Monologue

The months passed by.  Winter in the forest was prettier than I could have imagined. Every time I went out, I always found something new to admire.  Spring was beautiful, with all the flowers blooming and wildlife emerging.  Leaving everything and starting over was hard at first, but I had come to love it here.  I was able to talk to my friends all the time and Meguri and I had become very close. We considered each other family at this point.  The guests who stayed at the inn were all nice, so I enjoyed my job as well.  And now summer has almost come… I had been waiting for this practically since I had moved here. 

-Sayo is talking to her friends on her cellphone

Sayo: Have you guys decided when you’re coming to visit yet?

Kisa: Duh! Of course we have!

Rena: Fufu…We’ve been talking about it for weeks. 

Lei: Tetsuo is going to take us the first Monday of summer break. So in two weeks!

Sayo: That’s awesome! I’m excited to see you guys. We’re going to have so much fun. I’ve found things for us to do in the town nearby as well. 

Kisa: Hell yeah! 

Emi: There’s some new recipes for sweets I want to try! We should all bake together!

Lei: Fufu…It will be a crowded kitchen, but I’m sure we can make that work. 

Sayo: The kitchen should be big enough for all of us…

Kisa: Think there will be fish in that river? I wonder if I could catch one with my hands…

Rena: Haha…! I’ll bet you would fall in trying!

Kisa: I would not!

Sayo: Fufu…There are fish but I don’t recommend trying to fish with your hands Kisa. 

Lei: Fufu…This is going to be a lively summer. 

Emi: It will be so much fun!

Rena: Oh…! Gotta get going, guys. My mom needs me. Let’s talk later?

Kisa: Sounds good!

Sayo: Talk to you guys later, then. 

Rena: Alright, see ya!

-The girls say their goodbyes before hanging up

(I’ve got some free time…Maybe I should tidy up my room a little…)

-Sayo begins cleaning her room. When she reaches her dresser, her eyes land on a small wooden chest with a flower design carved into it

(I haven’t looked at this in a long time…Meguri gave it to me when I said I wanted to find something to keep a few personal items safe…She said it was something a guest left behind and she didn’t need it.)

-She opens the chest, revealing the purikura photos she had taken with Kou, along with the ring he gave her

(The purikura photos I took with my friends are displayed on my wall…and I wear the necklace Rena gave me…But I decided I couldn’t display his photos or wear the ring anymore, not even on the necklace. Not if I want to move on from that part of my life…so I put them all in here. I haven’t looked inside in a long time…)

-She sits down on her bed with the chest in her hands, reminiscing on the times she spent with Kou, his brothers, and the Sakamaki brothers

(Yeah, there were a lot of bad times…but there were good moments…And I do miss them from time to time…)

-She reaches to the very bottom of the chest. Underneath everything is a small piece of paper with Kou’s number and the number for the Sakamaki house phone written on it

(I remember…I wrote these both down shortly after I came here…I was having a really hard night and I questioned if this was really a good idea or not…so I decided to write down their numbers before I forgot them in case I ever needed them in the future.)

Sayo: I am kinda curious how they’re all doing…

(I can’t call Kou…If I call him and he gives me some kind of plausible explanation for what happened back then, I might question my resolve…But maybe…)

-She stands up, grabbing the piece of paper and putting it in her pocket

(I can’t call them from my phone or the Inn’s phone. But there is a payphone on the street outside the Inn.)

-She goes outside to the payphone and uses it to call the Sakamaki mansion. It rings a few times before someone picks up

Reiji: Hello. This is the Sakamaki residence. Reiji speaking. 

(It’s Reiji…! I expected it to be one of the house servants…If it was, I was just going to hang up…I know I called, but now I don’t know if I’m actually prepared to talk to him or not…)

Reiji: Hello? Speak now or I am hanging up the phone.

Sayo: Fufu…You’re acting like usual, so guess you seem to be doing alright after all. 

Reiji: Sayo…! Do not hang up the phone!

Sayo: You knew it was me so quickly?

