wish we got a similar amount of investment some other places too

a major theme of overwatch is moving towards the future, progressing in some way. & that looks different for everyone depending on their emotional readiness to do that, and what they view "progression" as. so it makes sense a lot of characters don't look back on those they lost along the way so much, at least not too openly (zarya comes to mind), but that's what can make their present relationships with others that much more worth preserving & seeing

probably an impossible ask of a game feeling the effects of layoffs that's primarily focused on pvp/bp/shop items but ykn

Lena pulled her sleek coat a little tighter around herself as she stepped out of her black car and into the bustling street as a sharp chill ran down her spine. She’d already started to notice the telltale signs she was starting to come down with something earlier in the week and truthfully Lena knew she probably should’ve slowed down a little to rest but not only had she been thoroughly swamped with work, her excitement for today’s date with Kara had kept her going.

She muffled a raspy cough into her elbow as she navigated down the streets toward

the cosy secluded restaurant where she and Kara had planned to meet. But Lena's steps were slower than usual, and she couldn't shake the feeling of fatigue settling in. Yet as she entered the warm ambiance of the restaurant and spotted Kara sitting at a corner table, she was helpless to fight back the bright smile forming on her face.

Kara looked up from the menu and her eyes immediately softened at the sight of Lena approaching the table, "Hi darling," she greeted her warmly but concern flickered across in her gaze when she noticed the unnaturally crimson flush sitting on Lena’s cheeks. "You okay?"

Lena managed a small nod, attempting to push through the weariness. "A little under the weather. I’m okay, don’t worry.” She stammered as Kara stood up to pull out her chair, thanking her kindly, “Just a little peaky.”

Truthfully Lena surprised herself a little with her own honesty but Kara always had a way of making her feel so safe in her presence that she couldn’t help but give in.

Kara’s infamous crinkle formed in her brow as she pouted a little, “We could’ve cancelled, I would’ve understood!” She exclaimed, a little too loudly causing some to glance over in their direction, “Look, I just don’t want you forcing yourself to be here if you’re not up to it. We can get dinner at a later time whenever you’re feeling better.”

“No, no. Please,” Lena began, “I want to be here Kara, I’ve been looking forward to seeing you all week, please.” She mirrored Kara’s same pout and the blonde was helpless to do anything except cave in. After-all, how could she deny that face?

Throughout their dinner the poor Luthor looked as if she was fighting to stay awake. Despite wanting to seem aware and engaged, her eyes keep dropping closed, as her dizzy head continually bobbed forwards.

Luckily their meal didn’t take long to arrive and the two delved into their food, Kara excitedly shoving the large pizza she’d order in her mouth. But as they shared their food, a little itch at the back of her sinuses caught Lena’s attention. She tried to ignore it, wanting to keep focused on their conversation. The CEO subtly rubbed her finger beneath her nose in an attempt to chase the tickle away, but ultimately she had no such luck. It only seemed to make things worse and she barely reached for a napkin in time to muffle a series of sneezes into it, her face blushing with embarrassment as she excused herself with a quiet apology.

“Bless you, hey, I think we should get you home, you look exhausted darling.” Kara purred as she sipped the last of her wine before placing her hand over Lena’s, gently using her thumb to rub small circles over her skin, “We could go back to my apartment if you’d like? I can take care of you a little.” She offered sweetly.

“But I dont- You dont- Look, you and I, we’re not even official yet.” Lena almost whispered, “I don’t want you to be put off by this.” She gestured to herself before muffling a cough into her napkin.

“Being ill, being taken care of. It’s not something I’m used.” She admitted, her eyes cast down to the table hiding from Kara’s sympathetic gaze.

But the Kryptonian only shook her head in reply, raising her hand to gently tilt Lena’s chin up so that the two locked eyes once again, “It’s okay, don’t worry. We can stop buying the store on the way home, pick you up some things that’ll help.” She smiled, taking the same hand and outstretching it to hold Lena’s, “It’ll be okay darling. We’ll figure this out together.”

