Well so much for updates while Art Fight was going, I guess this now a recap of the season.

So I though of making a post after my initial attack, but then I thought “no I should do work on my next one.” Three attacks later and here I’m am. I thought I could get a quick update in three weeks in just so I posted anything about Art Fight. I would do this by making a draft tumblr post and hoping I would feel the urge to complete it. Turns out I did not.

Let's get on with this recap of my first Art Fight season. I was on team Werewolves, had only 2 characters, and only 5 bookmarked characters. Unfortunately, I would not get any attacks over the month, but I can understand that. It's just 2 characters, and there's no way to search characters by creation date (other than the 8 newest characters on the front page). There's basically only a few friends that know my Art Fight stuff anyways.

Hopefully next year will be much easier to get an attack. I'll probably upload more of my characters to it in addition to the Florida Collection. Now let's get onto my attacks.

#1: Downy

Of course I would start off with a Rito. I wanted to find avians to draw, and I found this guy by @venonatt. You can see that it has a similar style to my 2 Art Fight OCs, though I varied outline thickness all around as how The Windwaker does it. and so will the next 3. I also added a more basic background with a nice, coloured in name. This was also probably the quickest drawing I made in the past while, taking just 4 days. I really like this character, especially how their hair came out. While I did take colours from the original drawings, this one took the most liberty with colour selection. The last thing I'll say about it is that the mouth was the most difficult part. It seems I cannot do open mouths or smiling for my life. The only reason their face doesn't look 200% weirder is because I put a white line to be their teeth. Otherwise it looks like they're looking at a burger.

#2: Finch

Here's my second, this is based on a character by @fimvie. It took quite longer. That was mainly due to Zeldathon, but this was a little tough to make, there were many redraws. I was initially going to have more outlines for the wings, but that looked too busy. I had to erase all the lines for the wings and redraw them. Beyond that, you can see it's mostly similar to the first attack, except the outlines don't have much varying width. I could've done an outline or not having shading or a background, but I just didn't feel like submitting the attacks that way.

#3: Rowan

So I'm not a person to draw a lot of fan stuff since I came back, but I do still like The Owl House, and this character by @coxinhadoce47-art got my attention. I kept to the same style as before, but I also did the eyes in an slightly TOH style. I was very surprised that this character used mainly purples and red. I'm not sure if any colour on the character is between orange and blue. I also really love the background I made for it. The sky and snow were amazing to make. I especially like adding the bright celestial objects which I added, even if they're small dots.

Also, at this moment, I realised that attack titles didn't need to be just the name of the OC. With that, I wanted to test how long they could be by creating a 2600-character long recipe for buffalo blue cheese hot dogs. Unfortunately only 256 characters can fit in there, so I couldn't put that in, but I didn't leave a character to waste.

#4: Tanniet

My last drawing of Art Fight, and my first friendly fire. This character is by @majoracats. While I thought it would be initially quick, fast enough to maybe do a fifth attack as an outline, I has to turn this in several hours before the event ended. I had to switch my schedule this week to ensure that. It's mainly because I had to redraw the shape of the body multiple times. Tanniet was way taller before, but I felt she needed to be shorter. I made her shorter, but that also involved changing other most other things to keep it proportional. Regardless, I'm proud of what I got to do.

This also has the most detailed background. There's plenty of stuff, textures, and shadows. Surprisingly, that wasn't what took most of the work.

Final Thoughts

Now that this is over, I'll be returning to regular art soon. The thing with Art Fight though is that it completely reset my plans for drawing. I have little idea as to what to make next now. Will I keep up the pace? Probably not, this required doing little in my free time other than drawing, and I want to do other things again. But it won't be long until the next piece.

As for next years, I think I learnt two things. First, after the next attack you submit, post it here with nothing but the credits, rather than writing a million words like me. Second, draw outlines faster. That seems to be the main slow down, I need to get outlines better quicker so I don't need to spend time doing revisions.

Beyond that, I would like to see if I'd be interested in just doing an outline drawing or just simpler drawings. The main reason I went all out on these four was because I liked doing the textures, shading, and text. It's been quite a while since I've done just outlines, but it would be a way to quickly learn them. Art Fight has also gotten me more interested in art events, I can use them to figure out how to draw more, and keep within a time limit.

Anyways, that was my first Art Fight season. I can't wait for the Art Fight postseason.

Concept Pitch: A Story With Magic through Bonds

This actually comes from someone asking me on my community Discord what I’d do with a concept where magic was derived from emotions. I saw the pitch while I was out grabbing lunch and fifteen minutes later got home and typed this. That’s literally all the time it took for me to come up with the concept and the like because brain go brrrrrrr. Yes, the choice to post this is because of what I said in the last post. Also yes, this is a Lumischa idea (I’d write this original though because besides the archtypes it has literally nothing to do with TOH) even though I strictly made myself not use the names because of... *gestures to the rest of what his blog has been as of late* Also, I literally have a channel dedicated to asking me what I’d do with various concepts on my Discord because brain is fast and I like making concepts almost as much as working on them. Really wish I’d gotten more of that latter one done so far this year. ----------- So actually, I think this was the reason I wanted to go back to Fairy Tail because this being loosely the concept of a magic system, or an element of it, is not new at all. The power of friendship is one of the oldest tropes out there. Fairy Tail doesn't even really do anything new with it outside of screaming Nakama a lot. BUT. Making it the explicit magic system is interesting to me. I would admittedly likely mix it with a magic system driven by emotion. That usually, dependent on the type of person you are, you have two main types of magic. Someone who is happy and caring might be light and healing. Shy and anxious might be darkness and lightning (one to hide, one channeling the frantic energy). If you're calm and analytical, you might be ice and spatial magic. However, the strongest spells and many spells that dip into secondary elements can only be done by being close to others. Have a good relationship with a fire and water set of parents while you yourself make barriers because you're protective? Suddenly you can summon walls of fire and water, or even steam by combining all three. A spatial mage who is besties with a light mage might be able to suck the light out of a room making it quite literally impossible to see because there's nothing for your eyes to grab onto. Love in this would be incredibly powerful but unpredictable. It isn't connected to a single type of magic but instead an amplifier, and so able to do the greatest good or greatest evil. A healing mage in anguish for a lost love is one of the only ways you get necromancers as their entire magic is cursed and warped by love to raise the dead. A fire mage trying to get rid of a threat to their loved ones may cast Flare instead of Firaga and let out a flame so powerful that it blows up a quarter of the town, even if the magic also is incapable of harming the one they love. A light mage and spatial mage may be able to cast Wish but only if their goals are in alignment. So what would the story be? Well, it's me so...

You have two mages, likely the spatial/ice and light/healing mages that I've been using mostly for examples. They live a small, quiet life as one gets ever better at their magic, hoping to enter the lucrative business of being a teleporter mage (because even if it's connected to emotions, high level magic is high level magic) and the other helps them deal with the stresses of school and training while giving out healing magic and potions for money. Actually, I would likely have it be that mixed with a spatial or water mage is the only way to make potions as only they can trap the magic, making what types of potions any mage can make incredibly limited.

They're given a quest to get something, or they find out about something that they themselves want. Possibly an artifact even (Incredibly rare because to inscribe magic requires magic itself to be a core of who you are which mostly comes from sociopaths who emulate emotions as them being lost in the emotional tide leaves them just having a nugget of magic in them that has no direct correlation to anything else.) that could help the spatial mage reach her goal of being able to cast teleportation magic on a regular basis. One problem is that neither are adventurers and where they must go is a rain forest so wet and muggy and full of life. This makes the more combat capable of the two at a severe disadvantage as spatially affecting living things is just a problem so the more likely you are to have an extra fly in your spell, the more likely it is to tax you more than it should have or just fizzle. The ice magic is... Obvious for why it would fail. They could have ways around that but the easiest way is to get an adventurer. They can't afford a the extra tank, rogue and melee DPS though so they have to go cheap. Luckily for them, spatial magic can just obliterate locks and there's an offer at the adventurer's guild from a peculiar person: A fire mage claiming to be strong.

Most mages, those who really decide to focus on their magic, aren't the strongest because of how much energy the spells can take from them. That isn't the strangest part though. She is listed as ONLY a fire mage. That is, to put it lightly, bizarre. She has emotions so where is her secondary? Or is she only anger?

Upon meeting the mage... Well, she doesn't seem like an eternally pissed vortex of hate so the question is still there which she'd shut down and say it just let her focus on her one magic. She's mostly practically trained so don't expect anything fancy but she can burn hot enough that in a forested environment, the ice magic they already have will come in handy for if the flames get a bit out of control. Otherwise, she'll be perfect for helping them cut through. She even demonstrates incredible control with her flames, burning a hole through one of theirs shirts but somehow not even touching the skin beneath with the heat.

Then the adventure part which I wouldn't have down immediately, it's the most nebulous, but this is of course where the relationship, and the issues with it, start forming. Combined magic becomes more unpredictable as both in the couple start falling in love with the fire mage and wonder what that means. The fire mage keeps having to save them which isn't normal for one who should be all anger, though she claims to just be doing her job. The magic being added to the other two's magic back though isn't fire though. They're not sure what it is because their internal conflicts over getting close to the mage are causing so many issues in them.

And then the fire mage gets her surprise. Going to save one of them, she raises her arms to take the hit of an attack that will kill her... And a barrier appears. Her second magic: Protective magic. She doesn't want to talk about it, doesn't even try to keep casting it (except privately where she can't) and eventually admits she doesn't know why it showed up or how it works. She has never used it.

This makes the fire mage more vulnerable and emotionally compromised and in that opening up comes opportunities for all of them. Opportunities to talk, to work together, to share and to confide. For the couple to finally talk about their conflicted feelings and how they definitely love each other still, deeply and truly, but that there's a reason why they're being pulled towards the fire mage. Towards the one they are questionably wanting. The fire mage challenges them after all. Adds a spice to their life neither could before with her feisty attitude. However, she's also been more dependable and brave than either of them. A rock that is only now showing the need for support. Support she's taking for some reason despite obviously not wanting to or normally being against it.

The real question adventure wise is what sort of threat to make the finale that requires a combination of all three of their magics in order to overcome. Not just in a combined fashion but also individually. Something only their relationship and bond can triumph over.

But yeah, that's the concept I think I'd go with for that. I'll also pin the suggestion so I can easily refind this for inspiration down the road when I'm feeling better and trying to find something new to type! I also just hope you all like the concept! -------- And yeah, like I said, this was come up with in like 15 minutes plus whatever time it took for me to type it up. When I say you can throw ideas at me and get a lot back... You can get a LOT back very quickly. And I hope you liked this and I hope to maybe do something with it someday honestly.

i have a running theory that hunter was at least a little genuinely inspired by coryn, because not only do they both

have face scars

have a complicated past that involves being cruelly raised by a major villain and lied to their whole life

try desperately to earn nonexistent love from said villain, then gradually start to seek freedom and the truth about their situation/existence instead

experience real caring & kindness from others which ultimately helps them to switch sides and find their true family

remain haunted/chased by their awful family even so

have a barn owl motif (coryn is self-explanatory, hunter’s golden guard mask and casual color palette as a whole all read very barn owl-y to me)

have something to do with wolves (please look at hunter in the wolf shirt if you haven’t already)

but then we have the fact toh already referenced ga’hoole once before. scientists explain

Guys, I Think The Leaks Are Fakes Made By The Owl House Crew

yes yes i know, right now that might be a WILD ass claim to make but i want those who are reading this to hear me out and read this whole post, because I've been chatting with friends since these leaks happened and i think there’s reason to suspect we might be getting punked here.

