Chapter 4: In which Katara takes us on a tour of Egypt's most famous river

Oh no. No, no, no. This is not good. Zuko is not allowed to be sexy. "...I can barely keep my hands to myself right now. You know exactly how much I want to stop being nice and noble and selfless." His voice is weird and raspy, it's not supposed to sound thick and rich like warm honey. This whole thing he's doing? Telling her what she already knows like he can read her mind, turning her own words back on her? It's unacceptable. "And now, I know you want that too," the smug bastard says, and then smirks at her. Smirks. As if that's some brilliant deduction. As if he just delivered a winning argument in favor of Katara opening her robes and letting him put those big stupid hands on her feverish skin and pull her restless body tight to his stupid muscled chest so she can press her nose into the source of that obnoxiously rich scent. He smells like the manliest, most self-satisfied autumn bonfire ever lit, and it's not as persuasive as he thinks it is.

ATLA x Omegaverse AU

I've been thinking about an omegaverse atla au a lot recently, so I'm gonna vent about it cuz it's getting tiring just to have it spiralling in my head ngl

So, the only thing that I need to mention now it's that the standard age at which someone presents is around 13 to 14 years old. Knowing that, lets talk about the main characters.

Aang (12) would be unpresented by the time of the show. Also, I don't believe that being the avatar makes him an alpha perse. I mean, there's a possibility he presents as one (but he could also be a beta), and it wouldn't have anything to do with his avatar status (historically there could be a higher rate of avatars being alphas/betas, but there are some important exceptions... iykwim). Well, I think he'd present at age 13 almost 14.

Katara (14) is one of the characters that confuses me the most in this aspect, but just to add fuel to her fury and her personality, I'll make her an omega, not the kind that rejects her nature but the kind that embraces it and doesn't see it as something that makes her inferior or helpless. Katara would fight against the life society wants to impose on her in the same way she does in canon, maybe even more. She would resent the people who doesn't respect her because of her gender and at some point, she'd get frustrated about it, but she would think that hating herself would mean letting her oppressors win. About her presentation, there's two option: 1. She presented some months before they found Aang, 2. She presented during the first months they were traveling to the NWT (in this case, I think the ideal place would've been Kyoshi Island, because there's people able to take care of her there).

Sokka (15) would be an alpha, he probably presented after Hakoda left (14), he fits the type and the stereotypical personality at the beginning of the show. But I think he would get over it sooner rather than later, because the why he acts has to do more with his perception of himself and the expectations set upon his shoulders than with unshakeable beliefs about the ability of betas and omegas. He would learnt to respect and don't underestimate them quickly. Also, I think that Sokka would scent the Gaang to protect them and particularly to cover Katara's scent as they travel or run away from trouble.

Toph (12) would be unpresented by the time of the show. She'd present as an alpha some time after the end of the war (13). There's not a lot to explain here (talking about her at that age, except for the fact that even during her time with the Gaang, she probably hated Sokka's essence, just as an early hint about her gender). I consider that there's a lot to discuss about her as an adult and how she managed her relationships, but that's a discussion for another time.

Zuko (16) would be an omega, and also a late bloomer, probably presented a couple of years after his banishment (15).. Zuko would be determined to hide his true nature under any circumstances, letting only his Uncle know about it. Ozai would've been informed that his son is a beta, which was already a disappointment for the Royal Family (historically alphas), but it wasn't nearly as negative as being reduced to be treated as an omega. Zuko would end up causing himself a lot of damage in order to disguise as a beta, either by using too many suppressants or other medications, or even hurting himself. He would stop hiding after joining the Gaang but It'll be complicated, since he'd be distressed all the time and even Aang and Toph would be able to notice (their senses are not totally develop, so it'll be kinda alarming).

Suki (15) would be a beta, presented at 14. In her case, the characteristics of its gender would be especially helpful to mediate conflict or get out of it. The scent of a beta has calming effects in both alphas and omegas, so she would use it with her friends, or even in battle, to make her opponents lose focus, particularly if they are driven by rage. The fans are particularly helpful for that.

