Some bad teevee:
FIGHT NIGHT: THE MILLION-DOLLAR HEIST (2024): Tasteless, embarrassingly bad eight-part Peacock miniseries wastes a high-profile Black cast (including Samuel L. Jackson, Don Cheadle, Taraji P. Henson, Chloe Bailey, and Terrence Howard) in a clumsy attempt to turn a true crime podcast, about the armed robbery of an afterparty for the October 1970 Muhammad Ali–Jerry Quarry fight, into a self-consciously retro blaxploitation pastiche. Starring comedian Kevin Hart as Gordon "Chicken Man" Williams, the Atlanta hustler who organized the party for an array of top Black mob figures and then found himself on the hook after the robbery, the show is a tonally uneasy mix of grim drama and leaden shtick, which smothers some flailing stabs at social commentary while giving the more serious scenes (which are often quite brutal) an inappropriately campy vibe. Hart (who also produced) acts like he's in a latter-day FRIDAY sequel with all the punchlines removed, while Henson looks so uncomfortable that you can't help cringing every time she's onscreen; even Don Cheadle's weary dignity is very hard-pressed, and Dexter Darden's weak caricature of Ali doesn't help. Worse, the story just isn't interesting enough to sustain eight one-hour episodes. CONTAINS LESBIANS? No. VERDICT: One can see what they were going for ("COTTON COMES TO HARLEM meets ACROSS 110TH STREET, but based on a true story!"), but it's a complete train wreck.
NOBODY WANTS THIS (2024): Thinly plotted, stupid sitcom about an obnoxious blond shiksa (Kristen Bell), who runs a confessional podcast with her equally obnoxious sister (Justine Lupe), unexpectedly falling for a cute rabbi (Adam Brody), whose family and friends can't believe he's dumped the hot Jewish woman (Emily Arlook) everyone expected him to marry. Feels like a (bad) romcom feature script stretched awkwardly into 10 half-hour episodes, and it becomes more and more offensive as it goes on, villifying every Jewish woman older than about 15 in a vain attempt to make the boorishly antisemitic heroine seem like a reasonable romantic choice. CONTAINS LESBIANS? The main character periodically mentions that she was a lesbian for a year, but she's not now. VERDICT: Aptly titled.
PENANCE (2020): Eye-rolling British drama/thriller, based on a Kate O'Riordan novel (strictly beach and bathtub reading, one assumes), about a middle-aged mum (Julie Graham), reeling from the unexpected death of her 20-year-old son, who has a Horniness Crisis™ involving a hunky, manipulative young man (Nico Mirallegro), who's also dating her teenage daughter (Tallulah Greive) and is plainly up to no good. Not at all credible even before some absurd third-act contrivances, it's essentially a wish fulfillment fantasy (or porn scenario) drenched in just enough sour self-loathing and turgid melodrama for the target audience (Tory-voting sexually frustrated middle-aged white women) to reassure themselves that they're not really having fun. Just to make sure, Art Malik costars as the kind of insufferably chummy local priest Pat O'Brien used to play. CONTAINS LESBIANS? Nope. VERDICT: Probably well-tailored for its intended audience, but for everyone else, it's too silly to take seriously and too dour to even constitute good trash.
THE PENGUIN (2024): HBO Max dared to ask, "Will the market bear yet another Batman-less Batman TV project?" and came up this spinoff of THE BATMAN (2022), returning the film's version of the Penguin (Colin Farrell, buried beneath half his weight in prosthetics), maneuvering between the rival crime families of Alberto Falcone (Michael Zegen) and Sal Maroni (Clancy Brown), with his only ally a Black teenager (Rhenzy Feliz) who becomes his driver and protégé (not unlike the relationship between Dwight and Tyson in TULSA KING). Cristin Milioti costars as Alberto's unstable sister Sofia Falcone, newly released from Arkham Asylum, with Shohreh Aghdashloo as Sal's ruthless wife Nadia. There's no reason to assume this show won't follow exactly the same pattern as GOTHAM and PENNYWORTH — i.e., a brief flirtation with gritty urban crime drama that quickly goes off the rails into campy derangement while stuffing its pockets with as many second-tier Bat-adjacent characters as Warner Bros. will permit. (Alberto and Sofia are borrowed from the Jeph Loeb/Tim Sale series BATMAN: THE LONG HALLOWEEN and DARK VICTORY, although this version of them bears only a vague resemblance to the original.) Since the show's only apparent reason for being is to juice interest in the eventual Matt Reeves/Robert Pattinson theatrical sequel without impacting that sequel (or even showing Batman) in any meaningful way, why bother? CONTAINS LESBIANS? TBD. VERDICT: Lucy with the football.

