It's hard to tell because it's only been some posts but you sound somewhat frustrated with pre-season discussions happening elsewhere for The Dragon Prince? In any case, I thought you might appreciate the note that some people certifiably do like Rayla and Callum as characters perfectly well (I know I do at least and have since the start)?

I'm sure you're aware of it already but it felt somewhat like it'd help you not feel like you're typing into a void of dissent for enjoying them and the show concurrently? Even if I'd disliked the time skip in some capacities (I didn't particularly, I thought Rayla had good instincts wanting proof of death etc she just perhaps should have taken more backup for higher success chances if at all possible) Stella's introduction would have won me over entirely anyway.

There's no shame in being easily charmed by adorable animal characters, after all! She really is cute and also useful in limited capacities, like Bait.

If you wanted an actual ask with the above I suppose that I'm intrigued how similarly you thought Bait and Stella functioned as extended powers/company of their respective people and in the group?

Mostly on twitter (which is a reason to stay off twitter) but, in all honesty, it's mostly because it's annoying to see people use ship names or main tags for their complaining (I have "tdp critical" blacklisted or whatever for a reason y'know). Like as someone who truly deeply loves every character and every part of the show, when Claudia or Terry or Aaravos or anyone else gets promo I'm thrilled and intrigued and theorizing. And there's a minimal but loud portion(s) of the fandom who are either currently expressing (or have a track record) of annoyance when Callum and Rayla, as main characters and as the show's consistently most developed dynamic (which, I want to stress, has been the case even in s1 and s2) dare to be main characters and have marketing, there's an uproar of complaining. (Again, not the majority, but still baffles me that it exists at all.)

It'd be like if I complained about ATLA being primarily about Aang, its main character, for the majority of the show's run because I thought Toph needed more of a character arc (she's the least developed of the gaang bc she comes in s2 and has a general self-acceptance arc that doesn't need a ton of steps, for ex).

Sometimes favourite characters are there to have minimal screentime, execute their story purpose, and highlight other characters' arcs. The divide between characters where that's generally understood (Gren, Lain, Tiadrin, Opeli) vs characters where it's not (Aaravos in S4/S5, Runaan) again irks me because of the inconsistency, and therefore bias accordingly affecting judgement. Which maybe isn't fair - most people, myself included, are in fandom as a hobby, and for some people that means not evaluating their biases and not wanting to adjust their expectations; I just can't imagine doing anything else

I think Bait mostly serves as emotional support to Ezran and a lil guy to Talk to for Callum (2x05, 4x02) when a human character wouldn't quite make sense or is gone (Rayla is his usual confidant, for example). Stella is more interesting to me from a structure standpoint as 1) a character connected to the Star arcanum who thus far doesn't really need to be, so I'm curious there and 2) a juxtaposition to post-timeskip Rayla's "we can't save everyone" that her big heart and soft insides is still there, and still something worth listening to.

Re: Hypertagging characters/ships for triggers, yeah as someone whos insane ass has a very serious trigger for a specific fictional character -particularly if they are portrayed in a positive light- I just Do Not Read Fic in that fandom by and large and blacklist it pretty hard.

It sucks I had to divorce myself from the fandom because I LIKED the earlier seasons and sometimes the fic was cute and good, but I simply cannot reasonably ask anyone to tag every mention of that character so I blacklist it all.

Its a me issue, NOT a them issue, so its my job to manage it and actually put effort into that.

That means blacklisting the show on every platform that is possible that I use, not following people who are likely to post that character, not consuming the new canon content of the show in case I get jumpscared with the character, and only ever intentionally looking for content if im in the right frame of mind to be able to stand simply seeing the name somewhere while I control+f a fic to see if they show up. I even sometimes ask friends to prescreen fics sometimes if I REALLY want to read something.

I make my own content if I want to engage with that media and I avoid the fandom. Its... I wont say its easy because it really sucks actually, but the world cannot and should not cater to me in that way. Its a competing access need and unreasonable to ask.

Its reasonable to ask a friend to warn/not deliberately show me that character- not NOT reasonable to ask a rando to do that.

Id even try to desensitize the trigger if I was in a good place for doing it but I am the wrong kind of insane to be doing that any time soon lol. Trauma work lays you right out.

To people wondering how anyone could be so fragile as to need something like that tagged; PTSD and other mental illnesses that cause serious triggers often latch onto innocuous things. Do you think I want to have such a 'cringe' trigger that causes me to [redacted] at best and have a dissociative panic attack-flashback combo AND [redacted] at worse? No its dumb as hell and I hate that there is very little to do to suppress it. Does that make the trigger go away? Also no. Its not like this is just me not liking or being uncomfortable with the character, this is an involuntary serious-hazard-to-health negative reaction I shant detail that sucks ass.

Yes us crazies do deserve to participate in fandom spaces too, we arent too broken to be barred from playing with everyone else- we just have to understand where the reasonable line is on accommodations for tagging, understand that competing access needs are a thing, and do the rest of the work ourselves.

Its not perfect but its the most good for the most people.