I know Alex is trying to push this noodle arms spindly Sam agenda but I literally can't picture him like that, in fact I'm headcanoning that when Alice calls him noodle arms/waif/baby shrimp it's because he's lost weight since uni but he's still fat, all very round shapes on the go here

Also he has big dark brown eyes like a calf with ridiculously long lashes

The thought of him activates some kind of grandmaternal instinct in me, I need to pinch his cheeks and give him a Werther's original (I am 22)

I love love LOVE @fox-guardian 's design for him (for everyone, actually, especially Tim), it's exactly what I imagined listening to that first ep, down to the wee moustache and everything

I've decided that, to go along with her general insecurity, she's also really insecure about her appearance

Wore a headband to work once and immediately binned it because Alice flirted made a joke about school uniform and Gwen got self-conscious.

Cassidy explained who Baptiste was, and divulged the state of Hanzo’s injuries—and if their faces growing pale wasn’t enough, the whole room itself seemed to shudder from the chill. 

LIFT (chapter 5 - unraveling)

The ORCA was as silent as a grave. It felt too awkward to try and make light of anything, not that Cassidy was trying to; no, he took Angela’s advice and shut his damn mouth. Lena seemed the most distressed by this dour turn in mood, but she couldn’t seem to find the words to inspire in any of them to some semblance of cheer. She resigned herself to the cockpit and the doors to the pilot’s chamber slid shut with a kind of somber finality that only bittersweet cowboy songs could bring. It only took a minute or two, then they were lifting off.

WRECK (chapter 14 - forgiveness)

Fareeha sat dejectedly at the kitchen table. Her eyes stared forward, not really focusing on anything, and her usually trim bob was a wreck as though she’d raked her hand through it several times already.

FINAL (chapter 4 - snakes and barbs)

“Ya think we should be worried about that?” Cassidy quipped, feigning nonchalance, and he walked past Reinhardt to pick up the final sentry and place it near the throne itself. Reinhardt glanced upward at the ceiling, then shook his head. “It is a conversation not meant for our ears, so I will hope that they work it out.” Cassidy snorted. Work it out? Them? He was sure Reinhardt knew the situation and was trying to be optimistic. The reality as far as he was aware was: if Hanzo got too bold he’d take him out— Genji’s opinion he damned.

PITCH (chapter 5 - unraveling)

The pitch darkness that swallowed the hallowed halls of the Watchpoint weren’t doing anything for his eyes and he wasn’t keen on using Deadeye just to walk around at night.

GAME (chapter 16 - clarity)

And so what if he had a slight infatuation. The man was a wet dream on legs, if you could overlook his personality (not that Cassidy truly was these days but that was a different conversation he wasn’t quite ready to have with himself yet, not so early in the game, and never mind what he said to Genji which was barely anything at all, only the passing insinuation that Genji could interpret however he liked—)

CHAIR (chapter 19 - hanzo's ladder)

Unable to help it, Cassidy whipped his head to the side of him, the speed washing a wave of nausea over his body like a thunderclap. Lo and behold, Hanzo fucking Shimada was tied up to a sad little plastic chair, just as he was. It seemed he either hadn’t crawled out of the tides of the drug like Cassidy had yet—or like Cassidy, he was keeping to himself and assessing their situation. At least Cassidy hoped.

BENEATH (chapter 7 - spirit)

“It’s nice to meet you!” She said brightly. She held out her hand to him and Hanzo looked at it as though it were a bug, or something wholly beneath him, something that might kill him if he interacted with it. He didn’t take her hand, just nodded at it curtly.

Hellooo my friend! 😊 I have spent a little less time in the god-chosen side of The Pacific than I have in BoB, but I have certainly had some thoughts about it here and there.

(Sidenote for new followers: the main AU can be found here and the tag for it on my blog is here. There is also a sideslip collection that features works other people have written in this verse, which is still a huge honor for me! It's an AU that's kept growing over the years, and I'm always open to writing more for it here and there.)

