Why are rain frogs so round? What's /inside/ of them around such an itty bitty skeleton?

So it turns out this is a really interesting question.

The first thing we must be aware of is that rainfrogs as we see them in videos of them squeaking are not quite the same shape as they are when at rest:

But you are quite right, they are very round. This is exemplified by the skeletal photo you refer to:

So what are we seeing?

Well, firstly, note that the body cavity in these frogs actually envelops the femurs, such that only the tibiofibula (fused in frogs) and the tarsals and metatarsals are outside the body. The arms are quite similarly enveloped, but a bit of the humerus does extend outside the body cavity too. This predisposes them to a rounder body shape.

Next, note the ilia - the U-shaped bone in the pelvic region. These in some breviceptid frogs are synostotically fused with the sacrum - that is to say, they are bound by bone-based connections to the bow-shaped vertebra at their tips. This whole joint seems to be quite smooth, and as a consequence, the back of the frog is quite smooth. The other thing we can see here is that the urostyle (i.e. the frog version of a coccyx) juts quite far beyond the ischium and pubis. This extends the body cavity beyond the hips. Note also that the pelvic girdle seems to be largely below the spine, rather than the typical position for frogs behind it and continuous with it. This makes the legs sit below the spine, rather than at its end, enhnacing the vertical roundness of the animal.

Next, let’s talk some soft tissue. Now, I’m not as familiar with soft-tissue in frogs as I am their skeletons, so you’ll have to bear with me a bit (rawr). Beddard (1908!!) studied the soft tissue of Breviceps verrucosus Rapp 1842. It seems that the majority of the body of these frogs is actually muscle. Beddard noted that muscles join the leg at the knee that extend into the body cavity, such that the inclusion of the thigh in the body cavity is further accentuated by musculature. The rectus abdominalis muscle is unusually large, extending from the lower abdomen up and around the sides of the body. Indeed, this large size appears to be the pattern with all of the major muscles, though in the throat the typical arrangement of large and small muscles is somewhat reversed. On the lateral side of the head, there is a substance that is not muscle, but appears to be loose tissue in which sits what is apparently the thymus gland.

There is a very large gap between the end of the urostyle and the anus (one fifth of the total length of the frog), in which there are almost no muscles, save for the one surrounding the lower cloaca. On either side of this area, between the posterior-most muscles of the thigh, lie two large ‘lymph-hearts’, as described by Beddard. These are between one quarter and one third of the total length of the frog. A further lypmh-sac sits between these lymph-hearts and the skin of the femoral region, and they are thus probably analogous to the femoral lymph-sacs of other frogs.

I find it interesting that Beddard (1908) did not mention any glandular formations in the dorsal region. As is evidence from many images (see below), these frogs are able to secrete a white, sticky, noxious substance from their skin (which they actually have to use during amplexus, as the male is too small relative to the female to mount her properly, and so he sticks himself to her with his glandular glue… kinky).

These glands do not apparently take up a great deal of the cutaneous tissue, and so I suppose are of no consequence to the size of the frog, especially relative to its enormous muscles.

The diet of these frogs consists almost exclusively of hymenopterans and isopterans (ants and termites). Neither of these insect groups are particularly fatty, so it is little surprise that their bodies appear to contain no large fat deposits - fatty bodies extend from the gonads up to the lungs and heart, but these comprise only a tiny fraction of the frog’s mass, and don’t contribute to the round shape. Instead, their bodies are extremely muscular, allowing them to be adept burrowers, ideal for their fossorial lifestyle.

So TL;DR: rain frogs are little balls of muscle (maybe the largest muscle mass relative to body mass of any vertebrate? science just doesn’t know).

Go Luck Yourself by Sara Raasch - Review

TL;DR

Pros: Characters are so loveable, cathartic resolution to side plot

Opinions going in/why I picked it up:

I adored Sara Raasch's previous book in the series, Nightmare Before Kissmas, so of course I picked up the second one as soon as it was available.

I am desperate for an Iris romance, so I was a tiny bit sad that this romance centered Kris, but I liked him as a character so I still wanted to pick this one up.

(Also, to note, an account that I assume is actually Sara Raasch liked my review for the previous book in the series, Nightmare Before Kissmas. This is fine, she's free to read and engage with whatever she wants, it was just a bit odd for me lol)

Likes:

I do like both of our MMCs, but this book made me LOVE Kris.

