The constellation of Corona Borealis // Malcolm Park
Corona Borealis, or the "northern crown", is generally assumed to represent a crown given by the god Dionysus to Ariadne, the daughter of Minos of Crete, after she had been abandoned by the Athenian prince Theseus. She wore this crown at her wedding to Dionysus.
Read below the cut for some info about these stars and a chart to help identify them!
The stars featured, in order of brightness, are:
Alphecca (α Coronae Borealis) is named from the Arabic phrase nayyir al-fakka meaning "the bright [star] of the broken [ring of stars]". It is a binary star system, one star being a blue-white star and the other being a white star. It is about 75 light years away.
Nusakan (β Coronae Borealis) has a name that comes from the Arabic al-nasaqān meaning "the two lines [of stars]". This is another binary star system composed of two white stars. It is about 112 light years away.
γ Coronae Borealis is a binary star system composed of two blue-white stars. It is about 146 light years away.
θ Coronae Borealis is yet another binary star system of two blue-white stars. This is much further away at 380 light years.
ε Coronae Borealis is a binary star system of two red giant stars. It has a planet orbiting it, about 7 times more massive than Jupiter. The system is about 242 light years away.
δ Coronae Borealis is a solitary yellow-white giant star. It is also a variable star that changes brightness every 45 days. It is about 165 light years away.
ι Coronae Borealis is a binary star system of two white giant stars. The system is about 312 light years away.

August 4, 2024. New Moon
Overview of the visibility of constellations and planets
The new moon will occur on August 4 shortly after midday. The Sun and Moon will be in the constellation Cancer, but the Moon will be three and a half degrees north of the Sun. The constellations closest to them — Leo (through which the fastest planets — Venus and Mercury — are currently moving), Sextans, Canis Minor and Hydra — are invisible at this time, due to their proximity to the Sun.
The Moon, although not directly visible, nevertheless has the appearance of an extremely thin crescent, which is inaccessible to the eye. But the most experienced astrophotographers sometimes manage to photograph the Moon — its crescent-shaped reflection — even on the day of the new moon — at the limit of the capabilities of their cameras and software.
Let’s talk about what is available for observation on these days and the calendar dates close to them.
An hour and a half after sunset — above the sector of the horizon where this happened — the stars of the Ursa Major’s Dipper will become most noticeable. Under the handle of the Dipper is the constellation Canes Venatici, and to the left of them is the orange Arcturus — the brightest star in the northern celestial hemisphere and the head of the constellation Bootes. The figure of this constellation extends upward from Arcturus and is similar to the symbol of a parachute, on the lines of which the orange Arcturus descends to the horizon. This descent occurs quite quickly. And in a few minutes you will notice it without difficulty and any devices. Even to the left of Bootes you can find a dim, but noticeable and very beautiful constellation of the Corona Borealis — an arc of faint stars, decorated with a pearl — Gemma. The head of the Serpens stretches toward Gemma — the only constellation on the star map divided into two parts. The Serpent’s Tail is currently located in the southern sky. We will move our gaze there a little later.
Below the constellation Canes Venatici and to the right of Arcturus, the constellation Coma Berenices, not shining with bright luminaries, but very beautiful, leans toward the horizon, in the northern part of which a swarm of stars of medium and low brightness flickers, which does not have an ancient mythological name — only a number in the catalog — Melott 111. But it was this unclear starry glow that ancient people perceived as the luxurious hair of the Egyptian Queen Berenice. This was a sacrifice to the Gods and the price of the return of her husband — the Egyptian king Ptolemy III — from the war as a winner.
___
In the direction of the southern point, you can see the constellation Sagittarius, barely peeking out from behind the horizon. Sagittarius does not rise completely in the middle northern latitudes. Its figure, composed of fairly bright stars, seems dim and inexpressive here due to the absorption of starlight by the atmosphere near the horizon, where in the evenings there is always a lot of dust raised during the day. By morning, the dust settles, but Sagittarius will set behind the horizon much earlier.
To the right of Sagittarius, the “Claws of Scorpius” have almost set behind the horizon — a small part of this constellation visible in the north, but it is among the stars of the “Claws” that the orange-red Antares — “Heart of Scorpius” shines. Together with Scorpius (to the right of it), Libra, which was once only an extension of the sharp and long claws, is also hiding behind the horizon. The stars of Libra still bear the corresponding names — “Northern Claw”, “Southern Claw” — in Arabic, of course.