Azula (14) would present early as an alpha (12/13). At that age, one of the traits she would manifest the most is assuming the position of head of the pact with her friends, she'd probably scent them with the intention of establishing superiority and control over them. In this context, Mai would be a beta and Ty Lee an omega or a beta as well.

In an almost canon universe where the only difference is that it is omegaverse, Pat is an omega, and Pran is an alpha. And during one of his heats, Pat is at home, and decides to ask Pran for a shirt with his scent to help with his heat. But instead, he asks Pran for help in other ways. Fic where the porn IS the plot, everything is super consensual, and sexy and hot. Alternating POV, so on Pran’s pov we get to see all the pining.

February - 

If Never Again, If Every Day by gallifreyburning and takiki16 (The Old Guard)

This fic was wonderful from beginning to end. For reasons, 2021 Nicky goes back in time to Jerusalem and his first death at Yusuf's hands. Meanwhile, 1099 Nicolò goes forward in time to 2021 and meets Joe. It's heartbreaking and loving and funny and so full of love. Nicky and Joe miss each other even when around their younger versions. But the love they feel for each other is stronger than that. Wonderful story, happy ending.

March - 

Wooing the Water Tribe by lenaballena (ATLA) @dameferre

Sokka has been living in the Fire Nation as Zuko's second in power and his best friend and everything. When Katara comes to visit, Sokka thinks Zuku is courting her. And he realizes he is also in love with his best friend. Lots of pining. There's absolutely no courting of Katara. It's also really funny. My heart broke for Sokka at some moments.

April - 

The Grand Unified Theory of Shen Qingqiu by 00janeblonde (SVSSS)

WIP - This story is all fluff and no angst, like the tags say, slice of life and it's wonderful. SQQ dies at Maigu Ridge, and is offered to acquire the Game Plus, where he can go back to the past with his cultivation and memory intact, and try again. Doing that he discovers that he is actually the real Shen Jiu reincarnated, and he can try to recover memory markers to be able to restart the "game" even before than when he first "transmigrated". His friendship with YQY becomes strong, LQG also becomes his friend (it's really sweet how he wants his friends back). Everything is very soft. Absolutely great teacher SQQ.

May - 

but for me, there is a storm by Authoress (Haikyuu!!) by @kiribakus

An epic pacific rim au. Hinata and Kageyama are both cadets who want to be Jaeger pilots, but they cannot get along. So they work really hard because they are their last hope to pilot a one of a kind Jaeger - a Kaiju/Machine hybrid. They solve their problems in the beginning (and then later they have more problems). Hinata and Kageyama are not the only main characters, other characters are also very important and have their own storyline and pov. This story is heartbreaking as well. There's MCD, and it made me cry so hard I got puffy eyes. It's a wonderful read, and very well written.

June - 

The UA Analyst Kid by RogueVector (BNHA)

Izuku meets the UA teachers before getting OFA and they see how good his analysis is, so they start to train him (together with some other heroes). But some things don't change and Izuku still meets All Might and gets offered OFA. This story is funny, sweet and with amazing relationships. Izuku is OP with his intelligence and training. All the teachers and heroes are so supportive and good. A really feel good story.

July - 

Deku? I think he’s some pro… by Clouds (BNHA)

After All Might told Izuku he can't be a hero, he finds himself in a forum used by some underground heroes and offers his analysis to them, since he can't be a hero, he will help them. The underground heroes think Izuku is some kind of retired pro when they ask for help analyzing some villains and all, and when they finally meet face-to-face they all decide to practically adopt Izuku and teach him to fight so he will have a chance to be a quirkless hero. It is amazing! Also, the relationship between Izuku and the underground heroes is more like friends than teacher-student, and it's amazing that way. (some All Might bashing - be warned)

August - 

Mobius by Foxquills (BNHA) @fox-quills

WIP - I love this story so much!!! Third-year Izuku is sent to the past because of a quirk accident, to the time both Shouta and Hizashi are third year students at UA. Problem is, according to Nedzu, time is constant, or a loop, so he can’t change anything in the past, and everything that has happened, will happen again. He becomes fast friends with both Shouta and Hizashi, and starts crushing on them as well. Both Hizashi and Shouta also start crushing on him. It is lovely. There’s pain. It’s awesome. (also omegaverse).

