ShellShocked
After playing around with the idea of a best friends to lovers story in my head for a while, I woke up with this thought yesterday morning. It is 100% @unlikelywrestlingfan fault. So I wrote it down for her.
Summary: Trying to get ready for his next show, Alex asks his long time friend if she wouldn't mind helping him out with a move he's been thinking about.
Warnings: Language, Usage of real name due to one line I really fell in love with and had to write.
“Hey Ellie,” Patrick began as he entered his living room. “If you’re not busy today would you mind helping me out with something?”
“What did you need help with?” She asked as she turned her attention from the t.v. to her friend.
“I need to do a spot at the next show with a girl, but I don’t want it to be the same things I’ve done before. I want it to be different. I was hoping you’d try some things out with me.”
“Or you could just stop beating up women,” She joked.
“Nah. Easy way to get cheap heat.”
“Since when does Patrick Martin take the easy way out?” She asked as she leaned more forward on the couch.
“Never. Alex Shelley on the other hand…here and there,” He laughed. “So are you gonna help me or not?”
“Sure. Just take it easy on me. Remember I’m not trained for this shit.”
Ellie put the remote down on the couch and stood up. This wasn’t the first time she helped him work through some idea he had in mind for his wrestling career, probably wouldn’t be the last either. He took off his hat and tossed it onto the sofa as he met her in the middle of the room. She stood in front of him with her hands resting on her hips waiting. She could see the wheels turning in his head as his eyes were glancing up at the ceiling, temporarily lost in thought.
“So what are we doing?” Ellie finally asked.
“Okay. I was thinking instead of attacking her directly like I usually do, we could do a thing where she runs in trying to help him, but then I grab her and make her watch him getting destroyed by the crew. I just need to figure out the logistics to make it run smoothly. Alright, I think I got it. Slap me.”
“What?” Ellie asked caught off guard by his request.
“Just act like you’re going to slap me. It’ll be fine,” He assured.
“Okay,” She said, still unsure about it.
Ellis brought her arm back then swung forward, hoping the little force she planned on using would be good enough. She was surprised when he caught her wrist midair. Before she could ask him what his next move was, he spun her around calculating the movements so that the arm of the wrist he was holding was across her chest and pinning her other arm down by her side when he pulled her against him before tightening his grip slightly. She gasped when her back met her chest. His other hand went to her hair, being gentle on his friend as he moved it to the side.
“So from here I can grab onto the hair to move her head in any direction. I can fuck around with his head while he’s getting the shit beat out of him by holding his girl and making comments. I could even lick her face, or along here,” He explained as he gentle traced his fingers along the side of her neck. “They love that sick shit there.”
“Do not lick me,” Ellie warned sternly.
“I won’t. Not unless you ask nicely.” He laughed with a wink.
He let go of her wrist and the two quickly made some space between them. Ellie gently rubbed her wrist as she turned back towards him. Not that it was hurting in any way, she just felt like she had to.
“So, what do you think?” Patrick asked as he stuck his hands into his cargo short pockets.
“I think maybe you should leave that company before they corrupt you completely.” She joked as she sat back sown on the couch, pulling her legs up. “Are you sure she’ll be okay with that?”
“Pretty sure based off our history. But I’ll go over all of it with them first and adjust it however I have to.”
She nodded at him. “Sounds good to me then. Different than before, but still along the same lines. I think it’s definitely going to get the reaction you want.
“Thanks,” He smiled shyly, somewhat proud she approved of his idea. “Hey, lunch should be ready by now. Do you want to come with me to pick it up or hang out here?”
“No thanks. I’ll stay here and pic the movie. I don’t trust you to do it after the last one you made me sit through,” She answered as she grabbed the remote.
“Hey! I have great taste!”
“In food yes. In movies, no. Go pick up lunch,” Ellie said dismissing him as she began to scroll through movies on the television screen.
Patrick smiled slyly on his way out the door. Once she heard him get into his car and the engine turn on, Ellie wasn’t able to concentrate on the screen. She could only focus on the butterflies that were still fluttering around her stomach from when he had pulled her against him. And the way her skin tingled from where his fingers touched. She had kept this growing crush for her friend buried down deep inside. Not wanting to ruin what they had based on the lust filled ideas that filled her mind whenever he had his shirt off. But she didn’t know how much longer she could kid herself. This was no longer the “he’s kind of cute” thoughts she began developing long ago. They were growing stronger with each day they hung out together. The way her heart jumped when she’d see his name pop up on her phone went way past the feeling of friendship. And right now all she could focus on was how jealous she was of the girl he would be working with next weekend.

Also starring: DIY.
1920s Detroit
"Jesus, Chris, would you look at all this," Alex chuckled as he placed a cigarette between his lips. He produced a lighter from his jacket and lit the cig. Within seconds, he was happily smoking in celebration. "All this is going to ship out tomorrow through Ontario, Chicago, and all the other major cities. I could kiss that idiot Volstead for helping sign the Prohibition to law,"
Chris looked around the basement. Kegs filled with alcohol stacked from the floor to the basement ceiling. All he could see were dollar signs. Michigan was already prohibiting alcohol before the nationwide ban. Now that all of the United States was participating in it, their business would certainly start booming.
"I gotta hand it to you," he chuckled and patted Alex's back. "Your idea was a good one. Maybe even your best one yet,"
The men were in good spirits with their gang's potential increased cash flow. After a couple of minutes of talking, they decided to head back to their place. They never suspected the danger waiting for them outside.
Two men waited for them in the alleyway with guns drawn. When Alex opened the door, he cursed. Business may have been booming, but so was crime. Gangs left and right were fighting each other over goods and territory. Chris stepped out behind him and closed the door to their bar.
"Come on, gentlemen, just put away your little toys and go, yea?" Alex asked. He was the mouthpiece between him and Chris. Chris was more of the muscle.
Alex's question was answered with the two men leaving their guns drawn.
"Can we do it my way now?" Chris asked while cracking his knuckles. His fists were balled up. The man would always bring his fists to a gun fight.
Alex rolled his eyes and sighed. His head dropped back. He hated pointless violence. These men were just looking to make a name for themselves. The only name they'll be getting is the one on their headstones.
"They are new, Chris. I'm pretty sure that one pissed his pants when you- fuck!" Alex yelled and jumped.
One of the guns shot off, nearly striking him. Chris didn't hold back. He lunged towards one and punched him in the head. The bald man slumped to the ground unconscious. The other thug dropped his weapon and walked backward. With his hands raised, his back pressed against the brick wall. He was trapped.
"Before you meet the same fate as your partner here, mind answering some questions?" Alex asked. He dropped his cigarette to the ground and stepped on it. His foot twisted to extinguish the flame. The thug shook his head. "Great! Who the fuck are you and who do you work for?"
"J-Johnny Gargano. I- my partner and I just work for ourselves. They call us DIY," the man known as Johnny answered.
Alex heard very little about them. Some up and coming gang that was trying to make a name for themselves. Every time they gained momentum, they fell flat on their face. They were kind of seen as the baby brother in the Detroit gang world.
"Listen, Johnny boy, I don't want my man to hurt you. I just bought this suit, and I don't want blood on it, you know what I mean? Let us go, and I won't unleash him on you,"
Johnny nodded quickly. Alex smiled and patted the man's cheek.
"Smart man, that is a smart man, Chris. I can see you guys making it out there. You use your brain," Alex chuckled and pointed a finger at his own head. He motioned to Chris with his head to get to the car. Alex dusted off Johnny's clothes and walked behind Chris.
"You are right. I use my brain. You don't," Johnny told him. A shot rung out in the alley way.
Alex screamed in pain as he dropped to his knees. He gripped his new wound with his hand. Within seconds, his hand was drenched in blood. A string of curses flew out of his mouth. He turned his head to see Johnny holding his gun. Stupid mistake.
When Johnny's gun jammed before he could shoot Chris, the other man attacked him. Punch after punch of Chris' hand connected to his face. Johnny laid unconscious next to his bald partner. Chris only stopped when Alex told him he needed help.
"Help me up," Alex told him.
"Where are we going to take you? Alex Shelley walking into a hospital? The Detroit Press will have a field day with that one. We can just call the coppers to let them know where to pick you up,"
Alex glared at his partner. "You don't think I know that? If I am going to die it won't be in an alley way,"
Chris helped him up. Alex held his wounded arm close to his body. Every slightest movement felt like pure agony. He had to make it back to base. One of his men had to know what to do with a gunshot wound. A few of their men were veterans from the World War.
"Hey, what about her?"
Alex looked to see Chris pointing at a woman in a nurse's uniform. She wore a blue dress with a white apron to protect the dress from getting dirty from daily work activities. A satchel hung from her shoulder.
"How are you going to get her in the car? You going to ask her if she wants to help a known gang leader? I am going to bleed out for sure," Alex groaned.
"Ask?" Chris questioned. He was never one to ask. By the time Alex could attempt to stop him, Chris was already halfway across the street. The poor woman didn't know who was coming towards her.
"Miss? Excuse me, miss,"
The nurse jumped at the sudden interruption. She had just been daydreaming and didn't expect anyone out this late at night. Everyone would make sure to be in their homes to be safe. The crime activity was bad in these parts.
"Is everything alright?" The nurse asked. The stranger was disheveled, and she wondered if he had been in a fight. When he came closer to her, she noticed some blood on his hands and clothes.
"My friend and I ran into some trouble," the stranger told her. He made sure to keep his face hidden from any source of light. Alex and Chris had their faces plastered all over Detroit at this point. "Really bad men shot him, and I am afraid I am going to lose him. We've been friends since we were just kids and -"
"Oh God, I am so sorry. The police have been working so hard to bring down the crime, but they keep crawling in. Where is your friend?"
Chris couldn't believe how easy this was. He figured he would have to put the nurse over his shoulder and take her while she was kicking and screaming. No wonder Alex was more of a talker than a fighter. He would definitely have to use this tactic more in the future.
