Veteran Bodyguard was printed in limited edition Alpha so that means it also has printings in beta, unlimited, and revised. Furthermore, veteran bodyguard has printings in collector's edition and international edition as well as Magic 30th anniversary edition. In this post, I will be discussing the revised edition as that is the cheapest tournament legal printing of the card. I will discuss my thoughts on these other printings at another time. It shocks me that there are any reserved list cards in limited edition that are bulk or near bulk. While revised had a much larger print run than some other reserved list sets, I still believe that these cards are undervalued. There will come a day when even revised, reserved list cards will break the bank. Currently, veteran bodyguard can be purchased for between one and two bucks. Since the card is still budget friendly than the card must be unplayable as a gamepiece, right? I do not agree with that statement. A 2/5 for five is below rate in terms of stats but the ability seems under costed. Redirecting damage is not a commonly used effect. Very few cards redirect damage in the modern era and this is a static, continous effect. Surely, mtg has printed the veteran bodyguard effect on more efficient creatures. A quick search shows that this is not exactly true. Pariah is an aura that offers this ability for three mana but you need to provide your own creature to enchant. Palisade giant and protector of the crown also offer the same effect with upside but those cards cost 6 mana so the mana cost if less efficient. Likewise, weathered bodyguard can morph on turn 3 and flip on turn 4 but that is 7 mana total across two turns. Thus, veteran bodyguard has never really been power creeped. It is so strange that they have never made a more efficient version of the bodyguard effect when the card came out 30 years ago in alpha. The card has never been considered overpowered but this effect is not in favor so I am not sure if we ever get this ability at 4 mana. Can we also note the flavor? A bodyguard jumping in front and taking the damage for you is just spot on. Giving Veteran Bodyguard indestructible is also a strong synergy. Tapping the veteran will turn off the ability which is an issue that some of the other versions of this card do not have. There are not many decks that can utilize this card or this effect. Jared carthelion true heir has a similiar theme and stuffy doll decks may have a need for this. Rune tail kitsune ascendant commander decks work perfectly with veteran bodyguard and it seems like a staple in that deck. Unfortunately, rune-tail decks are not particularly popular. I did not even know the commander existed until today but I do enjoy a flip commander. The card did spike in 2018 to 3 dollars which is still relatively low but there were some reserved list cards that remained flat. The fact that this card did shoot up means there was some interest. 9.50 was the high in 2021 and I still think that is low. Should any playable reserved list card in limited edition be under 10? I think this card is one competitively viable commander away from spiking. Just look at the effect bloomburrow has had. Seeds of innocence was also the most efficient version of an effect and it was still bulk for years even after seeing legacy sideboard play. Will this follow that same trajectory?

So I'm currently on a quest to read all the Magic: The Gathering cards released for Alpha/Beta/Unlimited and try to remeber most of them and then see how it all evolved. And whilst reading them I love to go the 'View all prints' section on Scryfall. Some of the cards didn't have reprints at all, others had some interesting ones like the Air Elemental, for which every iteration was pretty diffirent in flavour and art. But what caught my eye the most (for now) is the Dark Ritual.
Tumblr media
Its reprints are out of this world, every one hella unique and flavourful in its own way. Not gonna list all of them, you can see them for yourself. But as a fan of Phyrexia I especially love this one.
Tumblr media
But it might be that I'm also kinda enjoying the vibe of classic balck cards, they're that 'basic evil', but sometimes it is so badass. Even though I think the later revision of the colour is much better.

Hi there,
My name is Kevin. I've been collecting old frame MtG basic lands for some time now and I'd like to use this space to document and share my progress as well as things I find interesting about each set with anyone who appreciates old frame basics as much as I do.
The scope of my collection includes all foil and non-foil English and Traditional Chinese old frame basics, printed on legal backs (meaning no playtest cards, Collectors’ Edition, etc.). Additionally, I have included basics in languages outside of these two, provided they differ in some way from them, such as Simplified Chinese 5th Edition, Simplified Chinese Portal, German Foreign Black Border (error), and Japanese Portal Three Kingdoms (error).
I am still missing basics from two of the more price-prohibitive sets: Summer and Guru, and I am also beginning to dabble in Artist Proofs of old frame basics. Looking forward to providing some updates on my progress with these.
Feel free to browse through my posts or use the links below to jump to a specific set. If I got anything wrong or missed anything, please do to let me know. The images used are scans of my personal copies of the cards, so the quality is not the best due to limitations in my setup. If you'd like to admire these beauties up close in high resolution, I recommend checking them out on Scryfall. Thanks for your time!