A bright star shines above Sagittarius — Altair. This is alpha Aquila — one of the main summer constellations. Its figure, composed of stars of medium brightness, really resembles a bird flying in the sky. To the west of the Aquila, there is an extended constellation of Ophiuchus — a constellation very rich in interesting telescopic objects, but poor in stars even of medium brightness. Between Ophiuchus and Aquila, experienced observers can find the constellation Scutum and the very same “Tail of the Serpent”.
To the east and above Altair, you can notice several miniature constellations — Equuleus, Delphinus, Sagitta and Vulpecula (in which on July 30, 2024, a new, but very weak — 10th magnitude — star flared up). These four constellations are located one after the other — following from bottom to top and from left to right near Altair.
___
In the eastern direction, it is easy to notice the huge Square of Pegasus — now it is turned so that it looks more like a Rhombus. Pisces is emerging right from under it — only the alpha of this constellation — Alrisha — remains under the horizon. But it will also rise soon.
To the right of Pisces and Pegasus, Aquarius and a fairly bright Saturn are rising. Neptune is located somewhere near it, but you cannot see it without a telescope — it is a very distant and weak planet. Even further to the right, Capricornus has almost completely risen.
To the right of the Square of Pegasus, there is a chain of stars of the asterism “Head of Pegasus” — it adjoins the Equuleus.
To the left of the Square of Pegasus, there is a chain of stars of the constellation Andromeda. Historically, Pegasus and Andromeda were drawn inseparably on star maps. This continues to this day — the constellations are connected by the star alpha Andromeda — Alpheratz. Previously, it belonged to two constellations at the same time. And above Andromeda, the beautiful and noticeable constellation Cassiopeia is easily recognizable, this season resembling the Latin letter “W”. Below Andromeda, you can see the constellations Triangulum and Aries. Aries has not yet fully risen above the horizon.
___
In the northern part of the sky, the bright Capella, shimmering with all the colors of the rainbow, attracts attention — the brightest star of the constellation Auriga, which belongs to the winter group of constellations. But in the middle northern latitudes, Capella never sets below the horizon.
To the right of Capella, you can see the constellation Perseus, whose brightest star — Mirfak — lies on the continuation of the chain of Andromeda stars and seems to connect Andromeda and Auriga. Closer to the morning, Perseus will rise high in the sky and shower the August night with dozens of sparkling meteors, sometimes called “falling stars.” This meteor shower is called the Perseids, and during its annual activity — from mid-July to the end of August — not a single real star is damaged.
The peak activity of the Perseid shower occurs on the nights from August 11 to 13. The Moon at this time will be located in the evening sky, and will not interfere with pre-dawn observations of meteors.
Above Capella and to the left of Perseus lies the practically starless space of the constellation Camelopardalis. In the city, it will not be possible to discern the figure of this constellation. Lynx, a constellation located between Auriga and Ursa Major, is equally inconspicuous.
Above Capella you can see the North Star and a couple of stars of Ursa Minor that are comparable in brightness. To the right of it, like an upside-down house, is Cepheus, adjacent to Cassiopeia. And between the Ursulas, the Draco runs like a winding river, its tail resting against the Camelopardalis, and its head reaches the very zenith of the summer skies.
___
In the zenith region of the sky are the constellations of Lyra and Cygnus, headed by the bright stars — Vega and Deneb, which together with Altair (located below them in the southern direction) form the famous asterism — the “Summer Triangle”. Cygnus flies with its wings spread wide. At the same time, the left wing points to the “Hooves of Pegasus”, and the right — to the “Head of the Draco” — a small and beautiful trapezoid of medium-brightness stars, adjacent to Vega and the constellation of Hercules, which also has its own stellar trapezoid — so it is called — “Trapezium of Hercules”, and one of the brightest globular star clusters — M13 is hidden from the naked eye in it. There are quite a lot of globular clusters in the summer sky. But the most famous are M13 in the “Trapezium of Hercules” and M15 in the “Head of Pegasus”.
A little to the side of the “Hooves of Pegasus” and the “Tail of the Swan”, in which the bright Deneb burns, there is an inconspicuous constellation of the Lacerta, whose dim stars are unlikely to be seen within the city limits.
