(not even gunna anon this) 17. “I’m saying this out of love… but that looks horrendous.” Mingli
“I say this out of love,” Nie Mingjue says from behind her and Jiang Yanli startles, the roll of gauze almost falling out of her hand as she turns to look at him, “but that looks horrendous.” She flushes as he says it, her shoulders going tight.
The bandaging on her own hand was misplaced and oddly bunched in places, small patches of pink burned skin peeking through the areas that hadn’t been wrapped properly. “I’m used to having two hands for this.” Jiang Yanli excuses herself lightly as he comes to kneel in front of her, though it barely does a thing to make him smaller.
“You mean you’re used to doing this for other people.” He corrects her, one hand coming to rest on her knee and the other open and waiting for the roll of gauze, “May I wrap your wound, Lady Jiang?” Nie Mingjue asks, letting their fingers brush and linger as he takes the gauze from her, undoing what she’s already done and throwing away the gauze that can’t be reused.
“We’re married, shouldn’t you call me Madam?” Jiang Yanli smiles, teasing him right back and watching him work all at the same time. Nie Mingjue has barely made his second pass and the bandaging already looks better, covering her wound completely, but keeping his touch gentle for fear of hurting her.
It seems like he isn’t going to answer, too focused on his task, but then he’s glancing up and grinning at her, “You’re not prickly enough to be a madam, you burned yourself making boiled sweets for Huaisang.” The bandaging is tight, but not constrictive as Nie Mingjue finishes, tearing the gauze short and tying a knot in it before sweeping his thumb over her knuckles. “That doesn’t sound like something a strict madam of the house would do.”
“A-Sang’s told on me already?” Jiang Yanli asks, a giggle hanging onto the end of her voice as she allows herself to lean towards her husband, her fingers curling around his. “Even after I told him I was alright?”
“He told me what happened right after I asked him if he’d seen you.” Nie Mingjue snorts, his hand leaving her knee and finding it’s usual place on her cheek instead, thumb stroking just underneath her eye. “Are you alright?” Nie Mingjue’s voice is gentle as he asks and Jiang Yanli can’t begin to try and hide the smile on her face.
“I’m better now that I’ve been taken care of so well.” Jiang Yanli answers, setting her own free hand on Nie Mingjue’s jaw as she brushes her lips against his forehead.
“You’ll let me know when you’re ready to change the bandages?”
“I will.”

hello do u have any fantasy/scifi/dystopian books to recommend?? i love ur taste in books
UHHHH i’ve been reblogging posts about most of what i’m reading lately so none of this will probably come as a surprise, but off the top of my head......
The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula Le Guin made me cry and was easily the best book I’ve read so far this year. an ambassador from Earth (for some reason this is a cisgender guy) goes to planet full of genderless aliens to invite them to join a intergalactic league of worlds. there are politics, and of course some gender exploration (not perfect but still interesting), but mostly it’s an exploration of the human condition, like most of Grandma Ursula’s books. very good, also heartbreaking, with an enemies/rivals-to-lovers relationship in there, sort of. the first time I’ve liked an enemies/rivals-to-lovers anything tbh.
I just finished Graceling by Kristin Cashore and ngl it was dumb as shit at times but still kinda fun lol cause it had Prince Po who fulfills a lot of my favorite character tropes. it’s a YA fantasy/adventure/romance where people with heterochromia have “Graces” which are like superhuman abilities unique to the person. the main character has the grace of “killing” and for this reason has been used as a weapon all her life by her uncle the king. I’m reading the sequel right now which I think is a lot better so far and expands the world and character depth. there are a lot of POC, the protagonists are (mostly) WOC, and there’s some gender commentary about being a woman with power that isn’t really mind-blowing, tbh I found it kind of trite in the first book, but so far in the sequel I think it’s handled a bit more maturely. I hear the third book gets gud.
if you’re in an Avatar: The Last Airbender mood, I was surprised to enjoy The Rise of Kyoshi by FC Yee and I hear the sequel is as good or even better. it didn’t blow my mind—some things were predictable but others did surprise me at times. and I enjoy Kyoshi struggling her wants with her identity as an Avatar, a pursuer of justice, and also a killer.
the MaddAddam trilogy (Oryx and Crake, The Year of the Flood, and MaddAddam) by Margaret Atwood is probably one of my favorite dystopian books, or “speculative fiction” as she calls it. it’s near-future world where most people either live in corporate compounds provided to them by the companies they work for, or in poverty in half-flooded cities. most of the world is in need of resources. the books follow two parallel stories, one of what happens after a worldwide extinction event wipes out humanity, and the second of how society gets to that point. predictably, it’s a dark and unpleasant read. despite my enjoying it, I have a lot of mixed feelings about this series, it’s super weird on race (like most Atwood things I’ve read) and I didn’t like the last book at all, but I thought the first two were pretty good and enjoyable in a sick way, if you think you can stomach a story of where we might be in 20-30 years wrt climate change, capitalism, genetic modification, and scientific freedom gone rogue. it’s definitely a hard series to read. I feel like I need to give a disclaimer for why I like this one so SLIGHT SPOILERS: personally, I think of Oryx and Crake as like a typical “male” narrative of the apocalypse, where a regular guy who was there to witness the events of the End of Times ends up alone at the end and trying to rough it out by foraging a ruined land for supplies and living day by day, and I think of The Year of the Flood as a more typically “female” perspective, where the apocalypse just sort of happens to a regular woman and her community. then she—eventually they—have to find ways to deal with it and come together to think of surviving the future, not just each day. it’s not to say that one way is better than the other, but I think both perspectives combined make for a fuller view and YOTF really had a sort of light at the end of the tunnel that I found myself hoping for after reading OAC. (meanwhile, the last book.... I ignore it.)
the Murderbot series by Martha Wells is a delight and really funny. in the far-future where humans are exploring the galaxy, a security robot develops feelings and takes on bodyguard and mercenary work as it discovers how to be a person. I’m still not done (and the series is ongoing) but this is a pretty sweet, lighthearted read of a scifi future in which corporations are still awful and technology is still misused, but not everything is terrible and friends can still be made and robots have feelings for their charges.
looking back it is embarrassing how few books by WOC I have read this year, I am trying to rectify that. but also I’m glad in a way that I’m reading at all because this is the first year in a long time i have actually, like, read stuff that isn’t fanfic or comics? and that is entirely because this year I am working in a job that isn’t working me to the bone and have time to read at the end of the day, unlike the previous 4 years, so this list is not as long as I’d like it to be, but so far, the sixteen books I’ve read this year are a lot better than the total of one book I read in 2019, which was a Deadpool novel, so.
feel free to add me on goodreads btw

