Okay so we're still on Chapter 15 of In his Father's footsteps, my TLK Aethelbert TLK fic! I'm getting there, about 2000 words in so I need to keep going lol! Here's Eadgyth stirring the pot again:

“I came to fetch my horse. I’m leaving.” Eadgyth sniffled, shuffling to the stall opposite him. Osbert’s frown deepened, and he detached from his mare. Dróttning trotted moodily, but Osbert was not deterred by her warning stamp. Instead, he walked over to the stall and watched Eadgyth groom her horse. It was a beautiful Halflinger, and Osbert was surprised that he hadn’t noticed the creature yet. Its elegant mane had been styled perfectly, the golden strands reminding him of Bebbanburg beach. The horse nuzzled against Eadgyth, gentle temperament calming her frayed nerves. Even though it couldn’t quite smile, the horse was radiating a joyful aura, and Osbert was shocked that someone else seemed to have such an intimate relationship with their loyal friend. Perhaps it was that connection that allowed him to reach out, to stop her from leaving in such haste.  “You’re leaving? Why?” Osbert asked, leaning against the stall.  “It’s clear that Aethelstan doesn’t want me here! I have brought him misery.” Eadgyth’s sadness evaporated, her previous solemn mood replaced by anger.  “I am sure that is not true. Did he tell you that?” Osbert felt the divot in his eyebrows continue to grow. Why would Aethelstan be so cruel to his own sister?  “No. But he dismissed me! He is acting cold with me. I do not know what I have done wrong.” Eadgyth stroked her horse, leaning against him. Osbert opened the wooden gate, joining her side as she eyed him curiously.  “Perhaps he is in shock to see you. It has been a long time, Eadgyth.” Osbert reminded her.  “I know. But…I thought he would be happy. I missed him dearly…” She looked up at Osbert, the pain and despair clear in her eyes. It was her sullen expression that struck Osbert’s heart, and he had a brief recollection of something Hild had once told him. He was hopeless when it came to sad people, like a hunter to a hog. Despite only knowing Eadgyth for about ten minutes, he wrapped his arms around her and gave her a friendly hug. Her tiny hands reciprocated immediately, and he smiled softly against her back.  “Give him time. I will speak to him, he is not an unreasonable man.” Osbert spoke against her cape, feeling her hands bunch in his shirt.  “You know him well then?” Eadgyth murmured back, sounding hopeful and curious.  “W-Well. Yes, I suppose.” Osbert almost choked, forgetting himself for a moment. Did he know the King well? Did it count if he knew what Aethelstan tasted like when he came? Or what glorious moans he made in the throes of passion? Osbert was alarmed for a moment, suddenly struck with a realisation.  Am I just a lover to the King? Does Aethelstan favour me for my body, but not my mind?

I also did a moodboard for my OC Turketyl, he is mentioned a few chapters prior! My little murder priest ehehehe. In case you ever wondered, this is what Turketyl looks like:

I finally got creative again thanks to a Creative Writing course at my university – and my boy Gregory finally returned to me 😂

A dark premonition settled in Ares' stomach as he watched the Captain. Absolon fought his way through the cult's followers, their blood leaving unrecognizable stains on their robes whenever the Captain's blade struck them. (Huh, maybe that’s why their robes were that particular shade of red, Ares thought to his own irritation.) The dull glow of the ritual circle shifted to violet, and the shadows seemed to gather over the drawn symbols.

"Ares, damn it! Move already, you ox!" Gregory ducked under a frenzied cultist and Ares instinctively introduced the man to the hilt of his sword, his movements more reflex than conscious decision.

"Captain!" he shouted again over the noise of the battle and an unsettling deep tone, like a deep, long-drawn bell. (Ares preferred not to think about too much for now.) (It came from the ritual circle. He was certain of that. The thing forming there was almost ready.) "We need to get out of here!"

(We had to kill a character. It killed me.)

Artist and Fic Writer EOY Asks: 5, 11, 25, 30!

5. A scene you enjoyed creating: In Springtime in Saltwic, the scene in Chapter 10 when they were sparring and everything went sideways (literally) lmao!

11. Fandom you'd like to create more for next year: Honestly I am pretty much sticking with The Last Kingdom as far as fics; I have no desire to write for anything else. As for fanart, I have a wild idea that I might draw some Lord of the Rings or Princess Mononoke fanart, so we shall see!

25: A scene or image that lives rent-free in your head: Oh my goodness there are so many!! LOL! But the one that sticks with me the most is the scene where Aethelflaed finds Aldhelm in her room at the end of 3.10. That scene literally flipped a switch in my head and turned me into a deranged lunatic. I had a lot of fun rewriting that scene and adding to it in the first chapter of Springtime.

30. Advice to yourself (and maybe others) for the new year: Just keep creating! Even if you think it is shit, even if you think no one will possibly want to read it. Even if you think the fandom is dying, please please PLEASE keep writing and drawing and making your moodboards and edits and gifs!

(A/N): Hello there lovelies,

I rarely do author’s notes anymore, because nobody reads them, but in case you are wondering, I am not going to be extra active on here.