And i say this fully accepting there is a chance i could be entirely wrong about this and they could be real, but I think there’s some reason to doubt the episode actually was leaked to the internet.

Now to get those who need it up to speed, the first of the three specials for toh s3 “Thanks to Them” is airing this Saturday on the 15th, it’s a big 45 minute episode that takes place on earth in Luz’s town of Gravesfield. There was a comic con panel about it a few days ago were some fans got to see some sneak peaks, it was all over the internet and everything.

But the day after, some images floated around, 6 of them mainly, claiming to be spoilers from this episode and everyone went WILD with anger, rightfully so, this huge ass episode got leaked to the internet and spoiled for everyone? Man what a way to ruin a week huh?

Well i thought the same for awhile too, but i’ve had some time to cool down and talk to others and guys....something isn’t right about this whole situation.

Below i’m gonna explain why this whole situation feels REALLY off and why I think there might be a chance that not only did the episode NOT leak, but the leaks were fabricated by the crew itself.

And just to be safe, i will do so without showing said leaks, nor will i tell you exactly what’s in them.

Those who saw them will understand, but for those lucky enough to avoid them, i’ll give you an idea of what about them makes me and others suspect something isn’t right.

Now i’ve had episode leaks before in fandoms, it’s nothing new, they can happen to any fanbase due to issues with scheduling, or mishandling, or episodes being put up online and some people get to it fast.

So the idea of this happening isn’t odd.

However, i raise you this, because i found this to be REALLY Strange.

How come it’s only these 6 images?

Remember when ST and EE were shown privately to the TOH discord by crew members as a treat before they aired? Remember how afterwards there was a ton of images about lumity blushing and amity’s parents?

We were told the ENTIRE EPISODE was not only LEAKED, but put ONLINE.

And yet all i and anyone else have seen are these images and people claiming they’re real, and nothing else.

There were gifs, clips, dozens of frames from willow’s dad’s holding hop pop books to the “That’s rough buddy”. There was so much about these episodes the moment the internet found them.

So let me get this straight? Those episodes the moment the fandom gets them get dozens of gifs, clips, drives to watch them, screenshots, memes, and fanart.....meanwhile this HUGE 45 MINUTE EPISODE has nothing but these specific 6 images?

I’ve never seen anything besides these images floating around when it comes to the the claim the episode was put out, there are no clips, no audio, no gifs, no dialogue being mentioned, nothing.

Is that not strange?

Don’t you guys think if the entire episode was leaked we’d see more then these specific images? Don’t you think we’d see MORE then these shots?

Like this is a big episode, and there is nothing else worth spoiling? Nothing about the wittebanes? lumity? Huntlow? any other big reveals? You’d think if the episode was revealed those would be leaked too right?

Isn’t it so odd that these are the only leaks out there? if there’s video, why doesn’t it seem to be posted anywhere? Heck, where is the video that shows off what’s happening in the leaks with the biggest spoilers?

it’s also strange how this got “Leaked” over a week before the episode comes out, because how in the heck would someone get access to the full episode THAT early? When episodes usually leak, if they aren’t shown privately, it’s either the day before or because of a scheduling error.

So that also seems odd.

There’s also this to consider, the content of the images themselves.

I won’t go into detail obviously, but you know what i found so off-putting? That the images in question proved a specific theory, proved a few theories and predictions people were floating around the fanbase...theories that aren’t something that’s strongly supported by any current evidence or even liked by quite a few people.

The last images are so....out of nowhere too. They’re sequential enough that they could tell a story of what happened without context and some of them are DEFINTENLY SHOCKING.

But the first two, they have nothing to do with the context of those last 4, so why did they get leaked? they reveal nothing, they’re also things we get to see in the promos that just were released.

Except, if you consider they were “Leaked” to make these leaks seem more real.

Don’t you think it’s odd two of the leaks are things that ended up in the promo that showed up later that day? i mean, what are the CHANCES?

But if you were on the crew, and you wanted the fans to buy into the leaks, you WOULD pair up the fakes with real ass images the fans would see later that day wouldn’t you?

It’s so oddly deliberate.

You would also make leaks that would support big theories and have shock value so people were bound to spread them more. Which is EXACTLY what these ones are.

And if you’re on the crew, you know what the characters are wearing, so even easier to make them look real, because no matter what clips are shown in any disney promos or commercials they will appear to line up with the leaks.

There’s also other off stuff, like how one image is VERY oddly cropped compared to the others, or some character inconsistencies, some even seemingly off model.

“But the 6 minutes in HD are a thing-”

yeah and if someone wanted to fool the fanbase into thinking these leaks were real they WOULD release the 6 minutes alongside it to claim the episode had to be out.

The thing is, the 6 minutes have already been leaked to the fanbase from the nycc panel to the entire fanbase the moment it ended, it’s not as if putting the hd version out there will spoil anything because everyone already basically saw it.

And again, if the episode is OUT, why is that the ONLY footage that appears to have been posted anywhere? The footage we the fans already know about and saw?

And i wanna send off the rest of the suspicious details about these leaks by talking about the crew.

The crew, has been DEAD SILENT about these leaks, they have not said a word about these specific ones, not even to warn fans about them or how upset they are or anything.

So....

Which is not what they usually do, they have warned fans before, so why not warn us about these supposed BIG leaks about a big episode?

And ok, maybe they don’t wanna make a fuss about them, fair enough, but there’s something else.

Rebecca Rose, who works on this show, liked this tweet just recently.

Now for those who don’t know, Alex Hirsh (Voice of King and Hooty) is the creator of Gravity Falls, another Disney Cartoon. That cartoon is infamous for it’s mysteries and secrets, and Alex, actually made a fake leak about a major spoiler to troll the entire fanbase.

He made this tweet after it successfully tricked the fans.

Now not only does he work on this show too, but you wanna know where these “Leaks” started out? 4chan and reddit.

Same place his did.

What are the chances?

What are the chances a crew members likes this old tweet about his stunt NOW of all times? When the episode has supposedly been leaked?

Now would it suck to assume the entire fanbase got fooled into thinking the episode was leaked and all the posts made about shaming the leakers were completely for nothing?

Oh yeah.

For the crew to pull this stunt and make us all look like doofuses would be insane.

But i think there’s reason to find this whole situation off and i hope this post makes you all reconsider some details you might not of considered before. Maybe we were leaked, maybe this is all a huge coincidence.

But if you ask me.

This is all too fishy for my liking.

Hunter

Awww he loves you even more now.

It was a hard day, after all he did have belos as his uncle. You saw how he snuck into your house that night tired and he looked almost hungry. “Stay here hunter let me get something for you”. You said as he laid onto your bed. He looked at you with curiosity.

Ten minutes later you walked in a plate of his favorite food. He smiles at you with a small smile and you help sit him up. Handing him his food he felt so happy your there. “Thank you y/n”. He said as he took a bite from the Meal you made him. He ate it pretty fast and you were slightly surprised about how fast he ate it. “Done”. He said cleaning the edges of his mouth. You ate the rest of your plate then took it down to the kitchen.

Walking back to your room you sat down on your bed and hunter felt your hands run through his hair. “Thank you again y/n I love you”. He says yawning and dozing off. You kissed his head and laid beside him, “I love you too hunter”.

Willow

She’s so happy to have you.

She’s sitting beside you as you scroll on your scroll her head on your shoulder. She was staying the night at your house you suddenly realized that you or her haven’t ate all day. “Hey sweetie I’ll be right back”. You said putting your scroll down.

Coming back with the plates you gave her the plate and she smiled realizing it’s her favorite food. “I love you so much Willow”. You say happily as you eat off your own plate.

Taking the plates down to the kitchen you cleaned them off and she got changed in your room. Walking back in you saw her laying in your bed waiting for you, “that was good but I think it’s time to go to sleep”. She says yawning. You laugh and lay down beside her wrapping your arms around her you slowly feel your self doze off.

Raine

Just what they needed.

They walked in and stretched their limbs. Then a nice smell hit their nose,”y/n what are you making”? They asked walking in the kitchen. They saw you making their favorite food and stood beside you to watch you make it. “Any special reason why your making my favorite food”? They asked and you smiled at them. “Well you’ve had a hard week so I thought I’d make you something”. You say as they give you a small smile.

Grabbing the plates they help you get everything set up. Walking over to the counter you and them sit down and eat. “So that’s what happened with my day”. They say after telling you what happened. “What happened with you to day” ? “Got a half day”. You told them, “why”? They asked you then went on to tell them about how a ‘Karen’ started to be bitch, Luz taught you the meaning of Karen.

Eda

She needed this

She comes down in her pjs and smells something. “Y/n what are you cooking”? She asks going into the kitchen and sees you with a whole lot of shit. “Y/n how did you even”- “stole everything”. You say as you make her favorite food. She smiled . “I did learn it from you”. You say. “I’m flattered”. She says flipping her hair. “I’m glad to have flattered the owl lady not many get to do that”. You say as her face turns red.

Setting the food down in front of her you and her eat and shit talk all of her ex’s. (except raine)

IDEK, this is just unadulterated chaos

It was not going well for sita. Sure ram and her bhabi had returned to their village with the promised weapons and they had gotten bheem with them, but right now? Right now she wished they were still in Delhi.

"IT'S YOUR FAULT!!" "HOW IS IT MY FAULT??" "YOU THREW THE CARDS AROUND!!" "HAAN TOH??" "WHAT DO YOU MEAN HAAN TOH??"

She was really hoping to kill someone. Who thought it would be a good idea to get someone as competitive as ram and y/n to play together in the first place?? Now bheem was sitting there in between both of them cowering as they fought.

The reason was ridiculous. Y/n had helped bheem with a game. More specifically with a card game. And he'd won. Twice in a row now, which had sent ram to yelling at y/n and bheem for cheating and then he'd thrown the cards at them. And now a card was missing.

"You threw the cards na. Clearly you lost them!!"

"Well you got up in the middle and went the kitchen so it has to be you!!"

"For the last time, I did not have a four of spades!"

Sita's headache had really hit a breaking point. Grabbing both of their heads she bashed them against each other, hard enough that both of them yelled.

"That's ENOUGH. YOU'RE BOTH GROWN ASS ADULTS ACT LIKE IT"

Still rubbing her head y/n whined, "Sitaaaaa, it's not even my fault. This idiot here is careless and stupid and he can't accept that. Where is my mistake??"

"Excuse me!!?? Did you just call me careless and stupid??"

"Haan toh, jo ho wahi toh bulaungi" "Achhaaa....."

"Ok that's it. I'm out. You two can kick and scream and cry all you want. I'm out"

Ram called out this time "areee where are you going?? We still have to finish."

Sita swore she developed a crick in her neck from how fast she turned. "I don't know ram. Away from you three that's for sure. Ab mai jaa rahi hun aur tum teen," she said pointing to ram, y/n and bheem, "bhaad mein jaa sakte ho."