I really like how in depth we go into the minds of all three of the protagonists. It’s a level you don’t really get with BoB (not that that’s BoB’s fault since the point of that show is to show the camaraderie and less on the individual experience), and I just love seeing how each character grows and gets changed by everything. I would read such long character studies on Eugene, Leckie, and Basilone please rec me some if you have any

14. Do you have a favorite The Pacific episode? Which one and why?

ALL OF THEM. no genuinely help me I can’t pick I’m just gonna go with the one I’ve been thinking the most about lately which is ep 8 Iwo Jima. First time I watched it, I was like ???? We just went through hell with Eugene and now we’re doing a little romance back in stateside??? But after my rewatch, I fell completely in love with the episode. It wraps Basilone’s character arc perfectly and his romance with Lena is just the best. They’re two individuals who’ve only been viewed by who they are on the surface, but with each other, they truly see each other. And I will never find it not tragic how it’s their love for the marines that brought them together and made each other understand and connect with the other yet it’s this same love that tore them apart. Also the whiplash from the honeymoon to Iwo Jima, and then John dying then the cut to Lena by the sea? Makes me cry every time

Sam and Ruth! I need their back story, stat. They're both so freaking cute in a pillars of the establishment way 😅. They're both coming to the start of the series with problematic viewpoints and yet both end up really moving with the people rather than protocol. Plus, you know, Ruth as stand-in mum for Alex in New Eden and Sam is Carly's dad. Cute little blended family thing going on there for sure. Side note though if anyone tries to make them romantic I will cut you.

Also fun to note when I was thinking on this one I realised I'm super fond of the bond Layton and Ruth eventually develop ❤️❤️❤️

💚 a ship that you think deserves more love

Obviously canon ships do get a lot of love but looking at the figures on Ao3, Brakenight is trailing behind (albeit some of those fics are looooong. Looking at you, @train-pirate). It's the ship that brought me to Snowpiercer fic in the first place and there'll always be a special place in my heart for canon sapphics. Plus you know, Lena Hall 😍

THE OG MYSTERY INC from SDMI. It would have been really interesting to see more background on Ricky & Cassidy & Brad & Judy & Professor Pericles. There’s so many interesting dynamics between the core group, especially concerning how everything fell apart. The way they came together only to fall apart later on has so many details that never got fully explored but would have been legit fascinating to see!!! I was also always curious about how the five of them connected to Fred Jones Sr./what that dynamic was like. :)

For totally platonic relationships: I love Crystal & Amber from Alien Invaders, Penelope Bailey and her dad from WNSD’s Recipe for Disaster, and for some reason the dynamics of the band from Simple Plan and the Invisible Man is cute to me. The relationships between the fathers and daughters in Ghoul School also always really warmed my heart (esp The Mummy & Tanis 🥰).

THE HEX GIRLS!! they really deserve the chance to be developed further and I would die and kill for a piece of media that’d get to explore their relationships with each other further.

Surprisingly, I was also pretty touched by Muttley and Dick Dastardly’s bestie-ship in Scoob!

When Lena came out of the Time, and remained in the isolation chamber, she was entirely nonverbal at first. There was nothing functionally wrong with her, she was in stable physical form (not great, but stable at least), and she had the ability to speak. However, due to the trauma and stress of what she had experience, she was rendered nonspeaking.

The Chronal Isolation chamber is an air-tight, round chamber anchored in Time itself, rather than the Overwatch timeline. Lena and the chamber are vibrating at the same frequency, whereas the base is vibrating at a different frequency, which is what makes the chamber a successful transition point. At least Winston and the others are able to see where she is, even if she's separated from them. Regardless. There is no way into the isolation chamber, except for a single, 3x3 vacuum sealed locking double chamber window. It's pressurized, and acts as the only access point for the chamber. This is where Winston delivers food, games, books, blankets and nesting materials, and anything else Lena asks for.

