Why are rain frogs so round? What's /inside/ of them around such an itty bitty skeleton?

So it turns out this is a really interesting question.

The first thing we must be aware of is that rainfrogs as we see them in videos of them squeaking are not quite the same shape as they are when at rest:

But you are quite right, they are very round. This is exemplified by the skeletal photo you refer to:

So what are we seeing?

Well, firstly, note that the body cavity in these frogs actually envelops the femurs, such that only the tibiofibula (fused in frogs) and the tarsals and metatarsals are outside the body. The arms are quite similarly enveloped, but a bit of the humerus does extend outside the body cavity too. This predisposes them to a rounder body shape.

Next, note the ilia - the U-shaped bone in the pelvic region. These in some breviceptid frogs are synostotically fused with the sacrum - that is to say, they are bound by bone-based connections to the bow-shaped vertebra at their tips. This whole joint seems to be quite smooth, and as a consequence, the back of the frog is quite smooth. The other thing we can see here is that the urostyle (i.e. the frog version of a coccyx) juts quite far beyond the ischium and pubis. This extends the body cavity beyond the hips. Note also that the pelvic girdle seems to be largely below the spine, rather than the typical position for frogs behind it and continuous with it. This makes the legs sit below the spine, rather than at its end, enhnacing the vertical roundness of the animal.

Next, let’s talk some soft tissue. Now, I’m not as familiar with soft-tissue in frogs as I am their skeletons, so you’ll have to bear with me a bit (rawr). Beddard (1908!!) studied the soft tissue of Breviceps verrucosus Rapp 1842. It seems that the majority of the body of these frogs is actually muscle. Beddard noted that muscles join the leg at the knee that extend into the body cavity, such that the inclusion of the thigh in the body cavity is further accentuated by musculature. The rectus abdominalis muscle is unusually large, extending from the lower abdomen up and around the sides of the body. Indeed, this large size appears to be the pattern with all of the major muscles, though in the throat the typical arrangement of large and small muscles is somewhat reversed. On the lateral side of the head, there is a substance that is not muscle, but appears to be loose tissue in which sits what is apparently the thymus gland.

There is a very large gap between the end of the urostyle and the anus (one fifth of the total length of the frog), in which there are almost no muscles, save for the one surrounding the lower cloaca. On either side of this area, between the posterior-most muscles of the thigh, lie two large ‘lymph-hearts’, as described by Beddard. These are between one quarter and one third of the total length of the frog. A further lypmh-sac sits between these lymph-hearts and the skin of the femoral region, and they are thus probably analogous to the femoral lymph-sacs of other frogs.

I find it interesting that Beddard (1908) did not mention any glandular formations in the dorsal region. As is evidence from many images (see below), these frogs are able to secrete a white, sticky, noxious substance from their skin (which they actually have to use during amplexus, as the male is too small relative to the female to mount her properly, and so he sticks himself to her with his glandular glue… kinky).

These glands do not apparently take up a great deal of the cutaneous tissue, and so I suppose are of no consequence to the size of the frog, especially relative to its enormous muscles.

The diet of these frogs consists almost exclusively of hymenopterans and isopterans (ants and termites). Neither of these insect groups are particularly fatty, so it is little surprise that their bodies appear to contain no large fat deposits - fatty bodies extend from the gonads up to the lungs and heart, but these comprise only a tiny fraction of the frog’s mass, and don’t contribute to the round shape. Instead, their bodies are extremely muscular, allowing them to be adept burrowers, ideal for their fossorial lifestyle.

So TL;DR: rain frogs are little balls of muscle (maybe the largest muscle mass relative to body mass of any vertebrate? science just doesn’t know).

Reflections on gender and sexuality

The problem of modernist transgenderism is that it asks us to follow the archetypes of maid and prostitutes, instead of mother and empress. I think the stress of obedience and lust is counterproductive, while to ask every man and woman to be as brave and intelligent as Joan d'Arc is valid as always. In Chinese history, there were many female warriors, which was not mentioned much in official history unfortunately.

The exaggerated criteria for "normal" male and female bodies in capitalism also has a big role in instilling dysphoria in not only us, but also cisgender people. For example, both transgender and cisgender girls are tricked by ads to think women must have big boobs and big hips, and the same thing for men.

