Monologue

The months passed by.  Winter in the forest was prettier than I could have imagined. Every time I went out, I always found something new to admire.  Spring was beautiful, with all the flowers blooming and wildlife emerging.  Leaving everything and starting over was hard at first, but I had come to love it here.  I was able to talk to my friends all the time and Meguri and I had become very close. We considered each other family at this point.  The guests who stayed at the inn were all nice, so I enjoyed my job as well.  And now summer has almost come… I had been waiting for this practically since I had moved here. 

-Sayo is talking to her friends on her cellphone

Sayo: Have you guys decided when you’re coming to visit yet?

Kisa: Duh! Of course we have!

Rena: Fufu…We’ve been talking about it for weeks. 

Lei: Tetsuo is going to take us the first Monday of summer break. So in two weeks!

Sayo: That’s awesome! I’m excited to see you guys. We’re going to have so much fun. I’ve found things for us to do in the town nearby as well. 

Kisa: Hell yeah! 

Emi: There’s some new recipes for sweets I want to try! We should all bake together!

Lei: Fufu…It will be a crowded kitchen, but I’m sure we can make that work. 

Sayo: The kitchen should be big enough for all of us…

Kisa: Think there will be fish in that river? I wonder if I could catch one with my hands…

Rena: Haha…! I’ll bet you would fall in trying!

Kisa: I would not!

Sayo: Fufu…There are fish but I don’t recommend trying to fish with your hands Kisa. 

Lei: Fufu…This is going to be a lively summer. 

Emi: It will be so much fun!

Rena: Oh…! Gotta get going, guys. My mom needs me. Let’s talk later?

Kisa: Sounds good!

Sayo: Talk to you guys later, then. 

Rena: Alright, see ya!

-The girls say their goodbyes before hanging up

(I’ve got some free time…Maybe I should tidy up my room a little…)

-Sayo begins cleaning her room. When she reaches her dresser, her eyes land on a small wooden chest with a flower design carved into it

(I haven’t looked at this in a long time…Meguri gave it to me when I said I wanted to find something to keep a few personal items safe…She said it was something a guest left behind and she didn’t need it.)

-She opens the chest, revealing the purikura photos she had taken with Kou, along with the ring he gave her

(The purikura photos I took with my friends are displayed on my wall…and I wear the necklace Rena gave me…But I decided I couldn’t display his photos or wear the ring anymore, not even on the necklace. Not if I want to move on from that part of my life…so I put them all in here. I haven’t looked inside in a long time…)

-She sits down on her bed with the chest in her hands, reminiscing on the times she spent with Kou, his brothers, and the Sakamaki brothers

(Yeah, there were a lot of bad times…but there were good moments…And I do miss them from time to time…)

-She reaches to the very bottom of the chest. Underneath everything is a small piece of paper with Kou’s number and the number for the Sakamaki house phone written on it

(I remember…I wrote these both down shortly after I came here…I was having a really hard night and I questioned if this was really a good idea or not…so I decided to write down their numbers before I forgot them in case I ever needed them in the future.)

Sayo: I am kinda curious how they’re all doing…

(I can’t call Kou…If I call him and he gives me some kind of plausible explanation for what happened back then, I might question my resolve…But maybe…)

-She stands up, grabbing the piece of paper and putting it in her pocket

(I can’t call them from my phone or the Inn’s phone. But there is a payphone on the street outside the Inn.)

-She goes outside to the payphone and uses it to call the Sakamaki mansion. It rings a few times before someone picks up

Reiji: Hello. This is the Sakamaki residence. Reiji speaking. 

(It’s Reiji…! I expected it to be one of the house servants…If it was, I was just going to hang up…I know I called, but now I don’t know if I’m actually prepared to talk to him or not…)

Reiji: Hello? Speak now or I am hanging up the phone.

Sayo: Fufu…You’re acting like usual, so guess you seem to be doing alright after all. 

Reiji: Sayo…! Do not hang up the phone!

Sayo: You knew it was me so quickly?

Reiji: I know your voice, Sayori. If you thought you could call without us realizing it was you, you are sorely mistaken. 

Sayo: I didn’t. I didn’t really have much of a plan, to be honest. I found this number as I was going through my things and was wondering how everyone was doing. I was going to hang up if it was a servant. I didn’t really expect one of you to answer. 

Reiji: You saved our household number…?

Sayo: I did…I hope you guys are doing well. I do admit that I miss you and Subaru sometimes. Ayato, and even Laito at times too…

Reiji: Where are you? I will come and bring you home right away. 

