Morrigan Watches - Doctor Who - Season 1 Recap

So, I know I said I was gonna do one after every episode but that fell apart pretty fast, so here I am after season one, and I have so many emotions.  I’ll try and get to them all under the cut, but first things first: I LOVE NINE. I’ve said before that he’s not my favorite, but I think he’s top three for me.  He’s so... I don’t think naive is the right word, but he’s still fresh off the time war, and while he *seems* grumpy, he’s a bundle of sunshine, and he’s in love.

He’s so in love that he’s willing to break the rules of time and space for Rose.  He takes her to see her dad, and lets her try again, he lets Jack hang around because of her, he takes Adam along, even though it’s DEFINITELY a bad idea, and he does everything in his power to make her happy.  He’s showing off, taking her to the most impressive and interesting places, and it’s so cute, to be honest.  If someone had a crush on me and took me to see all of time and space, I would fall in love with them too.

Also, can we just talk about “The Doctor Dances”???  That duology (does that work for TV shows??) (The Empty Child + The Doctor Dances) has always been one of my favorites, mainly because of nostalgia.  (The first time I ever heard of Doctor Who was because a friend in elementary wanted to be the Empty Child for Halloween.)  But dear God, I love it.  

For one, we get an introduction to Jack, and Team TARDIS starts up.  And how goddamn happy the doctor is that no one has to die.  “Everybody lives, Rose.  Just this once, everybody lives.”  And it breaks my heart, cause it’s true.  Every single other episode in the show, at least one person dies.  And the scene at the end where Jack is talking to Computer, and then the TARDIS just shows up in his ship and they’re dancing, it’s just so pure and happy.  It’s pure fluff, and while I love the action (don’t get me wrong, the time travel and kick-ass sci-fi are the reason to watch this show), I also adore the little moments of fluff.  And this was the best fluff ever.  I live for that scene.

And speaking of Team TARDIS, that scene in “Boom Town” where they’re having lunch, and Mickey is getting along with the Doctor and Jack, (”I told you we should’ve turned left!” “That was my line!”)  and the Doctor is enjoying himself too, just laughing with the rest of them.  How fucking SAD he looks when he says “and I was having such a nice day.”  It’s funny, but it really, really isn’t because for once he was.   Also, “She’s an egg!!” makes me cackle, and I love it.  She didn’t have to die, and she didn’t have to go to prison.  She got a chance to start over, which is exactly what the Doctor wanted for her. (Which makes sense, given that the heart of the TARDIS is telepathic.  Thank you, my lady.)

And then we get to “Bad Wolf / The Parting of the Ways”.  UGH.  First things first, the fact that after all those years, hundreds of thousands of years, humanity still loves trashy TV is one of my favorite things. The decades and centuries pass, and yet there will always be gameshows, and dramatic reality TV.  Never change, Humanity. The scene where Jack and the Doctor think Rose is dead, it fucking shatters me.  You hear Jack screaming in the background, because for all he’s a flirty, jokey guy, he has a heart.  He wouldn’t do everything he does if he didn’t have a heart.  (Torchwood, the Face of Boe, etc.  I guarantee you he wanted to do good via the Time Agency, but then they stole his memories....)  And the Doctor just doesn’t do anything.  He lets them put a gun to his head, and Jack knows the game is up.  If the Doctor is done fighting, there’s no fighting to be done.  On to “The Parting of the Ways”:   The Doctor has a special place in his heart reserved for the Daleks.  And not in a good way.  He hates them, and they hate him, and I know that Cybermen are a “big thing”, but I will die on the hill that the Daleks are his one true nemesis.  He (at this point) killed the timelords to get rid of them, and yet they survived.  All his sacrifice for nothing.  The way they’re so desperately trying to save Station 5, even though it’s done nothing but evil to the human race (of course they’re also trying to save humanity, but yk).   And Rose still believes that the Doctor will win, because he always wins, and she doesn’t believe that Jack will die, or that she will, not until she’s in the TARDIS and she sees the hologram.  She believes in him so much, and it hurts. The way the Doctor just slumps in defeat when he sees the Delta wave calculations, because he knows that he can save Rose, but it means he’ll never seen her again.  And he does it, of course he does it, because a world with Rose alive and him dead is better than a world with both of them dead or him alive and her dead. The fact that Mickey helps Rose try and go back, even though he knows she’ll probably die, because there’s no stopping her, and because he respects her decision, and ultimately, because what Rose said in the diner was right.  The Doctor showed them both a better way of living, and for that reason, Mickey winds up fighting aliens with Martha Jones down the line.  Rose being BadWolf and sending the message for herself always kills me, because I loved fucked up cyclical paradox shit like that. (It’s a paradox kind of because she had to have sent the message in order to send the message.  So it’s a chicken-or-the-egg type thing.) The Doctor is torn between heartbreak and fear when he sees Rose as BadWolf.  Cause he knows there’s no way this can end well.  He’s sad that she’s done this, that it might kill her, and he’s also terrified of her.  She can play God, and while the Doctor might play God sometimes too, he isn’t a god.  He’s a man, and there’s Rose bringing a person back to life (yay, jack!!!) and breaking things down to dust with a look.

Speaking of the Doctor playing God, when the Daleks ask him if he’s a killer or a coward, and he says “coward, any day.”  He tries so hard to push that button.  There’s a large portion of him that wants to kill the Daleks, no matter the cost.  So that the Time Lords didn’t die in vain.  But he can’t do it.  He physically can’t do it, and that’s why he’s the Doctor.  (See Moffat quote about him having two hearts, a phone box, and a screwdriver.)

Also, the fact that he kisses Rose and that 1) she doesn’t remember it, and 2) he did it to save her life.... thoughts are being thunk.  And I never thought I would say this, but Ten just felt... wrong.  Like, in that moment, there with Rose, in Nine’s clothes, Ten didn’t belong.

I think that Nine will always be Rose’s Doctor.  Yes, she spends time with Ten, and she grows to care about Ten as well, but there’s something special about Nine and Rose.  To me, at least.  And maybe my mind will change when I get through Season 2, but I still associate Ten more with Martha and Donna (especially Donna) than I do with Rose.

adhd father brown hcs??? sign me tf up!

Okay, so I’ve had most of these thoughts/interpretations for awhile but I was not expecting to morph into such a ginormous post

A few caveats before we begin.

1) Obviously due to the period drama setting, Father Brown would likely never be officially diagnosed as having ADHD, as the disorder as we know it today only started to be seriously studied in the 1970s.  Furthermore as I mentioned before, I head canon him as having either the “primarily inattentive” (what used to be called/separately diagnosed as ADD) or the “combined”  subtype of ADHD , which  statistically  fly under the radar more  than those with more “hyperactive” symptoms. 

2) I don’t think he is intentionally written and/or performed as ADHD-coded and I don’t expect canon will ever  “confirm this.” A LOT of character types/ tropes in fiction have developed around characters that display neurodiverse  symptoms that may not be immediately obvious to neurotypical content producers or consumers. In particular the “brilliant-but-lazy” and/or “charmingly eccentric” character shows up frequently in detective fiction.  (Other examples: Hercule Poirot is pretty regularly interpreted as having OCD and Sherlock Holmes as having ADHD and/or autism spectrum disorder). 

3) There’s a bit of discourse about the word “neurodiverse” and who should be “allowed” to claim it. Some people consider it a term that should be exclusively used to describe  people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, most experts believe that “neurodiversity” encompasses a much wider umbrella that also includes ADHD, OCD, Tourettes/tics, dyslexia, PTSD, various sensory and processing disorders, and more in addition to ASD. 

For the purpose of this, we will be using the word in the broader, more inclusive sense that includes ADHD and other similar disorders.  We will also be using terms such as “special interest,” “hyperfixation,” “comfort object,”  “stim/stimming” , etc that are more commonly associated with ASD--but that are also present in many individuals with ADHD. 

Now to the main event. (below the cut because it’s really long.) Also feel free to comment or add to this post.

Father Brown & ADHD (head canons, symptoms, and interpretations)

He is absent-minded and easily distracted, especially when it comes to mundane day-to-day tasks.  I can’t even begin to count the number of times Mrs. M has to remind him to eat, sleep, clean, have something repaired,  and/or do paperwork And it’s pretty strongly implied that the squad’s interventions (and especially Mrs. M) are just about the only thing keeping him on task.

