“Jesus, Hold My Hand” performed by Alison Krauss & Union Station __________________________ Jesus, Hold My Hand Songwriter: Albert Brumley
As I travel through this pilgrim land There is a friend who walks with me Leads me safely through the sinking sand It is the Christ at Calvary
This would be my prayer, Lord, each day You help me do the best I can For I need Thy light to guide me day and night Blessed Jesus, hold my hand
Jesus, hold my hand For I need Thee every hour Through this pilgrim land Protect me by Thy power
Hear my feeble plea O Lord, look down on me When I kneel in prayer I hope to meet You there Blessed Jesus, hold my hand
Let me travel in the light divine That I may see the blessed way Keep me that I may be wholly Thine And sing Redemption's Song some day
I will be a soldier brave and true And ever firmly take a stand As I onward go and daily meet the foe Blessed Jesus, hold my hand
Jesus, hold my hand 'Cause I need Thee every hour Through this pilgrim land Protect me by Thy power
Hear my feeble plea And O Lord look down on me When I kneel in prayer I hope to meet You there Blessed Jesus, hold my hand
When I kneel in prayer I hope to meet You there Blessed Jesus, hold my hand

WEDNESDAY'S WEEKLY POETRY PROMPTS: 8/7/24 ~ FLYING TO GLORY
FLYING TO GLORY © 2024 - G. Smith (BMI) =================== In a small country church, In the foothills of north Georgia, The congregation gathers, To worship, sing, and pray.
The preacher gives a message, With, “Amen” and “Glory, glory!” And they all go out on the chorus of, “I’ll Fly Away.”
“I’ll fly away, oh glory, “I’ll fly away, in the morning. “When I die, Hallelujah, by and by, “I’ll fly away; I’ll fly away.”
They meet there every Sabbath, And on week-long tent revivals, No matter if the sun is shining, Or the if the skies are gray.
Young and old they walk the aisles, Being baptized in the river, And all go out rejoicing, singing, “The Unclouded Day.”
“O, the land of cloudless day, “O, the land of an uncloudy day. “O, the tell me of a home where no storm-clouds rise, “O, they tell me of an uncloudy day.”
When the times get tough as they often do, With worry, pain, and sorrow, And burdens grow too heavy, For their earthly power,
Their fellowship, a family, Leans in to lift the load, Knowing about the promise, “In the Bulb There is a Flower.”
“In the bulb there is a flower, “In the seed, an apple tree, “In cocoons, a hidden promise: “Butterflies will soon be free! “In the cold and snow of winter “There's a spring that waits to be, “Unrevealed until its season, “Something God alone can see.”
And when at last, This life has passed, And we retire from the fray, We rest assured, If faith endured, That we’ll fly away. We rest assured, Our faith endured, And that we’ll fly away.
“I’ll fly away, oh glory, “I’ll fly away, in the morning. “When I die, Hallelujah, by and by, “I’ll fly away; I’ll fly away.”

I'll Fly Way sung by Beckah Shae
Original Songwriter: Albert E. Brumley (1932)
▼ Lyrics :
Some bright mornin' when this life is over
I'll fly away
To that home on God's celestial shore
I'll fly away
I'll fly away, oh, glory
I'll fly away
When I die, Hallelujah, by and by
I'll fly away
When the shadows of this life have gone
I'll fly away
Like a bird from these prison walls
I'll fly away
I'll fly away, oh, glory
I'll fly away
When I die, Hallelujah, by and by
I'll fly away
Just a few more weary days and then
I'll fly away
To a land where joys will never end
I'll fly away
I'll fly away, oh, glory
I'll fly away
When I die, Hallelujah, by and by
I'll fly away
I'll fly away, oh, glory
I'll fly away
When I die, Hallelujah, by and by
I'll fly away
I'll fly away, oh, glory
I'll fly away
Some bright morning when this life is over
I'll fly away