Id invite anyone who has a character/ship/etc trigger to seriously just blacklist the media and do what I do or even be more strict about it. You will feel so much better and more stable im not kidding. It sucks to lose a beloved fandom but you will feel so much better.

For everyone else- dont feel you need to tag every last mention on something. If you really want to be trigger friendly for some reason, you can put in the chapter notes all the minor mentions of stuff or w/e. Please Do Not put it in the proper tags.

1. Anyone is welcome to contact me out of character regardless of whether or not we are mutuals, but please keep all in-character asks to mutuals only. I’m only using the IM feature for out of character communication - so, no in-character messages there please! I prefer to do my plotting through the IM, but please feel free to contact me via ask if that’s an easier method for you. Please reblog memes from their source when you’re able to. This blog isn’t a meme resource, and I do my best to follow the ‘reblog karma’ rule where memes are concerned.

2. I am most comfortable writing threads of multi- and single-paragraph length, but am open to one-liners ( moreso for ice-breakers ) , as well as novella threads. Regarding novella threads, I do ask that some plotting is done beforehand. I do format my IC replies with small text ( and icons sometimes ) ; I do not match my writing partners’ formatting, and I don’t expect any to match mine. If you prefer small text not be used ( and it isn’t stated on your blog somewhere already ) , feel free to let me know, as I have no problems with not using it. Similarly, people are always welcome to inquire about Foladóir if something isn’t already answered in his ‘about’, 'inventory’, or 'background’ sections. For those unaware, ‘unaffiliated’ means this blog is not part of any roleplay groups, and I would prefer to remain that way, so I would ask not to be invited to any or have any recommended.

5. As stated previously, mature content is going to be present on this blog. The original canon contains topics that can be considered dark and / or mature, and I will not be shying away from them. Regarding NSFW content, I would prefer to write a ‘fade to black’ / skim over it, since tumblr is still unreliable as far as flagging such content is concerned. Welcome to my multi fandom/muse account. (Sideblog to donahontes ) I am still working out all the kinks, but I think I'm on the right track. 02. No Minors 18+ Only -- I'm 31 years old. I just don't really feel comfortable roleplaying with anyone under 18 years old, preferably over 21.

03. USFW Content -- Seeing as the fandoms on this blog deal heavily with content definitely not rated for anyone under 17, it should go without saying that usfw content will be present. I will do my best to tag all potential triggers and ships so that you can blacklist them as necessary.

04. Shipping -- I am the very definition of a shipping whore. If you ship it, then I probably do as well. Now, this may not always be the case but I'm open to plotting it out or letting it happen naturally. Whatever you feel most comfortable with.

05. No Hate -- of any kind. No homophobia, racism, transphobia, etc... none. No hate to characters or other role players - this is a drama free zone. Unless someone has done a lot of shitty things that either borderline being illegal or are illegal , please don't bring drama to me.

I whole heartedly support TAG CULTURE and ao3. 'Don't like; Don't read.' I don't read a lot of dark(er) fic, because I don't like it, but it's not my place to tell others what to write. It is my place to block and filter out that content.

Please learn about censorship history before you try to push that as a good thing. Especially on Tumblr. The "they banned tits and everyone freaked out" webbed site. The site regularly mocking unalived and k!lled. Please spell out your intentions, so I can use the blacklist function properly.

Censorship is, and always has been, a slippery slope. The moment you argue something not being "family friendly" or say "think of the children," step back and remember that the same things have been and are still said about queer existence. It's the same thing that led to the fandom purges not too many years ago.

Please think before you regurgitate very obvious conservative and TERF takes (especially of you claim to be against them). If you are or agree with any TERFs, transmeds (people who say that trans existence is purely medical/trans people need medical intervention to be trans), or ""gender critical"" literally just go away. Things I’ve learned the last 5 years and keep forgetting to write down - 

Only the TAGS on the original post count towards monthly yearly talleys (so no matter how many times I reblog clint barton he’s not going to make the year end top 100)

Only the first 5 TAGS are searchable (so if you want someone else to be able to find your post use the most important 5 first)

Only the first 20 TAGS are searchable inside your blog (so when you’re tagging 50 avengers from the comics make sure the first 20 are the ones you’re going to be looking for the most)

Even if you follow all these rules the TAGS are so broken most of the time, it won’t always work

Alright, so apparently certain love square shippers felt the need to go into the Lukanette tag to celebrate/mock that Lukanette is “over” (Marinette broke up with him to keep him safe but go off I guess) and that officially crosses all my lines of not dealing with the fandom’s garbage.

The sheer pettiness is astounding to me, to take joy in the end of what was a lot of people’s comfort ship (people don’t choose comfort ships, by the way) because of “toxic Luka/Lukanette stans,” essentially lumping chunks of the fandom together and letting the opinion of those fans shape their own opinion on a character/ship. The sheer sensitivity on display to have so much spite and disdain for a ship that appeared in less than 10% of all episodes in the show. The sheer vindictiveness to feel smug and self-righteous while also being panicked over a non-endgame ship that’s as temporary as their claim of positivity and condemning of salt until they’re presented with something they don’t like.

Goliath really be beating up on David over here because he's bigger and thinks his opinion is more valid. For the record, no, opinions are not more valid due to shipping an endgame ship or presenting oneself as a beacon of positivity.

