Dragon Age: Origins is still great today, and you should give it a try
I want to preface this post with an important disclaimer: I am not about gatekeeping, and I think that ultimately, you should play or skip whatever Dragon Age games you want. If even after this post you feel like Dragon Age: Origins just isn’t for you, that’s fine! That doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy the Dragon Age media you do want to consume, and it certainly doesn’t mean you’re any less valid a fan. But I personally adore Dragon Age: Origins to this day, and I would love to see more modern gamers give it a chance, despite it being from 2009.
It’s a great introduction to the world of Thedas
Dragon Age: Origins had the tall order of being the first in a potential franchise, yet it climbed those heights and beyond. It perfectly balances the need to explain the world setting and tell a story within that world at the same time, by organizing the plot into puzzle pieces. You, the protagonist, have to recruit different factions into your cause to save the kingdom of Ferelden, so each piece of the game has a different focus on those factions. It spoon-feeds the player information at an easy to understand and absorb pace.
Dragon Age: Origins also makes good use of codex entries for those of you who are big lore buffs and want even more information. Yet at the same time, it does not overly rely on the codex; all the most crucial parts of the lore that you need to know are included in your interactions with characters and plot.
The player gets to shape the story
The nature of those puzzle pieces also means that you have huge control over the story from start to finish, because the puzzle itself is shaped by you! The outcomes of each piece form the blueprint of the climax. The end of the game is reactive to the choices you make in the story throughout. (Mind you, a lot of those choices have been retconned in later games, but still, within the confines of Dragon Age: Origins itself, it’s still fun to see the outcomes of your decisions.)
The story itself is great
I would consider Dragon Age: Origins to have the most straightforward premise of all the Dragon Age games released thus far, with a strong identity linking the different main quests all together. You are a newly recruited Grey Warden, left to unite Ferelden against the big bad Blight after 99% of the Order within the nation is wiped out in a catastrophic battle. You may get caught up in dwarven politics, ancient curses, demonic possession, and plenty more along the way, but no matter where you find yourself, your motivation always falls back to that ultimate responsibility.
The characters are also great
Almost all the companions you’re able to collect along the way are very easy to love, or at least appreciate them for what they are.
Alistair is also a new grey warden. He is struggling with grief over the loss of his mentor, and the weight of having no control over his identity his whole life.
Morrigan is a witch who grew up isolated in the woods with no one but her abusive mother for company. Now she must learn to interact with others, and dependant on the player, perhaps even make a friend, lover… or enemy.
Leliana is a bard from Orlais, whose faith told her to assist the grey warden plight. But beneath the demure outward appearance, she has a much darker past she’s running away from.
Sten is a Qunari warrior who was taught that outside his culture, everything is backwards and nonsense, but he cannot return home until he has restored his soul by recovering his lost sword. Along the way, he may learn to appreciate or despise Ferelden.
Zevran was enslaved by the Antivan Crows as a child and made into an assassin. If the player can chip away at his nonchalant mask, they will find his past has left a lot more scars on him than he thought it safe to admit.
Wynne is a mage from the Circle who is struggling to deal with the nature of age, death, and life purpose.
Shale is a golem who was once under complete and total control by her former master, now learning what it’s like to be free, and wanting to uncover her forgotten past before losing that freedom.
Oghren is there too, unfortunately.
And the player character really feels like they are of your own creation. The choices you make, little and small, offer a lot to shape whatever kind of protagonist you want. Additionally, the benefit of starting the game with a different origin, and playing out that origin before getting recruited into the grey wardens, offers a lot of prompting to get into the roleplay!
The datedness can be easily upgraded with modding anyway
Do you find the combat clunky? There’s mods for that. Do you find the graphics too bland? There’s mods for that. Do you wish you could kiss Alistair as a man or Morrigan as a woman? There’s mods for that, too. Dragon Age: Origins is very easy to mod; most of them you just drop the files into your override folder and start playing. Otherwise, you use the DA Modder app for DAZIP files, which is also not that complicated.
A lot of people consider Skyrim to be dated without mods, too. I personally don’t think there’s anything wrong with appreciating the ability to mod a game, as a positive point.
If you want to play, make sure you use LAA though!
Large Address Aware is a must-have on PC for Dragon Age: Origins.
For GoG or EA App/Origin users: You can just run LAA like normal!
For Steam users: You need THIS first

