ah so, i forgot i like to make a post showing my most listened to albums of the year! im actually not sure i even made one for 2022? anyway.
i think its neat to see how my listening habits vary from year to year. so here's my top 10 listened albums/eps from 2023! according to my last fm stats.
i got really into hardcore music this past year, but mostly the newer big bands atm. i'll have to explore some classic hardcore this year!
1. Merauder - Master Killer one of those bands/albums i had been aware of for awhile but never really checked out until now. great bridge between metal and hardcore favorite track: Master Killer 2. Twitching Tongues - Gaining Purpose Through Passionate Hatred speaking of bridging metal and hardcore! this feels more hardcore-influenced metal to me as opposed to metal-influenced hardcore. good stuff either way. favorite track: Gaining Purpose 3. Abominable Iron Sloth - Abominable Iron Sloth really angry sounding sludge.. rarely have i heard anything full of such rage. i absolutely love this album. favorite track: I Am The Carcass 4. Fleshwater - We're Not Here to Be Loved incredible album bringing back some 90s grunge sounds with modern metal and shoegaze influences. favorite track: The Razor's Apple 5. Mongrel - Off The Leash (EP) been awhile since a 3 song demo excited me! incredible death metal leaning hardcore. cant wait to see what these guys do next. favorite track: Dog Complex 6. Judiciary - Flesh + Blood different yet similar approach from the band on this new album. less crossover thrash, more metallic hardcore, in a good way! favorite track: Engulfed 7. Fuming Mouth - The Grand Descent one of my favorites from 2019 that i revisted this past year. THIS is what we should be calling deathcore, not whatever its thought of as today. death metal and hardcore perfectly mixed. some slight doom and sludge tendencies thrown in for good measure too. favorite track: Burning Hand 8. Twitching Tongues - In Love There Is No Law thought of as their best by many and i see why! it's a journey from start to finish. it perfectly displays the band's range in under 40 minutes. favorite track: Preacher Man 9. Harms Way - Common Suffering kind of different from what i'd normally like but it's cool! very Sepultura and industrial influenced. some Neurosis coming out too? it's all over in a good way. love when bands try to step out of their comfort zone a bit and nail it. favorite track: Wanderer 10. Bleed - Somebody's Closer (EP) reminds me so much of what i would listen to in my early double digits. Chevelle, 10 Years, Crossfade, Evans Blue, etc... in a bit of a similar vein to Fleshwater where they're bringing back some of the best of 90s/early 2000s rock. favorite track: Burnt (By the Sun)
normally i like to tag people too, but since its already April, i won't be doing that lol

quotes from a blog recap of the young veins' album release party on 8 june 2010
The Young Veins had their album release party yesterday, June 8th, at Origami records in LA, a record label but also a tiny, tiny store that only sells vinyls. The place is a narrow corridor with an upstairs level that can be reached by a spiral staircase. The band performed upstairs and people had the feeling to be in a pit hole, breaking their necks to look at their heroes. I guess only 30 people could have fit there, and these people were 90% teenage girls.
Ryan, Jon as well as the other members Andy Soukal (guitar, bass), Nick White (keyboards, he played keyboards for Bright Eyes) and Nick Murray (drums) are all extremely young, and with their juvenile looks you would never guess they would venture in the 60’s, the childhood-teenage years of their parents.
The sound is definitely embedded in the past, and does not have anything to do with the rock music of 2010, as they sure don’t use any electronic equipment but instead vintage instruments like the Wurlizter piano.
“Take a vacation” is pure Beatles mania intertwined with Kinks riffs, a few Beach Boys harmonies, and probably a few other things from famous 60’s bands I have forgotten,… the Byrds? I know Phil Spector is serving jail time right now, but the title track could have been one of his productions. The songs ‘Take a vacation’, ‘Cape Town’, and ‘Maybe I Will, Maybe I Won’t’ could be some lost songs of an unidentified 60’s band that would have digested its complete sonic environment. It is pretty hard to distinguish what they have exactly borrowed from the Beatles or the Kinks from what they have really composed since the songs are still inventive beside their obvious inspirations.
It is a recipe for ear delight and even if the concoction seems a little prefabricated, there is no reason to abstain from this pleasurable 60’s gluttony. More British invasion than psychedelic rock, the songs are quite short (the whole album is less than half hour) but made of catchy and upbeat tunes.
Last night, Ryan Ross, Jon Walker and Andy Soukal played guitar, alternating for the vocals, and Jon sang alone on ‘Everyone But You’, whereas Ryan did most of the vocals on ‘Take a vacation’, ‘Cape Town’, ‘Maybe I Will, Maybe I Won’t’, and The Other Girl’. ‘Young Veins (Die Tonight)’ had this particular Kinks feeling, a feeling even more present when Ryan used a tambourine on ‘Change’.
If music touches at our genuine collective memory, it sure is a winner. It’s effortless, you are on familiar soundscape and you recognize it immediately as part of your inner world. Now I wonder about radio airplay for the Young Veins? On oldies stations?