Reiji: I know your voice, Sayori. If you thought you could call without us realizing it was you, you are sorely mistaken. 

Sayo: I didn’t. I didn’t really have much of a plan, to be honest. I found this number as I was going through my things and was wondering how everyone was doing. I was going to hang up if it was a servant. I didn’t really expect one of you to answer. 

Reiji: You saved our household number…?

Sayo: I did…I hope you guys are doing well. I do admit that I miss you and Subaru sometimes. Ayato, and even Laito at times too…

Reiji: Where are you? I will come and bring you home right away. 

Sayo: Reiji, this is my home now. I’m sorry for running away. I had the opportunity to go, and after everything with Kou, I just couldn’t live my life like that anymore…

Reiji: And what about your promise to become my bride so that I can take over as the successor?!

Sayo: You know I never promised you that, Reiji…I had been planning on leaving the whole time…I always said I didn’t plan on marrying any of you. There were good times, Reiji. Those would be the reason I came back, not marriage. But I can’t live my life like that anymore. So I’m staying where I am.

Reiji: Sayo…What do we have to do so that you will return? 

Sayo: …I’m sorry, Reiji…There isn’t anything. 

Laito: Sayo-chan…? Is that really you?

Sayo: Laito…?!

Laito: I was passing by and forced Reiji to give me the phone when I heard your name…! Do you have any idea what you’ve put us through? How long we searched for you? But we couldn’t find anything…

Sayo: Of course not…I didn’t want to be found. 

Laito: Why…?! Why would you leave us?! 

Sayo: I wanted my life back. I wasn’t going to let it be controlled by vampires.

Laito: …Just come home, Sayo-chan. Can’t we move past that?

Sayo: It’s not something we can move past, Laito. I’m not coming back. I don’t want to. I’m sorry. You guys never got a proper goodbye. I know it’s late…but goodbye. I really do wish you all well. 

Laito: Sayo-chan, don’t go…!

Reiji: Don’t you dare hang up, Sayori!

-Sayo hangs up the phone. She takes a step back, staring up at the sky for a moment

Sayo: I’m sorry…but I’ve moved on…

-When she is back in her room, she puts the paper with the phone numbers on it back in the chest. She then takes the chest and places it in her closet. After opening her window, she rests her arms on the windowsill, leaning out the window slightly

Sayo: Summer is coming…It’s going to be so much fun.

-All thoughts of the vampires that were previously a part of her life were gone as she brainstormed ideas of fun things for her and her friends to do while they were visiting

Let’s go into some more detail about each death and estimation calculations.

Deaths are listed chronologically by manga appearance. “S” means it was self-inflicted with intention. They have to be the ones to cause the fatal blow (aside from one exception, being Izumi throwing herself in front of a car). Assisted suicide, like Tanaka stabbing Satou as a demonstration, does not count as self-inflicted.

+5,880 for deaths while in captivity. Some were already included, but it pales in comparison to the total count. Tanaka was probably subject to experiments everyday. Let’s assume 3 deaths per hour (accounting for setup time and various death methods), 8 hours in a working day, and 245 working days in a year (Japanese work duration from Google). Which means in 10 years that’s 5,880 deaths. This is a very VERY general approximation, not taking into account probable overtime, lengthier experiments resulting in slower deaths, or extremely fast causes of death like getting shot. Regardless, with 10 years of captivity, Tanaka’s death toll is certainly the highest.

I don't think he would ask Tanaka to help given him being freshly released from lab experiments. Nekozawa calls him “a valued client”, it’s implied he’s done this before. Satou needed guns to save Tanaka, but aside from that we don’t know how many times he’s done this. Let’s just add another 30 deaths on top of the 10.

+540 for deaths from repeat killings by SAT. I imagine the SAT encounter until Satou’s recovery was quite fast and lasted at most 5 minutes. Killing Satou at a rate of 2 shots per second means 600 deaths in 5 minutes. Let’s subtract 60 (half a minute of deaths) to account for moments when SAT was distracted by Takahashi’s sniping.

