And it hurts to see you laugh at us over this. And especially when I could’ve died (and am probably lucky to be alive).
Unfortunately, I’ve chosen to try to enjoy life anyway.
And as somebody that fully intended to move away for school and never come back, who knows that this means for our relationship. (He did say “you win I’ll try” whereafter I explained it’s not a battle it’s a matter of health and gave him some details of what I went through during and after covid. But. He did agree to try. He did agree to try. (We’re ignoring how he completely conflates health with weight and doesn’t take me seriously for the issues I had with it because I’m fat)).

TAKEAWAYS:
We are in the biggest Covid surge in the US in at least two years
Time to wear a mask in crowded spaces (personally, I'd recommend one in all indoor public spaces and crowded outdoor spaces)
Immunity has waned and the new variant is 'distinctly more challenging to our immune system'
Updated boosters should be available the week of September 1st
The US needs to invest more in nasal vaccine programs, and should have already - this is the thing that could help actually get us out of the woods.
We are continuing to see more folks develop Long Covid even from mild infections
You should just read the article it's not that long but that's the run down
Me Editorializing: Let’s protect and care for ourselves and each other!

The Swiss Cheese Model of Covid Prevention
Tumblr media
An edited version of the swiss cheese model tailored towards the measures that you as an individual can take to minimize your risk of infection. Public health is ultimately what its name implies, public, but that doesn't mean you're powerless.
Covid prevention is not all-or-nothing. Think of it as risk reduction, rather than a binary.
Let's go through these step by step.
VACCINES
The current vaccines are meant primarily to reduce chances of severe illness, hospitalization, and death. They will reduce your chance of infection a bit--but not nearly as much as you might think. You should still get your boosters regularly, because avoiding severe illness is of course worth doing.
If you haven't gotten the updated monovalent vaccine yet, go get it. It is not a booster. Think of it as a new vaccine. It's targeted towards the XBB lineages, which are now the most common variants. Your last boosters were likely of the bivalent type, aimed at both the original Covid strain from 2020 and Omicron. The new vaccine is monovalent, meaning it targets one family in particular.
Some studies suggest that the Novavax vaccine, which is a more traditional protein-based vaccine, is more effective and safer than mRNA vaccines, and offers better protection against future variants. Of course, the data we have so far isn't 100% conclusive (the last paper I linked is a preprint). Make of these findings what you will, just something to keep in mind. The new Novavax vaccine's availability is still limited, especially outside of the US.
MASKS
Tumblr media
Masking is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself. While it is true that masking and reducing Covid transmission protects those around you, the idea that masks can't protect the wearer is outdated information from the early days of the pandemic when medical authorities refused to acknowledge that Covid is airborne.
The key to protecting yourself is to wear a well-fitting respirator. You want to minimize any gaps where air might leak out. If your glasses get fogged up, that's a sign that air is leaking.
Headbands will always have a tighter fit than earloop masks (and therefore provide better protection). However, you can use earloop extenders to improve the fit of earloop masks. You can find these online. Your comfort in wearing a mask is important, but there are options for compromise.
The above graphic doesn't include elastomeric respirators. While some (like the Flo Mask) are expensive, they can be much more affordable than buying disposables--look for P100 respirators at your local hardware store, but make sure it fits your face well.
For more general information, see this FAQ. For mask recommendations (NA-centric, sorry!), see my list here or Mask Nerd's YouTube channel.
For situations where you need to hydrate but don't want to take your mask off, consider the SIP valve.
Not even N95s are foolproof (N95 means it filters at least 95% of particles--with the other 5% potentially reaching you). Most people will likely not have a perfect fit. There will be situations where you'll have to take your mask off. The key is risk reduction, and that's why the Swiss cheese model is crucial.
If you can't afford high-quality masks, look for a local mask bloc or other organization that gives out free masks. Project N95 has unfortunately shut down. In Canada, there's donatemask.ca.
AVOID CROWDED INDOOR SPACES
This is rather self-explanatory. Indoor transmission is much, much, much more likely than outdoor transmission. If it's possible to move an activity outdoors instead, consider doing so.
If possible, try going to places like stores or the post office during less busy hours.
Viral particles can stay in the air for a considerable amount of time even after the person who expelled them has left. Do not take off your mask just because no one is currently present, if you know that it was previously crowded.
