~
Alexa’s stomach rumbled and a moment later the sound was echoed by a deep rumbling of thunder in the distance. She paused in her counting and glanced up at the ever-darkening sky. Hurriedly stashing everything into her violin case, she left the square she’d been performing in and made for a gazebo she remembered seeing just down the road. It certainly wouldn’t be perfect cover but it would be better than being soaked to the bone... again.
A gust of chilly air swept through as she hopped up onto one of the tables and pulled her thin cloak around her shoulders. Coins jangled as she pulled them from her violin case, counted them, and dropped them into a little purse. The sky rumbled again and the first drops of rain began to fall. She bit her lip, trying to do some mental math. Denvale was a larger city, and her performance had gotten her a bit more coin than usual, but… this was a larger city, and she knew everything would cost more. She was sure she had enough money for food, and might have enough for a night in a proper inn, but she wasn’t sure she had enough for both. Should she go for the food? Should she go for the inn? Could she try to talk her way into getting one for free?
“Excuse me?”
Alexa glanced up, pulled from her thoughts by a delicate voice. An elven woman approached from the outside of the gazebo, lowering an umbrella as she came under its roof. She had incredibly pale skin and even paler hair and the richest looking clothes Alexa had ever seen in her entire life. Glittering threads embellished the woman’s cloak and robes and she wondered if they were threaded with actual gold and silver.
Alexa said nothing, unsure how she should speak to someone so wealthy and worried that silence was perhaps as rude an option as saying something wrong.
“I apologize for catching you by surprise,” the woman said with a soft smile. “I heard your performance in the square but didn’t have any coin with me at the time. When the weather started to turn I was worried you’d run off for good.”
She held out a hand and Alexa put out her own after a moment. A bright gold coin dropped into her palms and her breath caught in her throat as she looked at it. A gold piece. An entire gold piece. She clutched it close to her chest and looked back up at the woman, expecting her to suddenly realize she’d made a mistake in handing over the gold, expecting her to ask for it back. The woman gave her another smile, before turning to the rain and wind beyond the gazebo with a look of disgust.
“Dreadful weather, this is.” She looked back at Alexa. “Would you like to join me somewhere a bit more dry and warm? There’s a lovely little cafe across the square and I will admit I have something of a… business opportunity I’d like to discuss with you.”
Alexa took in the woman’s appearance again as she focused on the weight of the gold coin still clutched in her hands. Something about the situation made her uneasy. It brought up vague memories of her grandmother’s stories and warnings, though she couldn’t remember exactly what they had been about. Supernatural creatures, mundane thieves and criminals, metaphors for the general dangers of the world, perhaps…
A gust of cold air rushed through the gazebo, bringing icy rain along with it. Unease was overridden by the siren song of a warm cafe and a proper meal and Alexa hopped up, quickly grabbing up her violin case, which she held under her cloak as best she could.
The woman’s umbrella unfurled and she made a noise of surprise as the wind tried to snatch it from her hands. She held it over the both of them as they left the relative shelter of the gazebo and hurried back across the town square. The cafe wasn’t far, but they both ended up wet from the wind blown rain and the puddles on the roads.
A tall firbolg behind the counter looked up as the pair entered and shook rain off their gear in the doorway. The woman raised two fingers and called out, “Two meals and a pot of tea, please.”
The firbolg gave a small nod and disappeared into the kitchen as the woman guided Alexa to a table near the fireplace. Alexa sighed contentedly as she sank into the chair. The cafe was warm and cozy and full of so many wonderful smells. She found it a little surprising that there was only one other patron, before realizing everyone else probably just went home. She shrugged her way out of her cloak and hung it on the back of her chair.
The firbolg brought out their meals and tea just as the woman was doffing her own cloak and propping her umbrella up near the fire. She thanked him and handed over a small amount of coin without bothering to ask how much or count out a specific amount and Alexa wondered if she came here often or was just incredibly free with her spending. The thought brought with it a hint of jealousy that she immediately tried to bury with a mouthful of food.
“This is much better,” the woman said once she’d gotten herself comfortable. She cleared her throat lightly. “Now… I do believe the weather caused us to skip introductions. My name is Fabanise.”
“I’m Alexa.”
“Alexa,” Fabanise repeated. “A pleasure to meet you.”
Alexa nodded. “Did you say something about business before?”
“Ah, yes, yes. After hearing you perform earlier, I must say I am quite intrigued. Where did you learn to play? Did you have a mentor?”
“Um, no. I mean my grandmother taught me the basics but everything else I’ve just kind of… picked up along the way.”
“How long have you been performing? Do you and your grandmother live here?”
Alexa’s spoon plunked down into her soup as she glanced away. “Ah…. no. I… um… I ran away… kind of…”
“Oh… I’m terribly sorry,” Fabanise said. “You don’t need to say more if you don’t want to.”
Alexa shrugged one shoulder. “I thought I could make it big, y’know? But then I didn’t… still haven’t…”
Fabanise reached out a hand and placed it on top of Alexa’s, giving her a gentle smile when she looked up. Her hand gave Alexa’s a little pat before it pulled back again.
“You know, I like to think of myself as a sort of… patron of the arts, let's say. Always on the lookout for talented young folk like yourself who just need a little boost to get them going, get them connected to the right people.”
Alexa blinked in surprise. Surely this was a dream and not actually her real life. Nearly two years of streetcorner performances and barely making enough coin to survive and suddenly… it might be over?
“You…” she started, before trailing off into stunned silence for a moment more. “Are you wanting to be my patron?”
Fabanise shrugged, a curious look on her face. “In a way. I’ll certainly give you funds to start, but more importantly I can give you connections. We introduce you to the right people, drop your name in the right circles, and you’ll find people clamouring to get your attention to play their venues, guaranteed.”
“Really?”
“Really. So… are you interested?”
Alexa nodded eagerly before the little voice in the back of her mind piped up again and she paused. “Is… is there a catch?”
“No catch. No fae tricks either, if that’s what you’re worried about. It may be an… unconventional deal for you, but you’ll be able to read all the terms and change them if you wish.” Fabanise answered as she pulled a parchment scroll and feathered quill from her bag. She unrolled it and started writing - quick, crisp letters in a language Alexa had never seen.
The unease grew in Alexa’s stomach as minutes passed, the relative silence broken only by the occasional crackle of the fire and the rhythmic scratching of Fabinese’s quill on the parchment. After a time she sat straight again, eyes flicking back and forth as she reread her writing. Seemingly satisfied, she turned the parchment around and sat it on the table for Alexa to read. She waved a hand over it and there was a shimmer as the writing changed from the strange alphabet to elegant script in common.
Alexa carefully pulled her hands away from the table and clutched them together on her lap. It was now that one of her grandmother’s stories floated to the forefront of her mind. Not a story warning children of the trickery of the fae, but one of more sinister creatures.
“Are you… are you a devil?” Alexa asked, quietly, not quite looking up at Fabanise.
There was a pause. “I am.”
Alexa bit her lip, now very unsure what to do. For all the various stories she’d been told, not one had ever said what to do if you met a devil. They all just said “don’t” which was far less helpful than it had previously seemed. She glanced up, looking for the firbolg, but he was nowhere to be seen.
“I’m sure I can guess what you’ve been told, but devils are not nearly as nasty as most people think, I promise.”
“Devils steal people’s souls!”
“Not steal. Nothing is ever stolen or taken through tricks or lies. Here, look.” Fabanise gestured at the parchment and used her quill to point sections out as she went. “For you - 500 gold, transport and a month’s lodging in Lehsari, and establishment of a minimum of four professional contacts, starting with the headmaster of the bardic college in Lehsari. Yes, it will be in exchange for your soul but there is no time constraint, which you’ll see noted here, so collection will occur upon death, whenever that happens of its own accord.”
Alexa read along, parsing the flowery language as best she could and it seemed to be exactly what Fabanise said. “But…”
Fabanise waited for Alexa to finish her objection, continuing only when it was clear nothing more was coming. “I promise you that it won’t change who you are. You won’t even notice. All it means is that your soul won’t be sent off into some unknown afterlife to be scooped up by some unknown entity.”
