ARCTIC MONKEYS 25/06/23

okay now that i've had some time to (slightly) emotionally and physically recover from yesterday, i need to flail about the highlights:

1) meeting one of my absolute favourite humans who i would never have got to know if it hadn't been for this little corner of tumblr - and then getting to share the excitement/nerves/elation/exhaustion rollercoaster of seeing am with them was just - there aren't even words for it. so special 💖

2) learning how to navigate rain ponchos

3) impulse buying too much merch (but also not regretting it. the glasgow tour poster is going to be the first thing going on my wall in my new flat)

4) the mirrorball starting to twirl just before they all came onstage and sending the colours of the afternoon sun everywhere

5) the sheer rush of the moment they all walked onstage together (also that was pretty much the only time i got to glimpse nick and matt at all 💔 from where i was standing i could mostly only see alex and jamie)

6) seeing alex a few metres away in real life after months of looking at his beautiful, dorky little expressions in photos/videos was surreal in the best possible way- there's just something so different about the way you get a sense of someone's energy when you're in the same space with them?? and as someone who's endlessly interested in people, i'm fascinated by how alex simultaneously gives off really reserved, self-contained vibes at the same time as being such a dynamic and captivating performer - like he’s so good at tapping into emotions without letting them be a door into how he’s actually feeling (if that makes any sense, my post-gig brain is not very articulate) i guess that all very much makes sense with all the stuff he's said about personas/performing, but it was still so interesting to get to really feel that sense of his presence in live time. he's definitely very much in control but in a very understated kind of way

7) a bunch of birds circling overhead on one side of the crowd, alex seeing them and dramatically declaring 'release the rest of the birds' 

8) me and the lovely human i went with turning to each other with expressions of sheer joy when the opening bars of crying lightning were played (and don't sit down. and four stars. and arabella. and - you get the picture. getting to share the sheer delight of your favourite songs being played is just the loveliest feeling 💗)

9) alex doing a quirky little 'ha ha' laugh in the middle of body paint 

10) mirrorball coinciding with the most beautiful pink dusk and half moon just above the stage, and getting to witness alex’s piano playing at the start of it

11) body paint. just. body paint. i think my soul left my body.

12) how much energy and enthusiasm alex seemed to have throughout the set - especially after the last week or so it was just the loveliest thing to see him messing about and having fun. and his voice sounded SO good. how anyone manages to sing like that (let alone sound like that less than a week after cancelling shows due to laryngitis) is an absolute mystery to me

13) alex's theatrical hand gestures for crying lightning (the one for gobstopper was a particular favourite)

14) hearing 505 when dusk has just fallen and you can see the smudged moon behind the deep indigo clouds is the only way anyone should ever hear 505 

15) alex and matt having a giggle about something mid set

16) obviously i was aware of how stupidly talented they all are - but there's something about seeing it unfold in front of you in real time that makes it really hit you. the sound wasn't great where i was for some of the time so i don't feel like i got the best audio sense of everything, but i was just so struck in particular by matt on the drums and also alex with his guitar playing. i feel like when i'm just listening to their records i'm so busy listening to alex's voice that i forget how incredible a guitar player he is and - wow. just. yeah. it honestly took my breath away.

17) getting the distinct impression that it provides alex with a sense of amusement to deliberately do that thing where he sings the lyrics at slightly different speeds to trip the crowd up

18) even though i ended up being in significant pain for the second half of the set and had to go find somewhere a little further back where i could lean against the railings (chronic pain conditions and standing for 6+ hours apparently isn't the best mix), nothing could dull how magical it was hearing all the tracks from the car that they played closer to the end. standing there in the dusk and feeling so much about everything is something i'll never forget. it truly brought home to me so poignantly everything about why am's music means so much to me and how much love i have for them 💜

19) being in the exact line of direction alex blew kisses to at the end

20) the hazy post-gig walking in the dark under lit up green trees with the lovely human i went with and our conversations about am and creativity and the courage of sharing music 💖

Anthony and Alex are both thin, wiry with strength rather than gymed out. There’s a myth, plenty of fucking myths about them, that people with wings marry each other. For a long time they didn’t have much choice. Anthony’s little boy has them, there was a video on stories on his private account. His little boy toddling around in just a nappy, the wings like a cherub fluttering erratically.

the race was... i'm both shocked and glad that this was my first ever race. waking up at 7 for it was fun as fuck i can't even lie i LOVE me an early race 💕💕 i was so hyped for it!! i didn't understand much, and i didn't have any friends to chat with yet, but it was fun. if i had been into f1 longer i would've probably been more scared of the mercs leading lap after lap, but i was blissfully unaware AND very very faithful in max... just kept repeating to myself "i'm not gonna worry about it lol" which DID work in the end. i rewatched this race for this post and man. i remember not really giving a fuck about charles dnf because i wasn't THAT much into any modern drivers yet except max LOL. 🥲🥲🥲 and i remember alex's crash being way later than it actually was in the race? maybe because of the crazy fucking red flags PLEASE 😰😰😰 george's car lighting on fire... nyck flopping... my first impression of carlos being his fucking complaint about the SUN i'm screaming... what a crazy fucking race.

after the race i was gleefully telling my dad everything (his ass was NOT waking up at 7 for this which i respect greatly) and shakingly eating breakfast (i was so excited fdjhgdhfgdfh)... and then i realised... 4 weeks without f1 😵‍💫😵‍💫 whilst in the height of my hyperfix!! how did i survive!!!