September - 

Factory Settings by Anonymous (Good Omens)

Post season 2 au, because Crowley follows Aziraphale to heaven. Things happen, and instead of Crowley, there is Raphael, without any memory of all the time he's lived as Crowley. Heaven and Hell are at it again. Aziraphale has no idea what to do, and he misses his Crowley. Muriel is a sweetheart. Both Aziraphale and Crowley/Raphael povs. Great story, feels very much canon.

October - 

Justice in Defiance by Foxquills (BNHA) @fox-quills

WIP - Aizawa is a hero turned villain who kills both heroes and villains alike. And one day Izuku finds him right after he kills someone. They fight. And now Izuku needs to know more. What made Aizawa turn????? To do that, he will also need Hizashi in his corner. Absolutely lovely story!!!! The povs are amazing. The feelings and pining are perfect.

November - 

If I Must Starve (Let it be in Your Arms) by Igneum807 (The Witcher)

So think about the softest story involving Jaskier and touch-starved witchers, and this is the result. During his travels alone, when he and Geralt go their different ways for a few weeks, Jaskier meets Geralt's brothers, who are just as touch and companionship-starved as Geralt was before meeting Jaskier. It's super soft and tender.

December - 

Cultivate: Slow Life on a Monster-Infested Mountain by NeonGhostCat (SVSSS) @neonghostcat

When SY transmigrates, the System tries to put him on SQQ's body, but SQQ is aware and is able to stop it from happening. The System then gives SY his own body, but something goes wrong with the system and SY is decided to not get involved with the plot, or with Cang Qiong Sect, and specially SQQ. He finds an abandoned mountain, with an abandoned house there and decides to stay there until he is strong enough if SQQ finds him and wants to kill him. Obviously things cannot be that simple. Now he is stuck on the mountain he can't get out of, every full moon night there are monster attacks and one day LQG appears on the Mountain, how can he get out of helping with the plot now? Shen Yuan is absolutely perfect on this fic. I love how he deals with the mountain and its beasts and plant-life. Liushen is the softest you'll see. Slow burn, super domestic, feel good story.

Always The Exception

A ficlet featuring beta!Azula being a little insecure about omega!Katara actually wanting her. All my A/B/O are fully @the-genius-az's fault (hope you enjoy it, I promise this not a tragedy.

Growing up, Azula has learned that being an omega doesn't make you inherently weak, look at Ozai. Being an alpha doesn't make you inherently strong, look at Ursa. Being a beta doesn't make you anyone's favorite, look at Zhao.

Zuko and Azula are just the exceptions.

Zuko isn't weak, she never believed. She always thought he should put more effort in his bending, in his studies. He had the potential. Not being a prodigy never meant he couldn't become one of the most powerful, skilled Firebenders of his generation. But he would whine about anything that Azula was ever slightly better than him, and go cry on Mother's arms, and Mother kept giving him space to become actually weak.

The firstborn alpha son constantly upstaged by the secondborn beta daughter.

Azula grew up doing everything she could to be valuable, a need that carved its way into her very bones. Carved with claws made of fire handled by Ozai, by Ursa and by everything in the Royal Family culture.

Now, twelve years after the end of the war, Azula can feel that insecurity burning under her skin. Because she's a beta among alphas and omegas, a better bender and a better fighter, there's the underlying convention that betas don't belong so high up in society.

It doesn't quite matter for them, they tell her. They make sure she knows she belongs – as a person, not a weapon the way Ozai did.

She's not sure what is going on between her and Katara. The omega waterbender had broken up with Aang, with the Avatar, with the most wanted alpha in the world, and has been getting closer and closer to her. They kissed a few times, but Azula is used to that, to being an experiment. She's not even bitter about it, betas don't mate.