Indecision ate at Alexa’s mind and she felt like she was being pulled apart. Everything she’d been told as a child screamed at her to run - that this was some terrible trick to trap her in an awful fate. The rest of her was remembering the cold, hungry nights on the road and in town. Trying to find somewhere safe to sleep, trying to find someone who would take her to a new city without trying to rob her along the way.
“Can I have… a thousand gold?” she asked, hesitantly, trying to ignore the voice that told her to leave.
Fabanise laughed quietly as she pulled the parchment back and began making the amendment. “Of course you can.”
“And a horse.”
“Is that all?” she asked, pushing the text around with another magical shimmer and adding in the new condition.
Alexa gave one small nod. Fabanise spun the parchment around one more time, laying the quill down on top of it. “Read through it again if you’d like and then sign at the bottom please. There’s no ink required, but you may feel a slight sting in your hand.”
Slowly, feeling caught somewhere between terror and giddiness, Alexa grabbed the quill. She scanned through the document, trying to read it carefully but not really processing it through the cloud of conflicting emotions. She reached the end, saw the line and hesitated one last time as she lowered the quill to it.
One last chance to run away.
The quill hit the parchment and she felt a small stab in her palm as she started to sign. The dark red ink of her shaky signature glistened in the firelight as she let the quill drop from her hand with a nervous giggle. She looked at her palm where she’d felt the pain but saw no mark or cut.
“Marvelous,” Fabanise said as she collected the scroll and the quill. “We can make for Lehsari as soon as you’re ready.”
Now that the moment had passed, Alexa found herself more and more excited by the idea of gold and recognition and not having to sleep outside. She opened her violin case, double checking she had the few possessions she owned. That done, she closed it and looked up at Fabanise.
“I’m ready.”

The view was breathtaking. Allura had been here before, but it had been ages ago, and right now, standing on the balcony of Lotor’s penthouse, overlooking the lights of the city spread out below them, a faint breeze ruffling her hair, she felt a renewed sense of awe and duty. She wanted to protect this city, the only home she’d ever known, the only home left to her in all the universe.
She sighed. “I could stay up here forever.”
“You could,” Lotor’s voice said as he nudged her arm. She turned to look at him and then down at the flute of champagne he was offering.
“Thank you,” as she accepted the glass, “but I couldn’t. Not really.” She sipped the champagne. It was, of course, excellent; Lotor’s tastes were simple: only the best.
“You could,” he insisted gently. “Or at least come visit it as often as you pleased.”
She sighed again - far less contentedly - and turned away from the view to choose a seat. This was the part of the evening she wasn’t looking forward to.
They’d gone out for a very nice - and scandalously-priced - dinner at a trendy French restaurant with a waiting list for reservations that was over a year long. The food was delicious, but it made her miss the simple elegance of Hunk’s food truck, where everything on the menu was as good, if not better, than this but somehow made with a love you could taste.
Lotor ate and paid as casually as if he were at McDonald’s, then brought her back to his place. There was little question this was a date... in his eyes, at least.
Because he was her friend, but she couldn’t help noticing all the Galra connections to everything she and... Paladin had been working on from the very beginning, from that very first night she met him in the warehouse. And she was determined to either exonerate Lotor entirely or else find the proof to lock him away for good.
As his friend, it was the least she could do. On both counts.
But that meant more time around Lotor, more time in close proximity to him and his belongings, knowing more about his comings and goings. And that meant...
She drank more of her champagne. “I have to confess something to you.”
“Oooh?” He slid into the loveseat next to her. “Have you been naughty, Allura? Do tell.”
“Stop it,” she said, laughing a little and shoving him lightly. “This is difficult; let me get through this.”
“Fine, fine. Go on.” He drank his champagne to quiet himself.
She took a deep breath and exhaled. It was difficult, but not for the reasons she was about to lead him to believe. “I had ulterior motives for agreeing to come out with you tonight.”
His eyebrows went up, but he said nothing.
She stared into her half-empty champagne flute. “It’s been months now since... the break-up. You know that. And I thought that... that maybe I needed a push to get out. To try something new. Maybe... maybe to try someone new.”
“Go on,” he urged quietly. It didn’t escape her notice that he scooted in a little closer.
“I don’t know if I’m ready, but I’d... like to be. I’d like to at least try. And you’ve been my friend, my constant companion, looking out for me these last few months.”
“What are friends for?”
She nodded, still not looking at him. “It’s been a marvelous evening and I’ve had a lot of fun.” That was, perhaps, a stretch, but it was mostly true. “I know that you’ve wanted more from our relationship for a long time, but I don’t know if... I mean, perhaps you’ve given up on...”
His hand appeared over one of hers. “I’d never give up on you, Allura.”
She looked to his face. “Why? You have the daughters of the wealthy and powerful throwing themselves at your feet.”
“Wealth is irrelevant and power... power is about what you do with it,” he told her. “You are worth more to me than all the wealth and power in the world.”
She couldn’t help blushing. It was a heavy compliment, but from Lotor it was as casually thrown out as the cash he’d paid for dinner with.
She looked into his eyes, searching them as if she could find evidence of his innocence or guilt in his gaze. “We have to go slow. I’m still so unsure...”
He nodded. “As slow as you want, Allura.”
She nodded in reply. “Okay.”
She didn’t lean in, but she also didn’t pull away when he did. She let him kiss her and fought back the tears that sprung to her eyes. She was playing the oldest friend she had, and that hurt enough, but on top of all of that...
He wasn’t him. And the kiss only rammed the truth of it home for her. She missed him so keenly it felt like starvation, and Lotor’s lips weren’t a substitute for Takashi’s. She’d never really thought they would be, but experiencing it now...
It hurt.
She swallowed it down, made herself kiss back, even if only gently. It was probably the most chaste kiss she’d ever had with another person, but Lotor’s eyes were alight when he pulled away from her. He was smiling like a kid on Christmas morning, having caught sight of the obviously bicycle-shaped package under the tree and knowing it had his name on it.
“Thank you,” she said tightly.
“Thank you. You can’t know what a gift you’ve given me.”
She forced a smile. “Perhaps, in time, I’ll begin to understand. But for now, it’s getting a bit chilly...” She’d dressed up for dinner, of course, that favorite sky blue dress of hers, and she tugged her wrap around her as best she could with one hand. It was suitably awkward.
Lotor stood. “I’ll take you home,” he said.
She set the flute aside and rose. “Thank you, Lotor. For everything.” He led her back inside, to the elevator, so they could descend to his surely-awaiting limo.
She didn’t like any part of this, but she meant to get to the bottom of things... one way or another.

A Fortunate Encounter- Doyoung Tattoo Artist! Au
Word count: 6.1k
Genre: Angst/fluff
Plot summary: (Y/N) is from a wealthy family while he works as a tattoo artist. When they cross paths, will they remain strangers or will they find themselves drawn to each other?
A/N: So I got this idea out of the blue and I could really picture it so I hope you guys enjoy! I literally wrote this until 3 in the morning because I was so inspired. I put a lot of work into this scenario and I'm so happy that you guys liked the teaser so much! Hopefully this will be up to par and thank you to everyone who reads my stories once again, I love you all so much(: Let me know if you'd like to see me do more of these long scenarios
Ever since you were little, you had been told what to do- just like everyone else. You had been taught what was considered good and bad and had behaved accordingly. When you misbehaved, you were punished and when you behaved well, you were rewarded. It had been that way all of your life, society acting as a dictator.
Your entourage had taught you what to wear to be considered sophisticated, how to act around others, and so on. Being born into a wealthy family had its advantages, but people expected so much of you- to the point where it exhausted you both mentally and physically at times.
