Spoiler Free Alien:Romulus discussion
Gonna get hate for this but Alien:Romulus was not the best
As I told my brother, I did not hate it nor dislike it. It just could have been better.
I went in with a "casual fan" mindset rather than a critic or really invested fan one, I'm trying not to be biased about it. I feel that the good scores/reviews are pretty biased because of nostalgia and it is better compared to Alien³ and Alien:Resurrection.
But it just isn't the best?
Act I had a good buildup
Act II unfortunately was not very good and the build up from Act I went downwards instead
Act III did save the film however, but even then it could have gone differently
And as a fan, I dislike when references are relied on too heavily. Obviously there were many wonderful references, but there were some that should have been left out rather than copied. Romulus lacked a bit of uniqueness to it (BUT it still is original enough). Really trying to put the fan service aside but...oof.
As my brother said, if you're a casual and you haven't watched ALIEN then you won't really mind it?

1, 3, 6, 16 for Halloween asks pls :)
thank youuuu!! here's the ask game these are from btw
what are you dressing up as?
aaaa I'm not sure!! originally I was gonna make a chemise and dye bloodstains on it to go as a Victorian style ghost or maybe like an Elm Street style final girl... time has been tight n I am not near done so I am considering other options... we will see!
3. what are your go-to movies to watch for the season?
Trick R' Treat is my absolute favorite to watch right around now!! if you haven't seen it, it's a super fun movie with so much rewatch potential, it's basically 4 (to 5ish) quirky short horror stories set in the same town on Halloween night... part of the fun is that there are connections between all the stories, and the movie is dense with little details to notice. Also, I really love Rhonda's story, though people may feel mixed on its portrayal of neurodivergence/disability I think it's really cool. Also! A really fun take on werewolves! Besides that, Ring is still one of my comfort movies of all time, and even though it is significantly less Halloween-ish but somehow I always find myself watching Alien:Resurrection right around now too. Finally, I only first saw it this year but I think May (2002) is also an excellent Halloween movie! Pair it w Trick r Treat n the Ring and you may notice a pattern....
6. what halloween costume(s) DO you want to see this year?
hmm I've never thought about this... Honestly though I just get excited to see costumes at all lol. I'm always especially a sucker for women of horror at all but if I see a good Ellen Ripley costume I will die happy....
16. what is your dream halloween costume you haven't been able to execute yet?
I've always wanted to dress as one of the buzzards from Mad Max... idk why I find it so compelling. There's something about covering your body completely and specifically altering your silhouette to deliberately look less human/approachable that appeals to me a lot

hey, I hope you‘re doing well! I just read your Andy post (coming right out of the movie and head buzzing with thoughts) and I liked your take. I would indeed very much like to hear (read) your thoughts on sexual violence, birth, and motherhood in the alien series 🙃
hi! it is 12 am but i’m here to give the people what they want. i have done multiple academic papers on the alien franchise, and through my research i have learned that the process of a face hugger planting a chest burster in someone is to signify rape leading to pregnancy. because of this, ridley scott wanted the first person in the franchise to experience this to be a man, because he felt it tasteless to show something that happens to women happening to a woman, and to “turn the tables” of what is expected.
throughout the series this theme of birth and motherhood is heavily echoed, specifically in alien3, alien resurrection, and now romulus. in alien3 the alien leaves ripley alone because she’s is carrying (pregnant with) a new queen (to my memory at least). in alien: resurrection we see this symbolism strengthen. the queen alien respects ripley 8 like because she is her own flesh and blood, but more than that, because she is a mother. ripley 8 displays a primal kind of affection for the alien that is genetically related to her, treating them the way an animal would nuzzle her babies.
i think this theme of motherhood has a gradual and intentional build up. in alien ripley does not have very many maternal characteristics, except for maybe her love for jonesy. in aliens she realizes her daughter is dead, and struggles to cope with that while protecting a young child (newt). the parallels between her as a mother to newt and the alien queen as a mother to all of her children is super interesting, because they’re both trying to protect their own kids in the ways they see fit. in alien3 their paths as mothers cross even more until alien:resurrection, where they ultimately become two parts of one being.
though i think it could have been executed a bit better, the themes of motherhood and sexual violence are continued in romulus. my mom suggested that maybe the alien would have left kay alone because the xenomorphs prioritize birth and reproduction so much. literally their only goal is to continue to reproduce as much as physically possible. but as it was, prometheus probably had the most overt themes of birth, while the other alien movies tended to be more subtle, especially the first one

