i hc'd that kalim doesnt really get scared by ghosts and urban legends and to add onto that: i think kalim would be icked out by people with an interest in true crime.

like, the content hits uncomfortably close to his own encounters and some people frankly take a bit too much pleasure in going through all the gory details - wait, you're telling him there are people who fall asleep while listening to true crime podcasts?! on that note, some psychological thrillers (especially the 'adapted from true events' kind, compared to the 'dystopic social commentary' ones) would also fit into this category - just being plain uncomfortable to sit through, a movie/podcast/tv experience making him sick to his stomach.

i just think that kalim doesn't get the appeal at all, no matter the explanation. if someone tried to show him a few cases, he'd just be sitting in uncomfy silence.

(on the flipside, i think jamil hates horror movies with an abundance of jumpscares compared to slashers. he has an uncanny sense foretelling when they're gonna happen, but he still flinches during the actual jumpscare. bonus points if a fakeout is good, u get to see his soul jump out of his body twice.

on the topic of true crime, jamil just doesn't vibe with it, especially when it's not well-researched and/or poorly handled in its delivery. and like, he's already gotten the fearmongering-type of warnings* from the adults in his life plenty of times. he doesn't want to see it packaged in a spooky, edgy, internet detective-way, but he's more rational? understanding? of its appeal to others.)

Very much enjoying The Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi so far - first hugo nomination in a while that I wouldn't have read otherwise but am incredibly glad I am.

But I am unfortunately obliged to like the cartoonishly evil italian warlock-pirate whose response to seeing the Crusades first-hand was 'man I should kill god about this, I'd almost HAVE to do a better job' more than the story might want me to.

People trying to white wash G!le questionable morals by saying he's an oppressed and a liberating rebel boy uwu are missing the sauce idgaf.

Mockingjay clearly shows that by the end of the book, it doesn't matter who fighting on the right side, if both are willing to to do the absolute worst and use human lives as tools to win the war, people will die, innocents will die and they will not die easy or clean deaths.

Like shouldn't it click that his mindset is wrong when he suggests the cave in the Nut and the most of the adults in the room are very uncomfortable with that and try to reason with him?

The implication of what Gale is suggesting settle quietly around the room. You can see the reaction playing out on people's faces. The expression range from pleasure to distress, from sorry to satisfaction. - Mockingjay Chapter 15 -

Like what he's suggesting has even Beetee, his future bomb collaborator, trying to humanize the miners of District 2 to him. Katniss even tries to reason that a cave in would be no different to how their own fathers died. And you want to know what he says about that?

"But not so quick as the one that killed our fathers," he retorts. "Is that everyone's problem? That our enemies might have a few hours to reflect on the fact that they're dying, instead of just being blown to bits?" - Mockingjay Chapter 15 -

He's been radicalize. He lacks empathy completely here. His fighting for a good cause, correct, but the way he goes about taking lives, seeing them as a just cause, is dangerous and disgusting, and is deserved of all the criticism he gets. It's what leads him to develop the bomb that is aimed to kill first responders. It was aimed to kill people like Prim. He may not have set those bombs off personally, but he designed that death trap and it did exactly what he wanted it to do. He is as culpable for it as Beetee and Coin are.

Another large theme of the book is staying true to oneself and ones' moral even in the face of immorality. And that's also calling out the worngdoings of your allies to the best of your abilities. To give mercy to those who are in unwinnable situation and direct your attention to the real perpetrators/offender and seek true justice.

G!ale can be a sympathetic character, because he is, but that doesn't absolve him from his actions in the books. Don't let his sympathetic backstory blind you to the fact that he's been wanting to commit atrocities in the books.

Ministry for the Future has this odd conceit of, like, a Bond-villain level faceless and untouchable terrorist group that simultaneously has the infrastructure and capacity to (for an example) permanently cripple the global airline industry. But like, as the good guys.

And honestly the part that stretches my suspension of disbelief past breaking is less that they'd pull off some spectacular attacks and more that they'd stay mysterious and faceless afterwards while the resources of basically every major state intelligence agency in the world are set to rolling them up.