Churned out a quick second one for you tonight! Didn't expect to finish it, but here it is!
@urchindog @throne-of-crows @imatotallynormalteengirlok
#he was in fact not “right”#i love using this song because in context of the album it is also more tragedy than love song#because the next is come down soon#and a few tracks later is all falls down#so lizzy wasn't right either#if you're ever crying about byler and someone asks why you're crying just show them this#i feel like it's like an emotionally invested recap#but in like 'look who was wrong about being happy' awful way#my edits#byler edit#bad timing trope#never not thinking about what mike thought his life would be like when he started coming to terms with his feelings for will before el came#back

I must say that lately I've been too addicted to animal crossing to really have time to do anything else but one good piece of news is that I finally made some real progress on my book documenting my experience of seeing TMBG show recap post because I finished describing the pre-show stuff and the first set yesterday so I might finish it this week. I hope. The only problem is that it's already 9 pages long so in a way I'm not joking about how I could turn this into a book instead. And it's not my fault that the stage banter was so good that I'm probably going to end up transcribing like half of it at least.
#goosepost#you know there's another thing that's been kind of making me laugh recently#because back in 2020-2021 my animal crossing era was really really something to behold and something that absolutely ruled my daily life#and i remembered having all these notes on my phone where i wrote down so much stuff concerning both of the games i played then#and the levels of detail and how thoroughly it's all documented is just a shock to me now it's so funny#because ok i wrote down so much about the villagers i had. like when they moved in and out etc#i also had this whole collection of quote unquote headcanons about them all. because the cool thing about these games#is that the villagers are kind of a blank slate. so based on your interactions with them it's easy to come up with more ideas#about their personalities and personal lore and relationships etc. so i wrote down all of those that i had and it's a formidable list#but i also had these massive lists of the total number of villagers. how much of each personality type i had. each species#like i didn't remember most of this. lists of all the campsite visitors i had??? with dates?? and every possible checklist for limited item#that you could get and such but well that one is at least useful if you try to 100% the game ig#i guess what i'm saying here is just that being normal and casual about things i like is just not something i could ever achieve#i should say that for example at the end of 2022 i made a list of all the tmbg songs i had on my spotify top 100 songs list#and compared how many were from which album and ALSO how many were sung by jl and jf (they were represented about equally. btw)#and in the next 2 years i of course once again did similar analyses but this time of the whole list of all 100 songs. yeah.#all in all well what can i say i have a bit of a knack for making all sorts of lists and documenting events and all that#also. making all those animal crossing lists. least allistic thing to do in hindsight to be honest.#ok when i finish that show recap it will be an event that's all i can say for now.#i hope it'll be at least half as enjoyable to read as it is to write and also not quite as much of an effort and time commitment

I was wary of doing a post in this manner...the "stats" /wrap up of 2024. But I started digging, and realized Cato had some growth on all fronts.
1. The #Spotify one is cool, I see alot of artist posting those numbers, mine are small, but, I am grateful that people are checking out my album [SACRIFICES, 2020]. Since then, the only "official" release Domo and I have put out was a slowed down version of "Gravity" (playing currently).
2. The CatoStlouis #YouTube Channel [Cato & P-Mo] had some growth too! What's crazy is how the views would go up on this channel, but I NEVER shared those videos! Literally, the YT algorithm was serving the videos up to users lol.
3. #BLAMESOCIETY YouTube channel is my favorite growth moment. I actively posted links to this channel/videos, and the screenshots of views/hours watched/subscribers made my gratitude overflow. I set out to grow a channel and it's happening.
4. The goal for the next year is....more; more live shows, more numbers, more merch, and more recipients of the newsletter.

Since YouTube thinks I don’t listen to enough music to get a recap, I decided to speedrun a bunch of albums this month and made this tier list.

I am going to personally fight tik-tok, man-to-man. Fist-to-fist. Because it robs me of joy every day. Every time I try to tell my beautiful husband about somehting interesting, he is already tired of it or doesn't want to hear it because he is bombarded from the tik-tok before I can reach him with it. >w<
#I did not do years of ''Haha omg no way!!!'' on posts that I had seen years ago on tumblr to be treated this way >:(#Today I tried to tell him about my youtube recap because I think it's very funny#my top 5 albums are all the same guy my number 3 listened to artist is from listening to the same song on repeat for a week#so is number 4#Anyway he didn't want to hear about it. He has been hearing about spotifies wrappers A Bunch I Guess. MINES IS THE SPECIAL ONE. >:(