"He is just over here," Chris told her. The nurse turned the corner and stopped. She placed her hand over her mouth. Alex thought it was the severity of his injury until he looked in her eyes. A flicker of realization flashed in her eyes. She knew exactly who he was.
"You... You are Alex Shelley of the Motor City Machine Guns," she pointed out. When she turned on her heel, she was able to see the stranger's face. "And you are Chris Sabin,"
"Yeah, and you are getting in our car and fix my friend before you end up like those guys over there," Chris motioned to the unconscious DIY guys. His nice guy act was long gone. The scared woman nodded and slid into the back seat. Alex sat beside her. Chris took the driver's seat and started the car.
The car ride was quiet as Alex removed his black jacket. He tried not to curse from the pain in the presence of a lady. Poor nurse was already scared out of her mind to be in a car with known murderers. He might as well try to act somewhat civilized. Chris was certainly not going to do that.
The nurse opened the flap of her satchel. She grabbed a pair of scissors, a bottle of alcohol, some gauze, and a bandage. Alex watched as she cut the fabric of his long sleeve white shirt. Those DIY guys owed him a new shirt.
"Well?" Chris asked impatiently. "We aren't paying you by the hour,"
"Don't mind him," Alex assured her. "It's past his bedtime. He gets cranky,"
"I swear to God, Alex," the driver muttered.
"It doesn't look serious. I will clean the wound and dress it. I would buy a sling so you don't move it around too much," she advised Alex like he was a patient at the hospital.
After pouring some alcohol on the gauze, she gently started to clean the blood and the wound. Alex clenched his teeth and panted. Apologies fell from her lips as she tried to move quickly yet effectively. The bandages were wrapped around the wound on his shoulder.
Their faces were close together as she inspected her work. He found her to be a pretty little thing. Maybe they could have dated in another life. You know, a different reality where they didn't technically kidnap her. The car was uneasily silent. Alex could tell she wanted to ask if she could leave. He thought of something to break the ice.
"So, do this often?"

I have no real interest in mods aside from somewhat following the Frontier mess, but when I found out that the fairly popular old New Vegas Bounties mods included incredibly blatant references to Judge Holden and Glanton from Blood Meridian, plus a character named "Javier Sugar" who speaks several lines lifted straight from No Country for Old Men, I wanted to find out how many references to other things pop up throughout the three mods. Turns out, a LOT.
I identified some of them myself, but eventually when I realized how much time it would take for me to watch a whole playthrough or try it out myself, I decided to look up the rest on TV Tropes and put them all together in a list.
The aforementioned Judge Holden knock-off is also said to be seven-feet tall and is a child predator (though only technically implied to be in Holden's case)
The character literally named Glanton runs a group who goes around killing "tribals"
There's a character named Cormac, as in Cormac McCarthy
During the scene with "Javier Sugar", in addition to all the NCFOM quotes there's also a random quote from the movie The Outlaw Josey Wales thrown in there... to spice things up? IDK, the quote is something like "Dyin' ain't no way of livin', boy"
A character called "Harmonica" references one of the main characters of Once Upon a Time in the West
The ghoul Doc Friday references the historical figure Doc Holiday, and his revolver the Huckleberry references the famous quote from his depiction in the movie Tombstone, "I could be your huckleberry"
Marko's outfit seems to reference the character Loco from the movie The Great Silence.
The Frosthill segment of III is also lifted from The Great Silence, what with its Utah setting during the winter, the main character getting shot through the hand, and bounty hunters pretty much kill the whole town.
Aaron Flagg the cult leader seems to be inspired by Randall Flagg the Stephen King villain
The sniper Charlie Halfcocked references the U.S. Marine sniper during Vietnam, Carlos Hathcock, the previous record holder for the most kills
Tom Quigley references the movie Quigley Down Under, the titular character being played by Tom Sellick.
Enclave members Quantrill and Onoda, who keep fighting despite the Enclave's repeated defeats, are named after Confederate guerilla William Quantrill and WWII Japanese soldier Hiroo Onoda, who did the same for their sides (okay, I thought that reference was pretty good)
Eileen the Fiend = serial killer Aileen Wuornos
Tony Idaho = Tony Montana from Scarface
Tommy the former Omerta enforcer who killed a made man references Tommy DeVito from Goodfellas
Alex and his gang in Freeside reference Alex DeLarge and his droogs from A Clockwork Orange
Freddie the ghoul = Freddy Krueger
Jack, former muscle for Heck Gunderson, references the villain Jack Wilson from Shane, his revolver is called "Shane's Bane"
Albert Quisling = Vidkun Quisling
Mario Barksdale = character from The Wire
Prometheus is named after the subtitle for Frankenstein: "The modern Prometheus", his Deathclaws are Mary and Shelley
Pancho Cortina = Pancho Villa
"Squirrelly" Bill Blasius references outlaw "Curly" Bill Brocius
Angel Lee is a combination of Angel Eyes from The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly, and the actor Lee Van Cleef
Godwin, who mails out bombs, probably references Unabomber
Joe Frost = Edward Snowden
Guys fighting over treasure named Clint and Tuco
Fiend chem lab has characters Walter and Pinkman, references Breaking Bad
John Ramsey's body is put on display with a quote referencing the movie Unforgiven, "This is what happens to assassins/rangers around here".
Those are the ones that I either caught myself or saw other people list, if there's more, go ahead and add on.
Some of the historical references are kinda funny, though others are either tasteless (Aileen Wuornos) or eye-roll worthy (Carlos Hathcock = Charlie Halfcocked, GEDDIT IT'S A GUN JOKE), and the majority of the pop culture references are so blatant and so numerous that it gets annoying.
If I made my own mod or anything else, of course I too would love to stick in a bunch of references to the things I love, though I would try to be less obvious about them, put different spins on them, you know? You can't really judge mods to the same standard as the source, and I would be more forgiving if the rest of the mods didn't look like such an edgy slog.

*read horrorshow the nth time*
do you have any fav horror movies to recommend?
I've probably recommended all of these before but here we go again with the bad takes! Wahoo! OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD
The Exorcist - my most favorite horror movie ever. I don't think a lot of people find the actual spooky ghosty stuff scary (unsettling for sure) but the characters are next level and the production and acting are unmatched. Ellen Burstyn's performance as a mother losing her mind trying, and failing, to save her daughter is haunting. It also lead to me doing my best Greek grandmother impression whenever I say Dimi, so there is that.
Jacob's Ladder - an inspiration for the first Silent Hill, this movie portrays unreality as well as Perfect Blue. It's super disorienting and impactful, I watched it coming out of a project focusing on the Vietnam War and... yeah, it's pretty miserable. Although there is a lot of horrific imagery, t's a genuinely heart-breaking film in some places. The core of horror is trauma, right?
Hereditary - the ending is pretty scary, but the thing that stands out in this movie is how miserable it is. Like with the previous two I wouldn't recommend it on the fear factor, it's more of a character deconstruction through the lens of a horrifying situation. Alex Wolff's character is masterfully written and executed. Obviously I've never dealt with such severe trauma, but his response and mental decline is very relatable.
Midsommar - It's the cult movie. People say it's boring, I disagree, but it's not really scary either. More... uncomfortable. I love that the protagonist is already in such a vulnerable and destructive state. Like she's just not doing well. It's been a huge inspiration in my own writing, and Florence Pugh is lovely. Like with Anya Taylor-Joy, it was interesting to see her get so popular after being a contentiously reviewed horror movie.
Blair Witch Project - who hasn't seen this? It remains at the very top of the found footage genre for a reason, the entire thing is amazing. People say it's lost its luster with the oversaturation, but I disagree, the acting and style of the OG sets it apart.
The Witch - the first thing I ever saw Anya Taylor-Joy in before she was everywhere. Solid movie, it uses all period accurate dialogue. It's not my favorite from a horror standpoint, but the scenario alone is sickening enough to be a selling point. The dad character's actor has a nice voice, don't @ me.
Perfect Blue - there is nothing I could say about Perfect Blue that hasn't been said before, but it is a masterpiece. Watch it. If you like animation, if you like psychological studies, if you like feeling real icky, watch it. Just do it.
Se7en - more of a thriller I suppose, but it definitely works as a horror. It's up there with my faves and is another movie that's been an inspiration in my writing.
It Follows - I mention this because I was listening to the soundtrack, but its a beautifully shot film with a very strong aesthetic vision. It's the "demon STD" movie, which is dumb and imo pushes some really harmful narratives about STD's and I'd say that the far more impactful reading is sexual trauma.
Suspiria (2018) - I'm not one for body horror but there's a scene in this that just... woah. I've never seen the original but I know the new one is very different, and it's amazing. I might be alone in this but it's a shame Dakota Johnson is in such trash movies because I think she's so cute.
The Shining - another classic that must go on this list because it is, unironically, just that good. Shelley Duvall deserved better, that's a fact. That her performance was so fantastic is astounding to me. It's funny that people say that her reaction is unrealistic when that was her genuine reaction to being put in a traumatic situation. Amazing film, she is a star.
I'm definitely missing some movies but such is the way my brain doesn't work. Thank you for your time <3

Hard to Kill preview
Tumblr media
Alex Shelley vs. Moose - Shelley won the Impact men's world title in June; as of this week it's been rebranded as the TNA men's world title. Moose earned this title shot in September in a "feast or fired" match.
I'm honestly not sure there's any backstory to this match. The promotion basically went dark after December 9, and the weekly TV has been little more than clip shows and hype for the big rebranding from Impact back to TNA.
The match works without much context, though. Shelley was a mainstay with TNA from 2004 to 2012, as one of the young indy-riffic guys stuck in the midcard; since returning in 2020, he's been exalted as a veteran and a symbol of everything great about the promotion's history. Moose started with the company in 2016, a few months before Dixie Carter sold it to Anthem; he's been a mainstay ever since as they've gradually climbed out of a deep hole. In many respects, either of these men would make sense as the standard-bearer in this new era.