same, i love gay ships as much as the next wlw, and i hate the 'i see this gay ships as siblings' thing, but in this case... that's how it felt
yeah!!! and also like, let’s be real, kubo is far from perfect. after seeing what he did with Chizuru (making her the creepy, just-for-laughs lesbian, stalker-ish, caricature of a wlw), i’m.....very skeptical that he could actually pull off intentionally writing such a well thought-out and accurate representation

people be gay and loving gay ships (valid), plus lots of people horny for cartoons/animation (less valid), and partly because it’s fantasy they don’t have to extend their care to real people who have boundaries (less valid), and the kpop/bandoms don’t care cause they’re girls (extremely un valid)
kpop fandoms freak me out bc no one there has any respect for boundaries + the thought of how badly the idols are being treated but i feel like u can enjoy watching some girls killing it on the guitar and being like “wow im gay” without immediately being a freak out it BUT MAYBE THATS ASKING TOO MUCH

what really Gets Me is that people love—like LOVE—to send me these types of messages and then it makes me backtrack through my recent posts and check myself and usually on a regular day it goes something like this: edit, wip, #raven rambles, reblogging someones edit with love & positive comments, something tongue-in-cheek about the community/ea/simmers whatever, normal ass reply to an anon with hearts and shit, #raven rambles, post pointing out some bullshit, maybe another #raven rambles, wip.
and for the most part that’s fine! people (usually) don’t bother me then!
but like god forbid i wanna talk about something that makes people upset and don’t shit out rainbows like god forbid i post two consecutive Posts Pointing Out Some Bullshit bc then that makes me this big bad aggressive meanie pants who never ever posts anything positive and needs to learn how to be nicer #no offence. Like I’ll sit here and get excited about a wip or an edit or some love from an anon but none of that means SHIT if I say one (1) Bad Thing and like?? It's sad that that is literally all they see amidst the good shit I do put out there but I'm soooo over people and how they perceive my blog!

Hey dude I’m sorry. Your original post while a little insensitive in that it kinda glossed over the graveness of what surrounds this holiday had your heart in the right place and people are being too hard on you
Thank you. I just want everyone who may have been offended to know that I didn’t intend to offend anyone, I just wanted to send my well wishes to my followers while making a point not to ignore that Thanksgiving is based on the most horrific series of events in American history. I didn’t do it in a manner that many felt was appropriate enough and that’s my fault.