+15 for deaths from fighting with SAT offscreen. Satou is a power house. He takes out at least 5 people for every death of his own. Slapping on an estimated extra 15 deaths from this fight since he was still tuckered out by the end.

+3 for deaths from fighting gang members (chapter 47). Though unarmed against a group of 100+ men, Satou would probably make quick work of these guys since they seem mostly untrained. Slapping on an estimated extra 3 deaths.

+50 for deaths from fighting Iruma Air Base soldiers (chapter 55-57). I’ve had enough of this dude. Let’s just add 50 more for his fight against the army base soldiers since they are highly trained, killing him without restraint, and there are a lot of them. Satou is also visibly weary by the end of it.

But let's be generous and say Kei either lucked out with calmer waters or manages to stay afloat for longer. So he drowns at a rate of 1 death per hour. Let’s also say Kei was confused and his estimation of being adrift for a week was off (downing consecutively will do that to a man), and he was only in the water for 3 days. I also don’t think he would be floating around for a week, especially if he didn’t make it out of Tokyo Bay.

To account for extra training, rest time, and Kou generally not feeling up for dying on repeat, we’ll assume out of the two weeks, Kou only used 10 days. Where am I getting these numbers? My gut tells me so (source: trust me bro).

Short drop hanging takes 10-20 minutes for complete brain death. Let's take the middle road and say 15 minutes. So on average, 4 deaths per hour. 4 x 5 x 10 = 200 deaths.

Sayo's Route: Brute Ending

Sayo's Route Masterlist

Part One

A month passed by slowly for everyone.  Some continued their desperate search. Others waited and planned for their trip, holding in their excitement and longing for summer. And one did her best to fend off her loneliness and heartache, as she wondered if this truly was the best decision to make. 

-Meguri is in the kitchen at the inn, on the phone with Lei

Meguri: Leiko…Sayo is having a hard time. If you and your friends can make time to come see her, I think that might really help. 

Lei: She is? She told us she’s been doing great…

Meguri: She’s been trying to hide it, but I’ve heard her crying in her room on multiple occasions…

Lei: Really…? Okay, I’ll talk to the girls and we’ll see when we can come. 

Meguri: Thank you, Lei. She’s such a sweet girl…I can’t stand the thought of her suffering like this in silence…

Lei: Yeah…Don’t worry, I’ll figure something out. 

Meguri: Thank you. I’ll talk to you soon. 

Lei: Bye, Auntie. 

-Meguri sets down the phone with a small sigh 

Meguri: I hope Lei and her friends can help somehow…

-Meanwhile, Lei is at home staring at her phone after hanging up her call with Meguri

Lei: Why didn’t you say anything, Sayo…?

-She pulls up her groupchat with Kisa, Emi, and Rena, sending a text asking for them to all meet at her house. After messaging back and forth, they all agree to meet in two hours

*Timeskip*

-Lei, Kisa, Emi, and Rena are gathered in Lei’s living room 

Kisa: So what’s up? Why did you want to meet? 

Lei: Meguri called me earlier. She said she’s heard Sayo crying in her room a couple of times, so she must be having a hard time but trying to hide it. She asked if we could find a time to visit soon. 

Emi: Oh no…I’ve been so worried that she wouldn’t tell us if she’s been struggling…Even though I’ve told her talking to us about how she’s doing wouldn’t be a burden…

Kisa: Damn…She always seems so cheery when we’re on the phone…I never would have guessed. 

Lei: If you guys can spare a weekend soon, I think it would be a good idea to surprise her. 

Rena: I don’t disagree…but shouldn’t we try to do something about the root of the problem? 

Emi: What do you mean…?

Rena: Kou. She won’t say it, but he broke her heart. My guess is, he’s the reason she gets sad. She didn’t get closure. She left without talking to him about anything after overhearing that conversation between him and his brothers. That’s all she has. That’s no way to end a relationship, whether it was good or bad. Plus before that, things were obviously really good between them. 

Lei: So what are you saying…?

Rena: We find Kou and get him to talk to her. That way he can give her his side of the story and she can get closure on their relationship. Then she can decide whether she wants to move on or not. 