I don't see a title change happening here. When Shelley first won the title I figured it was a short-term thing until they could get it back on Josh Alexander, but they've seemed pretty committed to this run. My guess is that Moose is just here to give Shelley a statement win, so he can be standing tall at the end of the show when some hotter name debuts as a more serious contender. I don't know that TNA has anybody major coming in, but they made serious offers for CM Punk and Will Ospreay and didn't get either of them, so they probably spent that money on somebody...
Trinity vs. Jordynne Grace - Trinity is the defending TNA women's world champion. Grace won a "call your shot" battle royale in October to earn this match.
It's been exactly one year since Grace lost the title to Mickie James. When Mickie had to forfeit the belt due to injury, Deonna Purrazzo beat Grace to win the vacant title. Purrazzo then dropped the chammpionship to Trinity in July.
Trinity debuted with Impact/TNA back in April, almost a year after an acrimonious departure from WWE. Nevertheless, there's been a lot of rumblings about her returning to WWE very soon. Whether or not you put any stock in that, it's going to be the elephant in the room for this match.
Of course, even if Trinity is headed for the Royal Rumble in two weeks, that doesn't mean she has to lose this match. She could easily retain here and finish up at tomorrow's TV tapings. Or she could just stay in TNA. Or she could leave, but go to AEW or who-knows-where. But if I had to put money on it, I think the safest bet is on Grace winning the title.
Chris Sabin vs. El Hijo del Vikingo vs. KUSHIDA - This is a three-way bout for Sabin's TNA X division championship. Vikingo's AAA mega title is not at stake.
Originally, the X division was TNA's concept for showcasing smaller, flippier wrestlers without calling them "cruiserweights" or "junior heavyweights." De-emphasizing the weight classes worked out well for bringing in Samoa Joe, but eventually led to dopey storylines where Kevin Nash and Bully Ray wanted the belt because there was no rule that said they couldn't win it. At one point a weight limit was imposed to cut that shit out. Of late there's no sense that you have to be a particular size or work a particular style to be in contention for the X title. This match, though, is clearly about getting back to the tradition of flippy shit.
Sabin, who's been with the promotion for most of its 22 years, has held the X title ten times. Kushida was a six-time junior heavyweight champion in New Japan, but he's through being pigeonholed in that weight class so he's made TNA his new home. Vikingo is one of the flippiest flippy guys I've ever seen, which is saying a lot in an X division match. I'd say Vikingo would make a good titleholder for the new era, but he's signed to AEW and I'm not confident he'll be sticking around. I'm thinking Sabin retains.
Josh Alexander vs. Alex Hammerstone - Hammersone, who looks like Brock Lesnar and Pat McAfee had a baby, just entered free agency after a five-year run in MLW. Josh Alexander hasn't held a title for nearly a year, but at 36 he's clearly the guy you want to build the company around, since most of the other top acts are hitting 40. I assume Josh wins unless TNA thinks they can sign Hammerstone, or at least get him to commit to another match.
Ace Austin & Chris Bey vs. Zachary Wentz & Trey Miguel vs. Mike Bailey & Trent Seven vs. Zack Gibson & James Drake - ABC (Austin & Bey) are defending the TNA men's tag team belts in a four-way. They won the belts from Wentz and Miguel (of the Rascalz). Seven debuted last month to team with Bailey in a winning effort against the Rascalz. The Grizzled Young Veterans (Gibson and Drake) are making their debut with the promotion after a lengthy run in NXT.
This is probably going to be a lot of action, but it probably won't matter how it turns out. No matter who wins, I expect these teams to see a lot of each other in the next couple of months. If I have to pick a winner, I guess I'll go with Gibson and Drake.
Alisha Edwards vs. Dani Luna vs. Gisele Shaw vs. Jody Threat vs. Tasha Steelz vs. Xia Brookside - This is a six-woman "ultimate X" match. The ring will have poles or scaffolding attached to the ring posts, so that two cables can be hung up, criss-crossing about ten feet above the mat. A prize is hung where the cables meet--it could be a briefcase, but it's typically a giant red "X". The first woman to recover the prize wins the match--other than that, there are no rules. The winner will earn a future women's world title match.
The women's division feels a little weak with Mickie James, Deonna Purrazzo, and (perhaps?) Trinity leaving. Masha Slamovich, Killer Kelly, Jessicka Havok, and Courtney Rush aren't booked for this show (so far) and I haven't seen TNA make a big deal out of re-signing any of them (yet). So it's probably time for one or two of the women in this match to step up as a top contender. Luna and Brookside, who came over after the shutdown of NXT UK, probably have the most long-term potential. I wouldn't sleep on Steelz, though.
Anyone could win this, really. It could be someone they're building up for a big push heading into the April PPV, or it could be someone they're just feeding to the champion next week on TV.
Dirty Dango vs. PCO - Dango is the wrestler formerly known as Fandango in WWE, but of late he's reinvented himself as a bitter veteran heel, because heaven knows we don't have enough of those in wrestling. PCO is the wrestler formerly known as Quebecer Pierre in WWE, but a few years back he reinvented himself as a Frankenstein monster, which is a much cooler idea. I'm pretty sure PCO wins, unless he's leaving the promotion soon.
Tommy Dreamer vs. Crazzy Steve - This is scheduled for the pre-show. Dreamer's TNA digital media title is on the line. I think I heard Steve turned on Black Taurus and got more edgelord-y than usual, but I haven't actually seen him in a long time. Dreamer probably still has value as an old-timer wrestler, but not as a champion. I'd give the belt to Steve, but I'm not counting on a title change.
Eric Young & Frankie Kazarian vs. Eddie Edwards & Brian Myers - Another pre-show match. Edwards used to lead the "entitled journeymen" stable Honor No More, and Myers used to be in an "entitled journeymen" tag team with Matt Cardona, and somewhere along the line they just got thrown together to complain about how the promotion doesn't appreciate them enough. EY and Kaz have been in and out of this company for twenty years; I feel like they used to be in a faction together but I don't care enough to look it up. This one could go either way.
Rich Swann vs. Steve Maclin - Still another pre-show match. Both of these guys have been Impact world champions, so I'm not sure what they're doing so far down the card. I'm guessing that only the winner of this match will get a chance to do something about that. I'm thinking Maclin wins.

Off to The Races
Oh, hey there. I just moved in. How's it going? Nice to meet you. My name is Mike but for the purposes of this site, it's Drop Toe Hold Your Horses. Catchy, right? I'm pretty much only here at the insistence of @obsoleteobsessor but as time goes on, I will be searching out wrestling and The Simpsons content. Not The Simpsons Wrestling content. Dreadful PS1 game.
If Drop Toe Hold Your Horses is too long, feel free to use DTHYH, DTYH, or even DYH. If you think that last one doesn't make sense, I direct you to the Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin t-shirt from 2007, that referred to the Motor City Machine Guns as the MMG.
I should also point out I don't condone violence of any kind towards actual, real-life horses. Violence towards make-believe, fictional horses? Absolutely! I shot an imaginary horse once.
When I was 16, I was studying Drama & Theatre and one lesson was dedicated to Mime. None of us gave it much thought once the hour was up, apart from one girl, who arrived at the next session riding an imaginary horse. She then tied the horse to an imaginary post, removed its imaginary saddle, and fed it an imaginary carrot. Amusing at first, not so much when it's seven weeks later and she's still committed to the bit.
Unfortunately, around that seven week mark, the girl tripped up as she was making her entrance. People were quick to check on her but not the horse, who I imagined was having a hard time getting back up. As the girl returned to her feet and dusted herself off, her horse stayed down. I mentioned to the girl that I thought the horse had broken its leg and if she knew what that meant. She did not. I cocked my imaginary shotgun and attempted to put the imaginary horse out of its imaginary misery.
The girl was quite distressed over my actions until the following week, I told her I had taken the horse to an imaginary hospital and that it had made a full imaginary recovery. However, to avoid any future incidents, we agreed the horse should probably stay in its imaginary stable going forward.
Now that I'm older, I have a better understanding of the bond between a person and their horse-that-isn't-a-horse. I have two hobby horses called Douglas & Elsie McGuire, and they've been happily married since 2017.
Anyway, I've gone on long enough. I better finish unpacking. See you around.

Alex Shelley vs Tom Lawlor
Ever since this match was announced last week, it had been met with high levels of intrigue. Tom Lawlor and Alex Shelley were two of the best technical wrestlers in the world, and their matchup promised to be a technical battle for the ages. Alex Shelley, a more traditional technical wrestler, while Tom Lawlor was more trained in shoot style, MMA like fighting. In this clash of technical styles, it would be interesting to see which reigned supreme.
The referee called for the bell, and our match was underway! Shelley and Lawlor lock up, and after a few moments of jockeying for position, the advantage goes to Lawlor, who manages to trap Shelley’s arm, before pulling him in and trapping Shelley’s head and neck in a cravate. Shelley tried to pick at Lawlor’s fingers to release the hold, but Lawlor kept his hands locked, and continued to increase the torque. Shelley tried to bring his hands down on Lawlor’s arms to break the hold, but Lawlor actually released the hold momentarily to dodge the swipe from Shelley, before locking the hold back on. Shelley then attempted to roll out of it, but Lawlor rolled with him, and now Lawlor had Shelley trapped in a seated position with the cravate still on, Lawlor up on a knee to increase his leverage and continue to twist down on Shelley’s neck. Shelley managed to pull himself up to a knee, and then picked Lawlor’s fingers again, successfully getting him to release the hold, before twisting Lawlor’s arm back into a hammerlock, and then transitioning that into a cravate of his own! Shelley now the one applying pressure to Lawlor’s neck!