STARKID YEAR!
This year has been a Starkid year for me.
Let me explain: I am French and live in the South of France, so it's easy to say that in 15 years, it has been very difficult - IMPOSSIBLE - to be able to meet any of Team Starkid members!
In other words: I'M IN A RAGE!!!!!
My computer was my only help!
To my dismay, I missed the Starkid show in London (damn it, I hate my job!) and now, I can wait forever for them to come in France or in the UK...
But this August 2024 was a small miracle! I decided to go back to Scotland again with some friends (I lived and worked there for a time) and... wait, WHAT? The TIN CAN BROS are playing the "Solve it Squad" there, at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival? Tickets, tickets, tickets, I want tickets!!!!!! YEAH, the day I'm in Edinburgh, it's not sold out! I meet Brian Rosenthal, Joey Richter and Corey Lubowich... too bad the 'Queen' Lauren Lopez was sick... ok, I was a bit disappointed, so... I bought a gift for Joey, Lauren and even Diane.
I go back home, after this amazing trip and my mind full of memories and all the butterflies in my tummies because I made Joey laugh!
As usual, I watch my weekly Meredith Stepien Vlog, I comment on two videos. She answered to both... wait, WHAT?
The, scrolling on Instagram and a notification appeared in Ali Gordon's profil, a "like", a comment, a message ( very natural, with no wait for an answer) and she starts to reply and have a small conversation with me... WHAT IS HAPPENING?
It might seem insignificant for you guys, you might have met them, seen a live show, talked to them... for me, it's such a pleasure!
As Joey Richter said once: "Dude, there is always something to smile about. Always."
Thank you for making everything a f***ing party, guys! I love you!
The first two pictures are mine, please ask me if you want to use them. The other two are illustrations...

To the anon who misses the old Starkid cast. I think Starkid has proved time and time again that there is always a way back. It might seem like there’s a lot more new people in the shows but the older cast members are still involved. Corey was in NPMD and he has been with Starkid since their second show. VHS Christmas carols have had tons of older Starkid cast members involved in its various different productions. Ali Gordon came back after not being in a Starkid musical since 2009! I love that we’re always getting new people added to the cast and I love it when the older people come back too

a letter from the desk of Lawrence Gordon to Adam Faulkner-Stanheight
read below or on ao3
Dear Adam,
I have never been a man to write letters, especially not of this variety. Furthermore, if I were ever to give you this, I’m sure you would simply laugh.
So, this will remain mine.
To be frank, I’m not sure where to begin. Would it be seeing you in my hospital, your dirty sneakers a clear contrast to the clinically pristine floor? Would it be hearing you laugh for the first time (and, forgive me here, thankfully not the last) as you were taking pictures of the new wing for the local paper? Would it be when you bumped into me and spilled my coffee, then said you knew a great cafe around the corner that we could go to if I was free, just so you could make up for it?
Would it be when I said yes? Because even then, even that very first day, I knew you would be the best mistake of my life.
I could describe how I felt when you kissed me, in that dingy alley behind that dive bar you took me to weeks later. I could say how truly alive I felt, not because of the thrill of an affair or because you were a man, but because it was you.
But that would be admitting too much, wouldn’t it? Because that’s not something we talk about.
We argue, and spill secrets over your pillow in the afterglow. We fight, and we fuck, and fight some more. And we always come back together to do it all again.
But we’ve left so much unsaid. So let me say it now.
I never believed myself to be a man of passion. Marrying Ali was convenient. We were, for all intents and purposes, a good match. I was fond of her, and she was of me. I wanted a companion, was expected to have a companion. I was beginning a promising career and she wanted a comfortable life. It made sense, logically, and that was enough for me.
The operative word there is was.
I never believed I was a man of passion, but now I know I simply never had anything to be passionate about.
You occupy my waking thoughts, even innocuous ones. I find a new restaurant and imagine how the candlelight would flicker across your face over dinner at it. I see a photograph in the paper and wonder it would look if you took it. I lay down to sleep and wish your voice was spilling in the darkness, just as it does those rare nights we have together.
You make me want in ways I never have before. I want your terrible, worn sneakers next to my shoes by the door. I want you to meet Diana and to see how you would make her smile. I want your life entwined messily with mine, in ways I can’t even imagine yet.
I am dancing around saying what this means, but I think we both know.
I love you, Adam, and I am terrified that I’ll never be able to say it aloud. I am terrified that you would run if I did, because I know you would. I’m terrified that if I reveal what you mean to me, that you’ll leave.
I love you and it scares me too.
You’ve ruined my life, Adam, but goddamn you. I’m happy to let you wreck it.
Yours,
Lawrence