Hmm. By this definition, we're already well past the big 100. But 20 of those are core sets, so I guess people saying Thunder Junction will be #100 are focusing specifically on premier expansion sets.
If we're giving definitions for what we call a premier set, I'd say it's just the sets that have gone through standard. Part of that is premier sets now mean standard sets, but also because for most of Magic those were the main product releases for Magic.
I think "was legal in Standard" is a fine metric. But even that raises questions:
Do you count sets that pre-exist Standard?
If you do, do you count sets like Alpha and Beta that are pretty similar, but technically differ in what cards are in it as one set or two?
Do you count sets that only have reprints like Third Edition?
If you do, do you count other sets like Renaissance that are reprint-only sets?

In a Box, With a Mox? Moxes!
As those of you who have read some of my previous articles know, I started playing Magic with Revised Edition cards, having missed out on Alpha, Beta and Unlimited(or 1st and 2nd Edition, as I’ve seen them referred as in certain articles). As such, I gained a reverence for some of those cards that would never see print again(except in certain one-off sets): Forcefield, Ancestral Recall, Black Lotus, Lich, Time Walk. Even Chaos Orb is one of those cards I wouldn't mind having, just from a Johnny standpoint.
Now, when my friends and I would get together to play, and someone would have a slow start, we’d invariably say, “Man, if only I had a Black Lotus.” Black Lotus was the be-all end-all of the older cards we missed out on. And, mind you, in all the LCS’s I’ve been to, I have never seen one for sale; not even at the store where I bought my precious Revised(3rd) Edition Vesuvan Doppelgänger(that will be a story for another time).
But close behind in the pantheon of mythic cards, underneath the Black Lotus as Zeus, were the Moxes. The moxes would only get mentioned if someone was running more than one color and was getting land hosed on both. The zero casting cost Moxes would then be dreamt of, especially for us blue-artifact inclined, to alleviate our mana woes(now keep in mind the the Moxes have been restricted for quite some time, so the possibility of one Mox not doing much to resolve our mana problem was never brought up).
And you're probably asking yourself right now; “What does this have to do with Vorthos?” I am glad you asked.
The Black Lotus is a flower(artifact?), a rare flower that can only be used once. But the Moxes are artifacts that can be used over and over again, turn after turn. What kind of sorcery is this?! Especially at a zero casting cost, this makes this very rare and powerful magic!
Tumblr media
Off the top of my head, most of the cards I know, post Mox, that are zero casting cost are very weak cards(I don't care if I’ve just upset all the kobold fanatics out there, all three of you). And yes, Black Lotus is the rising and the setting sun in this scenario because, as well as being a zero casting cost, it gives you three mana to boot. But the lotus has to be sacked to get your mana, while the Moxes have to be Shatter-ed away.
What kind of fevered mind invented these precious jewels, infusing them with so much elemental power that they are just fonts of mana? What kind of sacrifice was needed in order to enervate them(I imagine something like the Philosopher’s Stone from Fullmetal Alchemist…or Harry Potter)? And how would someone in the possession of an artifact like this not be murdered on the spot(I wouldn't murder anyone fir a Mox…anymore)?
This is something Wizards has never tackled in-story. The only thing in-game as powerful as the Moxes were the lodestones Urza created to power the Weatherlight. And Wizards has also made Lotus-Lites and Almost Moxes to whet the appetites of us new players, but few even approach these original beauties.
Thank you all for reading my article! It is greatly appreciated. If you enjoy it, tell your friends about me. And you can even tweet about my articles(I do: @AzoriusChris). Until next week! And as always, may Svyelun and her tides favor you.

Bitcoin Cash Hard Fork Debate Reconvenes After the Stress Test
Over the last few weeks, there’s been a heated discussion within the Bitcoin Cash (BCH) community concerning the scheduled November 15 hard fork. There’s a strong disagreement between the BCH development teams, Bitcoin ABC, Nchain, and Bitcoin Unlimited in regard to the hard fork’s upcoming consensus changes. Fast forward to this week as Nchain has published the Bitcoin SV beta release, Coingeek’s Calvin Ayre speaks out against chain splitting rumors, and there have also been a few insightful studies done on Bitcoin ABC’s proposed canonical transaction ordering (CTOR) upgrade.