Special mention has to go to the time where he just straight-up LEFT MASS in the middle of his homily, because he’d suddenly thought of a potential lead for the case and needed to investigate it immediately.  (”The Jackdaw’s Revenge”)

Another special mention has to go to the sizable pile of overdue library books that he’s supposedly “been meaning to take back for ages” but kept forgetting. In this same scene, Mrs. M specifically refers to him as a “hoarder.”  (“The Lepidopterist's Companion”)

He is fairly observant when hyperfocusing and tends to notice details and inconsistencies that others might not. He’s also very good at making surprising and unexpected “bigger picture” connections. He’s also more likely to consider multiple possible theories at once rather than focusing on the most likely, obvious one (as the inspectors do). 

His permanent special interests are mysteries and theology. Interestingly, his theology interest extends beyond Christianity/Catholicism--as he is also very knowledgeable and curious about several other religions/denominations/ways of practicing faith, as well as atheism and more generalized spirituality. He was even willing to give Kalon’s “so -obviously-a-cult-and-not-even-a-cool-one” organization a fair shake at first. 

In addition to his permanent special interests, he is also very curious in general about a lot of  different things and will often develop brief-but-strong interests in something pertaining to the case of the week. 

He stims primarily by riding his bike everywhere. The fact he loves his bike enough to name it (”Bucephalus” after Alexander the Great’s horse) suggests that it may also be a comfort object for him.

His other major stims are eating (more about that later) and touching his umbrella.

Speaking of his umbrella, a decent case could be made for it as a comfort object.” Father Brown takes it with him whenever he needs to leave St. Mary’s/the presbytery, even on occasions where he’s unlikely to encounter rain. The few times he is separated from his umbrella we are meant to see this a really big deal.  His lending Flambeau his umbrella in “The Judgement of Man” is presented as a gesture of true kindness and friendship. When Father B. is forced to leave his umbrella behind in “The Whistle in the Dark,” Bunty immediately buys him a new one. 

His two biggest vices are his tendency to overeat (especially his love for sweet things) and his interest in listening to the horse races. Fortunately, neither of these things has become a big problem as of yet (especially as he’s content to listen to the races without betting on them and has Mrs. M to stop him from eating too much sugary treats). However, it is worth noting that people with ADHD are especially susceptible to overeating,  gambling, and other addiction problems, as they are constantly seeking stimulation.

His relationship with Rejection Sensitivity is  somewhat unique. Because he has such a strong support system, he seems to handle personal rejection fairly well. However, his RSD  still manifests in terms of redeeming others. He seems to hold himself personally accountable for every soul he is unable to save.  This may explain why he is so tenacious when trying to getting people to confess and repent their wrongdoing. We see this particularly strongly with Katharine Corven (which was always a lost cause) and with Flambeau (who he’s had much more success). 

Father Brown  quickly forms strong bonds with other characters who are canonically identified as being neurodivergent.  Examples of this include: Lucia Galloway (dyslexia) from “The Face of Death,”  Jeremy (brain alterations  due to a childhood automobile accident)  and Sarah Mulgrew (ambiguous disorder but shows possible signs of PTSD and autism )  from “The Maddest of All,” and Arthur Malmont (ambiguous disorder but possibly autism and/or another developmental disorder) from “The Labyrinth of the Minotaur.” 

In “The Maddest of All,” Father Brown is admitted to a mental institution as he is showing signs of “impulse-control disorder.” While he is largely exaggerating his symptoms so that he can be admitted and investigate, it makes sense for him to simply exaggerate symptoms and tendencies that already exist rather than completely “fake” a different type of disorder entirely. During his evaluation with the doctor, he even admits to overeating and kleptomanic tendencies--both habits  that Fr. Brown partakes on a fairly regular basis even when he isn’t “faking.” (Granted the kleptomania is usually just clues for a case or deserts left unattended, but it’s still worth commenting on).

every target novelisation....2!

planet of giants by terrance dicks ok so i think that the reason that this is...good, and an unearthly child was...not good, is because this was written 9 years later when like. other, non-terrance dicks people were also novelising stories and he wasn’t just grinding them out on an industrial level. planet of giants isn’t one of the greats of doctor who but this is a competent adaptation - it doesn’t add much but it does flesh out what’s already there, giving us some backstory elements and making the appearance of giant insects and bodies seem a bit more dramatic than they could manage in 1964. unfortunately it also alters my favourite line from the story (‘i don't know how you know, you're supposed to know!’) and the doctor is weirdly hostile at the beginning (he’s looking forward to ditching ian and barbara, he responds to barbara’s observation ‘drily’ like he’s being a bit sarcastic over her, um, *checks notes* noticing important details). also, dicks describes this in the opening as ‘the doctor’s most grotesque and terrifying adventure’ and i’m like...planet of giants? really??

doctor who and the dalek invasion of earth by terrance dicks ok this one legitimately doesn’t change much at all. it cuts down on some things (including the doctor’s end speech being shorter - i’m assuming that’s a space thing), fleshes out on pov bits as you can in prose, gets rid of the smacked bottom line. bizarrely there are a few times that susan calls her grandfather the doctor which...i’m pretty sure wasn’t there originally. aside from all those small details, yeah it’s basically the same, but it’s well adapted for prose (i genuinely think it stands as a novel in its own right), and depending on your reading speed it might actually be a nice, shorter alternative to the television version - it was around 45 minutes less time for me. some general things i wanted to comment on: the resistance is explicitly shown as kinda gender segregated (exclusively women are preparing food when we first see it) which irritated me; the description of parliament as a symbol of ‘human progress and tradition’ reminded me of blood harvest having the lords/commons system as the Ideal Form Of Government, in terms of how terrance dicks thinks (this may only interest me? idk i very probably spend too much time thinking about the political views of this particular dead dr who script editor); there’s a use of holocaust here that’s technically accurate to what the word literally means but it felt weird to me to use it.

the rescue by ian marter oh man i’ve been busy and this took me aages to read. it kinda...diverges increasingly from the original story as it goes on. we’ve got some scenes with the seeker crew (incidentally one of them says ‘ass’ and i was like???hello???you’re allowed to do that in a dr who book from 1987???), and then most of the expanded stuff is in the climax. dr who and bennett have a full on brawl! ian, barbara and vicki visit a destroyed didoi city on their way back to the tardis! mysterious silver figures! a giant worm encounter! incidentally, this does have way more of a downer ending than the original because it’s strongly implied that the last two of the didoi were killed by seeker crewmembers who fired in a panic, after which the report that forms the epilogue ends with “goodwill to all persons” to give us a taste of bitter irony. so that’s kinda grim. um...there’s actually a lot of little changes and minor expansions to this one as well so off the top of my head: we learn more about why vicki left earth (global warming :/), sandy is a lot more threatening-looking than on screen, the crashed ship gets its name changed to astra-nine, ian and barbara hold hands briefly, barbara’s fall really leaves her beaten up. i like the seeker crew comparing the tardis briefly passing them to various non-police box objects from the future (although the link to china is a bit eastern world=alien association for my tastes), dr who telling vicki ‘give that pretty face a wipe’ is clearly him attempting to cheer her up and it’s not meant to be weird but i found it weird. finally, i’ve gotta say i appreciate ian marter’s commitment to ‘mildly unsettling’ in his descriptions of tardis materialisations. this was the last novelisation he wrote before his death (the book’s dedicated to him) and mild criticisms aside, i do think he’s a good writer and he brings an interestingly different angle to the series. 

the romans by donald cotton oh my god. how do i even start this. i’m not even going to try cataloguing all the changes because this isn’t even close to a straight adaptation. it’s told in the form of various documents collected by tacitus - the doctor’s diary, ian’s journal that he keeps to prove to the headmaster at coal hill that he and barbara haven’t just eloped (i’m not joking, this is the textual reason for it), an assassin’s letters home to his mum, nero’s scribblings, and various other little details. vicki and barbara get less attention than on screen because we don’t see much from their perspective (vicki unfortunately doesn’t even get to chase the assassin out, she just screams in this), and the nero assassination plot is exclusively confined to being mentioned in the epilogue. it’s also a lot broader, or at least consistently broader, which means that ian’s side of things is treated a lot more lightly (which i was personally fine with) but also that we still get nero’s predatory behaviour being played for laughs. there’s also a few comments about women early on that i was unhappy with, and use of fat as an insult. generally, though, i thought this was great! there were a lot of things that i don’t have space or time to include here but i really liked. i guess i’d consider this as a companion piece to the tv version rather than a replacement, which some of these do basically serve as. they tell the same basic story, but they’re so different in a lot of ways that i think it’s worth looking at both. i just checked my notes and remembered this so content warning: poppea sabina’s first section references suicide.