His internal battle with himself over what he can be outside of a servant or subduing force for his brother is both wonderful and heartbreaking. The idea that 'your worth is only what you provide to others' is one that I and I think many other people struggle with. It was lovely to see him go through that journey and still struggle with it, but have the tools and the support system to heal and find his own *happy* ever after.

And speaking of support system, Coal and Iris were just so lovely yet again. I adore this little trio and the little family they've formed, especially when things got tough for Kris, both with his mom and with Loch.

And speaking of his mom, man I'm so glad he finally dealt with her. I thankfully don't have any personal experience dealing with a narcissistic family member so I can't speak to the accuracy of the representation of it, but man was it cathartic to finally be rid of her.

Dislikes:

It's not exactly accurate say I disliked the politics of this book, they just weren't as interesting as the first book. Most of my complaint of this nature was surrounding Malachy, Loch's Uncle and Regent King of St Patrick's Day.

This guy who's supposed to be our antagonist just isn't around? Malachy showing up at the end to be evil for a bit and throw a wrench into Loch and Kris's relationship was just kind of... Lackluster?

It felt like the confrontation between Loch and Malachy was supposed to be this big, climatic thing, similar to Coal's conflict with his father, but it just didn't hit the same. Maybe because it wasn't from Loch's perspective so we don't get to hear the history as much?

All of the St. Patrick family kept saying how bad a guy Malachy was, but he just wasn't around enough to make me not like him. So when he had his great fall, I didn't feel triumphant either. He wasn't even in the scene where Loch took ownership of St. Patricks day, only came to yell at Loch after. And he was also stripped of his power/access to joy off page?? Like what.

I think that it could have been more interesting if Malachy were around a bit more to confuse Kris externally rather than it being left to Kris to confuse himself via overthinking. And to, y'know, *be* an antagonist.

And then, similar to the first book, it was odd to be teased with the whole "good boy" dialogue and have Loch being hinted at taking on a more "dom" role and then not actually including that in their spicy scenes. It kind of reminds me how Deep End by Ali Hazelwood used a ton of "more advanced" BDSM language but then proceeded to be the most basic form of a Dom/Sub relationship.

Hinting at more, but actually providing less. I'm sure it's enough for those who dont often read more kinky romances, but it just felt like an unfulfilled promise to me.

Other Notes:

I think for most people it's probably fine (this is just a me thing) but I was struggling to read Loch's dialogue. It's just an Irish accent, but that's not an accent I hear very often, so I don't really know what it's supposed to sound like. I got the hang of it by the end, but man was it a struggle at the start. (Tbf I struggle to read my OWN accent when it's written out in dialogue)

In a similar, but more humorous vein: just like I don't know Irish pronunciation of words, I also don't know Irish pronunciation of names.

It took me until the last like 30 pages of the book to realize that Malachy's name is pronounced the same as Malachi. In my head I was pronouncing it like "Mah - Lock - key" because it was spelled similar to the word Malarkey... My bad lmao

Nata il 24 marzo 1944 a Michelstadt, ha preferito, sin da bambina, il linguaggio del disegno, che considerava molto più libero di quello orale. 

I genitori avrebbero voluto che studiasse economia, ma a 19 anni aveva deciso di frequentare l’Accademia di Belle Arti di Amburgo. Ha sofferto di un grave problema ai polmoni che l’ha vista ricoverata per lungo tempo in cui si è sentita isolata dal mondo e concentrata sulla caducità del corpo.

Nel 1970 ha studiato alla St. Martin’s School of Art di Londra prima di trasferirsi a New York.

Ha iniziato a esprimersi applicando al suo corpo strutture in legno, metallo e tessuto, come ali di tela, guanti dalle lunghe dita seducenti, una maschera ricoperta di matite e un imponente corno di unicorno.

Pellicole dalle narrazioni surreali e tragicomiche, ambientate in spazi ristretti o isolati, con scenari al limite del verosimile, pieni di elementi di distorsione. Un cinema dove la storia è stata il pretesto per un’indagine del corpo di carattere filosofico, che indagava il posto dell’individuo nell’universo.

In un depistaggio continuo, si palesano i suoi tre lungometraggi di fiction: Die Eintäzer (1978), La Ferdinanda (1981) e Buster’s Bedroom (1990) che ha visto protagonisti Donald Sutherland e Geraldine Chaplin, in cui accosta il proprio immaginario visivo a trame intricate e simboliche, con un costante riferimento a personaggi iconici come il musicista, l’attrice, la ballerina, l’infermiera, di cui ognuno è un prototipo psicologico o fantastico.