Nchain Launches Bitcoin SV Beta Version
Last week’s BCH Stress Test Day took everyone’s minds off of the ongoing upgrade debate taking place within the Bitcoin Cash community. It all started during the last week of July when Bitcoin ABC revealed the team’s roadmap and published the 0.18 ABC codebase in the second week of August. Nchain’s chief scientist Craig Wright was one of the first to oppose the upgrades proposed by the ABC team. Wright explained he was vehemently against adding the opcode called OP_CHECKDATASIG (CDS), and the implementation of canonical transaction ordering (CTOR). Wright detailed his team Nchain would create their own BCH full node client that would entail completely different upgrades within the codebase. Nchain disclosed the new client would be called Bitcoin SV (Satoshi’s Vision) and the full node client will restore the Satoshi opcodes OP_MUL, OP_LSHIFT, OP_RSHIFT, OP_INVERT, remove the 201 opcode script limit, and increase the base block size to 128MB.
About a week and a half ago BCH miners, developers, and industry leaders met in Bangkok to try and hash out the differences, but the meeting didn’t pay off with any compromise between the disagreeing camps. At the time Nchain also launched the Bitcoin SV alpha release and revealed a new mining pool dedicated to the SV codebase. Now, this week Nchain has released the Bitcoin SV beta version on Github. Observers have noted that there was some newly added code related to the 128M increase, some revised release documentation, and some other minor changes.
Coingeek & Calvin Ayre: We Will Fight Any Attempts by Anyone That Cause a Chain Split
Coingeek’s Calvin Ayre.
On Monday, September 10 Calvin Ayre, owner of the blockchain firm and mining pool Coingeek, explained in a recent post that his company will not allow a hash war to split the BCH chain. Ayre emphasizes that his firm has never had the intention of splitting the true version of Bitcoin (BCH).
“We will fight any attempts by anyone else to cause a chain split,” Ayre details. “Coingeek and friends believe in the Satoshi Vision for the evolution of Bitcoin and that means all disputes should be settled by Nakamoto consensus and miner hash elections.”
Nakamoto consensus dictates that at all times the longest chain (with the most Proof-of-Work) shall prevail and this will be respected at all times by Coingeek media and mining.
Ayre believes other “contentious, untested and unnecessary protocol changes” have recently been introduced to the BCH community, placing a lot of blame on the Chinese mining firm Bitmain Technologies. The Coingeek owner says Bitmain seeks “to constantly experiment with the protocol creating constant instability and driving corporate investment away.” Bitmain has denied all of the Wormhole security issues and CTOR allegations in a recent blog post addressing these accusations. Ayre says he and Coingeek are quite confident that in the end, smart miners will not follow a path towards their own annihilation.
Coingeek is confident that no miners are stupid enough to support a path that leads to their own destruction so we are also confident that this election will be won by the miners and will prove the wisdom of Satoshi Vision.
Some Examinations of CTOR
Lastly, there’s been a lot of insightful studies concerning the CTOR upgrade proposed for November. A post on r/btc gives a comprehensive technical dive into the implementation of canonical transaction ordering. Many developers such as Andrew Stone, Peter Rizun, and Amaury Sechet discussed the topic within the post’s comment section.
According to the study, CTOR could theoretically benefit ideas like Graphene and possibly help with the mempool bottleneck. The author of the post explains, “In the last stress test, we also saw limitations on mempool performance (tx acceptance and relaying). I hope both of these fronts see optimizations before the next stress test, so that a fresh set of bottlenecks can be revealed.”
Many people including BU’s lead developer Andrew Stone, and the mining pool Rawpool have released studies on CTOR this week. Bitcoin ABC published the “Benefits of Canonical Transaction Order” on August 17.
Further, the BCH mining pool Rawpool has also published a review of CTOR this week. Rawpool’s study is insightful and details that the mining pool has been testing the new upgrade. Essentially Rawpool details that the current method the Bitcoin protocol uses right now is topical transaction ordering (TTOR). However, the study says that in time it “cannot be denied” that “traditional TTOR sorting will inevitably face problems such as rising memory overhead and increasing computing time.”
“On the other hand, the fully optimized CTOR ordering should be a completely new data maintenance system, which is bound to have considerable complexity,” Rawpool’s translated research explains.
Rawpool will continue to communicate with the development teams of Bitcoin ABC and Nchain. The deployment of test nodes has been completed and will actively participate in the testing of new upgrades and stress testing throughout the network.
For Now, the BCH November Upgrade Debate Still Remains Unsettled
There’s been a lot of discussions and debates regarding the November 15th BCH upgrade. Bitcoin Unlimited’s lead developer has also critiqued canonical ordering in a post that declares “ABC’s CTOR will not scale.” Stone says that there are two significant problems with CTOR and he explains the sharding proposal (scaling by distributing data to multiple machines) “will not work,” and “lexicographical transaction ordering is unnecessary.” Moreover, Nchain’s Craig Wright has been writing a lot of long-form posts about this subject and generalized Bitcoin topics concerning the technology’s economics nearly every single day.
For now, it seems the debate will continue, and Bitcoin Cash proponents will have to wait to find out what will happen when it gets closer to the upgrade. News.Bitcoin.com will be sure to keep our readers informed every step of the way.
What do you think about the BCH November upgrade debate? Do you think the disagreeing parties will come to a compromise? Let us know in the comment section below.