doctor who and the zarbi by bill strutton ok so i think the web planet is boring. i don’t know completely why, i don’t think it’s any one thing, it has some interesting ideas, but it is! it’s fucking boring! anyway, we have a bit more casual sexism in the novel, we’re missing that fun convo about aspirin between vicki and barbara, but really i don’t think it adds or changes much - like even the chapters correspond pretty much exactly to the tv cliffhangers. i guess it’s competently written prose-wise, but i genuinely can’t get over my conviction that this story is boring. am i being unfair? maybe! i like some of the early atmosphere, though, and i appreciate a book which refers to ‘the ship tardis’ (lowercase) and ‘doctor who’ throughout the entire thing. oh yeah, and i encourage you all to look up the illustrations for this. i don’t know who that woman is but she’s definitely not vicki.

doctor who and the crusaders by david whitaker ah yes, the infamous ‘susan married david cameron’ novelisation. tbh i don’t like the crusades and this has the same problems - i don’t care about the english, el akir is every orientalist stereotype whitaker could possibly cram into one man, and That’s Not How A Harem Works. do i think it’s the most egregiously racist doctor who story of all time? probably not! it certainly has sympathetic arabic characters too. but i prefer most other historicals, at least. however, if that isn’t you, i’m sure you’ll get something out of this. there aren’t any particularly extreme changes to the plot structure, although it’s missing some later scenes at the english court, but it’s well written and probably if you like the original you’ll enjoy it more than i did. there’s some dated language surrounding black characters, though, i’m not a fan of the whole ‘we aren’t so different’ speech ian has (because it rests on ‘we all believe in a higher power’ which uh. i don’t. guess that means i’m not ‘civilised’. also generally i don’t like the argument that we should respect each other because of what we have in common - you should respect other people whatever!), and the prologue at the beginning where they muse on history and destiny assumes that the english invaders and the arabs are both equally right in their own ways (the doctor outright says this!)

the space museum by glyn jones so, i really like the space museum. mainly for vicki’s revolutionary fervour, but there are other reasons too. however, i don’t think that this really adds enough to be of interest - although we do get some information about the two alien species’ biology, and a bonus explanation of why everyone speaks english (the moroks briefly considered invading earth so programmed some earth languages into their translation system). there’s a bit more wandering around the museum, some minor tweaks and expansions in other areas, an underground tunnel scene where we learn a bit of the planet’s backstory...ian and the doctor are very snippy to each other in this, which i find funny. oh yeah, and there’s a bizarrely meta bit where ian comments on poor dialogue? basically, this is a book i enjoyed, but really it just makes me want to watch the space museum instead of reading it. just a heads up, there’s a character who briefly considers suicide to get out of his bosses being angry with him. 

the chase by john peel ok before i get started i need to establish that the cover for this one slaps. anyway, i don’t respect john peel at all but this was...alright? doesn’t expand much plotwise (although i suspect both the sand monsters at the beginning and the plants at the end have slightly more to do) but we get a fair bit of pov stuff. unfortunately lacking ian’s dad dancing and hi-fi the panda, the marie celeste bit is no longer played for comedy (barbara angsts over it) and even though the two paragraphs dragging morton dill are kinda funny i’m not sure how i feel about him being committed for claiming he saw daleks. ian and barbara’s departure plays out a little differently. steven is blond for some reason. we learn as well that daleks are charged by solar panels (at least they’re pro-green energy??)

the time meddler by nigel robinson pretty competent, straight down the middle novelisation, although that is tempered by inserting some weird sexist bits for steven and also lowkey being nostalgic for 11th century england at a few points? it’s also a bit more violent than we see on tv, and if anything the rape is more loudly implied, so heads up. other than that, there are a few minor embellishments (we’re explicitly told the dr and monk recognise each other, vicki tells steven that the tardis is important to her because it’s her home, a few differences between the monk’s tardis and the doctor’s are described, vicki views steven following her as a triumphant victory in their power struggle which i personally find funny), and there’s a prologue (recapping steven’s arrival in the tardis) and an epilogue (which delays the monk’s discovery of the broken tardis because he walks to hastings first to try and get involved there). i had fun, but it’s not a must read.

Himawari - Chapter 4

Chapter 4 of a Kimetsu no Yaiba-verse AU

“This place really stinks, sensei. Can we please get out of here already!”

Kakashi, Iruka and Naruto stood before a small wisteria grove. To Kakashi’s surprise, Iruka had been the one to suggest this little detour. Perhaps their conversation last week had sparked some sense of urgency.

He glanced at the boy who was pinching his nose, whining while tugging on his guardian’s sleeve. The fact that Naruto’s only reaction for now was just plain annoyance and disgust bode well for them.

He’d seen Kushina have a much stronger reaction in the presence of these flowers, and that was before the morning sickness had kicked in. Minato had to carry her out on his back that night.

He turned his attention to Iruka, who was looking decidedly relieved. He placed a hand on Naruto’s head, ruffling his hair apologetically. “Sorry, Naruto. I’ll need a few minutes, you can stand further away with Kakashi-san if you want.” Kakashi had to stifle a chuckle when the boy merely side-eyed him before turning back and stating “I’m gonna wait here, but hurry up!”

So Iruka did. Swiftly, he made his way up one of the smaller trees. Using a kunai, he started gathering some of the wisteria blossoms into a pouch he’d brought along. It wasn’t long before he was standing in front of Naruto again.

“How are you feeling? I need you to tell me if you feel anything unusual, ok?”

“I’m fine! What I don’t get is how you two can stand the smell of this stuff.”

With his own heightened sense of smell, Kakashi could relate, if only a little. He certainly didn’t find the same grievances with it that Naruto did. The fragrance of the Wisteria could be overwhelming, but for any slayer, it was a smell associated only with safety and relief.

“Let’s get going then.” Iruka led the way to the seal they’d used to enter this grove, carved into the trunk of an ancient tree.

“They perform the same function as paper seals, but the ground’s energy keeps these ones active indefinitely, at least until they’re destroyed by force.” He had explained one afternoon. Kakashi had seen the map on one of Iruka’s more obliging days. Like the facets of a skilfully cut jewel, the locations of seals placed throughout the bounded field surrounding the school, for entry and escape.

It allowed them to cover a remarkable distance in a short time, but anyone caught in the labyrinth would be driven mad with disorientation.

He didn’t want to imagine the amount of work it had taken to build the routes.

It was also probably a good thing that the school had been set up in what was colloquially known as “The Forest of Death”. Demons were not the only things humans had to be wary of. Kakashi had been lucky not to run into the more monstrous residents so far, but that did not mean he was deaf to the bellows and howls that reached his ears from time to time.

Even the children were familiar with the dangers that lurked outside the walls. He’d heard Naruto regale his classmates with the account of the monster chicken that had broken into his room and tore up Iruka’s bed with its sickle-like claws one night. Apparently Iruka had been feeling particularly merciful that day, and allowed it to escape with its life barely intact.

The threesome soon found themselves out of the grove much to Naruto’s relief. He busied himself by comically sucking in more palatable air, while Iruka scanned their surroundings.

“We’ve got some distance to cover before we get to town, but this will help.” He retrieved a paper seal from the sleeve of his sea-blue haori, and placed it on the trunk of another large tree. Stepping close, he laid a single finger in the middle before closing his eyes, eyebrows knitted close in concentration, lips moving in a silent incantation. Ink-like tendrils began to emerge from the spot under his finger, and soon the paper was marked.

“Would I be able to do that?”

If Iruka was surprised at all, he did a good job of hiding it. Kakashi had moved up just beside him for a better view.

“I’m not sure how much of an advantage this would be in a fight, Kakashi-san.” He’d let out a little cough to distract from his reddening face. “If you don’t have a clear picture of your destination when you do this, the results could be...unfortunate.”

“You sound like you know this from experience.” Kakashi teased.

“One doesn’t learn before failing a few times.” The teacher dead-panned. “It’s also why we never base an exit point on the ground.”