A CO2 monitor is a decent proxy for how many viral particles may have accumulated in the air around you. The gold standard is the Aranet4, but it's expensive, so here are some more affordable alternatives.
VENTILATION AND AIR FILTERS
Tumblr media
Ventilation is effective for the same reason that outdoors is safer than indoors. If it's warm enough, keep windows open whenever possible. If it's cold, even cracking them open occasionally is better than nothing. Try to open windows or doors on different sides of a room to maximize airflow.
HEPA air filters can significantly reduce viral transmission indoors. Make sure to find one suitable for the room size, and replace the filters regularly. You want to look for devices with HEPA-13 filters.
You can use websites like these to calculate how long it takes for a device to change all the air in a room. Remember what I said about viral particles being able to hang around even after people have left? If an air purifier provides 2 air changes per hour, that means that after 30 minutes, any potential viral particles should be gone.
If you can't afford a commercial air filter, here's a useful DIY filter you can make with relatively simple materials. The filtration capacity is great--but due to being built with duct tape, replacing filters will be a challenge.
If you have to hold meetings or meet with people at work, having a smaller filter on the desk between you will also reduce chances of infection.
As a bonus, HEPA filters will also filter out other things like dust and allergens!
REDUCE LENGTH OF EXPOSURE IF EXPOSURE IS UNAVOIDABLE
Viral load refers to the amount of virus in a person's blood. If you've been exposed to someone with Covid, how much you've been exposed matters.
You might escape infection if the viral load you've been exposed to is very small. Or, even if you get infected, there will be less virus in you overall, leading to milder illness--and crucially, a lower chance of the virus penetrating deep into your body, creating reservoirs in your organs and wreaking long-term havoc.
A low viral load is also less contagious.
This is the same reason that wearing your mask most of the time, but having to take it off for eating, is still much better than not wearing your mask at all.
RECHARGEABLE PORTABLE AIR FILTERS
Tumblr media
You might attract some odd looks. But if you're at high risk or just want to be as protected as possible, small portable air filters can help. Try to find models small enough to take with you on public transportation, to school, or while traveling.
These devices will be far too small to clean the air in the whole room. The goal is to have it filter air in your immediate vicinity. Be sure to angle the device so that the air is blowing in your face.
Unfortunately, rechargeable devices are much rarer and harder to find than normal air filters, and many are also expensive.
The best option at the moment, apart from DIY (which is possible, but you need to know what you're doing), seems to be the SmartAir QT3. The size and shape are a bit clunky, but it fits in a backpack. Its battery life isn't long, but it can be supplemented with a power bank.
NASAL SPRAYS
There's some research that suggests that some nasal sprays may be effective in reducing risk of infection by interfering with viruses' ability to bind to your cells.
These sprays are generally affordable, easy to find, and safe. The key ingredient is carrageenan, which is extracted from seaweed. So there are no potential risks or side effects.
Be sure to follow the instructions on the packaging carefully. Here's a video on how to properly use nasal sprays if you've never used them before.
Covixyl is another type of nasal spray that uses a different key ingredient, ethyl lauroyl arginate HCI. It also aims to disrupt viruses' ability to bind to cell walls. Unfortunately, I think it's difficult to obtain outside of the US.
CONCLUSION
None of the methods listed here are foolproof on their own. But by layering them, you can drastically reduce your chances of infection.
The most important layers, by far, are masking and air quality. But you should also stay conscientious when engaging with those layers. Don't let yourself become complacent with rules of thumb, and allow yourself to assess risk and make thought out decisions when situations arise where you might have to take off your mask or enter a high-risk indoor area, such as a hospital.
Remember that the goal is risk reduction. It's impossible to live risk-free, because we live among countless other people. But you can use knowledge and tools to keep yourself as safe as possible.