But in reality, women come in all sizes and shapes; so are men. When one does not have the indoctrination, i.e. brainwashing, from capitalists eager to sell pills and surgeries, the dysphoria does not exist any more. In fact, dressing code so gender-separated only appeared in industrial capitalism. I once watched a TV program, where an old female surgeon told an astoundingly beautiful girl to have like 4-5 surgeries. That was a typical example of instilling dysphoria via brainwashing.

What is brainwashing? Repetition of emotion-loaded and simple words. We do not need to change our bodies; we need to change our minds. To follow the paths of Jesus Christ, Buddha, Laozi, Confucius, Muhammad, Ali, St. Thomas Aquinas, Albertus Magnus etc., and to learn the virtues. I can define myself as a girl, but I will only dress myself up when it does not bother other people. This is what I think the best way for me.

Why is everything so messed up? In a way, Baby Boomers. They do not know True Traditional Christianity and True Freedom. Both liberals and conservatives were one, before Boomers were born, in the East and West. The Booming capitalist economies made them libertine philistines. They have no sense of personal boundaries and thus they made us suffer. It is not their fault, but modernity - however, they are responsible for their actions.

Thus, I need to condemn my dad's repeated sexual abuses when I was 2 or 3, and my aunt's husband's at 12 or so to me. But I forgive them, and I understand that it might have been caused by similar traumas, as both are constantly scorned by other people of their generation as "sissies".

I think what I experience might be true for LGBTQ people. From my experience, most LGBTQ people were abused sexually at a young age, when the brain is developing fast, especially the part responsible for gender identity and sexual orientation. In a way, mutual respect and understanding are key. Of course, it is a different story if they decide to join a certain religion.

In Manchuria, often, elderly men would touch the scrotch of a young boy, saying "it is a blessing for fertility". But in fact, it is a sexual abuse, often altering our sexuality; additionally, if a boy is born, especially if the boy is pretty like a girl - like me - they would dress the little baby up as a girl, up until teenage. Why? The older generations believe that girls' lives are less worthy and so by dressing up the weak boys as girls, they hope to deceive Him so that the boys can live to adulthood. But such practices often alter the boys' sexuality, too.

I guess this is why after all the attempts, my own gender identity is still female, or rather like a tomboy. It has pros and cons. I suppose this is something different from Western countries.

The soul has no gender, but the mind does; the body has a sex.

Jasper or Great Jupiter (as he likes to call himself) became a powerful player in both the business world and Dove City's underworld. His criminal activities are perpetrated by his army of followers and, he believes, overseen by the ancient Roma gods themselves. He also thought that Ocean Breeze, being a descendant of Neptune, thought she was an ally but became a threat after she exposed Jupiter’s stocks of illegal drugs which he calls them the ‘Elixir of the Gods, Euphoria.’

Bio:

Rosetta Santiago Garcia was formerly a Mexican stunt double for various female commercial actresses. However, she lost her job after she tried to make her stunts too dangerous that no company would insure her. Out of work but still hungering for thrills, Santiago, now dubbing herself as Rocketeer Rosie, began stealing jewels under Pink Cupid’s, Kaitou Black Ace’s and Kaitou Night’s noses. Unlike other villains in Dove City, Rosie’s crimes were fairly benign, she was always the one being put at risk. Ocean always worry for her safety every time she tries to stop Rosie doing more dangerous risks towards herself and others.

Bio:

Samantha Barton was abused by her mother for being overweight, that’s when she discover her powers and use them to suffocate her mother until she was presume dead. Few years later, Samantha became a worker at a night club and then started running the joint, using it for a pickpocketing business when Ocean Breeze cut off her resources for the club and then abandoning the whole business, deciding to become a villain taking the name of Scream. As Scream, she is a powerful villainess that can generate sound waves utilizing in the form of blasts and has telekinesis.

4. Ms. Carpenter

Real Name: Alys Bryn Gittins

Personality: Loyal, cocky, diligent

Bio:

Alys Bryn Gittins was a Welsh pickpocket and con artist, operating out of New York, who moved to Dove City when she attracted unwanted police attention. Alys was enlisted by Lucky March Hare to serve as Ms. Carpenter for his new Wonderland Crew. In addition to being a member and as Hare’s right hand gal of the crew, Alys used her Carpenter alias/role to start a solo career as a contractor for super criminals/villains for the construction of lairs and death traps. She also knew about Hare’s crush towards Ocean Breeze, the heroine of Dove City, and would often call her ‘Alice’ as well to give her full support towards her boss/friend.

