I love Spell Thief as an ability so much for a bunch of reasons but mainly because it is a very fun way to show a characther morality depending on how the act with it. My go to example with my favorite rogues is:

Sasha Rackett would not steal spells from her friends without permition. She would proudly steal them from her enimies or from annoying allies (early Wilde) but not from friends because she values them and is a good person even if she doesn't realize it. But also because Sasha knows that trust is important. Being betrayed is what makes one go to jail or die, she worked with different people before and she knows that having someone (Brock!) watching your back makes a lot of difference.

Howard Carter would steal from his friends but only basic spels. More a joke than something that can cause harm, at most he would steal strong speels outside of combat situations to show off. Carter does also lowkey has the one advantage thar from the time Wilde can't do magic, he can steal the knowledge from Wilde and do the spell. So it becames a convenient combo. Yes, after the cufs get out he might onde or twice forget that stealing Wilde spells actually is a problem but never maliciously. He is more keen to steal from usefull alies than Sasha because for him is more about caring for the person or not. Howard at first cares little for people protecting his back and later has Varnes doing it.

Astarion would fully steal Gale spells all the time if he could. It is at most a 3 times per rest and that is the only reason he is not just stealing all of Gale spells all the time. My man would read arcana books just so he could be better at stealing from his friends. Loyalty my ass. "Soo, darling, are you looking for your spell still" is on. If he gets less "fuck you steals your spell" or only when it won't actually endanger an ally fully depends on how the journey goes. Also, yes, Astarion is stealing from all the tadfools, but he is specially stealing from Gale. Mostly because he likes how freaked out Gale gets when he forgets a spell for a minute.

P.S: Ron Stampler would only steal Henry spells and only so he could talk to dogs. In fact Ron would mostly steal very specific weird spells cause he is more about hidding than stealing and is a baby. Late to the rogue party, Taylor Swift, would only steal anime looking spells and only in moments that made anime sense. Make of that what you want.