"You're being very clingy," Azula comments, because Katara is, sitting on her lap with face on Azula's neck.

"You smell so good."

"I smell-" the extra sweetness finally hits. "Are you in heat?"

"Not yet."

"I'm sure you know I do not possess the needed equipment."

"Needed equipment," she repeats with a giggle. "I just want you to be here, just cuddle and hold me."

"I'm just a be-"

"No," Katara moves back, pupils blown wide but still sober. "You're the strongest bender I know, you're loyal and fierce and brave. And you're beautiful too. You're just great. Why wouldn't I want to be with you?"

"You want to be with me?"

"'Zula, I've been trying to court you for a year."

"What?"

"For a genius, you're so oblivious."

"I'm just a beta, you're surrounded by suitable alphas."

"You're Azula, that means a lot more than you think it does. Now just hold me, we'll figure the rest later, if you want to."

Honestly the weird thing is is that my og post barely even mentioned Sokka and it never implied Zukka, since I'm kinda lukewarm on the ship lol. It's just so weird that unless Zuko fits into their strict view of him, he's weak and gnc (which is apparently bad lol).

Like damn, bitch, maybe I just don't think we should assign strict familial roles to these teenagers and children lol.

Also what if Katara gets Zuko pregnant what then Zutaras, huh? What then?

I normally dislike a/b/o stuff (mostly because of how it’s usually an au for purely sexual reasons) but to be completely honest my brain has been stuck thinking about a/b/o in ATLA, to the point I’ve made around five plus google documents about it, three being unpublished and rushed fics plus two being rambles. My mind focuses on the weirdest of things. Anyways, since I can’t stop thinking about it, I just wanted to put it down here so that my mind hopefully starts being so focused on actual important things.

NGL, I’m an Omega Sokka and Alpha Katara truther. I just feel like it makes more sense to me than them both being Alphas or both being Omegas or whatever, ya know? I want to explain more but I, unfortunately, would make a fool of myself because it just shows goes to show much I’ve thought about this all if I already have an explanation prepared. But yeah, while I can handle the idea of an Alpha Sokka, whenever I think of him as an Omega my mind is quick to be all ‘Well, it makes sense, considering how he acts in canon, his choices, blah blah blah…’ same with Omega Katara v.s Alpha Katara.

Personally, I think that in ATLA, pups would present some time after they become 12 (can take weeks, months, maybe even a year or two), so for the entirety of ATLA Toph and Aang are unpresented. But in the comics and such, I’d say Aang would be a Beta and Toph either a Beta as well or an Alpha, but I lean more towards the idea of her being an Alpha.

I think Suki could be a Beta or Omega, but I usually see her as a Beta. She could possibly be an Alpha, and I wouldn’t mind hearing what people think she could be, but I mostly assume she isn’t an Alpha because I feel like it wouldn’t make exact sense. Her wariness of men and how she protects and supports girls so much makes me think if a/b/o were a thing, she’d also feel the need to protect Omegas/Betas from bad Alphas… and it would be a little strange to make her an Alpha if she was trying to protect her girls from them, wouldn’t it? I’m not sure. Either way, I think Sukka would still happen; Betas/Omegas can be with Omegas as well, not just Alphas.

I know that with most a/b/o ATLA fics people tend to make Zuko an Omega, but I seriously think he’d be an Alpha. It makes a lot more sense to me than him being an Omega does, but it’s hard to explain myself considering that this has been in my head for around a week or two now and this whole post is just a random thing I made. I’ll try my best though; I feel like he doesn’t embrace his Alpha tendencies much because of how Azula and Ozai (both Alphas) act and treat others, and he’s afraid of becoming like them. Before his redemption he was deadset on trying his best to be like them, but there was always an underlying disgust he felt at trying to fit into shoes that were a size too big for him. But he continued trying to be a manipulative Alpha anyways because he thought his feelings were cowardly and weak. Does that make sense? I want to explain more, I really do, but I already feel so awkward talking about this all. It feels like I’m nervously rambling to a judge who could throw rotten tomatoes at me at any moment and shout, ‘OFF WITH THEIR HEAD!’ for being dumb 🥲.