5. The Night Raider

Bio:

Vladislav Ivanov was a Russian immigrant who began his career as a burglar and a criminal, taking the alias as the Night Raider. He was strong and uses stolen technology from Silver Tech, he became Dove City’s #1 burglar and often belittles other villains (except Scorpio), including Ocean Breeze, who sees her as a ‘child’ which sometimes irritate her but still keeps a calm mind.

6. Prof. Fear

Bio:

Emma Crane is an obsessive ex professor who uses a variety of drugs and psychological tactics to use the fear and phobias of her adversaries. She does not commit her crimes for wealth but rather, as a form of ‘research’ to further study the effects of fear (hence her alias) on humans, making Dove City residents her unwillingly guinea pigs. Her attire is a pinafore dress similar to Dorothy’s from Wizard of Oz and her name is inspired by Ichabod Crane from the Legend of Sleepy Hollow. She also carries a basket that is similar to the one Dorothy carries with her dog, Toto, inside but instead she has a sickle inside to use it to fight Ocean Breeze.

Bio:

Dr. Colton Cook devoted himself to medicine, intending to save lives, however, he failed to save a little boy’s life, which resulted him in the brink of depression and now suffer from PTSD. He then built himself a robotic suit and use it for crime, taking the name of Vascular. Using his knowledge of science, he often upgrades his suit to stop Ocean Breeze from commiting his crimes like a giant laser gun, various blades and even a jet pack for getaway escapes from authorities.

8. Mistress Monarch Mask

Madame Masque (Marvel/Iron Man)

Name: Mistress Monarch Mask

Real Name: Agatha Beatrice Augustus

Personality: Stern, emotionless, tempered

Bio:

Agatha’s mother died in childbirth, her father Marquis Florence J. Augustus had her sent to an orphanage in order to protect her from future assassinations. After revealing her true parentage, Agatha took in her father’s legacy and become the leader of the Aveda Group, an organization her father founded, becoming Mistress Monarch Mask. She had countless encounter with Ocean Breeze, including trying to steal pearls from a local sea ferry company but Ocean intervened and stopped her afterwards. Mistress Mask is both skilled in gymnastics, martial arts and handles various firearms, she’s also knows the arts of disguises.

Bio:

Mimi Chen dreams to become a ballerina but she drop out of dance school because of her desire for female domination of the dance world, planning to eliminate/enslave all male dancers. Her outfit is based on the black swan Odile from Swan Lake, has superhuman strength, durability, can shoot dark energy blasts and has the power of flight, she takes the alias of Minuet. As Minuet, she often targets male dances who were self-centered, snobbish and sometimes belittle other dancers. Ocean Doesn’t blame Minuet’s point of view towards criticism but she does not like her ‘dark sense’ of femininity, especially female domination towards the opposite sex and is worried about this kind of logic towards gender, thus why Ocean tries to emphasis Minuet.

10. King Tic Toc

Real Name: Siegfried Von Meyer

Personality: Very smart, sees things differently than others, oblivious

Bio:

Siegfried was a simple clock repair man in an ordinary clock repair shop, but then he was cornered by a group of thugs, who beat him up in his own shop and destroyed his clocks. Then one of the thugs try to burn the shop with a blow torch, however, Siegfried stop the thug but end up getting half of his face burned, causing him to scream in pain until a nearby police officer hear his pleas of cries and shot the 3 thugs in self defense, they gang was later arrested. Siegfried, on the other hand, was sent to the hospital and was discharged afterwards swore revenge on the thugs who burned his face and destroyed his shop, everything. He then dawns a clock themed costume and takes the name King Tic Toc. King Tic Toc can predict with some accuracy in how many seconds imminent events should happen and has different clockwork gadgetry which he use to stop Ocean Breeze from his crime schemes but later on, he seem to be infatuated of her beauty and sometimes, call her ‘his little die blume (flower in German)’.

Day 27.

Hai hôm nay mình cảm thấy tinh thần không còn giữ được sự thoải mái, yên ổn như trước nữa. Mình đang cố gắng nhìn nhận lí do và tìm cách giải quyết chuyện này. Việc đột nhiên tâm trạng chùn xuống cũng là dễ hiểu bởi một trong Tứ thánh đế là Khổ đế - chân lý đầu tiên để khẳng định rằng đã là người, không ai là không khổ đau, cả thân lẫn tâm!