Chapter One / Masterlist
Steve had to admit that Caine had really changed it all around in the months he has taken over. His pack was more relaxed and open, no longer living with the fear of a crazy Alpha. Steve watched his Little One pausing every now and then to greet a former pack mate while he simply stayed nearby watching You interact with your old pack mates. Even though he knew You still carried connections with them, it wasn't the same because now you were his. You constantly danced back to him, your body seeing his reassuring touch, either taking his hand once more to weave your fingers with his or slipping under his shirt to press your palm to his back. It was all about the connection, You and the Little Wolf always establishing that bond. Steve felt a calmness wash over him at your desire to remain close. Every time a soft praising rumble would rise from him making you pleased.
Soon Caine and Kat found the two of you “Welcome back, thinking about staying here Y/N?” The woman teased as she loped her arm through yours on the opposite of Steve. You scoffed with a shake of your head.
“And give up all the work I did with him? Hell no.” You joked, patting Steve's chest and smirking up at him. He growled in a mock warning and nipped at your nose before letting You go with a nudge, which you split off with Kat, going to catch up. Steve and Caine watched the women for a moment till Caine broke the silence.
“This is a side I have never seen of Y/N, it's good.” Caine observed in which Steve turned his attention from You leaving him and cleared his throat.
“Well I'm sure she has the same observations as all of you. Not living in fear will work wonders. The whole pack looks pretty good. While we were walking around, everyone is so content here. Have nothing but to say how good an Alpha you are.”
Caine gave almost a youthful excited look at the comment before clearing his throat to gain his composure in the other Alphas presence.
<I like this kid.> The Wolf yipped in Steve’s mind and Steve had to agree, knowing just how dedicated Caine was to his pack, even when he was nothing more than a captive.
I do too, and Y/N trusts him.
“Well thank you Steve, that means a lot. We deserve to just be a pack, a real and proper one. That was actually kinda why I sent Y/N a text inviting you two over. You see Ross has been sending members here, trying to talk to me about the Accords.”
Steve rumbled slightly at the mention of Ross. He hadn't seen the council member since you ran him off last fall. And that was just fine by Steve, he already made it known that he wanted nothing to do with the Accords nor would be signing them to give up part of his control of his pack to the council.
“And what do you think about them Caine? I’m sure they left a copy for you to read over.” he questioned, and Caine gave a slight wrinkle of his forehead considering how to answer the question.
“Well, part of me wants to, as all of this to take care of seems almost overwhelming at times. I want nothing but the best for my Pack, but giving up the rights to finalize choices, letting the Council be able to override my decisions? Seems dangerous to give it up. They claim it's to further protect our safety, especially if an Alpha loses his sanity. Ross claims that is what happened to Pierce, was corrupted by Hydra and that nothing could be properly done, as Pierce had every right to do what he wanted being the Alpha.”
“Yeah fucking bullshit. Pierce never should have been an Alpha. I don’t know how he managed it.” Steve growled out angrily at Caine’s words. “And that supposed Council had everything they needed to step in, they just didn’t. They were waiting to see where Pierce could lead them, at the innocent wolves expense.” Steve shook his head, the Wolf now pacing in agitation for his human counterpart. Caine nodded in agreement.
“What I thought as well when the Senator was trying to feed me this. I told him I would think about it. But I don't think that this is the best thing for us. We are still trying to recover and it's just hard to trust anyone right now. Giving up as Alpha, it just seems to go against our very nature.”
“Go with what you feel in your gut Caine.” Steve said. “You know what is the best thing to do for your wolves, they trust you for a reason.” The new Alpha looked relieved at Steve, that he was actually doing the right thing after a lifetime of his family being mistreated.
Soldat jumped out of the van Clint managed to hot wire, switching vehicles every couple hundred miles in case they were being followed. The Alpha they had collected groaned as Soldat yanked on the chain, Pietro pushing her forward from behind. Soldat never even bothered to learn her name.
Her name didn't matter, she was just the mission.
The White Wolf licked his muzzle hungrily, eyeing the Alpha, feeling the challenge her Wolf’s presence brought. But she was subdued, after killing her mate, all fight in her left. It broke her. She followed behind Soldat obediently as Brock unlocked the door to the warehouse, dragging her in.
“A female this time.” Brock gripped her face, twisting it so she had to look at him, his sneer growing wider as it roamed up and down her, Alanna rolling her eyes from behind him.
“Not much of a looker if you ask me. How did she get to be Alpha?”
Brock ripped his fingers away from her face, jerking her head back. “Not all Alpha’s are built on strength. But they are weaker, easier to control. Isn't that right Sweetheart. Put her in the back... there's a free cage back there for her. Oh and Soldat, enjoy yourself with her… she's a fine piece of tail.”
Soldat didn't say anything, just grabbed the chain he was using to lead her and tug her away with him, the rest of the team dispersed to unload the van of their equipment and dispense of it.
Alanna cocked her head as she watched Soldat leave with their latest Alpha. “Why do you do that? Offer him those Alphas like he will actually take you up on it. If you want him to get laid, why not just order it?”
Brock watched before he turned to Alanna. “He’s programmed to only fuck his mate, if he ever chooses one, then we know. Another way to control him.”
“You really believe in that crock of shit? Soulmates?” Alanna snorted out and Brock snapped his teeth at her.
“I see Rogers was quick to drop you without a regret and he went halfway around the world leaving his pack behind to save his new mate.” He challenged her and Alanna snarled at him, her rage flaring at the mention of her former partner.
“Fuck you Brock.”
“Later Sweetheart, I got more important shit to do.” His hand whipped out and snatched her by the back of her neck, twisting till Alanna yelled in pain. “Don't you forget who owns your ass now Bitch, you got the pretty scar to prove it.” He dropped her to scramble at his feet while he stepped away, leaving her wiping her face dry from the tears of pain he caused, composing herself.
Brock whistled a cheery tune as he followed along after Soldat to see if he was going to take him up on his offer or not.
When Soldat shoved the Alpha in, Brock came up next to him, pulling out his phone to snap a picture of her to file away for later.
“Good work, I have another one for you to go for. Coordinates are already pinged to your device. This one should be easy for you, he is fairly new and you’ve met him before.” Soldat dug out his own device and pulled up the file, a picture of a younger man paired along with a black wolf, both man and beast shown. “Collect him and bring him here, kill off as many of the pack as you can.”
Soldat frowned a bit looking at it, studying it when he felt a haze of a memory rise up. Several people mingling in a hotel room, people he didn't recognize and a voice coming from nearby.
“If Natasha and Bucky hadn’t come… Thank You, to all of you.” The Black Wolf he was looking at right now laying on a bed looking like he had just been through a fight, panting heavily.
“It was the least we could do, I’m sorry we didn’t know earlier.” The same voice he had heard calling to him days before when retrieving the Alpha. The White Wolf shook his head aggravated and Brock's voice sharpened suddenly.
“Soldat! ANSWER ME.”
“Yes Sir, we will head out right away.”
It was much later when you returned with Kat. Caine and Steve were sharing beers with other wolves, talking about general stuff, Steve doing his best to answer questions, explaining how he made his pack an asset to the community, bringing in income to the sleepy town below there mountain. It all felt like back at home, that you quickly settled back in. You sidled up to Steve's side, which his hand rubbed at your side and he dropped a kiss to your temple. “Thought I was going to have to go look for you, Little One.” He chuckled and you grinned up at him, taking his beer from his hand and sipping from it.
“Like you didn't know where I was the whole time.” You scoffed and Steve shrugged, it was true. With your bond, as long as you two were nearby, it wasn't hard for either of you to find the other. The wolves easily slipped back and forth along that shared bond, tangling together in greeting and breaking out in play as you lightly nipped at Steve’s chest when you turned into him, pressing against his chest as he tightened his arm around you.
“Sure I did, doesn't mean I didn't want to go find you and drag you away all for myself.” His voice husked in your ear, a flattening of his palm against your lower back pressed your hips into his and you could feel exactly why.
Your hand smoothed against his pecs as you turned around, leaning back against his chest and taking another sip of the beer before giving it back to him. Steve's arm slung around your waist loosely while he nipped gently against your mark, making you tilt your head for him with a satisfied sigh before focusing once more on the small group milling around.
“Would you consider coming back Y/N?” someone asked, a woman named Tess that you knew vaguely from the short amount of time she was for sale. Steve growled lowly at the question and you chuckled while pushing your hair back to flash your neck.
“Most certainly not. You all will always be family, but I’m bonded with Steve now. My home is with him and where we decide to go together. Right now as Alpha, we’re staying in the mountains.” You stated and you felt Steve shuffle behind you, speaking up as well.
“As long as your Alpha is fine with us visiting, Y/N will come back whenever she wants to. I know you all are her family and wouldn't ever ask her to push that away.” You could feel your Little Wolf howling to her mate, the satisfied warmth of her happiness flooding through you and you couldn't feel more content then you were right now.
Caine was nearby, nuzzling up to Kat in a sneaky way. The two of them teasing at the edge of the group when suddenly Caine seemed to realize that the attention was on them from the others in the group.
“Of course, Y/N, this is your home whenever you want to come. As well as any of your pack.” He cleared his throat. Kat hid her face a bit, trying not to give them away.
“Thanks Caine.” You are quick to answer, deciding then that it was time to pull you and Steve away for the night, which made you twist to face him. “What do you say Alpha, ready to call it a night? I got something I want to show you.”
Steve arched a brow at you, seeing how you were biting your lip and giving him a playful look. He gave a wave of his hand as you ran your fingers along his stomach through his shirt, pulling away from him, making him choke back a growl at the loss of your touch. “Nice meeting you all, see you tomorrow.” he said before walking stiff legged away. The rest of the wolves chuckled among one another at him trying to not be obvious.
You sprinted ahead while Steve was saying goodbye, well away from the group now and sliding into the darkness of twilight quickly taking over and making the shade under the trees almost dark as night now. You could hear Steve quickly catching up to you, which made you put on a burst of speed. You weren't going back to the little cabin you two were calling home for the night. You wanted to play, wide awake and ready for your Alpha. Darting into the woods, you picked up speed to put more distance between you two and cupped your hands together around your mouth to give a soft howl, enticing him to come find you, hunt you down. The Little Wolf filled your mind, your eyes glimmering yellowed in the low light as you darted away from where you could hear Steve.
<You keep crashing like this, he will find us in no time.>
Well that is the point.
The Little Wolf’s laughter filled your senses as you darted around a tree trunk, your hands pressing against the rough bark as you peered around, looking for any sign of movement. All your senses flared as you listened carefully for anything. Then to your left a snap made you jump, and the Little Wolf pounded her front paws, yipping. <Run! Run!> Turning the opposite way you raced off, panting as you picked up speed.
When Steve first followed, he thought you would make straight for the cabin. But you had veered off, following your honeysuckle scent that he picked up and took the first step into the darkening woods. Inhaling deeply, it was filled with new scents. The sharpness of the pines, the fresh crushed needles where you passed through. The wolves who lived here mingled scent, and it was somewhat reminiscent of you when he first met you. But now… He drew it in deeper when he found yours, it was different, it was his. Warming in his lungs as he plucked it loose from everything else clashing his senses. It was the one that had that honeysuckle undertones, but now it was more intimate. It was a scent he was surrounded with when you pressed in against him, especially when you were just about to go into heat. A welcoming desired scent that left him aching hard and a smirk spread with a slight possessive growl rumbling through him now that he smelled it. Knowing that the sweetness would be dripping from you, his own honey pot.
“Little One, you better run, because you certainly can’t hide.” he whispered as his footfalls were heavy at first. He could hear a giggle that you tried to muffle as you darted around trees and swiftly turned into trails that you found. The ferns growing under the forest swayed with your movements, some leafy fronds getting crushed in the process. Your howl echoed and bounced around, but Steve was hot on your trail, not being deterred.
He saw you ahead, when you went around a particularly large trunk and Steve went to the right, quiet in his footfalls till he happened to finally managed to get around where you were trying to hide. You peered the opposite side, stretching a bit to look. Completely unaware of where Steve was. His fingers itched now to grab a hold of your waist, pull your ass back to grind against his hips, hear you shriek in surprise and fall back into his chest to look up at him with a grin. He knew how you would play this, trying to escape him with sweet kisses and wriggles to bolt again. As Steve attempted to sneak in closer, the pad of his foot happened to press against a twig and snapped it, making you twirl around on your toes wide eyed in surprise and Steve lunged forward to catch you, your back against the tree that was shielding you earlier and his arms caging on either side of your head.
A surprise growl rolled through you when Steve pressed himself against you, catching you efficiently between him and the tree. Your hands fisted in his shirt and your eyes flashed yellow up at him. Flops of his hair fell forward on his forehead as his head dipped to yours, teasing lust filled kisses nipping on your lips, tugging at each other hungrily with groans. “Gotcha Little One.” Steve whispered, trailing his nose against yours, and his eyes closed while he inhaled against you.
You dragged your teeth against your bottom lip while running your hands up his chest and fingers pressed through his beard to follow the sharp angle of his jaw. “You did Alpha, now what are you going to do about it?”
Steve let your warm honeyed scent arouse him further, a sticky sweet honeypot of a mess his Little One was and he wanted to get his mouth on you, wrap himself around you till the whole world fell away. A cheeky grin crinkled the corners of his eyes, his grin turning wolfish in nature as he growled at you. “The Big Bad Wolf will eat you up.”
Your head fell back as laughter burst out sharply, disrupting the quiet of the night. “Smooth Alpha.”
He nipped on your mark, turning that laughter into a distressed needy moan as Steve's hands smoothed the back of your thighs to lift you up and wrap your legs around him. Pressing his erection against your core. “I ain’t nothing if I ain't smooth ‘Mega.” He stated before claiming your lips and pressing the length of his chest into yours, stealing your air from your lungs, and making you fist a hand at the back of his head, getting lost in him.
Soldat scanned the small pack. Some of it felt familiar, but not enough for the Hydra Soldier to consider what it meant. This was just another hit on the list Brock had for his team to overtake. These wolves were lazy in the night time warmth. Lulled to think they were safe in their packs boundaries. The White Wolf flexed in Soldats mind, licking over his jaw in anticipation of hunting them down. Soldat tilted his head in the air, searching out what the scents could provide to him.
The only thing out of place was the scent of two Alphas here. One was young, still new in leading the pack, the one he was after. His control would be iffy at best over the wolves unless their loyalty was already cemented to him.
But the other stirred the White Wolf in Soldat. Making him flex anxiously a moment at the sensation. Another time, another place he knew this one. It lingered in his senses and he didn't like that. Making him clench his jaw as the White Wolf shook his fur in agitation, unsure of how he knew it. Brock's voice came over the comm in his ear, snapping out. “Is the team set Soldat?”
Soldat moved from his crouch, retreating back to where the others waited. “You all know what to do. There are two Alphas this time, go for the younger one, get the other if you can.” he told his team. Silently as always they dispersed. None of them questioned the fact that there were two Alphas. They had their orders, nothing else needed to be considered. Clint going one way through the trees, and the twins another. Wanda started to simmer red where her powers took an unnatural form, solidifying to cause harm instead of heal. Soldat shoved knives in various places in his kevlar and fitted a mask to his face for protection. That other Alpha, it still left Soldat and his Wolf unsettled for reasons he couldn't place while he prepared himself.
“Set and dispersed, starting extraction.” Soldat said into the comm, and not even thirty seconds later Pietro's snarls and howls started on the other side of the packs compound, Soldat came out of the trees, sniper rifle lifted aiming right for the sleeping group by the nearby bonfire.
Steve ground himself into you, his chest rumbling as his hands rubbed at your sides and cupped your breasts to squeeze and tease. Your head was tilted back against the tree, drawing in air best you could as your mate sucked on your neck, tracing his mark on you with his tongue, his dirty talk making you ache, and rolling your hips to create that friction. “Gonna fill you Little One. Stretch you open and leave you dripping my cum till you're pregnant with my pups.”
God that made your heart race, knowing that he was going to knot you against that tree. His hands kept tugging and making you arch your back, wanting him to get rid of your clothes now and really lay claim to your body. It was a whirlwind of sensations prickling your skin in a heated way.
But then you heard it, at first it barely registered when Steve sunk teeth into your collarbone. You almost ignored it, but the Little Wolf couldn't. She stirred through your hazed mind, making you focus again outside of your Alpha. Another howl, distressed. “Steve… wait.” You tugged at his hair to lift his head away, and he growled in warning at you that he didn't want to wait, but you pulled again.
He lifted away from where he was tasting your skin, stilling his body and frowning slightly while panting. “What's wrong Little One?”
“Listen Steve… something isn't right.” You loosened your hold now that you knew Steve was focusing on you and he tilted his head to listen. Inhaling deeply for any change in the air. He stepped back, letting you loosen your legs around his waist and slip to a stand. Cold chills laced up your spine, looking around as the night seemed to turn silent and dangerous.
<We gotta go back to Caine and the others.> The Little One pressed against the Alpha, who was rigid next to her, searching himself for what she sensed.
But did we actually hear anything? You looked around you, but Steve's hand shot out and caught your wrist in his hand to keep you from moving away from him. His eyes wide as he found what he was looking for.
“Bucky… he’s here.” The Alpha rumbled out and that's when the yells rang out, the sharp rings of gunfire.
“The others… we have to get back to the others Steve.” You tugged your wrist loose to sprint away and Steve lunged to catch you, but you were too quick, already streaking through the woods.
“Y/N! Come back!” Steve yelled as he took off after you. Shedding clothes as you raced, the urge to listen to your Alpha made you falter, but not enough to make you stop. Soon you were falling to all fours, faster to make it back as the Little Wolf and you put on a burst of speed that had everything a blur around you. Soon at your side was a streak of silver as the Alpha attempted to keep up with you on unfamiliar ground. Your twists made him skid heavily into the trees and brush, but he was never far behind as he tried to over take you and before you could burst into the chaos just out of sight of the tree line, he snatched your ruff and jerked you off your feet.
The Alpha twisted you underneath him, his jaws pinning you to the ground while you struggled, but he wouldn't loosen his hold until you stilled and your eyes rolled up to look at him, willing him to release you. He couldn't let you charge into the attack like this, and he loosened, nudging you to creep forward to see what laid beyond out of sight. Both of you stayed low to the ground slinking till breaking out from the forest to the underbrush to see what was going on.
Bodies, your old pack littered the ground and your whine echoed so loudly in distress that the Alpha flattened his ears and pressed against you before slinking along the edge, trying to find the attackers.
A heaviness filled Steve's chest because he knew exactly what he would find. His muscles coiled when he finally caught sight of Bucky, who was taking aim at Kat. She was unaware of him while trying to help the injured to their feet.
You crouched next to him, quivering in shock and anticipation at seeing the missing members of the Pack. The Alpha growled out an order, demanding you help the others. As well as stay away from Bucky, the danger to great to risk letting you go near him. Bucky obviously wasn't in control right now. Once the Alpha was sure you understood, he nuzzled you quickly and split away, leaving you to wait till he had the soldier distracted.
Soldat just happened to see the other Alpha coming at him before he could take his shot. Barely. He spun to block the large wolf from hitting him. Teeth sank into his meatal protected arm, the shield plates clinking together to hold up against the pressure of the bite and he heaved back, sending the wolf sprawling back. A smaller one bolted from their hiding spot, to reach the people he was just about to end. It didn't matter, one of the others would take care of them. Soldat turned his attention to the Alpha he had scented earlier, the one who didnt belong here.
The Silver Wolf pushed back to his feet, his chest rising and falling with each inhale. Soldat knew he was scenting him, assuming it was for the animal to figure out what he was. Swinging the rifle over his shoulder to move it out of the way, he grasped for his belt to pull out a collar. The Wolf's ears flicked forward to what was in his hand and turned wary, stalking out of Soldat's reach. A low growl rippled through him, and the White Wolf ached to submit for just a moment, but it was easy to brush it away.
<Attack him. He is not going to expect you to rush him.>
Why did you stall?
The White Wolf shook himself off, snarling out. <We have our orders.> Soldat heard the waver in him but started towards the Alpha. The Alpha matched his movements, picking up speed in his gait to collide back with him. <This ones got some balls.> Soldat heard the White Wolf remark.
All the more reason to get him collared and under control.
And just before they reached one another, the Alpha darted around him, making Soldat spin just to have the Alpha tackle him once more, teeth sinking into the kevlar of his suit. There was enough force to feel the bite, but nothing that could do damage. Fistfuls of fur was grabbed trying to wrestle him away and attempt to maneuver the collar around his neck. The Alpha managed to twist out of his hold in time and Soldat yanked a knife from a hidden spot, swinging it in an aim at the animal, trying to sink it into a vulnerable spot. Instead it grazed him, a spurt of red following the blades descent through its fur. A furious snarl demanding him to submit filled the air before man and wolf collided again.
You were busy helping Kat try to get the others away, stalling for a moment when you saw Clint emerging from out of nowhere, his aim sighted on you and the others. He was just about to let loose when you saw Caine get dragged towards him, collared now. Seeing that they had that packs Alpha, he dropped his bow and followed along with Pietro and Wanda. Unsure of what to do, Steve had demanded you only be to help and stay out of the actual fighting before breaking from cover earlier. The Omega in you wanting to obey her Alpha, keep pushing others to go into hiding like Steve wanted.
But these were your missing pack mates, and they were causing all the destruction. Everything in your senses screamed at you to go for them, as well as go back into hiding with Kat and the other survivors. Then the hot scent of blood hit you, your Alphas blood. All other thoughts left you as your nose lifted to find him.
It was being hit in the worst way possible, stinging your senses with fear as you broke from Steve's earlier command. Long leaps ate up the ground as you sought him out. You found him trying to bite at Bucky's neck before being thrown to the ground in a way that vibrated the ground, a knee dropping to his ribs while Bucky collapsed full force on him, a flash of silver in his hand let you know. Steve was just about to be collared.
The whole world just zeroes in on that moment, if you can't get there fast enough, you might lose Steve. He might be able to break free from Bucky's hold before the collar is attached. But you can't take that chance, and you make a grab for Bucky's wrist, closing fangs around the metal plates and wrenching back. Catching both of them by surprise, your back paws dig in for traction as you whip your head back and forth in a move meant to snap an animal's neck. It's enough to surprise Bucky and make him fall off the Alpha, the both of you tumbling away. It did earn you a well placed kick to your skull, which caused you to yelp while stunning you.
The Alpha pushed himself up once Bucky rolled off him, unsure of what caused him to let go, but the Alpha wasn’t going to let him get the chance again. The yelp made the hair raise on his back, now seeing the reason Bucky released him.
You disobeyed him, which resulted in your head getting kicked at and you crumpling to the ground in shock. The Alphas rage at your expense caused him to roar in fury, a whirlwind of fury attacking his best friend.
The Alpha managed to back Soldat up, covering your smaller form with his body. The Alpha bristled, his muzzle rolling up to show fangs and ears pinned back flat against his skull, warning him back. Soldat stalled again with the sensation he was supposed to listen to this Alpha, shaking his head to clear the impulsion.
“You got one of the Alpha’s, leave him.” Brock's voice screamed in Soldats ear, clearing it from the impulse. Soldat took off at a run, leaving the two of them behind.
You push yourself back to a shaky stand, having the wind knocked out of you and the kick disoriented you when the steel toe boots connected to your skull. The Alpha watched Bucky race away with perked ears, the shiver rolling through him controlling his urge to follow him, but he turned away from his best friend back to you. Padding over, the Alpha was quick to check you over, his muzzle pressing against your side to make sure nothing was broken till he nudged at your shoulder, getting you to move. When you started towards the injured, he growled sharply, making you falter and lower a bit in submission, unsure of what he wanted.
Coolly he pressed you the opposite way, towards the cabin you two were staying at for the time being. The Alpha didn't let up, keeping you heading away from the others and back to the safety of the cabin.
Steve had never had to quell such scared anger in his life, far more than when you had gone off the road that winter. It was raging hot that he could have lost you to Bucky, so easily. After he told you to stay away from Bucky, in that state the White Wolf would have easily snapped your neck if he got a hold of you. Because that wasn't Bucky, their packmate, his brother. Something happened to him.
You darted into the cabin and Steve was right behind you, the both of you racing up the stairs to the bedroom where you both shifted back almost on cue with one another. You grabbed at clothing, starting to tug them on. “We have to go back out there Steve, find them and the others.”
Steve was doing the same, but he was quick to turn towards you, his eyes still glinting hints of burning yellow while he ground out.
“You are staying here.”
You straightened and lifted your chin a bit when you heard Steve's command. The Little Wolf lowered to the ground hearing her Alpha’s command, but you simply weren’t going to accept that without finding out why you couldn't go help your former packmates. “I’m sure as hell not staying here Steve.” You hiss a bit while heading for the door. Steve was quicker though, his hand circling around your upper arm and tightening enough to pull you to a stop and back into the room. “Let me go Steven!” You try pulling out of his hold, but his hold tightened until he backed you onto the bed.
“I told you once Little One. Stay the fuck here.” His teeth snapped at his words and there was just anger in his features hiding his fear.. Fear that he could have lost you was clouding his mind with jagged memories of Pierce sticking you with that needle and he was that close to losing control and attacking Bucky then. Steve knew that if Bucky hurt you this time in any way, he wouldn't be able to control himself. No one would be safe.
You protested though, going to push against him while your voice raised in your own anger at trying to be controlled, unable to help the others. “Steve you can't-”
This time he roared out, the tendons in his neck rigid and his tone going deep and snarling at you in a way you had never seen before and you shrunk back suddenly from him. “As your Alpha I am, if you know what's good for you Y/N, stay in this cabin. That's an order.”
You hissed at him in anger from between clenched teeth. “You are going to have to make me submit Steve.”
If he had to, he would. Steve almost lost you once, so close… and that was all before you two even bonded. He was ready to lose himself back then and let the Alpha take over. It was an overwhelming sense of loss that sunk in his chest. Needing to push it away, he closed the gap between you two, pressing you back onto the bed in surprise while his lips claimed your own, searing them heatedly, and the shock made you growl against him, grasping his hair to hold on.
Steve kept the pressure, ready to make you submit to him completely. Hands grasped at your thighs, still clothed but he didn't care at this second. Wrapping them around his waist as he kissed you senseless, he easily maneuvered you up the bed, growling harshly when you tightened your hold, pulling his hair at the roots when you grabbed onto his head.
It all happened so suddenly that you could only hang while he maneuvered you to where he wanted you, blinking up at him in shock for a second when he pulled away to pant above you. Locked gazes, you arched up to meet him again, pulling at his shirt to rip at it, his hands doing the exact same to you. Shreds of clothing got tossed away as you both withered against one another. You bit into Steve's shoulder when he rutted himself against you. “You will listen Y/N, You have no choice in this.” he snarled out against your neck.
It was a heated spiral in your limbs, burning in your gut. Echoing in your mind was the Little Wolf snapping and yipping at the Alpha. You pushed against Steve to rub yourself into him, snarling against his ear. “Then do it!” It was animalistic the way he bit at your mark, making you gasp between pleasure and pain while dragging you closer till you felt him everywhere except where you needed him. Slick coated your thighs while his cock dragged against your thigh. “You want to make me listen so badly, here I am.” Another roll of your body and he pulled away to run his hands up your withering body, palms covering your breasts and marking the swells.
Before you knew it, you were flipped to your belly, Steve snapping your hips up in the air, the curve in your back sharp as you clutched at the bedding to scream your frustrations into the mattress, you were furious at Steve for commanding you to stay, and the way your body betrayed you. You could break it, but you didn't want to defy him. You had spent a lifetime going against your instincts protecting yourself, now it was time to trust for once. Steve was different, it was because he loved you to keep you safe, not use you.
He growled above you and you pressed back against him, feeling his hands wrap tightly around your hips and rock you back into position. “I couldn't live with myself if anything happened to you.”
You clenched at his words, lifting your head enough to speak without being muffled in the bedding. “Fine Steve, I'm not going anywhere.” You felt yourself finally give into him, not because you couldn't break that bond, but you didn't want to. It ached too much to defy him when it meant so much to him even though it infuriated you to do so.
His hand circled to dip between your thighs, teasing between your folds as he bit your shoulder, holding you still with his other hand while thrusting his cock into your weeping entrance and spreading you open in a sharp sting that made you cry out sharply. His thrusts were quick and dominating, leaving you withering in his hold while fingers strummed your clit and his chest crushed against your back. Grunting growls and slapping skin filled the room, words becoming meaningless between you two.
It was such a primal moment, one complete with trust as neither of you could do anything but seek connection and pleasure from one another. You felt the rush of your orgasm wash over you, crying Steves name with tears in your eyes.
Steve wasn't ready to slow down, feeling you break apart under him just made him go faster, his hand covered in your arousal flushed up your body to fondle your breast, pulling at your nipple and squeezing while he pulled you both up to your knees. It just solidified for him that he needed you, just like this all for him. You arched before him, one hand reaching behind you to grasp the back of his neck, and the other covering his hand clasped over your chest. He still rutted into you, biting your shoulder enough to keep you still while he pounded himself into you.
For You, you had never felt him so entangled in you, holding you to him so that not only did you feel him physically, but mentally. Everything he felt, feared, and needed was just an overflow of information in your bond, and it took such complete control that rational thought was impossible. All you could respond to was the way he dragged out your moans and cries, his grunts into your skin as he slapped against your backside, and punched the air from your lungs when your next orgasm turned the edges of your vision black.
“Steve, I can't…” You begged and he groaned against your mark, his tongue sweeping over the sting of the bite he left, sure you were scented with him.
“You can Little One, I have you.” He assured you as his hard thrusts turned into heavy drags through your sensitive walls that were clenching and trying to hang onto him while he so easily pushed through you to bury to the hilt.
You pushed back into him when he ground into you, the two of you falling back so you were sprawled against his chest, his arm latching over your chest to keep you in place while his feet planted against the bed. Able to leverage himself into filling you so complete, your nails dug into his forearm stretched across you and tears streamed down your face. Your body felt wrung out, not able to give him that last one he wanted.
There was no denying in this moment no matter what way Steve took you, he was in control of you, and you were just able to hold on.
You felt his knot swell, stretching inside of you while he filled you with himself, warm against your aching channel, your body milked him, claiming every burst Steve gave with a growl of your own till it all stopped. Underneath you he calmed, his arm still heavy across your chest, but he was still except for heavy dragging breaths against your neck and your own pants as your head tipped back into his shoulder, staring upwards.
“I promise, I won't leave.”
“Good Girl.” He muttered, still hints of dominating presence in his tone, but it wasn't fear now, but acceptance. Steve managed to roll you onto the bed and his hands rubbed at your side to lull you into closing your eyes to relax in the aftermath. When he pulled out, you whimpered into the pillows, clenching your fingers into the fabric.
“Just rest… I will be back soon.” He nipped at your neck, with that he moved off the bed to grab at his clothing and get dressed while you curled up on the mattress. Your body was tired and is fogging your mind trying to pull you into sleep. The last thing you felt was the scrape of his beard against your cheek as he kissed your temple and left you, his boots heavy thuds down the stairs and the slam of the front door left you alone in the bedroom, slipping finally into a fitful sleep.
The Little Wolf whined loudly after a while, leaving it echoing through your body, distressed that the Alpha was going out on his own, leaving you locked here and had been angry at your defiance. It also effectively woke you back up after a quick nap.
He will be okay. You assured her as you stretched back to a stand and went down the stairs to look out the window, watching for Steve to come back. He must be following Bucky’s trail. What happened to them?
<Hydra… Didn’t you see the collar around Bucky's neck? He's being controlled. If he's being controlled Steve isn't safe going after him alone.> The Little Wolf paced back and forth, anxious with wanting to obey her Alphas command and going to help her Mate in his hunt.
Your fingers curled around the front doors handle a moment, the internal battle making your throat close and eyes well up as you turn away from the door. You would respect your Mates order, as much as it left you scared to do so.
Steve jogged in the forest following Bucky’s scent, quickly picking up the other members of his team as they all met back up at some point. There were also many other scents where other Wolves had passed through, probably in their bid to get away from his missing packmates. Steve pulled out his phone, dialing Natasha as he came stumbling out to a dirt road, and that's where the trail ended. Fresh tire wheels showing where a heavy vehicle sped off.
The ringing of the phone was soon cut with Natasha's voice. “Steve? What’s wrong, why are you calling so late?”
“Nat are you near Y/N’s old pack?” He questioned as he leaned down to look at the tire marks, looking for anything distinct to go on, but he was quick to straighten back up. They were long gone, with Caine he suspected. Just like the other attacks Steve had heard about. For some reason they were taking the packs Alphas.
“Not too far off, why? Where are You and Y/N?” Natasha asked then and Steve confirmed where they were. “I will be right there.”
“Just come right in, Bucky and everyone just hit this area, took off with Caine.”
“Are you guys okay?” Her first concern being for you and Steve.
“Were fine, Y/N is back at the cabin we were staying at and I followed Bucky’s trail to where it ended. They must be holed up somewhere nearby.”
After hanging up, Steve took one last look around the area, and then headed back towards the compound. It would be a bit until Natasha showed up, and he knew he would have to talk to you now that his temper had calmed somewhat.
<It was the best choice Steve, we don’t know what Bucky would have done to her if he got a hold of her.>
That wasn't Bucky… or Clint, Wanda, Pietro… Steve thought, and the Alpha growled softly in agreement. They did something to them, controlling them.
<The collars, they are stronger than the one Pierce used on Bucky before. You know what this is like… you have seen it before.>
Steve’s chest tightened, knowing exactly what the Alpha was talking about. Back in his days working with Howling Commandos they ran into a similar instance before. A group of renegade wolves making their way across Europe destroying not just other shifters, but humans as well in the most vicious way. They managed to disband most of them.
The one that got away, he was the only one to break the control Hydra had on him. Steve recalled.
<And you know where he returned to… maybe it's time we follow up on that lead and see if he is still alive.>
It was something to consider Steve thought to himself as he made his way back to the cabin, easing the door open to the quiet of the cabin. The Alpha quieted in his mind as Steve let his senses open, feeling for you. He was quick to hear you shifting in the bed upstairs, rolling to your side and not actually getting any rest. An outward exhale of relief you were still safe escaped Steve as he started up the stairs.
You heard Steve come into the house and pushed to sit up when he appeared in the doorway, his eyes roving you up and down, making you feel a bit small after the earlier altercation. Your legs curled up under you at the edge of the mattress, your hands folding into your lap as your head tipped, a typical submissive pose for either your mate of Alpha. “Oh Little One…” Steve started as he came into the bedroom, moving to kneel before you on the floor, his hands sliding along your folded knees and easing up along your bare thighs. “I only did it because I had to.”
Your eyes lifted and a frown fluttered across your face.
“Had to? Steve I’m your mate and partner, you can't just keep me safe all the time.”
A soft growl rose up as he pressed his mouth to your knee, his eyes lifting with a tint of yellow in them, the Alpha so close to the surface while discussing your safety. “Can’t I? As your mate and Alpha, it's taking everything in me now not to bring you back home.” Your hands reached to cup his face, scraping slightly through his beard and spreading against his cheeks. A swipe of your thumb under his tired looking eyes.
“You know I wouldn’t go Steve.” You wrinkled your nose at him slightly and he shifted to nip the top of your thighs, you moved to unfold your legs and let them drape off the edge of the bed, your foot rubbing against Steve's ribs gently. “I can’t just leave them.”
“Still doesn’t change how I have the drive to keep you safe.” Another inhale against your thigh, light bite as Steve tasted you with a press of his tongue. “All I could think of is how I almost lost you with Pierce. Bucky is not Pierce, he's strong, more efficient, and dangerous because he’s being controlled.”
Your knees pressed against his sides and your hold tightened on his jawline to lift him from your lap so he would look at you. “And what about you Alpha? What do you think it does to me when you rush off into danger and I can't be there with you?” You felt Steve's fingers dig slightly into your hips while your words sunk in, the yellow tinge backing away as his Alpha retreated and the crystal blue sharpened. You knew it would pain Steve to think that he had caused you any distress. The Little Wolf whined, her ears flattening while seeing all this being processed.
Steve could feel the Alpha try to keep calm, respect the bond by waiting to be invited before going to his mate. Steve could imagine what you would feel being told to stay while he went into a dangerous situation.
He knew what it did to him, the bile of fear raising up in his throat once more, it wasn't something he was familiar with. Fear didn't live in Steve’s body, not till he had you, then suddenly he really did have something to fear, losing you for good. That all was sunk down deep into him from the first time, maybe he had a problem he never knew he had. That worried him to be so irrational, he couldn't let it control him, because it would just end up pushing you away.
Taking a dragging breath, he pushed up from where he was kneeling on the floor and sat next to you on the bed, you twisted to face him and crawl onto his lap till you were straddled, your arms around his neck, knowing that you had just ripped off a bandaid of sorts. “I’m sorry Little One, I put your safety first in my mind and nothing else. It will end up happening again.”
Your forehead tipped to lean against his, sighing softly as your fingers trailed down the back of his neck and back up.
“Steve, I'm not just your mate, I'm your partner. Where you go, I go to. You can't always keep me out of the way of what you deem dangerous.”
The silence stretched between you two, unable to give each other what the other wanted entirely here.