___
By two a.m., the Aquarius constellation will rise to its maximum height, and the bright Saturn located in it will be very clearly visible in the southern direction.
To the left of Aquarius and under the highly risen Pisces, Cetus has already fully risen — a large constellation of not very clear configuration, the stars of which seem to split into two groups — the “Head of Cetus” and the “Tail of Cetus”, directed upward and decorated with the alpha of the constellation — the star Menkar. The famous long-period variable star Mira of Cetus is also located in the “Tail”, but it has already passed its annual maximum in May and has already weakened greatly — invisible to the eye.
To the left of Cetus — directly above the point of the east, Taurus is already shining with two bright planets — Jupiter and Mars. Both of these luminaries are located near Aldebaran, the brightest star in Taurus, and form a beautiful triangle with Aldebaran — a few nights ago it was equilateral, but from night to night its proportions change noticeably — the fast Mars is rapidly catching up with Jupiter.
There is another planet in the constellation Taurus now — Uranus. It is not visible to the naked eye, but can be easily found with binoculars a little to the south of the Pleiades — the most beautiful open star cluster in the sky. Another beautiful and bright star cluster — the Hyades — surrounds the orange Aldebaran, which does not belong to the Hyades, because in space it lies approximately halfway from the Sun to the stars of the mentioned cluster.
Directly above the constellation Taurus and the trinity of “Jupiter — Mars — Aldebaran” Perseus looks down from the heavenly heights upon the mortal Earth, holding in his hand the severed head of Medusa the Gorgon, in whose eye the eclipsing variable star Algol — beta Persei slyly winks every three nights. Perseus is known as the illusory source of the Perseid stream. It seems to us that the sparks of the “falling stars” fly to us from this constellation. But in fact, the trajectory of the orbit of the comet Swift-Tuttle is directed in this direction. In July-August of each year, the Earth approaches the orbit of this comet, along which small meteoroids — particles of the disintegrating comet’s core — fly. Some of them meet the Earth and burn up in the atmosphere. On the night of maximum, in an hour of observation, it is possible to notice several dozen (sometimes even up to a hundred) meteors. But they should be observed outside the city, preferably in the mountains.
Just before dawn, the stars of the Gemini constellation, Castor and Pollux, will rise above the northeastern horizon. These are winter stars, but in August some winter constellations already begin to peek out from behind the horizon coulisse, to become fully visible by autumn and for quite a long time.

To find the star, observers should look for Corona Borealis the Northern Crown, a curved constellation just west of Hercules, best seen in the Northern Hemisphere. The crown’s brightest star is Alpha (α) CrB, at magnitude 2.2 — about as bright as T CrB will appear in outburst. From there, look east down the crown’s curve, passing the stars Gamma (γ) and Delta (δ) CrB. The soon-to-be showstopper, T CrB, is about 2.2° east of Delta. While not visible to the naked eye, T CrB can currently be seen with a telescope or binoculars. T CrB’s 80-year cycle is well documented. It follows the same phases. The star is stable and then begins to ramp up in brightness before undergoing a pre-eruption dip in magnitude and, about 11 months later, a big explosion. In 2015, scientists noticed it was starting to fluctuate; then, last April, T CrB observers noticed its brightness dip. “T CrB could go up any night now. Or it might go up any month now,” Schaefer says. It’s hard to predict, he admits, “but probably sometime this year.” When T CrB goes off, it will only be at maximum brightness for half a day before you must wait another 80 years to see it with your naked eyes. So go out and keep an eye on it!