Mình vẫn nhớ như in cái cảm giác dễ chịu vào cuối ngày khi đi ngủ, thì thầm với bản thân để ôn lại những điều đã diễn ra trong ngày và vui thích khi đối chiếu cách phản ứng của mình trong giai đoạn này với sự việc tương tự đã từng gặp phải. Và cứ thế chìm vào giấc ngủ cho đến khi báo thức kêu vào sáng hôm sau. Nhưng, kì lạ là, từ hôm qua tới giờ, có gì đó cứ quấn lấy tâm trí mình không rời mà mình cũng không cách nào giải thích rõ ràng được nó là cái gì. Kiểu, tự dưng lại có ai đó nhúng cái thìa vào cốc nước và nguấy thật mạnh để tạo ra cái phễu xoáy nhằm trộn tung tất cả mọi thứ lên vậy. Tự dưng, mình thấy không được ổn lắm.

Có lẽ, sự mất thăng bằng này xuất phát từ cái feedback của bên SE gửi vào đúng cuối tuần trong khi mình đưa file từ thứ 2 mà cứ nhận xét lắt nhắt. Thực ra, mình thấy mail chiều thứ 5 nhưng kệ đó, tối vẫn ngồi thêu hoa, để việc tới sáng th�� 6 giải quyết trong cái tâm trạng thở vắn than dài, chẳng biết cái mình sửa đã đúng ý họ chưa, làm cố-cho-xong chứ không còn nhiều nỗ lực để khiến nó tốt như trong khả năng của mình. Mình đã khá là bế tắc khi tìm source chán chê mà chẳng có cái nào ưng í nên diễn tấu theo cảm nhận từ những kinh nghiệm mình thu thập được trong 2 năm làm agency cho họ.

Rồi tới cái profile của nhà chị Bình. Mình đã cố để không hét lên rằng "Trời ơi, làm ơn tha cho em đi!" . Đã nhiều lần, ngay sau tiếng thở dài là mình chuẩn bị buông ra 1 câu-gì-đó giống mọi lần. Mình đã ráng kiểm soát cái lời không thuận miệng để nhìn nhận sự việc như nó đang diễn ra mà không chèn thêm mấy câu cao trào vào đó =)).

Nhưng, sự kiềm chế này đã khiến mình bị nén lại 1 cục đông cứng, không giải tỏa được, không phát tán thứ cảm xúc tiêu cực từ trong người ra ngoài nên làm ô-nhiễm tâm trí mình. Dường như, nó giống một sự tích cực độc hại hơn là những bước đi thuận lợi tiến tới con đường Diệt đế. Hoặc, đây là trạng thái ai cũng phải trải qua khi bắt đầu dò dẫm trên hành trình giải thoát, hoài nghi và phải tự đi tìm câu trả lời cho chính mình. Nhìn chung, mình đã kết thúc ngày làm việc cuối tuần trong tâm lí không thực sự thỏa mãn, kiểu cố lờ đi cái sự bứt rứt đang diễn ra để phỉnh mình bằng mấy câu động viên đầy sáo rỗng!

Bây giờ cũng vậy. Mình không thể tiếp tục cái tình trạng lừa dối này nữa, mong rằng khi viết ra sẽ giúp mình rà soát lại tất cả những sự việc để tìm ra được kẻ nào, thứ gì đã cố tình ngoắng cái cốc nước đục ngầu này lên vậy?

Mình đã bắt đầu buổi sáng với những thói quen mới. Dậy sớm, cho mấy đứa ăn, giãn cơ nhẹ nhàng một chút và chú tâm vào những việc giúp mình xua đi những ý nghĩ không tốt. Rồi mình định thêu thì lại sang nhà cô Nhung buôn chuyện. Mấy câu chuyện cô kể cũng giúp mình kiểm chứng những thứ mình đang đọc. Với mình, đó là sự mong muốn được sẻ chia, được có người trò chuyện, giãi bày hay đơn giản chỉ là có người nghe họ nói nên 1 tiếng đó không làm phiền mình. Mọi thứ cũng cứ thế diễn tiến rất đỗi thường nhật, ăn trưa, ngủ một lát và mình thấy đói cồn cào, đói như qua 1 đêm chưa có gì trong bụng. Thế là, mình làm mì trộn. Nhưng, cái giây phút vui sướng khi vừa mới lấp đầy dạ dày cũng trôi qua rất nhanh, trôi tuột đi với vận tốc ánh sáng và mình lại chìm vào trạng thái lờ đờ. Thậm chí, dù rất mong mỏi nhận được đồ ăn cho Cy và Hói nhưng mình cũng không thể thấy mãn nguyện như hôm trước phải gọi ship hỏa tốc đồ ăn cho Mỡ.