Pairing: Ivar x Reader
Word count: 2336
Warnings: language, mentions of blood, master/servant dynamic
Victory had been claimed for the sons of Ragnar. They managed to secure their hold over York, banishing the idea from the Saxons' minds that they could ever again rule the city. Hostages had been taken, and through the blood and the rain, they had seen themselves suffer their share of wounds. All battles came with a price.
Ivar had acquired his injuries, most being from arrows. After he had been tended to by healers and cleansed of blood, the damage had taken its toll and the pain had set in. He was carried to his chambers by Ubbe and another warrior. Hvitserk had not been able to lend a hand as he had sustained a spear to the leg. When first brought the news of his brother's injury, Ivar had felt a stirring of worry, and hatred towards the dead Saxon soldier. For a moment he had wished for Hel to raise the dead once more if it meant he could feed the Christian his axe. He did not want to lose another member of his family, not after his mother or even Sigurd.
The pains of war felt like a bizarre punishment after the glorious charge he had led. His body betrayed him, reminding him of his humility as a cripple once the agony of his legs joined with the burning of his battle wounds. He remembered little of the healers prodding at him and had fallen into a restless sleep, halfway between consciousness and oblivion.
When he came around again, he was roused by the smell of flowers in the dead of night. A fire was burning low in the hearth, and as he turned his head towards the table at his side, a clay vase had been filled with those familiar purple blooms. They had a delicate, sweet smell, the likes of which he had never seen around Kattegat. The harsh winters of home were something he doubted they could have withstood.
Ivar shifted carefully, trying to sit up when he took notice of the dip in the bed beside him. You were above the furs, sitting upright with your back against the wall at the head of the bed. Ólaug, or Catherine; he wasn't certain what to call you. You must have meant to sit down only for a moment but had fallen asleep instead. His eyes traced over the restful look on your face, a pleasant change from the terror that had been there the last time.
Remembering everything Hvitserk had told him, he was brought back to a state of frustration. He didn't want your fear, he wanted your admiration. You had passion when you spoke with him, something that had been driven out by this treacherous spy.
Ivar brought his attention back to his sleeping nun, taking in the rest of you. His gaze was drawn to the particular detail of your exposed calf. Your frock had ridden up to your knee, leaving your lower leg open to the air. He often found himself mesmerized by the beauty of women's legs, admitting only to himself that it was because of his disgust for his own. The smooth curve of your calf met a delicate ankle, that extended to a long, narrow foot.
He wanted to feel the heat of your soft skin, and there was no battle with temptation as he brought his hand towards the exposed flesh. His rough knuckles dragged down on your smooth skin like hail against a silk sheet. The sensation was heady, and the walls of the room felt closer from the rush of lust. Ivar was emboldened. He wrapped his hand around your ankle, forgetting from your time as his thrall that you were a light sleeper.
Your head that had been tucked into your chest jerked up, and you lurched forward, startled awake by his hand. Your eyes met and Ivar could see the same fear there that took hold of an animal before it was about to bolt away. He wasn't going to tolerate that. In no mood or condition to chase you, Ivar tightened his hold on your ankle and tugged you down on the bed with harsh force. You let out a sharp gasp, unable to collect yourself before he had you trapped below him. Everything hurt, but he struggled through the discomfort as he held himself up by his arms above you.
"I did not invite you to share my bed, Christian."
"My apologies," You sputtered. "I'm only here because your brothers do not know which slaves they can trust."
Ivar let out a huff of annoyance, unadjusted to his brothers' concerns for his well-being. It was behaviour he had come to expect from his mother, and maybe Floki. "Right, a spy who is a threat to my life, and whispers in your ear."
Your eyes that had been downcast returned to his face. "Hvitserk told you?"
"My brothers tell me everything. You were mistaken to think otherwise."
He reached for your arm between them, the one covered with the cloth bandage. You were quick to snatch it away, your face coloured in shame. Ivar brought his hand up to your cheek instead, stroking below the bruise that he had yet to get a full explanation. "Stop that, please," You whispered.
"You believe I'll hurt you, even after I've shown to be generous towards you."
"But I am only a slave, and I mean nothing to you. If you killed your brother, what chance do I have of being spared?"
Ivar frowned. It seemed the spy had filled you in on more than just the Bishop. "You know about Sigurd?"
You nodded. "I know you murdered him, like Cain slew Abel."
He did not know of these men for whom you spoke of, but he had the unfortunate feeling that the comparison was not of flattery. Now that you knew things about him that he would not have shared likely, he felt at a disadvantage. He eased away from you, only for you to let out a cry of surprise as he pulled back.
"Ivar," You exclaimed, shoving your palm at the center of his chest so he would lie back down.
He spotted or rather felt what you had seen. It seemed one of his wounds had opened up on his side, the blood leaving a cold, damp stain on his tunic. You leapt up and over him, setting to work on filling a bowl with water. Your fast pace that you had set was dizzying. Ivar watched as you opened up the leather pouch that had been abandoned on the table until now. It contained healing supplies. Your lack of hesitation for what you grabbed proved you were capable, and you were back at his side without pause.
"Off with this, please," You instructed him to shed his tunic, and you had water touching skin the moment he had discarded the soiled clothing. "Look what you've done."
Ivar had never seen you look so disapproving. It was endearing. That you had scolded him by name had not slipped past his notice. "Ivar?"
You paused long enough in your work for your eyes to widen with understanding. "Oh, forgive me. I should not have been so bold."
He turned more towards you while you continued to work, giving a small shrug in response. "It is my name, and I am no longer your master. Perhaps you should cease with formalities."
"No, it wouldn't be proper. You are still a Prince, and leader of an army."
"Then I must insist on calling you Ólaug."
He let out a hiss as you took the needle to his skin, halting only a moment to let him adjust to the discomfort before moving to close the wound. You shot him a small smile, and he grunted from time to time with each passing of the point through his flesh.
"But that's not my name," You insisted as you tied off the end of the stitch, cutting away the remainder of the loose thread with a small knife.
"And it isn't Catharine," Ivar shot back. "So tell me, who are you?"
You sat back on your chair, resting your hands in your lap. They were pink and red from his blood, with dark grime under your short nails. A healer's hands. His own were rough and stained with blood, but from taking lives, not saving them.
"Why is my old name so important? This is the second time you've asked it from me."
"I've never known someone to abandon their name. Your God asks strange things of you."
"As I'm sure yours do as well," You said with no unkindness in your tone. "May I ask about the markings on your back?"
"Your men do not have tattoos?"
You shook your head, eyes wide and full of curiosity. "The body is meant to be untainted, and we should be satisfied with what God gave us."
And yet they made women cut their hair before entering a nunnery. Ivar did not say as much. You were finally allowing your guard to slip, falling back into another one of your conversations that he'd missed.
"We do not read or write in books as you do, but we preserve our stories in runes and symbols. Tattoos are just another way to honour the Gods."
"Did they hurt?"
Ivar let out a gruff laugh. "I was born into suffering. I hardly remember what it felt like to have the colours bleed under my skin. But any sacrifice to the Gods is a privilege, be it in pain, or a life."
"I don't understand how your gods could demand the life of their people," You said, a distraught look falling over you.
"And I don't understand why you Christians nail your people up on crosses."
"It is an act of punishment and humiliation for the criminal. It should dissuade others from committing the same sins."
Ivar smirked. "But we're the savages?"
"I don't claim to be a delegate for all Christians, but I don't believe you are savages. I sometimes think we are similar."
Viking and Christian alike; impossible. "You are naive to think that."
"Maybe so," You said, coming to a stand as you started to clean up your supplies. "But this fighting for York could have been prevented if the King had settled on negotiations with you and your brothers. Our holy Father blessed us all with free will, and we chose to fight and kill, just as your people have."
"A war is a strange place to search for peace," He retorted.
You let a chuckle escape, turning to him with a face flooded in pink. It was beautiful. "Indeed."
There was a prolonged stretch of silence, neither one of them filling it until you returned to sit at the foot of the bed. Ivar liked to think you were comfortable enough in his presence for the moment that you had not felt the need to fill it with empty words.
"Is peace what you want for your people?" He prodded while shifting underneath the furs.
"I'm not in a position to speak on such matters as this is the most exposure I've seen of battle. I suppose peace is better than tending to bloody men, and women waiting at home for husbands and sons who will never return."
"And what about you? If you could wish for anything in this world, what would it be?"
Your face turned to weariness, and for a moment he suspected he had offended you. He would have offered to take the words back if it would have helped, but you chose to answer.
"I wish I was happy," You said in a voice so low that Ivar had almost missed what you had said. But he had heard, to which he frowned in confusion. "You thought I would ask for freedom?"
"Isn't that what all those in enslavement hope for?" He rebuked.
"Before I was captured by you heathens, I was still a prisoner. This is just a different cage."
"I thought being a nun was an honour?" He couldn't help but sneer the words, but you did not appear dismayed.
"When I joined the convent, it was for a sense of duty. It brought me contentment, but there was no joy in my days."
You brought your legs up onto the furs, settling in without regard of whom you were close to. Ivar was pleased by your unintentional behaviour, mesmerized by your fingers as you trailed them through the thick pelted covers.
"I don't understand," He spoke up eventually, long enough to break his concentration on your stroking of the furs.
"Of course you don't. You are a man, a Viking, and a prince. Your life was marked with freedom of choice the moment you drew breath. If I was granted freedom this very moment, where would I go?"
'With me', he thought but did not say the petulant thought aloud. If it was happiness you desired, then he would give it to you.
"I've intruded on you long enough. Would you like me to leave?" You enquired, moving to stand.
"No, stay," he commanded without thinking, and the harshness of his voice caused you to flinch. Taking a quick breath through his nose, he tried again. "Tell me about Cain and Abel."
You eased back onto the bed, choosing to stay out of arm's reach as you delved into your tale. Ivar listened, enraptured by the passion that took over you in the telling. His own heart was beating with a different excitement, and he wondered how much longer he could keep his adoration from you. You were a Christian disguised in heavy frocks and gaudy crosses, but beneath all of that lurked a free woman longing to burst forth, and Ivar was going to draw her out.

