Last Saturday, I worked with a volunteer name Alex to introduce a new activity about fingerprints.  I've wanted to make an activity involving forensic science ever since I started Maker Corps, because it has always been an interest of mine.  

Alex and I did this by having two stations within our table.  At the first station, visitors learned that general patterns and other minute details in our fingerprints makes each one unique.  

With their new knowledge, visitors could then solve a crime using fingerprints that I collected from five different people.  Visitors were also encourage to lift their own fingerprint to identify its type, a loop, arch, or whorl. 

In addition to teaching some of the science behind shows like CSI, I also wanted to make the activity more creative and artistic.  At the other half of our activity table, we had paper, markers, and ink pads of different colors. With these materials, we encouraged visitors to create little pictures based around their fingerprint.  Penguins, flowers, and turtles were the most popular.

Overall, I thought this activity went incredibly well.  It was really great to offer the visitors choices, depending on what they wanted to do or had time for.