Mình bị làm sao thế nhỉ? Đọc sách có giúp mình lấy lại tinh thần không? Câu trả lời là không hề. Lần này, mình thực sự mất tập trung. Đầu óc mình đang mắc ở cái tầng trời nào đó, đang lặn tới mực nước biển thiếu dưỡng khí nào rồi vậy? Có một sự nhận thức cực kì rõ rệt cho việc muốn chấm dứt cái trạng thái không-thể-hiểu-nổi này!

À, trong lúc ăn mì, mình xem chương trình "Cầu thủ nhí". Tại sao nội dung về bóng đá mà 3 huấn luyện viên chia đội lại là Mâu Thủy, ST Sơn Thạch, Ali Hoàng Dương - chẳng thấy ai có chuyên môn về thể thao cả? Rồi, ai mướn ST mớm mấy cái lời ngớ ngẩn kiểu "bé về đội chú đi, chú muốn trở nên thân thiết với bé nên chú muốn là anh trai, là ba của bé". Chưa hết "con yêu ai hơn, con yêu ba hay yêu mẹ". Vẫn không xong, MC Sam thì hỏi (chắc theo format của ban tổ chức) "nếu để cho 2 con tự chọn thì 2 con thấy ai xứng đáng được vào vòng trong hơn - tự ứng cử cũng được nha". Đỉnh cao của content vô duyên là khúc Sam hỏi câu tương tự xem giữa ba, má yêu ai hơn thì có 1 bạn trả lời ba mẹ đã ly hôn lúc em 11 tuổi. Và, lại là ST, ở đâu ra cái kiểu so sánh nỗi đau vậy cha nội? "Chú rất hiểu cảm giác của con. Ba chú còn bỏ chú từ lúc chú mới được sinh ra... Chú hi vọng, con sẽ hiểu cho quyết định của người lớn và sau này, hãy nói chuyện với ba như một gia đình". Khúc này là ứa máu luôn rồi. Chao ôi, nó nhảm nhí tới mức, mình đã buột miệng chửi thề vì không thể tin nổi vào cái mình đang xem. Mình từ chối hiểu. Không rõ BTC soạn sẵn câu hỏi, tìm hiểu về gia đình thí sinh để câu view hay vì cái mục đích oái oăm gì đi chăng nữa thì mình sẽ không bao giờ bật VTV3 vào lúc 15 giờ thứ 7 hàng tuần để xem cái chương trình ngớ ngẩn này thêm 1 lần nào nữa. Thậm chí, nếu con mình sau này may mắn có tài năng, nhưng gặp các loại giám khảo như này, mình cũng sẽ từ chối tiếp tục tham gia vì sự vô duyên, vô cảm thay vì duyên dáng, tế nhị trong cách đặt câu hỏi.

Trời ơi, phải chăng mình cần học cách kiểm soát cảm xúc khi gặp những tình huống kể trên? Liệu rằng, những ngày trước, khi không gặp phải mấy sự cố này thì mình dễ dàng nhắc nhở bản thân không nên đặt quá nhiều cảm tính vào sự việc, hãy để nó như vốn có: là 1 lời nhận xét, là 1 câu chuyện, là 1 sự sắp đặt, là 1 chương trình... Còn 2 ngày này, khi thử thách được nhích lên 1 chút thì mình mới thấy rõ trong hoàn cảnh bị tác động, chi phối bởi cảm xúc quá nhiều thì mình đã đánh mất tính Trung đạo - giữ trạng thái cân bằng, không đẩy bản thân về bất cứ điểm cực đoan nào của yêu - ghét, đau khổ - hạnh phúc, sân hận - tham ái. Phải chăng, vì cuộc đời là Vô thường nên cần phải ở điểm trung dung, không nghiêng, không ngã, giữ tâm và thân được an tĩnh trong bất cứ tình huống nào?