Kisa: Yeah…! Let’s do it! 

Emi: I’m not so sure about that…Sayo won’t want us to talk to him…

Lei: You’re probably right about that…but it’s not an awful idea. 

Rena: So? Who is on board? 

Kisa: I am! 

Emi: I don’t think we should…

-Lei shrugs 

Lei: I’ll go along with whatever you guys decide

Rena: Majority rules, then. We’re going to her old school and finding Kou. Shouldn’t be too hard since he’s a celebrity. 

Kisa: Hell yeah! 

Lei: It’s a night school, so should we go tomorrow after school?

Rena: That works for me.

Kisa: Emi, are you staying out of it?

Emi: I don’t want to be left behind…

Kisa: Looks like we’re all going then!

-That night at the inn, Sayo is in her room alone. She is sitting on the floor, looking through the purikura photos she took with Kou back when they first became friends. She had hung up the ones she had taken with her friends on a new display board on her wall earlier that day, but at the time she knew she couldn’t decide what to do with Kou’s. She begins muttering absentmindedly to herself

Sayo: I should just throw them away…If I want to move on, I can’t keep looking back at these, let alone put them on my wall…

-Her eyes wander to the trash can in the corner of the room. But the idea of actually throwing them away brings tears to her eyes. She lets the photos fall from her hands as they move up to cover her mouth to stifle her sobs

Sayo: I can’t do it…I can’t throw them away…! 

(I know this was the right decision…and I’m very grateful for everything Meguri has done for me…but a part of me wishes I had never overheard Kou and his brothers talking about Eve…! If I hadn’t, I probably would be living with them right now. We would still be happy…Sure, I would be living in ignorance, but that seems better than this…!)

Sayo: I miss him…I miss him so much…

-The next day, Lei and the girls travel to Sayo’s old school to find Kou. They decide it will be best to wait at the front entrance for him to leave after school ends rather than try to look around the school and possibly miss him. A lot of the students have gone home by the time Kisa spots Kou 

Kisa: Hey! You’re Mukami Kou, right?

Emi: Kisa…Are we really doing this…?

Kisa: It’s fine, Emi. We have to. We don’t want her to be sad forever.

-Emi turns to the two girls following them

Emi: Guys…?

Rena: Hey, this was my idea.

-Lei shrugs

Lei: I’m neutral on this. 

-Meanwhile, Kou and his brothers were watching the exchange in confusion. It didn’t seem like they were fans of Kou, seeking his attention for that purpose

Kou: Um…Excuse me? Did you guys need something?

Kisa: Yes! Take this!

-Kisa pulls out a piece of paper, forcefully holding it out for him. It has a phone number written on it

Rena: You broke her heart, even if she won’t admit to it. She might not want to talk to you, but call her. Try to fix things.

-Kou takes the paper, too stunned to say anything

Rena: Let’s go. 

-She walks back the way they came, the three girls following after her

Kou: W-Wait!

-Emi glances back, a nervous look on her face, but nobody answers him. Kou turns to his brothers

Kou: It has to be Sayo…right?

Ruki: I don’t see who else it could be.

Yuma: Don’t mess this up, Kou. You have to convince her to come back!

Kou: Right!

-Meanwhile, someone has chased after Lei and the girls

Laito: Excuse me! With how you were just speaking with Kou-kun…you must be Sayo-chan’s friends, right?

Emi: You know Sayo…?

-The rest of the girls are on their guard. They know the men she lived with also go to this school, after all

Laito: Of course~ We were friends. I was so worried when she disappeared…Is she alright? Is there a way I can talk to her…? There’s so much I want to say…I never got to say goodbye, you know…?

-The girls exchange glances, hesitant to give out the number of the inn to anyone else. They know Sayo won’t answer an unknown number on her cellphone

Lei: Well…I guess it won’t hurt…Just don’t go giving this number to anyone else, alright?

Laito: Of course not. I just want to make sure she’s doing okay.

