This week Cadvan has been learning about #rearfoottargeting as a #cooperativecare technique. He learnt to lift his front legs when cued when through daily repetition relating to putting harnesses/ jumpers/ coats on and off, so I've taken those same cues and applied them to shaping his back legs.

Usually I'm a great believer at going at the speed of the side the animal finds the hardest. But having done a bunch of #canineconditioning with Cadvan now I've learnt that actually, sometimes starting off with his easy side achieves faster results. Although he's less one-sided when moving now, he's still pretty one-sided with balance. So making progress with the side he finds easier let's him figure out weight shifts with more confidence, and he can then apply the knowledge of what he's meant to be doing to the wobbly side.

1st video, therefore, is his left back foot; the easy side. His first (and only other) session with this was on Monday. Now I'm at the stage where I'm fading the spoken cue that I use for harnesses etc. so that the behaviour is more of a blank slate for other things.

2nd video is me starting him off with his right back leg; the wobbly side. He's much less sure about this, and is concentrating much harder - evidenced by the lack of wagging tail.

The behaviour is very useful at the minute for checking his feet after muddy walks (given some of the common early symptoms of #alabamarot). Eventually my aim is to get him to use a rear #scratchboard. Buttttt I want to think an in-the-middle behaviour I can do with him to get his confidence and wag levels back up. For ease-of-other-stuff reasons it can't involve him backing up. Anyone got any ideas?

After loosing my gorgeous Shadow, my Dalmatian on 01.02.18 to ALABAMA ROT I didn't know how to move on. To move forward. To stay sane. 2018 for sure has been an interesting awesome but also sad year for me loosing my gorgeous Dalmatian Shadow to alabama #alabamarot.