After exams I usually end up feeling all the emotions I shoved back under anxiery so please excuse me if I am not answering anything, I just am not emotionally stable enough for it.

As soon as I am back I am taking care for everything.

WARNINGS: Fluffety Fluff

I never liked it, I lied.

When you came home, you immediately smelled the unpleasant smell of your least favorite dish.

Aldhelm’s favorite, unluckily for you.

He always tried his best to prepare it for you, after you had complimented on it once, wanting to desperately appease the man.

You had been constantly insecure for the first part of your relationship, having your own problematics, constantly worried of the competition with Aethelflaed, his dearest friend and long-time crush before he had met you, although she had actually been the one who had set you up.

Sadly, from then on you hadn’t been able to ever say the truth to Adlhelm and the man had kept on preparing it whenever he felt like it and whenever he thought of cheering you up, although it tasted like chalk in your mouth.

But you couldn’t deny that you appreciated the thought behind the dish.

But each time you hoped not to eat it again.

And yet, whenever you were faced with a plate of that, you always ate it up without tasting too much the flavor of it, although Aldhelm was extremely talented in the kitchen, having quite a passion for it and when his best friend, Aethelflaed, had opened a restaurant, asking him to be her partner in the economical part, he had actually spent more time in the kitchen than setting up deals.

And you loved him immensely for it.

And a few years of being happy together totally showed that.

Everybody around you two was just waiting for Aldhelm to pop up the big question, although you both took it slow, both having your own baggage and thoughts, taking one step at the time, as you kept each other involved in things also outside your relationship.

“Welcome back home” he greeted you, once you were out of your coat and you had dropped the bag in the first corner you could find, smiling brightly at your lover, as he attentively checked the oven and you tried to at least distract yourself from the unwanted meal with a few kisses, meanwhile Aldhelm giggled.

Gosh, you were both so giddy as of lately.

The restaurant he and Athelflaed took care of was slowly taking off and you had been very praised at work.

So, of course Aldhelm had to prepare his favorite meal.

But he had done something more, and he slightly pushed you back from entering fully the kitchen, as you sent him a confused look but eventually relented, more than happy to simply sit back and let your own personal chief do his thing.

The starters were wonderful and you tried your best to stuff your stomach before you went to the first meal, Aldhelm certainly keeping your glass filled with sweet wine and soft words and you celebrated your success and happiness.

No insecurity in view and a bit drunk, you were ready to face the ‘feared’ dish, when Aldhelm moved a bit away from you, just as you were diving in for another kiss, making you yelp in protest but he did ask you to wait.

‘I have a surprise for you’ and you hoped it would be a delicious dessert or an interesting new composition.

He asked you to close your eyes, even going as far as to cover them with his tie, as you muttered softly ‘kinky’ smirking at your idiot, who wasn’t able to stop himself from lowering his lips onto yours in a last kiss.

And you did expect food, since it had happened many times that your food geek had asked you to close your eyes to enjoy the taste and smell of food better, as they did in expensive restaurant.

But the smell didn’t seem to change and instead it intensified the horrid stench of your hated dish and you tried your best to calm yourself, till you felt Aldhelm again in front of you, reigning your face in a soft smile.

And slowly the makeshift blindfold was untied from behind your head, bringing you to face the light again as Aldhelm moved in front of you, lowering himself down on one knees and exiting a small box from behind his back.

A jewelry box.

And you couldn’t help but let out a rather ungraceful shriek.

“… what are you doing, Aldhelm?” you mumbled, as you tried to keep your voice calm, but unable to properly stop yourself from thinking that maybe it wasn’t the best thing that maybe… just maybe he didn’t mean to truly propose himself to you “… is it what I think?”.

And he opened the small casket to reveal a graceful ring, perfectly fitting your personality, something that made you scream loudly again at the marvelous surprise.

“… I know that we have said that we’d take our time, but…” he pursued his lips forward and hadn’t you known that he would have gotten just more nervous, you wanted to kiss them “… but I just can’t help but think that this is a perfect period for a wedding”.

“I have loved you since the first minute you accidentally waved me, since you thought I was your blind date in that restaurant…”.

Your date had actually stood you up and Aldhelm was supposed to meet Aetheflaed, there, but he hadn’t been able to stop himself from joining you and what had started as a simple coincidence had moved in a pleasurable knowledge, making Aldhelm ask you out, again.

‘For real’ this time.

“… and for all these years, you have showed me nothing but love and respect, something that I hope I was able to give to you too”.

“… you did it every day you woke up to me” you replied, and this time you didn’t stop yourself from kissing his lips, making him giggle and forget completely what he was trying to say, as he indulged you in a few more tender kisses.

“I love you” he commented, as he realized that you knew perfectly how much you meant to him “… marry me?”.

“Yes” and you jumped from the chair you had sit yourself onto him as you gently wrapped your arms around him, kissing him softly as you both pushed yourself away from each other, solely for him to slip the ring around your fingers.

And he then suggested he set up again the dinner, so that you could enjoy your meal.

And that’s when you finally realized it.