Im with you, while the gay part of me appreciates some aspects of the skin, it leaves an awul taste in my mouth that Widow gets like, no autonomy on different layers. On one layer she already doesn't have autonomy as she's given a sexualized design by the writers. "BUT SHE CHOSE THAT OUTFIT", uhm, she's a character, written and designed by males. She doesn't have autonomy. And on ANOTHER level, her autonomy as a character was taken by talon? So like... she really has NONE at all, on any level.
^^^^^^^^^
#this will be the last thing i post about this because it perfectly summarizes my feelings#and i already have people sending me anons trying to pick a fight with me over my opinion#i'll delete most of the other posts about it#sorry for the spam#alliecatstrophe

I think my favorite scene is when butch see's how buttercup looks on stage, it was such like an eye-opening moment for him, even if he didn't know what it meant, something really changed and it was such a "holy shit" moment for me
The scenes where Butch develops any kind of awareness about Buttercup and himself are always so arresting. For him, everything stops as realization hits him, and it’s just great.

“Tell me you didn’t steal someones dog.”
+”May need you to bail me out of jail”
Brigitte hadn’t even thought about where she’d been throwing her phone when she’d gotten home from the mission, she’d been too tired, too worn down to think about anything other than burying herself under the blankets and muting the rest of the world from underneath her pillow. But now the damn thing was vibrating somewhere too close to her head for her to ignore it.
“This is Brigitte.” Comes out heavy and thick with sleep once she gets a hold of her phone, nearly dropping it twice. Dragging herself up, Brigitte can hear voices in the background, but she doesn’t recognize any. It gives her hope that the world won’t need saving again this soon, but then Fareeha’s voice is coming out the other end and Brigitte almost drops her phone again.
“Don’t freak out, but I may need you to bail me out of jail.” The number Brigitte didn’t recognize makes sense now, but the rest of it didn’t. Fareeha could usually reel any situation in before it came to getting arrested.
“Tell me you didn’t steal someone’s dog again.” Brigitte is swinging her legs over the side of the bed now, shoving her feet into her shoes and pushing her hair out of her face with an exhausted smile. “You remember what happened last time.” She hadn’t had to bail Fareeha out, but she did have to set her broken nose and talk an angry owner off the ledge.
“Big talk for someone who got caught picking locks to let cats back into their homes in the middle of the night.” Brigitte can hear stubbornness rising up in Fareeha’s voice and it only makes her smile become a little more fond when she knows it shouldn’t. Fareeha was the one who taught her how to pick locks in the first place, though at the time, Fareeha had been showing off and trying to impress her and Brigitte acted like she didn’t know that.
“Stay out of trouble, I’ll be down soon.” The two of them could fight about it in the morning after she’d gotten Fareeha back to her apartment for the night.

Not sure if you did already but Liara?
How I feel about this character: I should like Liara more than I do, but I think a bit of writer misuse (love that she becomes the Shadow Broker and is super confident and competent, I don’t even mind the jump from 1 to 2 in personality, but they don’t really do anything with the SB in 3)
All the people I ship romantically with this character: after damalur mentioned it, I kinda see her with Ashley? it’s difficult sometimes for me to see her with Shepard because they really play up the ‘inexperienced girl with a hero crush’ thing and that’s not really my thing. for Shep/Liara I’d just mentally rewrite ME1
My non-romantic OTP for this character: Ashley, Shep, all the other biotics on the squad
My unpopular opinion about this character: i find her voice very odd. i’m not sure if it’s the actress or the performance but for some reason it just sounds to me like not the way someone would normally talk. i’m honestly not sure and i feel weird trying to articulate it
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: wish they had done something with her being the shadow broker in 3! by “done something” i mean, like, something more interesting? lol she has all this information at her fingertips, it wouldve been neat to do something related to it. espionage stuff. or hearing about stuff before it happens. would’ve been cool if we had found out about the leviathan through liara

wow i stopped reading a while ago but seeing masaki it really shows how many similarities she has with orihime, the weird thing with food, the kind of air headed attitude, the love for simple things and being out there, the faking smiles to go cry alone even the aunt obsessed with schooling lol... it's all there
YUP, and the nervous little “heheh” laugh. She was like a tornado of awkward and cute and babbling and loud and Isshin just kind of watched her in disbelief but was also hopelessly endeared and couldn’t help but to fall for her (sound familiar ? 😌)
#the similarities were definitely noticeable as soon as that chapter dropped#but then we were told ''she's just faking that personality!! we'll see the REAL masaki next chapter and she'll be much more like rukia!''#and....well#*sad violin*#alliecatstrophe#asks