Just like today. You were sitting on a luxurious couch, staring into space and only vaguely making out your frantic mother's silhouette. She rummaged through your closet in search of the perfect outfit for the night. After groans and scoffs of desperation, she finally settled on a black gown. It was gorgeous, just like everything else in the humongous walk-in closet. You couldn't take pride in saying you had exquisite taste in clothes, as your mother was responsible for your wardrobe. The top of the dress was embroidered with lace and the gown pooled at your ankles in an elegant trail.
Your mother was hosting another one of her gatherings and as always, everything had to be perfect. She made some final touches to your look: adding some hue to your cheeks, making sure your hair had enough volume and tying a pearl necklace around your neck so you represented the family's fortune.
Before you knew it, you were descending the stairs with everyone's gaze fixated on your figure. You smiled shyly, introducing yourself to the select few people you actually were acquainted with. The only instructions you had to follow for this kind of event were simple, "Smile and look pretty." That was all that was asked of you. Most nights you were fine with it, but you weren't much in the mood for it all tonight.
You did have one person who always managed to lift your spirits though and he was coming your way.
"(Y/N), as dashing as always."
He kneeled, pressing his lips to your hand. He was wearing a brand new tuxedo, probably custom-made by the family tailor that same day. His red hair was slicked back which gave him a more mature allure despite his young age.
Although it looked like you two were a couple, Taeyong and yourself were merely friends. Both born in rich families, you had bonded over countless mandatory family dinners, golf tournaments, charity events, and more. You had been playful, teasing even at a young age but you grew on each other and matured together. The two of you had the same view of your reality, feeling as though all the money in the world could never guarantee anyone's happiness.
He scanned your face and in an instant knew exactly what was going through your head. He knew you like the back of his hand after all, of course, he would see right through you at a time like this.
"Wanna get out of here?"
It felt like a weight had been lifted off your shoulders. You looked up to the model-like man before you and nodded in approval
"I thought you'd never ask."
He took your hand in his and dragged you along to the exit, in an effort to escape people's lingering stares. You giggled and followed in his footsteps until you were met with the cold outside breeze.
You looked up, noticing how endless stars decorated the beautiful night sky. Night had always been your favorite time of day, a time where you didn't have to put on a façade but one where you could feel- something you apparently weren't allowed to do normally.
You lowered your gaze, taking in every detail of your surroundings. You had a pretty good view of the city from this high up. You observed the row of Victorian houses in the distance and tried to fathom from afar what normal life was like.
"You wanna go?" Taeyong asked, motioning to the town before the two of you.
You nodded with a smile on your face.
"I often wonder what it's like to live in this part of town."
Taeyong muttered, hands in his pockets as you walked the streets of the quaint town.
"Me too, Tae. It seems other-worldly even."
He nodded his head, agreeing with you silently. The shops around you were all closed at this time of night and you sighed, feeling like you needed a spoonful of reality. The walk was silent but not in an uncomfortable kind of way, both parties lost in thought. A ringing sound broke the calm atmosphere.
"Baby, what's up?" Taeyong answered. "Wait- right now? Okay, okay, I'm on my way. Be there in a few."
His gaze shifted towards you, a helpless look draped over his delicate features.
"It's okay, go. I'll be fine."
"Thanks, I'll make it up to you."
He hugged you briefly before going back to his car. Girlfriend emergency, you figured. You couldn't blame him for having a girlfriend, you were actually happy for him. It sucked that he didn't spend as much time with you as before, but you understood. Although sometimes, you wished you had a special someone to share everything with as well.
You kept on walking down the usually jampacked street, taking the time to admire the charm of each little boutique. It was getting chilly out, but you didn't mind. A certain shop caught your eye, as it was the only one with lights still on at this hour. You picked up your pace until you were standing in front of it. Your eyes were met with a neon sign reading Black Lotus Tattoos. Your gaze immediately drifted inside the shop, checking out the place from where you were standing. It was pretty empty, but it seemed like it would be a lively place typically.
Your eyes landed on one tattoo artist tending to a client. His black hair was pushed back in a failed attempt to keep it out of his face. Tattoos adorned his arms, each one more fascinating than the previous. You had never seen anyone with tattoos before, but somehow you knew you wouldn't be seeing the last of this man. He seemed so enthralled in his work, his eyes squinting in concentration.
You must've been staring at him for quite some time because he had just finished his client's tattoo by the time you snapped out of your daydreaming. They were most, fortunately, discussing something funny since a big smile made its way to the mysterious tattooer's face. Your breath hitched in your throat at the sight. You had never seen someone so handsome, and that was saying a lot considering the people you were constantly around.
Before you could protest, your feet led you inside.
"Can I help you?"
He quirked one of his eyebrows at you, silently judging your choice of attire for this kind of place.
"Are you gonna say something or is that something stuck-up princesses like you don't know how to do?"
You opened your mouth in shock. You stood there baffled, no one had ever talked to you so rudely before.
"Uh- sorry, I- uh, I'll just leave then. I'm sorry for wasting your time."
You mumbled an apology, too unsettled to say anything else. You bowed your head at him before scurrying out. The boy watched you walk away while shaking his head. Everyone in town knew about the rich families who lived "above" them, in every sense of the word. No one in town could stand those families; they were greedy and hostile which didn't have its place in such a homey village.
Rudeness was not something you were familiar with. Your family's influence and power were intimidating enough for people to think twice about their actions. Yet, this particular guy did not care at all. And secretly, you admired that about him because "not caring" wasn't even an option for you in the world you lived in.
You didn't return to the shop until weeks later, too anxious to confront what scared you most: normality. We were all scared of the unknown after all. You also feared the handsome tattoo artist's smoldering gaze. But your curiosity had gotten the best of you so you decided to go back- for a reason this time. And yes - you guessed it - you had decided to get a tattoo. You had already done your fair share of research online so you knew precisely what you were getting yourself into - you had read enough worst-case scenarios to know how to take care of the new addition to your body.
You ransacked your entire closet in search of any regular clothes. Your mom didn't let you keep many "poor people clothes" as she called them, in a firm belief that you had to reflect what you were (more like how much money you had) in every aspect of your life. You finally came across a pale green sweater and worn-out shorts but decided that they would do regardless. You slipped into your favorite pair of boots (which your mom never let you wear) and grabbed a backpack before heading out.
The shop was within walking distance, but it was still a long walk. You hummed as you walked, finding the weather to be especially pleasant today.
You took a deep breath before entering the shop. A faint part of you wanted him to have the day off, but there he was in all his glory. His smile faded when he saw you, excusing himself from the conversation he was currently having. He would be lying to himself if he said he didn't find you beautiful, but he wasn't about to tell you that.
"Well, well, look who has returned."
You caught a glimpse of his name tag. Doyoung was his name. It suited him, you thought. You took a deep breath to gather your thoughts.
"Look, I didn't come here to cause you any trouble. I know people like me aren't particularly welcome here but I just want a tattoo. And I have a name you know, it's (Y/N)."
"Fine, then. Anything in mind?"
You browsed through their catalog for a few minutes, Doyoung growing impatient by the minute. You made your way over to Doyoung shortly with the binder still in hand.
"I want this rose on my left ankle. And this wave on the right side of my ribcage. Can you do that?"
He widened his eyes.
"Of course I can do it." He scoffed, "Any color you wanna add?"
"No thank you, just black will do."
He laughed at your politeness, something he wasn't used to in his line of work. He came back a few moments later with the necessary equipment in his hands. He prepped his station while you looked around nervously. You knew it would hurt at least a little - or like hell if you trusted what people said on Yahoo! -, but you were still scared. You had never been too keen on anything requiring needles and you were doubting your decision to come here just a little.
Doyoung motioned for you to get closer and you approached hesitantly. You were shaking, your heart beating out of your chest. You positioned yourself on the chair, shifting uncomfortably now and again.
"Can you stop fidgeting please?"
He looked at you with annoyance clear in his eyes.
"Sorry. Uh- is this going to hurt a lot?"
You muttered. A small smile tugged at his lips as he understood what was going on. It wasn't the first time a client was scared of the pain the needle would inflict.
"It'll be over before you know it, I promise."
