Mionetta defossa Zelenkov, 2023 (new species)
Tumblr media
(Forelimb bones of Mionetta defossa, from Zelenkov, 2023)
Meaning of name: defossa = buried [in Latin]
Age: Miocene (Aquitanian)
Where found: Saint-Gérand-le-Puy, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France and the Aral Formation, Aktobe and Kyzylorda, Kazakhstan
How much is known: Multiple forelimb bones. It is unknown whether any of these bones belonged to the same individuals.
Notes: M. defossa was a small duck, about the size of the extant garganey (Spatula querquedula). Two other species of Mionetta had previously been recognized, the Oligocene–Miocene M. blanchardi and the Miocene M. consobrina, both of which have been found in France (including Saint-Gérand-le-Puy), Czechia, and Germany, and were larger than M. defossa. A partial arm bone from the Miocene of Namibia has also been assigned to this genus.
The name "defossa" has been found written on 19th-Century museum labels for duck fossils from Saint-Gérand-le-Puy, and thus may have been intended to be used for one of the duck species at this locality. However, it was never formally coined as a scientific name for any of them until now.
Reference: Zelenkov, N.V. 2023. Small ducks (Aves: Anatidae) from the early–middle Miocene of Eurasia. 3. A revision of Mionetta natator (Milne-Edwards, 1867). Paleontological Journal 57: 659–670. doi: 10.1134/S0031030123060114
