ah so, i forgot i like to make a post showing my most listened to albums of the year! im actually not sure i even made one for 2022? anyway.
i think its neat to see how my listening habits vary from year to year. so here's my top 10 listened albums/eps from 2023! according to my last fm stats.
i got really into hardcore music this past year, but mostly the newer big bands atm. i'll have to explore some classic hardcore this year!
1. Merauder - Master Killer one of those bands/albums i had been aware of for awhile but never really checked out until now. great bridge between metal and hardcore favorite track: Master Killer 2. Twitching Tongues - Gaining Purpose Through Passionate Hatred speaking of bridging metal and hardcore! this feels more hardcore-influenced metal to me as opposed to metal-influenced hardcore. good stuff either way. favorite track: Gaining Purpose 3. Abominable Iron Sloth - Abominable Iron Sloth really angry sounding sludge.. rarely have i heard anything full of such rage. i absolutely love this album. favorite track: I Am The Carcass 4. Fleshwater - We're Not Here to Be Loved incredible album bringing back some 90s grunge sounds with modern metal and shoegaze influences. favorite track: The Razor's Apple 5. Mongrel - Off The Leash (EP) been awhile since a 3 song demo excited me! incredible death metal leaning hardcore. cant wait to see what these guys do next. favorite track: Dog Complex 6. Judiciary - Flesh + Blood different yet similar approach from the band on this new album. less crossover thrash, more metallic hardcore, in a good way! favorite track: Engulfed 7. Fuming Mouth - The Grand Descent one of my favorites from 2019 that i revisted this past year. THIS is what we should be calling deathcore, not whatever its thought of as today. death metal and hardcore perfectly mixed. some slight doom and sludge tendencies thrown in for good measure too. favorite track: Burning Hand 8. Twitching Tongues - In Love There Is No Law thought of as their best by many and i see why! it's a journey from start to finish. it perfectly displays the band's range in under 40 minutes. favorite track: Preacher Man 9. Harms Way - Common Suffering kind of different from what i'd normally like but it's cool! very Sepultura and industrial influenced. some Neurosis coming out too? it's all over in a good way. love when bands try to step out of their comfort zone a bit and nail it. favorite track: Wanderer 10. Bleed - Somebody's Closer (EP) reminds me so much of what i would listen to in my early double digits. Chevelle, 10 Years, Crossfade, Evans Blue, etc... in a bit of a similar vein to Fleshwater where they're bringing back some of the best of 90s/early 2000s rock. favorite track: Burnt (By the Sun)
normally i like to tag people too, but since its already April, i won't be doing that lol

quotes from a blog recap of the young veins' album release party on 8 june 2010
The Young Veins had their album release party yesterday, June 8th, at Origami records in LA, a record label but also a tiny, tiny store that only sells vinyls. The place is a narrow corridor with an upstairs level that can be reached by a spiral staircase. The band performed upstairs and people had the feeling to be in a pit hole, breaking their necks to look at their heroes. I guess only 30 people could have fit there, and these people were 90% teenage girls.
Ryan, Jon as well as the other members Andy Soukal (guitar, bass), Nick White (keyboards, he played keyboards for Bright Eyes) and Nick Murray (drums) are all extremely young, and with their juvenile looks you would never guess they would venture in the 60’s, the childhood-teenage years of their parents.
The sound is definitely embedded in the past, and does not have anything to do with the rock music of 2010, as they sure don’t use any electronic equipment but instead vintage instruments like the Wurlizter piano.
“Take a vacation” is pure Beatles mania intertwined with Kinks riffs, a few Beach Boys harmonies, and probably a few other things from famous 60’s bands I have forgotten,… the Byrds? I know Phil Spector is serving jail time right now, but the title track could have been one of his productions. The songs ‘Take a vacation’, ‘Cape Town’, and ‘Maybe I Will, Maybe I Won’t’ could be some lost songs of an unidentified 60’s band that would have digested its complete sonic environment. It is pretty hard to distinguish what they have exactly borrowed from the Beatles or the Kinks from what they have really composed since the songs are still inventive beside their obvious inspirations.
It is a recipe for ear delight and even if the concoction seems a little prefabricated, there is no reason to abstain from this pleasurable 60’s gluttony. More British invasion than psychedelic rock, the songs are quite short (the whole album is less than half hour) but made of catchy and upbeat tunes.
Last night, Ryan Ross, Jon Walker and Andy Soukal played guitar, alternating for the vocals, and Jon sang alone on ‘Everyone But You’, whereas Ryan did most of the vocals on ‘Take a vacation’, ‘Cape Town’, ‘Maybe I Will, Maybe I Won’t’, and The Other Girl’. ‘Young Veins (Die Tonight)’ had this particular Kinks feeling, a feeling even more present when Ryan used a tambourine on ‘Change’.
If music touches at our genuine collective memory, it sure is a winner. It’s effortless, you are on familiar soundscape and you recognize it immediately as part of your inner world. Now I wonder about radio airplay for the Young Veins? On oldies stations?

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lady Parts are BACK and I am beyond delighted!
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
🥰 The Red House Mystery (AA Milne, author; Simon Hester, narrator) - a really entertaining golden age detective story. Genuinely sad he only ever wrote the one.
😊 Someone who cares (Just_my_latest_hyperfixation) - cute, entertaining single dad Steve/nanny Eddie fic
😐 Strange Medicine: Dr. Maxwell Thornton Murder Mysteries (S.C. Wynne, author; Matt Haynes, narrator) - p much a standard but entertaining cozy in thoroughly fictional small town. Until the surprise fatphobia in the epilogue! And the epilogue was literally just setting up the next murder so it was TOTALLY SKIPPABLE! I wish I'd known bc I would have just stopped and not had my mostly pleasant experience tainted. I do have to say that the narration was really stellar on this, doing a great job with the buttoned-up, tense voice for Maxwell and the relaxed drawl for Royce
💖💖 +102K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
What’s Your Order? (JJK) - 9-1-1: Buck/Tommy, 18K - "5 Times Buck Guessed Tommy’s Coffee Order + 1 Time He Didn’t Have To"
eight ways to say i love you (middyblue (daisyblaine)) - 9-1-1: Buck/Tommy, 8K - "Homemade tomato sauce; a team barbecue; a drunk dial; getting ready to meet the parents; a basketball sub; sex; oranges; a stolen sweatshirt. Whatever he’s feeling, he doesn’t need to put a name to it right now. He can keep an eye on Evan’s tomato sauce and enjoy dinner with him and cradle this warmth in his chest until they’re ready to say it out loud."

Just got my YouTube Music recap from this summer. Top artist was the Front Bottoms, which brings me joy.
Top albums were the Twenty One Pilots EP, You Are Who You Hang Out With (Front Bottoms), Kings (I Am Empire) and the Anatomy of Tongue in Cheek (Relient K). So theres some recs for anyone looking for some.
Most listened to song?
King For A Day. By Pierce the Veil.
You do NOT wanna know how many times I listened to it. An ungodly amount. Be afraid.

i think if the lost hollow gang met the people from storybrooke they'd get along swimingly. i mean they both have the trauma of being stuck in a make believe town outside of their own realm living twisted ironic versions of their own lives. i think they'd all fit right in