And it just goes to show how ship-blind these people are, to care about nothing more than the fact that Lukanette has broken up. I’m not exaggerating when I say that I’ve seen people who openly admit to caring more about the love square’s security than Marinette’s happiness, which is just part of the issue here.

These people did not care how Lukanette broke up, only that it happened. Marinette’s crush backpedaling (because of the show feeling the need to cater to these exact people, who are so worried about their obviously endgame ship being “in danger”) and Marinette ending the episode in literal tears because she wanted to date Luka but couldn’t are both things that didn’t matter to them because it’s all about their ship in the end. Marinette’s life has been made more and more miserable due to her crush on Adrien while straining her relationships with various characters (see: Alya’s claim of jealousy as a reason for why Marinette “must be lying” about Lila), but so long as these people feel secure in their endgame ship, that’s all that matters.

They didn’t care if it was a clean break where both sides came out satisfied (or at least content). If anything, they wanted Lukanette to end as shoddily/dirtily as possible with zero care into how it affected Marinette, whether because they just don’t like the ship or because they actively desire for the suffering of the people who found comfort/happiness in the ship. Adrien had literally nothing to do with the break-up itself and him being mentioned served nothing for the story, but it’ll be completely overlooked or outright praised because god forbid Marinette spend an episode not talking about Adrien since that would imply that her life doesn’t revolve around him and that would be an apparent detriment to the love square.

By the way, newsflash: Luka was not an obstacle to the love square. He sent Marinette away in “Frozer” to go talk to Adrien. He told her that there was no pressure and that he’d be happy for her no matter what. Had Luka not existed, the love square would still be as stagnant as it is now, and it’s pathetic to complain about Marinette liking/dating another boy when she’s not only allowed to do so, but when “Oblivio” and “Chat Blanc” both exist as little more than tools to hold the supposedly “starved” love square shippers over.

These are the same people who will say they dislike/hate Luka, then do a 180 and claim that they “just feel so bad for him” and how he “deserves better than Marinette” (the sudden sympathy of which conveniently serves to hate on a ship that interferes with their own, further proven by equally convenient and appreciation/liking of Luka when he’s not a “threat” to the love square) while simultaneously shipping her with their sunshine boy because Ladybug is who Adrien wants and what Adrien wants is what matters.

These are the same people who will say that Luka is unnecessary and unneeded, then use him as a prop and stepping stone for love square fanfics and fanart, or suggest that Kagami is fine because she makes Adrien feel good about himself (when Luka does the same for Marinette but sure).

These are the same people who say that “Marinette can’t date Luka because she’s busy with hero stuff” while making fics about the love square getting together mid-”hero stuff” and then giving complete radio silence during “Chat Blanc” outside of how good they thought the episode was.

These are the same people who will tell others not to denounce Adrien for “a few mistakes” and then preemptively denounce Luka’s behavior based on a written synopsis for an episode that hadn’t even come out yet (and also after complaining that Luka was “too perfect,” I might add).

These are the same people who will say that Luka/Lukanette makes them feel “uncomfortable” (usually without offering any tangible reasons or being vague about Luka giving off “bad vibes” when he’s done nothing less than support and respect Marinette's agency) while the show’s endgame ship features the “m’lady” hand kissing Chat Noir who Ladybug has pulled away from multiple times yet he keeps persisting (which is apparently considered okay because Adrien is Chat Noir as if that discredits her discomfort/disdain for the gestures).

These are the same people who will say that Luka is “barely there” or “hardly exists” and then complain about how much screentime is dedicated to Lukanette, the utter greed on display going right over their heads when they have the actual endgame ship.

These are the same people who will absolutely reach for anything about Luka to complain about (again, after saying that he’s “too perfect,” then claiming he “tricked” Marinette into kissing him, claiming that he tried to force her into telling him her secret, or criticizing him for teasing her for her stuttering despite him immediately apologizing) and then either defend or turn a blind eye to Chat Noir (who tried to kiss her mid-battle instead of helping, made Ladybug feel bad for keeping secrets that weren’t hers to tell plus threatening his kwami that he’d quit if he didn’t get let in on said secrets, and mocked her instead of apologizing when she told him to stop calling her by a nickname she doesn’t like and has told him before to stop calling her) at every opportunity.

These are the same people who will say that Lukanette is “forced,” then proceed to ship Luka (regardless of if they like him or not) with literally anyone else for the sake of taking him out of the romance equation (because he has to be taken out via already dating as they couldn’t come up with a legitimate reason for Marinette to not want him otherwise), and the only requirement for this person he’s shipped with is that they breathe and aren’t Marinette.

These are the same people who act bothered by Marinette “””treating Luka poorly””” because of her crush on Adrien (by the by, Adrien’s crush on Ladybug has hurt Kagami as well), inadvertently admitting that Marinette’s crush is a problem, then continue shipping her with Adrien in its canon form anyway.

These are the same people who will say that they hate salt fics (specifically ones that target Adrien) and how they “bash characters,” then write fanfics or draw fanart that intentionally make Luka out of character for the sake of having him look bad or giving Marinette an excuse to run to Adrien (because Luka apparently needs to be made worse so that Adrien can look good instead of Adrien being able to stand on his own merits as a good love interest for Marinette).