Lawlor dropped down, forcing Shelley to transition the cravate into a front facelock, which allowed Lawlor to then pick Shelley’s arm and trap him in a fujiwara armbar for a second, before Shelley managed to roll through and trap Lawlor with a heel hold! Shelley twisted Lawlor’s ankle, before flipping him over and tying up his legs. Shelley tried to lock in some sort of modified STF, but Lawlor wasn’t having any of it, so instead Shelley released his legs and picked an arm, trying to lock in some sort of armbar, or maybe somehow slip into the Border City Stretch, but Lawlor escaped that too, catching Shelley with a boot before getting back to his feet. Shelley shook the kick off and got back to his feet as well, charging Lawlor and taking him down with a shoulder tackle, but Lawlor used the momentum and rolled backwards and up to his feet, before picking Shelley’s legs and taking him down! Lawlor tried to lock in a knee bar, but Shelley kicked him off and slid into a drop down position as Lawlor hit the ropes, Lawlor leaping over Shelley as he came back, and as Alex Shelley got up, rolled over his back and landed on his feet. Lawlor shoved Shelley into the ropes, and on the rebound caught Shelley with a dropkick right to the face, taking him down!
Shelley crawled to the corner, and Lawlor measured him before charging Shelley, but Shelley managed to dodge, slipping behind Lawlor before catching him with an enziguri to the back of the head! Lawlor was stunned, and Shelley grabbed his head, before using the ropes to plant Lawlor with a Tornado DDT! Lawlor was spiked on the top of his head, before rolling out onto the apron to recover. Shelley followed him out there, and tried to lift Lawlor back up to his feet, but Lawlor caught Shelley with a shot to the gut, before standing up and nailing Shelley with a stiff looking forearm. The shots from Lawlor kept coming, before Lawlor took a few steps back and attempted a rolling elbow on Shelley, but Shelley ducked it, and wrapped his arms around Lawlor’s waist, before charging forward and driving Lawlor into the ring post! Lawlor was stunned, and Shelley used the opportunity to turn Lawlor back around, and drop him with a DDT on the apron! Tom Lawlor crashed head first down onto the hardest part of the ring, and then down to the floor on the outside!
Shelley went for a walk around the ring to compose himself and catch his breath for a second, as Lawlor was still laid out on the outside. The ref, Bryce Remsburg for this match, told Shelley to bring it back into the ring, and Shelley obliged, tossing Tom Lawlor back into the ring before sliding back in himself. Shelley watched and measured Lawlor as he used the corner to pull himself back up, before charging at Lawlor. Lawlor got out of the way, and tried to nail Shelley with a big forearm, but Shelley caught Lawlor, trying to drive him into the turnbuckles with a flatliner, but Lawlor caught Shelley with several hard elbows, breaking Shelley’s grip on him. Shelley stumbled back, holding his head, perhaps his equilibrium a little thrown off by those shots to the ear. Lawlor charged Shelley, before going for a wheelbarrow, which he rolled through into a victory roll, but rather than pin Shelley, he got up and twisted Shelley’s legs around his own, locking in a knee bar! Lawlor had Shelley trapped in the knee bar in the middle of the ring! Lawlor wrenched back on the hold, as Bryce asked Shelley if he wanted to give up. Shelley insisted he didn’t, but the pain on his face as Lawlor continued to wrench back with the hold told a different story! Shelley may be just seconds away from tapping out to Tom Lawlor!
Shelley was pulling on his own hair, trying to fight through the pain, trying not to submit while simultaneously trying to figure a way out of this hold! Lawlor continued to wrench back on the knee bar, practically trying to tear Shelley’s ACL! A hold like this can leave a competitor on the shelf for months, if not permanently crippled! Shelley began to rock himself, trying to turn Lawlor over, which would reverse the pressure on the hold to Lawlor, but as Shelley rolled, managing to turn Lawlor over for a second, Lawlor knew to roll with Shelley, and managed to roll through and keep the hold locked in and the pressure on Shelley’s knees! Shelley once again told Bryce that he was fine and didn’t want to submit, but the pain on Shelley’s face told a much different story. Shelley began to reach out and try to drag both himself and Tom Lawlor to the ropes, and when that didn’t quite seem to work, Shelley began to try and pry at the legs of Lawlor, managing to start to pick away at one of Lawlor’s ankles, but Lawlor shut that down quickly, and kept the hold locked in! Shelley let out another cry of agony, but with one final last gasp of effort, managed to pull himself to the ropes and force a break!
Lawlor kept the hold on until the referee’s count of four, making sure to milk every last ounce of punishment he could out of the hold, until he had to let it go or face disqualification. While many matches in MPW had more relaxed rules, referees would tailor the match to those in it. Both Tom Lawlor and Alex Shelley being traditional grapplers, the full rulebook would be in play tonight, disqualifications included. Lawlor got back to his feet and grabbed Shelley’s leg, catching it with a kick that caused Shelley to let out another cry of agony. Alex Shelley has a history of torn ACL’s, it’s one of the things that forced him to retire from Professional Wrestling for a short time, and the plan of attack here for Tom Lawlor appeared to be to go after those frequently injured legs of Alex Shelley. Lawlor caught Shelley with another kick, right to the soft of the knee, which caused Shelley more excruciating pain. Shelley dragged himself to the corner and did his best to stand back up, but all it earned him was a brutal shot with the forearm from Tom Lawlor. Lawlor then tried to once again go for Shelley’s legs, but a knee to the head from Shelley backed him off! Lawlor stumbled out of the corner, and Shelley hobbled over, catching Lawlor with a few choice knees to the ribcage. Lawlor caught one of Shelley’s legs though, and attempted a dragon screw, but Shelley stepped through and blocked it, leaving Lawlor sitting on his ass, in prime position to get blasted with a Superkick from Alex Shelley right to the side of the head! That kick ROCKED Lawlor, and he looked like he may not know where he even is!
Lawlor rolled to the outside apron again, and Shelley tried to pull him back into the ring, but Lawlor caught him with a forearm. Shelley stumbled, before Lawlor sweeped the legs out from under Shelley, and tried to vault over the ropes into a modified rear naked choke, but Shelley didn’t even let him get it in before rolling through, into a quick pin attempt!
1… Kickout!
Lawlor manages to escape, and get back to his feet, grabbing Shelley and driving his bad leg down into Lawlor’s knee with a shinbreaker, but Shelley fires back with a knee to the face, sending Lawlor stumbling back! However, Lawlor is quick to recover, and launches himself forward, nailing Shelley right in the bad knee with a low dropkick! Alex Shelley is taken down once again, and once again finds himself clutching his own knee! Tom Lawlor’s gameplan here has worked to perfection! Lawlor dropped into the cover on Shelley!
1… Kickout!
A quick kickout there from Shelley, but as he kicks out, he goes right back to grabbing at the leg. Lawlor grabs Shelley’s leg away from him and catches him with another kick to the soft part of the knee, before then trapping the leg in a leg bar, wrenching back on the hold! Once again, Shelley is left riving in agony in the leg lock, as Lawlor continued to torque back on the hold! Lawlor stands up with the leg, before snapping down with it, once again causing Alex Shelley a great deal of pain! Lawlor stalked Shelley as Shelley tried to drag himself up to his feet, eventually being able to stand but not for long as he fell as soon as he tried to put weight on the leg. Lawlor grabbed at Shelley again, trying to pick the leg again, but a few clubbing shots from Shelley prevented that from happening. Shelley tried to turn it around and go for Sliced Bread, but Lawlor easily shoved Shelley off into the corner. Lawlor charged Shelley, but he was caught, before being driven face first into the turnbuckles with a flatliner from Alex Shelley! Lawlor’s head snapped back on impact, and once again Lawlor found himself in a daze. Shelley took a few moments to try and stretch out his leg, just trying to get some feeling back in it, before attempting to stand. He was on shaky legs but Shelley was up, and dragging Lawlor back up with him, before Shelley caught Lawlor with a stiff forearm shot to the face. Lawlor looked to be out on his feet for a moment, before Lawlor fired back with an equally brutal looking and brutal sounding forearm. Lawlor fired back with multiple forearm strikes to Shelley, before charging up and going for a clothesline, but Shelley ducked it, before lifting Lawlor up onto the ropes, and driving him to the mat with a Dragon Screw Neck Whip! Lawlor held his neck, as Shelley lifted him back up to his feet, and drove him into the mat with a back suplex!
Shelley dragged Lawlor back up again, and once again went for Sliced Bread, but Lawlor kicked Shelley’s bad leg again, before whipping Shelley into the corner, and charging in behind him, catching Shelley with a chop block, dropping Shelley to his knees and causing Shelley to land with his face on the second turnbuckle. Lawlor kicked the buckle up into Shelley’s face, causing Shelley to be sent staggering backwards, stunned. Lawlor then picked one of Shelley’s legs again, trapping it and grapevining it as he took Shelley down, locking in an STF! Lawlor wrenched back on the hold, putting a great deal of pressure back on both Shelley’s back and his leg! Shelley tried dragging himself towards the ropes as referee Bryce Remsburg asked him if he wanted to quit, Shelley refusing to do so as he continued to drag himself to the ropes!
Shelley continued to scratch and claw the entire way to the ropes, until he finally got there, forcing a rope break! Once again, Lawlor kept the hold on until 4, before releasing the hold at the last possible second he could without being disqualified. Lawlor was clearly frustrated, but he couldn’t get caught up in his feelings here. Lawlor had to stay in the fight. Shelley pulled himself to the outside on the apron, and started to use the ropes to help himself get up. Just as he did though, Lawlor came charging in and knocked Shelley off the apron with a running dropkick! Shelley landed on his feet, but as he stuck the landing and turned around, still favoring that leg, Tom came flying through the ropes, taking Shelley out with a Somersault Plancha! Tom launched himself with the force of a cannonball, and sent both Shelley and himself crashing into the barricade! Tom quickly got back to his feet, holding his neck, and looking down at Shelley with nothing but malice in his eyes. Tom lifted Shelley back up, before crotching Shelley on the steel guardrail, and chopping him in the chest to stun him.