“I’ve been masking for the last several years to avoid COVlD infection and its long-term complications. Nonetheless, I caught COVlD in August 2023, and now have Long COVlD. Prior to my infection I wore KN95s; I now wear an N95 in all indoor spaces (including daily subway rides) and in crowded outdoor settings.”   Behind the hot pink KN95 is Michal (outofnapkins), children’s media writer, and recently a co-writer of the jews4maskrights petition.   “Last week, New York politicians floated the idea of a mask ban, which would endanger the most high-risk New Yorkers. Any kind of ban would be dangerous, and exemptions would be unenforceable: a ban would place an undue burden on vulnerable populations (and still healthy people taking reasonable precautions) to prove they deserve masks; it would exclude high-risk people like me from public life; it would keep visitors out of New York, including those who visit for critical medical care; it would further stigmatize masking, and enable stopping and bullying of people who mask. A ban would endanger everyone.   As a Jewish New Yorker at high risk for COVlD complications, I was especially horrified to see antisemitism cited as an incentive for a ban. We would be safer if everyone masked, not if masking were reserved for a select few. A mask ban would place everyone at greater risk, which goes against Jewish law and Jewish values. Contrary to the governor and mayor’s narrative, the Jewish community does not want a mask ban. So several COVlD-cautious Jewish friends and I have created an open letter.   If you’re Jewish, please sign it at  www.jewsformaskrights.com. We’re also @jews4maskrights on social media. Even if you’re not Jewish, please share it!  Share it with your network, with clergy, with organizations you’re active with.   You don’t have to be a regular mask-wearer, or live in New York, to sign! You just have to care about someone who is, and to care about the Jewish value of the sanctity of life. Please help us protect our right to protect ourselves.”

Mask Bans Insult Disabled People, Endanger Our Health, and Threaten Our Ability to Protest
As a high-risk disabled person who depends on others to keep me safe, I have written about the importance of masking, and I advocate for mask mandates in health care settings. But those individual efforts seem futile against the onslaught of proposed mask bans that would contribute to the spread of COVID and other illnesses, while also pushing high-risk people out of public spaces and protests, violating their right to assemble under the First Amendment.
[...]
Today, the mask is the unsightly marker of deviant individuals: the sick, the immunocompromised, the disabled, and the protester who wishes to keep their identity anonymous. (Many demonstrators at pro-Palestine marches have worn medical masks or other face coverings, both to protect their identity from authorities and to protect their health in large crowds.) We’re told such masked individuals threaten the moral order of society, and these bans are meant to keep the public “safe.”
[...]
Across the country, protests on college campuses have shaken leaders who are unsure how to handle such a groundswell of activism. Leaders in some states took the opportunity to go after student mask use, as in Ohio, where the Republican attorney general threatened on-campus protesters with an obscure anti-mask law. Now, with Democratic officials in California and New York also exploring mask bans, we're reminded that ableism is a bipartisan project. Any mask ban is a dangerous prospect, as many regions are currently dealing with an increase in COVID cases, and these patterns are expected to continue multiple times a year. (Days after Los Angeles’s Democratic mayor Karen Bass said the city would look into a potential mask ban at protests, she contracted COVID.) A mask ban on the subway would endanger a public good that many people depend on — and have a right to — and the ability of high-risk people to participate in society, to be seen, and matter to the broader community. Mask bans are a labor issue, as well. A resident of New York City, who asked to remain anonymous to protect their privacy, says, “I wear a mask and encourage others to do so because, prior to COVID, masks were a common form of PPE for indoor and outdoor airborne hazards at work.… The criminalization of masks is a criminalization of workers protecting ourselves…." The resident continues, "Governor Hochul and Mayor Adams supporting attempts to ban masks are the latest examples of New York State Democrats trying to destroy the lives of poor and working-class New Yorkers.”
[...]
What is clear to me is that disabled people have never felt safe. Many of us view masking as a form of solidarity with workers, activists, and people of color all over the world fighting fascism and genocide. But mask bans send the message that it is a crime to be disabled. I think of people who have fought hard to stay relatively safe since early 2020, those who hang on a precipice that feels like it could fall at any moment. Some days I wonder what my breaking point will be.