These are the same people who will slam Luka when he’s Marinette’s support, then go off and ship him with other characters so that he can support them instead (fun fact that this is usually either Adrien - thus leaving Marinette completely alone and miserable when Luka canonically likes her - or characters that Marinette is actively against, such as Chloe or Lila).

These are the same people who will complain about how salty the fandom is (even when the salt is for catharsis/getting out anger from an episode in a productive way) and then laugh when a simple side ship ends because they’ve been letting said ship live rent free in their heads and couldn’t stop anticipating the episode that declares them “over.”

These are the same people who tell or suggest that people should “just leave” if they don’t like the main ship, unapologetically implying that the main ship is either all the show is about, all that they personally care about (bringing us right back to that little “not caring how torn apart Marinette is about the break-up” thing), or that people aren’t allowed to watch/like the show for other reasons (like Marinette herself, the miraculouses, other characters who may appear intermittently but nevertheless bring them joy to see, etcetera).

These are the same people who get on other people’s case for being spiteful while they themselves ride their high horse into the sunset, playing victim when people call them out for intentionally provoking others or purposefully mistagging to avoid people’s blacklist (tagging is not for the comfort of the tagger so they can “””avoid the toxic stans,””” for the record; it’s for the comfort of the people who don’t want to see that content).

And these are the same people who will go on and on about the toxicity of the stans who ship something they don’t like and then either ignore or downplay the stans who ship what they do like because they personally don’t have to experience it. This isn’t even about ship wars, it’s about the hypocrisy and lack of self-awareness.

I don’t want to hear it. I don’t want to hear about how cruel the Luka fans or Lukanette shippers are when these people are celebrating Marinette’s misery because it means the end of a ship that they don’t like and certain people find comfort in. I don’t want to hear about people cross-tagging/mistagging when the Luka/Lukanette tag has been flooded with people who talk trash about the ship without any additional tags to filter it away, getting so bad to the point where some Luka/Lukanette fans had to find workarounds and/or avoid the tag entirely. I don’t want to hear about how certain shippers are worse because [x] [y] [z] when everyone has different experiences, showing a severe case of close-mindedness or at least ignorance on these people’s parts.

And, with how this season is heading, if something bad happens to the love square by the end of Season 4, I most definitely do not want to hear these same people decry the people who will do the exact thing that they’re doing now.

there’s a real serious issue in this fandom with not understanding what queer terminology actually means or implies, especially when applied to a fictional narrative.

i’m specifically talking about ‘coding’, here. (if i were in a more meme-y mood, i might have said ‘the atla fandom found out about the term “gay-coding” and haven’t shut up since’.)

to the people who say ‘zuko is gay-coded’, i have this to say: you keep using that word. i do not think it means what you think it means. because he isn’t. i’m sorry, but he’s not! and the fact that this is such a prevalent claim in this fandom is distressing, bc it says to me that none of y’all know what gay-coding is or when and how to apply it! please, i’m begging you, go and look up these terms and what they mean and when they should be used before actually trying to plug them into your critical analysis, because when you misuse them and then call other people delusional for disagreeing with you it casts a pall over the entire fandom and is, i think, the root of some of the worst toxicity this fandom has to offer.

and the thing is, there are cases where gay-coding would apply--for instance, a couple series that are famous for queerbaiting their audience by coding their main characters as being attracted to one another (sometimes even despite their openly stated sexualities) come to mind, but those shows bare no similarities at all to atla and how zuko was written and portrayed! (and it would be funny, if it weren’t so obnoxious and infuriatingly wide-spread throughout the fandom, because the only queer couple we actually seen on-screen in either show wasn’t even queer-coded in any respect, and they’re canonically bi! [yes, i’m shading korrasami, or more accurately i’m shading bryke for refusing to give ka the build-up and development they deserved].)

this absolutely isn’t to say that headcanoning zuko as gay is a bad thing or invalid in any respect. (although the tendency for zukka shippers to do this specifically to keep zuko away from katara and/or invalidate his canon relationship/attraction to girls is more than a little eyebrow raising. especially since sokka is usually allowed to be bi, bc fans have no problem letting sukka stay in the background bc it’s no real threat, while jetko shippers are happy to have both boys be bi. [possibly bc katara is less a threat to jetko bc jetkotara is every bit as valid as any single ship between the three, but zukka can’t exactly let katara join in, and if the potential exists for zuko to be attracted to her then canon giving them the far deeper emotional bond becomes a threat to zukka’s existence? idk for sure--you be the judge.]) i prefer to hc zuko as bi (and always have, long before the atla renaissance), bc i don’t think zuko being attracted to boys is outside the realm of possibility, and it isn’t a threat to my ship since zuko&katara had a deep and emotional bond in canon that is very easy to develop further into something that becomes explicitly romantic--but the headcanon itself isn’t really the problem (although what it’s often in service to can be).