“… can I tell you a secret, my love?” you mumbled shyly, getting a worried look from Aldhelm, his eyes scanning you worriedly “… nothing dangerous, I swear”.

And then you pointed at the dreaded dish.

“I never liked it, I lied”.

Springtime in Saltwic

Total # of Chapters: 27

Total Wordcount: 113,781*

*Wordcount from AO3; In Word it is 115,033 words and I am not sure what the 1.2k discrepancy is.

So........ I did a thing and wrote an Aldflaed fanfic...

I started it about a year and a half ago, and only just now finished it. It is 25 chapters, 103k words. I uploaded the first chapter to AO3, and will upload a new chapter once a week until it is all uploaded. Warning in advance: it is a super slow burn. I apologize to your eyeballs in advance...

So for starters, this is the VERY FIRST fanfic I have ever written. I don't even read fanfic, let alone write it, so please keep that in mind when you read this. I am not a writer. The chapter titles are song titles because I could not think of good titles that were not spoilers. I have not read any in-universe TLK fanfic, so any similarities to other existing works is purely coincidental. Also, I wrote this for myself, and myself alone, so I am aware that it may not be everyone's cup of tea. I was originally not going to publish it, but since I put so much time and effort into it, I thought perhaps even if one other person gets something out of it then that is great.

Also, since this is my first time writing, I welcome constructive criticism. If there is a typo, or something does not make any sense and needs to be clarified, or if you think there is a better way for me to say something, please by all means leave a comment. But please do not come @ me if you just don't like it.

Second, this took me so long because it changed so much while I was writing it. It takes place starting with 3.10, and the majority of the fic takes place between Seasons 3&4, and then ends with basically a rewrite of Season 4. It has way more Uhtred in it than I originally intended, but don't worry it is NOT an Uhtred / Aethelflaed fic!

I am working on another one right now that is a Season 2-3 Aldflaed fic, although I don't know when that will be done. It will probably be as long as this one, so forever...

Chapter 1: Bring Me To Life

Tensions were running high after King Alfred’s passing, and Aethelflaed could feel the low rumbling of chaos start to spread in the minds of the men around her. A king’s passing was always a volatile time, especially for those who were self-serving and devious. Aethelwold was trying to sow discord among the ealdormen, Aethelred was looking to cut ties with Wessex and establish himself as King of Mercia, and Edward, young and inexperienced, was struggling to maintain order. Then there were other worries and sorrows. Her mother was distraught after the loss of her husband, Uhtred was imprisoned and was likely to be banished again or killed on the orders of her mother, and Thyra, Father Beocca’s beloved wife and Uhtred’s sister, was killed in a suspicious house fire.

Aethelflaed left the great hall to seek comfort and safety in her room. But it would seem even her own room was not safe; the door handle was covered in blood. Terrified, she entered the room cautiously, not knowing what she would find inside. On the floor at the foot of her bed, to her great surprise, was Aldhelm. He was gravely injured, bleeding out from a stab wound in his abdomen. She did not need to be told who had done it; she knew without asking.

TLK No-Canon November Prompt List

Hey everyone! I want to first thank everybody who has made TLKtober content using this prompt generator. You are all amazing and I am delighted and overwhelmed by the feedback and the amazing work you’ve all done! Thank you so much!

I am coming back at you with another prompt generator for the month of November, the ideas for which came with help from the lovely For Wessex discord server. The theme for this month will be, as the title suggests, all about Alternate Universes! The dice have changed a bit since last time, which I’m hopeful will offer some more variety in terms of combinations!

How it works: Use a die with the appropriate number of sides or a random number generator online to determine your 1. Character, 2. Universe they are set in, 3. Theme of the piece, and 4. Vibe or mood of the piece (Ex. The first chapter of my newest fic, "Darkest Before the Dawn", is published on AO3. Continue reading for a snippet of the first paragraph.

This is still in progress, but is a multichapter fic. It details the story of how Aldhelm fell in love with Aethelflaed, something that is completely missing from the series. It starts off taking place at the end of Season 2 during the Battle of Beomfleot, and continues into the time in between Seasons 2 and 3, and concludes with a Season 3 rewrite, focusing on Aldhelm's thoughts and feelings (with one minor scene change from canon).

Rated M for violence and blood.

This is technically a prequel to Springtime in Saltwic. However, you do not have to read that first to enjoy and understand this one.

I have no timeline for publishing, but will try my best to publish a new chapter every 2 weeks. I have 6 chapters finished now, and just need to edit them and post, while I continue to write future chapters.

The humid night air was cooling from the heat of the day, and a thin fog had started to rise from the damp earth. The pale waning moon hung high in the clear sky, casting its cool light over the fields where King Alfred and Lord Aethelred were leading the West Saxon and Mercian armies in haste to intercept Lord Odda and the Devonshire Fyrd. They had ridden hard through the entire day and night to the fortress of Beomfleot, where Odda and his men were certainly stationed, in the hope of preventing war. As the armies crested the hill near the outskirts of the fortress, the Devonshire fyrd came into full view in the valley below.