Heartlines [ calum hood ]
w.a.h series | pt.2 | word count: 3,802 | masterlist
You wish you could say the separation got easier with time, but sadly, that was a lie.
Months had passed since the last time you saw the man you love in person, and the heartache of being apart without knowing when it would end didn't ease until the day you woke up and saw the words that made you burst into tears before they'd even fully registered.
The world was healing. Be it at a slow pace, it was still getting better by the day in it's own little ways.
You favoured the day fast food opened again the most, sitting with your siblings in a McDonald's drive through for two hours listening to New Order and Brockhampton before finally getting a big mac you'd been craving ever since lock down began.
But once things started opening up again, Calum found his ways to surprise you nearly instantly. First it was a bunch of flowers, then a new fluffy blanket, then something that didn't come from a store.
Calum had always known you were a hopeless romantic, and decided to play on it in a way he knew would make you melt.
Nearly a week after your text to him and his video to you, you received a piece of snail mail covered in Australian stamps, your heart racing as the scrawl on the front of the envelope was instantly recognisable to you.
Upon reading the letter inside, your entire body glowed with happiness and your face was soaked with tears, after all, you'd never received a love letter before.
Once the first letter was sent, you wasted no time making your own and sending it back to him, including polaroids you knew he didn't have, and spraying the paper with your signature perfume for added effect.
Calum was shy to admit it, but he did cry when he opened his letter and it smelt just like you.
This continued on back and forth for weeks, until the day more than just a letter could travel between you.
As normal, you sat with your family watching the press conference with the prime minister and director general of health in the late afternoon, as you'd become familiar with anytime there was an announcement due.
There were rumours of a travel bubble opening up between New Zealand and Australia, but not wanting to get your hopes up, you didn't feed these rumors too much thought.
But still, you sat beside your sister with a hopeful and anxious feeling stirring in your stomach as you watched today's announcement.
The moment the rumours were confirmed, you let out a whimper as tears clouded your vision.
"One week from today, starting at midnight, domestic flights will resume between Australia and New Zealand."
You waited until the end of the broadcast, excusing yourself to your room to call Calum, knowing he'd been watching the same thing being said by his own prime minister.
What you didn't see was the look of relief on your families faces. Not only for the fact life was now closer to being normal than ever, but it was the first time they had seen you cry happy tears in the midst of what you confined in your brother, one of the hardest mental states you've ever been in. Their lives were all on hold, sure, but their lives are here, and you had made a life for yourself in a completely different country, and while you would always love your home, you had another one now that you wanted to be wrapped up in again.
The joy they saw in you wasn't just because you were closer to seeing Calum again, it was because you were closer to your life again. Your job, your home, the friends you considered just as important as your blood family, they were all finally at your fingertips again.
You didn't care about the fact your messy top knot was falling apart, or that the tears were still pouring down your face, all you wanted was to see him.
Shutting your door behind you, you pull up a facetime request for Calum, him answering seconds later like he was about to call you himself.
"Baby." The pet name falls out of your mouth as you see tears clouding his eyes, his once short bleached out hair now echoing the blonde tips of his past as his natural curls come back with a vengeance.
"Hey darlin." He says, his voice thick with emotion.
He covered his face with one hand as he could feel his tears start to fall, an overwhelming sense of relief flooding him as he saw your bright smile and tears of joy.
Calum had sat in shocked silence as he watched the news, not snapping back to reality until he felt his mother pulling him into a hug once the announcement sunk in, the words he heard making his knees feel weak.
"Don't cry, my love. I'm coming home as soon as possible, okay?" You reassure him, wiping your own tears away with the sleeve of the hoodie Calum could swear used to be his.
"I hope you know once I get you again I'm never letting go." He says quietly, your heart swelling with his words.
Little did you know, the engagement ring he had finally asked his mother for sat just out of frame, more meaning in his words than you realised.
"Who said I'd ever want to leave?"
Calum just shook his head with a laugh, and from there, you both got to planning.
As much as you loved your family, you had also been around each other every day for months, and while Calum was more keen on the time he finally got to spend with his family again after touring the world since he was a teenager, you'd had a solid twenty years with your family before you left home. With that in mind, it was decided that you would be flying to Australia, your visa allowing you to stay for a month before you would have to come back to New Zealand.
Planning out your next steps together, you made a full two month plan, and hoped that after those two months, you'd both be flying home to LA, together.
With one more week spent giving as much of your time as possible to your family, you finally packed your things up again, hopped in the car with your siblings, and headed to Auckland airport.
Instead of coming to the airport, you and your parents decided to share your tearful goodbye with each other at home.
After checking in, handing over your bags, and hugging both of your siblings til they told you that you were the most embarrassing one in the family, you finally boarded the flight to Sydney.
Little did you know, your boyfriend was already watching the clock to see when he could acceptably start waiting at the airport.
While you watched Avengers Endgame on your laptop to pass the time, Calum was pacing around the living room of his family home, Mali laying on the couch behind him with a pillow over her head so she didn't have to watch her brother burn a hole in the floor.
"You already know she's gonna say yes." She says, lifting the pillow for a moment before putting it down again.
"You don't know that for sure." He mutters lowly, checking his watch again and seeing your estimated arrival time was still two hours away.
Calum walked upstairs to his room, looking into his mirror for what felt like the millionth time today as he checked his hair and outfit for the day.
With hairdressers opening up again a couple weeks ago, Calum had strongly thought about clipping off all his hair before you saw him again, but knowing how much you loved his grown out curls, he instead decided to get it trimmed and styled yesterday, hiding it under a beanie while facetiming you the night before.
He once again readjusted his leather jacket, a Elvis shirt underneath with simple black pants and some converse to complete the look. While he had thought about pulling a suit out from the few he'd brought with him, he knew there was a high chance you'd tackle him, deciding comfort was a better idea instead.
Between leaving for the airport with his family and actually arriving, Calum had tapped the inside pocket of his leather jacket more than thirty times.
The small velvet ring box in his pocket was at the front of his mind as he sat beside Mali in the back of the car, his mum in the front passengers seat, and his dad driving them closer and closer to the most important question Calum has ever asked in his life.
His whole family was excited to see you, and it wasn't only because they were about to welcome you into their family, but because in their eyes, you were already part of it.
Whenever Calum would be able to come home throughout the last three years, he would always hear the question "is y/n coming with you?" whenever he let his family know about his plans. It wasn't a secret that they had a soft spot for you, which meant that not only were they excited for you to be here for Calum, they were excited to see you themselves.
After parking and walking through the airport Calum was more than familiar with, he couldn't help but notice how clammy his hands were, or the way his leg would bounce anxiously when he finally sat down in the waiting lounge outside your arrival gate.
He was nervous. Excited, but nervous.
You were feeling a lot of the same as you sat in the window seat seeing Sydney slowly coming into view.
You'd spent the last twenty minutes of the flight doing some incredibly simple makeup, certain it would probably get kissed off, or cried off your face if you added too much. You only added a slight bit of green eyeshadow to match the green t-shirt you wore over a striped long-sleeved shirt, your black jeans and sneakers finishing off the look you stressed over for a solid two hours before you left for the airport.
Feeling your heart race as you approached the airport, you tried to take a deep breath as your emotions threatened to get the better of you, but you refused to cry before you'd even seen him.
Stepping onto Australian land, you felt an entirely different wave of excitement hit you. You weren't the kind of person who liked to stay in one place for too long a time, and spending so long back at home with your family made you feel that urge to travel again more than usual.
You could barely contain yourself as you walked through the airport, collecting your bags quicker than expected and making your way through the area before your gate exit.
Stopping for a moment in the hall, you take one last deep breath, nothing able to prepare you for the wave of emotions you were sure to feel.
Calum checked his pocket one last time as he saw people starting to come from your gate, standing with his family in toe as he tried his best to see you through the crowds of people.
The second you walk around the corner, you see him, standing there with a mix of emotions obvious on his gorgeous face you had missed so, so much.
You cover your mouth with your hand as a sob erupts from your throat, and you walk faster towards him, a death grip on your trolley that you let go of as he finally spots you, and you see him let out a breath it looks like he's been holding for months the second his eyes land on you.
Your trolley is lost behind you as you break out into a run, him doing the same and meeting you halfway where you crash into his arms with so much force it nearly sends both of you crashing to the floor.
Nothing in your life had ever come close to feeling as good as having Calum's arms wrapped around you so tightly that he had lifted your feet off the ground, your legs automatically wrapping around him as you try to hold him as close as physically possible.
Both your bodies shook as you cried, tears of joy, relief, and pure happiness all coming at once as Calum finally sets you on your feet.
Barely pulling away, he pushes your hair away from your face, inspecting you like he was seeing you for the first time all over again. You did the same, taking in his features that no pictures or screens could ever do justice.
With shaky hands, you grin as you carefully and gently dry his tears, taking your opportunity to rake your hands through his curls, feeling like it had been a lifetime since you'd gotten a chance to and savouring the sensation of finally having him in front of you.
Taking your face in both of his hands, he pulls your face to his, kissing you with more passion and emotion than you had ever experienced before. It felt like the usual fireworks you felt when Calum kissed you had been replaced with straight TNT, your heart beating out of your chest so hard you were convinced he could hear it.
When you both finally pull away because of your need for breath, Calum holds you close still, peppering kisses all over your face and making you laugh so hard you feel a fresh wave of tears pour down your cheeks.
Making you yelp in surprise, Calum picks you up again, turning and walking towards the exit a few steps.
"Okay we can go now." He jokes, and with him turning around, you can finally see Mali and Mr. and Mrs. Hood standing a couple feet away.
Gasping in surprise, you signal to Calum to let you down, which he hesitantly does, only to see you crash into Mali with open arms tightly wrapping around her.
"I've missed you guys so much!!" You say, your voice thick with another wave of emotion as you bear hug Mali.
"We've missed you too, chickie." Joy smiles, opening her arms for her own hug which you happily deliver with a kiss hello to her cheek.
You give Malcom a hug before Mali pulls you back to her for another, making you laugh as the smiles on the family you loved so much made you feel so much better than you had been the last few weeks.
"I'm so happy we finally have our third to outnumber the boys." Mali says, wiping a fake tear from her eye as you notice she's pulled your luggage trolly to sit beside your small group, a camera you recognised as hers sitting on top facing you all.
"Don't worry, we haven't gotten as bad as she makes us out to be." Malcom says with a laugh as he wraps his arm around Joy's shoulders.
"I have a feeling she's gonna be on her own team." She says, a knowing smile on her face as she looks past you to where you could sense Calum behind you.
Turning around to follow her gaze, you feel all the air in your lungs leave your body.
Standing in front of you, Calum's breath came in anxious bursts as he looked at you with pure adoration, a small red velvet box in one hand as he reached out to take yours, doing everything he could to remember the words he rehearsed in his head more times than he could remember.
"Y/n," he starts shakily, "since the first day I met you by total accident, you have intrigued, confused, and amazed me over and over again. From the second we first threw around the idea of being together, you didn't ever question the miles between us we knew we would have to face, the press that would take hours, or the days I would spend locked away in my studio. Instead, you decided to love me for who I am, a lovesick idiot who eats your secret oreos and adores you more than I could ever express with words. These last few months without you have been the most challenging and unwanted thing I've ever gone through, and it's driven home the fact that if I could, I would never leave your side again."
Calum takes a deep breath, forcing down the tears that so desperately wanted to escape as he watched your tears pouring down your face, a look of shock staying with you as he spoke.
"You're the funniest, smartest, most creative, and most beautiful woman I've ever met, and I don't know who I'd be today without you. Nothing could prepare me for the happiness you'd bring into my life by just waking me up by shifting closer to me in the middle of the night, holding my hand when the world gets too loud, or ignoring me to defeat Alduin for the millionth time." You can't help but to laugh at his words, using your sleeve to wipe away your tears as you try to stay as silent as possible.
But your hand flies to your mouth to smother a sob as Calum gets down on one knee in front of you, looking up at you with glassy eyes as he finishes his speech.
"I adore you, I admire you, and y/n, I love you with my whole heart. I'm the luckiest man in the universe to have you, and I would take an arrow to the knee for you any day of my life. I've loved you since our first date, and if I can only be sure about one thing in this world, it's that I'm going to love you for the rest of my life, a life that I want to spend the rest of with you."
Opening the ring box in front of him, your eyes land on the most perfect ring you've ever seen in your life. A thin band engraved with flowers held a small diamond in its circle shaped setting, the white and silver complimenting the simple style and elegance of the ring that you knew had seen a love before yours.
"Y/n, will you marry me?"
You finally let out the sobs you had been trying to hold in, nodding your head furiously as you pulled Calum up from the floor.
"Yes. In every lifetime, yes." You cry, pulling his face to yours and kissing him as hard as you could, the saltiness of your tears mixing with his as you heard the people around you burst into applause.
You hadn't even taken notice of the crowd that had formed around you once they had seen Calum get down on one knee, but they were all captured in the background of the footage Mali had been recording the whole time for you to see later.
Calum pulled back just long enough to slide the ring he was still holding onto your shaking hand, his own not much steadier as the adrenaline and relief hit him at full force.
"I told you so!" Mali laughs happily, coming over and wrapping her arms around the two of your, excitement and love buzzing through your small group.
Joy and Malcom join Mali in wrapping the two of you up in hugs, and when you finally do pull away from each other, the wet patch on his chest from your tears matches the one on your shoulder from his.
Your tears lighten, but don't disappear as your hand sits perfectly in Calum's while you all walk out to the car, you and Malcom loading your baggage into the back before you climb into the car, sandwiched between Calum and Mali, both of them holding your hands as you drive home.
Your new fiancé wastes no time wrapping you up in hugs and kisses the second the door of his bedroom closes, your bags sitting beside it after you dropped them there once you and Calum had excused yourselves.
Before you made your way upstairs, Joy had let you know that her and Malcom would be taking you all out to dinner that night to celebrate, but that was pushed to the back of your mind as you peppered kisses along Calum's jaw.
You weren't sure if everyone had made a consciousness effort to give you two some time alone, but with Malcom heading back into work to collect some things, Joy going to visit a friend for coffee, and Mali meeting up with some friends at a recording studio for a couple hours, you and Calum were left alone.
Knowing this, Calum pulls your face back up to his, pressing a heated kiss to your lips as he lifts you up to lay you down on the bed, climbing on top of you and letting his hands drift under your shirt.
Pulling back for a moment, Calum hovers above you, looking down at you like you're the most precious thing he's ever had the honour to witness. And as you looked up to him, hands each side of his face, you could swear he was the most beautiful person the universe had created.
"I've missed you-" you kiss him "-so much."
You're met with a gorgeous smile as he tightly wraps his arms around you where your shirt was now riding up, flipping you over so you now rested on top of him, legs tangled together and pure bliss coursing through you.
"I've missed you too, way too fucking much." He breaths, perfectly content for the first time in months.
"Your family already know by the way." He adds with a sly smile, and you push yourself up so you can look at him.
"That I'm engaged to the most amazing man on earth?" You question with a raised eyebrow.
He just grins, nodding as you rest your head against his neck.
"I video called your parents yesterday, told them my plan. I asked if I could marry you months ago though."
Your eyes go wide at his casual tone, like he hasn't just told you one of the sweetest things on earth.
"Everyone knew but me." You deadpan.
"Mhm. Sorry love." He apologises, kissing the top of your head.
"Don't be sorry, I wouldn't have changed anything about it."
You reach up to kiss his jaw once more, snuggling even closer to him and letting out a soft sigh, peace finally settling in you as you laid in his arms again, him squeezing you as close as he possibly could.
"Told you I'm not letting you go again."