You know how in The Strange Case of Starship Iris (podcast) the IGR doesn’t care who is harmed by the nanoswarm? And how Violet gets a cough and Arkady is beside herself with worry (even if she’s trying extremely hard not to show it)? And how everyone’s favourite trans linguist in space, Brian Jeeter, is disabled by the after-effects of the nanoswarm? And it is awful. Krejjh is terrified that they’re going to lose Brian and everyone else is hugely worried too. They all know what it’s like to lose people; they know how precious life is. (Brian’s having a ****ing hellish time with his new chronic illness, by the way. In case anyone didn’t realise because his manner is still so gentle) Okay, that’s fiction. Compelling, well-written fiction. And it hit home really hard for me as a chronically ill person.  It’s also very frightening to see something similar play out in real time. The COVID-19 pandemic is not over. Governments around the world are pretending it’s fine to ‘go back to normal’, whilst not giving a fuck who is killed or disabled by Covid. An airborne virus that continues to spread and mutate. Disabled lives are not expendable. Neither is yours. Wear a mask. In public indoor spaces and crowded outdoor spaces (this is basically all outdoor spaces if you live in a town/city), including at Pride. FFP2/3 or N95 masks give you best protection (especially ones that fasten behind your head). Wear a mask to protect yourself. Wear a mask to protect the people around you.

From choosing the best venue to decorations, food, and entertainment, we’ve got you covered — without using difficult words or confusing steps.
Why Choose an Outdoor Venue in Dubai for a Birthday Party?
Enjoy Beautiful Weather and Open Space
Dubai is known for its sunny skies and warm weather, which makes it perfect for outdoor gatherings—especially during the cooler months (October to April). You’ll have more room for guests, games, and decorations without feeling crowded.
More Fun Activities for Everyone
Outdoor spaces give you more options for entertainment. From games for kids to music and dancing for adults, there’s plenty of room to move around and have fun.
Natural Backdrops for Amazing Photos
An outdoor venue offers natural beauty that adds charm to your party. Think of green gardens, golden beaches, or twinkling city lights from a rooftop—your photos will look stunning without the need for fancy editing.
Step-by-Step Guide to Planning Your Outdoor Birthday Bash
Step 1: Decide on Your Budget
Before you get too excited, start with a simple budget. Knowing how much you can spend helps you avoid stress later. Include costs for: venue rental, food and drinks, decorations, entertainment or activities, photography or videography, cake and gifts. Pro Tip: Keep a little extra in case of last-minute changes or needs — especially when booking popular outdoor Birthday Party Venues in Dubai.
Step 2: Choose the Right Outdoor Venue
Dubai has many outdoor venues for all styles and budgets. Think about what kind of vibe you want for your birthday and how many guests you’ll have.
Popular Outdoor Venue Types in Dubai:
1. Public Parks
Examples: Zabeel Park, Creek Park, Safa Park Great for: Kids’ parties, family gatherings, picnics What to know: Usually affordable, but may need permission for decorations or BBQ setups.
2. Beaches
Examples: Kite Beach, JBR Beach, Al Mamzar Beach Great for: Laid-back, casual parties with sunset views What to know: Be ready for sand, wind, and bring sun protection.
3. Desert Camps
Great for: Traditional vibes with camel rides, BBQ, and music What to know: Some tour companies offer birthday packages in the desert.
4. Rooftop Venues
Great for: Teen or adult birthday parties with city skyline views What to know: More stylish and usually come with in-house catering.
5. Private Villas with Gardens
Great for: Elegant outdoor settings with more privacy What to know: Can be more expensive, but very personal and comfortable.
Step 3: Pick a Theme or Style
A theme isn’t just for kids. It helps guide your decoration, food, and even dress code. Choose something that matches the birthday person’s personality.
Easy and Fun Theme Ideas:
Tropical beach party, garden picnic, boho chic or rustic outdoor vibe, classic birthday with balloons and pastel colors, Arabian Nights (great for desert parties), movie night under the stars.
Step 4: Plan the Food and Drinks
Food is one of the most important parts of any party. Whether you go with catering or bring your own, keep it simple and tasty.
Food Options for Outdoor Parties:
BBQ or grill setup in parks or villas, food trucks or live cooking stations, finger foods, sandwiches, snacks, birthday cake and cupcakes, water, juices, soft drinks, and mocktails. Tip: For beach or park parties, make sure to bring coolers to keep drinks cold.
Step 5: Don’t Forget the Decorations
Outdoor spaces often look beautiful on their own, but a few simple decorations can make them feel even more festive.
Decoration Ideas That Don’t Break the Bank:
Balloons, streamers, and birthday banners, tablecloths and matching tableware, fairy lights or lanterns for evening parties, picnic-style blankets and cushions, themed backdrops for photos. Tip: Choose decorations that are easy to set up and won’t blow away in the wind.
Step 6: Plan Fun Activities and Entertainment
Think about the age group of your guests and choose activities that everyone will enjoy.