Wake me up when the awards season ends, but also here are my faves:
Outstanding Drama Series: Succession will win and rightfully so, but Better Call Saul went so hard as well.
Outstanding Comedy Series: The Bear.
Best limited/anthology series: Beef.
Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series: Either one of the Succession guys (preferably Kieran Culkin this year) or Bob Odenkirk.
Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series: Sarah Snook. Not even going to debate this one. Season 4 was hers.
Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series: Jeremy Allen White.
Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series: Natasha Lyonne.
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series: Matthew Macfadyen.
Why was Nicholas Braun even nominated this year?
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series: No offense to J. Smith-Cameron and the White Lotus ladies (Jennifer Coolidge, the icon that you are), because they were all lovely, but Rhea Seehorn deserves it this year.
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series: Ebon Moss-Bachrach
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series: Ayo Edebiri
Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie: Steven Yeun
Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie: Ali Wong
Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series: A toss among Mark Mylod, Andrij Parekh and Lorene Scafaria.
Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie: Lee Sung Jin. But Jake Schreier will do too.
Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series: Wow, an embarrassment of riches. Jesse Armstrong for "Connor's Wedding" of course, but Gordon Smith (for "Point and Shoot") and Peter Gould (for "Saul Gone") come so close.
Outstanding Music Composition for a Series: Nicholas Britell.
Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series: Toss between Hiam Abbass and Harriet Walter. Probably the former this year.
Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series: Judith Light.
However, give Cherry Jones all the awards for her own appearance on Poker Face. Amazed she was nominated for Succession, but not Poker Face. She ate.
Outstanding Cinematography for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie: Jody Lee Lipes

Just saw Solve it Squad at the Edinburgh Fringe and it was incredible! I really enjoyed the rewrites, all of the new lines and bits of dialogue landed really well.
The cast were amazing, so great to see Lauren back! Brian did fantastic as always doing all the ensemble parts and Gabe was absolutely on fire as Keith - he was probably the crowd favourite tonight. Also Corey Lubowich walked past me twice (once inside the venue and once outside), I didn’t say hi because I’m awkward but it was cool to see him too.
I went with my partner who isn’t a theatre person and hasn’t seen any TCB content before but she absolutely loved it and had a great time.
There was a moment during the van scene where Gabe and Lauren broke character after a line where Keith told Scrags to believe women. Lauren was struggling to get back into character but Joey brought the scene back and the audience had a great time with it.
Overall it was a great show and would recommend to anyone visiting the Fringe.
Unfortunately I didn’t have time to visit the merch table as we were going to another show immediately after but I did manage to find a folded Solve it Squad leaflet in another venue so I have that at least.
We saw Baby Wants Candy right after (featuring Ali Gordon of Starkid fame) and that was also a really fun show. It’s an improv musical comedy that’s different every night - tonight was “Illegally Brunette” which followed the story of a village where it is illegal to be anything other than Blonde. It was tons of fun, a silly story with crazy plot lines and catchy improv songs. Would also recommend to anyone visiting the Fringe.