it’s the strange insistence that this is the only way to read his character, bc he was coded that way and so anyone who doesn’t see it must be too straight to understand--and i really shouldn’t have to say why and how that is so incredibly fucking insulting. (the ‘hetero lenses’ comment wasn’t cute when it came from bryke six years ago, and the same sentiment being repackaged and delivered by zukka shippers ain’t cute now.)

calling zuko gay-coded not only demonstrates ignorance as to what the term actually means, and how to usefully apply it in critical analysis, but also validates the frankly bullshit insertion of institutionalized homophobia in the world of atla where it was neither needed, nor wanted, nor ever hinted at in canon. as a queer woman i’m still infuriated by one fucking comic panel shoving institutionalized and systemic homophobia into a world where it was entirely unnecessary (and doing this in the first installment of the franchise showcasing a queer relationship??? making korra and asami worried about ‘coming out’ when they could have just gone on to have cute adventures together and tell people ‘hey we’re dating’ and have everyone else be ‘that’s awesome =DDD’ [because it is, in fact, possible to just have a world without homophobia i promise!!!!!] double yikes, i’m still pissed at bryke about it), and i doubly hate that ‘zuko is gay coded’ has become so widespread that ‘ozai hates him bc he’s gay’ has become a staple in that part of the fandom.

not only does making zuko gay and implying (or outright stating) that ozai hated and abused him because of it completely undermine zuko’s character arc by making his abuse about his sexuality rather than ozai’s toxic pride and anger at seeing himself reflected in his ‘weak’ son, but it comes very close to outright stating that abuse and trauma are inherently gay experiences, and they aren’t!!! they really aren’t, i promise!!!

abuse and trauma narratives exist outside of ‘my dad hates me because i’m gay’. and, quite frankly, there are MORE THAN ENOUGH queer trauma narratives out in the world. we do not need to start trying to retroactively make them canon in a series where they didn’t exist! if you’re gay and see yourself in zuko and project your own experiences on him, that’s understandable and valid. that does not make zuko gay-coded. and honestly, the insistence that he is makes very little sense to me, because you’re essentially trying to give the show credit for work you put into interpreting the characters! why would you want to do that? why not own your own headcanons and take credit for them, rather than insisting they are canon and everyone else is wrong for not seeing them??? like, i’ve said before that i’ve always headcanoned zuko (and katara) as bi, and even support it with my interpretations of evidence from the show, but the difference between ‘i think zuko is bi’ and ‘zuko is definitely gay-coded’ is that i know that bi zuko is my interpretation of canon, and that it is work i’m putting into the show that wasn’t actually intended by the creators/writers, no matter how much sexual tension i read into the jetko swordfight.

and like, zuko’s character arc doesn’t actually parallel a queer one all that well to begin with. it’s easy enough to do the work and twist it sideways just enough to make the general points fit, but the fact is, zuko’s arc is not one of self-discovery. it’s not one of coming to understand something fundamental about himself that he can’t change, that he was hated for, and coming out to his father in a dramatic confrontation where he shows that he understands himself and doesn’t need his father’s acceptance to be fulfilled.

zuko’s arc is actually one of trauma and healing. and those can (and often are--like i said, there are more than enough queer trauma narratives in the world, atla really doesn’t need to be one of them) be part of queer narratives, for sure! but they aren’t uniquely queer. and zuko’s confrontation with ozai during the eclipse doesn’t read like a ‘coming out’ at all. (yes, i’ve seen that post. yes, i rolled my eyes and moved on, bc unlike some people, i’m capable of not clowning on correctly tagged posts i disagree with.) zuko is specifically confronting ozai over his abuse, because his arc wasn’t about discovering anything fundamental about himself (and therefore realizing that ozai was hating him for something he couldn’t change)--it was about realizing that he was not at fault for the way his father treated him. it was also about realizing that the fire nation was broken and corrupt at its core, and that his father was an aspect of that he needed to break away from so that he could help the world begin to heal.

he says it himself:

Zuko: No, I've learned everything! And I've had to learn it on my own! Growing up, we were taught that the Fire Nation was the greatest civilization in history. And somehow, the War was our way of sharing our greatness with the rest of the world. What an amazing lie that was. The people of the world are terrified by the Fire Nation. They don't see our greatness. They hate us! And we deserve it! We've created an era of fear in the world. And if we don't want the world to destroy itself, we need to replace it with an era of peace and kindness.

making this about zuko being gay and rejecting ozai’s homophobia, rather than zuko learning fundamental truths about the world and about his home and about how there was something deeply wrong with his nation that needed to be fixed in order for the world to heal (and, no, ‘homophobia’ is not the answer to ‘what is wrong with the fire nation’, i’m still fucking pissed at bryke about that), misses the entire point of his character arc. this is the culmination of zuko realizing that he should never have had to earn his father’s love, because that should have been unconditional from the start. this is zuko realizing that he was not at fault for his father’s abuse--that speaking out of turn in a war meeting in no way justified fighting a duel with a child.

is that first realization (that a parent’s love should be unconditional, and if it isn’t, then that is the parent’s fault and not the child’s) something that queer kids in homophobic households/families can relate to? of course it is. but it’s also something that every other abused kid, straight kids and even queer kids who were abused for other reasons before they even knew they were anything other than cishet, can relate to as well. in that respect, it is not a uniquely queer experience, nor is it a uniquely queer story, and zuko not being attracted to girls (which is what a lot of it seems to boil down to, at the end of the day--cutting down zuko’s potential ships so that only zukka and a few far more niche ships are left standing) is not necessary to his character arc. nor does it particularly make sense.