"Si- Sita that's not fair yaar. Maine kuch kiya hi nahi" bheem had finally decided to pipe up. Unfortunately for him, she was in no mood.

"You see my face. This is the face of someone who just does not care. Bye."

With that finality she walked out and slammed the door behind her and leaned against it, trying to rein in herself.

"Look what you did. Ab sita ko manana padrga. Sab tumhari galti hai."

"Waah bheem. Ab sab meri galti hai. Aree jab dost tum jaise ho to h dushmano ki kya zaroorat."

"Both of you shut it. Aur ram, bheem ko kuch mat bolo. Sab tumhari hi galti hi."

"Achaa. Sab meri-meri galti hai na"

Sita felt the warning bell go off a little too late. "NO wait-", she burst into the room, just in time to see ram and y/n hit each other with the pillows in the room. Which promptly burst to shower feathers everywhere.

Sita counted to ten, before putting on her sweetest smile and saying in a deathly calm voice, "Ram, y/n you have till 10. Agar pakde gaye na toh mai itna maarungi, itna maarungi ki paida hone par afsos karoge." Both of them looked ready to bolt "Scram"

They didn't need to be told again.

Sita turned to see bheem still sitting there, looking highly amused.

"And what, are you smiling about?"

"Nothing. Just-" he pulled out a card from under him. "That was fun"

"BHEEM!!!"

I was going on about this with some friends the other day but. The thing that compels me most about “Belos is Philip (or his brother)” as a theory is that not only does it look extremely likely/plausible as far as actual evidence within the show goes, but I can also see exactly where I would go with it thematically, which makes me think it’s even more likely and that some really incredible story may come from it

Like, this is me speculating but tell me it doesn’t sound like exactly where TOH could go with this:

You have Philip (and brother) Wittebane, two 17th century men from colonial Connecticut with a distinct interest in witchcraft, which obviously has lead to them being ostracized from their community for their unusual, dangerous interests -- and to the Demon Realm becoming something of a haven for them.

Fast forward to the present and it’s clear that Belos’ plans involve some kind of a fusion of the two realms -- the Day of “Unity,” the vision he showed the Coven heads of the Titan’s head superimposed over a Human Realm city, etc. Glyph magic, the type of magic accessible to humans, doesn’t work in the Human Realm because it relies on the presence of the Titan. If Belos is Philip, this is the ultimate “I told you so” to the people who persecuted him for wanting to be a witch -- bringing Boiling Isles-style magic to the Human Realm for good, and as a person in power this time, no less.

And then you have Luz, the 21st century teenager whose witch fantasies also got her ostracized -- for being weird, not dangerous, but still. Who is having a crisis about her future because she feels torn between two worlds, and promised her mother she would stay in the Human Realm even if it meant never doing magic again.

I can already see and hear the “We’re not so different, you and I” villain monologue brewing, as the Emperor tries to convince her not to stop him because, really, they want the same thing don’t they? To be able to be witches “back home,” and stick it to all the people who told them they were wrong?

It’s just..... so extremely satisfying thematically, and one of the biggest reasons I’m convinced Belos is one of the brothers, honestly. I could be wrong, but there’s just so much there to explore that feels in line with the show’s themes and I Am Looking for sure

(And a side note -- I am almost positive that there was a falling-out between the brothers over wanting to do exactly this that is the reason only one of them is around. Which. If Hunter really is a clone or descendant of the other brother, and if for the final confrontation over this he’s on Luz’s side, not the Emperor’s....

Well, let’s just say he’d sure be following in the footsteps of someone I imagine might be very, very proud.)

Narrative Brilliance Behind Lumity

Lumity existing at all - on a Disney show! - is already a Big Fucking Deal. But I want to take a look at exactly why it works so well, because Dana and her team are fucking geniuses.

[1.03] I Was a Teenage Abomination + [1.05] Covention

In her first episode, Amity gets introduced in a classic archetype - the bully who gets knocked down a peg. When she returns in Covention, she tries to play that same role again, but ends up making a connection with Luz at the end. She downplays it, but it’s easy to tell that her decision to free Luz from the oath makes for a big turning point. The end of her brief antagonistic role, and the start of a bond that feels all the more meaningful because of the effort and vulnerability it takes from both of them.

[1.07] Lost in Language

When Luz and Amity meet up again, Luz tries to befriend Amity through her siblings, which... does not go well, at least at first. Amity accuses Luz of being a bully, but they end up working together for the first time, and they both see new sides of each other.

So far, pretty standard rivalry-turned-friendship fare. What’s notable, however, is how fast it’s moving. There’s no stagnation, they’re visibly growing closer every time they interact.

[1.12] Adventures in the Elements

Amity takes a while to show up again. She reappears in Adventures in the Elements, and things start getting a lot more interesting before she's even on-screen.

Luz starts the episode talking excitedly about what she’s looking forward to at Hexside: “I’ve got a new crush, and her name is education!” The sentence takes just long enough to let the viewer wonder - is Luz talking about a crush on another girl? A girl at Hexside? It wouldn’t be Willow, since her friendship with Luz has stabilized by now, and they have an easy enough time meeting up already. So instead, it brings to mind the girl Luz has been actively trying to build new bridges with - Amity.

It turns out Luz wasn’t actually talking about a person at all. But for anyone who’d tried to guess Luz’s crush and come to the cleanest answer, it’s enough to suggest another perspective on Luz and Amity’s relationship, and to wonder if there was a reason Luz portrayed her interest in learning as a crush on another girl.

When Amity does appear, she backs up this reading. For the first time, she starts an episode being friendly towards Luz, while Luz goes through a second round of poorly thought-out schemes to try to get closer to her. Once again, they work together to sort things out, and Eda comments at the end of the episode about their banter being adorable.

At this point, there’s some notable implications, but nothing concrete. Not yet, at least.

[1.13] The First Day

One episode later, everything changes again. Luz and Amity’s direct interactions are about the same as in the previous episode, but...

Amity: “So, you two go to the same school now. That doesn’t change anything.”

Luz doesn’t seem to pick up on what this means, but it’s a big, flashing, rainbow signal. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a fictional character talk this way about someone they didn’t have a crush on.

At this point, Amity starts being the one to show more overt interest, but it’s backed up by Luz having showed interest first. Also Luz ends the episode by getting a rainbow uniform, for good measure.

The previous episode raised the question of if TOH was a show that would depict queer characters. This one answers it with a resounding yes, and changes the question to - exactly how queer is it going to get?

[1.15] Understanding Willow

With all that on the table, Luz and Amity meet back up properly in Understanding Willow. For the third time, the two of them team up for a magic adventure, but this time they set off on it together, rather than only joining forces once they have to. This time, it’s Amity’s fault rather than Luz’s, and she has to grapple with her mistreatment of Willow as well as accepting the vulnerability of showing Luz memories she’d rather hide.

Ultimately, Amity acknowledges what she did wrong and pledges to do better for Willow. Willow accepts the gesture, and the two of them start re-building their connection. This is important for both Willow and Amity, and also important for making it so that Luz continuing to get closer to Amity doesn’t undermine her friendship with Willow.

This episode also introduces Willow’s two dads, and shows Amity blushing at Luz. The show is getting increasingly visibly queer, which sets the stage perfectly for...

[1.16] Enchanting Grom Fright

Luz shows up to Prom - er, Grom - in an incredibly queer outfit, and tries to fight the monster in Amity’s place. When Amity has to jump back in to help, Luz finds out that Amity had wanted to ask someone out but was afraid of being rejected, offers to be her date instead, and the two of them fight the monster while dancing. They’re no longer at the event and they could have fought just fine without dancing, they just wanted to do it.

At the end, Amity’s note becomes visible, and we see that the person she’d wanted to ask was, of course, Luz. Between the buildup in the previous episodes and the “pretend date” in this one, that was the only answer that would make any sense. Still, having it stated outright like this was huge.

It’s at this point that Dana started publicly talking about TOH being queer, and about how she’d wanted to make a point of making characters like herself.

[1.17] Wing It Like Witches

Fans commented before the episode aired that “Wing It Like Witches” shortens to “WLW” - and based on the episode’s content, that sure seems to have been intentional. Luz hasn’t picked up on Amity’s interest in her yet, but throughout the episode, Amity keeps getting flustered from her interactions with Luz.

Amity: “Me? On a team with you? Running around in cute uniforms? Sweating?”

This episode functions as a buffer of sorts. With the previous episode spelling out the situation of Amity crushing on an oblivious Luz, we get to see things simmer for a bit before developing further.

This is the point where Disney itself started referring to Luz as bisexual. Like Amity’s note, it logically followed from the setup - she showed interest in Nevareth back in 1.02, and there was every reason to expect her to reciprocate Amity’s feelings - but confirmation is still a big deal, especially from The Evil Mouse itself.

[2.02] Escaping Expulsion

After showing up several times in a row throughout the school arc, Amity takes a backseat for a bit while Luz takes on the Emperor’s Coven directly. Which is interesting in its own right, suggesting they’re saving that particular confrontation for a bigger climax, but I’m here to talk about Lumity.

When Amity returns to the story, her parents finally make a proper appearance, and they try to murder Luz to keep her out of the way. Amity, of course, isn’t having it.

Amity: “Get away from my Luz!”

In addition to Amity standing up for Luz (as well as Willow and Gus) in a bigger way than ever, Luz starts reciprocating Amity’s blushes, making the clearest confirmation yet that she reciprocates Amity’s feelings as well.

[2.05] Through the Looking Glass Ruins

At this point, Luz’s interest in Amity is becoming obvious enough in-universe that Gus, as well as Amity’s siblings, all point out the implications of her visits to the library.

Luz: “Hey, Ed. Hey, Em. Picking up Amity?”

Emira: “Nah, looks like you got that covered.”

The exchange with Ed and Em also sets up another neat little narrative trick. Edric brings up the topic of his upcoming date without specifying the date’s gender - with Luz and Amity already in focus, the viewers are primed to wonder, rather than making the assumptions that might apply to other shows. This makes it easier to catch when Emira refers to Edric’s date as “they”. It’s important to lead viewers to a mindset that will help them pick up on signals, and that’s something TOH does masterfully both here and with Lumity in general.

Once they meet up, Amity helps Luz sneak into the restricted section of the library, and they end up basically planning a date to the human realm. They get caught and Amity gets fired, leading to Luz going on her own mini-quest to get Amity forgiven for it. Completely offscreen, because at this point her skill at those quests is plenty well established.

Meanwhile, Amity changes her hair from the way her parents demanded - a classic way to change a character’s appearance to illustrate development. When Luz returns, successful, Amity gets up the courage to kiss her! And then freaks out and runs away while Luz collapses in a queer daze.

[2.06] Hunting Palisman + [2.08] Knock, Knock, Knockin’ on Hooty’s Door

It’s all set up. Luz and Amity’s feelings for each other are obvious in and out of universe, they’re both still too nervous to believe the other one is interested but after that kiss, they should be able to sort things out the next time they meet up. Easy sailing to the finish line, right?

