Sketches for an au I’ve been working on for a while And by a while I mean three months

Anyway

Notes if anyone’s interested:

-The main concept is I have made MOST life series characters into bugs and they live in a forest yadayada I can yank these guys around like puppets now that I have a story for them

-Ive taken to calling it bug life definitely not based on the popular Pixar movie at all

-*deep inhale* Lizzie’s a moth (rosy maple) Scars a spider (there’s lore behind the arm thing) The small doodle of Joel is an owlfly (just because I wanted him to have antenna) Skizz (yes that’s Skizz I know he looks a little off) is a Leafbug and I promise to fix his design later because it is a little confusing Annd Mumbos a flying stick bug

-This is not all the designs, I just wanted to give Tumblr something to see if my weasels like them, if they do I will make more

-There will be and is shipping (of the characters not real people don’t make it weird- Joel and Lizzie as an exception however) so be aware if you ever come across this art ever again

-I’m a fast writer but never a fast artist so if this does become a thing it will be very veerrryy slow

-this is not based on one series entirely I just have to many ideas, to much time, and a not enough to give

It was very stressful. Ended up failing the marking period for English, but not by as much as I was failing before. Could still pull up the overall grade by the end of the semester.

out of curiosity, what’s your process for doing the little lasso tool doodles??? I’ve done them before and they’re a lot of fun, but I always have trouble with layering since it can look awkward just tracing around shapes if you’re only using one layer. do you use multiple layers or do you just already have a good sense of where to put everything ??

unfortunately the only footage i have is from my streams! but here is a timelapse of one of my vods where i used the lasso tool, ignore the chat LOL

u can check out my streams on cuptoast on twitch for other VODS of lasso tool drawings, i doing drawing streams every other day and ive been making a lot of lasso tool pieces recently

i dont sketch with this style, imagine carving a block of soap LOL, i just shape it and layer things accordingly, i dont use a lot of layers with this style and mostly freehand it

some advice i have is to draw layered, not as in draw with actual layers but like, for example, when idraw zacaharie i draw his hair, then his face, then is mask ,all layered on top of each other in the same layer

drawing with the lasso tool is very fun but i understand that it can be complicated and difficult! its one of the main reasons i draw the batter with it but not ethan, ethan has a lot more colors and a lot more layers, the batter is more fun because of how simple his design is

its good for practicing values and poses because of the linesless style, good luck! and if u every have questions or want advice u could always stop by stream and send a chat!

He honestly almost started crying when you showed him your painting of him

A gentle thrum of music played in the air, soft and sweet just like the current moment you were in.

Astro had his upper arms wrapped around your waist and his lower ones massaging your upper thighs, head snuggled onto your stomach with a soft wispy noise that sounded awfully close to a purr.

You had a sketch book resting on his head, humming along with the background music. Your pencil making soft scritchy noises as you sketched out Astro, you didn’t do it often! You never showed him either.. you didn’t know if he didn’t would like it considering he doesn’t like photos. The flashing of a camera made him nervous, making his anxiety skyrocket and usually ended with him MIA for meetings. It was easier to just.. not.

Focusing back onto the paper instead of your thoughts you smiled softly, stars.. you loved this silly little moon. From the fluffy rim of his hat, to his second pair of arm, and all the way down to his two goofy little tails. You did small doodles on the edge of your papers, never really full sketch’s or pieces though. You didn’t want to make him uncomfortable! But as people have said, to loved by an artist is to be remembered forever.. or something like that-

You didn’t notice your blue moon partner peaking his eyes open from your lack of movement, looking up at you to see if you had zoned out just to see you staring at the paper. His curiosity peaked slightly, wiggling up to see what you drew.

You jolted at the sudden movement, looking at Astro you moved the sketch pad closer to your chest blocking his view of the paper.

“Whatcha doin?”

You ask confuzzled.

“..was just wondering why you were staring at the paper, bad sketch..?”

He asked his voice a little raspy but no louder then a whisper, titling his head, you normally always showed all of your drawings! He loved to see you get so excited about and then go into detail about all of what you did.. it just made him so happy to see you happy.

“Oh! Nonono, just thinking is all!”

“..could I see?”

“I- uhm, I don’t think you’d like it Azzy”

You squeaked, a little nervous, Astro how very just blinked at you confused. He loved all your art! Even if it looked terrible!

“Mm.. well shouldn’t I be the judge of that?”

He smirked, a little sass lacing into his voice.

“Okay smarty pants, but still-“

You huffed back.

A beat of silence passed before your sides were attacked with feather light tickles, you shrieked in surprise before laughing loudly.

“AH- HAHA- A-ASTRO NO!-“

You yelped in between laughs as Astro sneakily yoinked your stuff. He stopped tickling you, looking at the paper his eyes going wide.