Tom then climbed back up onto the apron, and shouted for some of the fans who were still straggling in the front row to move. Once they did, Tom charged and leaped off the apron, crashing into Shelley with a flipping senton that sent him careening off the guardrail, and into the chairs! Shelley may have been out cold, but even if he wasn’t, that had to hurt! Tom dragged Shelley back over the guardrail, and towards the ring. Tom pulled Shelley up onto the apron by his hair, despite the ref demanding that Tom get off of his hair. Tom then lifted Shelley up, before spiking him down right on the apron with an Over the Shoulder Tombstone Piledriver on the hardest part of the ring!
Tom rolled Shelley back inside, and went for a cover!
1….2… Kickout!
Shelley stays alive again! Alex Shelley was still in this fight! Lawlor was beginning to grow frustrated, and huffed as he lifted Alex Shelley back up to his feet. He dragged Shelley up, and tosses Shelley overhead with a german suplex… but Shelley lands on his feet! Shelley manages to flip himself over, and land on his feet, before trying to lock in a sleeper hold on Lawlor!  Lawlor struggled, but was quickly going red in the face from the choke. Lawlor reached behind him and tried to pry Shelley off of him, eventually managing to do just that and toss Shelley down to the mat.
Lawlor stumbled back into the corner to try and regain himself, and tried to suck some air back into his lungs. Shelley got back to his feet, and tried to charge Tom in the corner, but as he leaped at Tom, Tom suddenly caught him in mid air, and held him up, walking him into the middle of the ring with an impressive show of strength, and tossing Shelley overhead with a delayed exploder suplex! Tom then collapsed down to the mat, both men absolutely exhausted after what had already been a thoroughly exhausting matchup! Tom just manages to drape an arm over Shelley, making a cover.
1….2…. Kickout!
Shelley kicks out again! Tom runs a hand through his hair, and pulls himself back up to his feet, waiting for Shelley to get up. As Shelley pulled himself up to his knees, Tom blasted him in the chest with a stiff kick, the thud of which echoing throughout the Cuban Club. Shelley grimaced in pain, and Tom caught him with another kick, which caused him to fall down to his hands, and press his forehead into the mat from the pain. Tom was known as a vicious striker, with perhaps some of the hardest kicks and chops in all of professional wrestling. Tom slipped behind Shelley as he was still recovering, and lifted him up, before tossing him overhead with a deadlift German Suplex! Tom made another cover on Shelley!
1….2…. Kickout!
Shelley manages to stay alive again, and Tom curses under his breath, wondering just what it was going to take to put this one away for good. Tom looks down at Shelley, who was still favoring the leg he’d been targeting all matchup. Tom reached down to try and lock in another kneebar, but Shelley goes for Tom’s eyes! Tom is blinded by Shelley digging his fingers into his eyes! Tom clutches at his face, blinded, and takes a blind swing at Shelley that misses, before Shelley plants Tom with the Shell Shock! Tom Lawlor’s head was spiked right down onto the mat! Cover!
1….2….3!
New look, new attitude, Alex Shelley is victorious!

200 Films of 1952
Only 20 films to go now!
Film number 180: Meet Danny Wilson
Release date: April 1st, 1952
Studio: Universal
Genre: musical
Director: Joseph Pevney
Producer: Leonard Goldstein
Actors: Frank Sinatra, Shelley Winters, Alex Nicol
Plot Summary: Small time crooner Danny Wilson makes a deal with a gangster to fast-track his career. He becomes a huge success overnight, but things get complicated when Danny and his obsessively loyal friend Mike both fall for the same girl... and she has her own ties to the gangster.
My Rating (out of five stars): ***
I was really curious to see this one, because it's notoriously hard to find, and there are legendary stories about how much Sinatra and Winters hated each other. Like screaming matches and throwing things kind of hate! The film turned out to be interesting in a few ways, even if it is far from great. It’s a musical with an unusually dark side and a love triangle that ends in an unexpected way. Amazingly, the spite the two leads felt for each other didn’t translate to the screen. (Spoilers!)
The Good:
Frank Sinatra. Of course his singing was lovely, but his acting really stood out as well. It’s not surprising that his Oscar winning turn in From Here to Eternity was only a year away. I especially liked his lighter moments in the film, he had a very natural almost boyish playfulness that I found charming.
The music! There was a lot of music in this, but it wasn’t only quantity- the quality of the material and the performances were top notch. It was basically a greatest hits selection.
Shelley Winters. I enjoyed seeing a lighter side of her as well. Although her role required more serious drama as the film went on, I liked seeing her play something that wasn’t a tragedy. Her smiling jovial side was pretty irresistible.
This musical had a darker edge that was nothing like the MGM musicals Sinatra starred in previously. It didn’t always work, but I appreciated that the attempt was made.
The love triangle played out differently than I expected, which impressed me.
The cameo of Tony Curtis and Jeff Chandler in a nightclub scene was fun. Even if he is on screen for three seconds, Chandler still makes me swoon a little!
I loved that the penultimate scene was actually filmed on location at Wrigley Field.
The Bad:
Seeing a 37-year-old unhealthily thin-looking Sinatra being portrayed as a hot new teen idol felt kind of ridiculous to me. Yes, he certainly was back in the 30s and 40s, but it felt like a stretch for 1952.
I adore Raymond Burr, but he didn’t work as a threatening gangster for me. There was nothing wrong with his performance per se, he’s a great actor. He just didn’t seem intimidating enough.
The character Mike was kind of blah and milquetoast. The actor who played him, Alex Nicol, was appealing, and I understand why Joy fell for him, but the script gave him little to work with.
The visual look of the film overall was kind of non-descript and pedestrian. The “growing success” montages were laughable trope-fests! The musical performances were also not very creatively staged or shot. The only one that stands out in my memory is the duet between Sinatra and Winters.
Sometimes things felt a bit disjointed in tone- there was just an element of something not clicking overall.
The plot was also pretty implausible on multiple fronts. One example? When you kill the head gangster of a local mob, your problem’s solved for life, right? Nobody else will ever come after you... right?
The fact that Mike got shot in the back from only a few feet away and managed to survive was a most miraculous, preposterous recovery.

Anthony’s Stupid Daily Blog (450): Sat 10th Jun 2023
Today while I was (pretending to be) working my manager came over to tell me that today was the one year anniversary of me starting work at the factory! I know it's a cliche but fucking hell how time sure does fly. Whenever I reach milestones like this or birthdays or New Year I always think of a quite from the novel Go Ask Alice in which one of the characters says "Time seems so endless but moves so fast" and I don't think a truer statement has ever been made about life. retty much every day that I've worked at this place I've gone to my work station knowing that I've got a 10 hour shift ahead of me wondering what the hell I'm going to think about in order to pass the time. As the seconds, minutes and hours tick away it feels like the day is never going to end and then all of a sudden I've been there for a whole fucking year! I really can't get aross just how grateful I stumbled into this job quite randomly. After realizing that I'd made a huge mistake in working for the bank I came home one day feeling incredibly depressed but for some reason some long lost region of my brain prompted me to check to see if there were any factory jobs going in the area and to my amazement there was one so I applied for it and received an interview the next day which lasted less than a minute, consisted of hardly any questions and they told me that they wanted me to start in a weeks time. I doubt that I will ever get a job so easily again but I don't know that I want another job because although factory work is boring as shit that's exactly what I want. I never want another job where I have to talk to customers either face to face or on the phone or on WhatsApp or whatever holographic technology Meta is going to punish customer service workers with next. I've always wanted a job that was so god damn brainless that you can do it without even thinking and spend your entire shift daydreaming. Some people may say this smacks of a lack of ambition but as I've previously said I hate people so I don't care what those cunts say. I still haven't been made permanent yet but I'm hoping that I will be because this is quite simply the greatest job I have ever had I checked out last night's Impact Slammiversary show and was delighted to see that Alex Shelley won the world title. I've followed Impact since year two and I've watched as talented performer after talented performer has been denied their chance at the top (or even the lower mid card) so it's great to see that they've given Shelley a shot with the main prize. There are so many wrestlers (not just in Impact but in WWE as well) who I feel were around for so long and worked so hard but never got a run with the belt that I think the companies could have just given them a title run as a thank you more than anything. Mr Perfect, William Regal, Earthquake, Umaga, A-Train, Brian Kendrick (Before he was outed as a mental holocaust denier), Damien Sandow the list goes on. Just give them a go with the belt and if it doesn't work just take it off them again and at the very least they'll be able to tell their kids they were the world champion once.

Alex was well aware that he asked a stupid question. It was easily the dumbest question in the world. What was he even asking? He couldn't pinpoint the exact meaning behind that question.
Do you often heal people in the back of a car?
Do you often help federally wanted murderers?
Do you often get kidnapped?
Her eyebrows furrowed in confusion. Several times, her mouth opened and closed. Alex hoped that she would just ignore the question and pretend like it never happened. Chris certainly didn't. He didn't even make an actual attempt to try to hide it.
The driver snorted and pretended that he sneezed. He made a poor attempt to keep his eyes on the road. His body shook as he laughed. A couple of times he had to catch himself from drifting off to the sidewalks. Several times Alex could hear his best friends muttering oh Alex.
"If you turn right, I live in the apartments halfway down the block," the nurse interrupted. Alex told him to turn the car right to get her home safely. Chris did as he was ordered. He was still trying to catch his breath. The mobster life didn't have many funny moments, but this one certainly took the cake.
"Right here is fine," she informed the driver. Alex looked out the window to see a store. He reasoned that the woman didn't want them to know where she lived. There was no way he could blame her. They weren't exactly portrayed as the best men around on the Detroit Press. The car came to a stop.
"I am sorry again. Do you want me to walk you up? I could just walk you to the building. It doesn't have to be your front door unless you want it to be," Alex said. His brown eyes lingered on her. Chris groaned in pain. His best friend could not get the hint that she wanted nothing to do with them.
"I think I can find my own way, thanks. I hope you feel better." she told him. The mobster was confused if it was something she normally told her patients or if she meant it. Even if it was to him. An idiot that was shot in an alleyway with a best friend that was currently hiding his head in the wheel laughing.