Continuando a utilizzare piume, negli anni ottanta e novanta, si è concentrata sulla creazione di occhiali da sole. Molte delle opere piumate avvolgono la figura come un bozzolo, oppure sono maschere e ventagli ideati per coprire o imprigionare il corpo.

Nel 1993 il Guggenheim di New York le ha dedicato una importante retrospettiva, la prima delle tante con cui diversi musei del mondo l’hanno omaggiata.

Tra il 2002 e il 2003, a Napoli, nella Piazza del Plebiscito, ha realizzato Spiriti di Madreperla, imponente opera costituita da 333 teschi fusi in ghisa e piantati nel selciato, ispirata dal suggestivo Cimitero delle Fontanelle, caratterizzato da un celebre ossario in cui per tradizione e devozione c’era l’abitudine di adottare dei teschi e prendersene cura. Sulla piazza erano inoltre sospesi 77 cerchi al neon, una sorta di aureole, in contrasto con i teschi.

Insignita per due volte della Gran Croce al Merito dell’Ordine di Germania, del Premio Imperiale in Giappone e della Medaglia per le Scienze e le Arti in Austria, nel 2004 è stata insignita del Barnett and Annalee Newman Award di New York e del Piepenbrock Preis fur Skulptur di Berlino nel 2006.

Nel giugno 2017 ha ricevuto il prestigioso Wilhelm Lehmbruck Prize in riconoscimento del suo lavoro e della sua poetica che hanno profondamente influenzato la scultura nel ventesimo e ventunesimo secolo.

Reflections on gender and sexuality

The problem of modernist transgenderism is that it asks us to follow the archetypes of maid and prostitutes, instead of mother and empress. I think the stress of obedience and lust is counterproductive, while to ask every man and woman to be as brave and intelligent as Joan d'Arc is valid as always. In Chinese history, there were many female warriors, which was not mentioned much in official history unfortunately.

The exaggerated criteria for "normal" male and female bodies in capitalism also has a big role in instilling dysphoria in not only us, but also cisgender people. For example, both transgender and cisgender girls are tricked by ads to think women must have big boobs and big hips, and the same thing for men.

But in reality, women come in all sizes and shapes; so are men. When one does not have the indoctrination, i.e. brainwashing, from capitalists eager to sell pills and surgeries, the dysphoria does not exist any more. In fact, dressing code so gender-separated only appeared in industrial capitalism. I once watched a TV program, where an old female surgeon told an astoundingly beautiful girl to have like 4-5 surgeries. That was a typical example of instilling dysphoria via brainwashing.

What is brainwashing? Repetition of emotion-loaded and simple words. We do not need to change our bodies; we need to change our minds. To follow the paths of Jesus Christ, Buddha, Laozi, Confucius, Muhammad, Ali, St. Thomas Aquinas, Albertus Magnus etc., and to learn the virtues. I can define myself as a girl, but I will only dress myself up when it does not bother other people. This is what I think the best way for me.

Why is everything so messed up? In a way, Baby Boomers. They do not know True Traditional Christianity and True Freedom. Both liberals and conservatives were one, before Boomers were born, in the East and West. The Booming capitalist economies made them libertine philistines. They have no sense of personal boundaries and thus they made us suffer. It is not their fault, but modernity - however, they are responsible for their actions.

Thus, I need to condemn my dad's repeated sexual abuses when I was 2 or 3, and my aunt's husband's at 12 or so to me. But I forgive them, and I understand that it might have been caused by similar traumas, as both are constantly scorned by other people of their generation as "sissies".

I think what I experience might be true for LGBTQ people. From my experience, most LGBTQ people were abused sexually at a young age, when the brain is developing fast, especially the part responsible for gender identity and sexual orientation. In a way, mutual respect and understanding are key. Of course, it is a different story if they decide to join a certain religion.

In Manchuria, often, elderly men would touch the scrotch of a young boy, saying "it is a blessing for fertility". But in fact, it is a sexual abuse, often altering our sexuality; additionally, if a boy is born, especially if the boy is pretty like a girl - like me - they would dress the little baby up as a girl, up until teenage. Why? The older generations believe that girls' lives are less worthy and so by dressing up the weak boys as girls, they hope to deceive Him so that the boys can live to adulthood. But such practices often alter the boys' sexuality, too.

I guess this is why after all the attempts, my own gender identity is still female, or rather like a tomboy. It has pros and cons. I suppose this is something different from Western countries.

The soul has no gender, but the mind does; the body has a sex.