Oh...that would certainly be unfortunate.

Having wrongly assumed Kakashi’s curiosity was satiated (or having chosen to ignore it altogether), Iruka turned his attention to the boy behind them.

“Naruto! We’re going!”

“Hey, don’t leave me behind!” He cried, running up to them.

Iruka smiled fondly, and offered a hand to the boy, who grabbed it without hesitation. He then turned to Kakashi, offering the same. Naruto’s expression soured immediately, which he found endlessly amusing.

“We need to be in contact when we go through, sorry, Kakashi-san.”

“Oh sensei, I thought you’d never ask.” Kakashi beamed, placing his hand atop Iruka’s before squeezing it gently. It prompted a flush and a wave of indignant noises, just as planned.

“Try not to let go unless you don’t mind losing a limb or two.”

Kakashi felt the warm hand grasp his just a bit tighter as they stepped forward.

It took two more hours of travelling before they finally reached their destination, a bustling town near one of the major cross roads leading to the capital city. Naruto’s eyes wandered, taking in the sheer amount of people with a sense of awe. Iruka led them through a few market streets before stopping in front of a building that smelled strongly of medicinal herbs. Kakashi knew it as one housing a slayer-affiliated apothecary.

“Naruto and I will be here for a while, feel free to take a walk.”

“I gotta go in too?” Naruto asked. Iruka merely nodded, and motioned him through the curtains.

It was just after midday and the town was abuzz with activity. His nose twitched at the smell of grilled fish, but Kakashi decided to wait till the pair were done before suggesting they break for lunch. He continued down the street, stopping to pick up some dried meat for the pack.

“Hey mister! We got some lovely glass from the Uzumaki islands, beautiful pieces! If you’re looking for something for the lady here, there’s plenty to pick from!” Across the street, a vendor was entertaining a young couple who had stopped to admire his wares. Kakashi ambled past, but not before taking a quick glance at the goods before moving on.

By the time he made it back to where he left his companions, Naruto was sitting on a bench in front of the building, swinging his legs while watching the people walk by. Kakashi took a seat beside him, expecting some kind of protest in response, but found none. Now that he looked closer, the boy was looking unusually glum.

“Iruka still inside?”

“Yeah…hey, Kakashi-sensei.”

He raised an eyebrow at that. Usually it was something more like “Bakashi-sensei” or “Karashi-sensei”.

“Hmm?”

“Everyone at school thinks I’m sick, but I feel totally fine. Is there something wrong with me?”

“Not as far as I can see. But I haven’t known you very long have I?”

“I guess…” Naruto paused and looked to the entrance of the building.

Kakashi sensed the boy’s unease. Even though he kept it to himself, Iruka was obviously weighing heavily on his mind. The boy must have seen the state of Iruka’s health throughout the years, children were surprisingly observant when they wanted to be.

The Hashira had been unceremoniously shaken awake from his morning nap by the teacher, informing him they’d be dropping into town today. At the gate, Izumo had jokingly asked for a souvenir on their way back from Naruto’s visit to the doctor. It seemed these trips were routine. It wasn’t difficult to guess for whom these trips were actually for.

“If I was as strong as you, he wouldn’t have to worry so much.”

“You’re doing just fine, Naruto.” He really was. Today’s showing at the wisteria grove wasn’t just to Iruka’s relief.

Naruto didn’t say anything, but leapt to his feet when Iruka, looking a little worn, stepped out of the curtains, his bag looking a little fuller than when they came.

“The boy is perfectly healthy. It’s you I’m worried about. Take care of yourself, Iruka-kun.” It was soft; an aged voice tinged with worry. Kakashi barely caught it all.

Iruka turned around to bow gratefully, thanking the proprietor before joining the pair waiting for him.

“Sorry to have kept you waiting.”

“Iruka-nii, are you okay?”

“Naruto...I told you to call me ‘sensei’ in public didn’t I?”

“What does it matter? There’s no one else around!”

Iruka ruffled his hair with a sigh. He couldn’t even pretend to be upset, not with that smile on his face.

“You guys must be hungry. Let’s get something to eat.”

Iruka looked at Kakashi and beamed. It made something in his stomach do a flip. Having spent nearly a month with the teacher, and having been on the receiving end of a whole repertoire of these, Kakashi knew this smile in particular meant trouble for him.

“Naruto, because you did so well today, Kakashi-san’s treating us to ramen!”

What? Said who?

“Ramen?! Really?” The boy was now looking at him with a disturbingly starry-eyed gaze.

Sigh.

He still hadn’t let the bed thing go? They’d already spent an afternoon sewing that thing back together. Iruka could be so petty sometimes.

“Yeeaaah. I am.”  

Kakashi couldn’t pretend to be annoyed, not with that look on Iruka’s face.

The smell of boiling soup stock and roasting meat had reached Kakashi’s nose far earlier than he’d seen the noodle stand. Ramen was a heavier meal than he would have liked in this weather, but if the two with him were going to be so excited about it, he wasn’t going to say anything. It did smell very good.

“Oh! If it ain’t Iruka and Naruto!” An obviously fond voice bellowed from behind the counter.

“Welcome back sensei! It’s been a while!”

“Teuchi-san, Ayame-san, we’re back!” Iruka returned, with just as much enthusiasm.

There were only three empty seats at the counter, and Naruto had placed himself squarely in the middle. Kakashi couldn’t help but roll his eyes when Naruto stuck his tongue out at him before settling in this seat.

Iruka gave Kakashi a quick introduction before ordering for the three. Soon enough, they had heaping bowls of piping hot noodles placed in front of them. Out of the corner of his eye, Kakashi spied Naruto staring at him with an expectant look. He yelped in surprise when Iruka flicked his head in admonishment.

“Manners, Naruto.” That was all he said before placing his palms together.

The three said their thanks for the meal, and dug in.

“Looks like rain, Kakashi-san. We best hurry back while there’s light out.”

It was late afternoon by the time they reached the entry point of the bounded field, and the dark clouds that they’d seen on the horizon had moved to greet them. They’d just passed the third barrier, and now they stood at the remains of what was probably once a large pine. All that was left was a broken, blackened stump.

“This is bad. This one’s been destroyed.”

“What could have done it?” Kakashi asked.

“It’s hard to say. Could be monsters, could be lightning. It’s a recent one too. Nobody’s reported it yet. We have to use another route.”

The crack of thunder that followed was ominous, made worse by the wave of rain that descended upon them. Iruka wasted no time in activating another paper seal, and soon they found themselves taking shelter in a cave overlooking a gushing, swelling ravine.

“Iruka-nii?” It was soft, but Naruto’s voice echoed, bouncing off the walls and into the darkness. Kakashi didn’t know how deep the cave system was, but if he had any luck at all, he wouldn’t have to find out. The smell wafting from the depths didn’t sit well with him.

He was distracted from his thoughts when his ears picked up the sound of laboured breathing.

The teacher was leaning against the wall, a hand braced to prop himself up. Kakashi could only see his back, but he recognised the struggle for what it was. He barely made it to him before Iruka crumpled into a heap against his chest.

“Iruka-sensei!”

A struggle for breath, followed by a series of chest-wracking coughs. Kakashi placed a hand to his forehead; a little warm, but not to the point of a fever, not yet. Naruto was crouched beside them, worry plastered on his small face.

“Overdoing it as usual, Iruka.” Kakashi sighed. Removing his haori, he folded it up and placed it under his head.

“Sorry.” It was all he could manage in between breaths.

Covering these large distances with two people in tow. It couldn’t have been easy.

It took a few more minutes before Iruka spoke again, raising a hand to brush Naruto’s cheek.

“I’m fine, Naruto. Sorry for scaring you. These seals take up quite a bit of energy.” He tried his best to steady his voice, but came up short. Naruto’s expression said he wasn’t quite satisfied with the explanation, but he kept silent, merely nodding.

“We can’t afford to wait here too long, Iruka-sensei. I could carry you, but I don’t think either of us would prefer that.” Kakashi drawled, leaning over just enough to make eye contact with the invalid, eyebrows wiggling for added effect.The slayer looked up at him with a painfully annoyed stare. Beside him, Naruto was attempting to dig his elbow into his ribs.

“The next barrier isn’t far. Give me half an hour...some water, and we’ll be...back in time for dinner.” He was struggling by the last phrase, and that made it a little less convincing than it normally would have been.