The nurse left the car and walked through the alleyway. Her apartment must be somewhere in the back. Alex took a breath that he didn't realize he was holding. The car was tense before Chris decided to break the silence.
"You know, I've been shot, I've been beaten, and I've had bones broken, but that was probably the most painful thing I have ever seen in my entire life." Chris admitted. He placed a hand over his heart and gritted his teeth.
Alex glared at him. "Just drive us home,"
During the ride home, he noticed the nurse left her satchel. There was absolutely no way he could just walk into the hospital and turn it into lost and found. Companies were handing out severe penalties for helping mobsters. The woman already didn't like him enough. He didn't need to add to the list. He opened the satchel to see if he could learn anything about her.
Various medical supplies were left in there. Some of them were things he used on him. Alex continued to rummage through the bag. There wasn't much to really identify her. He noticed some writing in the side pocket.
Evelyn,
Remember your pledge.
Mom and Dad
A knock on the window made him jump. Chris opened the back door. "Come on, Romeo,"
"Evelyn,"
"You got shot in the shoulder, not the head. You know your name, Alex. What are you talking about?"
"Her name is Evelyn," Alex answered. He showed him the satchel that she had left in the car. "I have to return this to her somehow,"
"I can guarantee that poor girl is going to never walk alone ever again even if it's to get mail. We are never going to see her again. Just throw it away," Chris shrugged.
Alex looked at the bag. He was probably right, but he couldn't find himself able to throw it away. Something kept telling him that they would run into each other again. He could feel it in his bones.
During the week, he found himself thinking about Evelyn. It didn't matter the time of day. When he woke up, his thoughts drifted to her. In "business" meetings, he wondered if she was working on a patient. As he drifted off to sleep, the nurse's face was the last thing he saw. Alex had to get another shot at her. Fate would be on his side on a rainy Friday night.
Men and women alike were looking for a fun night out after a long week of work. They were used to Alcohol was banned across the nation. They needed an outlet, and speakeasies were the best place to do so.
Different types of speakeasies were opening around Detroit. S and S seemed to be the only ones that could withstand the police raids and federal Prohibition agents. With the knowledge that they had a low chance of being arrested, S and S was a hot spot to hit up when looking for a good time.
The owners were normally amongst the people. No one really heckled them. The people wanted their alcohol and Shelley and Sabin kept the police officers away. It was a win-win for both sides. That's why it wasn't a surprise when Alex and Chris were getting ready to perform that night.
Ever since they were young, they played in a band. Alex was the singer, and Chris was on guitar. They had a couple of their other friends join in, too. This was a fun activity for them and gave them a break from the daily mob life.
"You sure you up to sing tonight?" Chris asked. The slightly taller man looked at his best friend. Sure, Alex was a pain in the ass, but he was his pain in the ass. Currently, that pain in the ass was looking at the musical numbers they would be performing.
They liked to keep their set small so the patrons at their speakeasy could mingle.
Alex smiled at his partner. This was always his way of asking if he was okay. He'd never directly ask it. Just ask about a task they had to do and see if he was up to it or not.
"I'm fine, Chris. My arm has been in a sling to heal quicker. You have been doing almost all the work here. I think I am going to pull through,"
When he said sling, his mind wandered to Evelyn. He still held on to her satchel. He hid it in his desk drawer in his office. Chris would tease him forever if he saw it.
"Well, come on then," Chris told him roughly. Alex stood up from his desk chair and followed Chris to the back of the wooden stage. The black curtains hid them from the audience.
"We have a special band for you all tonight, and Detroit, I don't think you are ready for this one," Alicia Taylor spoke through the microphone. She even added a little attitude with a shrug.
The crowd started to cheer. They egged her on to announce the special band. Alex and Chris broke out into a smile when they started to chant their names.
"Then let me be the first to welcome our special guests and my bosses, Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin," she announced loudly.
The crowd clapped and cheered. The MCMGs may be wanted criminals on the outside, but to these people, they were heroes.
Alicia walked off the stage as Alex and Chris made their way on. Alex walked to the microphone and adjusted it to his height. He moved his hair out of the way. His eyes scanned the crowd to see some familiar faces. His light brown eyes stopped on one particular person. He wasn't familiar with her yet, but he definitely wanted to get familiar with her.
Evelyn seemed intrigued that he was on the stage. She might think he was insane for being shot and then being on stage a week later. At least she didn't look terrified to see him. Then again, she could be so drunk that she has no idea she's at a place owned by two guys that kidnapped her. Either way, she was at his speakeasy, and he was going to make the most out of it.
He smiled at her shyly.
To his shock, she smiled back.

“Is something wrong?”
Chris asked, sounding worried. I let out a sigh, and nodded slightly, before pulling away from him to sit on the bed. He sat next to me, and frowned, as he took my hand in his, waiting for me to explain.
“Look Chris, I want you to know, I’m really sorry. But..I-I think I may have started to feel something for someone else.” I admitted.
I wanted to keep Alex’s name out of it. He was drunk. He didn’t know what he was doing, but it didn’t change the fact, that I felt something for him, I kissed him back.
His face fell. “Wha-how-umm..when?” He choked out, his voice cracking.
I rubbed my eyes. “I don’t know..it just kinda happened, I didn’t plan on it. I didn’t expect it, and I most definitely didn’t want this to happen. But it did, and I didn’t wanna keep it from you.”
He nodded, and took a deep breath, I felt horrible. I never intended to hurt him. “Well..who is this guy? A-Are you gonna act on these feelings?” He asked, a pained tone in his voice.
I hadn’t even given any thought to what I was gonna do about it. I couldn’t hurt Chris anymore. He’d be crushed if he knew it was Alex. I shook my head, and sighed. “No, I’m not gonna act on them. And, I’m not gonna tell you who the guy is. It’s not his fault. I just..I didn’t wanna continue this, if I’m falling for someone else. It’s not fair to you.”
He breathed a laugh. “Well..thanks? I guess? I mean..in a weird way, you did what was right.” He said softly. “So..I guess, we’re over then?” He added, I nodded in response, not knowing what else to say. He sighed, and put his arm around me, pulling me to his chest. “I can’t help but feel like this is my fault.”
“This isn’t your fault Chris. It’s not anyone’s fault. It’s just something that happened.” I explained.
He nodded. “Yeah..maybe. But, I should’ve tried harder. I should’ve cared more. I’m sorry..”
“You don’t have to be sorry Chris. I don’t blame you for any of this, and you shouldn’t blame yourself either.” I said calmly, before letting a few moments of silence go by.
“Chris?” I asked, my voice quiet. He hummed in response. “I think we both need to get some sleep.” He nodded in agreement, and laid down. I laid next to him, not having anywhere else to go.
We both just looked up at the ceiling.
“You sure about this?” He asked, out of nowhere.
I took a deep breath. “I don’t wanna be..but we aren’t gonna work Chris. So, I have to be.”
He exhaled sharply, before grabbing my hand. “Okay. I hope one day, you’ll be able to think differently Y/N.” He mumbled, before dozing off.
I wish I could say I did the same. But, my mind was racing. Did I just make a huge mistake? Nothing was ever gonna happen between me and Alex. But, I guess that isn’t the point.
I can’t be with Chris, if I’m into his best friend.
I still have no idea how I’m gonna talk to Alex though.
The next day, after I’d left Chris’s room, we hadn’t spoke.
I was getting ready before a show, and had just finished wrapping my wrist tape, when I walked out into the hall. I wasn’t paying attention, and ran into Alex. He blushed, and looked at the ground, for a second, before letting his eyes meet mine. He faked a smile.
“Oh hey Y/N! I um..wanted to apologize..” He said awkwardly. “I shouldn’t have gotten that drunk. It was stupid.” He said, as he started to sweat. I sighed.
“Alex, about last night-”
“I know, I know, I kissed you. But, it didn’t mean anything. I mean, I barely remember it. I have no idea why I even did it. I don’t see you like that at all.” He interrupted, chuckling slightly.
My heart sank, and I nodded. “Um..right. No, I know..” I faked a laugh, and held back tears. “I uh..I should go.” I added, before storming off.
I shouldn’t be this hurt over what he said, but I can’t help it. It stung.
After my match, I went back to my hotel room, I’d gotten one to myself, after what happened with me and Chris, it’d be weird to stay in his room again.
Chris and Alex had just finished their match, and were about to leave. Chris let out a sigh. “You feel like going out to eat or anything? I’m kinda hungry.”
Alex shook his head. “I’m good. But, maybe you should ask Y/N.” He suggested, causing Chris to frown.
“Oh..that’s right. You don’t know.” He mumbled. Alex furrowed his brows, and cocked his head, awaiting an explanation. Chris sighed, and rubbed the temples of his forehead. “Me and Y/N broke up..last night actually.”
Alex’s stomach tightened, and he swallowed the lump in his throat. “What?! W-Why?” He asked, trying not to sound like he knew anything, considering he felt like it was his fault. “Did something happen? Did she say anything?”
Chris took a deep breath. “She said she was falling for someone else..she said it just kinda happened. Whatever that means..” He replied, his voice weak.
Alex bit his lip. “Did she say who?” He asked, kinda hoping the answer would be him, even though he knew it wouldn’t matter.
Chris shook his head. “She wouldn’t tell me. But..she said she wasn’t gonna act on it..I don’t know if that’s what’s best though..” He sighed. “But, you should go see her. I know you guys are really close. That shouldn’t change because of what happened between me and her.” He added, shrugging slightly.
“I-I don’t know..maybe I should just hang out with you.” Alex argued, and Chris shook his head.
“No, I’ll be fine. Kinda gotta get used to being alone.” He chuckled slightly, before giving him my new room number. “At least stop by and see how she’s doing.” He sighed, before walking off.
I heard a knock on my door, which kinda took me by surprise. I was shocked to see Alex when I answered it.