Need The Sun-5- Tyler Seguin
A/N: Get ready for a nice little emotional rollercoster. But in a good way?? I think.
Bad- James Bay
“Mommy! Come on! Stop walking so slow!” Ella tugged on your arm to try and get you to move faster.
You laughed and slowly picked up your pace. Ella wouldn’t stop until both of you were inside and ready for whatever movie Tyler picked. Normally, you didn’t come to movie nights, Tyler would come pick her up and bring her back in a few days, this time, however, Tyler asked if you wanted to come. Apparently, he was having some of the other guys over and thought it might be good for you to get out of the house.
You hadn’t done much in the last week, especially not when you were still trying to live off of caffeine. Although, the energy drinks and sodas were starting to fail you. Now it was just about trying to stay awake long enough to get through the day, and still have enough energy for Ella when it was over.
“Uncle Jamie!” She let go of you and ran to Jamie, who was standing just inside the door.
“Little bug! Have you gotten bigger? Huh? I swear you’ve grown another foot!” Jamie joked.
“No silly!”
“No?” He gasped, “Seggy! What are you feeding my little niece when she’s here?”
You loved that Jamie really did consider himself Ella’s uncle. It didn’t matter that he wasn’t really family. He and Jordie loved her just as much as they’d love their own family. It made you happy, having no real siblings of your own, for her to have so many aunts and uncles. Between Tyler’s sisters and his team, she had more than enough people in her corner.
“She just eats her veggies, right Ella May?”
She nodded excitedly, “Mmhm! Veggies make you strong! Strong means I can play hockey!”
“Alright, I’m stepping in before you completely turn her into a little hockey player,” You joked.
“Hey,” Tyler smiled softly when he realized you were there, “Was the drive over okay?”
“Yeah, hardly any traffic for once.”
Jamie reached over to give you as good of a hug as he could with Ella in his arms. You didn’t realize you were playing with your old necklace until Jamie gave you a little look. Quickly, and hopefully, before he or Tyler realized what was now held on the chain, you tucked it back under your shirt. The necklace itself was passed down by your grandmother, but what now hung on that chain was something more important to you. Something that weighed heavy against your chest. Something you’d prefer to keep a secret from both of the men in the room.
“Well, Y/N, do you want a drink or anything?” Tyler asked, “The rest of the guys should be getting here soon.”
You took a shaky breath; a drink would be good. You’d probably need a few to get through a movie night with all of them, even if it was probably going to be a Disney movie for Ella. They’d still find a way to make sly comments here and there or just act like four-year-olds too.
“A drink would be nice, yeah.”
Jamie set Ella back down, “Little bug, why don’t you go play until the other guys get here?”
Next thing you knew, she was bolting down the hall towards her room, three dogs right on her heels. They wouldn’t leave her side when she was around. Her three little bodyguards, who would probably stop anyone from hurting her if they had to.
Tyler handed you a glass of wine not long after. You tried not to jolt at the feeling of his hand brushing yours. You tried to ignore the feeling that spread through you, the way you could almost feel his hand still ghosting over yours. One touch, one innocent touch, was almost enough to break you down again.
“Thanks,” You had to keep yourself from drinking the whole glass in that instant.
Maybe you should’ve. But you knew one glass was all you could have. You had to look after Ella, and you would in no way, allow yourself to get any type of drunk around the team. You’d learned your lesson from over the years. Not to mention you weren’t sure if you’d make it if you had to spend another night in this house, in a bedroom as far away from Tyler as you could get. Anywhere else you’d be fine, but not under this roof. You wouldn’t be able to keep yourself together.
In fact, you were already struggling. Part of you felt like you were stuck in a time warp. Maybe if you closed your eyes, you could see what it was like before again. A night off, with Tyler and Jamie, sitting around watching movies and drinking. This would’ve been a normal night.
“What movie are we watching Segs?” Jamie asked.
“Uhh she wanted to watch Miracle,” He shrugged, “So, looks like hockey.”
“Wait, really? I can never get her to watch it with me,” You were shocked.
You’d grown up on Miracle, or the story of it at least. You’d gone to see the movie in theaters and watched it all the time in your younger years. In the last year, you’d tried to get Ella to sit through it with you because you figured she’d like it, but she always refused. Saying she’d rather watch Mona again.
“Yeah, we watched that and all three Mighty Ducks the other week,” He replied, “She loves them.”
You tried not to feel upset. They were just movies. But it was another thing you were missing out on. You knew that both of you were missing out on little milestones in her life. But you also knew that he missed out on a lot more. So, while you were happy that he was able to be there for little things like a movie, you couldn’t help but hurt a little because it wasn’t you.
“She also asked if we could watch Beauty and The Beast since it’s your favorite.”
“She did?” You questioned.
He shrugged like it was no big deal, “She said that movie always makes you happy. And she likes it when you sing along with her. Plus, it did use to be tradition that we’d watch that with her every weekend, and then Slapshot after she went to bed.”
You found yourself pulling at the collar of your shirt, just above where your necklace stopped. Suddenly you felt like you were intruding on something. Almost like you’d lost the right to be here. Leaving now wasn’t an option, you wouldn’t be able to go until the night was over, but you needed a minute to gather yourself.
You needed to get outside, for just a second. Just to be away from both of them, so you could collect yourself. Maybe try to turn off your emotions, or at least force this feeling down. Between the feeling in your gut, the ache in your heart, and the way he was looking at you, you were sure you were going to die right there.
“Shit, Ella left Bear Bear in the car and you know she won’t sit through a movie without him,” You explained, “I’ll be back.”
You tried not to run, god did you try. But you could feel your chest tightening and your lungs fighting for air. You couldn’t figure out why tonight was so hard. Maybe it was because it was so familiar. Hockey games were easy because you could focus on something else, and you’d love hockey no matter what.
You leaned against your car, resting your arms on the roof. You tried to slow your heart and your breathing. You tried to convince yourself that whatever just came over you wouldn’t happen again. You wouldn’t let it, you were in control. Whatever was going on, you could get through it and get through the night.
You could ignore the way he looked at you. The hurt mixed with something else, something that rocked you and terrified you. You should be happy that the two of you could be in the same room together, have normal conversations together. You wanted that for Ella. But the selfish part of you wished he’d move on, or that he’d just hate you and be done with it. Sure, it would hurt, but in some ways, it would hurt less than whatever he was feeling.
You took a few more seconds, letting the cool air shock you back into reality. You couldn’t get shaken up like this. Not only did you not have the right to, but you couldn’t let anyone see you like this, much less Ella. Never mind the fact that you felt like you could go to sleep already, that was nothing new. You could play off being so tired, but this was something different.
You knew you needed to go back in before one of them came out to find you. You knew they would if you stayed out here too long. But you didn’t want to move, it was almost like all of your energy was ripped from you. The simple interaction of a conversation left you with nothing to give.
Somehow, you forced yourself to take a step back and open the car door. Bear Bear was in the seat right next to Ella’s car seat. She’d been too excited to get inside that she’d completely forgotten about him, which was unusual for her. She normally always had him in her hand.
You sighed and grabbed the stuffed bear. She hadn’t let you take off the jersey yet, at this point you weren’t sure if she ever would. You hugged the bear to your chest and played with the fur. You had to find the strength to go back in there. The other guys would be coming soon and you couldn’t keep hiding outside.
“Jamie you can’t- you don’t even know that,” You heard Tyler stammer once you opened the door.
“Dude, have you seen her necklace?”
“It’s her grandmother’s ring. Always has been, she got it as a teenager.”
“No, that ring was golden. I saw two silver bands. Tyler, I’m telling you, she still has them.”
Your hand shot up to your necklace. The weight of the rings seemed to double. How did Jamie know? You never pulled them out from under your shirt, and surely you didn’t pull your necklace enough for him to realize what was on it.
Your heart rate picked up. Tyler knew you still had the rings. You’d tried to give them back to him during the whole process of the divorce, but he kept telling you to keep them. Time after time he told you they were yours and that you could do whatever you wanted with them.
At first, you put them in the very back of a drawer you hardly opened. You didn’t want to see them, seeing them made you feel sick. But then, part of you wanted something as a reminder. You wanted to remember all of the love and the dreams those two rings represented. So, you slid them into the same chain that held your grandmother’s ring.
You didn’t tell anyone. The last thing you wanted was for everyone to know that you still wore your wedding rings. That was the last thing you wanted Tyler to know. But now he did, and all you could do was hold your breath and wait.
“She keeps lying to me,” Tyler mumbled, “She won’t tell me the truth about any of it. At first, I thought maybe she was having-”
“If you tell me that you thought she was cheating on you, I will smack you. You know damn well that she would never do that,” Jamie argued.
“No, I know that. But Jame, she dropped the divorce on me without any reasoning, besides the fact that she claimed she didn’t love me. What else was I supposed to think?”
You knew you needed to either leave or step in. But you were frozen. You wanted to move, you wanted to make it stop, make him stop. You could hear the hurt in his voice. Part of you wanted to hug him and spend hours apologizing to him, the other part wanted to run as fast and as far as you could.
You clutched onto the bear even tighter. Maybe you could wish it all away. Maybe, somehow, you could turn back the clock and undo all of this. Even if it was just for a second, that’s all you wanted. To go back, to make things right.
You wished you would’ve made other choices. Maybe taken a second to realize that you would hurt more than just yourself with all of this. None of this helped Tyler, or Ella, or yourself. But it was too late now, you’d done the damage, trying to fix it would only cause more. You kept reminding yourself that.
“And what do you think now?” Jamie asked.
“I still love her. That’s all I can think about. I could try and put a shit ton of distance between us, hell I could have a different girl in bed every night, but I’d still miss her. I’d still love her.”
“Tyler.”
“I know Jamie, trust me I know. My sisters tried to snap me out of it. But I just,” he paused, “I promised to spend the rest of my life with her. I didn’t think I was capable of that until her. Now, even thinking about spending it with someone else feels wrong. Having someone else in bed with me, dating someone…all of it.”
You almost stumbled back. You never thought you’d hear him say that, whether you were meant to hear it or not. You felt like the air had been knocked out of you. You wanted this, yet at the same time, you didn’t. You thought he’d be able to move on, you expected him to. But you never thought that would be the reason that he didn’t. He still loved you. He never stopped loving you.
Even after you broke his heart. Even after you broke up your family, with little to no excuse. It didn’t seem to matter that you tried being cold and closed off to him. It didn’t seem to matter that you’d taken almost everything he loved away. He still loved you.
“I’d marry her again in a heartbeat if she’d let me Jamie. I’ll forgive everything, she just has to say the word. Hell, I’ll even fall at her feet. She can have it all. I don’t care, I just want her. I want our family back.”
Something broke inside you, or maybe finally broke loose. You found yourself moving quickly through the house. At the same time, they both seemed to realize that you’d heard everything. You could see the look on Jamie’s face, but you didn’t dare look at Tyler.
You felt the tears running down your cheeks before you even realized you were crying. Suddenly you began to regret even coming. You shouldn’t have heard any of that. Because now you wouldn’t be able to let it go, all you’d be able to hear was him saying how much he loved you. How much he’d do for you.
You were the one who decided things needed to end rather than talking your fears over. If you hadn’t been so stupid, you’d still be happily married. Ella would have both parents. Yet, here he was, saying that he’d do almost anything for you if it meant getting you back.
This wasn’t part of the plan. You never anticipated that he’d still love you after all this time. But then again, you always assumed he’d hate you, and he never did. You didn’t understand any of it, none of it made sense. How did you get to this point?
You dropped Bear Bear onto the couch and spun around. You needed to get out of here. You’d come back for Ella in a little while, but you needed space to process. That is if you could even process all of this. He still loved you.
“Y/N! Wait!” You heard Tyler say as you made it to the door.
You wouldn’t let yourself stop. If you stopped, you’d stay, and then you’d get into a situation you promised yourself you’d avoid. You were heaving to try and get air in. Shock, this had to be shock. You weren’t sure what you’d expected Tyler to feel towards you, but it wasn’t love.
You heard him running out behind you. You knew from experience that he wouldn’t let you go. He’d rather have you scream and yell at him during a fight than leave. But you wished he’d let you go this time. You didn’t want him to see you crying like this, or at all really. But the crying wasn’t something to control now.
You just kept hearing his words over and over again. You thought you might vomit. You couldn’t think straight, much less face him right now. He already had ownership of your heart, you’d given it willingly years ago. But it felt like he’d just ripped it from your chest, whether he meant to or not.
“Y/N, please stop,” He begged, “Don’t run away from me again, please.”
You tried to force down the pain that was building in your chest. You were in fight or flight mode, and he was begging for you to stay. You weren’t sure how you’d be able to manage this. How could you have a conversation with him after that?
“I didn’t mean-”
“What? You didn’t mean it? Just another joke between you and the boys?” You demanded.
“No. Fuck. Y/N, I didn’t mean for you to hear it like that. Damnit, this shouldn’t even be happening!”
“You’re right, it shouldn’t. But it is because I’m the one who made it happen,” You replied, your voice cracking, “So yell, scream. Hate me. I did this, it’s time to stop pretending that this isn’t my fault. So, do what you have to do Tyler.”
He took a step towards you, “Then I have to say this, and I really need you to listen to me,” his voice was gentle, careful even, “I love you. I am in love with you, and I don’t think I’ll ever stop. I know you don’t love me, or at least not like you used to, but that’s too bad. Because I am never going to stop loving you.”
You tugged on the chain so that it pulled out from under your shirt. The rings were on full display now. No going back, even though he knew anyway. Knowing and seeing are different things.
“I don’t wear these just to wear them. I wear them because-”
He cut you off by wrapping his arms around you and pulling you closer to him. There wasn’t a second to hesitate or overthink, because his mouth was on yours before you could. You hadn’t expected him to do that.
But you found yourself practically melting into him. You clutched onto him, feeling like the world was spinning around you. Hell, the whole world could come to an end at that moment and you wouldn’t have cared.
You could feel yourself starting to lose it. You pulled him closer to you, trying to get as close as you could. He seemed to share the same sentiment because not a second later he was doing the same.
It wasn’t a power struggle. This felt more like two people getting to know each other again. Yet everything felt familiar to you. The way he held you, the way he felt, the way he tasted. This was all the man that you’d fallen in love with.
The two of you started backing up until you hit your car. Your hands found their way into his hair, tugging gently. You never thought you’d end up like this, but you weren’t going to stop him. You liked it too much.
You’d forgotten how much you loved this. How much you loved being close to him. You never wanted to stop now. He was addictive. You knew you’d never be able to get enough. You could probably spend your whole life like this and still feel like you’d never get enough.
“Tyler,” You were begging for something that you didn’t even understand.
“I love you,” He murmured against your lips, “I love you.”
Nothing else mattered. You just wanted him, you wanted more. Hearing him say that seemed to bust you open. Damn being rational. Damn playing it safe. You wanted this, you needed it. You could deal with all of the repercussions later.
Your hands wondered under his shirt. Your knees were weak. You couldn’t even register the fact that you two were outside, pressed up against your car. You didn’t care that Jamie could probably see you two. Or that Ella was inside. All you could think of was him.
He pushed up your shirt so that he could feel any amount of skin. Your whole body reacted to him. You were hot, your skin was on fire. Everywhere his hands moved it got worse. You felt dizzy in the best way.
“More. God please. I need more.”
“Fuck. Y/N”
He pulled one of your legs up. His hand ran up and down your thigh. His lips started wondering down your neck, nipping at the skin here and there. He’d be the death of you, that much was certain.
His hand that was under your shirt moved higher slowly, almost painfully slow. You were panting, unable to get a full breath in. You weren’t sure what either of you were trying to accomplish in his driveway, but at this point, you wouldn’t say no. Not with his mouth on your neck. You were pretty sure you could lose it just like this.
“Shit.” Tyler quickly pulled away from you, pulling you up from the car in the process.
It took you a second to snap back to reality, but when you did you realized that someone else pulled into the driveway. You tried to comb through your hair and fix your shirt. Just before the person got out of the car, Tyler tugged on your necklace, seeming to remember that you probably didn’t want anyone else to see that.
Roope came strolling towards both of you a few seconds later. Seemingly unaware of what was going on just thirty seconds before. You couldn’t help but worry that he’d seen something, and he might mention it to one of the other guys.
You didn’t know what this meant for you and Tyler. Until you had some type of idea, you didn’t want anyone else to know. Until you and Tyler knew where you stood with one another, you couldn’t allow yourself to get your hopes up.
This could’ve easily been because you were lonely, both of you. Not to mention the fact that you had more history than you knew what to do with. That had to make it easier to fall back into step with one another, right?
“Hey, just in time man,” Tyler sounded unfazed.
You couldn’t bring yourself to look over at him. You couldn’t calm your racing heart either. You could still feel his hands and his lips all over you. Now you really weren’t sure if you could go back in there and make it through the night. You were almost sure you couldn’t now.
“Y/N and I were just talking, but we’re done now,” Tyler explained, “C’mon, Jamie should have the movie all ready, and everyone else should be here in a minute.”
During the movies, Ella sat curled up in Tyler’s lap. A good majority of the guys were pretty tipsy by the time Beauty and The Beast started, which made their commentary on it pretty hilarious. Ella even got a few of them to sing along to a few songs with her. And was even able to get Jamie to dance around the room with her for a while.
But the whole time you just kept thinking about that kiss, or whatever that was considered. What if he didn’t really want that, or it didn’t mean what you thought it did. Rather than the beginning of something, which scared you, what if it was the end of all of your years together. One final goodbye, a proper one this time. That scared you more than anything.
You tried to push him away for years. You knew that. But it took tonight to make you realize that you didn’t want him out of your life. You needed him. You wanted to go to sleep next to him and wake up with him in the morning. You wanted the late nights and the road trip facetimes. You wanted the life that you’d always planned with him.
You knew that this would be something you would’ve done every weekend, had certain things not happened. The guys would all come over and hang out with Ella, because they all loved her. You’d have family movie nights, just like you’d always planned. Nothing would’ve changed. Maybe, somehow, you and Tyler would’ve had more, and Ella would be a big sister. Maybe a lot of things would’ve happened.
You felt the stab of guilt again. You’d allowed this to happen. You were the one who called it quits. You’d never let yourself forget that. You couldn’t drag Tyler back down again. You wouldn’t be able to forgive yourself if you did. He didn’t need to feel the need to look after you anymore, you could deal with it all on your own. Somehow, you’d find a way. You’d made it this far, you could keep going.
“She’s out cold,” Tyler whispered once everyone else left, “Do you want me to carry her out to the car?”
You nodded, still not daring to look over at him. Even though you knew the sight of Ella curled up, fast asleep in his lap would melt your heart. If you looked, you’d want to stay, and you knew that. You couldn’t stay again, you didn’t have the willpower for it.
So, you followed him out to your car, not daring to say a word as he carefully buckled Ella into her car seat and shut the door behind him. You tried not to think of what the two of you were doing out here just a few hours before. But even just being back out here with him made you want to cry. You wanted it again, but you couldn’t do it.
“Y/N?”
You shut your eyes and shook your head. Whatever conversation was coming next, you didn’t have the strength to have it. In some ways, you were afraid he’d say goodbye, even though it was what you kept telling yourself you wanted. In other ways, you were terrified that he’d say that he still wanted you. You didn’t know how to navigate either of those things.
You felt his hands on your waist, pulling you closer to him, “Can you look at me?”
You shook your head again, squeezing your eyes tighter. You could feel the tears running down your cheeks. You could even taste them. All you wanted was to curl into a ball and just disappear. You couldn’t say goodbye to him, you couldn’t look him in the eye. There were a lot of things you couldn’t do, even though you wanted to.
“Please, just look at me,” You could hear his voice break, “Please Y/N.”
“I can’t,” Your voice was barely above a whisper, “I’ll want something I can’t have if I do.”
One hand moved to your cheek, slowly brushing away the tears. That simple thing made you want to cry even more. How could you keep resisting him when he made it so hard? If only he knew that he could break you. You were putty in his hands, all he had to do was say the words.
He leaned down to kiss you again. It was softer this time, slower too. There was no sense of urgency like there had been before. This time it felt like he was trying to convince you of something. Convince you that this could work, that he wanted it to work.
Your hands landed on his shoulders, holding them to keep you steady. If you thought the first kiss was enough to make you dizzy, this kiss would be the end of you. It was like you could feel everything he was trying to convey, and it scared you. But you couldn’t pull away from him, you didn’t want to. You might go to hell for it, but you wanted this.
“Tyler…we can’t. We-”
“We’ll figure it out,” he promised, “When things have gotten better for you, and they get your meds right, we’ll figure it out.”
“Tyler. We…I can’t do this. I don’t want to lose you again. We can’t do this to Ella.”
“I’m here, Y/N. I’m not going anywhere, you can try and push me away all you want, but I’m here. We’ll figure the rest out later.”
You held onto him, afraid to agree to anything right now, but terrified to get in your car and leave. You felt like the world was falling around you, but him and Ella were enough to keep you anchored. With them, you could figure it out. You just didn’t know how to deal with it.
But somehow, he made you believe that somehow the two of you could work it out. Somehow, after the last two years, you could find your way back to each other. Maybe this time you could be better than you were before. You could love each other more, despite being broken. Maybe, somehow, it would be okay.
“I love you,” he whispered to you, “I’m right here. And I love you.”
For now, that was enough.