For Kids:
Face painting, clown or magician, bouncy castles or games, treasure hunts or relay races.
For Teens and Adults:
Live music or a DJ, photo booth, dance floor, board games or group trivia, fire pit or marshmallow roasting in villas or desert settings.
Step 7: Prepare for the Weather
While Dubai has great weather most of the year, it’s always smart to be ready.
Weather Tips:
If planning in summer, choose early morning or evening hours, rent umbrellas or tents for shade, have fans or coolers if needed, for winter evenings, bring light jackets or provide blankets.
How to Make Your Outdoor Birthday Party Feel Extra Special
Personal Touches Go a Long Way
You don’t need a huge budget to make your party feel amazing. Adding small personal touches like custom name signs, favorite snacks, or a memory wall with photos can make your guests feel appreciated and connected.
Capture the Moments
Hire a photographer, or ask a friend to take photos and videos. Set up a photo spot with props or a simple backdrop. You’ll want to look back and remember the fun.
Keep It Comfortable
Have enough seating, shade, and easy access to washrooms or water. Comfort helps guests enjoy themselves for longer.
What to Ask Before Booking an Outdoor Venue
Before confirming any outdoor location, make sure you ask: Is the venue available on your preferred date and time? What’s included in the rental fee (tables, lights, sound system)? Are there any noise or decoration restrictions? Is there parking available for guests? Is a permit needed (especially for parks or beaches)? Are toilets nearby or on-site?
Sample Budget-Friendly Outdoor Birthday Bash in Dubai
Here’s a simple example of a well-planned, affordable outdoor birthday party: Venue: Zabeel Park (picnic area booking) – AED 200 Guests: 15 Food: Homemade snacks + food delivery – AED 400 Cake: Custom cake – AED 150 Decorations: Balloons, fairy lights, picnic setup – AED 200 Games and music: Bluetooth speaker + lawn games – AED 100 Photos: Friend as photographer – Free Total: Around AED 1,050 (less than AED 70 per person) You can adjust the plan depending on your budget and group size!

What Are the Common Applications of Large Format Print?
In the world of visual marketing and impactful communication, large format print stands out as a powerful tool for businesses, organizations, and event planners. It is designed to capture attention on a large scale, delivering bold, vibrant visuals that can’t be missed. From promotional banners to retail displays, large format print serves a wide range of applications across various industries.
Tumblr media
What Is Large Format Print?
Large format print refers to printing materials that are too large for standard commercial printing presses. These prints are commonly used to produce signage, banners, posters, vehicle wraps, and other oversized promotional materials. The process involves specialized equipment capable of handling wide media rolls and producing high-resolution output on various materials such as vinyl, canvas, fabric, and rigid boards.
Common Applications of Large Format Print
1. Outdoor and Indoor Signage
One of the most common uses of large format print is for signage. Whether it’s outdoor billboards, real estate signs, directional signs, or in-store posters, large format print ensures messages are displayed clearly and attractively. The durability of these prints allows them to withstand outdoor conditions while maintaining color vibrancy and clarity.
2. Trade Show and Exhibition Displays
Trade shows and exhibitions rely heavily on large format print for visual appeal. Display backdrops, pop-up displays, pull-up banners, and tabletop graphics are all produced using large format print technology. These prints are designed to create a professional and engaging environment, helping brands stand out in crowded venues.
3. Retail Point of Sale (POS) Displays
In the retail environment, large format print is widely used for POS displays and promotional graphics. Window displays, hanging banners, floor decals, and wall graphics can influence purchasing decisions by highlighting offers, new arrivals, or seasonal promotions in an eye-catching manner.
4. Vehicle Wraps and Graphics
Vehicle branding is another application of large format print that allows businesses to turn company cars, trucks, and vans into mobile advertisements. Full vehicle wraps, partial wraps, and decals are printed on durable vinyl material to withstand the Australian climate and road conditions.
5. Event Graphics and Banners
Events such as conferences, festivals, and sporting events benefit greatly from large format print. Stage backdrops, sponsor banners, fence wraps, and photo walls help create a cohesive and professional look while amplifying branding and sponsorship visibility.
6. Architectural and Construction Site Signage
Construction sites and architectural projects use large format print for safety signage, project renderings, and development boards. These large displays provide important information, communicate timelines, and display visualizations of the finished projects for public viewing.