Alien3 Was A Bad Film Because...
...Hick and Newt die at the beginning, and Ripley dies at the end. There’s “no catharsis.”
Okay, that’s a reason to not like it. We can all have our feelings about a film, but don’t say it’s objectively worse than some other film because of how it made you feel. For good sci-fi films, for good horror films -- for any genre except “family” or “rom com”, maybe -- it’s not required that that they give good feels or even closure at the end.
A zero-sum ending is hard to pull off well. There’s a difference between an effective dark ending and pure nihilism; and I agree with Ebert that nihilism for its own sake isn’t deep.
But IMHO (see what I did there?) a zero-sum ending, done well, can actually be more powerful than simply balancing sad with happy, because it invites us to consider more complex forms of resolution. Pitch Black, The Thing, possibly The Exorcist, or even Attack of the Crab Monsters are flicks without the triumphant survival of the protagonists at the end, and to me they hit harder because of it. Not in the bleak nihilistic way of Se7en, but in a counterbalanced way: monster dead, human dead, sometimes that’s what happens.
Even Alien ends up that way, from a certain point of view. I always thought this passage from ADF nicely summed up how I felt at the end:
Tumblr media
I didn’t like Alien3 when I first saw it. I was not at all pleased, no way. But I kept coming back to it. And once I got over what I had expected from it and began to look at it in its own right, it has (ha) grown on me.
To me, the film’s resolution isn’t one of individual survival. It’s the mixed emotions of loss and triumph. Because individual death was against a greater, collective survival. At the time the film came out, the Ultimate Lose vs. the alien wasn’t mere death; it was letting the alien get into the hands of the Company, and thence to Earth.
My perspective on the “Alienverse” differs from fans who never knew a world where all 4-6 “Alien” films didn’t already exist in a boxed set. I, like the audiences for which the films were made, saw each one as it was released, never knowing if there would be another. That’s a different style of media consumption than today where a 3-part epic movie series is made from Tolkien’s cute little Hobbit book; where on-demand Netflix series are available for binging; where franchises are the new normal and sequels are expected.
In that light, yes: why the hell would this one episode do such violence to the characters from the previous part of the series? And how can it end that way when we know that the crooks just get their dirty hands on a queen later? What a cheat! It just doesn’t fit in! At least Resurrection was campy!
So I ask you to consider this: try Alien3 in the context in which it was made and released.
Try to mentally erase the other films and just… watch it on its own merit.
You’ll have some recollections of a sci-fi film from over a decade ago that looked like nothing anyone had ever seen before, and had people running out of the theatre. You’ll remember an action film from 6 years ago with space marines kicking alien ass. You’ll know the beast has two sets of teeth and it lays its spawn in people’s chests. Everyone knows that. Ferris Beuller knows that.
And those films left an impression on you — maybe you even re-watch the videotapes from time to time and you’re eager to see what else could possibly happen in that universe, with that creature.
But that’s all you know.
Okay? All in that early-90′s frame of mind? Good, now settle** in for this phantasmagorically gorgeous, gothic, redemptive tragedy. A tale of a beast from the depths of our psyches and a woman whose entire life has been taken over by that beast.
Tumblr media
And watch as, with almost no tools and no friends, she finally brings the story to a close… through her will. On her terms.
Then try to tell me that, in comparison, Resurrection was not JUST something that left you FEELING better at the end, but is actually a better film in its own right.
IMHO (there, I’m doing it again) Alien3 is the deepest of all the Alien films. Even if it’s not my favorite.
**(NOTE: Directors cut, not theatrical cut, required here.)