For those of you who didn’t know, the Creative Team on Dominaria made a reference to every single other Dominaria set hidden in flavor text and names. This is…most of them. I’m sure I’m missing a couple. I only grabbed one reference to each set (certain sets like Ice Age are mentioned across multiple cards). The only stretch is The Antiquities War, which ISN’T the Antiquities card, it’s actually the entire Urza’s Saga block. Firstly, what the card actually does makes sense with Urza’s Destiny and Urza’s Legacy. And, of course, the card itself is a Saga (URZA’s Saga). ½

My latest blog post from the cosy dragon: Interview with E. A. Barker
An Interview with E. A. Barker, author of Ms. Creant: The Wrong Doers!
  E. A. Barker believes he is an average guy in mid-life who has led a mostly average life. His readers may not agree with his assessment. The single biggest difference between him and most other people is his pursuit of knowledge. Throughout his life he never stopped asking the simplest question: Why? E. A. describes himself as a collector of ideas and a purveyor of dot connections. He attempts to present his findings in an entertaining fashion in an effort to encourage people to read—especially men who are reading far too little these days. E. A is an advocate of education for its ability to affect social reform and actively promotes the idea that a global conscience is possible.
COZY DRAGON INTERVIEW
Everyone has a ‘first novel’, even if many of them are a rough draft relegated to the bottom and back of your desk drawer (or your external hard-drive!). Have you been able to reshape yours, or have you abandoned it for good?
(E. A. laughs.) It’s crap! I write narrative non-fiction partially because my ability to write quality dialog is so lacking in my opinion. I am reasonably certain I am at least decent at what I do. Ms. Creant ‘s mission was to challenge the beliefs of the reader so that we might change and grow as humans. This is a niche which I believe best suits my abilities.
Some authors are able to pump out a novel a year and still be filled with inspiration. Is this the case for you, or do you like to let an idea percolate for a couple of years in order to produce a quality book?
I admire prolific writers who can produce quality works time and time again. For me, it does not come so easily. I suppose my percolation happens during the extensive research phase, which in the case of this book, represented a one year period.
I have heard of writers that could only write in one place – then that cafe closed down and they could no longer write! Where do you find yourself writing most often, and on what medium (pen/paper or digital)?
Wow. Your first sentence supports my working theory that we writers are merely scribes channeling the thoughts of some other entity. This is probably not the place to get all weirdly metaphysical so I will move on to the question at hand. I can write wherever I can make my body comfortable and where there is little distraction or noise. Paper notes always litter my workspace, if not the entire room, until such time as they are compiled by section into my trusty old HP laptop.
Before going on to hire an editor, most authors use beta-readers. How do you recruit your beta-readers, and choose an editor? Are you lucky enough to have loving family members who can read and comment on your novel?
I have never been clear on how the literary world uses some terminology. My scientific background tells me to speak of alpha readers first. To me, the process is as follows: 1) I produce a very rough draft which is then read by alpha readers whose sole job it is to blow sunshine up my butt so that I can find the courage to continue. In my case, it was my hairdresser. 2) I then read, revised, re-read, revised . . .  until I realized I was stuck in an endless loop and had to seek professional help. 3) Enter my editor—who I picture in my head as Ilsa of the SS—she is what I believe to be my beta-reader. Laura had no trouble telling me how I had gone off course (content editing); nor did she lose any sleep over pointing out my embarrassing grammatical errors; and I believe she rejoiced in highlighting the literally thousands of typos and punctuation errors. This is what makes her good. Her ability to completely devastate any ego the writer in you had developed, will either force you to be better, or quit. Badly shaken, I chose the former. I made massive revisions which fleshed out ideas, supplied answers, and ultimately resulted in three additional chapters. The most observant of readers might see where I ended the book on three separate occasions. She was recruited by writing a cheque. 4) The gamma reader was my proof-reader who line edited (a.k.a. copy edited) the manuscript prior to publication. She only found another five hundred or so mistakes in punctuation as well as missing words I just could not see when I read those sentences. She was recruited through a negotiated exchange of services and the promise of a signed hardcover.
I walk past bookshops and am drawn in by the smell of the books – ebooks simply don’t have the same attraction for me. Does this happen to you, and do you have a favourite bookshop? Or perhaps you are an e-reader fan… where do you source most of your material from?
I LOVE PAPER BOOKS! It is easy to understand people who like digital books though; they can buy books for far less money and could carry their entire library with them at all times. There is a danger that we should be discussing in the digital revolution we are in the midst of. I USE LIBRARIES to source most information. Libraries have always been the keepers and conservators of knowledge. Budget cutbacks combined with limited shelf space are leading many libraries into e-book information technology systems where the librarian will no longer be the curator. Whosoever controls “the cloud” will then control all knowledge. We must continue to encourage a balance between paper and digital books or we risk quickening our fall into a dystopian nightmare.
Oh my! Asking an author if they have a favorite bookstore is leading them to potential career suicide. ANY bookstore that carries or recommends Ms. Creant: The Wrong Doers! is a favorite of mine. I do however frequent a local used bookshop in the Beaches area of Toronto near my home.
I used to find myself buying books in only one genre (fantasy) before I started writing this blog. What is your favourite genre, and do you have a favourite author who sticks in your mind from:
childhood? Jules Verne
adolescence? Frank Herbert
young adult? Robert Heinlein
adult? Hemingway? I am now trying to read the greats across previously unexplored genres including poetry—something I would never have done when I was younger.
Social media is a big thing, much to my disgust! I never have enough time myself to do what I feel is a good job. What do you do?
Social media is a massive time suck that keeps us from writing. I would like a PA to take it over but I have yet to have a quality unpaid one offer to do so.
This is my approach:
Facebook is number one in terms of users. If you are willing to track people down and stay engaged with them, it can be powerful. Therein lies the time suck factor—engagement. Facebook goes out of their way to minimize your reach. Only 3 to 7% of your friends and followers will see some of your posts regularly.
Twitter is second in terms of users; limited in terms of post length, but UNLIMITED in terms of reach—all your followers and all selected hash-tags receive your posts, you can tweet @ anyone on twitter and they do not put you in jail for over engagement.
I tweet daily and send the tweet to both my facebook profile and my author page. In theory you could do this in 30 minutes per day but you would not have the all important needed engagement with other people.
Not long ago, I found statistics which clearly showed you really only need to be engaging on Fridays and Saturdays. This opens the door to time suck savings by posting (a.k.a. updating status) each day, but engaging just on those two days.
Understanding the value of any marketing effort is often difficult to measure in immediate sales—social media is epitome of this. After two years of working social media an average of three hours per day, seven days a week, 360ish days per year, I will tell you its value cannot be measured monetarily. When I attempt to do this, the numbers make me feel foolish.
$0.03 is what I have been paid per hour.
30 minutes is invested in each follower.
Followers rarely buy your book but about 1% will.
You will get 0.1% response from a twitter campaign.
My RATIONALIZATION for continuing at all is I committed to this for two years–one year leading up to this release (the building phase), and one year of promoting the book after release. I assure you there will be a massive scaling down of social media work once the book has its first birthday.
So what are the positives?
You gain a handful of digital pen pals from around the world—priceless.
A good percentage of initial sales and reviews will come from people you meet on facebook.
It is the digital equivalent of flyer distribution and it is free, if you do not count your time.

