my top 10 floor routines since the 2006 COP!

yes these are completely subjective

no they are not based on difficulty, execution, or like any other quality they’re literally just the floor routines that I watched over and over again bc I loved them

1. Sandra Izbasa, 2008 EF Olympics

man, this routine is why I loved the 2008 code for floor. FIVE PASSES! FIVE! and back then, they got to take a breath in corners. even lunged out of landings. what a time to be alive. #bringback2008COP

I just loved that this routine felt understated yet it was packed with consistently clean, powerful tumbling. and the music is just *chef’s kiss* . a truly deserved olympic gold. 

2. Jiang Yuyuan, 2008 TF Olympics

an under stated star from the 2008 quad! I love Yuyuan’s floor and tbh I miss when Chinese floor was this strong. This routine had the most upbeat, positive energy, and yet exhibited some kick-ass tumbling. I feel like Yuyuan got so overlooked all olympics, and this floor routine is one of many routines that deserved more attention.

3. Anna Pavlova, 2008 FX AA Olympics

okay, I admit it. I miss the 2008 COP. I miss lunging out of passes, I miss 5 passes, I miss decent front tumbling. but above all, I MISS ANNA PAVLOVA’S 2008 FLOOR ROUTINE. this routine was just so pretty, graceful and flowed beautifully. if only she didn’t suffer from a disease known as “chronically underscored/always 4th place”.

what a forgotten gem! so forgotten, no one even gif’d Anna so I had to use a photo instead :( 

For a Russian with [unusually] clean tumbling and twisting and some unique passes, Anna seems to be very much under the radar. I loved this routine for Anna’s pure athleticism; she’s just. so. bouncy. and tidy!

5. Aliya Mustafina, 2010 FX AA Worlds

need I say more? This was SUCH a dominant performance. Aliya’s always been a phenomenal performer, but I think we all forget sometimes that young Aliya was a really, really strong tumbler, twisting form debates aside. and saying “Don’t worry Dad, I can’t lose?” before a meet? 10/10. I need some of that energy in my life.

6. Ksenia Afanasyeva, 2011 FX EF Worlds

SO. PRETTY. This routine just felt so mature and classy in a way we don’t often see in gymnastics, and the tumbling is super strong too. I hate to bandy the word “artistry” around (god knows, it’s been butchered over the past decade) but man, this routine had something very nice about it. 

7. Diana Bulimar, 2012 FX TF

I LOVE THIS ENERGY. Diana wasn’t Romania’s strongest tumbler but she showcased Romania’s (old) strength for tumbling, being 3rd or 4th on their fx lineup yet still packing such a punch. plus, this music just seems to suit her perfectly. 

8. Larisa Iordache, 2013 FX Worlds

I’ve always liked Larisa’s floor work, but this routine felt like where she really grew into her own. I love the music, the dance, and the tumbling is pretty amazing too. this routine is also an A+ example of using dance elements well... and NO wolf turns :)))

9. Mai Murakami, 2013 FX EF Worlds

that this routine DIDN’T medal is still a travesty -_- Mai’s tumbling is just textbook clean and tidy, and for years (YEARS, I TELL YOU) I’d been waiting for her senior debut. with this routine, I really thought she’d cracked it into the medals...

... but if you ask me, the judges seem to have a habit of underscoring Japanese girls, or at least, they did in this quad. but that’s just my spicy opinion. 

10. Flavia Saraiva, 2014 YOG

BEAUTIFUL. STUNNING. Flavia just made the most of this music and choreography. I could watch it for days. this is what dreams are made of.

My top 10 favorite routines/moments of 2018

1. Simone gets her vault named

What else is there to say? Just look at how superbly she does it. It’s one of the hardest ever vaults being performed for the first time, and so cleanly, by the best vaulter there ever was, imo. I feel so lucky to witness her.

2. Tingting becomes beam champion

THE MOMENT WE’VE BEEN WAITING FOR!!! ACTUALLY COMING TRUE!!! AFTER I’D LOST ALL HOPE!!! From nervously waiting to see whether she’d make the final to winning with a great routine 😍

3. Russia winning Euros

Two words: NO FALLS. Still feels surreal that a team with Gelya as the veteran went and got the highest totals in every event, despite placing second in quals. Worlds team final might have been a huge mess but this was one of the most thrilling competitions I’ve watched and it was great to see France and the Netherlands on the podium.

4. Mai getting an AA medal

After the upset of last year, I think pretty much everyone was rooting for her and I’m so happy that it worked out!! The relief after her she finished beam and running to her mom after she won silver were so beautiful and I hope she can continue strong like this 💛

I’m sorry but I can’t not include Aliya in such a list. Everything about how incredible it is coming back after a pregnancy has already been said so I’ll just say that this is the best 5.8 bars routine that has been done I will not be accepting objections.

Who said vault can’t be artistic and beautiful? I was so sad about her ACL injury at Montreal because she really had it in her to possibly win a world title and I was unsure how much she’d be able to recover. And it’s quite a bit!! That’s a phenomenal DTY and Lopez. I don’t know if anyone has done an Amanar after an ACL injury, no matter how good the DTY is I hope she plays it safe.

7. Yilin’s quals at Cottbus

I’m going to be ignoring that she fell in the final in favor of this great routine that qualified her in first place ahead of the world champion.

And now to the world champion herself. I do admit that Nina doesn’t always appeal to me but I still think she deserves praise for how she has been performing routines with top notch difficulty time after time without any major mistakes that I can think of. Certainly a deserved world title.

