It means that immortality technically isn't yours but your partner's, and you get connected to it by bite mark. Which means that the moment the bond is broken, you will start to age and eventually die.

1- Malec divorce- misunderstanding/falling out of love/ getting tired of immortality, and wanting to be mortal again.

2.- Magnus dies- bond would be broken, and with Magnus death, Alec's source of immortality, would no longer exist. He would live 60 more years and die of old age.

You know, one of the things that always bothered me about your typical a/b/o fic (besides the obvious), is that Betas are hardly even relevant. Like, what even are they there for? Very few plots even make use of them besides tagging certain, non-main-ship characters as that gender, probably mostly to get them out of the way? So, anyway, I thought how about shinig a light on that gender for once? Betas aren't born. People can become that elusive gender by overcoming their biological drive (the stereotypical alpha aggressiveness/dominance and omega fragility/submission). Betas have the unique ability to counteract the other two genders. Calming the "alpha" and emboldening the "omega", so to speak. But overcoming your natural instincts is hard, so they are rare. Magnus used to be omega, until he fought back against his captors at an illegal sex trafficking market and freed the other slaves. Alec used to be alpha, until he resisted his rut so to not rape an omega. One day, the two of them meet.