Starkid Shucked
It’s time for Starkid to get totally Shucked! The bizarre experience of Broadway’s new corn-based musical almost feels like a Starkid musical to me so I was all too ready to create this dreamcast once the cast recording dropped. So I hope you all enjoy this crop just in time for the Tony’s (in which Shucked will likely win one or two of them.)
(Also I realized I’d been writing Davis Hamilton’s name incorrectly, oops)
1. Lauren Lopez as Maizey 2. Britney Coleman as Lulu 3. Curt Mega as Gordy 4. Brian Rosenthal as Peanut 5. Davis Hamilton as Beau 6. Bryce Charles as Storyteller 1 7. Will Branner as Storyteller 2 8. Tyler Brunsman as Ensemble 9. Corey Dorris as Ensemble 10. Ali Gordon as Ensemble 11. AJ Holmes as Ensemble 12. Janaya Mahealani Jones as Ensemble 13. Joey Richter as Ensemble 14. Rachael Soglin as Ensemble 15. Tiffany Williams as Ensemble
Swings: Angela Giarratana, Brian Holden, James Tolbert, Virginia Vass
Understudies: Tyler Brunsman (Gordy, Beau, Storyteller 2), Angela Giarratana (Maizey), Ali Gordon (Maizey), Brian Holden (Beau), AJ Holmes (Peanut, Storyteller 2), Janaya Mahealani Jones (Lulu, Storyteller 1), Joey Richter (Gordy, Peanut), Virginia Vass (Lulu), Tiffany Williams (Storyteller 1)
Make sure to leave any show suggestions or any questions on my casting choices so I can explain them.

Definitely not the best argument and might not even be helpful but just trying to give a few of my thoughts on some teams
Personally a Gotham fan just because I love their players and the coach and their fucking name so much! but not so much the rest.
If any team i say Angel City solely based on Sydney Leroux and Ali Riley those two are absolutely hilarious people in general but they also have other amazing players! Sarah Gordon is amazing in defense and I’m still pissed she isn’t getting called up. Christen Press is still on the roster🤞🏼so hopefully she gets to play again one day! Also Portland Thorns! Amazing players, plus the atmosphere and the fans are some of the best in the league, they are pretty consistent with wins so not to much stress. Angel city not so much
I’m not the biggest fan of Washington right due to the fact that they traded Ashley Sanchez to North Carolina without notice after she already resign a three year extension. Deadass broke Trinity and Sanchez apart. (It was a very painful week for us and them) Also I think their Owner also owns OL Lyon Feminin. But they do have some great players (Trinity Rodman) and they are also getting Jonatan in the summer.
Kansas City Current, I’m pretty sure they are the only women’s team that have their own stadium but I absolutely hate their new coach.
Bay Fc, New team, Beattie, Deyna, and Asisat, I still believe we might get more players too
I usually go for my favorite players tho, thats all pretty much for right now, hope you get some more convincing arguments!
This was helpful nonny thank you 🫶🏻

Welp, whether we like it or not, it's the holiday season, and I believe I have been fairly good this year, so this is a list of things that I would most like for Christmas please
- more shows with missing characters, for the opportunity to see how the show carries on in their absence (specifically a Lonely Zagreus Show please, but I'd love to see a Lonely Hades Show too)
- the chance to see my faves in the roles I have yet to see them play (such as Ali Laocoön or Stephanie Macaria)
- the chance to see my faves in roles they have yet to play at all (you *know* this is about Fania Hades but also Ali Aegisthus)
- existing cast members to take on new roles generally (which has already started, and I understand that more is coming, and I'm very excited about it!)
- ideally with just a bit more gender-blended casting in favour of the female performers (Miranda and Maya would absolutely SMASH Neoptolemus and Patroclus and you know it)
- a few more TDM alumni to join the cast (literally all I want out of 2023 is Omar Gordon Agamemnon, ideally with Fania Clytemnestra, but any of the remaining TDM cast would be a delightful addition)
- at least one good production photo or clear video appearance of every character (EXCEPT LAOCOÖN, WE MUST NEVER LET THE OUTSIDE WORLD KNOW THIS CHARACTER EXISTS, purely because it's funny)
- THE SOUK (I understand there are reasons why we will never get this space dressed for public consumption, but I'm still going to dream about it)
- a really great time at the Remix (please no 1:1s!) and the subsequent New Year's party!!!
- and, like, some snacks and a cool keyring, idk