I cleared my throat, and looked at the ground. “Um..Alex..what are you doing here?” I asked nervously.
“Why didn’t you tell me about you and Chris breaking up?” He asked, before coming in. “Please, tell me it didn’t have anything to do with me.”
I shrugged, at a loss for words. “It..doesn’t matter. It didn’t mean anything to you.” I breathed a laugh.
“Of course it meant something!” He exclaimed. “I-I just..didn’t think it’d mean anything to you. I definitely didn’t want to break you and Chris up.
“You said you didn’t think of me like that.” I sighed, shaking my head.
“Of course I said that. I shouldn’t have kissed you. Not because I didn’t want to. Of course I wanted to, I’ve wanted to for the longest time. But..Chris.” He explained.
I ran my hand through my hair. “I kissed you back.” I admitted.
He nodded. “I know that. I mean..I thought I imagined it. But, I guess I didn’t. So you’re into me?” I nodded in response. “But, you don’t wanna act on it..do you?” He asked, a hint of disappointment in his voice.
“I can’t Alex. You know what it’d do to him.” I explained, sounding just as disappointed as he did. If not more. He nodded slightly.
“Probably for the best..” He mumbled, I nodded in agreement, before looking him in the eyes. He stayed silent as he looked back at me. “Kinda upsetting that we um..never kissed sober..” He trailed off, as he looked at my lips. I nodded.
“Yeah..” I replied in a hushed tone.
He cupped my face. “I know we can’t be..together. But, maybe we could have this one night?” He suggested. I was surprised he offered. I wanted to, I just didn’t know if it was the best idea. “If y-you don’t think it’s a good idea I-I get-” He started, but I interrupted him by pressing my lips to his, ignoring my thoughts against this being a bad idea.
This kiss was better, less confusing than last time. I lifted his shirt over his head, pulling away for a second to do so, then I did the same to mine, before crashing my lips back into his, this time the kiss was more rough, and passionate.
It was weird that this didn’t feel weird. It should have been a bit strange right? It was Alex after all..
But, it felt right.
---- I woke up next to him, and laid my head on his chest, and smiled softly. “That was different..” I said, causing him to chuckle.
“Good different?”
I nodded. “Yeah. But..it has to be over now.” I frowned. He sighed, and nodded slightly.
“I know..I guess I should go.” He mumbled, before getting dressed, I did the same. He smiled softly as he was about to kiss me goodbye, but he stopped himself, remembering he wasn’t supposed to, he gave me an awkward side hug, and cleared his throat. “Umm..bye.” He mumbled, before leaving my hotel room.
---
“Alex? Did you stay with Y/N, all night..?” Chris asked, when he saw Alex leaving.
“Um..yes. She..really needed to talk.” He replied, trying not to sound guilty. Even if he felt like he was.
Chris’s face dropped, and he cleared his throat.
“You’re the other guy..aren’t you?

"Hey you," My face always lit up whenever Alex called or FaceTimed me. He was in the airport, not looking at the phone but still talking:
"Hey! Just wanted to let you know that I made it."
"Good," I smiled, sitting on the couch and asking, "Ready for your big night?"
"Won't lie, Y/N. This is gonna be rough for me."
A long time ago, I was actually a part of the Motor City Machine Guns. Unfortunately for me, I broke my neck and it put me out of wrestling for good.
Alex and Chris have been through so much, still keeping in touch with me, but it just wasn't the same. Now that they were facing each other, it wasn't the first time, but it still always hit the feelings and I knew this was going to be hard on both of them.
"I know," I sighed, then tried to brighten his mood, "But hey, you guys can move past this. You're like brothers and that doesn't have to change. Also, I got-"
I was going to deliver some huge news to Alex. He's been my best friend for ages, so I felt that he deserved to know first, but he really needed to vent about all of this and continued past me:
"I just don't get why Chris can't understand like, he's got to be world champion. I haven't and I deserve this."
He went on a little about work, how things seemed weird, certain rivalries going on, and while listening, it put this suspicious feeling in my gut.
"But anyway, enough about me," Alex let out, looking to the camera excitedly, "Sorry about cutting you off. What were you gonna say? You got some news?"
"Yeah," I tried to play off and smile, "My realty business is officially in the works and I'm about to make loads of money."
"Get that money girl," Alex laughed along with me, keeping some small talk going till his ride got there and he had to get off the phone.
Once Alex hung up, I sat and thought deeply about everything. That feeling in my gut, some things Chris has told me recently too. Something was going to happen after their match and it wasn't good.
There was one more night till their match and booking a flight for the morning and the night before, I spent packing, digging deep in my closet, and pulling out something I haven't worn in a long time.
My original Motor City Machine Guns jacket and the gloves to match.
At the show, I knew some people who helped me get in and I sat in the crowd pretending to be a fan. By the time Alex and Chris's match came around, my heart rate was through the rough.
Bouncing my leg the whole time, they kept me on the edge of my seat. Fighting all around the ring, exchanging blow after blow and just eating it, reversing out of submissions, hitting each other with their finishers, and kicking out right before three.
Truth be told, I had no clue who was going to win this, but in the end, Alex picked up the victory. I was happy for him because he truly deserved a title shot.
It was obvious though how hard that match was for him, Chris showing that emotion too and before either of them could even get up off of the mat, Deaner and Joe Doering came out and started jumping them.
I knew something like this was going to happen and the crowd became confused when I ran straight into the ring with my hoodie on, swinging a chair as hard as I could, going straight for headshots and when they all saw the Motor City Machine Guns wording on the back of my jacket. They all lost their minds.
My adrenaline was going so fast that I couldn't feel anything, I was moving so quickly and apparently swinging super hard because, after so many shots, Alex and Chris finally picked themselves up, and Deaner and Doering made a run for it.
"Ain't so tough now, huh big boys?!"
God I missed this feeling, still wanted to fight, but with my back turned, I heard behind me:
"Y/N?"
Turning my head to see Chris on his feet, holding his stomach and tears in his eyes. Alex was clinging to the ropes in complete disbelief, also scanning his thoughts and the look in his eyes explained to me that he realized that this is what I was going to tell him yesterday on the phone.
That I was back. That I was cleared to wrestle again after all this time.
Turning around with open arms, I made two finger guns at them, already fighting tears of my own when I smiled:
"I'm back, baby."
"Oh my god," Alex hurried to come over to me, hugging me tight and hiding his face in my shoulder and Chris came to do the same, wrapping my arms around them both as tightly as I could while we cried, the crowd going absolutely crazy for us.
It was such a struggle to stop myself from crying. Once upon a time, I truly thought that I would never wrestle again, that I would never share a ring with Chris and Alex again.
Being here with them, even if it wasn't a match, just to be with them in a wrestling ring, knowing we were back in full force. Hands down, happiest moment of my life.
"You guys don't know how much I missed this," I sniffled, trying to pull myself together, giggling at Chris's disbelief, holding my head:
"Your neck's good? You're really cleared?"
His eyes were a little red already and as I nodded, my attention turned to Alex and predicted:
"That's what you were going to tell me, wasn't it?"
"Yeah, it was," I wiped at my eyes, and to ease the tears, I made us all laugh, "But I'm glad I did it this way. You should've seen your faces."
"Leave us alone," Chris teased, ruffling my hair into a mess and Alex just hugged me again, swaying softly:
"I'm so glad you're back, Y/N. I love you."
"So much," Chris added in, smiling while hugging me one last time.
After the show, it was just like old times. We got to the hotel and I got the chance to show them all the doctor's clearances, that I planned on wrestling in Impact. We got lost in thinking of plans for the future.
It was so much fun and by the time all the lights went out and we planned on going to sleep, I had one of the two beds to myself and I was just staring at the ceiling.
The crowd's reaction to me rushing into the ring kept playing in my head, the way my blood was running, how I felt invincible. I'd never been happier in my life.
Wrestling was snatched away from me and it felt good to yank it back to me. It took a long time, but better late than never.
I couldn't stop smiling, my head turning as there was a shift in the bed Chris and Alex were sharing. Chris was snoring away, but Alex was on his side and smiling at me, still awake.
Scooting over in my bed, I fixed the blankets and patted the empty spot softly for him. Crawling out of their bed as smoothly as he could, he tipped toed over and slid right into mine, whispering:
"Can't sleep?"
"No, my heart's still pumping. I just feel like I'm living a dream," I whispered back.
"I believe it," He smiled, "I'm so proud of you. For not only getting yourself back into good shape but never giving up on getting back in the ring."
Touched by his words, I scooted closer and hugged him, getting teary again, "I missed all of this so much. The traveling, seeing arenas, being in that ring, and just cutting loose. Hell, even the fans that scream and hound me like when I had that wardrobe malfunction that one time."
"I'll never forget that," He giggled softly, rubbing my back as he held me in his arms, "Can't wait to make more memories. You plan on going for the women's title so we can be champs together.?"
"Of course, I'm going for that title," I smiled up at him, "I never lost it and you know that I'm going to kick ass like never before."
He just smiled at me and I could see in his eyes that he truly was proud of me, happy to have me here with him, having a rough night turned out to be the best one.
"When you broke your neck, thinking back on it, it made me realize something. It made me realize that you have to live in the now because you don't know how crazy things can change in an instant," Alex whispered, looking down for a moment, "I don't want to waste any more time or any more precious moments."
"What do you mean?" I tilted his head up to look him in the eyes, feeling how deeper he was breathing, spitting out:
"When I told you that I loved you earlier, you know how I meant it, right?"
"Alex-" Tears started running down my cheeks and when he wiped them away with his thumb, I knew what he meant and just how much he meant it, lips coming down to mine and whispering against them:
"I love you, Y/N."
I need a moment to feel his lips against mine and it felt so right. Alex was that one person who was there for me, even more so and closer than Chris.
Whenever I started kissing him back, there was this feeling that I never felt, growing stronger every time my heart beat, and I quickly realized that it was love. Alex was my love and I let him know:
"I love you too, Alex."