It felt weird for kind words to leave his mouth, but you just nodded frantically in response. You were anxious to get this over with. To think you'd go to these lengths just to see him again. He got to work, placing a hand on your waist to steady himself while he worked. Goosebumps formed on your waist at the spot. You had never reacted that way to a guy's touch but shrugged it off regardless. It was probably the nerves talking.
He was right, it was over before you knew it. He handed you a mirror, showing you the results. You smiled in delight. Even if they were small and discreet tattoos, they still caught the eye which was exactly what you were going for. You made your way to the cashier happily.
You had one thing left to do before leaving. You spotted Doyoung and walked over to him, successfully capturing his attention.
"Listen, uh, I know you think I'm just a spoiled brat and what I'm about to do probably won't help change your mind, but I just hope you can see that I'm far from being one. I don't especially like living in luxury, for what it's worth."
With that, you shoved a hundred-dollar bill in his pocket and walked away. Doyoung stood there in shock. He had always thought negatively about the upper class, but maybe you were actually one of the good ones.
Your parents never noticed the addition of ink to your body, much to your relief. You didn't regret it, but they would make sure you did if they ever found out. You were currently enjoying some much needed alone time when you heard a knock at your door. Weird, you thought. People didn't usually knock since it was such a big house- who would hear it? You hurried to open it, your jaw dropping when you saw the person before you.
"Doyoung, what are you-"
"I wanted to apologize for acting like such a jerk. You didn't do anything to deserve that, and I'm sorry. Do you think we can start over?"
You were too stunned to speak. It took your brain a few moments to function properly again.
"Sure. It's okay, don't worry. Happens all the time."
"Let me make it up to you, over coffee maybe?"
He took you by surprise once again and you accepted the offer. You invited him in since you had to change out of your pajamas. You tied your hair in a high ponytail, putting together an outfit in record time.
You found Doyoung admiring a painting hung in your living room.
"It's an original. Do you like art?"
"I'm an artist, of course, I do." He laughed, making you laugh as well.
He brought you to his favorite coffee shop and you had to agree with him. The place was remote, but the moment you stepped in you were met with friendly faces and delicious aromas. Your coffee tasted amazing and you could tell by the taste that the owners ground their own coffee beans.
"By the way, how did you know where I lived?" You asked, the question having been on your mind ever since he crossed the threshold.
"It's a small town. Plus, there aren't a lot of houses up there."
Your lips curled up into a smile at the thought of the young man asking around about you. You made conversation for a little while, going through the basics. What your childhood was like, what school you went to, your major in college and your favorite things in life. And then came the inevitable question.
"What's it like to be rich?" He asked with hesitance laced in his voice.
He didn't expect to hear that it was so lonely and demanding, that was for sure. He listened to you carefully, hanging on to your every word. And that's how it was for a few hours. You got to know the mysterious tattoo artist who was actually studying to make his dream a reality. Opening an art gallery, becoming a renowned artist. Doyoung had ambition, something you lacked yourself. Working as a tattoo artist made his artistic juices flow in the meantime, you learned.
You actually had a lot in common with Doyoung, despite coming from two completely different backgrounds. You enjoyed his company so much that you found yourself pouting as he walked you home.
You came to a halt when you faced your doorstep. You exchanged phone numbers before he bid you goodbye, waving from where he stood.
Laying on your bed, you recalled your time with Doyoung. It was the first time you had hung out with someone from the "outside world" in a while and you were happy you two got off to a good start. Maybe a normal friendship was what you needed in your life right now. You smiled to yourself, playing with your hair absentmindedly until fingers poked your side repetitively.
"Hey, what's up with you? In love or something?"
Taeyong rolled his eyes, abandoning the idea of you ever listening to what he was trying to say beforehand.
"No, nothing like that. I've just made a friend, a normal one."
"Oooh, tell me about her then!"
"Him, actually. His name's Doyoung and he works at a tattoo shop on the street we walked together that one time."
"Oh, I see how it is. You've got the hots for him."
Taeyong teased.
"I do not!"
"Liar."
You chased after him, set on making him think twice about teasing you.
You saw Doyoung again a few days later, this time for a meal at some local restaurant. The more you got to know him, the more you realized that despite his cold exterior, he was a really sweet guy.
"Is it hard to have friends in your situation?"
His question took you by surprise, it wasn't often that people asked you about your feelings.
"Well, yes since I don't go to school, but I do have a best friend whom I share everything with. He's kinda all I've got."
You laughed lightly.
"Nonsense, you've got me too now."
He winked playfully, making your heart stop for a nanosecond. His beauty never ceased to unsettle you in the subtlest of ways.
Hanging out with Doyoung soon became a regular thing. You shared the same passion for music as well as art, and so much more. You had never been this close to someone who your parents didn't "approve" of and it honestly felt refreshing. You'd visit him at the tattoo shop often and admire his passion for his work from a distance. Whenever he had a day off, you would see each other whether it be for a walk in the park, going to the movies, or chilling at his place. You had grown quite close in those weeks and so, you figured it was about time that your two favorite people met.
So here you were in Taeyong and Doyoung's company, talking about this and that. They had hit it off from the getgo, both noticing the antique car parked in the driveway of the café. Apparently, it was one of a kind. You had proceeded to find a table while Doyoung took care of ordering the drinks for everyone. Taeyong had leaned over and whispered in your ear.
"I like him."
You had talked for hours and shared countless anecdotes (most of which were embarrassing for yourself). You were happy that the two most important guys in your life got along, you would even go as far as to say that it was a relief.
The next Saturday, your parents decided to host a charity event to raise awareness for one of the same old causes: helping the poor, protecting the environment, making the world a better place allegedly. You weren't too psyched about it, especially since you didn't think your folks would let you invite Doyoung given the importance of the event. You had still tried, though.
"Mom, can I talk to you for a second?"
"What is it? I have a lot to do, make it quick."
"Uh, can I have a plus one for the event?"
"Yeah, sure, whatever. Make sure to share the dress code, I can't have anyone looking homeless."
She shivered at the thought. She was too busy to pay attention to you, as always. Her agreeing was not something you expected, though. You invited Doyoung nonetheless to which he confirmed mere minutes later. You smiled thinking about how full of surprises the day had revealed itself to be.
Said guest arrived a few hours before the official time, wanting to spend some time with you beforehand. He showed up in a fitted tux, his sleeves rolled up so the average person could catch a glimpse of his numerous tattoos.
"Earth to (Y/N). Hello?"
You hadn't realized you were staring until he waved a hand in front of your face. You felt a blush creep to your cheeks and just smiled to disguise it.
You laid next to Doyoung on your king-sized bed, staring at the ceiling mindlessly. Your eyelids were starting to droop before Doyoung spoke up.
"You know, before I met you, I thought all rich people were the same. Brats, greedy, arrogant. But you've proven me wrong and I'm honestly happy you did."
"Wow, where is this coming from?"
You answered, trying to mask your giddiness.
"I don't know, I'm just glad I met you I guess."
"You guess, huh? How convincing."
You laughed. He rolled his eyes, used to your behavior by now. A maid entered the room shortly after as if to make sure that your happiness was short-lived. She handed you the dress you were going to wear for the night. It was a sparkly one this time, with Valentino written all over it- figuratively speaking.
Doyoung waited downstairs while you got ready, recognizing Taeyong in the foyer. He approached the young man and the pair exchanged a polite greeting.
"I know we get along and all, but if you hurt her, I swear I'll kill you."
Doyoung's brows knitted in confusion.
"What-"
Before he could finish his sentence, his gaze was directed elsewhere. You were now standing right in front of the two boys in your carefully-selected Valentino dress.
"What are we talking about?"
You looked at the both of them inquisitively.
"You look beautiful, (Y/N)."
The comment left Doyoung's mouth almost without him realizing it. You blushed at the comment. You uttered a faint "thank you" under your breath.