(and before anyone brings up his date with jin--a) he enjoyed it when she kissed him, and b) he was a traumatized, abused child going out on a first date. of course he was fucking awkward. have you ever met a teenage boy????)

anyway, uh, that was a lot of words, so have a tl;dr: zuko is not gay-coded. there is nothing uniquely gay (or even uniquely queer) about his character arc or characterization, and he was certainly not coded gay in an attempt to sneak a queer character past the censors. if anyone involved with atla was gonna try that, it would’ve been in lok, and as established, they didn’t even manage to queer-code the actual queer relationship before the last few minutes of the final episode. headcanoning zuko as gay is absolutely fine (though if it’s only done to keep him away from female characters he may otherwise be attracted to, that smells more like misogyny than anything else), but insisting that this reading is the only one that makes sense, and anyone who doesn’t agree must be straight (hello, queer woman here making this insanely long thinkpiece) is very much not.

ship what you like, but stop trying to invalidate other ships and other interpretations of characters just to make your ship seem more plausible. it’s really not a good look.

I get the feeling some of us are feeling fandom fatigue at the moment, which is very normal given the limited new content we have access to. I also feel as though this frustration is echoing into other parts of our lives, and that we’re losing sight of supportive fandom fundamentals, both for ourselves and others.

If you’re feeling tired, you don’t have to write or draw. You don’t owe anyone new content. If someone is kind enough to send you a prompt fill, that is lovely, but you do not have to fill it. You owe it to yourself to rest. Even if it’s for one day. If you keep pushing yourself because of self-imposed expectations, you’re going to burn out and not be able to create at all. Take breaks.

Wherever possible on Tumblr, please use ‘read more’/breaks when posting ficlets. Even if they are small. I know that people do tag and that it is possible to blacklist tags, but I think we all also know that this platform is a bit shit. Try to include an author’s note at the top with shipping and any major tags, and try to use a break after a paragraph or two. Not only does this make things neater for all of us, it means that triggering content that has weaseled around the system is condensed/easier to skip. I think this is super important. It doesn’t take much effort, and it’s very helpful for other people. On AO3 it’s easier to see triggering content; here, it’s harder.

Remember that fandom and fanfic does not equal real life. I know that sounds asinine/obvious, but a lot of us (myself included!) use this medium to project our actual real life issues. It can be therapeutic, but it can also be damaging. If you are finding the writing more difficult, or if you are finding the reading is becoming harder/making you hurt, take a break. Blacklist tags. Hell, unfollow people for awhile/permanently, if you need to. This is not mean/rude, this is self care.

Ideally, art exists in a vacuum for objective view. Realistically, that’s not the case. But do try to remember that a piece of art (be it fanfiction or fan art) does not necessarily represent a person’s real life ideals or points of view. The reason these creative avenues exist are for us to explore. I, for one, do not like being made to feel guilty for exploring -- especially when I try to take care to tag, etc.

On that last note -- tags. Tag ships (and know the difference between / and &) and tag important things in your fic/drawing. And  if you read something and are triggered/bothered by it -- and it has no tag -- it’s your right as a consumer of the art to message the artist and tell them that they missed a trigger warning. You can do this anon, there’s no shame in that. I would much rather be told that I need to tag something than to hurt someone and not know.

If any of our members can think of options to help this meme situation - we’re all ears and open to listen to your suggestions! Please know, we know for a fact this isn’t just an issue in Fame but always has been an issue in the RPC for as long as we can remember. We’re just running out of ideas here on how to make people play fairly. So until we come up with a new solution (again, please message us if you have one!) then memes will be paused until further notice.

PRIVATE EVENTS: If you’d like to reserve a date when there’s a private event happening, just send the main an IM and tell us which date you’d like to reserve for your event and we’ll gladly reserve it for you! We ask that you be courteous and message whoever has the date first to see if it’s okay with them based on invites in case anything overlaps. This is something we will ask that you did before we give you the date. The only time this doesn’t apply is during the birth of a child or if the private event is only taking up one day. Private events have always been allowed in the roleplay and in real life these type of events (ex: birthday parties, bach parties, weddings) can in fact be private and not open to 200+ people. We allow people to post aesthetics all the time for other events and just because an event is private doesn’t mean the same can’t be done. Whether it be a wedding, regular party, child’s party or a bachelor/bachelorette party - it is up to the muns prerogative on how they wish to conduct their events. In the past we’ve had members throw the following private events: house warming parties, birthday trips, bachelor parties, bachelorette parties, pool parties and private weddings just to name a few. Please also note that our members try their best to space out their event posts over the course of the day so the dash won’t be clogged with those posts, but if you’d like to make sure to keep it off your dash, then please blacklist the hashtag that’s most of the time being used for these type of private events. 