Even if he has new projects, people outside of denmark can't see that and he looks like a typical scandinavian influencer. He used to be a ray of sunshine 💔 but I understand that he has grown up and people change. I'm just afraid that I may never experience with him again what I experienced while he was on Vikings, you know, waiting for premieres, new content, all the nice things that seeing your favorite artist on television implies. Sometimes, I feel that it will never be like this again and that he will only want to work in Denmark. Dear anon, you have expressed exactly what I feel about Alex and being a part of the fandom at the moment. As someone who’d watched most of the Vikings series with my dad, I only actually joined the fandom during covid times, and while most of Alex’s funny and goofy behind the scenes videos with Marco and other colleagues/friends were already throwbacks to me, they were so fun to watch! Even the little tidbits of his daily life and the insta lives he did, they all came out as genuine and fun, they put a smile on my face and kept me in high spirits during a hospital stay. So I will always cherish these times for that. 😊 Plus, if you add Alex’s enormous talent and the values he seemingly defended back then, he did feel like a ray of sunshine, like you mentioned, and someone I was proud to support and be a fan of. And this is why it makes me sad to see all of that change little by little, as he grows distant not only from the fandom but also from the person he used to be (or at least presented himself to be) and what he stood for, in order to become just another influencer with a few mediocre projects here and there where, at least in my opinion, his talent is wasted and he can’t show his full potential and/or evolve as an actor. And yet, in a mix of nostalgia and optimism for the future, here I remain (like all of you guys) trying to prevent the fandom from dying and still wanting to see Alex succeed, both professionally and personally.

And about his projects, sometimes we’re able to see them outside of Denmark, it just takes a little longer for other countries’ platforms to distribute them (it happened to me with Nordic Narcos), or we’re eventually able to find them online, but of course it implies patience and research, and for everyone outside of the fandom he’s most likely that guy who was once in Vikings and nothing more, since none of his other projects are as popular or readily available internationally. But who knows, maybe that’s about to change and that trip with his agent to LA last year will reveal itself fruitful? (Even though I think if he’d auditioned for some role and had been chosen, we’d already have heard something about it by now. 😅)

Ok I'm honestly sad! Alex is my favorite! He is not in the main plots in episodes 1-4 and now he is going to be the last one to have his video come out which makes me think he isint important for this season. IDK if they released them in order of importance but it sure feels that way. I mean Kyle's video was just released today so Alex has to be next..... right?! Also the fact Tyler was on set way less than everyone else and he kept going back and forth to LA while everyone else stayed and filmed. This season it feels like they are giving Kyle and Maria more and Alex nothing and will sideline him. Im glad Maria and Kyle are getting more but it shouldn't have to come at the cost of sidelining Alex. I just want Alex to be at the main focus as well. I obviously want Malex but I also want more of Alex because his character has so much potential and so many stories they could do with him or just at least include him in what everyone else is doing instead of giving him a side plot away from everyone else. I mean we only get 13 episodes..... I honestly wish the show was moved to the fall line up and got 22 episodes so that all the characters and couples could have proper screen time and be built up properly and not rushed into 13 episodes. 💔

Just because they haven't spoiled what Alex is up to in the next few episodes doesn't mean he wont' be in the main plot. We know he's got scenes with Liz this season which means he is definitely going to be part of the main storyline going on, even if we don't see exactly how it connects at first. Also, as other blogs have talked about, the PR team that releases promos, and clips and stuff are a totally different department and don't necessarily run things by the people in charge of the show so just because we aren't seeing it yet doesn't mean it isn't there. We also don't know how much Tyler was on set because so far he is not big on taking pics and videos from set as we've seen in previous seasons, and his co-stars have been respectful of that. We also already knew Tyler had a 10 episode contract so we knew he was missing 3 episodes. I personally am happy to get them out of the way as early as possible so when things pick up later in the season he's there for them. I'm feeling hopeful and excited about what we are going to see for Alex this season, so don't let the PR department, or BTS content (or lack there of) get you down! Tyler seems really excited for this season so I'm holding on to that. I agree though, a few more episodes to give the show some room to breathe would be really nice and would allow for some more fun moments which I think we could use, but it is what it is unfortunately.

01)Technically, all of them. If I start to watch a show I don’t WANT to miss any episode because I could lose some plot pieces.