People started arriving shortly after, filling your house to capacity. You had greeted some people, but couldn't for the life of you find the hosts. Precisely at that moment, the lights turned off all at once and music started playing. A spotlight lit up the area where they were standing, waiting for everyone's attention to be redirected to them. Of course, they were going to make a grand entrance, you thought.
After a useless speech on how it was important to give back to the community - because everyone knew that the rich only attended these events to feel good about themselves -, you made your way over to the waiter whisking away a flute of champagne.
A hand grabbed your arm forcefully, almost making you drop your glass.
"Who the hell is that, (Y/N) (Y/L/N)?"
Your mother stood in fury before you, pointing to where Doyoung was sitting.
"My plus one, his name is-"
"I don't care what his name is, young lady! I will not let you disgrace this family. Tell him to leave and you are never to see him again after that."
"But Mom-"
"No! Or you go with him."
You were taken aback by her cruel words. Would she really disown you just because you were friends with a commoner? You knew your mother cared about her image, but this was crossing the line. And it wasn't the first time that she had been this mean to you, which only added fuel to the flame. Regardless, you were too upset to stay in the same room with her.
You tugged at Doyoung's arm who understood by your facial expression that something had gone haywire. He let you drag him out of there, walking until you felt like you were far enough from that house and everything it represented. You halted and tears started forming in your eyes, your hand moving to cover your mouth as you exploded in sobs. Doyoung pulled you against him, caressing your hair as you cried it all out.
It took you a while to get back to your senses, wiping your eyes in an attempt to stop the tears.
"My mom's horrible, Doyoung. She threatened to disown me if I didn't kick you out."
He thought for a moment to process what you had just said.
"Why didn't you though?" He frowned in confusion.
"Why didn't I what?"
"Kick me out."
"You're my friend, I would never do something like that to someone I care about. Unlike my mother."
You looked down, feeling the tears form in the corner of your eyes once more. Seeing this, Doyoung brought you in for a hug.
"It's okay, I'm here."
He rested his head on top of yours, giving you all the time you needed. You broke away from the hug as you felt the tears come to a stop. His thumb wiped the remainder of your tears away and he smiled, still cupping your face. Staring into his eyes, you felt safe.
"Doyoung, do you mind if I sleep over at your place tonight? I don't really want to go back there."
"Of course."
He took off his jacket and draped it across your shoulders, holding you against him while you walked towards his car. The small gesture made your heart flutter for some reason.
You were exhausted when you arrived at your destination. Crying was very draining, both for the mind and the body, you concluded. You began walking towards the couch when Doyoung took ahold of your wrist to stop you.
"No, no, no, I'll take the couch. You can take my bed tonight."
"But-"
"There's always a but with you, isn't there? You don't need to worry tonight, okay? Just take my bed and sleep it off."
He smiled, trying to lighten the mood.
You mirrored the action, nodding in defeat. He handed you some of his clothes to sleep in. You changed and hopped into bed, wanting nothing more than to relish in the comfort of a warm bed.
You tossed and turned for a while, feeling quite guilty about stealing his bed away from him. You wrapped yourself in a blanket and walked over to where he was supposedly sleeping.
"Doyoung."
"Hmmm?"
He opened an eye.
"There's enough room in your bed for the both of us, come on."
He mumbled something under his breath. You could only make out "Bed, for, you".
"I know you'll wake up with a sore back if you sleep on the couch, Doyoung."
He groaned because he knew you were right. You put a pillow between the two of you and fell asleep in a heartbeat.
The sun rays shone through the curtains, making you squint your eyes. You woke up with heavy eyelids, still feeling quite tired. Your head fell to the side, expecting to land on a pillow- which did not happen to be the case. Your eyes widened when you saw the position you were in. Doyoung was sleeping on his back, an arm wrapped securely around your waist. Your head was on his chest and your legs were entangled with his. Oh god, you thought. How were you going to explain this? Did friends even cuddle? A thousand questions starting running through your head before you decided to do something about it.
You got up, limb by limb so you wouldn't wake him and tiptoed to the kitchen. You decided to make breakfast as a way to repay him for being there for you the day before.
Doyoung woke up while you were preparing the pancake mix, smelling the food from his bed. He looked over to where you had previously been, smirking as he remembered how you had cuddled up to him in the middle of the night.
"Something smells good."
You jumped in surprise, not expecting to see him there.
"I sure hope so, I'm making pancakes."
"Breakfast is the most important meal of the day apparently."
He chuckled, taking a seat at the counter. You finished making breakfast and the both of you enjoyed it in silence. He made a few comments about the food here and there, making you blush in the process. You had never been one to get flustered easily, but you found yourself blushing often when you were with him.
You decided to go back home, even if you weren't ready to confront your mother just yet. You had probably made everyone worry, something you had never taken pleasure in. You thanked Doyoung for everything again, giving him a hug before leaving.
You took a deep breath as you stood before the familiar surroundings. You had never really found any comfort in the mansion you lived in, the place was never a home to you despite having lived there all your life. Any minute now, you would have to face your mother's wrath and saying you were dreading it would clearly be an understatement. You hated her outbursts, but most importantly, you hated that you could never stand up for yourself.
The door swung open, revealing one of your nervous maids. She sighed in relief when she saw you- having had to deal with your ballistic mother for the last 24 hours. You apologized for your absence, knowing it must've been hard for the poor maid to calm your lunatic of a mother. You gathered all your courage and spoke up so your voice resonated in the empty foyer.
"I'm home."
Your father was probably at work by now, but you knew for a fact that your mother would be home. She didn't have a job, so she basked in her luxurious surroundings day after day. She planned events now and again, but it wasn't like there were a lot of them to be held. It must get boring to stay home and do nothing every day, you thought suddenly feeling a sort of empathy towards your mother.
She wrapped her silk robe around her slim figure before making her way to the foyer. She had too much pride to admit that she had missed her daughter, especially after what she had done. Honor was of utmost importance, especially when it came to your family.
"You have no idea how disappointed I am with you, (Y/N). First, you disrespect your family by bringing a hobo into our home, and then you go and run off with him. What do you think that says about our family? Do you know how humiliated I was? I had to come up with an excuse on the spot again and frankly, I am tired of having to do that for you! "
She was still mad, as predicted. She seemed more resigned than the previous day though.
"You know what mom? Screw that. You don't have to care about what I do all the time, isn't that what freedom is all about? Oh wait, I don't have any! No one cares about our stupid family reputation but you. We're respectable enough as is, we don't need to justify our every move. And you know why you care so much? Because you have nothing else to do. You don't have anything to occupy your time, you just sit here all day doing who knows what!"
"And now you're talking back to your own mother? What has gotten into you!"
You were so engrossed in your argument that none of you heard the door open.
"Is this because of that boy you've been spending time with? What has he said to you? I knew I should've gotten involved sooner, look at what he's done to you! Can't you see that he's a bad influence, just like all the others?"
"Don't you dare pin this on him. This has nothing to do with him and quite frankly, I'm glad I met him."
She gasped, her hand covering her mouth.
"He's made me happier in the last few months than you have in my entire life! Did you think that having me cooped up in this prison that you call a house would make me happy? Well, think again, because I'm not you. I know how desperately you want me to be, but I'm not. To be honest, I don't care what you think of him. I don't need your permission for anything anymore, Mom. And as my mother, you should be happy that I've met someone like him."
"I don't know who you are anymore."
You let out a chuckle, utterly discouraged.
"I'm not gonna apologize for falling in love with him because you know what? I'm not sorry. I'm not sorry that spending time with him has made me notice all the small things in life. I'm not sorry that he's made me feel things I didn't know I could feel. Most importantly, I'm not sorry that he feels more like family than you ever will. If you still want to disown me after this, I'm not stopping you. There's nothing holding me back anymore."
You shook your head in a mixture of pride and sadness. You had stood up to your mother for the first time in your life and yet she still didn't understand.
You had never identified your feelings for Doyoung before that fight, the truth coming out on its own accord. You did notice some details when you were around him like how your heart would beat faster when he touched you, how happy you felt when he was around, and more. You had never realized it was love because truthfully, you had never been in love before.