anyone else hyped for the probably upcoming eruption of T coronae borealis (T CrB) the recurring nova in the constellation corona borealis

New to me constellations January 8-12 2021
Clear winter nights are a real respite for me from work and the unremitting political media during the day. Here are a few of the more obscure constellations that I was able to photograph during this time in the past week. The open cluster Praesepe in the zodiacal constellation Cancer is top right in the top photo. The head of the serpent Hydra is just underneath against the right side of the photo. Follow the serpent's body down to the orange alpha star Alphard in the bottom right. Hydra is the largest constellation and continues far into the southern sky. Leo occupies the center of the top photo. The top third of the middle photo has Cancer in the right corner, Castor and Pollux middle and Capella and Menkalinan in Auriga on the left. The orange alpha star (the cat's tail) of Lynx is near the middle of the photo to the left of mane of Leo and above the feet of Ursa Major. Lynx continues through the center of the photo and ends underneath Menkalinan. This is a very faint constellation and was introduced in the 17th century. Corona Borealis occupies the top left of the bottom photo and the triangular head of the snake Serpens is underneath. Follow the body to the orange to red alpha star Unukalhai. Serpens Caput ends with the white binary Mu Serpentis just above the trees. Arcturus is in the top center and Spica and Virgo is to the right

This Month’s Full Moon is a Super Moon, occurring when the Moon is at perigee. April’s Full Moon is also commonly called a Pink Moon. Friday, April 23 Corona Borealis the Northern Crown is a small constellation tucked between Hercules, Serpens Caput, and Boötes. It represents the crown of the princess Ariadne, who helped Theseus defeat King Minos’ Minotaur. The constellation’s alpha star, 2nd-magnitude Alphecca, is also commonly referred to as Gemma. Within this small, unassuming constellation is a curious variable star: R Coronae Borealis. Located about 3.5° northeast of Alphecca, R Cor Bor is an unpredictable variable that usually appears around magnitude 6. But its brightness can vary wildly, even dipping as faint as magnitude 14 before brightening again. Astronomers aren’t entirely sure what causes these changes, but leading theories include an aging star undergoing flashes of helium burning or a merging binary white dwarf system. Either way, take a look tonight to see whether you can spot this strange star. Glenn Chaple’s June 2020 column includes a handy chart showing Corona Borealis and the brightness of its components for easy comparison with R Cor Bor. Sunrise: 6:10 A.M. Sunset: 7:47 P.M. Moonrise: 3:46 P.M. Moonset: 4:34 A.M. Moon Phase: Waxing gibbous (84%) *Times for sunrise, sunset, moonrise, and moonset are given in local time from 40° N 90° W. The Moon’s illumination is given at 12 P.M. local time from the same location. #april2021fullmoon #fullmoon #pinkmoon #supermoon https://www.instagram.com/p/COCEevxH0gP/?igshid=7l8u5fn0t8jz

Probing the X-ray Spectra of Alpha Coronae Borealis. (arXiv:1911.03060v1 [astro-ph.HE])
We present a detailed spectral and timing analysis of X-ray observations of the brightest eclipsing systems Alpha Coronae Borealis taken by XMM-Newton. We got from the thermal plasma model metal the abundances of some elements (O, Mg, Si, and Fe) and an emission line at 1.3 Kev from the simple Gaussian line profile. From the light curves, there is a strong active region at the lower left in the maps, near the limb of the G component, and increasing in some parts which means a band diagonally running across the G star disk from lower left to upper right, close to the projected center.

Greek Constellations
The Greek civilization and the study of Astronomy have long been intertwined, both in studying natural observations and attributing myths related to the observation of heavenly bodies. No fact makes the correlation between Greeks and Astronomy more clearly visible than in the naming of the constellations. The constellations tend to be based off people or objects that have key significance in the Greek myths. Although not an all-inclusive list, some of the more famous constellations named for figures in the Greek myths include the constellations Andromeda, Pegasus, Corona Borealis, Corvus, Lyra, and Draco.
The constellation Andromeda was named for the woman Andromeda in the Greek myths. In the story, the maid Andromeda was chained to a rock at sea to appease Poseidon because her mother Cassiopeia claimed she was more beautiful than the sea nymphs. Poseidon, who was very angry at Cassiopeia’s claim, had sent a sea monster to ravage the shores of the kingdom. Andromeda’s father consulted an oracle who informed him that for the monster to disappear, he must sacrifice his daughter. As she lay chained to the rocks, the hero Perseus came across Andromeda and saved her life by turning the monster to stone using the head of Medusa. After her death, Andromeda was placed in the skies as a constellation to honor her willingness to sacrifice, or so the legend dictates. The constellation Andromeda is easily located by first locating the constellation Pegasus, as it has a unique square of four stars. The star Alpha marks Andromeda’s head as she awaited her fate. The constellation Pegasus was inspired by the lord of the winged horses Pegasus, the first of his kind. When Perseus, son of Zeus slayed the monster Medusa, Pegasus sprang into being from her spilled blood. Pegasus then took to the skies and joined the nine muses on Mount Olympus until the goddess Athena gave him to the hero Bellerophon to use in his battle against the Chimera. When the battle was complete, Pegasus went back to the skies and served Zeus by carrying his thunderbolts until his death, a which point Zeus placed him in the sky as a constellation that all could witness. The great square that Pegasus forms makes it easily identifiable in the autumn skies of the Northern Hemisphere.
