closed starter for @svftlove / ft. alisa

she was exhausted, not physically but mentally. this relationship had been a relentless back-and-forth ride of uncertainty, and she had finally reached her boiling point. she sighed softly, the sound more defeated than angry, as she faced the fact that they had been gone for hours once again without a single word. her patience was worn thin, her mind a tangled mess of doubts and frustrations. she felt a familiar heaviness settle in her chest, the weight of unspoken words and unresolved issues pressing down on her. the silence was deafening, amplifying the turmoil within her after they walked in the door. "where have you been?" she asked, her voice nearly emotionless. she couldn't muster the energy to infuse her words with the hurt and anger she felt. instead, her tone was flat, resigned to hearing yet another excuse instead of the truth she so desperately craved.

Searching for his name in her contacts, she gives it a click without allowing herself to give it a second thought. It’s taken her days to reach this place where she was capable of doing this. Placing the phone to her ear as it began to ring, the beating of her heart picking up rapidly as she waited to hear his voice on the other end. Hoping that he wouldn’t turn down the offer that she proposed.

In an effort to distract herself and maintain the pretense that she didn't have feelings for Caleb, Alisa agreed to go on a date tonight to see where things might lead. Perhaps if she could get involved with someone else, it would help her shift her focus and stop investing so much of herself in a person who didn't seem to have intentions of sticking around for the long term. It wasn't entirely fair to place the blame for their undefined relationship on him; she had been okay with the arrangement at first. However, now that unintended feelings had developed, it was becoming increasingly difficult to continue. Despite this, she found it impossible to extricate herself from Caleb's life; she enjoyed being involved far too much. As Alisa sat across from her date, she tried to give him her full attention, but the topic of conversation was making her want to fall asleep at the table. The number of "yeah," "uh huh," and "mhmm" responses she had uttered in the past twenty minutes should have been a clear signal that she was bored, but he didn't seem to pick up on it.
Reaching for her wine glass, she took a sip, desperately glancing around now and then to see if the waitress was bringing their food yet. Just as she was about to seize the opportunity to steer the conversation in a different direction, she felt her phone vibrate against the table. Offering an apologetic smile to her date, she flipped her phone over and saw that the notifications were from Caleb. Trying to hide the smile that crept onto her lips, she instead bit her lower lip as she read the messages. It was as if he could sense that she was on a date—his timing was always impeccable. "Sorry, one second," she said to her date, her fingers quickly typing away on her phone. The conflicting emotions swirled inside her as she tried to navigate the complexities of her feelings for Caleb and the new date in front of her. She couldn't deny the excitement that Caleb's messages brought, but she also knew she had to find a way to resolve the tangled web of emotions she found herself in.
Text 1: Hello there! I have not. I am waiting on my food to be delievered to me. Text 2: Oooh, Arson? Do tell more. On that note though - are you okay? I know sometimes cases can take a toll on you.
She quickly sent the messages, placing her phone back down on the table and providing her somewhat undivided attention back to the other.

He was famished and Caleb had already finished a bowl of mushroom soup, cleaned the whole plate of steak and breadsticks. 14 hour shifts at the station tend to make him ravenous. And Caleb felt like he deserved some dessert too after the day he had. Just as the waitress left with his order, he caught sight of a couple at the far corner of the restaurant.... Shit.. it can't be. Caleb perked up, blue hues glazed with curiosity as he watched Alisa and a random guy having dinner. She's dating? Caleb didn't know that - well then again, they steered clear away from talks of relationships and dating anyway... In fact there was not much talking when they do rendezvous. They do still talk about any other aspects of their lives outside of sex, Alisa had become someone consistent in his crazy, haphazard life.
He didn't expect jealousy to rear its ugly head - they have had maintained a no strings attached policy, friends with benefit without the pesky emotions. But Caleb didn't give too much thought about the envy he was feeling. The gears in his mischievous mind whirred and a wicked grin had taken over his lips as he fished out his phone. Alisa looked bored and her phone was nearby. Nothing wrong with sending texts to a friend right? Plus she did like it when he tells her crazy facts about his cases, entertain her with the ridiculousness of human nature in his line of work. His fingers flew across the virtual keyboard, texting her:
Text 1: Good evening! Hope you've had dinner :) Text 2: You know I had the most interesting case today. Possible arson. The suspect is still at large.
A small snicker left him as soon as he locked his phone, gaze flicked up to see if Alisa would respond. Come on, come on, take the bait.

2019 Hugo Award finalists announced
Tumblr media
The 2019 Hugo Award nominees have been announced; the Hugos will be presented this summer at the 2019 World Science Fiction Convention in Dublin, Ireland.
Normally, I find that I've read and reviewed a huge slice of the year's finalists, but this year is different; I've done a lot less reading lately, partly because I wrote two books in 2018 and partly because the new EU Copyright Directive ate my life for about 10 months in the past year.
I was a little sad to be so far behind the curve when I saw the new list, but then I realized that this meant that I had a bunch of really exciting books to add to my to-be-read pile!
One notable inclusion: the Archive of Our Own fanfic archive -- a project of the Organization for Transformative Works (for whose advisory board I volunteer) -- is up for "Best Related Work."