“Naruto finished the last of it, I’m afraid.”

“I’ll go get it!”

“Not happening. You’ll be watching Iruka-sensei.”

Kakashi stood up and headed for the mouth of the cave. Thankfully, the rain outside seemed to have let up.

“Be careful.”

“Yeah yeah.”

“One “yeah” is sufficient, Kakashi-san.” A true teacher-line if he’d ever heard one, but one that felt a little odd coming from one as young as Iruka. Well, if he was well enough to joke around, it could only be a good thing.

“Take care of him, Naruto.”

“You don’t have to tell me!”

Kakashi realised that his luck probably ran out a long, long, time ago.

Coming back to an empty cave, with only the haori he left behind and Iruka’s pack there to greet him was a grim reminder.

If he listened closely, he could hear the last echoes of Naruto’s screams of outrage.

Preparing to descend into the waiting abyss, Kakashi let out a deep sigh.

Should have just carried Iruka back after all.

Ripper!AU Characters

A while back the ever talented @donc-desole drew some great art of their Bloodborne Ripper!AU, and I fell in love with it instantly. I’ve been slowly working out a story and background for this AU since then. These character summaries were one of the first things I started writing and have added to and kept up to date as the story develops. Most of these folks are tertiary and some may not even have a role in the story by the time I’m done, but I wanted to figure out how most of the NPCs fit into this universe.

Also, if you’re a fan Des’ OCs as well you’ll notice a certain doctor’s name. ;)

Alfred - An up-and-comer that’s relatively new to Yharnam. Gentleman,  academic theologian, fleeting soldier, amateur pugilist, literal lady killer. He’s currently working on his dissertation to complete his theology doctorate after an extensive, years-long mentorship that equated an education up to that point. It’s slow going given his preoccupation with stalking about in the dead of night, but he persists; for his own fervid pursuit, as well as to follow-through on the wishes of his late mentor and benefactor. The reproachful scholars at Byrgenwerth University are particularly interested in his enigmatic past - a topic he’s all too happy to leave be. He’s taken strongly to one of Yharnam’s aristocracy, much to her vexation. And fear of mutilation.

Annalise Cainhurst - A life-long resident of New Pthumeria and one of its few remaining that can truly claim to be of noble blood. She holds an unknown amount of power in Yharnam’s activities, and may have been involved in the politics of the recent civil war. In fact very few seem to know what it she does, though everyone seems to know not to mess with the sole heiress of the Cainhurst nobles - other than Alfred that is. When not pulling strings, she’s taken to writing articles in the local paper under a pseudonym, and is quite popular with cult naysayers. The higher echelons of the local Church of Healing cult apparently despise her; maybe something to do with her pastime? Or perhaps her evident immortality?

Percival Hewlett- A doctor that practices in Yharnam, and likely Alfred’s only real, albeit begrudging friend. A rather eccentric and introverted man that was a respectable medical practitioner long before his move to the city. Stories of Byrgenwerth University’s ventures into the medical frontier proved tantalizing enough that he left his established practice in London, thus leaving behind his own share of secrets. Like most of Yharnam’s foreign doctors he’s had to take up a position in the local cult - however, like most of said doctors, he sees it simply as a means of gaining access to the Church's resources. Alfred trusts him fully, and in turn Percy has taken to minding his more self-destructive habits - or perhaps more accurately, taken an interest in studying him.

Siegward - Alfred’s beloved canine companion. An English mastiff pampered to the utmost degree and treated better than Alfred treats himself at times. Despite multiple outings every day he still carries more bulk than any other dog in Yharnam. While under his mentor’s tutelage, Alfred saved him from an irate nobleman whose prized bitch was bred with the wrong male, Sig being a part of that litter. Since then he’s been the closest companion Alfred’s ever had, thus his rather extreme protectiveness of the animal. Red meat is often a part of this dog’s diet, despite his master’s lack of visits to any local butchers…

Iosefka - A New Pthumerian doctor who was one of very few allowed by the Church to travel beyond the country's borders before they were opened to the outside world. During her time spent abroad she happened to meet Percy Hewlett - he was one of but a handful in England that took her completely seriously as a medical practitioner, not only because she's a woman but also her "unconventional" practices. His acceptance and their shared research interests quickly forged a friendship that has lasted since. It's Iosefka's clinic and row house that Percy rents, and her good word that continues to ease tensions between he and other Church members. The two meet from time to time for tea and a chat, usually about their studies or more annoying compatriots.

Djura - The man every dog-loving Yharnamite knows - or hates, in Alfred’s case. The seemingly homeless, one-eyed native veteran earns his keep around town as both a dog walker and sitter, whether it’s requested or not. Many of the pooches he looks after never quite make it back to living with their owners, yet oddly most don’t seem to have a problem with that; the  man takes care of every dog he “shelters” as if it were his own flesh and blood. He’s taken up residence in one of the larger empty buildings of Old Yharnam, same as where he keeps his multitude of kennels. An overall helpful and well-known old coot, he seems to be more knowledgeable than he lets on, in a number of areas.

Eileen, aka the Crow - Nothing much is known about the woman other than this: she acts only at night, kills those that deserve it, and has never once been caught. A vigilante of sorts, she’s taken it upon herself to erase those that aid the ever growing crime-rate in Yharnam. Thus far only murderers, abusers, kidnappers, and similar ilk have been targeted, so many Yharnamites are content to let her go about her business. Alfred, on the other hand, has had to be very careful during his night time escapades. Annalise has also had to deal with the Crow’s snooping - or at least her cousin has…

The Crow of Cainhurst - A mysterious man that Alfred has never seen unmasked, he's apparently a “distant relative” or “cousin” of Annalise. He comes and goes silently from her manor seemingly as he sees fit, though nearly always converses with her before leaving. As it is, he likely carries out his mistress’s more unsavory dealings and orders. He has no quarrels with sharing his disgust and mistrust of Alfred’s attempted courtship of Annalise, earning him Alfred’s utter disdain. Neither ever dare to raise a finger against the other however, as the noblewoman all but demanded they play nice. The only association he has to the other Crow in Yharnam is a bitter and historied rivalry. 

Gascoigne - A retired clergyman and soldier that assists at the Healing Church chapel near his family’s home. Many believe him to be in some official capacity since he’s so often seen there, but really he’s the groundskeeper more than anything. He left the clergy long ago -  originally in New Pthumeria as a missionary, he joined the civil war effort and eventually found himself in the same regiment as Henryk. He was forced into retirement due to injuries from some sort of "beast," leaving him scarred and with sensitive vision. He’d met his wife while still a clergyman, marrying only after he’d returned from the front. His two daughters are adopted, and he’s as fiercely protective of them as any true father would be. He and Alfred are far from friendly, mostly due to Gascoigne’s seemingly unfounded suspicions of the man.

Viola - Gascoigne’s wife and mother to their adopted daughters. She met her husband while working as a nurse during the civil war, and tended to him when gravely injured. One of few women in Yharnam that Alfred both personally knows and holds in high regards - and so receives his particular brand of chivalry. She’s a gentle woman, kind to all but just as firm in what she deems needed and appropriate. She’s become fond of Alfred with how kindly he treats her youngest, despite his peculiarities and her husband’s distrust. He seems in need of a motherly figure in his life, and so long as he continues to be a gentleman toward her and her girls, she’s more than willing to be just that; regardless of her husband’s overbearing wariness.

Eleanor & Madeline - Gascoigne and Viola’s adopted daughters. Their biological parents were victims of the civil war, and were known by both Gascoigne and Viola before their demise. Eleanor, the eldest, was old enough to remember some of what happened, while Madeline was just a babe at the time. Ellie is more reserved when it comes to interactions and letting people near. Maddie, on the other hand, can find a friend in even the most peculiar of people - Alfred, for instance. She is an avid artist-in-the-making, drawing with her chalks on the family’s front walk as her father tends to chores, while her older sister enjoys receiving piano and singing lessons from their mother. They are both very fond of dogs, for whatever reason.

Henryk - A veteran soldier and altogether mysterious older man. He is close friends with Gascoigne from his time looking out for the younger man during the war, and considers Viola and the girls his family just as much as they do him. He can occasionally be seen having a drink in a certain tavern outside of Yharnam. Other than that the man is an enigma - he comes and goes often, sometimes gone for weeks at a time. What he does with the bulk of his time in his later years is known by very few, and he seems content to leave it as such. Alfred finds him rather unsettling, more than he’s willing to admit.