Control
can I do a request with Jason able to control people by them looking into his eyes, with their own turning green because the pit gave him powers n’ such. It’s kept secret until the other robins find him using it to gain info on Riddlers plan? (Which is to kidnap the reader or bruce. Or both.) It’s a lot to ask but please?
Jason was a very important person in your life. So when Bruce told you he died you were devastated. When you found out he was alive you were ecstatic. But ever since he came back he seemed to be keeping secrets from you. You asked the boys and Bruce but they all told you that he seemed fine, Alfred was with you on this though. He knows the boys better than anything in the world.
Every time you confronted him about it he would just ignore it or reassure you it was nothing. After a while, you decided to drop it. He would tell you when he was ready.
This month was a fairly quiet month, which meant trouble. The Riddler escaped from Arkham and was now planning something, but no one knew what. So to drag him out of his hiding spot Bruce planned a gala. That meant dealing with rich snobs while on the lookout for a madman.
Jason, Cass, and Steph were outside keeping watch while you, Tim, Damian, Duke, and Dick were inside. Jason didn’t like the idea of you being by yourself so you stayed away from the crowd. Not like you had any friends available to join you.
An hour had passed and nothing happened. Everyone was getting on edge.
“Shouldn’t he be here by now?” Tim asked through the earpiece.
“Maybe he didn’t get the memo?” Duke answered. You chuckled as you took a sip of your drink.
“The gala was announced to happen at least three weeks ago. He got the memo,” Bruce said.
“Then where is he?” Stephanie asked.
“Waiting for an opportunity maybe,” you said. “It’s not like he can just waltz in here.”
Not even a minute later the sound of people screaming in fear filled the building. Everyone jumped into action. You, Damian, and Duke helped civilians get out while everyone else went to deal with the main problem.
After getting everyone out and giving your declarations to the cops you all went to the Batcave to investigate the evidence Bruce and the rest collected. Which was only a note, a green note to be more specific.
“So all he was going to do was cause panic?” Jason asked, walking behind you to hug you.
“To cause panic and leave a message,” Tim answered. “Look he left an address.”
“Dillion Avenue? That’s specific.”
Bruce took the note from Tim and put it in one of his pockets. “It’s by Upper East Side. Damian, Dick, Tim suit up.”
“What about the rest of us?” You asked annoyed. There was no way you were going to miss out on punching Riddler.
“You, Duke, and Cass go home and rest, the city will probably need you during the day. Spoiler and Red Hood will serve as backup if we need it.”
“Of course I’m backup,” Jason mumbled as Bruce walked towards the batmobile. You sighed and turned to give him a hug, which he gladly accepted.
“Don’t worry backup buddy we’ll just follow them,” Steph said.
“Why?”
“Do you want to be backup Jason? Knowing them they’ll probably get themselves killed and Tim hasn’t slept in a week.”
Jason looked down at you and gave you a kiss, “Is that okay babe?”
“Yeah, just be safe you idiots,” you said returning the kiss.
Jason and Stephanie left the cave as you, Duke and Cass went upstairs for some of Alfred’s famous cookies.
“Was that a smart idea. y/n?” Duke asked.
“Nope, but it’s better than having them destroying the cave with glitter and paint,” you replied.
“True, besides, what trouble can they get into?” Cass said.
If there was one thing the batboys could easily find it would be trouble. Apparently, the Riddler set up an ambush knowing that Batman would show up. Good thing that Spoiler and Red Hood showed up when they did though. After kicking ass, handcuffing Nygma and letting the cops take him away Batman and the batboys made their way over the Police Department, even though Jason isn’t liked by the cops.
“Nygma why did you attack Bruce Wayne’s charity gala?” Commissioner Gordon asked.
“How about instead you answer a riddle! Riddle me this….”
“Can we go one day without riddles?” Jason interrupted while glaring at him from under the helmet.
“Yes but I need to keep all of you occupied!”
“Why?” Bruce demanded.
“Cobblepot.”
“What about him?”
“He’s paying me to keep you distracted.”
“From what?” Jason asked him walking closer towards him.
“He wants to kidnap a certain birdie’s heroic significant other and Wayne’s beloved family friend of course!”
Jason stopped glaring at Nygma and sprinted out of the interrogation room with Damian right behind him.
“Red Hood! Robi… Dammit. Commissioner, Nightwing go check if what Riddler said is true,” Bruce said running after his children. Dick, Tim and commissioner Gordon stood in the room in confusion until Riddler spoke up acting all confused as to what happened.
“I didn’t tell you crap!” He insisted. Red Robin pulled up the camera feed and showed it to him. And of course, there he was confessing.
“…………….My eyes are not that green.”
Red Robin looked at the feed and saw that the Riddlers eye color changed when Jason started talking to him, but when he left they went back to their original eye color.
“Nightwing lets go,” He said walking out of the room.
“Go where?” Gordon asked.
“save s/h/n and talk to Penguin.”
“Wait, s/h/n… is s/h/n y/n?”
“Perhaps, I don’t know, s/h/n is mean, y/n is nice. So no,” Nightwing answered. Nightwing, Red Robin, and the Commissioner all went to Penguins nightclub and things got interesting.
Jason paced the Batcave as Bruce typed away looking for Cobblepots location. “Please tell me you found something?”
“Calm down Jason. We’ll find her. Nightwing and Red Robin are on their way to the Iceberg Lounge.”
“How do you want me to calm down when the love of my life is in the hands of that bastard?!?!”
“Tt. Pacing around the cave isn’t going to help to find them, Todd,” Damian stated. Jason stopped pacing and groaned. If only he’d stay instead with you.
“I managed to save parts of the security feed,” Bruce said pulling the feed up on the computer. Damian and Jason ran next to Bruce and looked at the screen.
You were helping Alfred take care of Ace, Alfred the Cat, and Titus after Duke and Cass went home. A couple minutes later the main door was blown off its hinges by bullets. Multiple of Cobblepots henchmen ran in and began to fight with you and Alfred. Little did they know that Damian had trained all his beloved pets to attack idiotic intruders like them. You put up a good fight before one of them got the jump on you and knocked you out cold. They managed to get away with you before the dogs mauled them to death.
Bruce switched feed to the cameras outside where they basically threw you in a van and drove away.
“Is that all?” Jason asked.
“Everything else was deleted. I’m sorry.”
Jason walked towards his motorcycle and got on. “Where are you going?” Bruce asked him.
“I’m going to catch up with Dick and Tim,” Jason said pulling out of the cave. Damian was gonna go after him but Bruce held him back.
“Don’t.”
“But father…”
“He has it handled.”
You mentally cursed at every person in the room with you. If your mom were a psychic she would be disappointed. Very disappointed. You pulled at the ropes that held you onto the chair and yelled in frustration.
“When I get out of here I’m going to make you pay!”
“You’re all bark no bite Miss/Mr. Todd. You’re boyfriend on the other hand… Oh, that boy has caused me some major problems,” Cobblepot said walking around you like a wolf stalking a doe. But you were no defenseless doe, you were a badass vigilante with a badass boyfriend who hated Cobblepots ass. So who was in trouble now?
“Your problems with him don’t involve me at all. I don’t interfere with your work. Why kidnap me. Better yet, how did you figure out I was s/h/n?”
“HA! There are people out there who know Jason. A couple thousand dollars was enough to buy the information I needed to figure out his weakness,” he said pointing his umbrella at you, “and you sweetie, are it.”
You glared at the short, fat, sad man in front of you then laughed. “Me? His weakness? Honey, you must’ve eaten some bad fish because I. Am. Not. His. Weakness.”
“That’s not what my sources tell me.”
Whoever his sources were, they were a bunch of snitches.
You rolled your eyes and looked away from him. The fact that the entire batfam fell into his trap surprised you. What surprised you more was that when you looked back at Cobblepot his eyes were a nice emerald color instead of black.
“Uhh, Penguin? You okay?” you asked.
“Why yes, you know what free them,” he replied. His henchmen looked at you then at their boss before untying you. You stood up and rubbed your wrists in an attempt to make the pain go away. A tall broody guy grabbed your shoulder and walked you to one of the backdoors. You walked out of the building a bit scared and confused. But that all went away when Nightwing approached.
“Hey, are you okay?!”
“I guess?”
“What do you mean ‘I guess’? Did he do anything to you?”
“Besides letting me go no.”
Nightwing stood there shocked until Red Hood appeared behind you. You turned around and hugged your boyfriend.
“Hey are you okay?” he asked you.
“Yeah, just tired.”
“Okay lovebirds lets go! Bab’s dad is waiting for us so he can go arrest Penguin but that won’t happen if we stay here all night!”
After the Commissioner arrested Penguin and got your testimony Jason took you home to rest, but not before Tim pulled you to the side and showed you the same video he showed Riddler.
When you got home you decided to ask Jason about it so Tim wouldn’t just bluntly tell everyone that “Jason is a meta!” That would end badly.
“Jay can I ask you something?” you said.
“Is it about what happened with Riddler and Penguin?”
“Yes.”
“Jay can I ask you something?” you said.
“Is it about what happened with Riddler and Penguin?”
“Yes.”
Jason sighed and took off his helmet. “I… ever since I was revived by the pit I got powers. I can control people. Manipulate them to tell me something or do something.”
“Why didn’t you tell me earlier?!?!”
“I was afraid you would leave me,” he whispered.
You took the helmet from his hands and tossed it onto the living room couch. You gently cupped his face and kissed him. “I could care less if you have powers or not. I love you and nothing is going to be able to change that.”