Enter... the challenger. In Hunting Palisman, Amity stays home, and Luz comes face to face with her new rival. He’s a jerk “prodigy” who’s associated with the Emperor’s Coven and faced off against Luz once before, but this time they get tangled up in a mess and have to work together to escape. The two of them start to build a complicated connection, get a scene that teases the idea of a kiss, he turns out to be the same age as Luz and to be getting pushed around by an abusive family member. Seems weirdly familiar, somehow.

The idea of the show actually going in that direction is, of course, ridiculous. Luz/Hunter doesn’t have the narrative weight to compete with Lumity - it’s only caught up to around Lost in Language, while Lumity has far more substance by now. Regardless, making a show of competition - even one clearly meant to lose - makes the conclusion that much sweeter, by making it harder to take it for granted. It also serves as a nice little reminder of Luz being bisexual.

[Edit: There’s plenty more to Hunter than this, of course. For this post, I’m focusing specifically on the brief ship-teasing.]

That brings us to Hooty’s episode. (I also want to point out Raine and their relationship with Eda being another example of queerness in TOH that’s fucking revolutionary in its own right, but that’s a separate topic so I’ll leave it there.)

Luz: “You’re scaring the echo mouse! And if he’s not happy, I’ll never make my way into Amity’s heart.”

Luz starts the episode by (accidentally) talking about her crush on Amity, and also revealing that she thinks Amity reciprocating would be conditional. The line comes up again later in the episode, just to make sure the viewer remembers it.

Amity’s interest in Luz is clearly not conditional. They’ve both made up their minds and the viewers know it, even though neither of them is convinced. But Luz doesn’t believe that - her previous encounter with Amity probably didn’t help - and that’s what drives her freak-out over the “Tunnel of Love” Hooty creates for them.

Luz thinks she has to ask Amity out the right way, which leads her to destroy the tunnel and accidentally make Amity think she isn’t interested. It’s another wrench in the progression, and there are stories where that might really set things back. But TOH isn’t one of them. It’s proved to consistently resolve these kinds of shenanigans within the episode where they start, including the conflicts Luz and Amity have run into at times.

At the end of the episode, Eda tells Luz to not worry about getting it perfect and just go for it. Which is quite good advice, especially for someone you already know well. If they’ve already formed a clear impression of you, they probably know enough about whether or not they’d want to date you that how you ask isn’t gonna matter much.

Luz asks Amity out, she agrees, and as Hooty says, it’s adorable. We see them hanging out and studying the echo mouse together afterward, and Hooty refers to Amity as Luz’s GF, which - honestly, with how it still seems to be a thing for straight girls to say “girlfriend” to refer to girls they’re friends with, “GF” might be a more clear term.

And that brings us to the present. We’re just 27 episodes into a 46-episode show, and with all the skill Dana and her team have shown so far, I’m sure all the main characters are in for a bunch more excitement by the time we hit the finale. TOH has been blowing me away so far, and I can’t wait to see what else it has in store.

So I finally watched The Owl House

I wish I’d do this with every show I watch but it seems like only a lucky few get the She-Ra style rant of love treatment. Well, I finally watched The Owl House after my dash having been flooded for the past couple of weeks and I have some thoughts. Slight spoilers below.

First off, I love the whole vibe. I had a faint idea that this show would be about magic but I didn’t know much before watching - except for one thing, we’ll get back to that. The way it builds its world and deals with magic, though, is so refreshing. And I just have to mention here that I laughed out loud at all the Harry Potter jabs, they were hilarious. I expect we’ll learn much more about magic and its users as the show goes on but as far as the first season goes the introduction was really solid. It strikes the right balance between leaving things to the imagination but being more than “wave wand and magic happens”. It’s colourful, it’s creative, and I even like the ovens and school tracks, despite knowing that the story is about not conforming to those. It makes the Boiling Isles unique and make me want to learn more about the world even beyond the characters and the main plot.

TOH also presents a world that’s much more macabre than I was expecting from the Disney Channel, not that that’s a bad thing. I found myself thinking of Adventure Time at certain points and pondering, at scary moments, how kids would react. I think kids love this, though, and besides, nothing can be more scarring than Courage the Cowardly Dog was. It’s not that terrifying, of course, just daring enough to stand out. Overall the show has what I would classify as more of a Cartoon Network vibe than a Disney Channel one, but I admittedly haven’t really been following many Disney shows. In any case, I dig it. I dig the weird creatures and the beautiful backgrounds and I appreciate how alive the Boiling Isles feel. It doesn’t take long for TOH to immerse you in its world so I’m for one am hooked.

I make a big deal of loving the world itself because rarely does it happen that world-building stands out to me so soon in a series. I do love carefully constructed fantasy worlds but for the most part I’m more interested in the characters themselves. Here, I’d say it’s close to being a 50-50, which is something that even Avatar can’t say with its elemental masterclass in world-building (which is mostly because the character depth there is unrivaled but still). So yeah, kudos to The Owl House for achieving this. From Luz’s glyph magic to the covens and the titans, I’m excited to explore this world more.

Now, the characters. The real meat of any story. Starting with Luz, I have seen some criticism that she’s a generic hero so far, the “I’m a weirdo”, heart of gold, upbeat variety. I don’t think this makes her bland, though I do admit that being told over and over again that she’s weird makes me less engaged, even she’s also shown to be weird. I like the message of her arc and that the chosen one trope was deconstructed almost right away. I like that she’s relentlessly enthusiastic and kind to people and I like that she doesn’t have to get more bitter in order to get development. Instead, she learns from her mistakes but keeps being herself and brings her unique spirit to the Boiling Isles. We need protagonists like Luz, not just because she’s latina and bisexual but because her learning process doesn’t involve cynicism. Sure, there is a lot she needs to learn but her heart is presented as an asset and a sort of source of magic. I’m excited to see where her story goes, for sure.

I’m gonna write briefly about the other characters before I get to my favourite one. Eda is super cool and I quickly got over the fact that she’s not Beatrice Horseman, lol. She embodies such a youthful energy but the show also allows her to be a middle-aged woman comfortable in her own body - well, owl curse notwithstanding. Also, her relationship with Lilith is one of my favourite parts of the whole show. Eda subverts so many of the mentor’s traditional tropes and I’m here for it. I kinda thought she was the villain based on her design and when I didn’t know anything about the show but hey, happy she’s not.

I don’t think I’d even seen a picture of King before starting to watch the series and at first I thought I’d get tired of him real quick. He’s the type of character who can get really annoying instead of endearing really fast if he’s not given any depth or charm, both by way of writing and voice acting. Luckily, I ended up liking King and his antics. His design is indeed adorable and Alex Hirsch is a genius. The only time I felt like he went too far was, perhaps surprisingly, in the book writing episode, “Sense and Insensitivity”, but even there going too far was the point. So yeah, King’s also great, there’s much potential in his backstory and general character.

Alright so really quickly, other characters: Willow and Gus are generic best friend characters and though they already have other things going on, I expect more development as the series progresses. I like that Willow is actually super powerful, just not in the way people expected her to and Gus is clearly also talented despite being younger. I’d be happy to see more of the other kids, get more familiar with Hexside. Edric and Emira are fun characters but they were really shitty in their first episode so I was kind of surprised they weren’t more of a nuisance to Amity later on. I’m all for supportive siblings so I wouldn’t mind a good relationship between the three but I feel like it’s more complicated than that with the Blights.

Finally, I also have to mention that Hooty is... well, quite something, isn’t he. Much like with King, I thought he’d be much more annoying but somehow the show is self-aware enough that it makes Hooty tolerable. I’m almost always torn between feeling sorry for him and being thoroughly weirded out, and I think that’s the intention? It’s fitting that he’s the titular character as he embodies the tone of The Owl House well in my eyes. He’s there for the comedy but there’s just enough there to hint at something more. Very bizarre, strong CN vibes, here for it.

Now that I’ve written a paragraph more about Hooty than I expected to, let’s talk about Amity. Listen, no other character stood a chance to be my favourite as soon as I learned Mae Whitman voiced Amity. That woman gave me Katara so now I have a quasi Pavlovian response to her voice. I’d also say that I knew more about Amity going into the show than I did about any other aspect of TOH. I heard somewhere that she started out as an antagonist, I knew her parents were abusive, and the reason the show blew up on my dash and my general online bubble is the Grom episode. Lucikly I only saw stills of Lumity beneath the crescent moon but the pure Sapphic energy of that was enough to gay migrate me to this show. I’d like to note it here though that The Owl House is a good show in and of itself, the queer rep is just a nice extra. I’m gonna spend the next couple hundred words going on about Amity and her crush on Luz but I don’t value only that. The Gay Migration is great and rep is great but I’m also grateful to have a solid show behind it. That being said.

I’m a total dyke for Amity Blight. I was very biased before even being introduced to her character but I genuinely find her to be fascinating and she has great potential. She’s developing quite quickly, like much of The Owl House, but an arc not being stretched out for several seasons before getting a rushed conclusion is refreshing. The progress hits all the beats and the only note I have is that I want more. She starts out as a generic bully but the opportunity to be more is there from the beginning. We find out early on that she used to be friends with Willow, we see that she works hard and values honest work. When she becomes Luz’s rival, it doesn’t last long before Amity shows that she’s open to new perspectives. That’s not to defend or even justify her earlier and nastier moments, Amity was rude to both Luz and Willow. But through all that, she becomes a complex character who does bad things but isn’t a bad person and grows when she gets the space to. I think that’s neat.

Luz’s decision to befriend her might be cartoon logic but as someone who subscribes to the “kill them with kindness” ideology, I can totally relate. Amity’s softer side doesn’t take long to show and “Lost in Language” is such a great episode to show how complex people can be. Again, I was already biased when it came to Amity but she’s consistently shown to be capable of self-reflection and growth when others give her the chance. I think her past and potential future friendship with Willow is a great way to explore many different topics and I’m trusting the show to do it justice. I also can’t wait to meet the rest of the Blights, if only to get me some angst and further develop Amity. I half expected Grom to take the form of her parents. Too dark for Disney? Well, we don’t know Amity’s dynamic with her parents, exactly, but there’s so much subtext and potential. I love what we’ve already seen from her but I’d also say that she has one of the greatest potentials in the show.

Another way in which this potential manifests is Lumity, of course. Again, they’re developing quite quickly but that doesn’t mean it’s rushed. I’d love to explore Amity’s crush more and what Luz means to her. The Grom episode surpassed all expectations, still and gifs don’t do the stunning dance sequence justice. The animation is so smooth, the colours are amazing, the music is on point and the Sapphic vibes complete the picture. Poetic cinema, truly. Molly Ostertag and Noelle Stevenson are really out there giving wlw animation fans everything we ever wanted, huh. It also warms my heart that the crush is made very clear, not just by Luz’s name being on the note but by the delightful gay disaster that is Amity in “Wing It Like Witches”. I never thought I’d ever see such a relatable useless lesbian in animation so kudos to Dana Terrace and the whole crew. Wow, how far we’ve come.