Constable Valtr - A Swedish constable from a village deep in the forest that flanks Yharnam, Alfred’s only met him off the clock with drink in hand. He’s a jovial sort with an adamant personality and unwavering resolve when it comes to disbursing justice - or so his comrades have said; frankly Alfred is just fine with never having to find out firsthand. Some of the men at the tavern he frequents defer to him regularly or let him speak for them altogether, making it obvious he’s a leader of sorts among them, beyond his position as a man of the law. Even old Henryk treats him with a good deal of respect.

The Madaras Twins & Yamamura - Three men that are almost always with the Constable at their favored tavern. The young Twins run a butcher shop, but don’t seem much more than local thugs, brutish and loud in their revelry.  I have been looking forward to writing this post for a very long time, since “[t]hreatened by the normative that cannot offer an alternative to linear history, I never had the luxury of not supporting my own thesis with evidence.”[1] This speculative piece of anti-standard academism for four front paws and at least two voices will actually be a cherry picking of sensorial and intellectual stimuli that washed over me in the last eight months in Istanbul. I will keep the footnotes and references, however, since I always want to say more than what can fit on a regular page.

Plague

While the Great Plague was tightening its grip on London in 1665, and the rich were fleeing the city head on, the city authorities ordered the human population to kill all the domestic animals whose movements could not be easily restrained, since it was thought that pigs, dogs, and cats were spreading the disease. Ultimately, the historians evaluate the number of human victims to be around 100,000, while the number of feline ones goes up to 200,000.[2] We can speculate about the possibility of fewer people dying had they not been ordered to kill the biggest predator of rats, creatures carrying the fleas that the bacteria used to travel around. The human corpses were being identified and counted by plague-searchers—mostly under-privileged women, paid per dead body.

“The female mind is still more subject to these delusions of disordered fancy… Their bosoms are much more susceptible of the injurious influence of seclusion, the contagion of example, and to dangers of illusion.” Thus wrote an eighteenth-century Swiss physician, before presenting the example of a medieval (!) French nunnery, where all the inmates “caught” a mania of meowing individually and collectively for hours on end.[3] This loosely referenced example is still taken as one of the first recorded cases of mass hysteria. The two months of COVID-19 lockdown in ANAMED lead me to doubt Dr. Zimmerman’s conclusions. Namely, none of the four female fellows secluded with me took up my own habit of purring when content and embraced.

Property

Common sexism aside (or maybe not), I would like to make a sweeping generalization. I believe that the unbridled capitalism and the heritage of private property in the “Western world” found an invaluable accomplice in the Cartesian division between (white, male, Christian, well off) thinking matter and the virtually inanimate extended matter. The definition of animals as moving machines, at the time when machines were meant for making money, paved the way for our non-human companions to become first objects, and then commodities. Is it surprising then that the Hayırsızada dog genocide (1910) was conducted in Istanbul at the time when the Young Turks were desperately trying to morph into “modernity” understood as “Western” capitalism? Starving 80,000 urban dogs to death received the blessing from the Institut Pasteur in Paris. Vagabond dogs still have a harder time than cats assimilating into the human Istanbul.[4]

Despite the fact that the EU Lisbon treaty defines domestic animals as sensory beings, most of the “Western” democracies treat them as property in their legislations. The Turkish Republic, amidst all the visible imperfections of its legal system, strongly opposes that definition. A recent law contends that all domestic animals, be they house-bound, vagabond, or urban, have the right to food, water, shelter, safety, and freedom. Whoever fails to provide them with those things can even end up in prison, depending on the gravity of the offence. Even though animal cruelty is a crime in many Western states, the difference is that in those states you own the animals, while in Turkey you owe subsistence and respect to the animals you don’t own. A laudable legal incentive—arguably barely needed for most Istanbulites at least. Through a dedicated and documented observation of Istanbul’s cats, I’ve come to define their relation to their human co-citizens as one of reciprocal commoning. The ideas of ownership and responsibility seem to fade away next to the ones of community, sustainability, mutuality, and care.

Infrastructure

So, when I would break the weekend COVID-19 curfew in order to fill up old yoghurt containers on my street with cat food, I would find at least some of them already freshly recharged. Still, Burak Taşdizen, a research associate of the Orient-Institute in Istanbul feels that the citizen care for street cats has been affected by the COVID-19 outbreak: “I myself have experienced a street cat running towards me from across the street during one of my walks in Moda, in need of affection if not of water or food. The situation regarding street animals amid COVID-19 has resonated on social media and the Turkish Ministry of Interior has responded very quickly by issuing a letter in order for local administrative bodies to take care of street animals’ needs.”

But why do I care what Burak thinks about the urban-cats situation during the pandemic? Because he cared enough to start thinking of them as a topic of his research. More precisely, he is investigating the urban infrastructure that developed around feline Istanbulites (read:cat houses). He told me, in a digital conversation, that he first got this idea while observing citizens’ interventions in public spaces of central residential areas of the city as a part of a PhD-seminar’s[1]walks:“Throughout the interventions that I documented emerged an accumulation of infrastructures built and maintained by the citizens, providing Istanbul’s cats with food, water and shelter. My initial analysis of these infrastructures was based on their temporality and materiality with a focus on their vulnerability in the face of urban currents be they weather conditions or simply neighbors, janitors or passers-by.”

 In what, at first sight, might seem to be unaesthetic piles of cardboard boxes and plastic containers abandoned on the side of the road, Burak sees rational “solutions and designerly knowledge productions”:  Isolation and insulation of “construction” materials, availability of food and water supplies, clustering of individual units in order to stimulate feline sociability and ensure longer habitation.

In-between Burak’s remarks confirm some of my hunches about urban cats navigating that narrow, compressed, slippery ground—the commons ground—situated in-between the private and the public, with regards to property, space, and agency. The municipalities like Kadıköy and Şişli claim in their official communication the public space of the street to be the cats’ natural habitat, and the local authorities their primary protectors. But “infrastructures such as those built on windows, or near apartment facades or in apartment backyards challenge the conventional definitions of street cat’s habitat… and the issue gets more convoluted when cats start moving from the street to common areas (ortak alan) such as apartment backyards, where a more one-on-one care can be developed between the care giver citizen and the care receiver street cat.” – says Burak.

Citizen cat infrastructure has a political note to it, too. Its insertion reclaims the right to the city for its non-human and human inhabitants alike. Burak explains that most Istanbul cat houses are set up through citizens’ initiatives, whether they order them from municipalities or commercial facilities, or construct them themselves. He calls them citizen-led temporary assemblages: “I believe the municipalities and muhtarlıklar could learn from the know-how of citizens (citizen-designers, citizen-caregivers) in shaping a more-than-human Istanbul. Already-repeating design decisions point at tried-and-tested solutions of care [that are] being consolidated and enriched for the well-being of this beloved non- human animal population who has the right to care and life as much as (if not more than) us human Istanbulites.”

Another story / why?

But why do these human citizens spend so much money and go through so much trouble? “I think, wherefore they’re mad!” – Descartes would cry. “Can they at least ride them to work?” – Henry Ford would ponder.  During the first month of my stay in ANAMED, Bianca, Güldem, and I went to see Fabrizio Terranova’s Donna Haraway: Story Telling for Earthly Survival at the SALT walk-in cinema. Then I read Staying with the Trouble: Making Kin in the Chthulucene. “It matters what matters we use to think other matters with. It matters what thoughts think thoughts, what stories tell stories” – Harraway relentlessly repeats while telling the story of sympoiesis, a collective and solidary worldbuilding by humans and non-humans. Is it unthinkable to supplant the story of human matter that thinks the non-thinking animal matter, with the story of (at least) two similar matters that co-create the world (and the city) together, just like that?

When I ask him “Why do humans care about the cats here? Because of rats? Because of gods?”, Burak says: “Breeding a cat is considered a sunnah: Prophet Mohammad himself befriended a cat named Muezza as has been told. The positive image of cats in Islam, I believe, has allowed cats to thrive in Istanbul and beyond. Still, recognizing that the human-cat co-evolution might have benefited both parties throughout history on more functional terms, I would refrain from interpreting the current street cat-citizen relationship on a functional ground. I think it has to do with the notion of compassion (merhamet) towards animals than anything else." There, it took four sentences to change the story of human and non-human co-existence.