You left the house as fast as was humanly possible but a hand grabbing your wrist prevented you from doing just that. You turned around, not quite sure who you were expecting, but it certainly wasn't who you were met with. Doyoung stared at you quizzically, his lips parted as though he was still in shock about something. You walked out in a hurry, him trailing behind you.
"How much did you hear?"
"All of it, actually."
"Oh god."
You heard yourself say out loud. You ran your hands through your hair in disbelief. Just when you were sure the day couldn't get any worse, this had to happen. The universe really was out to get you.
"Did you mean it?" He asked.
You pondered the question for a short while. If you agreed, everything would change and probably not for the best. You wanted to deny it so badly, but you owed him the truth.
"Yeah, I did."
You looked down and bit your lip as you waited for him to reject you.
"Good."
You raised your head in confusion.
"Because I'm not sorry that I fell in love with you either."
And with that, he pulled your face towards his in a heated kiss. You moved your lips slowly against his, deepening the kiss. He bit your lip before releasing your lips. You smiled before pulling him in for another kiss. It was slower this time, expressing all the pent-up feelings you've felt for each other all those months. By the time you broke away from each other, the both of you were out of breath.
He held out his hand invitingly which you gladly took. He led you to his car, his hand resting on your thigh as he drove. His touch comforted you and ignited something in you all at once.
You were in his apartment in no time, his lips finding yours again. Your hands found his hair -which was just as soft as you had imagined it to be- and his grabbed your waist firmly. He trailed down, giving your ass a squeeze. You gasped at the new feeling, granting him access to slip his tongue inside your mouth.
He guided you to his room, making you giggle when you knocked over some foreign objects. He closed the door with his foot, leading you to his bed.
"Are you sure about this, baby?"
"Yes."
And that's all it took for Doyoung to show you how he felt about you on a deeper, more intimate level. You wouldn't come to regret the events of that night, quite the opposite actually. You felt things you had never felt before with Doyoung and you knew this was only the beginning.
As you cuddled up to him that night, you were convinced that there was more to family than just the link that bonded people with the same blood together. Family was a feeling. The feeling of being loved and having a home, that's what family was all about. You felt safe and alive with Doyoung. And somehow, he simply felt like home.

Spinach and Pomegranate Raita/Palak Aur Anaar a cool yogurt preparation with nutritious spinach(palak) or greens and pomegranate pearls(anaar).
Here I bring you one of the easiest dish Spinach and Pomegranate Raita, loaded with goodness of iron rich spinach, calcium rich yogurt and antioxidant rich pomegranate.
India meals are wholesome .Most of the meals consists of dal/lentils, dry veggie or curry, rice and chapatis. The main purpose is to include all the food groups for balanced diet.
Yogurt or dahi is one the important part as it helps in digestion of the food. It also cools off the body heat food that comes with spices used in food and is rich in calcium.
Many times only a subzi like Gajar Aloo Meethi ki Subzi or Baigan ka Bhartha with chapati along with plain yogurt or raita is a filling meal.
Yogurt is also known as Curd in India. It should not be confused with cheese curds available in Canada, USA and other countries. Yogurt is one of the best side dish or accompaniment with paranthas, pulao or biryani and raita takes away the brownie points with so many variations in it.
What is Raita
Those who do not know about Raita, it is a kind thick yogurt preparation with fruits or salad veggies like cucumber, mint, carrots, boiled potatoes. A versatile dish that can be prepared in numerous ways and so easy to prepare.
Chilled raita with fruits or salad vegetables or even chickpea puffed balls(Boondi Raita) or noodles is one of the best accompaniment with Indian meals.
When Vanitha from one of my facebook food groups Healthy Wealthy Cuisine suggested the theme #Raita for the fortnight theme, I realized I have hardly any raita dish on the blog, though there are other yogurt based dishes on the blog like Chass(Indian Buttermilk), Ragi Kanji(Buttermilk with Finger Millet), Kadhi Pakodi, Gatte Ki subzi. Only one raita recipe is there Mix.Veg Raita, though it is one dish that I make quite frequently. Will be updating more raita recipes soon.
Do check out Vanitha’s wonderful blog Curry and Vanilla with versatile and easy to understand recipes from Indian to International Cuisines. I like her way of presenting the dishes , so simple and yet elegant.
How to make Spinach and Pomegranate Raita
If you want to know the detailed basics on Ratia, click here on Cucumber and Mint raita recipe.
Spinach and Pomegranate both are rich in nutrients like iron, calcium, antioxidants and minerals. These should be included in regular diets in any preferred form. If your fussy eater refuses to eat spinach or pomegranate, make this yogurt preparation serve them chilled. Trust me everyone will love it.
There are two ways in which you can add Spinach to yogurt.
First one is to blanch spinach leaves, then puree and add to yogurt along with other spices.
Second one is to finely chop spinach leaves, saute with cumin seeds(jeera)/mustard seeds(rai),and add to whisked yogurt. Add finely chopped garlic in winters or if you like garlicky taste .
Any of way you can make it. I prefer the first one for everyday meals and second one when serving to guests.
Yogurt/Curd for Raita should be fresh and it should not have a sour taste.
Consistency of Raita depends on how one likes it. Neither too thick like many dips or tzatziki nor to thin like Chaas (Indian buttermilk).

Now drain the water from spinach completely(squeeze it a bit) and puree it.

For one cup of yogurt, add about 1/4 cup water. Adjust as per your desired consistency.
Before serving mix black salt in yogurt and add pomegranate seeds to it.
I do not add salt just before serving as it yogurt starts getting sour once salt is added to it.
Serve chilled with dish of your choice.
You can also add grated or finely chopped cucumber to it or top it with boondi (deep fried chickpea flour small balls). Boondi is available at all the Indian grocery stores.

Before serving mix black salt in yogurt and add pomegranate seeds to it.
During winter months you can add tadka of Garlic in ghee. Since yogurt has cooling properties many people avoid it during rainy season and winters. Elders back home always avoided yogurt during monsoon and added either garlic tadka or some fresh ginger or ginger powder to diminish it's cooling properties.

BACKGROUND:
Your life is completely planned out for you from the moment you’re born. Becoming an auror wasn’t a part of the original plan.
Chapter One. You’re the youngest child of a senator - Humphrey - and a debutante - Marigold. They name you after your foremothers, a great aunt off one branch of the family tree and a grandmother on the other. Frances Elizabeth Van Doren, but your brothers have always called you Francie and that’s how you’ve chosen to introduce yourself. As the only daughter, you are given only one real purpose; your life goal is to marry - an influential, powerful, wealthy, and most importantly pureblood man.
For that very reason, you’ve lead an easy going and privileged existence. Raised in a gilded mansion set against the shores of Newport, Rhode Island, you have never known what it meant to want. Practically everything had been handed to you, and presented on a silver platter. If you so much as shed a tear then brothers, house elves, governesses and the like all came at your very beck and call to find a way to satisfy whatever desire you had. Spoiled, rotten brat. That’s how you started life.
Chapter Two. It’s hard to believe you’ve ever had a taste of tragedy in your simple and affluent life. At least that’s what everybody thinks. Of course, a few newspapers reported the news and some may be able to recall it, but generally speaking most people don’t know and you have only ever spoke on it with your intimates. The few that exist, anyway. But you remember the headlines, in bold black letters against white. You were young, too young to know death, and it was many years ago… And yet you remember it all as though it were just yesterday. Rumors of international conflict had been brewing for a long time across the Atlantic, and war soon came knocking at the States’ door. Your oldest brother answered the call.
Among the many heartfelt goodbyes, hugs and kisses, one exchange stands out for you - the last thing your oldest brother, JR, had ever said to you. “Don’t let them decide who you’re gonna be, Francie. Go on and pave your own path.” Four months later you will find out he lost his life nobly against dark wizards, and suddenly your simple and straightforward world has been flipped on its head. You learn not too long after that tragedies come in twos, because so soon after JR dies your other brother, Edgar, decides he too must answer the call for heroes across the sea. Edgar will return, about a year later, but he will not return the same. Crippled and struggling with PTSD, he was but a shadow of the humorous and loving young man that left for the front. It was after Edgar’s ill-fated return that you came to a revelation. With the eldest Van Doren child dead and the second eldest son an invalid, the powerful family’s legacy now lay squarely on your shoulders.