Lena's communication was very limited during this time. For the first three weeks she was back, there was an absolute lockdown on the lab. Only Angela was given access to drop off the occasional meal, and to try to win Lena's trust. Winston was deemed too unknown for such a task. Her mental state was nearing the snapping point, if it hadn't already. She would spent hours in one spot, not moving or talking, and refused to eat when anyone was in the room or watching (except for the cameras, of course). As time went on, she grew curious enough to explore the chamber somewhat, looking out the windows at the base and the ocean that felt so painfully familiar, but like it was from a dream, or another lifetime. I'll get more into the processing time between then and getting out of the chamber, but for now I want to focus on her language.

With Lena being nonverbal, it was hard to scope anything from her. There were visual bruises, new scars, wild eyes, her hair was different and she was leaner, but none of that told anyone what had happened to her. They tried many forms of alternative communication, but Lena didn't really take to any of them. She would end up leaving the holotab designed to help her communicate in the corner and ignore people when they tried to get her attention. She would communicate somewhat with Winston, mostly through nodding and shaking her head, and shoulder shrugs, but everyone else went almost entirely ignored.

Eventually, that shrugging shoulders and nodding evolved. Without even realizing it, the two had created a pidgin of nonverbal communication, a certain language of sign language nobody else understood. It wasn't fluent, and things were misconstrued at times, but she was finally communicating beyond head bobs. Winston was the only one who she was willing to consistently communicate with in this fashion, but others would be looped in at times. Lena refused to use it with most of the doctors, having a very poor perspective of them by now. However, friends and people she considered close do get that privilege of direct communication after some growth.

Even after she starts speaking again, Lena will either sign with her speech, or switch to entirely sign when verbal communication is too much while still in the iso chamber.

It's also important to know that this pidgin is sourced very little from real BSL or ASL. Winston suggested some signs, like 'hurt', 'bathroom' and others, but the grammar and rules of sign language are not regarded here. It's a quick-and-dirty form of communication, and thusly she is useless when sign language is required in the field.

Lena also comes up with gestures for different people that operate as nonverbal names.

Chapter 5: Fuck The Cape

“I can’t do it!" I cried out as the waves tossed against me. The sun was still high in the sky, blinding slivers of light reflecting off of the moving water and shining into my eyes as I desperately tried to stay above water.

The boat only a few movements away bobbed on the surface, groaning with each shift of the waves. "You either sink or swim, Lena." The voice was soft and nurturing, but the words were anything but. "And Glovers don't sink."

Water crashed over my head, forcing me beneath the surface for a moment before I managed to push myself back to the top. I freedom sucked in as much air as I could, wide eyes looking at the half-shaded figure lounging on the boat. "Mom please!"

With a sigh, she shook her head as she stood. "Sink or swim."

The roar of the engine ripped along the surface of the water as the boat eased further and further away from me, back toward the shore. My heavy breaths did little the warm the cold that settled in my limbs as they moved, struggling to keep me afloat. With hot tears blurring my vision I forced myself to swim forward.

Salty. Sweet. Bitter. The water hit my tongue each time my heavy limbs splashed above the water. Each time it was a different taste, a different sensation that filled my brain with a moment of distraction. The taste, however potent, did little to help keep me from sinking as the fatigue finally set in. My eyes burned each time I forced my head to breach the surface, taking in as many sharp breaths of the frozen air as I could before sinking deeper and deeper into the ever-darkening water.

Sink or swim.

With one last push of my arms, I forced myself above the water and fumbled for the ledge of the buoy. My frozen fingers curled around the even colder surface as I tugged myself closer to the bright red material. It swayed with the waves, chaotic and violent but I held on. The sunset over the sparkling horizon and as night fell I could only wait and pray she would come back for me soon.

While Scotland's Fourteen years superstar was on ITV, BBC 2 had a programme about America's Fifteen year old superstar - Jodie Foster.

𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝐭𝐡 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝟏𝟗𝟕𝟖. London Weekend Television sent out publicity Photographs to promote The Lena & Bonnie Show. They also mentioned that they would be on Our Show to promote it. Lena’s rabbit was called Clyde, Bonnie also held one which I think was called Bonnie. Lena and Bonnie were photographed at Kent House Studios rehearsing for their Easter show, by Chris Moorhouse for The Press Association.
