imagine you are ali mills schwarber, you’re in the middle of divorcing your husband and father of your two children. you get a facebook friend request out of the blue of your ex from high school. your relationship ended badly, he started a whole "to the death" rivalry with this cute new kid from jersey after he saw you and him flirt on the beach. he has no pictures or information on his facebook profile. you accept the friend request because, hey you’re getting divorced and maybe you’re just feeling a little reckless. you send him a pretty standard "it’s been so long" message. he proceeds to like every single one of your pictures since the creation of your account and messages you the most basic, non descriptive reply in the world. you wonder if you should really get into a conversation with him (and you’re going through so much right now, it might be a bad time).

he posts five pictures of himself in a sleeveless black gi to his facebook account. you tell him you’re gonna be in town and you tell your mom to NOT expect you back home too soon on the day you’re meeting him.

you’re here to get your FLIRT on, you’re here for DRAMA, you’re here to maybe FUCK your ex! you go to the country club christmas party with him for the scandal of it and then your OTHER EX is there! you’re like oooh, maybe this will be fun and okay, you’re not gonna flirt with him because he’s married and his wife is cool but hey, your first ex is still very much an option and… oh… wait… your first ex ends up being wayyyy more interested in his rivalry with your second ex, the cute new kid now turned cute car salesman and god, that rivalry is STILL going on. you end the evening having played peacemaker between the both of them and you’re told your first ex might have a girlfriend? also now he drives a mom van.

what i’m thinking about: johnny being so hung up over ali not because she was the love of his life (bro, you were 16 and your relationship started with you harassing her into giving you a chance), but because, at the end of the day, she was his best friend before the breakup.

he remembers things through an unmistakably romantic lens, but look at what little we know: he says outright that he never really got over her, never really had any special connection to women after her, because he couldn’t open up around them like he could with her. she gave him the headband he wears to this day. he admired her for being a “firecracker” and they had a lot in common, plenty of reasons why he might have wanted to get back together, but the thing is, the only time he ever kissed her or did anything overtly “romantic” onscreen, it was 100% for daniel’s benefit. i just feel like johnny saw ali as a safe harbor away from the masculine bravado of cobra kai, someone he could really be himself around without constantly posturing and worrying about some bullshit image or reputation. 

for them to have been together for two whole years, there must have been something ali saw in johnny, too, or she wouldn’t have stuck around--we see how they act post-breakup; she’s NOT scared of him. not to the point where she would stay in a relationship with someone she hated. i think she got maybe the best sides of johnny, and forgave some of his faults because she saw what he went through at home or what have you, but as they got older and johnny increasingly drank kreese’s kool-aid, he started ignoring or laughing off her pleas to stay away from or at least think critically about cobra kai. finally, she got fed up and left him, which pushed johnny even further into kreese’s shadow--ali, the last person outside the dojo whose opinion held real weight for johnny, was suddenly out of his life, and he only really had one way to go.

definitely not saying this to imply she should have stayed with him, or that it’s his fault he went so bad--it’s not. that’s on johnny. but i do think this aspect of their relationship influences how long its dissolution has been fucking johnny up; she definitely wasn’t just some babe to him. from his perspective, he lost the person who he opened up to more than anyone else, and that just cemented what he’d been taught: he had no family but cobra kai.

I hope Ali's Cobra Kai appearance changes how some posters talk about her.

She's been:

- An object that Daniel can steal from Johnny.

- A bitch for not wanting to "talk it out" with Johnny and leaving him over something "trivial"

- A bitch for supposedly crashing Daniel's car and leaving him for a jock.

No S3 plot spoilers in this post, but I was satisfied with her in it. I wasn't sure I would be but I think they did well with it.

all i have to say is that every men in the Valley needs to watch out for these two, and I do love their energy in the S3 finale! also Amanda literally saved Johnny’s relationship with Carmen by informing Ali that Johnny was dating someone so thank Amanda for shooting down that line of drama before it could go anywhere

Home, sweet home (part 2)

It turns out taking a three week long vacation to Hawaii can create a very long list of to-do things when you come back. Who'd have thought?

Pablo and I have been on decorating duty today. I wanted him to have a space that felt truly his in this house, something with a more masculine energy in a place that still screams 'aunt Pamela' when you walk into certain rooms. Fortunately, uncle George's old study had been empty for many years, because aunt Pamela never did anything with it after he passed, and with some changes in the furniture we've managed to make it into a really nice office for Pablo.

He's just left for work, and I sit at his desk to have a quiet moment before plunging back into life at the Valley. The only people who have seen us after we came back are @robby-l-keene and Jason, and I have a very long list or people to call.

Speaking of calls...

Earlier today I moved the old-fashioned answering machine to Pablo's study, thinking it would give it a nice retro touch, and I've ignored the blinking light for hours. When I finally press the button I see a missed call from @mamabearlarusso... I have to talk to her about that girls' night we were planning, and this is kind of the perfect moment because I have some news to share with her.

I also will have to deal with @everyonesfavoritegoldenboy, of course. I hope he's read my postcard, and I also hope he's been able to relax a bit with Bobby and the others. We all needed a rest, and Johnny has got so many things to think about... Maybe now that I'm here I will be able to help a bit. The doctor is in.

Pablo has left his laptop open on his desk (how this man is an ex-FBI agent is a mystery to me). As I extend my hand to close it I see what he's been working on... a digital photo album of our vacation in Kauai. The album cover is a picture of us walking on the beach, holding hands. It makes me smile like an idiot.

The lid closes with a satisfying 'click', and my eyes rest on my hands for a moment. I never thought I would see another one of these on my finger so soon... and yet, here we are.

It's going to be... fun, telling everybody. Especially my own children. I suspect Jason will be eerily calm, like he always is, and Pam will probably throw a fit first and be super excited later. Amanda will finally be able to quiet that little voice in her head that suspects me every time I get close to Johnny. And Johnny... well, I have no idea how he's going to react.

I pick up the phone and try to reach Amanda, but it goes to voicemail.

"Hey, @mamabearlarusso... I have a missed call from you. Sorry for not calling you as soon as I landed, things have... happened, and I've been a little busy. But I'm ready for our girls' night whenever you want. I'll make dinner, you can take care of the drinks and we'll let your daughter pick the movies... How does that sound?"

After I leave her the message I realize I'm still smiling. How silly that something as small as a ring is able to make a person so happy... but it's not just that, of course. Before Pablo appeared in my life I never thought I'd want another man to be here, in my life, all the time. And yet... here we are.

I impulsively grab a sheet of Pablo's stationery (seriously, who writes on monogrammed paper on the 21st century? I love this man) and scribble a few words several times, just to see what they look like all together.

I went down the Cobra Kai YouTube wormhole earlier and, while I’ve been more than a little MIA here, I have to ask.

Am I the only one who wants Ali and her husband to still be happily married? I’m fine with Ali coming back in some context but I’d love to see her in a good, strong marriage.

There are some really bizarre theories out there as to what her role will be if she ends up in the third season. The one I’m referring to specifically is this absolutely insane notion that she’s getting divorced and gets back with Johnny.
