It means the world to me how much y'all SHOWED UP for this list -- I can't express how grateful I am to see the love for Liam. I can't believe it's been a month tomorrow -- it feels like it just happened, and also like it's been forever, and also like it's still a bad dream that isn't quite real. Grief catches you in the strangest places, surprises you when you least expect it. To everyone still trying to wrap their minds around this tragedy, trying to figure out a way forward through it -- I see you, I love you, I'm glad you're here, and I support you in whatever you need.

Omegaverse: TLDR My peak fave scenario for the OT3 is both atsumu and kageyama as alphas and oikawa as the omega

Oikage: my default is kageyama alpha and oikawa omega... but I can fuck with alpha/alpha (i am enthusiastically looking and enhance zoom 200%) or omega/omega (less interested but i am watching from afar... you can hook and bait me easily as long as it's oikg lol) I'm quite partial to kageyama being an alpha bc i enjoy kageyama having the one up on oikawa in like... talent / genetics / whatever system of the universe they are in bc it gives oikawa more reason to feel inferior, fight against the odds, and resent kageyama at the beginning of their relationship LOL it makes it all the more sweet when they bridge that gap... and also bc I like kageyama admiring oikawa soooo much and being obsessed with oikw regardless of his status (especially if it's considered lesser) in any world haha.....

His arch-nemesis Louis knocks on his dorm-room door in the middle of a pampering self-care night and sees the side of Harry that he keeps hidden. What follows is a fantastic gAyBO story about repressing, exploring, and accepting your true self. There is a strong cast of OT5 and related people that keep you laughing and believing. Honestly, I need to re-read this right now.

Get ready to be absolutely consumed by this parallel universe and the angst-ridden reality of Louis, pretend alpha and head of security, and Harry, feminine alpha and new-hire. There is enjoyable intrigue, mystery, crying, sex, political philosophizing, and some spy movie shit as Louis attempts to right wrongs and push back against those in power. OT5 pop up in surprising and satisfying ways. However, perhaps most notable to me was the attention to detail in how Louis deals with pretending to be a gender he is not. (Perhaps don’t read while in your gender dysphoria feels but do read to feel seen.)

I read this fic in the first days of 2023, so the details are a bit blurry in my memory. I know I loved the enemies to lovers arc, the strong Ziam subplot, and Harry obsessing over his unavailable crush (which isn’t Louis). In my comment, I wrote, “My heart absolutely ached with the pining and angst, and the sexual tension was so palpable.”

This canon-based fic was so steamy and tender. Photos of Louis performing in a tanktop get Harry going. What follows is some long-distance edging and fun. It features soft Dom Louis and desperate Harry and just really hits all the right notes in my opinion.

Almost Misheard by tommokat @tommokat Teen and Up | 4k | Friends to Lovers / ABO

This is a comfort fic. It’s got hilarious fluff about best friends who realize what their inner alpha and omega knew all along. (The rest of the gang might be in on the secret too.) I’m almost amazed by fics that manage to pull me in with believable characters and storylines without any angst, and this one delivers on every front. You’ll be grinning the whole time.

Coax the Cold by MediaWhore @mediawhorefics Mature | 86k | Mermaid / Historical AU

Professor Tomlinson is fascinated by the occult. When a circus advertises a unique sea creature, he decides to go undercover as a janitor to get close. He plans to write the paper that will finally prove he was right about the existence of fantastical creatures. This author expertly builds the world of this fic – 1800s Britain, academia, and freak shows. I loved the believable cast of characters (OT5 and more!) and the stakes that are set, including the horrid antagonists.

Harry and Louis childhood best friends who grew up and discovered love together in a quiet village. Harry manages asthma and chronic illness that often leaves him homebound with his books, but Louis always keeps him company. Their simple life is turned upside down when Louis is drafted in WWI and does not return home. Then, when Harry finally finds him, Louis doesn’t remember anything. This story was a tearjerker but so beautifully written. I adored that portions of the story were told in letters and that Harry often referred to literary works. Bonus: This fic has amazing visuals by whenthebodiesspeak.

Someone wrote the Music for a Sushi Restaurant fic of my dreams. Half-man, half-squid, with the voice of an angel, Harry is quite the catch. It filled me up with good vibes and left me happier than I started.

the way the storms blow by rbbsbb (E, 22K) What would happen if you walked in on your best friend in the midst of an orgy? Louis finds out and it’s pretty damn hot.

And Touch Me Like You Never by runaway_train (E, 36K) I really enjoyed how this author handled Harry’s confusion and growing attraction and eventual sexuality crisis. That, along with the angst and very sexy smut, made it a really good read.

Seeing Blind by zedi (E, 47K) I really liked the way this author gave a twist to both Omega Harry and Alpha Louis’ characteristics. It’s a whole lot of smut and miscommunication and, of course, a happy ending.