Care

I started with Londoners killing cats, thinking they were contagious. I continued with Istanbulites risking fines, arguments, or even contagion in order to feed the cats and give them shelter. I could end with bitter, ironic comments, anthropomorphizing cuteness or violence, or current political contagion blame games. But I choose not to, because this story/history is neither linear nor circular. It’s always fuzzy.

I want to end with care. So many world leaders used the metaphor of war, and military language in general, to describe the current COVID-19 crisis. The leaders were crying war, while the citizens were taking drastic care of each other. Why does care need a military metaphor to be communicated and taken seriously? Is it hard to imagine it becoming a political concept? Not a soggy abstract common place, but a radical social act? I say care when I mean care. And here, I learned to say cat when I mean care.

Because I spoke with the person whose job is to observe and think about these things, you know, and he said: “In my opinion, Istanbul with its cat houses, provides a fruitful ground to discuss and imagine alternative futures on the cohabitation of domesticated animals and humans in urban environments, reminding us that societies have always been interdependent, and care is vital.”  Thank you, Burak. Care is vital.

“Yes, yes,” the Doctor groused, “even separated by universes the two of you are ganging up on me!”

Martha laughed as they explored the darkened landscape. “Outnumbered you are, Doctor.”

Which was when everything went to hell and he and Martha raced back to the TARDIS as if the hounds of hell were on their tails. Which, in a way, they were.

“What about Rose?” Martha demanded as the Chameleon Arch descended from the ceiling. “Has that always been up there?”

“I don’t know,” he admitted and hoped it was obvious he was talking about Rose and not the Chameleon Arch. “Not like I ever went through this before,” he snapped.

“Hey, don’t snap at me, I’m worried about your link with your wife.” But Martha’s voice shook and he tempered his own fear.

The Doctor ignored the arch, the TARDIS’s Cloister Bell shrilly reminding them they needed to hurry, the monitor unhelpfully tracking the Family’s progress in following them, and crossed the grating to Martha. He took his friend by the arms and looked down at her.

“Martha, I’m going to put my Time Lord mind into a watch.” He grimaced. “Not really sure how that’s going to work, but The Other swore it did.”

She looked at him askance, but seemed to understand now wasn’t the time to question him about other Time Lords mysteriously called The Other. “And Rose?”

“I’ll warn her,” he promised.

“If your Time Lordy self is in the watch—” she nodded to where the innocuous fob watch sat on the console—“can I communicate with you?”

He opened his mouth and closed it a couple time. “I’ve no idea.”

“You’re no help,” Martha grumbled but once again her voice wavered.

Despite the panic gripping his hearts and the uncertainty about communicating with Rose, the Doctor paused. He rounded the console and took Martha by the shoulders. He forced his voice to sound as calm as he didn’t feel and ordered his lips into a smile, however brief it lasted.

“Go pack,” he told her and squeezed her shoulders. “The TARDIS will set out what you need.”

As if in agreement, the TARDIS brightened the lights. Martha glanced at the Time Rotor and her lips twitched in what might’ve been a smile. If he was being generous. Martha nodded and raced down the hall to her room. The Doctor didn’t watch her leave, but looked at the Time Rotor and closed his eyes.

“What do you think, Old Girl? Think our bond is strong enough to survive?”

He received a mournful wail in reply.

“Take care of her, yeah?” The Doctor opened his eyes. “Rose and Martha.”

**** Martha Jones, late of London, resident doctor at Royal Hope Hospital, companion to the Doctor, and co-conspirator with the TARDIS, looked around the Edwardian all boys’ school and shuddered.

She hated this place.

She hated the air and the dust, she hated the dark wood banisters that screamed wealthy snobs and she hated the stupid floors that refused to stay clean. She hated the food and the gardens and the air and the very reason they were here in the first place.

It’ll be fine, he said. No need to worry, he said. It’s just three months, he said.

Martha slipped her hand into her apron pocket and brushed her fingertips over the watch. At least the Doctor listened to them—she, the TARDIS, and Rose—and hadn’t left his fob watch with his Time Lord consciousness lying about in his rooms, completely unguarded. Daft man, thinking nothing would happen to it.

Like teenage Edwardian boys weren’t a bunch of petty little thieves with sticky fingers and wandering hands, the lot of them.

“I hate this place,” she thought to the Doctor as the pad of her finger traced the intricate Gallifreyan circles over the watch.

The Doctor’s voice—his real voice, not the less compelling, flatter one John Smith used—laughed at her. Well, not at her, Martha conceded. But he sounded a hell of a lot happier than she’d ever heard him. She had to wonder if this was how he sounded around Rose all the time.

“It’s just another adventure, Martha, think of it that way.”

“Stop it,” Rose’s voice snapped.

That had certainly taken time to get used to. Hearing another voice whenever she thought/spoke to the Doctor. However it did it, the watch channeled her own thoughts and speech to the Doctor’s Time Lord consciousness which was still connected via telepathic marriage bond to Rose.

“Martha, you’re doing great. I know it’s hard, not having any support, being in this place, but you really are a star.” Rose’s voice, which had a strange layer to it Martha associated with the TARDIS, soothed her as she walked into the kitchens on a far-too-early weekday morning.

“Rose is right, Martha,” the Doctor’s voice chimed in, soberer now. “I may—” and Martha clearly saw him tugging his ear in embarrassed consternation—“have not thought this all the way through.”

“I have,” Martha mumbled. “And being in the middle of Farringham nowhere is better than modern day London. If the Family does find us, at least the damage will be minimal.” She sighed and accepted Mr. Smith’s tray, forcing her fingers from the watch.

It wouldn’t do for anyone to see her with it, anyway. She’d be accused of stealing and instantly dismissed—if not beaten first. Did they still do that to servants in 1913? It didn’t matter; even if she took refuge in the TARDIS, she’d still be too far from the Doctor (Mr. Smith, whatever) to be of any help.

“Listen to me.” She sighed as she walked up to Mr. Smith’s room. “Talking about damage being minimal. I’m a doctor. I help people. Not calculate minimal damage. Into whatsoever houses I enter, I will enter to help the sick, and I will abstain from all intentional wrong-doing…”

Martha pushed open the door to John Smith’s room and watched him stretch in the brilliant sunlight coming through the windows.

“Ah, Martha, thank you.”

His wedding ring glinted off the sun, a testament to how deeply he loved Rose, no matter the man. He took the tray from her and set it on the desk, staring down at it as if he never saw it before. Martha wondered what he did see or think, but then he was moving around the room again.

“It’s Christmas in a few months,” he said, voice low and broken.

Martha stilled. She knew that voice, heard it when he—the Doctor—first spoke of Rose, of his planet. Now, she watched John Smith wander the room, robe over his ridiculous pinstriped jimjams. She’d snickered the first time she’d seen them, mentally laughing at the Doctor’s propensity for pinstripes.

“It is,” she said carefully.

Turning from him, she busied herself with straightening. Until this blasted place and time, Martha had never been one to clean when she was nervous. She couldn’t decide if it was a habit she wanted to translate into her other life or one she hoped might die a well-deserved death in 1913, never to be resurrected again.

“Are you going home to your family?”

She opened her mouth then snapped it closed. Last she spoke to her mum, it’d been Election Day, May, 2007 and Francine had no idea her daughter hadn’t been at her flat.

“I haven’t decided,” she admitted. “You?”

“I—no.” He looked up at her, broken, defeated shattered. “Where would I go?”

Oh. Right. “Away from here,” she tried but even to her own ears the words sounded feeble and useless. Helpless.

Her fingers dipped into her apron pocket again and she brushed them over the watch. Rose’s warm support slid up her arm and curled around her heart, giving her strength. No wonder the Doctor fell in love with her—no wonder John Smith looked so lost, so dead and vulnerable without her.

“This’ll be—well.” He looked back at the tray and picked at his watery eggs. “My first Christmas without Rose.”

At the words, barely a breath of sound, Martha’s hand clenched around the watch. One by one, she forced her fingers to release the thing and slowly withdrew her hand from the pocket and smoothed down her heavy dress.

“Yeah.” She licked her lips and cleared her throat. “I know. I’m sorry.”