9. Gelya and Zhang Jin’s world cup AA titles

I remember a post saying how we were celebrating Gelya winning one cup like she had won worlds but considering she went from total unpredictability with being 4th at Stuttgart but winning Brimingham literally 5 days later to narrowly missing worlds medals I like to think of Birmingham as a milestone of a Gelya that has found some semblance of consistency.

And while Gelya was busy hurdling to the middle of the floor bc she still hadn’t ditched the piked full-in and Jordan missing her wolfkino beam magic, Jin emerged as an unexpected winner. She was 6th at Stuttgart the year before and I’m happy to see her (and Luo Huan) finding a solid place as valuable team members this year. China’s problems are glaringly obvious but it’s still nice to see that they can achieve such results.

for vika, I honestly just want her to get an olympic gold medal, for literally anything. it kills me that she doesn’t have one at all, especially cause she could’ve (should’ve) taken AA gold in london, and like had a shot, if everything went right, at team, beam, or bars gold too but missed out on all of those as well. so I really hope she gets to go to 2020 and get a gold medal on SOMETHING because she deserved to do it in 2012. in reality though, we’ve obviously gotta see how her comeback goes and if she’d even be able to factor into the russian team, but i do wanna see her make some major intl assignments, and i wanna see her get her full bars difficulty back at the very least.

my favorite time of day is probably any meal time bc i love to eat lol, but idk in general I like early afternoon best. and aaaaa thank you!!! i’m obsessed with those socks, they’re the symbol of the democratic party but one of my friends told me they kinda look like the symbol of the republican party too and like... shes not wrong especially from a distance lol since the donkeys are super poorly defined. i used to have a TON of themed socks but i’ve lost almost all the pairs lol, i have those art socks that are really popular tho and since i only have one of each i like mix and match them lol.

I was so convinced I’d missed a day but I’ve counted and I don’t think I have haha. So that’s good! Well I’m the same as you tbh, Aliya is my #1 favourite of all time and obviously Simone is a goddess so I’d say those two! That’s such an organised Christmas list! Secret Santa part 2 because I forgot to ask any gymnastics related questions! So we both agree that Simone is on a whole other level, but what’s your favourite routine she’s done/favourite Simone moment? And what were your favourite moments of Rio?

oh yeah i have bad shoulders so i feel you on the memory foam pillow haha, let me know how that works bc i honestly need a new pillow rn but don’t know what i need lol. 

for holiday drinks, i love getting the fun drinks they have at starbucks (although i’m not a big peppermint mocha fan), and i love hot ciders. 

if i could live anywhere... hmmm. my favorite city in the world is washington dc and if i achieve my career goals i’ll have to live there at some point, but also like i really just love it in general because of all the history and culture and the beautiful buildings and the fact that there are so many free museums and monuments, there’s just so much to do and i love it. but i also really want to live somewhere in europe, i would love to live in italy bc my family is italian on both sides and i have (kinda distant) cousins who live in northern italy i would love to connect with. or london, i looooove london and would love to live there.

as for my favorite simone moment, it’s hard to pick just one!! in general i just love her beam, also every time that she’s stuck or even just nearly stuck her amanar it’s just amazing because like that’s sooo difficult. i think my favorite simone moment is at 2013 worlds when she came in 4th on bars even though it was her worst event. iconic.

And ooooo dream skills for certain gymnasts... hmmm. I really want to see simone do a moors cause I feel like she could do it. I also WISH Kennedy Baker would do a Dos Santos II cause her Dos Santos is so high and so open like... obviously doing a dos santos II in ncaa would be so extra but idk I just wanna se SOMEONE do it and I feel like she’s got a strong enough dos santos that it would be possible lol. Also, not a specific dream skill, but I wanna see Larisa Iordache do something unique and like get an eponymous skill since she doesn’t have one yet (that I know of??? pretty sure she doesn’t tho) and she’s my fave sooooooo... yeah.

as for greatest of all time idk tbh!! are we just talking WAG here bc like the greatest gymnast of all time is obviously Kohei but if we’re just talking wag then i’m not sure tbh!! from this era tho i think simone and aliya are both gonna be remembered as like, among the greatest ever, because simone is, well, simone, and aliya has had such a long and successful career on every apparatus and has come back successfully from numerous serious injuries so like. but idk who i think is the greatest of all time bc there are SO many talented gymnasts throughout history and the sport has evolved so much it’s really hard to compare. who are your faves of all time?

my christmas list this year is this specific setting powder (right now I use an elf one and it’s not great lol), a couple books, clothes from my fave stores (dry goods, francescas, nordstrom, free people), and a couple specific wall decorations i found!! :) how about you?

my favorite event is overall is uneven bars, but i also really love good beam routines, but bad beam routines are SO hard to watch and so common so overall i definitely like bars more. by FAR my favorite person to watch on bars is vika. her swing is just so effortless and she’s SO impeccably clean, i love it. i really like fan yilin also, and then of COURSE aliya. also yao jinnan is a favorite of mine, and i really enjoy watching ashton on bars even tho she’s not a fave of mine in general. also i really enjoy watching maile okeefe on bars? idk. unpopular opinion but i’m not a huge fan of he kexin’s jaeger combo thing she does… but i’m gonna give her an honorary mention anyways cause she’s like, flawless

as for beam (bc i like it a lot too and i wanna answer) i love pauline schaefer (worlds this year was fun for me lol), shawn johnson’s beam will always be a favorite of mine, and cata when she hits (im gonna miss her SO much). katelyn ohashi in like 2012/2013 was my absolute fave though. and kyla on beam in both elite and ncaa?? flawless.

my favorite holiday food are these lil almond cookies my mom makes!! idk what they’re called though lol, but they’re tiny and almond flavored and delicious.