Movie Round-Up 2017
My opinions only, of course! :)
Best of 2017:
Logan - This movie is magnificent from the opening to the end credits, and if you haven’t seen it, go out and rectify that RIGHT NOW.  Hugh Jackman brings an utterly heartbreaking vulnerability to an aging Wolverine. Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier and newcomer Dafne Keen as X-23 keep pace easily with Jackman’s fantastic performance.  The story is amazing, the acting is phenomenal, the special effects and fight choreography are stunning.  Seriously, just sit down and watch it already, even you are not a fan of the X-Men franchise.  You won’t regret it.
Thor: Ragnarok - A delightful romp that, although it doesn’t hold up particularly well on its own, lightens up the Marvel Cinematic Universe almost as easily as a Guardians film. And despite its overall silly tone, it does a good job wrapping up the Asgardian story line and delivers some actual consequences that will reverberate in later films.
Wind River - Stunning cinematography and superb writing elevate this fairly by-the-book murder mystery above its brethren.  Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olson (as well as the supporting cast) are fantastic, and their performances alone make it worth watching.
Get Out - As much biting social commentary as it is thrilling horror movie, this was by far the biggest surprise of 2017 for me.  Everything about Get Out was meticulously crafted, and it deserves every bit of praise it got.  I can’t wait to see what else Jordan Peele has up his sleeve.
Tie: Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and Spider-Man:Homecoming - Both manage to balance the humor and the gravity of their plots fairly well, giving us plenty of funny interspersed with character growth.  I have to give a slight edge to Spider-Man because of Tom Holland’s adorkable performance as Peter Parker, but I enjoyed them both a lot.
Most Disappointing of 2017:
Ghost in the Shell - Damn, I wanted to love this, but even Scarlett Johansson wasn’t enough to make this live action adaptation of the beloved anime work. (In fact a lot of people seemed to think she was part of the problem.  I disagree).  It’s gorgeous, and it’s well acted, but at the end of the day it just felt flat and forgettable.
Alien: Covenant - Not sure what I expected, considering the let down that was 2012’s Prometheus.  A far cry from the quality of the original Alien and Aliens, it has all the shine but none of the substance that would be a good modern addition to the franchise. It goes in a direction that makes little sense, and made less of an impression on me than even the much derided Alien:Resurrection.
The Dark Tower - Ugh.  It took me months to read Stephen King’s epic fantasy/horror series in its entirety, and all my hopes and dreams for a good adaptation of the source material were dashed very quickly during The Dark Tower. Not only was it a bad adaptation, it was a bad movie in general.  I only hope that someday down the road someone can do the saga justice, even if it’s as a TV show or miniseries, because at this point anything would be better than this movie.
Kong: Skull Island - Another one I had high hopes for, another one that let me down.  Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson were given nothing interesting to do in a movie with a bloated run-time and little plot, which is a shame because they are both fantastic actors.  Utterly forgettable.
Beauty & the Beast - Why, Disney? Why do you have to keep making these mediocre live action adaptations of your already excellent animated films?  I don’t know exactly what I expected with this one, other than more of what made the original good.  Instead we got a charmless scene for scene rehash, with lukewarm chemistry and tepid song and dance numbers that don’t hold a candle to that of the original.
Surprises of 2017:
The Lego: Batman Movie - Having enjoyed 2014’s The Lego Movie on a very basic level, I wasn’t expecting to like this as much as I did.  Genuinely funny and heartwarming, it was a better Batman movie than Batman V. Superman and a better DCU movie than Justice League.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Hear me out on this one.  Going into The Force Awakens in 2015, I had seen only A New Hope and The Phantom Menace in their entirety, so I had no idea what to expect of this new iteration.  As it turned out, I was largely indifferent to The Force Awakens.  Color me shocked when I walked out of The Last Jedi very excited for Episode IX.  Was The Last Jedi flawed? Absolutely - and yet, due to a few very crucial elements (mainly any part involving Rey or Kylo Ren), I wouldn’t call it unsalvageable.  In fact, it’s one of the few movies I’d ever consider going to see in the theaters twice, just so I can have more of the good stuff.
IT - I may have spent half the movie covering my eyes, but as far as horror movies go, that’s high praise coming from me.  While IT has a few issues, overall I found this modern adaptation of Stephen King’s classic novel to be thrilling, terrifying, and terribly beautiful.
Power Rangers - Having grown up with a cousin who spent a good chunk of time obsessed with the original Mighty Morphin version, I watched this mostly for nostalgia.  While it takes itself way too seriously for the most part, Elizabeth Banks’ campy turn as Rita Repulsa elevates the quality whenever she’s hamming it up onscreen.  Overall I enjoyed it, which was not something I expected for a movie rebooting a very bad 90s kids’ show.
Colossal - Based on the trailer, you’d think Colossal was a comedy - and you’d be completely wrong.  Hiding a slightly disturbing redemption story behind a funny facade, this one came out of left field, but managed to leave a good impression.
Movies of 2017 that I wish I had seen:
Lady Bird - From all accounts, it’s brilliant, and I’m just upset that no theater within a reasonable driving distance is playing it. Saoirse Ronan is an amazing young actress and I’ve always enjoyed anything I’ve seen her in.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - See above, ha.  As we both consider In Bruges to be one of the best movies ever made, my husband and I are eager to see it.
Baby Driver - For some reason my husband and I completely missed this in the theaters and we’re now regretting it, considering the amount of praise it has gotten.  Edgar Wright’s movies are always fantastically shot, and I’m sure this is no different.

YES HELLO I AM SUBSCRIBING TO THIS NEWSLETTER.
So, Buffy was grabbed from Slayers and the original BTVS movie. Firefly's cast was grabbed from Alien:Resurrection (Whedon did write that one as well, but it was by committee, so who knows how much was actually his). Angel was a spinoff.... ok. Which one of SEVERAL properties did Dollhouse come from originally?
Twitter is dying, maybe I should post my thoughts on here
Thought 1: Joss Whedon stole the characters from the anime Slayers to make Buffy. There’s just no Giles or Angel equivalent, the latter because Slayers doesn’t have a sex pervert.
Thought 2: By refusing to update the dinosaur anatomy to modern science, Jurassic World ironically contributes to the conservatism that the original Jurassic Park became famous for smashing.
Thought 3: Nicolas Cage and Keanu Reeves are underrated because people don’t realize they’re perfect silent movie actors who were born in the wrong era.