So yeah, Amity is a funky little lesbian and I’m a 100% here for her gay disaster moments, but I also love where Lumity is going thematically. They’re great as foils and I’m hoping that they won’t get together at the very end. Look, I love me some Bubbline, Korrasami and Catradora, but it’s time a wlw relationship had the chance to exist onscreen and not only in the last episode. The Owl House has a great chance to do that. I know the creators don’t want romance to be the main focus and I respect that, I think the world they created deserves to showcased and explored to its full potential. Lumity could be a great subplot though, as representation on the one hand and as a thematically interesting dynamic on the other. Plus, Luz and Amity are just cute and sometimes, it’s as simple as that. Oh, and also the whole Little Miss Perfect thing? One of the best fandom discoveries I’ve made in a long while. Not only is the song truly perfect for Amity, I love that Joriah Kwamé went on to write Ordinary as well. This right here is why fandom is beautiful.

I think that’s about it for season 1 initial thoughts. The moral can be a bit on the nose at times, especially in the early episodes but the show is ultimately for kids and I appreciate its message. Interesting world and magic system, good characters, great potential for later seasons, just a well put together show that I’m really glad I started watching. I’m kind of sorry I didn’t keep up with season 1 as it was coming out but I would not have been able to wait between episodes. The pacing is good overall, deffo moves fast but I wouldn’t call it rushed, and the “filler” episodes still add something to the story. I’m not sure if I would still feel like the show moves at a fast pace if I hadn’t binged it but in any case it isn’t rushed, the necessary beats are all there and have time to sit. I’m going to watch as it comes out from now on so hopefully season 2 will arrive early next year.

So many thoughts on the new episode! WARNING: TOH SPOILERS! If you haven’t seen the new episode, just skip over this post!

So, here are a few of my thoughts and questions on the new episode:

*What’s up with the mysterious book in the beginning of the episode with no author? Hmmm...

*Seeing angry Luz made me so sad because I hate to see my baby hurting, but I also kind of loved it

*Seeing Luz blame herself for Eda’s capture hurt my heart

*I have so many thoughts on Emperor Belos. At this point, I’m pretty much convinced that he is human. Firstly, characters behind masks usually have something to hide. Secondly, his staff is very different from Eda or Lilith’s. It has a more mechanical feel to it. I think that’s how he uses magic without having to use glyphs, along with the palismans he keeps eating, if my human theory is correct. I’m honestly not sure about any of this, but these are just some of my ideas. Also, I’m so curious about the blue eyes...

*When they were dragging Eda away, and all she cared about was Lilith making sure Luz was safe...excuse me while I go cry 😭

*I was not surprised at all when Emperor Belos wouldn’t heal Eda, but how did Lilith not see that coming? Belos doesn’t seem like the “keeping his promises” kind of guy

*I’m a little sad that Amity wasn’t in the episode more than she was. I get it, with the broken foot, but I was really hoping she’d be there to help Luz, even if it was just in the crowd with Willow and Gus

*I can’t begin to make you guys understand just how hard I laughed at the scene where Luz and King were standing on the grass next to the don’t step on the grass sign. It’s probably because I was watching the episode at 4 am, and was slightly delirious, but it was still one of my favorite scenes

*I absolutely loved seeing Luz’s power crawl, especially with the parallel of fighting the warden in the first and last episode. Seeing how she easily took out the warden and the other guards just goes to show how much her magic has grown

*I also love seeing how resourceful Luz has become with using the glyphs

*I can’t count how many times my heart broke in this episode. When Eda tried to send Luz back to the human world, and Luz looked so devastated...UGHHHH!

*TALK TO THE GLYPH, WITCH!

*Why could Lilith use her magic in the human world, but Luz couldn’t?

*I’m so happy that we got the full backstory of why Lilith cursed Eda. I still don’t think Lilith should be forgiven quite yet, after everything that she’s done, and I’m interested to see how season two will work with that

*I like how Luz didn’t exactly forgive Lilith, but knew that she needed Lilith to save Eda. It wasn’t until Lilith proved that she was at least trying to be a better person that Luz began to forgive her

*Can we just talk about Willow standing up in front of everyone and going against Emperor Belos? I loved seeing how much Willow has grown since Luz first met her. She has become so confident and so powerful and I love her so much. I’m also excited to see where this leads. No one was questioning Eda being petrified, other than a few comments, and I don’t think anyone was going to, until someone (in this case, Willow) stood up and pointed out what was wrong. I think this is just the beginning of a rebellion happening in season two, or at least the start of one

*I’ve seen some people complaining about how Luz seemed to be too powerful in this episode, especially when fighting Belos. I think there are a lot of reasons for that. There is no way that Belos was actually trying in his fight against Luz. In his mind, she is just a human child, and she’s not worth the effort. Also, not only has Luz become a lot stronger, she also had Eda’s staff, which, I believe, makes magic stronger and spells more powerful.

*Nicking a piece off of Belos’s mask was such a power move

*Why does Belos want the portal so badly? He was willing to let Luz go and let her save Eda, all so that he could get that portal. What’s so important about it? I don’t think it has anything to do with an invasion of the human world, since there doesn’t seem to be any magic there, so what does he want with it? Is there something, or someone there that’s hiding in the human world that he wants to get to? Is there something about the human world itself? It might also have something to do with the Titan, seeing as Belos said “The Titan will be pleased” when Luz gave him the portal. I’m so excited to see how that plays out next season

*Knowing that giving up the portal also means Luz potentially saying goodbye to her mom just makes it so much sadder. We all know that she’ll eventually find her way back, but Luz doesn’t, and why does Luz have to keep hurting like this?!

*Lilith sharing the curse with Eda and taking on the burden that she believes (and kind of does) deserve was such a good scene, and is one step in the right direction for Lilith and Eda trying to fix their relationship. I also love the idea of Luz teaching Eda, and maybe Lilith, how to use magic with the glyphs

*The small changes in Eda and Lilith’s design, with the two different colored eyes and the new streaks are great and I love them

*I had no idea who the mysterious person in the owl mask at the end of the episode could be until I saw someone else say that it might be one of Amity’s parents, and that would make so much sense if one of them takes over for Lilith. It would make it even harder for Amity if one day she had to choose between the Emperor’s Coven or her new found family

Overall, I loved this episode, and I think it ended the season perfectly. Yes, there were some things that seemed a little fast paced for me. I would have liked to see a longer fight between Luz and Belos, or maybe a longer episode would have worked, but that’s not super important. I’m so excited for season two, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for us, with both the development of the characters and their relationships (especially lumity) and the overarching plot. Sorry that this post was so long. I have a lot of thoughts

Epilogue | About Thesmora

The Somnambulist strained against Odhen’s hands, the nav-stick rigid and stubborn. His hands were sweaty and raw, his muscles shaking as he tried to keep the ship from tearing in half from the intense speeds she was flying through. The Somnambulist had taken too much damage and hadn’t received nearly enough love. It was a miracle she was still holding fast.

“Climb, girl, climb,” he spoke endearingly to the metal ship as they broke through Takodana’s stratosphere. Heat from the friction of speed licked at his windshield.

Using the back of his hand, Odhen whipped the sweat from his forehead and pushed it up into his greasy hairline. A shaky laugh breaking through the empty cockpit as he finally saw stars.

He felt like he could finally slouch back in his chair, then he heard Koa scream loud and shrill. His heart started to race all over again as he swallowed against the dry lump in his throat. A weak sigh leaving him as he blinked away the images that plagued his mind. He blinked away the sound of his wife’s dying breaths coming through, delayed and nearly inaudible, via a weak tight-beam transmission. Now his eyes were watering and he stared down at the medal meant to signify heroism on his jacket and he sobbed, hand pulling the pin so tightly it threatened to tear through his jacket’s tough material.

Relief surged through him when Koa went silent. The whole ship was deader than a graveyard after that. The only sound was the Somnambulist’s soothing thrum. Ton-Ton waddled over, exhausted pants leaving his unseen mouth as he handed a data-pad to Odhen, revealing in Jawaese what was on it.

Odhen wiped his face with the rag that always hung on his belt, the smell of grease was strong, but he didn’t care. He read over the coordinates and swore. Fate was a cruel mistress. Of all the damned places in the entire galaxy, of course their next stop would be the one place he swore never to return to. D’Qar.

Ton-Ton jumped several times, trying his best to get into the co-pilot seat and Odhen chuckled with no humour as he watched his friend struggle to get up. The Jawa took offence at his rudeness and pulled out a wrench from under his robes and threw it at Odhen’s head.

In sluggish movements, using limbs too tired to function, Odhen blocked the wrench from hitting into his face but that just transferred the impact to his shattered elbow and he winced.

“The elbow, mind the elbow, you short devil!” Odhen hissed as he rubbed at his old war injury.

With a grumble, he picked Ton-Ton up and placed him on the chair, an accusatory finger wiggling in front of the Jawa’s one eye, “How many times have I lectured you about hittin’ people? This is my ship, I’m in charge and I’m orderin’ you to cut it out before I space you.”

Ton-Ton swore at him in rapid-fired shots, his little hands whacking the air causing his robe’s sleeves to swish about. Odhen was about to trade his own insults but then he suddenly stopped himself. He was no mood for their exhausting dynamic.

He punched in the coordinates and with a prayer that they wouldn’t be turned to stardust, he set the ship into hyperdrive and just watched the raining stars for a quiet minute.

“I need a drink,” Odhen complained as he licked the sides of his dry cheeks. “Keep us from collidin’ with a satellite will ya’.”

Ton-Ton dismissed him with a wave, then barked over his shoulder as Odhen stood to leave.

“I’m not your barmaid, get one yourself,” Odhen replied.

Ton-Ton made a snide comment and Odhen shook his head before giving in to the Jawa’s request, “Fine, what d’ya want?”

Ton-Ton’s pitch raised with uncertainty as he prattled on. Odhen held up his hand to stop the little firecracker from droning on and giving him a headache.

“We ain’t got none of that. I don’t even know why you think we would. We’re smugglers, not snooty aristocrats. We got some Thessi hooch and we got one cask left of that fancy Ne'tra gal stuff we were supposed to deliver. Pick your poison.”

Ton-Ton answered in monotone and Odhen nodded in response.

“Hooch. Commin’ up,” Odhen blinked slowly as he made his way to the lower decks.

Odhen passed the med bay on his way to the lower deck. Inside he saw Koa in a medically induced coma, her vital organs hooked up to old and beaten machines that needed replacing at least a decade ago. Her warm breath fogged up the mask that covered half her face. Fresh blade slashes and green contusions on her bronze skin marred her arms and legs to imperfection. It would be more accurate to say one and a half arms now.

There was a faint smell of antiseptic and burned hair. It itched at his nose. The white gown they had dressed her in reminded Odhen of funerals and with that simple, unwanted thought, his heart palpitated uncomfortably.

She was so young, too young to look like this. He didn’t think he could survive seeing someone die again. It filled him with fear.

He felt heavy all of a sudden, a name he hadn’t uttered in years slipping out as he braced his jacket at the left side, “Len…”

All of a sudden, the young, freckle-faced boy who held himself like a man, wandered up to Odhen, a sparkle in his eye that meant he knew who he was approaching –and it wasn’t Odhen Boro the smuggler, it was the other guy, the so-called hero.

“Heya, we didn’t get the chance to properly be introduced. I’m-“

Odhen frowned, he didn’t need another name to go with another face. He knew enough of those already and no good had come of adding more to his memory. “I don’t care.”