← previous | series masterlist | next → word count: 4,818 summary: peter is suffering and failing english. that’s it, that’s the plot. warnings: see masterlist (graphic-ish description of injuries) read it on ao3 add yourself to my taglist!
━━━━━━━━
There was nothing Peter could do about the fact that his brain was literally decaying.
Okay, not literally. He may have had a headache, but he was pretty sure that his brain wasn’t actually rotting. God, he could almost hear Professor Williams correcting him on the use of the word. How insufferable.
But that was just more proof, further evidence to back up his (very poor) argument. He couldn’t even use words correctly; how could anyone expect him to pass English? There were so many more important things he could have been focusing on.
Like the fact that that he had finally kind of gotten used to the head rush that came with sitting cross-legged on his ceiling for five hours. He’d been steadily increasing the time he spent up there aimlessly scrolling through his Twitter feed, trying to see how long he could last. It was his own personal experiment of sorts—Peter was a scientist, after all. He had hypothesized that he could only last about three hours at most. But to his surprise he’d managed to go a solid four and a half before he gave out and threw up all over the floor of his dorm, though not before falling into it. His room reeked of bleach and Windex for a week. And after days of hard work and the sheer power of his unrelenting stubbornness, he’d finally managed to go the full five and walk away from it with little more than a headache and seeing a few spots. He wasn’t sure what he could do with this information but he was more than ready to find out.
Those were the kinds of things that occupied the space in Peter’s mind. That and an innumerable amount of calculus formulas and chemical compounds and on and on and on. If he just started writing all the information he stored in that little Parker brain of his, he’d fill an entire collection of encyclopedias without even trying. Now, with that in mind (feel free to groan at that awful joke), did it seem reasonable that he should pay any attention to try and compare two completely different plays from an era that should no longer concern anyone in this day and age on their employment of dramatic irony?
If one were as sane as Peter—although he could almost guarantee his sanity was diminishing by the day—they would undoubtedly agree with him when he said absolutely not. But frankly, it wasn’t up to him.
And so that was how Ned found him: cross-legged on the ceiling, with his back against the wall above his bed, his face as bright as a ripe tomato and with a worried expression that seemed to be carved in stone. But he had every right to freak out. He was failing English.
“You know, that’s not gonna help.”
Ned dropped his bag on the floor next to the spot on the carpet that was whiter than the rest, and then fell back onto Peter’s bed with a soft grunt, folding his arms under the pillow behind his head and gazing up at his best friend’s face about a foot above him.
“Nothing helps,” Peter groaned, unfolding his legs and stretching them out along the ceiling, the rough surface catching softly on the denim. “You know, I’ve come to think that maybe ending it all might be my only option.”
“Oh yeah, you could do that,” Ned mused, feigning deep thought. “But then who’d take over for the one and only web-slinger?”
“God, I hate it when you have a point.”
As if he actually considered it, even for a second. If there was anything more unbearable to Peter than trying to write about anything even remotely related to his English course, it was the thought of not being around to be the friendly neighbourhood super hero he’d promised to be. He had a city to protect. But it was also a long running joke between them that Peter would one day swing up high over the streets of New York and then neglect to catch himself on the way down. He couldn’t remember when it started.
Peter stood then, stepping a few paces to his left in order to drop off the ceiling without landing on Ned, and with a quick flip he was on the proper side of the world where the normal people were. His head throbbed, all the warmth that had gathered there beginning to flow back down to where it was supposed to be and the pressure behind his eyes subsiding. He glanced at Ned, who had closed his eyes and looked rather peaceful on Peter’s unmade, messy sheets.
“So have you thought about what you’re actually gonna do?” he questioned.
Peter sighed. “Nothing. That’s what I’m gonna do.”
Ned sat up then, looking at him incredulously as if he’d just told him that there were vines sprouting from his ears. “Dude, you gotta do something.”
“Says who?”
“Says the school. You know English is mandatory, right? They won’t let you enroll next semester if you don’t pass.”
“So I’ve been told.”
Peter peeked at the clock on the small desk across the room, and though it was almost completely obscured by loose papers and notebooks that he never thought to put away, he still saw the bright green block numbers displaying the time. 4:43 PM. Nearly time to go.
As he rummaged through his school bag looking for the new prototype webbing cartridges he’d designed, he felt Ned’s gaze on him from the way the hairs at the base of his neck stood on end. The feeling that Ned wanted to say something but couldn’t bring himself to was making the air around Peter palpable. He felt the tension on his skin, eyes nearly watering at the way it stung the inside of his nostrils and he detested the way it made his mouth feel like it was stuffed with cotton balls. Though his heightened senses saved him from getting killed on a nearly daily basis, they always seemed to act up at really, really inopportune moments. Such as this one.
He felt Ned’s words before he heard them.
“Do you need help?”
Peter frowned, his brows coming together. “What, like a tutor?”
“Yeah, or something like that,” Ned replied. “I’m asking because I know someone, you know, if you ever manage to swallow your pride and accept the fact that you can’t get out of this by yourself.”
“Ouch.”
“I believe this is what the kids call ‘tough love’.”
Ned looked at him for a long time. Now that he was right side up it was easy to pinpoint all the warning signs that there was something terribly wrong. The bags under Peter’s eyes had always been there; those dark crescent moons etched into the creases there by many nights spent swinging through the streets of the bustling city, stopping crime whenever it had the audacity to crop up, had become a permanent feature on his face. But there was something else, something far more concerning in the way his shoulders stayed perpetually close to his ears, an undeniable tension tugging his entire frame upward as if he was being pulled up by a tight string.
And when he turned to face Ned once more, the crease between his brows that had been there since he’d been sitting on the ceiling was still present, if not more prominent. He was only nineteen, but Peter was going to end up with wrinkles soon if he didn’t stop frowning all the damn time.
“I’m worried about you.”
His expression softened, his features relaxing at his friend’s words. “I know.”
“You look like shit,” Ned continued, though his tone held the same care.
“I know.”
“You’re so frustrating.”
Peter smiled, plucking the mask of his suit off his desk and flipping it so it was facing the right way again, hiding the circuits and wires that lined nearly the entirety of the fabric. He brushed his arm across the desk, clearing space and knocking papers, books, pencils, rolls of solder and even a sock to the floor in the process. If looking at him wasn’t proof enough that something had been troubling him, then one only needed to step into the catastrophe that was his dorm. But to be fair, did anyone keep their dorm sparkling? He didn’t think so. He fished the red and blue suit out of the top right corner of his small closet and smoothed it over the area he’d cleared of clutter. Ned watched as he carefully slipped the cartridges into their holders at the hip.
“I’m serious though,” he pressed on, not missing the way Peter’s ears twitched in annoyance. “I’ve got a friend who could help you.”
“I barely have money to buy food, Ned,” Peter sighed. “I seriously doubt I’d be able to afford a tutor.”
“She owes me a favour anyway. She wouldn’t make you pay.”
He turned back to face Ned, eyebrows raised. “What makes you think she’d even be willing to help me?”
“Oh, please.” With a roll of his eyes, Ned reached into his back pocket and pulled out his phone, scrolling through what Peter could only assume was his contact list. “Would I even be friends with someone that cold hearted?”
“I don’t know, last time I checked we were still friends with MJ.”
“She’d punch you if she heard that.”
“Countin’ on it.”
He held up the suit by the shoulders then, the baggy material looking drab and uninteresting and frankly kind of ridiculous. Throwing it on the bed at Ned’s feet, he tugged the hem of his ESU hoodie up and over his head, his t-shirt and pants coming off shortly after. He discarded the clothes on his floor with little regard as to where they ended up. Ned moved around him as Peter tugged on the loose suit. He set up his laptop on the desk and pulled a textbook out of his backpack. This part of their routine was easy, comfortable even. It had integrated itself into their lives just as easily as everything else did.
Peter tapped the spider emblem on his chest, sucking in a quick breath as the material of the suit formed to his body and hugged his limbs. He turned to grab the mask but found Ned already holding it out to him, a worried expression on his face.
He took it carefully. “Thanks.”
Ned only nodded, swivelling around in Peter’s desk chair and opening up the textbook he’d placed next to the laptop. Something was off and it was making Peter’s skin crawl more than usual. He looked carefully at the back of Ned’s head, his words only being held back by his teeth and his tight jaw. If he opened his mouth, there would be no stopping. But what the hell, right? Ned was his best friend.
“Give her a call,” he said finally, and Ned turned to him with a smile. “If you think it’ll help, I don’t see why I shouldn’t try.”
“I hope you know I’m doing this for your own good,” he grinned, pulling his phone out again and looking for her contact.
“Yeah.”
Peter would always admire just how much his best friend had matured since sophomore year. Sure he still geeked out over Star Wars and comic books (but then again, so did Peter) but there was no doubt in his mind that Ned had simply… grown. As person, as a best friend, as his guy in the chair; Ned went from nervously helping Peter with whatever ridiculous idea he’d had that week to either fully supporting him or calling him a fucking idiot when he was being one. Ned was the one person he could always count on to be there for him.
“Hey,” he called, his foot on the windowsill and hand gripping the frame, backpack slung lazily over one shoulder. “You’re here if I need you, right?”
Ned smiled, tucking his earbuds in and firing up the laptop. “Yeah, always.”
Peter grinned back, slipping on the mask and throwing up a peace sign before he jumped out the window of his dorm. Luckily, his dorm only faced an alley between the residences and no one was around to see him crawling up the side of the brick.
When he reached the rooftop, he sat for a moment admiring the autumn sunset, the warm orange hues washing the city with vibrant yet calm energy. Though he knew that this was but a mirage, and New York was nothing if not a complete disaster, he couldn’t help but think of a city at peace. Maybe one day he’d accomplish it, and hang up the webs one last time. But he doubted it’d come any time soon.
“Pete?”
“Yeah?”
Ned’s voice was soft through the comm system, and Peter could almost hear the frown on his face. “Be careful, yeah?”
Peter grinned, his heads up display focusing and zooming in on a group of men standing near the edge of Washing Square Park, a scared looking girl at their feet and trying desperately to back away on her hands. Why were they always stupid enough to assault someone in broad daylight in the middle of a park? They were almost begging for a beating.
He webbed his backpack to a wall in the alleyway below him, then shot a web at the next roof over and pulled himself forward, landing gracefully on the balls of his feet and using the momentum to launch himself into the air. His head buzzed with the rush of air whizzing past his ears. He flipped once, twice, then landed in a crouch in front of the girl, fingertips on the ground with one arm extended to the side to help his balance, shielding her from the attackers. He could’ve sworn they could see his smirk through the mask, because their faces paled comically.
“Always am.”
━━━━━━━━
“Hello?”
“Listen, you know that favour you owe me? Yeah, I’d like to cash that in now.”
“Oh I’m great, Ned, thanks for asking. How are you?”
“Y/N….” Ned whined, dragging out the last syllable. “It’s important.”
Y/N laughed, switching her cell phone from her right ear to her left, and pressing it in place with her shoulder as she poured herself a cup of coffee. She finally felt that she had room to breathe now that midterms were over and she had the weekend off from work. The library staff room was warm and cozy despite the chilly November weather, so all she really wanted to do was sit down on the couch with one of the new fiction arrivals that she’d unpacked that afternoon for a good little while, but she’d been interrupted when her phone rang.
The strong yet comfortable smell of bitter black coffee filled the small room, and she watched as the cream she poured into her mug swirled and mixed with the dark liquid. “Alright, alright. What’s up?”
She was so positive of the fact that Ned was beaming that she would have bet everything she had on it, and when he spoke she could see his silly smile in her mind’s eye.
“Okay, so, you remember Peter, right?” Ned asked, and Y/N frowned as she opened the fridge door to put the cream back.
“Haven’t met him but you’ve told me about him,” she said. “Childhood best friend or something, right?”
“The one and only. Anyway he’s kind of in a tight spot right now.”
“How so?”
“He’s failing English.”
Y/N smiled knowingly then, settling down on the rather ugly but still surprisingly soft beige couch in the centre of the room, the bright blue mug in her hands warming her to the bone. She knew instantly what the phone call was about and what Ned was going to ask of her, yet she feigned ignorance. Why? For her own amusement, she supposed.
“And you called me because…?”
“You’ve been talking about wanting to tutor people on the side… right? But I figured you might want to test how comfortable you are doing it before you start charging people.”
“And you’re suggesting that Peter would be my guinea pig?”
“...Yes, in a way.”
“Is he okay with that?” she asked, setting her phone down on the small foot table in front of her and putting the phone on speaker. She was all alone in the staff room, and there were only a handful of students and two other staff members in the building at the moment so she wouldn’t need to worry about disturbing anyone. That, and her neck was starting to ache.
Ned’s sigh confirmed her suspicions, that he had somehow convinced Peter into agreeing to being tutored even though he didn’t want to. She wasn’t sure why, but Y/N felt her stomach tug at the thought. But that was ridiculous—she didn’t even know the kid.
“I kinda had to beg him,” he admitted rather sheepishly. “He’s just… so stubborn and it- it’s infuriating. They’re not gonna let him back next semester if he doesn’t pass this time because he failed both times last year but honestly, I feel like he doesn’t even care.”
“Hmm.” Y/N knew the type of person Peter was just from the little information Ned had just shared with her. He was headstrong and stubborn, but only made time for things he enjoyed and had genuine interest in, which evidently did not include English. “What’s he studying right now?”
“Double major in Chemistry, and Molecular Biology and Biochemistry.”
“Jesus. That gave me a headache.”
“I know, gross, right? I always told him he should’ve done Com-Sci like me, and maybe he’d be less stressed, but he never listens to me. He’s actually the smartest person I know when he wants to be, but when he doesn’t…”
“Yeah, I get it,” she sighed. “Well, I’m free all weekend if he wants to meet up at the library. I was gonna stay far away from this place since I have a few days off, but I’m afraid I can’t abandon my books for too long anyway.”
“You have no idea how much this means to us, Y/N,” Ned sighed. “Thank you.”
“Yeah, yeah,” she grinned, mostly to herself though since no one could see her. “I feel like this is more important to you than it is to him, though.”
“That makes two of us. Hey, can I give him your number?”
“Sure, go ahead. Tell him to text me, yeah?”
“He will. And if he doesn’t, I’ll make him.”
Y/N giggled at that, sipping on her coffee and relishing in the warmth that slid down her throat. She dreaded leaving the library and stepping into the cold autumn air. She wanted to stay holed up on that couch forever. “Alright, dude, I gotta go. I’ll never leave if I stay here any longer and I still have to read a couple chapters of a new book tonight.”
“Yeah, for sure. I’ll see you around this week?”
“My door’s always open for you,” she smiled, knowing that Ned’s dorm room was only a few floors below hers and he’d often pop by to visit her while she studied. “See ya.”
“Bye, my guy.”
Y/N wondered if everyone felt that odd silence after hanging up a phone call, that lingering stillness that felt a little too quiet, especially when she was alone. It made the skin of her arms prickle with goosebumps and she shivered, putting her things back into her backpack and tugging it onto her shoulder. Quickly knocking back the rest of her coffee, she grabbed her scarf off the hook on the wall and laid it lazily around her neck once, still too warm inside the building to put it on properly.
As she stepped out of the staff room, the warm atmosphere of the library engulfed her once more and she smiled as she stepped toward the main desk. Carol, her boss and the school’s head librarian, was typing away at the computer and busy signing out a laptop to a student. Y/N slid behind the desk, grabbing a copy of the new book she wanted to read and began to sign it out to herself on one of the unoccupied desktops as Carol thanked the student and let him know that he needed to bring the laptop back by the following evening. When she was done, she glanced at Y/N with a smile.
“Oh, tell me how that one is,” she said when she saw the book. “It caught my eye but I’m not sure if I’ll have time to read it. If it’s a worthwhile read, however, I’ll make time.”
“Will do.”
Carol was a kind woman, who looked so stereotypically like a librarian it almost made Y/N laugh when they’d met. Her greying auburn hair was always tied into a tight knot on her head, and her wire-framed glasses were always slipping too far down her nose. She wore cardigans and capris pants almost everyday, and Y/N was pretty sure she only owned one pair of beige shoes. But she was caring and sweet, never shushing anyone when they laughed too loudly or if they swore when they dropped a particularly heavy encyclopedia on their foot. She was one of the main reasons Y/N liked her job so much and never said no when Carol asked her to come in a little bit early or stay a little while longer. She was practically her second mother, and the library was her home away from home.
“I’ll see you on Monday, dear?” Carol asked as Y/N picked up her shoulder bag.
“No, actually,” she grinned. “I’ll see you this weekend.”
“Oh?”
“Yeah.” She looked at her Converse clad feet and the fraying bottom of her pant legs, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. “I’m tutoring a friend of a friend as a favour. He’s failing English and, you know me- I have an obligation to make everyone enjoy literature.”
“You and I both,” Carol smiled, the crinkles on the outside corners of her eyes folding and making her look like a sweet grandmother (she totally was sweet, though a grandmother only to her cat’s kittens, perhaps). “I do hope you go out and enjoy yourself this weekend, though. Every time I see you, you have your nose stuck in a book. And you know I do encourage that but you should really stretch your legs, go out and have some fun.”
“I find reading very fun,” Y/N smiled, tucking the book into her bag.
“Oh, I’m well aware.”
She turned, walking backwards toward the library doors so she could wave to Carol. “See you soon then!”
“I’ll be here, as always,” Carol grinned.
It was dark when she stepped out of the building, the cold air hitting her like a wall and chilling her to her very core. She hugged her school hoodie around herself, tugging her scarf tighter and tucking it into the collar. The only downfall of studying at Empire State was that since the campus was in the centre of Greenwich, it was spread out over quite a few blocks. It would be a fifteen minute walk back to her dorm building, even if she cut through the park. So Y/N tucked in her earbuds and set off, stuffing her hands into the soft pocket of her hoodie and trying to keep as warm as possible.
By the time she arrived to her building on 7th Avenue, her fingers were numb as she held the keycard over the sensor. She was sure her nose looked like a cherry tomato with how cold it’d gotten on the walk. Making a mental note to buy herself a pair of mittens for the upcoming winter, she stepped into the elevator and hit the button for the sixth floor. She estimated it to be a little past 10 PM, considering her shift ended at 9:30 and she’d spent some time talking to both Ned and Carol before she left. But luckily, that meant there would be nobody in the common room.
Setting her bag down on the couch in her floor’s common lounge area, she took out the lunch she’d forgotten to eat and sat down with her book resting on her knees and her sandwich in her lap.
She’d spent so many nights this way, it almost became routine for her now. She nestled into her usual corner, facing the glass walls that allowed her to see out into the hallway and took a bite of her food as she turned to chapter one. She yawned, already used to feeling tired after work and figuring that a good book would help her relax.
And relax she did.
Y/N was unsure just how much time had passed when she woke with a start, her book clattering to the ground next to her with the movement of her body.
“Shit,” she muttered, picking it up and making sure that no pages had bent when it hit the ground. She glanced at the clock on the wall. 4:07 AM. God, had she really been there for that long? There was a kink in her neck where it had lolled back in her sleep, and she rubbed it as she took in her surroundings. It seemed like no one had been in the room since she’d arrived.
It wasn’t until she looked up, however, that she really startled.
There, in the hallway on the other side of the glass, frozen like a deer caught in headlights, stood a boy who looked like he’d been beaten within an inch of his life.
Y/N’s breath caught in her throat as they gazed at each other, both equally shocked. It was then that she realized that it was the sound of him almost falling flat on his face, but catching himself against a wall with a sharp, pained shout before he landed that woke her up. He was still gripping the wall, knuckles white with the sheer force of his grasp, his other arm clutched around his ribs. Neither of them expected the other to be there.
He looked like he’d been hit by a bus. Or maybe hit by a bus, but then the bus turned around and drove over him another three or four times for good measure. One of his eyes was swollen shut, the skin around and under it beaten blue and purple, and yellowing at the edges. The blood from his crooked nose dripped onto his mouth and chin, down his neck and staining the collar of his t-shirt, which had some ridiculous math pun on it that Y/N would have rolled her eyes at if she hadn’t been so shocked by the state of him. His arms were littered with what looked like bruises in the form of fingers, as if someone had grabbed him and thrown him around. There were cuts and bruises all over the rest of his face, and his short brown hair stuck up at an odd angle as if he’d just taken off a beanie. He wore a backpack that looked like it was one throw to the ground away from ripping at the seams and, for whatever reason, he wasn’t wearing shoes.
They both sat in silence until he looked away, his shocked eyes then taking on a droopy, tired expression as he limped down the hall, his hand still supporting almost the entire weight of his body against the wall. His bare feet dragged against the hall floor, leaving dirt and blood behind on the linoleum. Y/N choked on her breath as she exhaled, not having noticed that she’d even been holding it.
What the fuck? What the fuck?
She scrambled to her feet, the book now long forgotten as it fell to the floor once again, and she fumbled with the doorknob as it slipped in her sweaty palms. When she finally got the door open, she stared down the hallway in the direction he’d gone, but she was met with nothing but an empty corridor.
Where could he possibly have gone that fast?
She stepped carefully and quietly, making sure to keep her footfalls as light as possible, as she walked in the direction she’d seen him go. She passed each door, looking for any sign that he might have been there, when finally she stopped in front of one with blood on the silver handle. Glancing up at the name tag that adorned every door, Y/N swallowed the dry lump in her throat and her eyes widened as she took in the name.
Peter P.
Oh dear God. What the hell did she just herself into?

