“I Am YEG Arts” Series: Luwam Kiflemariam, Executive Director of the 124 Street & Area Business Association

All is about to get a little brighter this November 20th. If you love the 124 Street community, you know exactly what we���re talking about—All Is Bright is back and ready to celebrate the winter season by lighting up 124 Street with illumination, live music, street performers, family-friendly activities, and so much more. Though the beloved annual event is a celebration of winter, it’s also a celebration of community—the artists, makers, and independent retailers who call the district home and the 124 Street Business Association that advocates for them. Leading that advocacy is the BIA’s Executive Director, Luwam Kiflemariam. A life-long supporter of Edmonton and community, she’s taken on the role enthusiastically, bringing with her a great depth of expertise and personal commitment. Relationship-builder, community advocate, and champion of a good nap—this week’s “I Am Yeg Arts” story belongs to Luwam Kiflemariam.

Tell us about your connection to Edmonton and why you make it your home.

My family moved to Edmonton when I was nine years old, and I have been calling it home since then. I love Edmonton and the opportunities available here. I’ve travelled but have never seriously considered moving away, as Edmonton is home.

How did you become involved with the 124 Street Business Association?

I’ve always known about 124 Street Business Association and the work it does through my volunteering work with the Oliver Community League. When I learned that the 124 Street BIA was looking for a new Executive Director, I jumped at a chance to be part of the organization. The opportunity to be part of shaping the 124 Street area excited me, as this area has great potential to become a vital and even more exciting part of Edmonton.

You’ve been described as a relationship-builder. What doors do relationships open, and when did that become clear to you?

In the past, I’ve worked with great organizations like the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation and the MS Society, where building relationships was an important part of the role. Relationship-building is not about “what can you do for me,” rather it’s about learning about the other person and figuring out where your values align so that you can both work towards accomplishing it.

Tell us a little about what makes the 124 Street community special to you and the city.

124 Street is one of the best areas in Edmonton to take a stroll and discover cool spots to eat, shop, and be inspired. It’s a charming area, home to the Art District, specialty and antique stores, fashion boutiques, indie coffee houses, and fabulous eateries.

What does community mean to you, and where do you find it?

Community is that deep understanding in your core that you belong, and from that sense of belonging you are safe to be who you truly are. I’ve found community in lots of different places—from family and friends to volunteering for the Oliver Community League.

What new All Is Bright programming can people look forward to this year?

This year, in addition to the live music, roving street performers, and firepits, we have a second location on 103 Avenue and 124 Street, where we will be hosting an Indigenous Pavilion where Fort Edmonton Park, Metis Nation of Alberta, and IAM–Indigenous Artist Market will be located.

The shop local movement has resonated with many consumers this past year. How does that support translate to artists and business owners? What are three easy things people can do to support the community this holiday season?

Over 90% of the business that belong to the 124 Street & Area Business Association are locally owned. In fact, if you go into a lot of the shops/restaurants on 124 Street, you have a high chance of being helped/served by the owners themselves. Shopping local has meant that those businesses are able to survive and withstand all the havoc COVID has brought into our lives.

What excites you most about this year’s All Is Bright event and festival season in general?

I’m excited to see the streets come alive with people enjoying the event and each other.

Describe your perfect day in Edmonton. How do you spend it?

A perfect day in Edmonton always includes a breakfast at a local restaurant with family or friends, a walk outside, checking out a show or event that’s happening, a few chapters of whatever book I’m reading, and always getting in a nap.

What kind of city do you hope to help Edmonton become?

A vibrant and diverse city, one where people are excited to work, live, and play.