“Oh,” Zeeke’s mouth fell, his outstretched hand crumpling into a ball as he shoved it back into his pale blue utility pants, the other held onto a blood-stained brown jacket too big for his slender arms. “I just… I wanted to ask-“

Odhen brushed passed him, determined to be alone, “If you need something go ask the droid, it’s what he’s bloody there for.”

“I- Uh… sorry. Of course, I just wanted to say thanks, is all,” Zeeke ducked away in search of Watts.

Odhen pressed the pads of his fingers to his eyes until he saw white spots.

“Now I need two bloody drinks,” he grimaced.

Calista sat with her head in her hands and her body slumped against a cold metal wall. The floor was uncomfortable, digging through her thighs until it found bone. She didn’t care. At least it meant she was still capable of feeling. She was exhausted. After having a disagreement with Mokk-Toh about his not wanting to be put under to allow his wounds to heal faster, Calista decided that the one thing she needed more than anything was solitude. Or the next best thing in a smugglers ship.

The thrum of the engine was louder here below deck. It smelled of ozone and the air tasted like foam. It was probably the effect of being so close to the fuel converters. The darkness was soothing though, and that’s all that mattered to her.

The sound of clanking echoed from an equally dark compartment, the grumbling and grumpy swearing let her know it was Odhen. His frustrated argument with inanimate objects made her smile. He may have been ungroomed, greasy and of poor manner, but something about Odhen struck Calista as being a man with a heart too sensitive for this time. A man guarded because he feared his own empathy, his own vulnerability. He reminded her of what her father would have turned into had he lived to see another war engulf the galaxy.

Another set of footsteps descended the ladder. Poe’s voice called out and Odhen yelped in surprise.

“Sorry,” Poe chuckled lightly. “Just looking for the kid. You seen him?”

“He ain’t here, last I saw he was by the med bay,” Odhen said.

“I just came from there, he’s not in the cockpit or the comms room.”

Odhen cleared his throat, “Look, I can’t help you. I don’t have eyes everywhere. I’m a pilot, not a Jedi.”

“You been drinking?” Poe asked with concern.

“What of it?”

“I just expected the man in charge of navigating us through dangerous space to be sober enough to know the difference between which button launches a torpedo and which brings down the landing gear,” Poe said snidely.

“Why does everyone insist on talkin’ to me?” Odhen’s voice got an octave louder, “This is my ship. Don’t like how I run it, the airlocks that way.”

“What happened to you?” Poe asked almost with pity. “Those medals are Resistance issued. And assuming you didn’t steal them, you used to be more than… this.”

“Yeah, well if you’re the best General Leia has to offer, you’re in for a rude awakening kid. Wipe those stars out your eyes, this is war, war ain’t no place for poster boys like yourself. If you expect to live through it, you’ll be sporting a tough shell too,” Odhen spoke rudely and yet his words held an ominous premonition to it.

Heavy feet clomped away and the whir of a door sliding open followed after.

Calista heaved a sigh. All she wanted was some damn peace and quiet for two minutes. Two. Minutes.

She took a breath and cast her eyes up, staring at the buzzing light. Poe walked into the room and froze for a moment, taken aback by the fact someone else was down there with him.

“Uh, sorry, I didn’t mean to…” His dark eyes narrowed, a thumb pointing behind him. “You didn’t hear any of that, did you?”

Calista smiled and said lazily, “I didn’t hear a thing.”

Poe chuckled, motioning to leave before something in his face decided otherwise, “You alright down here?”

“I’m fine.”

For some reason, he didn’t buy her words. Poe ruffled his hair before skittishly moving towards Calista, one thumb looped around his belt loop. After rocking on the balls of his feet, he sighed and slid down beside her.

There was only the sound of the engine thrum for a long time. Calista’s eyes kept wandering through the ship, her nails digging at the patterned panelling on the floor. Poe held his wrists with his knees digging into the crooks of his elbows.

“So, princess huh?” he said softly.

Calista chuckled, “You assumed. I merely went along with it.”

“A heads up would have been nice, now I look like a right fool in front of royalty,” he mused.

“Well, fool is a good look on you,” she joked.

He held out his hand, “We didn’t get the chance to have a proper introduction. Poe Dameron, Commander with the Resistance.”

Calista blinked slowly, fatigue circling her eyes, “Calista Ordell, Princess of Thesmora.”

They shook hands and then returned to staring at the wall in front of them.

“How’s your friend doing?” he asked.

Calista inhaled deeply, “I’d rather not… if that’s okay with you.”

Poe nodded, changing the subject, “You know, you two look a lot alike.”

Calista eyed him, nibbling at the corner of her mouth as she felt the muscle tug, “Is that your way of saying it wasn’t your fault that you mistook her for me?”

Poe scratched at the scruff under his chin, “Maybe…” he smiled. “But you do resemble each other.”

Calista started undoing one of her braids to keep her hands busy, “There’s some Ordell in her blood. A great grandmother or something other, I think. She got the warmer eyes though.”

“And yet, why do I sense that she’s pricklier than you are?”

“Because you spent five minutes arguing with her. That’s like arguing with a stone wall.”

They turned to each other and laughed in breathy puffs of air. Calista’s eyes growing smaller from the smile on her face. A bit of the weight was taken off her weary soul. She was thankful to him for that.

“She means a lot to you, huh?” he asked, fingers brushing against the letters stamped on his dog-tags, mind split between two places.

“I’ve known her for more than half my life. She’s the closest thing I’ll ever have to a sister,” Calista remarked with fondness, her voice quaky. “I can always count on her never be afraid to boss me around –to challenge me or have a normal conversation with me.”

Poe’s shoulder nudged hers, “What do you call this?” his finger circled between them and the dark, empty room.

She smirked, answering truthfully, “A distraction. One I was in dire need of… thank you.” She said earnestly. “It feels good to talk about anything other than war.”

Poe let go of his dog tags, a sliver of sadness pulling his lips back down, “I know the feeling. Vaguely.”

“I’m sorry about your men, on the ship,” she said wholeheartedly after another beat of silence.

Poe smiled with gratitude, but he didn’t look like a man in mourning, he was just shaken, “The apology is appreciated but not necessary. You didn’t kill them.”

“What were they like?” she asked out of curiosity.

Poe’s jaw tensed before he replied with hollow words, “They were soldiers.”

Footsteps descended down to greet them in their small space.

“Hey hotshot, you down here?” it was Paige.

“In here Tico,” he called out.

She followed after his voice, knocking into a few things on her way over. The first thing Calista noticed about her was that she wasn’t wearing her woolly hat. She looked much younger with her jet black hair falling in waves to shape her face. Poe was stunned for a moment but shook himself back to reality. The atmosphere had changed.

Paige’s eyes went wide when they met Calista’s, “Oh, uh… Your majesty –Am I allowed to call you that?– I wasn’t expecting to find you down here. I just…” She pointed at Poe. “Came down here looking for him.”

“Calista is fine, titles don’t matter much this far out in space,” she reassured the flustered Resistance soldier.

Paige let out a breath, fingers running through her much tamer hair, “Good, thought I botched that one for a moment. I’m new to this whole… socialising with royalty thing.”

Paige shuffled awkwardly before tossing a brown jacket at Poe, “I found Zeeke. He got the droid to clean that for you by the way.”

Poe gave a mock salute with two fingers, “Where was he?”

Paige’s eyebrows rose high as she folded her arms, “In the comms room sending a tight beam.”

“That was the first place I looked,” Poe informed her as he slipped into his Resistance issue jacket.

“You guys must have gotten your wires crossed,” she huffed with an amused smile.

Poe stood from the ground, but didn’t offer Calista a hand up. Somehow he knew she wanted to stay in the dark a little longer. He nodded curtly at her with a knowing look and started towards Paige.

“You feeling better? No more nausea or vertigo?” his voice grew lighter.

Paige shrugged as she walked beside him, “Won’t lie, the nap helped a bunch. Mostly, I’m excited to get back to Rose and scraping the gunk off the wing thrusters…”

Calista closed her eyes as she took in the encompassing comfort of silence once more. The vibrations of the engine burrowing even deeper into her bones, all the way to her marrow. The vibrations turned comforting, like being held safely inside a womb with the sound of a mother’s heartbeat echoing throughout. Calista’s heavy lids grew heavier and she wasn’t strong enough to keep them open any longer.

Calista dreamed she was back on Thesmora, feet bare and planted on the white sands of the beach. The water was so clear it reflected the golden sunset back in a spectacular fashion. The warm water rushing up the sand lapped at her toes. She felt unburdened here. Free.

“Calista,” her mother’s voice sounded out from behind her and Calista gasped.

“Madani?” She whispered in shock as she spun around.

Mother?

Lo and behold, there she was, the magnificent Lenora Ordell. Queen of Thesmora. Mother. Wife. Sister. Ruler.

Her smile creased at her face, coily hair styled elegantly, eyes dusted purple –her signature colour. She held out her hands and Calista practically fell into her embrace. When she did, she felt smaller, shorter… younger.

Looking up, her mother seemed to be taller. Calista looked down at her hands and noticed they had shrunk to a child’s size, so had her toes. Her foot stepping in a footprint nearly three times the size of her own.

“You’ve got big shoes to fill,” a familiar masculine voice spoke out.

Calista removed her face from the sweet-scented fabric of her mother’s dress.

“Farhi?” she mumbled with joy

Father?

Calista turned to the side, eyes catching sight of the handsome and poised looking man who held his shoulders square and had the kindest golden eyes in all the galaxy. Duke Romaine Andrastas Belamon, consort to the queen, father and senator stood proudly before her. He looked barely a day older than when Calista last saw him. All her life, her father had been the older of her parents, but now, in the dream, it was her mother that looked older.

Childish Felix, beautiful, wryly and ill-mannered as he was, sprinted close to Calista’s stubby feet, tripping her onto the sand. Tears streamed down her face as she watched her brother run back to the ocean, her father lecturing him for his bad behaviour.

Lenora knelt down, knees digging into fine sand.

“Always find the courage to stand, my child,” a beautiful smile graced over Lenora's timeless features, her hand reaching down. “For as long as you believe you have the strength to keep going, then you will have the strength to keep going.”

Calista rubbed at her cheeks, wiping hot tears away as she dusted her trousers and accepted her mother's outstretched hand. The sounds of her brother’s laughter tickling at her ear.

“Remember Calista, just because you got knocked down, doesn’t mean you belong there.” Lenora helped Calista to her feet, glancing over at the golden shores of the beach, a content look in her eyes.

As Lenora stepped to the side, a purple water lily grew in the spot where her feet had been planted. It was her coronation flower. The symbol that marked the start of her administration. To her people, purple meant strength in the face of adversity and great willpower –it also meant stubbornness and beauty. The water lily symbolised balance –someone of old faith with an open mind.

Calista stared back at her own smaller footprint and noticed bare hyphae strands twining in the ground. No flower as yet. No identity as a ruler.

Boots crunched into the sand, clunky armour grinding at the joints. Calista jumped in fear when she saw Versengen encroaching towards her family. His footsteps turned the sand to glass, heat effervescing off the boot prints.

“You look so much like your father,” he repeated.

Calista spun around to look for her father, eyes darting anxiously, but he was gone, so was Felix. Nothing but clouds in the sky and waves on the shore.