7. Posters and Art Reproductions
Artists, photographers, and museums often rely on large format print to create high-quality reproductions of original artworks. Posters, canvas prints, and gallery wraps are produced with incredible detail and color accuracy, making them ideal for exhibitions or retail sales.
8. Wall Murals and Interior Graphics
Corporate offices, restaurants, and public spaces use custom wall murals and large graphics to enhance interiors. Large format print allows designers to create stunning visuals that transform plain walls into vibrant storytelling pieces or branded environments.
Materials Used in Large Format Print
Various materials can be used in large format print, depending on the application:
Vinyl – Ideal for banners, vehicle wraps, and outdoor signs
Canvas – Used for art reproductions and high-end interior graphics
Fabric – Suitable for displays and backdrops
Foam board and corflute – Commonly used for temporary signage and displays
Adhesive-backed films – Perfect for window graphics, wall decals, and floor signage
Benefits of Large Format Print
Visibility: Large-scale prints are impossible to ignore, making them highly effective for promotional and informational purposes.
Customization: Designs can be tailored to specific sizes, shapes, and materials.
Durability: High-quality prints can withstand varying environmental conditions.
Cost-effective: When targeting large audiences, large format print offers excellent return on investment.
Conclusion
The versatility and visual impact of large format print make it an indispensable tool for marketing, branding, and communication across numerous industries. From retail and events to construction and corporate environments, it offers dynamic solutions that leave a lasting impression. By choosing the right material, design, and placement, large format print helps businesses and organizations stand out in an increasingly competitive marketplace.

in case you think that covid is over and vulnerable people aren't wearing masks anymore, or that "everyone who would have died from covid is already dead," consider that the reason you don't see masked people anywhere is because they are all still just as isolated as they were when the pandemic started in 2020.
And then remember that that's largely because everywhere they go, people are unmasked which makes the world unsafe for them.
Wearing a mask in public indoor (and crowded outdoor) spaces by everyone is the only way to slow the spread of covid right now. Wearing a mask makes spaces safer for everyone, especially vulnerable and marginalized groups.
If you're not wearing a mask, you're not neutral, you're an anti-masker. Not masking is eugenics.

I think one of the things I come back to the most re: folks who find masking difficult (understandable! it is not easy!) is how often folks who feel that way (and assuming accessibility) have not done the things that can make it suck a lot less? Like, 1. Does the mask fit? A mask that fits will be significantly more comfortable in most cases. A mask that fits will touch the skin at all of its edges and air shouldn't be able to be felt escaping from the sides. 2. Does the mask accommodate sensory needs where possible? I really dislike when a mask touches my nostrils or my mouth too much. I also don't like rubbery straps that pull my hair, and I also like masks that are easy to pull down or take off. I wear masks that accommodate these things: masks with space inside of them that have fabric straps and that either use a single long strap fed through a loop on the side that can be adjusted (like the unvalved Dräger 1950 which is my default mask) or earloops. There are so many different types of masks! 3. Do I keep masks where I can put one on when I need to? How am I going to be able to mask if I can't easily get to one? I mask in public (in all indoor spaces and outdoors in crowds) so I don't always carry a mask other than the one on my face (if I have a bag with me I do carry extras) but it's highly advisable to have a mask on one's person (either in a purse or pocket or <3 on one's face <3). How can you put one on if you don't have it? If the masks are in the back of a closet at home that is not going to be helpful. Are they somewhere they can be easily grabbed when leaving? Such as near where the housekeys might be? 4. Do you know you can re-wear masks? If they don't get wet you can get like 40 hours of use out of them! I would probably swap if in a particularly high risk situation. etc etc If they only exist in our life as this occasional disruptive thing, of course they are going to feel more disruptive and be harder to incorporate.

