Week Six: Artist Research
‘Fruits of Our Youth” by Alana Questell, 2013
• Contemporary Artist: Alana Questell, female, lives in Tennessee currently, uses visual art, design and storytelling in her practices • Makes a lot of collages, as well as zines, playlist covers and event curation posters • Uses a lot of aesthetics in her work, most collages have flowers, animals and people in them. Very pretty to look at, range from simple to chaotic pieces. • The piece I’m talking about is called “Fruits of Our Youth”, has the contrast between the natural and the man-made earth, covered in flowers and mushrooms that lie in front of a building with people looking down onto the plants • Very pretty, vintage images, cluttering in the bottom right corner, nice sense of space and dimension made with the background appearing so far away and the plants being in the foreground, bit of a proportion trip, plants appear larger than the obviously would in ‘real life’ • This collage was done for her personal use, I couldn’t find a meaning, but you can look at it in the same way as my own collage with the industrial and organic concept. Except this work would show the opposite, where the natural world is almost reclaiming its home by overgrowing and overtaking the building behind • Unlike my work, Questell has stuck to one media where I used three, took images from magazines and I took my own photos, I also used natural elements and she didn’t, her piece is more congested and mine is a little more spread out • Most of her works don’t seem like she has much of an emphasis on meaning or ideas behind her collages, she just seems to enjoy making art • This was like me when I started the Half A Dozen pieces, it had no meaning/purpose to begin with but as it started to develop further, I specified its meaning

SALES - ‘big sis’
Tumblr media
SALES are back, almost a year after the release of their Debut EP. ‘big sis’, remains in the familiar world the Florida duo has been pulling out their songs from: warm, breathy and melancholic.
You can download the track on Bandcamp.

SALES INTERVIEW : JUST IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS
Nothing brings me more holiday cheer than watching SALES perform their tracks in front of the world biggest Christmas tree. Surround by supporters and Christmas tide the show was warm and intimate.
Just before their set at the Mandarin Hide I was able to sit down and talk with Lauren Morgan and Jordan Shih of SALES. We talked about the SALES EP, being an Internet clicker and we even get a SALES…

SALES - Vow
SALES are Lauren Morgan and Jordan Shih. The duo has been recording together on and off for years, making music that relies on improvisation, sampling, a lil' bit of chopping & screwing, and of course, friendship.
They have recently released a brand new single, 'vow', which is due to appear on their forthcoming debut album. The track is a lovely little indie pop number, all languid guitars and Morgan's sweet vocals. As with the band's previous singles, 'vow' comes complete with some very nice collage-style artwork courtesy of Alana Questell.
You can buy the single right now via the band's Bandcamp page. I highly suggest you check out their other tracks too.
SALES are also embarking on a tour of the East Coast. Check the nifty poster below for dates, venues and some pretty excellent companions (including acts such as Small Wonder, Alex G, Told Slant and Hundred Waters).