We had such a huge spark, Alex fixing the blankets to keep us covered and climbing on top of me, slipping his shirt off in the process, letting me feel all over and amazing by how he kept himself so built for all these years.
Our kiss grew hotter and steamier by the second, pushing his body against mine and making our hips connect, I broke our kiss to whisper:
"If you wanna go with this, we're gonna have to be quiet."
Looking over at Chris briefly, he was facing the other way and still snoring. He was asleep but I still wanted to be sure.
"Don't worry. He's a heavy sleeper," Alex whispered back, hands under the blankets and kicking his shorts and boxers off, "Like you said, we just have to be quiet."
"That's easier said than done," I was doing the same with my panties and bottoms, keeping my legs spread, my words very true when he looked down, positioning himself and running the tip of cock through my folds, sitting at my entrance:
"It'll be fine," He cooed softly, rubbing my sides softly while pushing his cock in slowly, taking the covers over him so he could lay against me and kiss, "Let's just enjoy making love."
Kissing back helped keep the noise to a minimum, his thrusts staying slow, but inched his cock deeper every time. The way his hips rolled into mine so sweetly and had a delicious burn.
Humming made up for not being able to moan like how I wanted to, but I began to whine softly at how hard that task was becoming, especially when he put his hands up my shirt and kneaded at my breasts, small kisses along my neck and getting lost in thoughts of his own, hips suddenly picking up speed.
"Alex," I gasped out faintly, playing with his hair to try and distract myself, "I don't know if I can keep quiet."
Glancing over to the other bed, he was seeing if Chris was still sleeping the same, meanwhile, I was about to go crazy from how much was built up inside of me.
"It's just so hard," I whined, hooking my arms under his and moaning into his chest, "I love it when you do it like that, Alex."
Knowing what I needed, exactly what I wanted and with how desperate I was becoming, he planted me firmly back on the bed, positioning his knees so the bed wouldn't make any noise, then rolling his hips fast like before.
"Don't worry, baby," Alex cooed softly, pressing into me as much as he could so I could have the contact, moans growing a bit louder but muffled by his chest, "I'm gonna get you there."
"Right there, Alex," I picked up my head to breathe, becoming undone with the consistent smacks at my sweet spot, feeling the squelching ooze of my orgasm, his cock hardly phased by it, hurrying to bite his shoulder and muffle the loudest moan yet, "Alex, I just came!"
Quickly darted his head over to Chris, still sound asleep thank goodness, because that one was rather loud compared to the still silence we had at first.
"I'm sorry about that," I left a kiss at the bite mark on his shoulder, falling back to the pillows and enjoying the last few thrusts he gave me.
"You're perfectly fine," He smiled at the bite mark, then came to hug me, "I really liked that."
"Kinky," I giggled softly, aroused in my mind when he winked:
"Next time we're alone you can find out and we won't have to worry about the noise part."
"That right?" I giggled more, "Gonna make me scream, huh?"
"You'll find out," He kissed my nose, laying on his side and keeping an arm around me to cuddle, "You and I have so much ahead of us."
"It's gonna be one hell of a time," I smiled at him sleepily, cuddling right back and holding his hand, "And we can do it all together finally."

Hard to Kill preview
Tumblr media
Jordynne Grace vs. Mickie James - On September 1, James announced her "last rodeo," where she vowed to retire if she lost even one match before winning the Impact Wrestling women's world title. In effect, Mickie has been putting her career on the line for over four months, and she's gone undefeated that entire time. Now she finally gets her championship match, so this is title versus career. If she wins, it'll be James's fifth Impact title reign, and her eleventh world title overall.
The stakes in this one make it worth the price of the whole show, so I'm glad they positioned it in the main event spot. Grace is 26 and ought to be at the top of the division, but it might benefit her to lose to a top veteran and chase her for a while. James is 43 and has a lot left in the tank, but nothing left to prove. Something has to give, but I don't know what it will be.
Josh Alexander vs. Bully Ray - Ray returned to Impact Wrestling on October 2 to win the annual Call Your Shot match, earning him the right to challenge any champion at any time. On November 18, Bully issued the challenge to Alexander for the Impact men's world title at this show. Ray then immediately turned heel, viciously attacking the champion and his wife.
This is billed as a "full metal mayhem" match, per the demands of Alexander after Ray attacked him again on December 22. Sometimes "full metal mayhem" is a souped-up ladder match (anything goes until a participant retrieves a prize suspended above the ring), and sometimes not (anything goes until a participant scores a pinfall). But the main idea is that tables, ladders, chairs, chains, and possibly other stuff will be placed at ringside to use as weapons. The stipulation plays to Ray's strengths as a pioneer of hardcore wrestling, and works against Alexander's emphasis on mat-based offense.
To put it mildly, I'm disappointed that Impact brought in Bully, let alone for a world title program. I got bored with his how-low-can-he-stoop heel work back in Ring of Honor. Pro wrestling has younger, better stars innovating on that formula while Ray, 51, is just recycling the same old shit. I'd be more interested in seeing Alexander wrestle Jeff Jarrett, and brother that's saying a lot. I sure hope Josh retains and Bully quickly disappears, but I don't have a lot of faith in Impact right now.
Jonathan Gresham vs. Eddie Edwards - This match was originally scheduled for April 23 last year, back when Gresham was the ROH men's world champion and Edwards was the leader of the anti-ROH faction Honor No More. The match was scrapped when Gresham was sidelined (possibly due to a concussion). Since then Gresham has fallen out with Tony Khan's version of ROH and finally ended up signing with Impact. In the meantime, Honor No More has disbanded, but Edwards is still a dick, so these two are back on a collision course. I think Gresham needs to win, but I can't rule out Edwards pulling shenanigans.
Chris Sabin & Alex Shelley vs. Matt Cardona & Brian Myers vs. Heath Miller & Rhino vs. Ace Austin & Chris Bey - The Motor City Machine Guns (Sabin and Shelley) are defending the Impact men's tag team title in a four-way, so the first man to score a fall on any opponent will win the match and the title for his team. Sabin and Shelley are also the STRONG tag team champions in New Japan, but that title isn't at stake.
As usual with four-way matches, I don't expect this to settle any feuds, and whoever wins will probably still be feuding with at least two of these teams right up until the next PPV in April. I guess Sabin and Shelley retain, since double champions seem to be a hot trend these days.
Trey Miguel vs. Black Taurus - This is for Miguel's Impact X division title. I am so relieved this is not a three-way or a four-way match. Keep up the good work, Impact.
I'm out of the loop but I heard Miguel turned heel and tagged the title belt with his graffiti. I'm not sure how Miguel really works as a hell, but I'll give it a try. Taurus has been with Impact for years and he's always just sort of...there. I expect some good big man/little man spots, but nothing to write home about. Miguel should retain.
Deonna Purrazzo vs. Killer Kelly vs. Masha Slamovich vs. Taylor Wilde - This a four-way to determine the next #1 contender for the women's title, so whoever scores the first fall will win the match and be slated to challenge the winner of Grace vs. James.
Assuming James wins the title, any of these four make sense as her first challenger. If Grace retains though, I think it's too soon to run back Grace-Purrazzo or Grace-Slamovich. Kelly would be my pick as a fresh face in the title picture.
The x-factor in this match is Wilde, a veteran from the 2000s who was retired for ten years, returned in 2021, and then took a year of personal leave. Now she's back with some kind of witchy/tarot reader gimmick, which I haven't seen much of yet. If they're serious about this new direction, she should get to shine a lot in this match; otherwise I don't have a lot of faith it'll work out.
Joe Hendry vs. Moose - Hendry is putting the Impact digital media title up for grabs. Last time I looked this title barely existed outside of PPV pre-shows and such, so I'm surprised Hendry made it on the main card and Moose has sunk this low. I guess if Moose won this belt he could elevate it. On the other hand, if Hendry retains I have to wonder if Moose is on his way to greener pastures...
Rich Swann vs. Steve Maclin - This is a falls count anywhere match, so the participants cannot be disqualified or counted out of the ring, and the deciding fall does not have to be scored inside the ring.
Ever since Maclin debuted with Impact his gimmick has been that he's a big mean guy who beat everybody up because he's pissed. For some reason this never translates into enough wins to put him in the title picture, so he just gets into feuds like this one where a babyface tries to shut him down. Maybe this time Maclin can just win the feud and start chasing Josh Alexander. On the other hand, if Bully Ray actually wins the title, Swann's the guy you'd want to push as the next challenger. So I could see this going either way, depending on the men's world title bout.
KUSHIDA vs. Mike Bailey vs. Yuya Uemura vs. Alan Angels vs. Bhupinder Gujjar vs. Mike Jackson - This is a six-way match scheduled for the pre-show. As usual, the first wrestler to score a fall wins.
Kushida is a top junior heavyweight in New Japan. Bailey is a key guy in Impact's X division. Uemura was a Young Lion in NJPW but he's on excursion here, so hopefully that goes better than it did for Okada. Angels was in AEW's goofy fun cult but now he's Cody Deaner's mean serious cult. Gujjar is stuck in the spot where a wrestling promotion puts a token Indian guy on TV and just expects everyone in India to turn into wrestling fans. "Action" Mike Jackson is 73 years old and regularly works in matches like this for GCW.
This isn't officially to determine a #1 contender for the X title, but you'd have to think the winner of this match would move to the front of the line. Since I don't expect Trey Miguel to drop the belt for a while, I'd have Uemura or Gujjar win to give them a little mini-push before putting over the champion.
Taya Valkyrie & Rosemary & Jessicka vs. Tasha Steelz & Savannah Evans & Gisele Shaw - Another pre-show match. The Death Dollz (Valkyrie, Rosemary, and Jessicka) collectively hold the Impact women's tag team title, but since this isn't a two-on-two match the title is not at stake. I assume the heel team is gunning for a title shot, but I'm not sure which of them will end up being the challengers. I guess Steelz's team should win to keep the story going.