-Lei takes out her notebook and writes down the inn’s phone number before tearing out the page and handing it to him

Lei: It’s late, so we should get going. 

Laito: Of course. Thank you~

-Laito and the girls walk away in separate directions. After a moment, Laito stops, staring at the phone number with a smirk

Laito: Nfu~ Sayo-chan’s friends, huh…? So unsuspecting…

-He pulls out his phone, dialing the number. It rings a few times before someone answers

Sayo: Crystal Waters Inn. Sayori speaking. How may I help you?

-He resists the urge to chuckle as he hangs up the phone

Laito: Nfu~ Guess I have to find out where Crystal Waters Inn is…

Part Two

TW blood, death

-Sayo is outside near the back of the inn, taking the trash out to the dumpster

Sayo: Phew…Today’s been unusually long…

(We’ve had more guests than usual today, so there’s been more work. After this, I should be done for the day, though…)

-As she is walking back to the inn, she hears rustling nearby

Sayo: Hm…?

(Some sort of animal, maybe…? Although it’s getting colder by the day. I haven’t seen many recently. I wouldn’t be surprised if we get snow soon…)

-She decides to ignore it, and keeps walking. But as she nears the inn, she hears footsteps directly behind her

Sayo: …!

-As she tries to turn around, she is hit on the head from behind. As her consciousness fades, she feels someone catch her as she falls

*Timeskip*

Sayo: Ngh…

(God…My head hurts like hell…What happened…? Did someone…attack me?)

-Her eyes shoot open. She is lying on a couch in a large living room. Her eyes widen in recognition of where she is

(Oh shit…! How the hell did they find me?!)

-She quickly sits up and glances around to find all of the Sakamaki brothers gathered in the living room

Subaru: It’s about time…

Ayato: No kidding. You’ve been asleep for hours.

Sayo: You guys…How did you find me?!

Reiji: …Is that all you have to say to us after all this time?

Sayo: What do you expect me to say? Hi, how’s it going? 

Laito: Nfu~ Relax, Reiji. Of course she’s confused. I did steal her away without a word, after all. 

Sayo: So it was you…?

Laito: That’s right~ I was the one who found you. With the help of your friends, that is.

Sayo: What…?

Laito: They came to our school to find Kou-kun, you see. They told him that he broke your poor little heart and pleaded with him to call you. I told them I was one of your friends and got the phone number as well. That was how I found the little inn you were staying at. Really, Sayo-chan…I had no idea you were so pathetic. Have you really been so broken up over Kou-kun after all this time despite running away from him that you needed your friends to beg him to call you? 

-Sayo stands to face him while glaring 

Sayo: No. I had no idea they were doing anything like that. I would never tell them to come here. And this is why. I was supposed to have cut all ties with the life I had here so I could disappear. That’s ruined if Kou is able to contact me…and obviously you as well. 

Laito: It’s not that easy to disappear, Sayo-chan.

Sayo: It obviously would have worked if they wouldn’t have come here. 

Subaru: You really…wanted to leave that badly?

Sayo: …I’m so-!

-Laito stabs her from behind. His brothers stare in shock. She glances back to see him smirking at her as he pulls the knife out

Sayo: Laito…! You…bastard…

-Reiji reaches out to catch her

Reiji: Sayori! Laito, what have you done?!

Laito: Nfu~ Just a little punishment is all. She betrayed us. I ran into her after she left you at the cafe back then…she was planning on leaving us for Kou-kun. But then there was that whole misunderstanding…and she ran far away into the forest~ If Kou-kun didn’t come along, she probably would have left us a long time ago, you know? So this is just what she deserves. 

Kanato: Well…he isn’t wrong.

Subaru: Like hell! You didn’t have to kill her!

-Ayato and Shu can only stare in shock as she continues to bleed out. Subaru moves to be at her side with Reiji

Reiji: Sayo! Can you hear me? Please…say something…

Sayo: I’m…sorry…Reiji…Subaru. I did…miss you two…

Subaru: Che…

-Subaru grabs onto her hand, squeezing it tight

Sayo: Tell Kou…I still love him…