Something warm meandered along the length of her hand and she was shocked to discover it was blood. Calista’s head snapped up, seeing Maligma’s polished, dark nails wrapped around her mother’s throat while a sharp dagger was held close to her mouth. A fresh cut opened her mother’s throat so all she could do was gag voicelessly.

“Did you have a good day at the beach?” Maligma asked with an unhinging smile, her hair and body caught on fire, devouring everything like wildfire.

When she looked back at Versengen, he was inching his helmet off his head. The sun’s glare blinded her momentarily, and in that moment she thought she saw a familiar face hiding underneath the helmet.

Then a cold touch shivered her out of her dream.

Mokk-Toh hovered over her, his body looking the same; bruised, cut up and in need of rest. He removed his hand from her arm and stood upright, “We’re here princess.”

“Where’s here?” she rubbed her eyes to chase the blurry vision.

“D’Qar.”

[Live Report] 7/28 - Timbre of Hearts vol. 2

Utaite: clear, amu, Yuuku (secret guest: nero)

Instrumentalists: Wing (piano), rafma (guitar), fu-rin (percussion), YUU (violin)

I went to both portions!

Probably the most time I’ve spent at a small live, having fun talking to... literally everyone... I talked to the four that know me, met up with a lot of friends from Canaria, and for the second portion, @brotheryanny came with me!

I’m... going to count how many times I cried, so every time you see “((I cried.))”... yeah.

Before the live:

I met up with so many of my Canaria friends... also, there were some people that walked up to me and asked me if I was Rui-san, and they said that they heard about me from Canaria bartenders/other customers, which is... so embarrassing, I don’t know what to do... I met so many new people because of it though...!

First portion setlist + comments:

Mr. Music / clear, amu, Yuuku

When the music started I got super excited... Also, amu is the best at English out of all of them, why did clear and Yuuku do Yuki’s spoken word part... WWWW

Sharuru / clear

... it was perfect. That’s all I’m going to say, because... there really isn’t anything else to say...

celluloid / amu

Before amu sang this, he introduced himself and welcomed everyone. He sounded so awkward and nervous, and he told us that he really didn’t want to do an MC part, but clear said he needs to, to which he said “uso~n”, which, was adorable. He said he doesn’t participate in many lives, so he’s still not used to talking to crowds, but he’s glad clear invited him again!

Jougen no Tsuki / amu

Holy shit, amu. When the music started playing, I knew it was Jougen, and I didn’t think his voice would fit the song... but it does, and I’m ruined. I know it’s on one of your Mu albums, but I haven’t been able to listen to my copies just yet since I don’t have a CD player, but, just... holy shit, amu.

Gossip / Yuuku

What the hell, Yuuku. You’re just gonna pull out this eroi as hell song out of nowhere... and sing it so well... I’m going to fight you.

Blurry eyes / amu

amu was getting over a cold, so he wasn’t able to sing it at full power, but it was still so pretty...

I actually don’t know the original song (I just know it’s a L’Arc~en~Ciel song...) but his smooth voice really fits it...

366 Days / clear

clear called this one of his favorite songs, and he said he’s excited to sing it at a live for once~

Kataomoi / nero

When clear said there was a secret guest, I knew it had to be nero. When he called for nero to come out, nero made this... really weird moan sound... and came out... www

clear said that nero’s fans told him that he sang this at his one man in June, and that it was really, really good... so clear asked him if he could sing it for his TOH solo! nero said it was his first time hearing about this, and got super embarrassed because clear kept saying nero’s fans were like “clear-san, clear-san, did you hear, nero-san’s Kataomoi is so good, it’s really, really good”.

nero introduced this song as the song that got him into utattemita 8 years ago, and it’s him and clear’s signature utattemita. It was so cute, he was thanking clear so much for bringing him into nicodou...

Sarishinohara / amu, Yuuku

Okay, everyone knows Sarishinohara is my favorite song, so of course, when they introduced this, I cried. But that’s literally... not all.

They introduced this song... in a way I would have never dreamed of. They said that they were actually stuck on what song to sing (they already chose another, which was for the second portion), but it wasn’t until late June that they decided to sing Sarishinohara together, because... a customer requested it on a day they were both working in Canaria, and that customer was so moved that they cried. And that’s when they decided.

... I didn’t expect this at all. When Yuuku left the stage, amu also stood up, and when clear got close to him, he just... bowed... and clear bowed back... they exchanged no words... and the music started playing.

The last time I saw amu at Canaria, he was humming Fixer, and I was wondering why... I was going to ask him if he was planning on uploading Fixer, but once the musicians started playing the chords... I understood. amu learned Fixer... for this live... God, it was fucking rude as hell when I realized it. Their harmonies were so lethal. clear singing the melody, amu singing the upper harmony, and Yuuku singing the lower harmony... what the hell.

OKAY THIS WAS ACTUALLY THE CUTEST. They were all dancing around and just having a fun time... amu took Soraru and Ribs’s part, clear took Kashitarou’s part, and Yuuku took Lon’s part! Their ad libs were so godly, wow... amu and Yuuku’s harmonies as well... they’re all so much.

Once everyone left the stage, clear said that there would be another TOH in October, and it would be cosplay themed... Everyone got super excited, wondering what the costumes would be...

After the first portion:

I was just standing around, but I didn’t realize... that amu was in front of me. He came up to me and said “hi Rui-san!” I greeted him back. He asked me if I was alone, and I said yeah, but during the second portion, I would have a friend from England with me, and he said he was happy I’m going to watch the second portion too! I told him that he sang Fixer really well, and he was surprised, and kept asking me “really? really?!” and I said yeah, and I asked him when he would upload it. He said “Huh, I wonder when?~” and I got mad at him for baiting me. He then asked me if I got alcohol with my drink ticket, and I said of course, and he asked me if it was strong, and I said, I wish, to which he laughed a lot at. Someone passing by questioned “eh, strong?” and he just straight up outed me to someone I didn’t know, saying “Rui-san only drinks strong drinks”. Everyone around us started laughing (because so many people from Canaria went... sweats) and I told him that it’s so embarrassing. Everyone was reassuring me that it was okay, it’s really fun to watch, and I just... www. There was a line behind me to talk to amu, so I said I’ll talk to him again later!

I then went to clear’s line, and I ended up buying two more CDs... I talked to clear, and he was like, “Rui-chan, you’re leaving soon aren’t you...” and I said that I was, and that TOH was my last live before going back home, and he said he hopes I had a lot of fun during the first portion, and that he hopes I have a lot of fun during the second portion (I’m happy he remembered I was going to both parts;;). He said that his lives and Canaria will get so quiet and lonely without me, and I said I’m going to miss him a lot, and he said he hopes I come back to Japan soon enough, because he’ll miss me too...

Also his cologne is always so strong, whenever he holds my hands, you can just... smell it, so strongly. Even after several washes, it’s still there. What cologne do you u s e, clear.

Again, the lines were just so long, so clear took my hands and told me to enjoy the second portion, and I said I would. He smiled at me, and let go, and I went over to talk to nero.

It was... actually my first time talking to nero. I’ve seen him so much, but I always beeline to clear... I told him otsukare, and that I really loved his Kataomoi, and he said that he was glad! I asked him if I could get a signature from him, and he gave me one;; I was a little nervous so I couldn’t properly get a page from my notebook from him, but he tried looking over my shoulder to see what was in my notebook, www. He’s so cute. After he gave me a signature, I told him that I wanted to talk to him more, but my Japanese is so bad... and he said that no, it really isn’t, and that I should have more confidence because it’s really good...

He then pointed out my Totoro backpack and said it was really cute, and I asked him if he wanted to try it on, and he took it from me and wore it. He was pretending to walk around with it, and he started laughing. I asked him what was wrong, and he said that if he ever went out of the venue with it on, the police would definitely stop and ask him questions, and probably arrest him, and I couldn’t stop laughing. Other people around him were laughing as well, and I thanked him for talking to me, and he smiled so warmly to me. He thanked me for letting him use my Totoro backpack, and I said no problem~

After that, I went to go talk to Wing! She and another person were talking about Canaria, and Wing and I told them about all the adventures I have of her, and everyone else, trying to get me drunk, but it never happens, and the other person was so scared of me and my drinking capacity...

After talking to everyone, I decided to go get food while waiting for Yanny to arrive!

When they were getting on stage, it was amu first, then clear, then Yuuku... they were all grabbing their mics, but when Yuuku grabbed his mic, he knocked over the mic basket and he didn’t even notice until a bunch of us up front told him the basket fell over, so he scurried over and picked it up really fast, and when he got back next to clear, clear said he would tell his mom on him.

amu revealed that his hometown is actually... Okinawa. Which is huge, because... a lot of information about amu is really... unknown... In some interviews, when they ask him for his hometown, he just says “over there”... He talked about how it was like growing up there, especially during typhoon season because TOH was actually... during a typhoon.

But Okinawa... that’s really unexpected, honestly? I always thought Kansai, but...

amu introduced this song saying that because it’s raining like a typhoon is outside (to which everyone said that there is a typhoon going outside...), he’ll sing this to make the rain stop.

Yuuku did the same as amu, and kept saying that it was like a typhoon outside, and he had to correct him about it too... he then talked about how so many times where he had a live, there was a typhoon that day as well, so people started calling him a 台風男... He said he can’t even deny it because it’s true...

clear said that this is one of his favorite Vocaloid songs, and that we should all listen to it on nicodou, and also kept saying he sang it on his third album, Reunite... that we can still get at various Tower Records... so if we don’t have it yet... we should go buy it...

When clear called nero out this time, he just... made the weirdest noise... it was... like I don’t even know how to describe it, it was just... strange. We were all like... is nero-san okay...

... when nero got on stage though, he and clear started talking about Totoro... I swear, it was because of my backpack, I swear to god it was my backpack, because nero noticed I was in the front row and he smiled at me when I pointed to my backpack when they started talking about Totoro... they started talking about the point in the movie where Totoro makes the rain stop, and he wishes someone could do that to make the rain stop...

When clear got back on stage, they said that he’s sure everyone knows that he and nero are childhood friends, and they just talked about it a bit. They said they met in middle school, and that they because friends really fast. They would play outside a lot, and nero said he would always tell clear to do good, but clear then got sarcastic and said that he was always a good kid, and nero questioned if he was still a good kid, and clear said “for the most part”...

366 Days / clear, Yuuku

When Yuuku came out, clear said that Totoro came out, and they all just kept calling him Totoro while Wing played the Totoro theme while he just, stumbled on stage... it was really cute...

Before the song started, clear asked Yuuku how he was enjoying TOH, and Yuuku said he was having so much fun. He said he didn’t expect to perform with amu, let alone be friends with him, and clear said that this was the first time he ever heard about this, so Yuuku continued on.

He said that when he saw the new staff announcements come in for April, he questioned if the “amu” listed was the amu. He said he admired amu a lot before, so working with him, and finally performing with him, it’s been really fun.