You breathed heavily, still getting some of the giggles out before hugging and look at the moon toon.

“That was so unfair!”

You grumbled, seeing him frozen you tilted your head, quickly realizing you don’t have your drawing book in hand your own eyes widen and your heart sinks with panic.

“I-I’m sorry- I shouldn’t have drawn you without your permission and I know you don’t like photos, I’m so so sorry Astro-“

You spilled at nervously, eyes shaking slightly. You felt so terrible, a good partner doesn’t go against boundaries! Why would you do that? You should’ve never made those-

A hand gently setting on your face pulled from your thoughts, you looked up your eyes meeting Astros periwinkle ones.. they had little white spots mimicking stars in them that made you want to fall in love all over again.

“It’s beautiful my moonlight.. I love it..”

He murmured, softly bonking his head with yours.

“Y-you do..? I was worried I’d.. make you uncomfortable”

“I do.. you draw so beautifully love, you made me look divine my dear”

He hums gently, wrapping his other pair of arms around you again, holding you close planting a sweet and short kiss to your head.

“Do you have anymore you can show me..?”

“Mhm”

You nod staring at him with a love filled smile, wrapping your arms around. You’re so glad everything turned out okay, even if it was a little silly..

a while ago in june of last year i posted this sketch dump and received a very wonderful ask from @mochamai wherein the mysterious ghost hand to the left of maedhros was brought to attention..... i hv seized this opportunity to do these very self indulgent doodles of Melkor who (loathe as i am to admit it) is the individual that hand belongs to 😭😭

HEAR ME OUT OK. it was just supposed to be a random hand right. i had drawn it with normal nails and everything!!! BUT THEN. then. i was on pinterest browsing character design inspiration and i found the infamous stained dark claw hand (if you know you know) and i realised it was my one chance to actually incorporate it into my silm designs... then i considered who would fit it and all i could think of was post-silmaril morgoth.... and here we are :((((

anyways ive been kinda busy these past two months BUT i used this chance to squeeze in some anatomy practice so errrrr dont ask me why he's shirtless in most of these..... i will only speak in the presence of my attorney........

i'm loving seeing you post more of your art!! out of curiosity, how long have you been drawing? is there anything specific you do to practice or do you just pick something and draw it? (i've been trying to learn to draw myself for the past year or so, and seeing your art more often has become somewhat of an inspiration for me!)

ive been doodling all my life! thought when i say "doodle" i mean "as an unmedicated youth i was unable to focus on a drawing for more than 45 minutes at a time"

here's some posts from an art blog i had in middle school, and the first year of highschool.

what most critically separates this art from the art ive been doing recently is that i NEVER used any refrence. ever. i looked at stuff to make sure i knew what it looked like, but the rest was always roughly estimated based on what i thought would look good (which was largely based on cartoons).

but i only ever started trying to "learn how to draw" over the past year. here's the thing: spending a bunch of hours practicing drawing cubes and cylinders is like. all you have to do to see yourself start improving in real time.

draw a bunch of cubes and cylinders, and learn how to make them look realistic in proportion to each other using references to guide you. practice drawing stuff like basic buildings, cans of soda, maybe a cake (3 short fat cylinders on top of each other) if you're feeling daring. then try to draw slightly more complicated shapes, like spheres and cones and stuff. layer these shapes on top of each other to make more complicated shapes. you're gettin the picture.

infuriatingly, basic shapes is like 40% of the "getting it to click" work done.

after than, move on to 30 second sketches of nude models using this site. yeah, only 30 seconds. it doesnt matter if it comes out looking like shit, the point is learning how to simplify complicated shapes down into their most basic lines. dont waste time erasing. dont waste time pressing ctrl-z. erasing is your enemy. you arent learning how to erase, you're learning how to draw. (you'll get your eraser back later).

do this hundreds of times. yeah, hundreds. put on a podcast or something. get in a voice call with your friends. but ya gotta practice this one. that's the next 20% of making it "click".

now, unfortunately, the last 40% is just a matter of slamming your head against the wall of art until things slowly start to look better and better. it's sort of like a chemical formula, in that the closer you get to 100% purity, the more and more difficult it becomes to distill it.

the key is to ALWAYS use reference. you cannot learn how to realistically draw something you've conjured from your mind if you cannot depict something that's right in front of you realistically.

im currently in this valley, as most artists are. in fact i dont think it's possible to make art "click" in your mind 100%, but it sure is fun to inch closer and closer!

below is a bunch of art in chronological order from april to now. you'll see that it's not really a straight road of getting better and better, but you'll see my lines slowly getting more confident and details becoming more clearly defined!