CONDOLENCES POSTS: Condolences posts if a celebrity has passed away ARE allowed. So long as a player is not using the death as a plot device or character development - then saying that you miss someone and making a post that acknowledges their life, legacy or a publicly known friendship is allowed. We do ask that you use the proper trigger tags (ex: tw: celeb name who passed away) to ensure everyone’s comfort.

REPLYING: Please make sure you are keeping up to date with your replies. Leaving things in your drafts and being active on your FC for other threads isn’t a nice feeling for those waiting. If you drafted up replies and never got to them - message the muns and ask if it would be okay to start up something new. Please remember that no one can be responsible for your FC except for you. Famers, if anyone has not replied to you but you see them active on the dash for others please message us so we can reach out on the admin teams end. We will look into to see if the mun is on a hiatus/coming off a hiatus to remain fair as well as get the other side of the story. We will never jump to an assumption that someone is ignoring another on purpose without hearing from all sides.

CHARACTER HOGGING: The admin team is going to be cracking down on this a bit more now. If you are on activity checks often/consistently for either a warning or unfollow, we will start to ask people to drop roles to ensure that you can build your activity up before taking on another role again. We’ve noticed people have gotten really lax with this and it’s starting to become an issue with people holding roles for weeks with no posts (just a few plot calls) but constantly reclaiming. Please note that you can always ask for a hiatus if you need it!

CONTENT CREATORS: We’ve recently ran into a situation with a content creator (in this case a gif creator) placing rules on their gifs to not be used in roleplays. We ask that our members please be respectful of these content creators requests. At the end of the day, they made the graphics and are entitled to how they want their work to be used. Please also give credit when credit should be given (ex: manip posts). Should you need help in finding other gif hunts or graphics that does not have these kind of rules in place send the admin team a message and we will absolutely do our best to try and help you find some!

Of course I'm not taking into account the probably large amount of non-shipper fans — one of my friends is one such person and I made my case about the evidence for Jonsa and she thought it was likely, especially with how it would resolve the narrative reason for Jon's parentage reveal, if he's not actually destined to be kot7k. But she's waiting for the books (if they ever come out!) to fully come over to us Jonsas. But let's say Winds does come out, sooner rather than later, and Jonsa is brought forward from the subconsious foreshadowing into a conconsious reality, do you think we might see a new wave of Jonsas (akin to those who came on board during s6+)? I feel like there are some neutral readers open to it, though akin to ghosts (lol), they have to see it to believe it. Some people, of course, will HATE it though.

Well, this might be just my impression, but I actually think that the Jonsa fandom is not that small but maybe smaller than you would think if you look at the number of fics? If that makes sense. And it would be difficult to measure the number of shippers.

I’m involved/half-involved in some fandoms and fandoms tend to have differing flavours. I don’t know how to explain it better. Anyway of course every fandom has artist, writers, meta writers, gif makes, and supporters who might not produce much or only occasionally. And some ships are generally more hated within a fandom than others.

For example, I low-key ship Deckerstar, have read some fics, follow some blogs. I’m in no way really active and I only wrote one fic. Imho opinion the Lucifer fandom is pretty chill and Deckerstar is a highly popular ship that has some really amazing writers and art. People are pretty accepting of all ships. I might not be deep enough into it, but I haven’t blacklisted any tags from the Lucifer fandom.

The HP fandom is huge and quite divided and Dramione is a popular ship but also quite hated by others. But the books are written and there is nothing to fight about really. So apart from the occasional anti Dramione rant that happens occasionally and is not tagged properly, there is rarely any drama (well apart from the regular fandom drama). Most people understand that fanon and canon are not the same.  Most people understand why people like enemies to lovers even if they dislike Dramione. Even the anti-Dramione anons I occasionally get seem to originate in the Got fandom and seem to be by people who think they can call me out for shipping a disgusting ship. Sigh.

Dramione is a ship that is - at least in my experience - really very strong on the art side. There are many many absolutely and incredible artists. Of course there are good fics as well, but the art really catches the eye? Anyway I have blacklisted some HP ships, not because I clashed with anyone, just because I dislike the ships.

And then there is the GoT fandom...

Well, the show is over but the books are unfinished and an end of the discussion is nowhere in sight. And for some reason (and I have talked about this repeatedly on my blog) the Jonsa ship is the most hated of all. Random rare pair shippers claim they have seen something on a Jonsa blog, tag it Anti Jonsa and everyone and their mother will chime in, give them notes and reblogs and shout out loudly how the Jonsa fandom (and occasionally Sansa fans by association) are the worst part of the fandom. We ruin everybody’s experience etc. etc. The GoT/ASOIAF fandom has effectively driven the Jonsa fandom out of the Jon Snow and Daenerys tag. I know that some people still are brave enough to tag Arya, Jon and Daenerys but I for my part have given up on it, because I just don’t have time for the drama. And I still have stalkers.

So, there are reasons why people would rather be a closeted Jonsa shipper. The fandom is big enough that you don’t have to feel alone but people have dropped into my inbox, telling me that they agree but that they would never admit that publicly (Imagine that!). So, I can easily imagine that once TWOW drops and Sansa is indeed the Girl in Grey and we get Jonsa content that there will be an influx of shippers. As you said, some people might hate it, but that is only to be expected.

