Alphaville: une étrange aventure de Lemmy Caution (Alphaville: A Strange Adventure of Lemmy Caution
The film was shot in 1965 Paris, featuring a new wave/science fiction, neo-noir aesthetic. The film focus' on real locations based in Paris, and avoids using special props or futuristic sets. The film explores modernism within the architectural landscape of the city, to depict a futuristic perspective.
The high contrast, black and white stills are of great inspiration to me and my practice. The intricate landscape created by the city is perfectly captured within this film; Different textures, highlights/shadows and shapes created by the cityscape create a deeply attractive and striking film that resonate with my own practice.

GAETANO DONIZETTI'S DON PASQUALE AT LA SCALA, MAY 31, 2024
Pretty much everybody knows it is not possible to step into the same river twice. But if I think of the two iterations of this specific Don Pasquale I’ve come upon—its first appearance in 2018, and this very revival—I’m tempted to say, well, maybe there might be exceptions… Just kidding—I’d never disrespect Greek philosophy that much. I’m also aware that there are tangible differences: most notably, the conductor (Riccardo Chailly then, Evelino Pidò now) and the entire cast (apart from Ambrogio Maestri in the title role). Still, my experiences felt remarkably similar; If you feel like browsing back until you find my previous report, that’s essentially it. (You’ll also get a fascinating frame from Alphaville, une étrange aventure de Lemmy Caution [1965] as a bonus). If you don’t, then I’ll give you a quasi-exact replica right now. I mean, sort of, almost quasi-exact replica: it’ll be as quick as possible. Davide Livermore’s production of Don Pasquale was a tale of two… flavors? Let’s make it a two-flavor gelato—I guess it won’t hurt to sweeten things a little bit. The first flavor was the incessant pursuit of elementary, easy laughs.
The second flavor consisted in a series of visual references to the golden age of Cinecittà. Those b/w situations were rather perplexing; if there was an organic, unifying plan coordinating them all, and pointing to some particular idea/theme (other than providing us with a reminder that Don Pasquale is set in Rome), I’d say it did sneak past me like a thief in the night. The orchestra conducted by Evelino Pidò seemed to match the staging quite nicely, but that coherence resulted in a somewhat sketchy, lightweight version of Don Pasquale, with many ups and downs. Two passages stood out as remarkable highlights: the arresting Largo «È rimasto là impietrato» (sung by Norina, Ernesto, Don Pasquale, and Malatesta in the middle of the Act II Finale) and the equally hypnotic, plus red-hot Duet «Tornami a dir che m’ami» (Act III; a genuine showcase for Andrea Carroll and Lawrence Brownlee’s flair for poignant tunes). As for the down part of those ups and downs, I’ll go with the famed monologue «Povero Ernesto!… Cercherò lontana terra» (beginning of Act II), whose massive solo trumpet introduction didn’t appear to wholly realize its gloomy, tortuous potential. Now what about an actual gelato? Anyone interested?