A devastating chapter closed on the Van Doren family, and a new one began. This time, it would be about Francie.
Chapter Three. Your family’s tragedies are timed almost perfectly, or perhaps inconveniently, with your early days as a student at Ilvermorny. By your second year, you are the only hope the Van Doren family has of a prosperous future. There’s a cloud at the start of your education, but it quickly disperses as you grow. To everyone’s delight, you are a vision of beauty and refinement. Charming, elegant, sophisticated - everything a pureblood socialite ought to be, and exactly what your parents have been raising you to be. You’re well liked, It’s not hard to gain the favor of most - as the years advance, so does your beauty and wit and before long you have the affection of all your peers. Nobody really even cares that you’re clever and intelligent, and that you’ve taken very well to potions or dueling. Those are just silly little pass times - what matters is how you present yourself to society’s elite, and that’s where you’re winning.
Straight out of school and you’re being paraded at the biggest social events and soirees of the season, the centerpiece to your family’s glamorous facade. So it was no surprise when the news broke just a couple months after graduation that the Van Doren daughter was engaged to the heir of a wealthy family. Arthur Alderidge - rich, influential and pureblood, and with a bright future at MACUSA. It was a match made in heaven, two prominent Newport families joining together in what would be the biggest event of the season. And you’re okay with it. At least, that’s what you told everyone. For the past seven years, there was a voice nagging in the back of your head, one that haunted you in the late hours when everyone was gone and you were alone with your thoughts. JR’s final words, echoing loud and clear in your head. Go on and pave your own path.
The thoughts rooted self doubt in you. All your life, you were being built up to be the perfect pureblood princess. And you were just that - the demure and pretty little thing that everyone adored. But you could see the attention you got for what it was - fake respect from peers who were only interested in your family name. Nobody actually cared about who Francie is - they had decided that for you already. Francie is a vapid and pretty little thing, something to admire on a surface level with no depth. Every opinion of you was superficial, especially that of your future husband. You were to be the shimmering, and submissive, trophy draped on your powerful and important husband’s arm. But you wanted to be so much more than that - you wanted to be someone powerful and important. The only person who saw that potential was confined to a chair, constantly reliving nightmares of the war. Edgar couldn’t remind you of what you could be. For the first time, it was up to you to decide where your life went.
And so you did.
Chapter Four. It was the eve of your nuptials, the day before you’re supposed to commit to being a docile wife. There was never a better time to take charge of your future. It’s through a letter that you say goodbye, though there is little explanation as to why you’re doing this or to where you’re going. You know if you give more than that, then you’ll never be able to turn your back on this life. So you steal away in the middle of the night, packing a few things in a bag and taking out your inheritance. The ticket is one way, and you take the train as far west as it’ll go. That’s how you landed in the Pacific Northwest. It’s gloomy and chilly, and you find out quickly that you like rain. You also find out quickly how hard it is to sustain yourself when your money’s dwindling and you have no source of income to replace it. Growing up is suddenly a challenge that you’re ill equip to take on, until a wanted ad falls onto your lap. It’s as if destiny herself put it there.
Remember, being an auror wasn’t a part of the original plan - neither your parents nor yours. But it would happen regardless.
Chapter Five. Your first exposure is when you take on a secretarial post at the Olympia Academy. It was just meant to be a start, to replenish the funds that were quickly disappearing. Something clicked that first day you were at the academy, watching the new recruits as they began their training for one of the most noble and dangerous professions known to wixenkind. It didn’t take long to realize that this was what your life had been missing - a higher purpose, a bigger focus, a deeper meaning. Your brothers had sacrificed their lives to protect others, so why couldn’t you do the same? That’s how you ended up at the academy a year later, now a pupil. Whispers of daddy’s influence had gone around, mocking and cruel. It didn’t help that you were bottom of the food chain - both socially and academically. But you had gotten here all yourself, and you weren’t about to fail on the first attempt at becoming your own person.
You worked hard, and nobody will tell you otherwise. You hit the books and the training rings, stuck around longer than most and tried to keep ahead of the others. Pretty soon you went from bottom of the ladder to top of the class, and you only continued to grow. You had something to prove to others - that you were capable and that no one could tell you that you couldn’t make it. So you pushed and pushed yourself, going above and beyond. You excelled at nonverbal magic. You expanded your arsenal of offensive and defensive spellwork. You memorized every potion you came across that could someday prove helpful. And you lead a deadly experiment in learning occlumency in order to make your resume more impressive. You tortured yourself, until finally your mind was strong enough to repel the pain and much more. But all you have to show for it is a jagged scar along the left side of your forehead that you hate to admit you are insecure about. It’s a graduation present to yourself that will someday come in handy, and lead you to the next step in your life.
Chapter Six. Lucrative offers make themselves known. Seattle and Portland, Tacoma and Vancouver - their local offices all come knocking at your door, begging you to join their ranks. You choose Tacoma first, because it’s closest, but eventually transfer to Seattle, and work at almost every local office in the Puget Sound, where prestige and fame slowly begins to follow your rise. Nobody in the Pacific Northwest will tell you that you didn’t earn your way here, nor that you aren’t a fine and clever auror. This has become home for you, so it’s with a heavy heart that you accept DC’s offer two years after you leave the academy. For more reasons than one - you’re going to miss the weather and the friends centrally located, but you’re also worried about being so close to home. And for good reason. None too soon after you arrive in DC and an unwelcome visitor arrives at your doorstep. Humphrey Van Doren. Good Old Dad. And with devastating news - Edgar, your beloved brother, had taken his own life. Desperate to ensure his legacy, father comes with an offering - for your old life back. He begged for you to go back, amend things with your former fiancé and take your place as a representative of society.
That was your last tie to your past, a brother who ended his life out of sorrow and torture. And that was the last time you entertained the idea of going back.
You rejected the offer, and officially declared yourself emancipated from the Van Doren family. And then up went your walls and into your work you fell. You worked harder than you ever did before, pushing yourself beyond your very measure. You were done being the socialite with every advantage - that was the last thing you wanted others to see you as. You were your own woman, and you were a damn good auror. And within a short amount of time, you showed that with your first lucrative job. Undercover mission, taking down a Russian mobster and his criminal outfit in Arlington. It caught the attention of many, including a Chief Allen Snow. To hear that the chief of the Eastern Squad was impressed was one thing, to be recommended for an opening on the squad was another. Out of sheer stupidity, or so you thought, you applied. And with dumb luck, you got in.
You’ve been there now for almost a year, and it’s been a bumpy start. Here on an elite squad, you have to earn respect, and you have a long way to go. Much like your academy days, they have opinions here - opinions on how you got there and whether or not you really deserve to be there. You’re nothing but an heiress with a senator for a father who likely bought your way in, but you don’t care about that. You’ve risen above such low expectations before, and you’re capable of doing it again. And you’re desperate to do it again here, to prove to Chief Snow and your fellow aurors that you have every right to be here, playing in the big leagues. You’re always chasing the one case that may finally put to rest all of the low expectations. Anything to show them that you’re more than they will ever know.

There are two main strands to Pau’s past:
In 1553 it was the birthplace of King Henri IV, one of France’s favorite monarchs. Go into the Château de Pau for his back-story and see the turtle shell in which he was cradled like a baby. Other topics could be chosen in the mid-1800s when wealthy Scottish physician Alexander Taylor suggested Pau for its healthy climate. It quickly became a high-heeled British resort, with a racecourse, a golf club, and lavish palaces and hotels. But whatever you do, you have to sit back at the Boulevard des Pyrénées and see those great peaks lined up on the horizon in the Ossau Valley. Discover the best things to do in Pau.