E-mail campaigns have netted the greatest amount of interest thus far with about a 10% response rate. This is literally 100 times better than social media and introverts can do it.

Attend book fairs and sell signed copies.
Public speaking is always an opportunity to sell books.
Pitch indie bookstores and other merchants on buying or displaying consignment copies of your book.
Send out review copies to literary critics. Most will not give you the time of day, but just one published positive review from these people can make a career.

Answering interview questions can often take a long time! Tell me, are you ever tempted to recycle your answers from one to the next?
Your questions were thought provoking and multifaceted so I could not cheat. We are faced with some stock questions which cause us to reiterate answers. I have yet to copy and paste an answer, but who knows what the future may bring.
Ms. Creant: The Wrong Doers!
This book was created for everyone from young adults to seniors. It was written from a male’s point of view, speaking to men who are endlessly struggling to understand the opposite sex. For women, this is a fascinating journey inside the male psyche. The book gives a young reader a glimpse of the future, with a recommended time-line for key life events. Mature readers, who have already experienced much of what is discussed in the book, should come away with a new found understanding and perhaps even closure. Ms. Creant is a controversial, entertaining, yet informative look at everything which influences human behaviour including: relationships, life, health, biology, philosophy, sociology, theology, politics, genetics—even physics. E. A. Barker shares twenty-four “inappropriate” stories of life with women. The author based these stories of women behaving badly on his real life experiences, spanning four decades of his search for an ideal partner. The lessons taken away from the book will serve to help readers make better choices, become more aware, grow and change—at any stage of life.