The Corona Borealis is named for Ariadne’s crown in the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. In the myth, Ariadne was the daughter of King Minos, who kept the Minotaur trapped beneath his palace in a labyrinth. The purpose of this was so that Every year, seven young men and seven young women were sent to the labyrinth and sacrificed to the Minotaur to appease King Minos regarding the death of his son.Theseus was sent to Crete to be sacrificed and determined that he would defeat the Minotaur. He met the princess Ariadne, who gave him a magical ball of thread that would allow him to navigate the labyrinth if he took her back to Athens and married her. He agreed and defeated the Minotaur, shortly thereafter setting sail for Athens. However, Ariadne was accidentally abandoned on an island by Theseus, who never returned. The god Dionysus found her and married her. After her death, Dionysus placed her crown in the stars. The Corona Borealis is in the Northern Hemisphere.
The constellation Corvus is named for a crow, albeit it is not shaped similarly. In the myth, the god Apollo sent a crow to fetch some water for him as it was known to perform simple tasks. However, the crow was not known for having a serious and/or reverent attitude. The crow left to fetch the water but happened upon a fig tree, realized it was hungry, and stopped to eat. The crow realized it had kept Apollo waiting, and snatched up a water snake to blame for its tardiness. Apollo did not believe the crow’s story and threw the snake, crow, and cup of water into the sky where they are immortalized in the stars. Corvus is identifiable as a quadrilateral formed by four bright stars and is close to the constellation Hydra.
The myth behind the constellation Lyra is also associated with Apollo, which is interesting because Hermes made the first lyre out of the shell of a tortoise and strung it with strings made of cow gut. As an infant, the god Hermes stole Apollo’s sacred cattle, sacrificing many to the other Gods. Apollo located Hermes and was very angry. Hoping to appease Apollo, Hermes gave him the first Lyra which he constructed himself. Apollo was pleased and placed the Lyra into the sky where it could be admired by all. Lyra is most easily located by finding its lead star Vega, which is the fifth brightest star in the heavens. Vega shines brilliantly high overhead in summer in the Northern Hemisphere making Lyra one of the most identifiable constellations despite its small size.
Draco is named for the dragon that guarded the garden of the Hesperides who never slept, thus keeping the apples of Hera from being stolen. The dragon was known as Ladon. The dragon Ladon had 100 heads and was an eternally vigilant guardian of the garden of the daughters of Atlas which was said to have been located in the most remote western limits of the world. These apples granted immortality to any who partook of them and were a wedding present to Hera from Zeus. As one of his many tasks given to him by the goddess Hera, the hero Hercules was required to steal one of these golden apples. Hercules was eventually able to slay Ladon, who was placed in the stars for his guardianship of Hera’s apples. The constellation is identifiable by first finding the North Star Polaris. Draco is so far north that for most of the Northern Hemisphere, it is circumpolar.

Constellation Research and Experimental Book
I used the experimental book as a chance to begin my term project and sought to work on the series of cards first. This was a great chance for me to deepen my broader knowledge on the constellations as a whole. Based on the IAU website (https://www.iau.org/public/themes/constellations/) I sorted the constellations and found out brief information about them.
Through this i found that one of the originally 48 Greek constellations was actually split into 3 due to its massive size taking the number of constellations from 48 to 51.

I can’t help but feel optimistic when I see Deneb, here in the left corner, in the early morning (taken yesterday) as a sort of harbinger for spring. In addition, the head and shoulders of the serpent-bearer Ophiuchus, on the right, are starting to come into view just before dawn. Alpha Ophiuchi, the blue-white Rasalhague, is approximately at the same declination as Vega (or at least are on the plane), toward the center here. The familiar semi-circular Corona Borealis is to the top right.