Down In The Groove
Tumblr media
Released: 30 May 1988
Rating: 4/10
The saying ‘too many cooks spoil the broth’ certainly applies here, as this is Bob’s most collaborative album and also one of his least enjoyable. Couple this with songs being recorded over a four year period, you are left with a disjointed mess and a Bob who sounds wildly different from track to track. It’s likely that Bob was focusing his energy elsewhere during ‘88, as he was creating hits with The Traveling Wilburys, and this album seems to be a compilation of the worst outtakes and lazy covers from the previous few years. Whilst a few tracks are fine, this is another bad record that further helped to mythologise the Dylan of decades prior.
1. Let’s Stick Together - This Wilbert Harrison cover is terrible. Bob sounds awful, the instrumentation is almost unlistenable, and the production is pathetic.
2. When Did You Leave Heaven - See above, another cover, another complete failure.
3. Sally Sue Brown - I actually don’t mind this interpretation of Arthur Alexander’s song. The vocalisations are pretty funny, Bob’s singing is fine, however the constant backing singer is annoying as fuck.
4. Death Is Not The End - This track, written by Bob, is a somber affair. His voice isn’t his best singing effort, and the music isn’t up to much, but the songs message is at least interesting.
5. Had A Dream About You, Baby - A very average folky rock song that is instantly gone from your memory.
6. Ugliest Girl In The World - Shit. Just boring, badly written shit. What’s happened here Bob? Why’ve you stopped trying?
7. Silvio - Written with Robert Hunter of The Grateful Dead, this is the album highlight. It’s fun, catchy, and a great song to sing along too. Bob sounds fantastic, I love the acoustic guitar, and it’s no surprise this is the only song from this album that has survived in his live sets.
8. Ninety Miles An Hour (Down A Dead End Street) - An okay song with nice piano, even if the lyrics mean nothing and Bob sounds strained.
9. Shenandoah - I genuinely really like this version of an old folk standard. As usual, I could’ve done without the backing vocals, but Bob sounds like he’s gone back to his folk roots and the music is perfect for this rendition.
10. Rank Strangers To Me - The final track is Bob’s version of an Albert E. Brumley tune. It’s as average as the rest of the album, with Bob howling the long notes, though the stripped back guitar and bass do sound nice.
Verdict: Once again I find myself slating my idol, but this is the 3rd bad album in a row, luckily the Wilburys album of the same year is fantastic. It just all seems so hollow, so careless and almost released begrudgingly, as if he just needs to put out anything no matter the quality. Following this, Bob set out on the Never Ending Tour, which is still ongoing to this day (only halting for the pandemic). However, his critical redemption was still a year away, as a wiser, older, and more gravelly Bob steps out of the shadows, and proves he still has what it takes to release genius music and intricately beautiful songs.

Soon we'll come to the end of life's journey And perhaps we'll never meet anymore 'Til we gather in heaven's bright city Far away on that beautiful shore If we never meet again this side of heaven As we struggle through this world and its strife There's another meeting place somewhere in heaven By the side of the river of life Where the charming roses bloom forever And where separation comes no more If we never meet again this side of heaven I will meet you on that beautiful shore Oh they say we shall meet by the river Where no storm clouds ever darken the sky And they say we'll be happy in heaven In that wonderful suite by and by If we never meet again this side of heaven As we struggle through this world and its strife There's another meeting place somewhere in heaven By the side of the river of life Where the charming roses bloom forever And where separation comes no more If we never meet again this side of heaven I will meet you on that beautiful shore

Willie Nelson and Family with Billy Strings and Larkin Poe performing the Carter Family tune "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" and "I'll Fly Away". _____________________________ Will The Circle Be Unbroken Song reworked by A. P. Carter from the hymn “Will the Circle Be Unbroken?” be Ada R. Habershon and Charles H. Gabriel.
I was standing by my window, On one cold and cloudy day When I saw that hearse come rolling For to carry my mother away
Will the circle be unbroken By and by, Lord, by and by There’s a better home a-waiting In the sky, Lord, in the sky
I said to that undertaker Undertaker please drive slow For this lady you are carrying Lord, I hate to see here go
Will the circle be unbroken By and by, Lord, by and by There’s a better home a-waiting In the sky, Lord, in the sky
Oh, I followed close behind her Tried to hold up and be brave But I could not hide my sorrow When they laid her in the grave
Will the circle be unbroken By and by, Lord, by and by There’s a better home a-waiting In the sky, Lord, in the sky
I went back home, my home was lonesome Missed my mother, she was gone All of my brothers, sisters crying What a home so sad and lone
Will the circle be unbroken By and by, Lord, by and by There’s a better home a-waiting In the sky, Lord, in the sky
We sang the songs of childhood Hymns of faith that made us strong Ones that Mother Maybelle taught us Hear the angels sing along
Will the circle be unbroken By and by, Lord, by and by There’s a better home a-waiting In the sky, Lord, in the sky
Will the circle be unbroken By and by, Lord, by and by There’s a better home a-waiting In the sky, Lord, in the sky