02)No one really. As I said, if I start to watch a show I either watch it all or drop it if I don’t like it, but I couldn’t just watch one “casually”. I can DISCOVER a show casually but then I have to decide whether I want to watch it or not.

03)“Sweet Tooth”and“American Gods”. I don’t think I will go on watching those ones.

04)If I’m RE-watching a show I love, I will usually only rewatch my favorite episodes (or even just my favorite SCENES from my favorite episodes), but if I’m watching something for the 1st time, see point 01.

10)Well.. technically “Neighbours”. I only looked for it because I wanted to see Bridget Neval. When she left I stopped looking for the following episodes but now I’m watching it again for Nicolette’s ship with Chloe and the 2 storylines are 15 years apart so...🤔

11)“Buffy-the Vampire Slayer”!🤩I have rewatched it recently after I don’t know how many years and I still remembered a lot of lines and scenes by heart!💘

12)I WISH I could say“13 Reasons Why”!!! I did finish it,but ONLY because I didn’t want miss anything during people’s reviews! I WISH I never even STARTED that smoking bullshit!!!!!!!🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮Every single episode was the epitome of BOREDOM!😴😴😴😴😴😴😴

13)“Person of Interest”. I literally started by watching a video on Shoot that ended with ep 4x11 and when the show went on I watched it only for Samantha and her ship with Shaw. Everything else I find it extremely boring. Also “Jane the Virgin”. I came for Rose x Luisa 👎, I stayed for Petra x J.R.!💞

14)The “Runaways”. The only one I’m really interested in is Carolina. 💛💙 Before that there was “Smallville”. The only character that didn’t bore me/irritate me was Chloe 💛 but then Lois came and then Jimmy and then Oliver 💚💛 and they were pretty cool too. But my main reason for watching was always Chloe (which is why I am EXTREMELY HEARTBROKEN by what I discovered about Allison Mack!😭😭😭😭😭😭😭💔💔💔💔💔💔💔).

15)“Stitchers” and “Agent Carter”. “Stitchers” I got curious because the main character was dubbed by the same voice actress who did Lyla in “Mako Mermaids” and so I started to watch ep 2x06 and at one point I had to go back and watch the ep I’ve missed and then go on (same thing that happened with “Buffy” actually, but for a different reason!😅). “Agent Carter” I stumbled upon it because it was airing before “Once Upon a Time” so I always watched the last part of the episodes... then I got curious when I saw Dottie kissing Peggy and I went back to understand what the heck was that about.😵😅

18)A lot, to be honest!X-P But let’s say “Friends”. I tried to watch some episodes and I swear to Glory I didn’t find a single funny moment, line or character!X-P

And also “Kyle XY”, expecially because they ended it on a damn cliffhanger!🤬💢Then there’s “Wicked Science” but in that case the thing is a bit more complicated and, knowing what I know, I’m ultimately glad they stopped after S2 even if the story was CLEARELY not finished and this will bother me forever!X-(((

21)The most famous toxic fandom I know is the “Star Wars” one... apart from that.. “Once Upon a Time” has a fandom that can become toxic I’d say... EDIT: I’ve finished the 2nd season of “The Wilds” and, let me tell you, that fandom is really something!X-P But, despite its toxicity, I’m not avoiding it, even if I sometimes should!X-[

22)I’d say “The Wilds” but... they are being EXTREMELY toxic against the Twilight of Adam’s characters... and I don’t mind them so I’m not entirely sure everyone will “welcome” me if I say that...;-S So far I had no big issues, though.

23)I have a very complicated relationship with both “Mako Mermaids” and “Once Upon a Time” (and with a specific thing about “Buffy”). I hate it when you critic a show and people are like: “If you always complain about that show, why don’t you just stop watching it?” and I’m like: “Because there are OTHER things about that show that I like A LOT! THAT’S why I’m disappointed whenever I see something that doesn’t make sense or that I despise... because I wish I could enjoy the show FULLY instead of seeing it ruined like this!!!X-((( If I thought the show was completely crap (COUGH! “13 Reasons Why” COUGH!) and you asked me: “Why do you keep watching it?” I would answer you: “Only to fully understand the negative reviews!😓”!!!”

the one i've read the most of: oh god i actually have no idea, there have been quite a few over the years - but my ao3 bookmarks tell me it's between merthur, drarry or destiel ( i think that's because those are just bigger fandoms with more fic content - i've definitely been more immersed in smaller fandoms that just sadly don't have the same volume of fics to read 💔)

wild card: i mean - milex. i was just innocently watching youtube videos one day and then BAM. i saw miles and alex doing their thing onstage, and there was just. yeah. no going back from there 😭

first ever ship: frerard 😂 clearly i have a weakness for best friends basically making out with each other onstage (oh, but of course frank and gerard actually DID make out) (also. don't even get me started on how alex and miles's sexual chemistry is somehow even WORSE than two men who have literally full on snogged each other multiple times onstage 😭)