[toc]
1. Château de Pau
King Henri IV was born in this castle on December 8, 1553, and always had a special place in the hearts of the French. He was also the first monarch from the Bourbon House, a lineage that would give France all subsequent kings.
You can’t go self-guided so you will need to join a group if you want to see the interior. Tours are offered in French or Spanish: They lasted for an hour and didn't leave any stones, showing you around a series of luxuriously decorated rooms with ceilings, gilded walls, precious paintings and some of the best goblin rugs. of France.
If language is a problem then there is a brochure with English information. One of the high points is the king’s birthplace, which still has the turtle shell in which he was cradled like an infant.
2. Boulevard des Pyrénées
Paid in the late 19th century, Boulevard des Pyrénées must be one of the most special streets of France. It links the Château de Pau in the west with the Parc Beaumont 800 meters to the east and runs along a terrace at the top of the cliff above the Gave de Pau.
Rearing up In the distance to the south are the peaks of the Pyrenees, as the singular Pic du Midi d’Ossau at the far end of the Ossau Valley that begins right next to Pau. There are slabs along the avenue to tell you what you are looking at.
The boulevard is extremely inspiring for morning jogs and unbelievably romantic when the sun goes down.
3. Funiculaire de Pau
Operating from dawn, until darker than a day in more than a century, the funnel-shaped railway will bring trains up and down a 30% slope between the square of Gare de Pau and Boulevard des Pyrénées. The service has been free since 1978 and trains run every three minutes.
The track is more than 100 meters long, but you'll be happy if you come here by train with heavy luggage, money travelers could have made it in the early 1900s and saw the climb from the arrival station. Boulevard des Pyrénées.
4. Musée des Beaux-Arts
One of the men who thanks for the wonderful assembly of the works at the Pau Fine Arts Museum, is Louis la Caze, who donated 30 large paintings in the 1800s. La Caze has also gone down in history for donating 583 works to the Louvre, which is still the largest museum ever received.
In Pau, there is a group of famous names from the 16th and 17th centuries, such as El Greco, Jacob Jordaens, Zurbaran, Breughel the Elder. Collections of the 19th century were almost entirely in French and contained works by Granet, Boudin, Camille Corot, Eugène Carrière and Edgar Degas.
5. Musée Bernadotte
At the birthplace of Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, this museum relates one of the Napoleonic era’s most fascinating stories. Bernadotte has relatively modest roots, being the son of a prosecutor in Pau.
But in a turbulent period, he overcame the army to become the general and then the Marshal of the Empire, and then to the throne of Sweden. The current Swedish royalty is the descendant of this man.
The house has been kept like a typical Béarnaise house of the times, and with the help of the Swedish royal family, there are paintings, miniatures, porcelain, medals and attractive personal memorial pieces such as letters, telegram, and everyday supplies.
6. Trespoey
Once Alexander Taylor was profitable in the mid-1800s, the bourgeoisie soon descended on Pau as a winter destination.
Many have built their English-style holiday villas in the Trespoey neighborhood a short distance east of the center, and this luxurious green neighborhood is now home to Pau's most upscale hotels.
The tourist office will provide you with a journey of handsome old villas to watch you walk through this leafy area of Pau, also on a ridge and like the Boulevard des Pyrénées with spectacular views of the mountains.
7. Château Quarter
The lanes around the castle are extremely beautiful, with 500-year-old architecture. In the early days, this was all there was to Pau, so it was the oldest part of the city. You can get a leaflet from the tourist office to help point out the most interesting historical features.
The door is a donation; large old carved wooden boards with oddly wrought iron handles. Later, Pau extended east along the Mar Marchchal Joffre street, where elegant palaces were built for nobles.
8. Quartier du Hédas
Located in a low-lying area below Château in the north, this district is named after the stream that once flowed here. It is easy to see which course the Hédas once took because it cut a deep valley through this part of the city.
Bridges such as Pont de Lassansaà and Pont Neuf were built to help develop difficult terrain.
For us, it's just a nice neighborhood to walk, with steep paths and bizarre details like the Tor deu Borrèu on the streets of Rue du Hédas, which belongs to Pau's final executioner, into 1800.
9. Hippodrome du Pont-Long
You might be wondering if you suddenly woke up in 19th-century society at the Pau racecourse.
Béarn region had always had a high reputation for breeding thoroughbred horses, but by the mid-1800s, the equestrian industry had grown with the arrival of wealthy Britons who needed entertainment for their winter holidays.
Hippodrome racing season is still only in the winter when there are 154 hurdles and 62 flat races. If it’s a bit chilly you can watch the action from the warmth of a heated hall with a bar, or over lunch at the panoramic restaurant.
10. Pau Golf Club
Another sign of the transformation that took place in Pau in the mid-19th century: the Pau Golf Club was inaugurated in 1856, making it the oldest golf course in continental Europe, as well as the first golf course. was established outside the UK.
The Scots who came to Pau needed somewhere to indulge their passion, and the club was soon founded in Billère, a couple of kilometers west of Pau. Future stars such as Sergio Garcia and José María Olazábal competed at the French-Espagne Boys Game in February.
If you like around you will need a handicap and the visitor fee is around € 60. There is also a museum recounting the course about the past.

Get the Look: Summer in the Hamptons
Southhampton, East Hampton and other villages along the East End of Long Island make up the go-to summer destination for wealthy New York City and other east coast residents. It’s easy to see why. The area’s Atlantic Ocean vistas, white sand beaches, casually-elegant eateries and rural charm make this a great place to escape the heat, hustle and stress of Manhattan. However, you don’t need to be a New Yorker, or even an American, to enjoy the distinct light-filled, cheerful and sometimes nautical look of summer in the Hamptons.
What is the summer in the Hamptons style?
The summer in the Hamptons style uses the colours of the surrounding countryside, including the blues of the ocean, ranging from pale blue to rich teal. Also included in this palette are the coral of the sunrise and the whites of the sun reflected on the sand.
Furniture and accessories in this design style are simple and functional and include white or cream-painted wooden furniture, rattan chairs with colourful cotton or chintz cushions and streamlined accessories like candles, pottery and throw cushions.
Design pieces to use with the summer in the Hamptons style
Below are a few ideas to help you put together your own summer in the Hamptons-style room. Several of our selections today are from Lexington, a Swedish company which takes its inspiration from the New England style and is named after Lexington, MA, a beautiful historical town of tree-shaded wooden houses just north of Boston.
Settle back
These blue and white printed throw cushions by Lexington are perfect accessories for a summer in the Hamptons-style room. They evoke the look of light reflecting off of the ocean and can be easily moved around the room. They also come in a darker blue version. 50 x 50cm £55 each. They’d look great alongside this cashmere and merino wool herringbone throw from Loaf (£140) fits the summer beachcomber bill perfectly too.
Postcards and memories
This Lennon table lamp from Feather & Black is a great detail to add to any room. Amazingly, the base unscrews meaning you can fill it with anything you like. We’d fill this with old postcards, shells, or interesting pebbles to evoke the seaside look! £80
Turn the tables
This dark blue, stone-washed tablecloth by Lexington is perfect to throw over your table to transform it into an attractive tabletop setting. Use white stoneware dishes and simple crystal glasses to complete the look. £79.
Holiday reading
This painted oak casual bookcase is ideal for storing those beach reads and displaying nautical-style accessories for that beachcomber look. It could even be used as a casual stand-up bar as the shelves can be adjusted to fit bottles of spirits and barware. £ 465.
Another throw
This classic blue-and-white, fringed wool throw (shown right on the bench) is another accessory that’s well-suited to the summer in the Hamptons style. It’s not only useful for keeping warm on those chilly late-summer nights, but adds a dash of colour to a white or cream sofa or upholstered chair. £139.
What could be more summer by the seaside?
Why not add more maritime charm to the bedroom with these playful cushions from Jan Constantine as featured in Rick Stein’s Padstow restaurant. The only question is whether to pick the lobster, the octopus or the compass.
Looking good