All in all, Jonsa is a fandom that is dominated by fic writers (again just my experience). Of course there are wonderful artists and gif makers, but the majority seems to be writers. I also have the impression that Jonsas are mostly active on tumblr and post to AO3. So, I actually do think that Jonsas are over-represented in fic, because AO3 is a space where you usually can post in peace and because the proportion of fic writers is probably higher than in other fandoms.

Please mind that this is just my impression.

Anyone who’s played with me before knows that I’m the slowest guy. It can take me weeks sometimes to reply to things depending on work and my health. However, if it’s been longer than that, feel free to nudge me a little just in case I missed something.

I tend to write multi-paragraph style, with small text but otherwise minimal formatting. I use icons sometimes, but not always. If you would prefer I use normal text size / no images / etc, let me know - I can accommodate these things. If there’s art of Eden in icons, I made it. Any commissions or work by other artists will be credited as such.

I’m not even sure if it’s necessary to add any more, but of course: it’s not cool to godmod, control other people’s characters, kill each other without discussing combat first, badger people for speedy replies, etc. Please be a nice human. I will always, always, always tag triggers for you, especially if you list them in your rules page. Eden’s character has a lot of violence and body horror themes, so if those aren’t for you tread carefully.

Triggers for me: Please tag all images of broken teeth with tw:teeth or something similar. I have just about every iteration blacklisted. Additionally, please tag all content involving a/b/o threads/art/etc and, for lack of a less loaded word, ‘x humanoid character has/gets/is ‘cursed’ with x animal traits/whatever now’ threads/etc as well. I have just about every iteration of both of these blacklisted (I think). Any general a/b/o tag will work just fine; for the latter, I suggest ‘animal traits tw’ or ‘zoomorphism tw’. If you post this that’s fine, but I might not be able to follow you.

Deeply personal reasons for me as an individual and as a professional / animal advocate - For clarity: hybrid or shapeshifter characters that actively deal with their hybridity and its consequences are not the same thing. I have a problem when humans put on animal characteristics like costumes for aesthetic purposes / kink / amusement / etc.

I have a complicated relationship with writing games. I love them in concept and love getting to send my friends things and answer questions / draw prompts / etc, but the havoc they bring to my notes can make it impossible for me to run a blog. I feel like I gotta talk about shipping Spinel. Specifically in regards to each party member's mental maturity.

I find simultaneously some people saying "why would anyone be attracted to Spinel, isn't she like mentally a child?" and some saying "why would anyone ship Spinel with *insert minor here* they're literally a minor"

The way Spinel is written and shown in the series gives different people entirely different ideas of Spinel's mental capacity/maturity, and different people of the same general opinion will still give you different reasons as their primary for why they hc Spinel to be the they do.

and I gotta ask: Is it wrong to think that both interpretations are valid? bc I totally see how a person could interpret her mental maturity either as more like just an adult with some issues and/or is ND, or interpret her as more like an actual child. I don't even think it's ableist or anything to read her as "mentally a child" or similar just because I personally read her are more similar to autistic adult like myself. And fictional characters aren't like real life people. They are who we make of them, and who you intend/interpret them to be is who they are in the reality that is your mind.

In my mind, in order to deem all Spinelx[minor] ships as pedophilic, I would need to deem any and every interpretation of Spinel someone has in which she has a mind more like that of a minor than an adult as wrong and not valid. I don't really comprehend physical age the same way NT people do, but I can tell when characters are written the same age by their thought processes and the decisions they make. Maybe there is a way for people to genuinely not have this same kind of requirement somehow so if so, do tell me i am very curious and it can even potentially help me in confronting certain situations down the road.

But what I do when I encounter any ship with Spinel in it, is to see how she and her partner(s) are written. I judge on a case by case basis if a ship involving Spinel is one where everyone in it is "on a level playing field" as I like to say. Same deal with aging up characters. Are they written like they're the same age? Because I am well aware that the label can say "goose" but the contents look a lot like gator, to put it metaphorically. I have to take a look for myself to judge the content of each work/series(this may include checking the author's page for sexually charged content featuring minors)

So I don't have the whole "stevinel" tag blocked, but I have blocked/blacklisted several fics and authors who i found ship Spinel in a "mentally uneven" way that I'm uncomfortable with.

I am, indeed, looking for feedback on this. I want to know what everyone's mindset is, and why they feel the way they do(if you're comfortable with sharing of course). It's something that is part of exploring my own self and gaining new skills. Maybe it's that it's hard for some to get past her appearance, maybe the way she acts just reads to them are more like a minor with mental issues than an adult with mental issues. Heck, maybe some people do deem her as immature for the same reasons people deem autistic/ND adults immature. I depend very heavily on observing others to even begin to think of the possibility of things most people don't even think about, like how I had a discussion recently about applying different lets of logic to fiction and reality. And only after people saying that was something they could do did I begin to feel like that was something I could do. Just please keep it respectful, or at least not telling other people they're terrible people who deserve terrible things like death or famine or whatever in the notes.