I'll Fly Away was written in 1929 by Albert E. Brumley and first published in 1932. It is believed to be the most recorded Gospel song of all time and is frequently performed at Baptist, Pentecostal, Nazarene, Church of Christ, and Methodist funeral services. It is also a standard part of the bluegrass music repertoire.
Its lyrics are rooted in 19th century slave and prison songs.
This Hank Williams Sr. cover version of I'll Fly Away was recorded in 1949.

Review: Willie Nelson’s Return To Austin City Limits
Countless legendary artists have graced the stage at KLRU-TV’s Austin City Limits studio for tapings since the live music television program launched more than four decades ago, but whenever it’s Willie Nelson – the show’s inaugural performer for the October 17, 1974 pilot episode – the energy in the room feels something akin to a royal reception.
When the 85-year-old outlaw country figurehead returned Monday night, November 19, for his first taping in nearly 15 years alongside the Family band (which since 1973 has featured sister Bobbie Nelson on piano, Mickey Raphael on harmonica and Paul English on drums), that reverential tone was exponentially amplified to a level of ultra-historic importance.
Tumblr media

Certainly, there was potential for a star-studded parade of guests. Perhaps cameos from his sons Lukas and Micah? Or any of the myriad legendary-in-their-own-right collaborators he’s played with over the years? But no one else showed, and though that would logically mean the spotlight was reserved for Nelson, the selections he included among his 23-song setlist – picked totally off-the-cuff with no pre-printed paper in sight – functioned more so to showcase the century’s worth of songwriters and recording artists that paved the way and helped him along the path to the present moment.
Within that context, it was telling that his voice sounded strongest and riffs resonated sharpest when dusting off tunes written by others that have become his standards (among those: Bart Howard’s ’54 crooner “Fly Me to the Moon,” Django Reinhardt’s ’40 gypsy jazz standard “Nuages” and Billy Joe Shaver’s ’73 essential “I Been to Georgia on a Fast Train”), though shout-outs to past co-songwriters (“Good Hearted Woman,” “for Waylon!” and “It’s All Going to Pot,” “for Merle!”) were equally affecting.
Tumblr media

Regardless of origin, Nelson has veritably laid claim to every song in his repertoire over the years by consistently inserting his own inimitable low-end drawl and unmistakable, slightly off-kilter riffs (generated by his trusty acoustic, Trigger). His enigmatic hold on them was further evidenced this evening by his ability to elicit unerringly faithful crowd-chorus callbacks on cuts like Lefty Frizzell’s “If You’ve Got the Money I’ve Got the Time” and Ed Bruce’s “Mamas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys.”
Make no mistake: the energy was just as palpable for all-Willie-penned mainstays like “Night Life” (which saw him undertaking such an intense, bluesy shred that he had to shake out his left hand afterward), already timeless outlaw anthem “Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die” and “On the Road Again” (the most raucous sing-along of the set).

During now-standard show closer “I’ll Fly Away” (Albert E. Brumley’s ’32 hymn re-recorded with Merle Haggard in 2004), Nelson removed his signature rolled-up, red bandana (which he’d earlier swapped for his black cowboy hat to hearty cheers) and tossed it to a front-row audience member. Then, in an unprecedented move just before finishing the song, he threw out a handful of all the replacement bandanas stashed atop his amp. Calling for one more “big finish,” he offered a final thank-you and wave of his hat before walking off stage, pausing on his path toward the backstage door to warmly embrace ACL executive producer Terry Lickona, then shake the hand of each crew member along the way – a most humble king till the end.