Sayo: Reiji, this is my home now. I’m sorry for running away. I had the opportunity to go, and after everything with Kou, I just couldn’t live my life like that anymore…

Reiji: And what about your promise to become my bride so that I can take over as the successor?!

Sayo: You know I never promised you that, Reiji…I had been planning on leaving the whole time…I always said I didn’t plan on marrying any of you. There were good times, Reiji. Those would be the reason I came back, not marriage. But I can’t live my life like that anymore. So I’m staying where I am.

Reiji: Sayo…What do we have to do so that you will return? 

Sayo: …I’m sorry, Reiji…There isn’t anything. 

Laito: Sayo-chan…? Is that really you?

Sayo: Laito…?!

Laito: I was passing by and forced Reiji to give me the phone when I heard your name…! Do you have any idea what you’ve put us through? How long we searched for you? But we couldn’t find anything…

Sayo: Of course not…I didn’t want to be found. 

Laito: Why…?! Why would you leave us?! 

Sayo: I wanted my life back. I wasn’t going to let it be controlled by vampires.

Laito: …Just come home, Sayo-chan. Can’t we move past that?

Sayo: It’s not something we can move past, Laito. I’m not coming back. I don’t want to. I’m sorry. You guys never got a proper goodbye. I know it’s late…but goodbye. I really do wish you all well. 

Laito: Sayo-chan, don’t go…!

Reiji: Don’t you dare hang up, Sayori!

-Sayo hangs up the phone. She takes a step back, staring up at the sky for a moment

Sayo: I’m sorry…but I’ve moved on…

-When she is back in her room, she puts the paper with the phone numbers on it back in the chest. She then takes the chest and places it in her closet. After opening her window, she rests her arms on the windowsill, leaning out the window slightly

Sayo: Summer is coming…It’s going to be so much fun.

-All thoughts of the vampires that were previously a part of her life were gone as she brainstormed ideas of fun things for her and her friends to do while they were visiting

Let’s go into some more detail about each death and estimation calculations.

Deaths are listed chronologically by manga appearance. “S” means it was self-inflicted with intention. They have to be the ones to cause the fatal blow (aside from one exception, being Izumi throwing herself in front of a car). Assisted suicide, like Tanaka stabbing Satou as a demonstration, does not count as self-inflicted.

+5,880 for deaths while in captivity. Some were already included, but it pales in comparison to the total count. Tanaka was probably subject to experiments everyday. Let’s assume 3 deaths per hour (accounting for setup time and various death methods), 8 hours in a working day, and 245 working days in a year (Japanese work duration from Google). Which means in 10 years that’s 5,880 deaths. This is a very VERY general approximation, not taking into account probable overtime, lengthier experiments resulting in slower deaths, or extremely fast causes of death like getting shot. Regardless, with 10 years of captivity, Tanaka’s death toll is certainly the highest.

I don't think he would ask Tanaka to help given him being freshly released from lab experiments. Nekozawa calls him “a valued client”, it’s implied he’s done this before. Satou needed guns to save Tanaka, but aside from that we don’t know how many times he’s done this. Let’s just add another 30 deaths on top of the 10.

+540 for deaths from repeat killings by SAT. I imagine the SAT encounter until Satou’s recovery was quite fast and lasted at most 5 minutes. Killing Satou at a rate of 2 shots per second means 600 deaths in 5 minutes. Let’s subtract 60 (half a minute of deaths) to account for moments when SAT was distracted by Takahashi’s sniping.

+15 for deaths from fighting with SAT offscreen. Satou is a power house. He takes out at least 5 people for every death of his own. Slapping on an estimated extra 15 deaths from this fight since he was still tuckered out by the end.

+3 for deaths from fighting gang members (chapter 47). Though unarmed against a group of 100+ men, Satou would probably make quick work of these guys since they seem mostly untrained. Slapping on an estimated extra 3 deaths.

+50 for deaths from fighting Iruma Air Base soldiers (chapter 55-57). I’ve had enough of this dude. Let’s just add 50 more for his fight against the army base soldiers since they are highly trained, killing him without restraint, and there are a lot of them. Satou is also visibly weary by the end of it.

But let's be generous and say Kei either lucked out with calmer waters or manages to stay afloat for longer. So he drowns at a rate of 1 death per hour. Let’s also say Kei was confused and his estimation of being adrift for a week was off (downing consecutively will do that to a man), and he was only in the water for 3 days. I also don’t think he would be floating around for a week, especially if he didn’t make it out of Tokyo Bay.

To account for extra training, rest time, and Kou generally not feeling up for dying on repeat, we’ll assume out of the two weeks, Kou only used 10 days. Where am I getting these numbers? My gut tells me so (source: trust me bro).