Here are some articles that our readers enjoyed most and have recommended further in the past month:
Smashing Newsletter: Weekly Best Picks And News
We’ve got news! We’ll be sending out a weekly edition of the Smashing Newsletter, but aiming for shorter and topic-specific issues. These may be dedicated to accessibility, or CSS, or UX — you’ll just have to wait and see! We want to bring you useful content, and to share all the cool things that we see folks doing across communities within the web industry. No third-party mailings or hidden advertising, and your support really helps us pay the bills.

The State Of Things In 2020
With so much happening on the web every day, it’s difficult to keep track, but it’s even more difficult to pause for a moment, and a take a detailed look at where we actually are at the moment. Luckily, there are plenty of surveys and reports gathering some specific developments in a single place. State of CSS and State of JS highlight common trends in CSS and JavaScript. There are also studies on Design Systems in 2019, Front-End Tooling and Open Source Security.
It’s good to know where you stand not only in terms of skills, but also in terms of salaries: that’s where Levels.FYI Salaries helps, as well as UX Designer Salaries and Design Census 2019. Plus, make sure to review State of Remote Work 2020, highlighting trends of how to make remote work more efficient. Word of caution: some of them might be biased due to the demographics that they are targeting, so please take the insights with a grain of doubt.
Diving Into HTML And CSS Vocabs
If you often find yourself looking up the correct word to use for that one particular thing in your CSS and HTML code, we’re sure you’ll bookmark the following resources right away. Thanks to Ville V. Vanninen, you can now learn the difference between doctypes, attribute names, tags, media features — all in an interactive way.
You’ll find a nice interactive list of CSS terms as well as another useful one dedicated to HTML vocabulary where you can click on any of the terms shown on the right side to highlight the relevant parts in the code sample presented on the page. The lists are also available in different languages.
Practical Tips For Rebranding A Product
Do we rebrand? And when is the right time to do so? A lot of product people are asking themselves these questions as their product becomes more mature. The team at Overflow was in the same situation a while ago.
To reflect the evolution of their product from an easy-to-use, practical flow diagramming tool into a tool that is used for design communication and presentation workflows, they decided that it was time for a rebranding. In the article “Evolving the Overflow Brand”, they share their approach and what they learned along the way. Interesting ideas and takeaways that you can incorporate into your own redesign process. One that particularly helps make the challenge more approachable: Think of your product as a human being and imagine what they are like and how they feel to visualize your brand’s new identity.
Disabled Buttons And How To Do Better
“Disabled buttons suck.” It’s a strong statement that Hampus Sethfors makes against this widespread UI pattern. As Hampus argues, disabled buttons usually harm the user experience, causing irritation and confusion when nothing happens when a button that carries an action word like “Send” is clicked. But they do not only prevent people from completing tasks with as little effort as possible, disabled buttons also create barriers for people with disabilities — due to issues with low contrast and assistive technologies not being able to navigate to disabled buttons. Now, how can we do better?
Hampus suggests to keep buttons enabled by default and show an error message when a user clicks it. If you want to indicate that a button is disabled, you could use CSS to make it look a bit grayed out (considering contrast, of course) but keep it enabled and put focus on a meaningful error message. A small detail that makes a difference.
The “Back” Button UX
We often spend quite a bit of time to get a feature just right, or enhance the design with bold interactive features. We measure the impact of our decisions in A/B tests, study conversion and click-through-rates, analyze traffic and search for common funnel issues. But the data conveys just a part of the story. More often than not, customers have very different issues, often unrelated with our features or design.
The quality of an experience shows in situations when something goes unexpectedly. What happens when the customer accidentally reloads the page in the middle of a checkout, e.g. when scrolling up and down on a mobile phone? Does the payment form get cleared out as a user notices a name’s typo on a review page? What happens when a customer hits the “Back” button in a multi-step-process within our single-page-application?
In fact, the unexpected “Back” button behavior often has severe usability issues, and some of them are highlighted in Baymard Institute’s article Design Patterns That Violate “Back” Button Expectations. It’s worth testing the “Back” button for overlays, lightboxes, anchor links and content jumps, infinite scroll and “load more” behavior, filtering and sorting, accordions, checkout and inline editing.
We can use the HTML5 History API, or specifically history.pushState() to invoke a URL change without a page reload. The article goes into detail highlighting common issues and solutions to get things just right. Worth reading and bookmarking, and coming back to every now and again.
Modern CSS Solutions For Old Problems
When it comes to layout and styling, some problems keep appearing in every other project — styling checkboxes and radio buttons, fluid type scale, custom list styles or accessible dropdown navigation.
In her series, Modern CSS, Stephanie Eckles dives into modern CSS solutions for old CSS problems, taking a closer look into each of them, and exploring the most reliable techniques to make things work well in modern browsers. Stephanie also provides demos and ready-to-be-used code snippets. A fantastic series worth checking out and subscribing to!
Fun With Forms
Web forms are literally everywhere — from subscription forms to filters and dashboards, yet they aren’t easy to get right. How do we deal with inline validation? Where and how do we display error messages? How do we design and build autocomplete controls? No wonder that there is no shortage in resources on form design — and there are a few new ones that appeared recently.
Geri Reid has collected Form Design Guidelines, with best practices, research insights, resources and examples. In Fun With Forms, Michael Scharnagl collect a few obscure facts and fun things to do with forms. Adam Silver has been writing quite a bit about web form best practices in his blog — and release a web forms design system, too. Finally, Heydon Pickering still has some inclusive components patterns for forms in his blog. All wonderful resources to keep track of when designing or building forms — to ensure we don’t make costly mistakes down the line.
A CSS-Only, Animated, Wrapping Underline
Underlines are hard, especially if you want to do something that goes beyond the good ol’ text-decoration: underline. Inspired by a hover effect he saw in the link underline on Cassie Evans’ blog, Nicky Meulemann decided to create something similar: a colored underline with a hover effect where the line retreats and is replaced by a differently colored line.
The twist: The lines should not touch during the animation and, most importantly, links that wrap onto new lines should have the underline beneath all lines. If you want to follow along step by step how it’s done, be sure to check out Nicky’s tutorial.
A Guide To Setting Up A Development Workflow On Mac
Setting up a development environment on a new computer can be confusing, not only if you’re new to programming. Together with contributors from the web community, Sourabh Bajaj published a comprehensive guide that helps you get the job done with ease.
The guide is a reference for everyone who wants to set up an environment or install new languages or libraries on a Mac. From Homebrew to Node, Python, C++, Ruby, and a lot more, it takes you step by step through everything you need to know to get things up and running. Contributions to the guide are welcome.

With so much going on, we’ve made it our mission to help you stay on top of things. Of course, you can follow us on social media and subscribe to our RSS feed, but it’s nice to have an overview of the most important things in one place.
Improvement is a matter of steady, ongoing iteration. If you’ve been around for a good while, you’ll know that Smashing has been through a good number of changes in the past: a new design, a new layout, a new technical stack, and so much more. Still, it was always done with quality content in mind.
For example, we recently rearranged the navigation bar at the top of the page — have you noticed? Take a closer look, and you’ll find some neatly curated guides on major topics covered in the magazine, conference talks, and elsewhere. Each guide brings together the best we have on that subject, to help you explore and learn. And speaking of guides, we just published a comprehensive SEO guide earlier today!
Alongside our guides, printed books, eBooks and printed magazine, we’re thrilled to have yet another addition to our smashingly cherished gems: meet our brand new Interface Design Patterns Checklists. These may be dedicated to accessibility, or CSS, or UX — you’ll just have to wait and see!

14 Time-Saving Tools for Managing Your Twitter Following
According to Hootsuite, Twitter has 145 million monetizable daily active users, and that number is growing. This and the open nature of the ecosystem makes it a great platform to put content in front of your ideal customers. At the same time, the Twitterverse is fast-paced. In fact, Moz estimates that the average lifespan of a tweet is only 18 minutes, which means that your posts have less time to capture their attention.
That said, maintaining a healthy following and publishing schedule on Twitter is challenging, perhaps much more so than other social networks. You can’t help but want more followers, but if you’re going to extreme lengths just to build up that number with empty names and faces, it’s not worth the time and resources. Highlights: The Art of Learning: An Inner Journey to Optimal Performance By Josh Waitzkin
My growth became defined by barrierlessness.
LOCATION: 124
numbers to leave numbers, or form to leave form. LOCATION: 149
Whenever there was a concept or learning technique that I related to in a manner too abstract to convey, I forced myself to break it down into the incremental steps with which I got there. Over time I began to see the principles that have been silently guiding me, and a systematic methodology of learning emerged. LOCATION: 165
lifetime of competition has not cooled my ardor to win, but I have grown to love the study and training above all else. LOCATION: 172
Presence under fire hardly feels different from the presence I feel sitting at my computer, typing these sentences. LOCATION: 174
I remember the strange sensation of discovering a lost memory. LOCATION: 199
Every day pieces of the puzzle fell together. LOCATION: 223
Perhaps the most decisive element of my game was the way my style on the board was completely in synch with my personality as a child. I was unhindered by internal conflict—a state of being that I have come to see as fundamental to the learning process. LOCATION: 300
I’ll never forget the feeling when I sensed my potential escape. Often in chess, you feel something is there before you find it. LOCATION: 453
Dr. Carol Dweck, a leading researcher in the field of developmental psychology, makes the distinction between entity and incremental theories of intelligence. Children who are “entity theorists”—that is, kids who have been influenced by their parents and teachers to think in this manner—are prone to use language like “I am smart at this” and to attribute their success or failure to an ingrained and unalterable level of ability. They see their overall intelligence or skill level at a certain discipline to be a fixed entity, a thing that cannot evolve. Incremental theorists, who have picked up a different modality of learning—let’s call them learning theorists—are more prone to describe their results with sentences like “I got it because I worked very hard at it” or “I should have tried harder.” A child with a learning theory of intelligence tends to sense that with hard work, difficult material can be grasped—step by step, incrementally, the novice can become the master. Dweck’s research has shown that when challenged by difficult material, learning theorists are far more likely to rise to the level of the game, while entity theorists are more brittle and prone to quit. LOCATION: 474

Another way of envisioning the importance of the Soft Zone is through an ancient Indian parable that has been quite instructive in my life for many years: A man wants to walk across the land, but the earth is covered with thorns. He has two options—one is to pave his road, to tame all of nature into compliance. The other is to make sandals. Making sandals is the internal solution. Like the Soft Zone, it does not base success on a submissive world or overpowering force, but on intelligent preparation and cultivated resilience. LOCATION: 765

Then one day, an old Bulgarian Master named Rudy Blumenfeld approached my father in the Marshall Chess Club and asked him if we were aware of what this boy was doing to me. We were not. He explained that in the climactic moments of the struggle, when I had to buckle down and patiently work my way through the complications to find a precise solution, this boy would start to tap a chess piece on the side of the table, barely audible, but at a pace that entered and slightly quickened my mental process. This subtle tactic was highly effective and I later found out that it was an offspring of the Soviet study of hypnosis and mind control. The next time we played, I was on the lookout for the tapping and sure enough, in the critical moment it was right there. Hilarious. Once I was aware of what was happening, I was able to turn the tables in our rivalry. LOCATION: 800
Mental resilience is arguably the most critical trait of a world-class performer, and it should be nurtured continuously. Left to my own devices, I am always looking for ways to become more and more psychologically impregnable. When uncomfortable, my instinct is not to avoid the discomfort but to become at peace with it. When injured, which happens frequently in the life of a martial artist, I try to avoid painkillers and to change the sensation of pain into a feeling that is not necessarily negative. My instinct is always to seek out challenges as opposed to avoiding them. LOCATION: 826

I think a life of ambition is like existing on a balance beam. As a child, there is no fear, no sense for the danger of falling. The beam feels wide and stable, and natural playfulness allows for creative leaps and fast learning. You can run around doing somersaults and flips, always testing yourself with a love for discovery and new challenges. If you happen to fall off—no problem, you just get back on. But then, as you get older, you become more aware of the risk of injury. You might crack your head or twist your knee. The beam is narrow and you have to stay up there. Plunging off would be humiliating. While a child can make the beam a playground, high-stress performers often transform the beam into a tightrope. Any slip becomes a crisis. Suddenly you have everything to lose, the rope is swaying above a crater of fire, increasingly dramatic acrobatics are expected of you but the air feels thick with projectiles aimed to dislodge your balance. What was once light and inspiring can easily mutate into a nightmare. LOCATION: 1033
A key component of high-level learning is cultivating a resilient awareness that is the older, conscious embodiment of a child’s playful obliviousness. LOCATION: 1040

I have found that if we feed the unconscious, it will discover connections between what may appear to be disparate realities. The path to artistic insight in one direction often involves deep study of another—the intuition makes uncanny connections that lead to a crystallization of fragmented notions. The great Abstract Expressionist painters and sculptors, for example, came to their revolutionary ideas through precise realist training. Jackson Pollock could draw like a camera, but instead he chose to splatter paint in a wild manner that pulsed with emotion. He studied form to leave form. And in his work, the absence of classical structure somehow contains the essence of formal training—but without its ritualized limitations. LOCATION: 1106

With the practice of this type of simplified motion you can feel the subtlest ripples inside the body. You become aware of all the tension that resides in your feet, legs, back, and shoulders. Then you release the tension, step by step, hour by hour, month by month, and with the fading of tension comes a whole new world of sensation. You learn to direct your awareness inside the body, and soon enough your fingers come alive with tingling, you feel heat surging up your back and through your arms. LOCATION: 1441

A parallel would be a trained singer who, through years of practice, knows what the notes feel like vibrating inside. Then she is giving a concert in a big venue and the sound system is a nightmare. From onstage, she can’t hear herself at all—a surprisingly common occurrence. The great performer can deliver a virtuoso performance without hearing a thing, because she knows how the notes should feel coming out, even if her primary monitor—her ears—are temporarily unavailable. bizarre though it may sound I resolved not to atrophy. At this point in my life I was very involved in the subtle internal dynamics of the body through Tai Chi meditation. I had an idea that I might be able to keep my right side strong by intense visualization practice. My method was as follows: I did a daily resistance workout routine on my left side, and after every set I visualized the workout passing to the muscles on the right. My arm was in a cast, so there was no actual motion possible—but I could feel the energy flowing into the unused muscles. I admit it was a shot in the dark, but it worked. My whole body felt strong, and when the doctor finally took off my cast he was stunned. LOCATION: 1612

This is a nuanced and largely misunderstood state of mind that when refined involves a subtle reintegration of the conscious mind into a free-flowing unconscious process. The idea is to shift the primary role from the conscious to the unconscious without blissing out and losing the precision the conscious can provide. LOCATION: 1735

Most people would be surprised to discover that if you compare the thought process of a Grandmaster to that of an expert (a much weaker, but quite competent chess player), you will often find that the Grandmaster consciously looks at less, not more. That said, the chunks of information that have been put together in his mind allow him to see much more with much less conscious thought. So he is looking at very little and seeing quite a lot. This is why profoundly refined martial artists can sometimes appear mystical to less skilled practitioners—they have trained themselves to perceive and operate within segments of time that are too small to be perceived by untrained minds. LOCATION: 1794
If the opponent does not move, then I do not move. At the opponent’s slightest move, I move first. The first stanza is rather straightforward. It is about listening, being sensitive to the adversary’s slightest tremble, and sticking to him. Adherence is at the center of Tai Chi’s martial applicability. Basically those four lines are about becoming a shadow. But the last idea stumped me. A shadow is an effect, not a cause. How do you move before someone you are following? LOCATION: 1825

At one point, after Kasparov had lost a big game and was feeling dark and fragile, my father asked Garry how he would handle his lack of confidence in the next game. Garry responded that he would try to play the chess moves that he would have played if he were feeling confident. He would pretend to feel confident, and hopefully trigger the state. Kasparov was an intimidator over the board. Everyone in the chess world was afraid of Garry and he fed on that reality. If Garry bristled at the chessboard, opponents would wither. So if Garry was feeling bad, but puffed up his chest, made aggressive moves, and appeared to be the manifestation of Confidence itself, then opponents would become unsettled. Step by step, Garry would feed off his own chess moves, off the created position, and off his opponents’ building fear, until soon enough the confidence would become real and Garry would be in flow. If you think back to the chapter Building Your Trigger and apply it to this description, you’ll see that Garry was not pretending. He was not being artificial. Garry was triggering his zone by playing Kasparov chess. LOCATION: 2569
