"I believed you had changed."

Rhaenyra lifted her head, abandoning the scrolls she had been reading to look at Alicent.

"Would you care to enlighten me of what I'm being accused this time?" She asked, resisting the urge to roll her eyes only for the fact that Rhaenyra could see how tense Alicent's body looked.

"You are still the same impetuous, brash, and spoiled girl you've always been."

Rhaenyra stood from her chair, the scraping sound echoing loudly.

"Must I remind you that if not for my impetuous decision to go to King's Landing, you and Helaena would still be trapped there?"

At that, Alicent had the decency to avert her eyes.

Sighing, Rhaenyra shook her head and let her anger fade in favor of maintaining the tentative truce the two of them had managed to come to.

"What brought this about Alicent?"

When brown eyes met blue ones again, they were filled with unshed tears. "I... I'm stupid." She scoffed at herself and shook her head. "I thought that after everything I've been through there was no trace of naivite left in me, but it seems that whenever you're near, I turn back into that silly girl again."

Rhaenyra frowned and walked over to Alicent, tentatively taking one of her hands in hers.

"I still don't understand," she said softly, hoping Alicent would explain herself better.

Avoiding Rhaenyra's eyes now that she was so close, Alicent spoke barely above a whisper as shame threatened to overtake her. "I was so mad when you put everything at risk for a tryst with Ser Criston." Rhaenyra's eyes widened, but she did not interrupt. "I could not understand how you were so willing to make yourself, your family, the throne so vulnerable to attacks...

"And... with Ser Harwin... it wasn't just you in risk, but your children as well."

Rhaenyra opened her mouth, but the look Alicent gave her---begging her to be honest---silenced her.

"I hated you for lying to me. I hated and envied you for seeking your pleasures when I could not do the same, but—" Alicent pulled her hand free from Rhaenyra and took a step back. "But you were just the heir then, now you're the queen and you're fighting for your throne and you still—"

"I still what, Alicent?"

Anger boiled in her veins, making Alicent shout, "You still put everything at risk for her!"

Taken a back, Rhaenyra's mind rushed to catch up with what Alicent meant.

"You... You saw us... You were the noise I heard."

Alicent looked away once more, angrily drying her tears.

"I thought that after marrying Daemon you had finally gotten everything you desired." Alicent said flatly.

Rhaenyra blinked, trying to understand what any of it had to do with Alicent being naive until it finally clicked.

Tentatively, Rhaenyra stepped closer to Alicent once more and gently cupped her cheek.

"You'll have to forgive me, my lady." Rhaenyra's touch was enough to set Alicent’s skin ablaze, but the jovial tone of her voice was what convinced Alicent to meet her eyes. "I was convinced that any affection you had for me had turned into hatred. I am sorry I did not see through it."

Alicent bit her lip, her chin trembling as she did her best to keep fresh tears from falling.

"Do you love her?" Her voice was so small, Alicent hated it.

Rhaenyra, intending on not lying again, took a moment to assess her feelings.

"I admire and respect her." She said sincerely. "And were we not in the middle of a war, I could grow to love her, yes, just as I've loved you once."