They then started talking about Canaria, and how they recently went on a trip to the ocean recently. Apparently clear was the one driving the car, and they talked about the Peyang Gigamax yakisoba... Apparently Yuuku, Masaya (he’s another Canaria bartender, as well a CLEANERO staff member), and Lemo all tried it during the vacation, and they all apparently finished their servings... Wing couldn’t go on vacation with them, and so Yuuku and Wing decided to eat it on a twitcast earlier last week, and Yuuku said Wing finished her’s pretty fast, but he was so close to crying at the very last bite. He said he wouldn’t do it ever again, it’s something that people should only do once. clear said he didn’t do it yet, but Yuuku... then said that if he wants to do it, they should do it together, and clear was like “didn’t you just say you wouldn’t do it again?” Yuuku got embarrassed and apologized for being an idiot, and fu-rin hit the triangle on his percussion set.

They then started talking about the triangle, and Yuuku said that the triangle is so fun, and motioned in a triangular shape and said “ding” 3 times, but everyone was like “You’re wrong...” and clear had to correct him that there’s a corner on the triangle that’s open so you couldn’t hit it three times... Yuuku then turned behind him and saw that a corner was open and he apologized for being an idiot again... He’s so... dumb... WWWW...

After his apology, they finally started singing, but both of them apologized for breaking the mood, saying that their stupidity won’t match what they were going to sing next...

Yuuku called himself and clear “Peyang and Totoro” before actually singing properly...

HARMONIES... H A R M O N I E S... amu and Yuuku make a good combination, they really do... amu’s high notes plus Yuuku’s low notes... put it together with their incredible harmonization skills, and you get... perfection...

Risky Game / clear, amu

clear and amu... talk so much, there were so many times where they were about to introduce the song, but then someone would bring something up AND THEN THEY WOULD TALK ABOUT IT FOR ANOTHER 5 MINUTES.

When clear got on stage, he said hi to amu, but amu didn’t say anything and clear got mad saying that he should say something back, and amu just. Straight up roasted him. He said “hao~” and CLEAR GOT SO EMBARRASSED.

He explained to the audience that for a little bit like, 8-9 years ago, whenever he uploaded something, the description would start with “hao~” and even though he never said it at lives, he would be greeted by fans like that, and it was super embarrassing. He said he doesn’t even remember why he did it in the first place.

A fan in the crowd called out, saying “what about ‘kurukuru’?!” and clear then went on to explaining how fans would make him spin around once before saying “hao”, like it was a character change. Everyone started saying they wanted to see it again, and clear was so reluctant, but he ended spinning around, and in a deep voice, said “hao” and amu couldn’t stop laughing.

clear then took his seat, and he immediately asked if amu was free in October, and we all knew what that meant. With clear’s announcement earlier that TOH vol. 3 would be in October, and it would be Halloween themed, it meant that he was inviting amu to perform again. All of us gasped, and amu was... very confused, he must have heard that there was a third TOH, but I guess he didn’t know he would be invited to it again, so his raw reactions were just, so much for my heart. clear then took a seat next to him after amu said he would be available, and clear just looked so happy~

amu always says he doesn’t know how to sing the more recent songs, but he’s been listening to clear’s Fixer a lot lately and he fell for the song, and he said he’ll upload it for his late 10th anniversary upload! clear was like “oh, you fell for my Fixer?~” and amu was like “I didn’t say that, I said the song,” and clear looked so offended WWWW.

clear and amu then just... WENT ON TO ROASTING EVERYONE. They thought it would be fun to rank who the dumbest one is, and they said they’re all pretty dumb. THEY JUST KEPT GOING. amu talked about how he was so nervous to meet Yuuku the first time, so he asked one of the other bartenders, Kyosuke, about him, and Kyosuke called him “いいバカ”, and Yuuku then popped his head out of the door from backstage, and everyone just started laughing. amu then said that after a few hours of being with Yuuku on shift, he finally understood what Kyosuke was saying, and Yuuku just kept making faces to everyone on stage and in the crowd. clear then went on to roasting nero, saying that nero’s so ikemen, but he’s so dumb, that it’s just a waste, AND THEN RIGHT BEHIND YUUKU, NERO STARTED POKING HIS HEAD OUT FROM BACKSTAGE AND THEY BOTH WERE JUST MAKING FACES.

clear talked about how “ii baka” really suited Yuuku a lot, and then recalled when they first met at I-Star. Apparently, clear was just hanging out on a couch in the morning, and Yuuku went up to him and introduced himself, but instead of saying good morning, he said good afternoon, and he started to panic? But they apparently got so close really fast that the month after, clear invited him to work at Canaria. He recalled another time where Yuuku literally came to his house at 3-4 in the morning to give him something, and Yuuku said he didn’t realize that he could’ve just waited for a reasonable hour to come to give it to him. But clear then fondly said that Yuuku’s idiocy is something he really likes about him, and everyone was just, touched.

Fixer / clear, amu, Yuuku

MUGIC / clear, amu, Yuuku, nero

Just like the first portion, clear called for nero to come out so we can take pictures together before the last song. But as nero was coming on stage, Wing started to play the Totoro theme, and nero grabbed his microphone and started singing along, but it was very... n o i s y. clear asked him who he was, and nero said he was trying to mimic Meychan.

When everyone left the stage, clear was commenting that the second portion is usually quieter than the first portion, but in the second portion this time around, they were just... messing around so much, so it was very strange. (But the messing around was just too much fun).

After the second portion:

So, Yanny and I were just, crying over the setlist and how fun it was, and everyone started getting lined up to talk to everyone again, and I just.... had to do something.

I dragged Yanny to Wing, and introduced her to Wing as my friend. Yanny gave her a fan letter, and I helped her talk to Wing. Wing gave her a hug after receiving the letter... It was so cute. I told Wing that Yanny was also a pianist, and Wing asked if she wanted to play right now, and we kind of just looked at each other like, is this actually going to happen. I said I would sing along with whatever Yanny plays, and Wing was like “okay!” and just... escorted us to the piano. Yanny chose Lemon, and played the melody and a bass line, and Wing then... started playing to upper harmonies...

Yanny and Wing played piano together.

After one verse and a chorus, Wing thanked us and Yanny was just... paralyzed, www. She didn’t know what to feel--

When then got in line to talk to amu, because, I did tell him I would bring a friend...! Yanny gave him a fan letter! I asked him if he really meant what he said up on stage, that he’ll upload Fixer soon, and he said he will! I asked exactly when, and he said when his cold is gone, which it almost is... I’m so excited.

amu asked me to translate for him and Yanny, which I did. We just talked about a lot of things, and amu said that he’s been learning a lot of English from me at Canaria, which I wanted to scream at because, amutan... are you really learning English from me... He said that he wants me to bring Yanny to Canaria, and I asked him if he knew when the schedule would be out, and he said that it should be out the day after (which it was, sasuga bartender...). He said he’ll be waiting for us~

I told him I wanted to stay longer in Japan, and he just... straight up told me to run away (”逃げて”)... amu, your ideas are getting out of hand--

ALSO AMU ROASTED ME AND CALLED ME 雨女 LIKE I DON’T BRING THE RAIN, THAT’S YUUKU, HE’S THE 台風男, HE LITERALLY SAID SO.

(I feel like we were just talking so much that I... can’t even recall all the things we talked about... So I’ll just leave it at this...)

The line for amu was getting long, so I said we’ll see him soon, and we left to go see Yuuku. His line was short, but he talks so much to his fans, that it just, went by really slowly... When it was our turn, I didn’t even realize, until he called out “HEY!!!” AND JUST STARTED? DANCING? FUCKING AROUND? AND I STARTED DOING THE SAME THING AND STARTED YELLING “HEY!!!” BACK AT HIM AND WE WERE JUST DOING IT SO MUCH AND JUST DANCING AROUND? It just went on for a while too, until we noticed that nero was just... watching us. I invited nero to join us, but all he did was stick out his leg in our direction and asked if it was enough. Yuuku said “one more time!” and WE JUST STARTED DOING IT AGAIN, JUST, SCREAMING HEY AND BEING IDIOTS...

People were telling me that they could see my underwear/spandex whenever I kicked my leg up high, yet I kept doing it anyway, and nero had to cover his eyes, it was so b a d, I literally just met nero a couple of hours earlier and he saw me like that... oh well, I wouldn’t be surprised if he already knew about me before I talked to him, let’s be real...

I introduced Yanny to him (and Yanny gave him a fan letter as well), and told him we would visit him on the 30th at Canaria, and he said that he’ll be waiting for us~ I really don’t know remember what else we talked about, but he did give me this really cute signature in my notebook (he drew a cat www) and we took pictures together, which was so nice;;

(I felt his head press against mine when we took our picture together, that’s how close we were, I died.)

The venue was about to close and Masaya had everyone leave so they could clean up, but he let us go give clear Yanny’s fan letter, but we had to make it quick. I introduced Yanny to clear, and clear was so happy to meet another fan... he shook Yanny’s hand, and he shook my hands again and said he hopes to see us again soon, and we had to rush on out (we were the last ones there)...

Overall... it was such a fun live, and it just... was so much more precious that I just... knew so many of them, got to talk to them so casually, so easily... It definitely was a very special way to end my year here in Japan, and I can’t wait to see them all again, hopefully next year.

Probably not? Or rather, I would assume it isn't the predominant form of clothing, mostly because Fast Fashion is so tightly connected to Industrialization and Globalization, which are necessary for cheap mass production.

And I don't think the Demon Realm is globalized or fully industrialized. (More under a cut, because this got longer than intended.)

Industrialization: From what we've seen in the show, I'm pretty sure the Boiling Isles have just about started their industrial revolution, but the whole coven system resembles much more pre-industrial economic systems. So mass production is starting to become a thing, but it's not on the level of our world (-> Books are literally forged one at a time, for example.)

Globalization is not a thing on the Boiling Isles! They know about the existence of other places, but so far it doesn't seem as if there is any significant trade or cultural exchange with other islands (or potential continents.) There is the occasional contact with the Human Realm, but outside of Eda that's mostly trash and random object getting washed up at the beach - not exactly a basis for trade.

So, all the fashion is produced on the Boiling Isles, not in some oversea country with cheaper labor. (Though it's possible that the Boiling Isles have bad labor laws in general.)

Another thing that makes it difficult for Fast Fashion to become mainstream is the variety of Body Shapes on the Boiling Isles!

Of course, not all humans have the same measurements, but you can still find an average that'll fit most of them (badly).

But on the B.I., half of the people are biped demons, sometimes with more or less limbs than humans, sometimes half or twice as big as witches, sometimes only vaguely humanoid. So you either need different patterns for them, or you can only sell to witches and the more human looking demons.

With the school uniforms, we see that they are fitted and there are slight variations, (e.g. Luz having a wider belt) - but those are school uniforms, not fashion.

And of course, there is the question of how many people live on the Boiling Isles! Because it's a small, isolated country, there are only so many people it can support, maybe a few million, ten at most. So industry would never reach the scale it did in our world based on that alone.

(As a final point, I'd like to add that wearing the same outfit even for months seems pretty normalized - of course, the real reason is probably just that TOH is a cartoon, but I like to pretend that it's because clothes are just high quality and repaired rather than thrown out - Luz clothes definitely needed to be mended a few times throughout the show.)

With all of that said, Human Fashion does occasionally end up on the Boiling Isles - just not enough for it to become Fast Fashion, even if it started out as that.