I’m not gonna give each of Ozai’s Angels a whole paragraph, nor the side characters, so I’ll just put what I think their second gender is here:

Chapter 3 of Temptation and Other Natural Disasters is up!

Like a stupid pangolin-puppy, Zuko's Alpha seems to think Katara will be impressed that he fought for her. That any minute now she'll come out and tell him how brave he was and welcome him into her den. Even though she clearly hates him, and he's only doing what he said he would anyway. Zuko's Alpha is an idiot. The hints of her scent from behind the door twine with his imagination vividly enough to make him harden in his trousers, and that's embarrassing. Zuko can't just be sitting in a hallway with an erection. So he thinks of her disinterested dismissal instead, and it… helps. Sort of. By the time Uncle returns, Zuko is morose, but no longer indecent.

Considering how his sister acts towards him, him like casting her out isn't to out of character, I don't think, especially if she tries to kill him or something.....he wouldn't be able to beat her but uh....we're gonna ignore plot holes for now-

After a horrible moment that leaves her befuddled, Katara seeks out the most undesirable route to her problem. For Zutara Week 2023 (@zutaraweek), Day 5 + 6: Respite, Forge.

Five days ago, Zuko had found himself stuck with the faint scent of sugar up his nose.

It had been exigent yet also no more than a tendril; so scarce that he’d simply thought that he’d been struck with a peculiar craving.

With the scent came a memory, after all. Winter Solstice with his mother’s side of the family, high in the frosty northern mountains of the Fire Nation. It was a memory from before, when his parents had been happy and his sister had smiled more freely. His great grandfather had taught them how to bake cloudberry-mint cookies that year. “This is snow sugar,” his great grandfather had told them, “it’s made special in the South.”

The hazy smell of that minty sweetness had stayed with him nearly all through the day as he worked, only ebbing when he’d made his routine run around the track in the Embassy’s eastern field. By the time he’d made it back to his suite—because no way was he going to sleep in the barracks if he didn’t have to—the sugar cookies were all he’d been able to think about again, from the foyer to his bedroom, from his shower to his kitchen, his mouth had watered more and more for a flavor that wasn’t there.

Standing in his kitchen in nothing but leftover water droplets and a towel on his hips, Zuko made a decision. He hadn’t quite been up to the task of baking said cloudberry cookies, or even sourcing the right ingredients and having them properly cleared to be brought onto base for that matter, but he had supposed that he could snuff the hankering with a jam-filled powdered donut and a peppermint coffee.

He’d dressed with a place in mind; had stopped by Mai’s suite to ask if she wanted to tag along, his treat. His second in command had promptly stopped sharpening her knives and put her shoes on—not once had he ever heard her say no to free food.

The streets of Yu Dao were as busy as they should’ve been for a pleasant Thursday evening and so was the cafe when they’d stepped inside. For whatever reason, Zuko had been a bit jittery with excitement for that snack. He hadn’t questioned it too much. The smell of sugar had been dense and warm in the air of the cafe and he’d been ready to slate his craving.

And then, after less than a moment of being in line to place their order, the scent of sweetness had transformed right before his nose. Suddenly it had unfurled. Suddenly it had been like a tundra in the spring; florid with thickets of bright, resilient blooms of pink and purple on a blunt cliffside. Suddenly it had been sunshine reflecting on a crashing ocean and crisp, salt-tinged winds, all voracity and wonder and need.

Suddenly there had been a woman with luminous blue eyes turning and baring her teeth at him.

‘What the fuck?’ He’d thought to himself in alarm.

‘Omega?’ Interest had piped up shortly after, tentative and out of place. ‘What gorgeous little fangs...’