To Be The Friction In Your Jeans by orphan_account (E, 20K) slightly dated characterizations because it was written in 2012 (no one writes OT4/5 orgies anymore, do they?), but I actually really like this one. It’s simultaneously funny, oddly believable, and really damn hot. Harry-centric.

Young & Beautiful by velvetoscar (M, 227K) This fic is wordy and descriptive (which isn’t for everyone) and the characters are probably pretty OOC, but I love it anyway. I know that doesn’t sound like a recommendation, but truly the writing is poetry, the characters are so well-developed, the visuals and setting have stuck with me for years –– there’s a reason this one is a classic.

Into The Blue by zarah5 (E, 117K) honestly, I love all of this author’s fics, but I think this is my favorite of theirs. Louis as a flirty scuba instructor? Newly single Harry who just wants a fling? Boys living on other sides of the world who only have a few weeks together? Heartbreak. Hot af smut. OT5 friendship. Please….give me all that shit.

The light to guide me home by Star_Henderson / @tommosgun (E, 65K) I don’t know what it is about this fic but I’ve read it so many times and I just really love the instant chemistry, the smut is stupid hot and fuels the character growth, and even with the angst, the whole thing is just lighthearted and sexy.

I've been writing sooo much the past few days, this fic has just completely captivated me. “Harry said double dialling was a bad look but who can blame me for wanting to hear your voice,” Niall purred as soon as the line connected. The cheeky smile he was wearing could be heard in his suggestive lilt. The side of Louis's neck throbbed. He closed his eyes to it, not sure if he wanted to stop or savour the bright ache. 

“Niall,” he tried, and it came out like a whimper clouded with confusion, his thoughts shutting down into base instincts. Niall’s mark was on his neck. Niall would know what to do. Niall would fix this. 

“What’s wrong?” Niall’s voice went cold, every trace of teasing gone. 

He sounded angry. Louis didn’t want him to be angry. He wanted him here. Because- because he was-

“D- drop- ping.” The word a three part stutter through clenched teeth. 

Niall said something like a swear word, then something else, but it all became noise Louis couldn’t follow. All he could think about was the burning on his neck and the need to go home. Not this impersonal place, not his drafty flat, but somewhere safe and warm and-

“Omega,” a new voice crooned through the speaker. It was smooth and gentle, like a hand stroking over his spine. 

“Please.” The word slipped from Louis's lips before he knew what he was asking for. Anything, he figured. Anything the voice was willing to give him. 

The voice rumbled in a low hum and it washed over Louis like a hot bath, warming him from head to curling toes. “You’re okay, luv, I’m right here with you. Tell me where we are.” 

“Kitchen floor.” 

“Your kitchen?” Louis hummed in assent.  “All right, let’s get you somewhere better, hmm? Put me on speaker. Tell me when it’s done.”

He forced his fingers to move. “Done.” 

“Put the phone in your hand. Is it done?” 

Louis clutched it with a dying man’s sweaty palm. “Done.” 

“Now I want you to get on your knees- Don’t stand, we don’t want you falling. Hands and knees, let’s go.” 

Louis shook his head in denial even as he rolled onto his stomach and slowly, ever so slowly, got his jello limbs to push up. He immediately shifted his weight backwards to his heels like a praying man looking for salvation with his forehead pressed to the cool laminate. 

Trembling from exertion he knew he had to tell Alpha it was done, he had to follow the rules. “D-done.” 

“Good job, Louis. Now go to the sofa.”

A whine peeled from him. Impossible. There was no way he could manage it, he- 

“C’mon, I know you can be good for me.” 

“Trying,” he promised immediately. 

He could be good, he knew how to be good. His muscles tensed, and painstakingly slow he started moving, one shuffle at a time, towards the sofa he could see across the open-plan room. 

It could have taken him hours to cross the floor, all he knew was the constant battle against his shaking limbs and the need to do what Alpha told him. By the time he got to the overstuffed sofa still smelling of the store it was from, he was too tired to protest rolling into it with one last final push to get onto the cushions. He burrowed into the crease of them. 

He was panting hot breath into the narrow space. Eyes watering. If he were clear headed, he’d have been embarrassed. As it were, he was sunk so low he didn’t have the energy to cry propper. 

“Louis, tell me you made it,” said the angel in the phone. 

“Made it,” he whispered, because he knew how to listen, he did. 

“Good boy, Louis. Now stay where I put you.” The world was black. Alpha put him here. Alpha made him safe. 

The silence was too big, it let the fear creep in, fear that despite what Alpha said, Louis hadn’t been good enough.

The world fell away with the urgency of free-fall. His body tensed and curled into the tightest ball it could, hunching into itself with gripping terror that he’d been left alone, falling in the dark. 

He gasped a wet, ragged cry. “Don’t-!” 

“I’m right here,” Alpha crooned. And he was, his voice spun out with words that became a melodious thread, and it wove into a blanket large enough to swallow Louis whole. 

His mind went black.