He sniffed and it reminded her so strongly of the Doctor, Martha thought someone punched her in the stomach. Maybe they weren’t so different as she first believed. Maybe she let her telepathic conversations with Rose and the Doctor cloud her view of John Smith before her.

“I still dream about her.” Another breath of sound, far more broke than the previous words.

“Oh?” Her brain raced for more than that, but she had nothing.

“I dream we’re running.” He looked down at his empty hand and Martha tangled her fingers together to stop herself from reaching for the watch. Or for him.

No matter how much she hated this place, how she disagreed with the Doctor’s choice of locales and time periods, or this ridiculous plan that clearly had not been fully thought out, she cared for the Doctor. She hated seeing him—or John Smith—in such pain. Maybe keeping the watch and being able to, peripherally at least, tap into Rose and the Doctor’s telepathic party line hadn’t been the brightest idea she and the TARDIS ever came up with.

If John kept the watch, would it bring him comfort? Solace? Would being part of the telepathic commune the Doctor shared with Rose ease his grief or add to it?

“Hand in hand,” John Smith continued. “She’s wearing the most scandalous clothing, but she’s so beautiful. Laughing.” He cleared his throat and looked like he wanted to stop, but Martha crossed the room and rested her hand on his arm. “She’s laughing. And alive.”

Tears clogged her throat and Martha tried to tell him not to grieve, that everything would be all right. The words stuck in her throat. “She loved you so much, Mr. Smith.” Though she had no idea how John thought Rose died, she had to say something. “Her last thoughts were about you.”

“I know you and she were close, Martha.” He squeezed her hand then stepped away, walking to the window.

Martha knew this reaction, too. The Doctor did it often, whenever he missed Rose’s hand in his or said something Martha knew was meant for Rose. She didn’t know how, but she knew he timed their adventures to coincide with Rose’s sleep in the other universe. However he did it, he wanted Martha’s sleeping hours to spend with Rose’s waking hours.

She didn’t blame him and didn’t hold it against him. She cared more deeply for him than she should for a man desperately in love with his wife, but Martha had grown to care for Rose, too. Through the Doctor’s stories and the TARDIS’s photos, Martha felt as if she traveled with the Doctor and Rose. Not just her memory.

“I dream we’re traveling the world,” he said to the window but Martha knew better. He really spoke to Rose. “Such strange places, completely unrealistic. I dreamt we met Charles Dickens!”

Martha forced a half laugh. “And did you see ghosts?”

He looked over his shoulder, and even with the sunlight at his back, she saw his look. As if she read his mind “Yes, strange blue creatures, not at all like The Signal-man’s specters.”

Martha had no idea what the signal-man was or how it related to a ghost, but merely nodded. Given her experience with Shakespeare and witches, she believed Rose and the Doctor saw Charles Dickens and met ghosts. Of course they had.

Maybe the school library had a collection of Dickens. Maybe they’d even let her borrow it.

“Right.” She cleared her throat. “I need to—duties and all. I have to get—” Martha stepped back, fingers once more brushing the watch. “I am sorry about Rose, Mr. Smith.” Oops, was she supposed to call Rose Mrs. Smith? Too late now. “She loves you very much.”

Cursing her grammatical slip, Martha hurried out of the room. She gripped the watch and, uncaring what time it was in Rose’s universe, muttered, “This is the worst plan ever.”

“It’s not one of my best,” the Doctor’s quiet, apologetic voice echoed in her head. “But I won’t be responsible for another genocide.” He took in a deep breath and Martha recognized his words—and wondered again what he meant by them. “If this plan keeps the Family from taking my life and using my regeneration energy to conquer the multiverse, then it’s worth it.”

She deflated. “Yes. All right. Fine. You’re right in that. But next time, I’m making the plan.” She stormed downstairs to the kitchens. “With the TARDIS.”

**** “He’s a strange one,” Redfern said, eyes following the Doctor (John Smith—whatever) in a way Martha most certainly did not like.

Purposely clasping her hands in front of her and resisting (barely) the urge to touch the watch, Martha looked at the Matron stoically. She closed the door firmly behind them and stared the other woman down. “Oh?”

“Hmm, yes. Head in the clouds, that one,” Redfern added. “Tell me, Martha, who is he?”

“I’m sorry?” At least he hadn’t given Redfern his journal. That was something—right?

The Matron looked over her shoulder to the closed door of John Smith, a more than slightly longing look in her gaze that Martha did not like one damn bit. “It’s like he’s left the kettle on. Like he knows he has something to get back to, but he can’t remember what.”

Was that forced, pathetic laugh from her? Martha grimaced. “That’s just him.”

She wanted to literally wave Redfern’s words away but was afraid to untangle her fingers. She didn’t want to touch the watch—not only because she didn’t want the other woman to know she possessed it but also because she didn’t want to accidently transfer any of this to Rose.

“You arrived with him, didn’t you?” Redfern’s gaze sharpened on her but Martha grew up under the stern watchfulness of Francine Jones. Joan Redfern’s condescending glare paled compared to her own mother. “He found you employment here at the school, isn’t that right?”

“I used to work for the family.” Martha repeated the same line she’d used on Jenny, the Headmaster, half the other teachers who bothered to realize she was even there, and even John Smith once when he was in one of his Doctor-fogs, prattling on about void and holes in the universe. “He just sort of inherited me.”

Redfern sniffed. “Well, I’d be careful. If you don’t mind my saying, you sometimes seem a little familiar with him. Best remember your position.”

“He mourns his wife,” Martha said, probably a tad more acerbic than necessary.

But she’d grown protective over Rose. Once the Doctor told her Rose wasn’t dead but trapped in another universe, he shared many stories of their adventures together. So many, Martha felt as if she knew Rose. Even if half their conversations were probably in Martha’s mind.

She liked the Doctor’s wife, even more so now that she, herself, ‘talked’ to Rose through the watch. And now that that (horribly embarrassing) misunderstanding about availability and interest had been cleared up, Martha found a wonderful friend in the Doctor.

She’d protect them both with her life.

“There’s something to be said for companionship,” Redfern murmured in what was no doubt not meant to be heard.

Martha stiffened. “Give it up, Matron. John Smith will mourn Rose for a hundred, a thousand years. I promise you, he’ll never remarry.”

Redfern looked at her, surprised, but Martha met her gaze defiantly. She was so very tired of being beaten down by this time and their entrenched prejudices of race and class. She hated it here and once the Doctor was fully restored, they’d be having words.

“You sound very sure of that, Martha.” She sniffed and stepped away. “Especially considering your position.”

Martha laughed and walked away from the woman. “I’m positive,” she said over her shoulder in a brilliant display of insubordination. “Especially given my position.”

Which sounded dirtier than she’d meant it to, but Martha knew the other woman wouldn’t realize that. Well…hoped Redfern wouldn’t, at least!

Luckily, Nurse Redfern, for all she was an arrogant, prejudiced woman with no understanding of equality or acceptance, understood John’s mourning and they’d attended the local dance as friends. It’s finally time. Sorry this post has taken so long to write out! My brain has been fighting me every step of the way.

BUT HERE WE GO! TIME TO TIE UP SOME LOOSE ENDS BEFORE THE PLOT GETS HEAD OF ME

FIRST THINGS FIRST, with a short moment of calm among all this madness, Toby still takes time to help his new roomie learn about his new life. This includes convincing Strickler to bargain with Dictatious to find information on AAARRRGGHH!!!’s breed, taking him out of late night adventures with the team so he can get used to this new world (Angor Rot is far better at explaining things to him than Strickler, but hey at least Strickler tries), and even making Flash Cards with Jim and then later quiz the big guy on them.

Speaking of, that’s where we begin.

Toby reads off the cards while Jim reads the answers. For every question right, Toby’s gotten some old VHS tapes no one in the house watches anymore and has them as incentive. AAARRRGGHH!!! sits across from them.

“ok, this is an easy one. You’re walking through the market, and realize there’s a gnome climbing in your fur! what do you do?”

AAARRRGGHH!!! is quiet for a long minute.

“you can do it,” Jim assures him. “almost any answer will work.”

The boys both nod to the troll as he continues to think, until eventually he makes a motion with his hands that could translate to crushing the gnome.

Jim laughs lightly at the sight of his thin teacher standing beside this mountain of a man, now trapped in his strong grip. Barbra leads him off to help with something and he gladly agrees.

“You teach at.... Arcadia High, yes?”