‘What the fuck?’ He’d thought again, that time at himself. Had he stepped closer? Why was he reaching for her? She didn’t need to hiss in his face, needn't whimper like that at him. He was only going to help, as he should. He was only going to give her everything that she could ever possibly require—

“Back the fuck up,” Mai had stepped into his line of sight then, had placed her body between him and sugar and then glared death at him with narrowed hazel eyes. He’d curled his lip over his teeth in a silent snarl, a warning, but Mai had only snarled and growled back. “Where’s your head, Zuko?” She’d snapped at him, her quiet tenor as cold and dangerous as any of her knives. “Dude, do I need to drag you out of here? You’re causing a goddamned scene. Remember your station, Major.”

The scent of hot coals had rammed up his nose then—agitation undercut with a touch of concern; alpha, replacing all sweetness of snow sugar in his senses. That had been all it took for him to straighten up, to remember who he was; who Mai was, which was somebody not to be fucked with, not even by him. She was his best friend who had absolutely no problem dragging him by his mangled ear if it meant getting out of the mud alive, and he had no business showing her his teeth.

“What the hell was that?” She’d asked him when they’d eventually sat down with their order, the cafe back to calm; the woman nowhere to be scented or seen. He’d known she meant him though, and truthfully Zuko hadn’t had a fucking clue about the lapse. His senses weren’t often poked at in such a way.

“Don’t know. Next time just deck me in the nose,” he’d said around a bite of donut. The wariness on Mai’s face had ebbed after a moment, instead replaced with a small smirk of acceptance. It was a promise that he knew she’d keep.

Hours later, after Mai had indulged him in a late night spar to help him blow off some lingering steam from that strangle little incident, they’d made their way from the training yard and back towards their respective suites.

The north hall had been closed off for cleaning. They’d thought nothing of it and made the easy decision to cut their way inside through the west.

About halfway down the Embassy’s western wing, they’d heard a crash. It hadn’t been loud—in fact it had been just quiet enough to raise his hackles. One shared glance with Mai and the barest of nods later, they ventured deeper into the building.

Another crash had sounded out; the faint curdle of a wailing growl from the midst of the Ambassador’s Lodge. The closer they got the more the memory of cloudberry-mint cookies persisted in the back of Zuko’s head.

The commotion had been coming from room 012 on the right. Mai had knocked, had pressed her ear to the door and asked if everything was alright. On the other side, something had hit the ground. A loud, agonized whimper had come through.

Mai got the door open. Sugar had flooded Zuko’s nose.

“Stay!” Mai had barked at him on her way in. The command had rankled against him unpleasantly, at being told what to do by another alpha. It had worked, though; had sliced through the weird place that his mind had started to go and cleared the fog that he hadn’t noticed clouding his thoughts—but then there had been another whimper, and then he was inside. Another, more pained whimper, and then Mai had let out a string of curses from where she’d been cradling a woman in the middle of the floor.

‘What the...’

“Medic!” Mai had growled at him. “Now, Major!”

The command had rankled.

Grateful once again, the Major had replaced Zuko.

Aang- born pandynamic, all the avatars are born this way cause I said so. He smells really fresh- think of the wind mixed with mildew cinnamon and a hint of cantelope seeds

Katara - Alpha cause I said so. She smells like coral and seaweed

Sokka - Beta, Beta Chad, it just fits, cause he wants to prove himself like his dad, he smells like kelp

Hadoka and Kya - Standard Alpha/Omega couple, Hadoka smells like the saltwater and Kya smells like iron and berries

Toph - Fucking Omega girlie no one can change my mind. She’s blind and am Omega which adds to her father being an annoying blah blah she’s too fragile - she smells like water melons

Zuko - I’m so conflicted 😭 cause either Beta or Alpha. But I think Alpha, the fact his dad disgraced him for bein an alpha who’s weak just adds. He smells like Ashes and ginger

Iroh - Beta , he’s a wise man, and he smells like chai and green tea

Ty Lee - Beta, it adds to her backstory about her 6 sisters that all look like her and since betas are seen as less interesting it’s just yeAh pushed her to be more special. She has a wooden anise scent - which really attracts the alphas lol

Mei - Beta, her being a beta just kinda adds to the whole Azula control thing cause I can see them being easily ‘moldable’. She smells like green apples

Azula - Alpha, smells like fire lilies