The 75th World Science Fiction Convention (commonly known as WorldCon) is being held this weekend in Helsinki, Finland. The convention is where the annual Hugo Awards are presented, and today, the convention announced the latest recipients. This year, women almost completely swept the Hugo Awards, taking home the top prizes for literature in the science fiction community. That’s particularly notable, given how the awards have been increasingly recognizing works from female and minority creators. The trend prompted a counter-movement from two group of fans, the self-described “Sad Puppies,” and their alt-right equivalents, the “Rabid Puppies.” These groups gamed the awards and forced a slate of nominees onto the Hugo ballot in 2015, prompting widespread backlash within the wider genre community. Another award, the Dragon, faced similar issues earlier this week when several authors asked to pull their nominations over concerns about Puppy interference and the award’s integrity. This year’s sweep by female creators seems to be a strong repudiation of anti-diversity groups. 2017 also marked the year the ceremony earned its own award: a representative from the Guinness Book of World Records certified that the Hugos are the longest-running science fiction awards ever. The Best Novel Hugo went to N.K. Jemisin, for The Obelisk Gate, a novel set in the midst of a magical apocalypse. It’s also the sequel to The Fifth Season, which took home the same award last year. Her next novel, and final installment of the trilogy, The Stone Sky, is out next week. Image: Orbit Books Here’s the full list of nominees and winners (in bold) for 2017’s Hugo Awards: BEST NOVEL The Obelisk Gate by N. K. she clearly wasn't handling the breakup well, unable to understand how they could move on so quickly while she was still processing everything. she came by to pick up the remainder of her items, but she quickly regretted that decision when her eyes landed on what appeared to be another woman's belongings. her heart felt like it was ripping in two, and the surge of emotion drove the next words out of her mouth. "so what? you're dating someone else now?" she demanded, her voice tinged with a mix of hurt and anger. her chest tightened, and she tried to steady her breathing, but the whirlwind of emotions was overwhelming.she had hoped that coming here would provide some closure, a final step in letting go, but instead, it felt like another blow to her already fragile heart.

As she laid there in the dark, unable to sleep due to the thunderstorm that was happening outside. She couldn’t help but roll onto her side, a soft sigh escaping her lips as eyes caught a glimpse of the man laying next to her. His face resembling nothing but pure bliss as he slept. Her hand reached out towards the stubble that occupied his cheek, softly allowing her thumb to brush across it as a soft smile came to her lips. Internally debating with herself on whether she should wake him up or allow him to continue dreaming whatever was going on that head of his. Propping herself on her elbow, slightly leaning over in order to press a gentle kiss to the same cheek before rolling over onto her back. Eyes immediately going back to the same spot on the ceiling as she was prepared for how long the night was going to be, considering this storm seemed to be going on for quite awhile now.

dressed in the latest lingerie she had purchased - a surprise for him since they had plans for him to come over tonight. the color red always complimented her skin tone, so it didn’t take much thought when purchasing it. it was around that time and here came the waiting - she had intentionally left the door unlocked so he could allow himself in. as she was lighting a few of the candles in her room, she became slightly startled when she felt a pair of hands attach to her waist but what really sent chills down her spin was how he whispered so delicately into her ear. “well, you’re early.” she responded.

waking up after working the night shift, it felt like the middle of the night despite the sun shining into the window. giving off a slight groan from her lips she figured that grayson was around elsewhere as they weren’t on the same type of schedule. “babe.” her voice soft as she tried to see if he was anywhere nearby as she began rubbing her eyes and really seeing how bright it was.

the day had been a tad stressful for her, so her one solution to unwinding after a long day started with the man who was at home waiting for her. without saying much as she came through the door, she took her shoes off and made the walk to where he was lounging comfortably on the couch. lifting up her skirt slightly on the sides, giving herself the flexibility to take a seat on his lap, legs on either side of his waist. pressing her lower half into his as she leaned in to press a soft kiss to his lips. “i had a horrible day. make me forget about it?”

the curiosity finally got the best of her, especially after a random girl had recognized her roommate when they went out to the local grocery store. scanning the room one last time to ensure that he wasn’t home, she let her fingers get to typing as she searched his name on one of the websites. her eyes widening when she saw how many there was to choose from. clicking on a random one that would kill the wonder, she started it and found herself completely sucked into it. it was a bit odd watching him like this - it was as if she was somehow exposing him. she was so focused on the screen that it took her a bit too long too notice him lingering at the doorway, her eyes immediately going in his direction as her cheeks turned a dark shade of red. “oh, my god. there’s no explaining myself here, is there?” she asked embarrassed, reaching for the mouse to at least pause the video to stop the additional noise.

she hated how effortlessly it seemed for him to move on from their relationship. the idea of sharing a bed with another person felt like torture to her at the moment. she guessed part of her was still holding out hope that they would figure things out and return to each other. but that possibility seemed more like a distant fever dream the longer her eyes lingered on the women's clothing scattered across his floor in the background. she searched his eyes for any hint of emotion but found nothing. alisa fought back the tears that threatened to spill from her eyes as she scoffed slightly. "no, id hate to disturb such a lovely morning for you two, truly. i just want my things," she said, her voice stern, filled with emotion, and tinged with anger. she took a shaky breath, trying to compose herself. The urge to lash out was strong, but she knew it would accomplish nothing.

he looked at her, confusion flickering across his face. her reaction felt unnecessary, almost unwarranted, in his mind. they were done. whatever he did now was no longer her concern. he never let himself get too attached—it was easier that way. people came and went, and he had learned not to expect too much from anyone. in return, he expected people not to expect much from him. it minimized the pain, the hurt. emotions, to him, were a waste of energy, a distraction he didn’t have time for. or rather, a distraction he chose to avoid. "yeah, so?" he said, his voice flat, unconcerned, as he glanced over his shoulder at her. he assumed she’d spotted the clothing casually strewn across the floor—likely a blouse left behind from last night. dinner had taken an unexpected turn, and dessert had been followed by a more… physical way of burning calories. his nonchalance remained unshaken as he shrugged, gesturing vaguely toward the inside of the apartment. "you want to come in and say hello? though… i think that’d be a little awkward for her. she’s still in the shower."