re: smoking at a concert discourse
are we all having different conversations?? i have never been in a situation where an indoor concert venue is so small and poorly ventilated that i could detect anyone smoking when farther away than literally right next to them??? are we all talking about different things???
scenarios i have seen in real life:
an indoor concert that cost money to attend. there are occasional clouds of smoke because folks are smoking. it’s unclear what is being smoked because the smoke cannot gather, does not linger, and parties are not engaging in hotboxing behavior. the air is safe for asthmatics, but like all indoor events, it is safer to wear a mask.
an outdoor concert that cost money to attend. there are occasional clouds of smoke as folks light up. it is unclear what is being smoked unless it is by immediate neighbors, because the smoke is not detectable at a distance of more than six feet or so. the air is safe to breathe, however the crowd is dense enough that it is safest to wear a mask.
an outdoor concert which was free to attend. folks smoking are hard to spot because they are choosing to do so at the edge of the crowd in a discreet manner. children play freely without comment on odor or behavior. the air is safe to breathe, however in the mass of the crowd, it is safest to wear a mask to prevent the spread of disease and protect oneself.
a small indoor basement show. this is not a professional venue. i have no idea if i was supposed to pay a cover. folks are spilling out of the windows and doors in piles to smoke, laugh, and tag things. smoke visibly pours out of the space. it’s unclear what anyone is smoking because there is so much of it. the fog machine’s artificial smell barely disguises the meth and crack being smoked. it is nearly impossible to see through the smoke once inside. the singer is coughing through the lyrics and indicating they are about to attempt to surf the crowd. the crowd is moshing so violently that speakers are being lost. this space is not safe for anybody, and that is the goal. wear a mask, or don’t, and stick with your buddy, or don’t. shows like this are about freedom. it is an important part of self love and self care to recognize when a situation or event is not for you. this is clearly not what is being discussed in the bulk of the discourse. i will detail why below.
folks participating in this discourse are swift to point out that the fact that they paid for tickets entitles them to have the experience as they envisioned it. shows where the artist encourages listeners to smoke are an attendee’s responsibility to research. please at least search once if a bob marley show will have folks in the crowd smoking before you buy tickets. this will vary between artists.
concerts and shows which are friendly to mobility aids and are more expensive also tend to be larger shows, or more established shows. i feel that certain types of disability are being omitted from this conversation, and am pointing out the overlap between disabled folks against public consumption VS disabled folks in favor of public consumption. conflicting needs are more complicated than this single issue, and acting like this single issue can be meaningfully discussed outside of the greater context of disabled liberation is, in my opinion, misunderstanding the issue in favor of supporting the status quo. asthmatic folks, folks with chronic pain, addicts, and laymen who use, are not binary catagories which are separate from one another.
folks who have paid money to attend an established show may be unfortunate enough to attend a venue which has failed to comply with modern safety standards regarding ventilation. personally i believe that the fault of these kinds of oversight falls upon the owners of the building and the regulatory staff who enforces building codes. the fault of an unsafe venue never lies on a random attendee of the venue.
folks who are anarchistic in values and want their peers to bear some responsibility for their personal safety are valid.
due to conflicting needs of accessibility (ex: someone with chronic pain and stomach issues preventing oral medication may require regular doses of marijuana in order to navigate a standing-only venue which does not allow mobility aids due to the tripping hazard mobility aids present)(vs: folks with lung and breathing sensitivities not being adequately protected by modern ventilation standards) multiple parties must either
flag their own disabilities and required accommodations readily, obviously, and constantly to ensure every stranger in their vicinity is aware of them
be open and willing to communicate with offending parties (ex: “hey, i don’t mind if you smoke, but i have asthma so can you guys please blow it the other way? im going to put on my mask now, no hard feelings.”)
but we’ve already seen the conversation shift to “when im autistic and asthmatic then i am exempt from communication” and i feel like that attitude is defeatist. we are a community of fellows, and i do not believe any of us want to harm others. as difficult as it is due to trauma and disability, imperfect communication is better than no communication, so the attempt must be made. it is empowering to recover from trauma enough to be resilient and respectful, even when the other party is failing to give you that same grace.
if you’re at a concert and you ask someone not to smoke next to you, and they scoff or ridicule and then blow smoke in your face? that person was an ass hole, and you can rest validated and vindicated that that person was an ass hole. you also need to have adequate accessibility aids, and if your disability impairs your breathing, it is vital to your safety to maintain access to those aids.
most people are kind and good, but some folks are having a bad day, a bad month, or a bad year. being prepared and comfortable navigating asshole behavior is necessary to maintaining a free world. holding boundaries to protect yourself from asshole behavior is vital to maintaining a free world.
idk this is like the tenth time this shit has crossed my dash. stay safe. i love you
