there's something interesting to me about two artists i really like - MIKA and Gerard Way of MCR fame - both being raised catholic and realizing they're queer, but in adulthood making art that goes in completely different directions about it.
MIKA makes this bright, campy, bubblegum pop that utterly rejects a the premise of sinfulness placed upon him. his lyrics often rejoice in being gay - even before he was publicly out! (see: we are golden) - while still reflecting a struggle to find worth in the larger world. he only occasionally dips into anger at the church for how it treated him (see: promiseland) but you can see patterns of choosing the joy of being himself over the rejection of family and society and religion throughout his discography. His art says "you were wrong about me, i'm not a sinner, queerness is beautiful and God means nothing in the face of gay love" (see: origin of love).
and then MCR makes this violent, powerful, satanic-panic-inspiring, and sin-drenched music that pulls from the darkest, gothest parts of catholic lore to create stories of death and irredeemable foulness and guilt, while still ultimately rejecting the premise that because we are sinners, we are unworthy. gerard sings about bad things they've done dragging not just them, but everyone to hell (house of wolves, mama), they sneer openly at salvation in life (thank you for the venom), but ultimately, some of their most popular songs have a glimmer of defiant hope (famous last words). Their art says "you were right about me, i'm a dirty sinner, and isn't that kind of beautiful? don't i still ache and bleed and yearn? don't we all?"
#three cheers and the black parade both have that ex catholic shine to em.... now danger days. that's an album about fighting cops tho#no place in heaven is also ex catholic but instead of going goth it says YIKES! glad i'm not doing that anymore#mika#mcr#why did i spend an hour writing this

finally had time to listen to the new conan album and i CRIED when listening to found heaven bc i was thinking about nico
LITERALLY SAME i heard it and was like SHIT (i had been just *slightly* worried bc the singles were very much not conan’s usual style-not that i disliked them, they just weren’t what i envisioned for nico) but then THIS.
it’s actually still my favorite track on the album he SLAYED. i think it was a bit of a grower for me but ive been listening to it on repeat lately it’s so good😭😭
#wrongcaitlyn#talk ur talk asks#anyway still trying to find the right place for found heaven#it feels like such an opening track but i already have all the opening tracks for albums decided#sooo tough decisions

crazy how mika invented pop music with grace kelly (2006) and then again with happy ending and ring ring (2007) and then again with we are golden and blame it on the girls and by the time and pick up off the floor (2009) and AGAIN with origin of love and love you when im drunk and step with me (2012). and then. THEN FUCKING. REINVENTED POP MUSIC WITH THE ENTIRETY OF NO PLACE IN HEAVEN (DELUXE) (2015). and as if THAT wasnt enough then tiny love and sanremo and tomorrow and ready to call this love and blue (2019)
#this has been a quick rundown of my favourite mika songs#the boy who knew too much is a close second but no place in heaven remains my favourite album#i did cry in public the first time i heard ready to call this love though#i knew nothing about it not even the title and then jack savoretti started singing#and i was like OH ITS A DUET. ITS A LOVE SONG?!!!#anyway#i figured id post a little abt mika on here for once :)#mika#mikasounds

i fuckin' love mika (teh singer) (not myself)
#his music is. eveyrthin' 2 me i tired of pretendin' otherwise#the Gay undertones slowly progressin' into not so Under anymore thruout his discography. the buildup 2 wat was No Place In Heaven. i love#this album 2 bits#i mean one cud argue his queerness is very much scattered across his entire discography & i do agree but i feel like#in npih it's so concentrated. literaly typin' this as last party made me cry like a bitch#last party. no place in heaven (the song nawt the album). good guys. good wife. promiseland. an' if 'm hones? hurts.#like mikas songs r either romantic or gay gay. ofc as a gay man BOTH r queer as hell comin' from him but there's still smth Distinct in#songs where he bleeds his heart out abt the pains of growin' up & navigatin' the world as queer. idk.#i love mika so so much#mika caws#IK THIS LOOKS FUMNY CUZ WE SHARE A NAME OK

i know it’s not really set in stone who is the ‘last’ division in the lineup between bat and dh, but i think the answer is both because they’ll have/be serving the biggest purpose for the endgame 🤔
#this is vee speaking#this is an unbaked thought since i haven’t complied bat’s final/the end vibes and themes#but i like dh being last because drb➕ line up rei being last to ichiro’s first is Nice and that means jyushi’s chara number 14 lol#however bat’s last in plenty within canon too like their songs come last on the cross a line album for example#kuukou being the last to ichiro’s first like he is in united emceez makes me happy for the exact same reasons as it does for rei lol#and i’ve put more thought into bat being last per personal brainrot lmao#but the general thought?????? is that dh is the cause of the endgame and bat will the cause of the resolution of it all#with kuukou’s name stemming from the buddhist concept of ‘the void between the end and the beginning’#jyushi with themes of ‘bringing people together’#and hitoya having heaven and hell as his name or places of an end lol#so i think it’s purposeful that nagosaka switch positions all the time lol why else would kr stuck true to the og line up#but not stick true to the 2nd gen’s lineup lol

Having a 4 month gap between a lead single and an album is one of the stupidest moves an artist can do. It is never smart to drag a roll out like this. I'm surprised Niall haven't learned a thing from his 2nd era. He released NTMY in October of 2019 and his album came out in March of 2020. That's 5 months in between. It doesn't matter he announced the album just 5 weeks before the album came out or not. The overall era was lengthy and never ending. In between he also released multiple singles and did so much promo and his own social media livestreams. By the time the album came out everyone was fed up with him.
This era is going down that same rabbit hole. He has so many festivals lined up, The Voice, different radio and tv promo and on top of that he himself is self promoting him on TikTok and IG. And for an artist who doesn't have a nice personality *he always comes off as arrogant and narcissistic* it is not a good move to expose his nasty side to the fans and the gp. That is what happened during his 2nd era. Everyone saw his beggar man side and his narcissistic side cause the roll out for the era was a drag.
So God help his fans if this single doesn't do well on the charts. If not he will be relentless for the next 17 weeks yelling at them to get his songs "up the charts" like in 2019.
Well, the haranguing will probably start soon, because Heaven has been out for eight hours here and it's only at #24 on the UK iTunes. Nice to Meet Ya went to #1 for the first day or so. Heaven is #54 on US iTunes.
#the show#heaven won’t be the same#I actually don't think it matters much how long the gap between announcement & album is or what he does to promo it#the interest is just not there in the first place#engagement numbers way down

got the jp import of make it big (the vinyl record!!!) for $19 on sunday.........i think thats something worthy to brag about .
#the place i got it from was book-off and everything in there was pretty expensive and i only got like . 3 things but thats a highlight .#i think i'm just gonna go there on special occasions . i do not think pre-owned sailor moon figures should cost $50#went to a record store that i usually frequent and managed to get music from the edge of heaven (it was the vinyl . they had the cd too .)#and i swear they suddenly upped their prices even though the store is supposed to be known for their cheap prices#idk after going to both of those places i should just look the music in local thrift stores a lot more . like i already do but#i'm gonna do it even more now....like years ago i got abba's 'arrival' album at a savers and it was like....$4. compare that to#my local record store selling abba records for around $20 .