Short drop hanging takes 10-20 minutes for complete brain death. Let's take the middle road and say 15 minutes. So on average, 4 deaths per hour. 4 x 5 x 10 = 200 deaths.

Sayo's Route: Ecstasy Epilogue

Sayo's Route Masterlist

-At the Mukami manor, Kou is making his way down to the kitchen. He begins looking through the fridge in hopes of finding something to snack on to distract himself from the craving he has for Sayo’s blood. Ruki comes in from the living room

Ruki: Kou. You left your phone in the living room last night. 

Kou: Oh, did I? Thanks, Ruki-kun. 

Ruki: It looks like you got a call. 

-Kou looks at the screen, noticing a missed call and voicemail from an unknown number

Kou: Looks like it. Probably from some fan who got a hold of my number. I’ll deal with it later.

Ruki: Didn’t you give your number to Sayo? She’s only able to use payphones, isn’t that right? 

Kou: Oh…guess you’re right. 

-He opens his call history and plays the voicemail

Sayo: Hey Kou…I guess you aren’t awake right now…I won’t have the opportunity to call again, so this has to be it. I just want you to know a few things…I’m really glad we met. Thank you for reminding me what a normal life is like…and for all those times we had fun together. I stuck around…because I enjoyed the times we spent together.

I didn’t mean to, but I overheard you and your brothers talking about that girl Eve you guys were comparing me to. I don’t really understand all of it, but I’m sorry I couldn’t take her place. I held off on using my escape plan when I had the chance…but I decided it’s time after hearing that…

I want you to know that those silly purikuras we took…and the ring you gave me will always be my treasures…Goodbye, Kou. Tell your brothers goodbye for me as well.

-Kou stares at the phone in disbelief

Kou: Wait…Sayo-chan…? There’s no way…

-He grips his phone almost tight enough to crush it as he starts yelling

Kou: You idiot! Eve wasn’t somebody else! Eve was you the entire time! How did you not see that?! You…you can’t be…gone…

-Ruki places a hand on his shoulder

Ruki: Calm down, Kou. No matter what she said about her plan, don’t assume she can just disappear.

Kou: R-Right…

Yuma: Let’s go see those Sakamaki bastards. They might know somethin’. 

-The two look over to see Yuma and Azusa standing in the doorway

Azusa: We heard everything…We’ll help you find her, Kou. 

Kou: Thanks, guys…

Ruki: Yuma is right. Let’s go talk to the Sakamakis. 

-Kou nods, and the four get ready to leave

*Timeskip*

-Kou throws open the door to the living room of the Sakamaki mansion

Kou: Where is she?!

-The Sakamaki brothers are all gathered, and have been discussing Sayo’s disappearance. They were already on edge, and their uninvited house guests only annoyed them even more

Laito: Well now…We thought she had run away with you. How cold Sayo-chan is…

-Laito sighs before sending Kou a taunting smirk

Laito: She left you even though you were so close~

-Kou glares, taking a step forward with clenched fists. Ruki places a hand on his shoulder to stop him

Ruki: Do you have any idea where she went?

Laito: You don’t know? Seems you weren’t as close as I thought.

Kou: Tch…bastard…

Reiji: Haah…Sayo was never very open with us. We sent familiars to check to see if she was with you, but obviously that isn’t the case. We were just discussing going to her hometown to investigate. That is the only place we think she might go. 

Ruki: We would like to find her as well, so we are going with you. It will be better for you to have more people looking, correct?

Reiji: …Fine. Do as you wish.

Shu: Searching is too much of a pain…The rest of you can go. 

Kanato: I won’t be going either. That girl has some nerve to run away from us. I couldn’t care less if you find her dead on the side of the road. It would serve her right after leaving, right, Teddy?

Reiji: Haah…As you wish. The two of you stay behind, then. The rest of us will go to her hometown to search for her. It’s best if we split up once we are there to make the best use of our time. A group can go to her old school, another to the church she lived at. Hopefully we either find her, or we find clues to her whereabouts. 

Kou: I don’t know if it will be that easy…She told us that she’s had an escape plan since shortly after she came here, and that it’s taken so long because she wanted to make sure she could disappear without anyone finding her. 

Subaru: Did she say anything else about it?

Kou: No. I asked, but she told me she couldn’t disappear if someone knew the details of her plan. 

Reiji: Either way, the church and her old school are the only places we know of that she had ties to as of right now. We may uncover more once we are there. Now are the rest of you coming?

-Some nod, others simply follow Reiji out of the house to the limo the Sakamaki family used

Ayato: What are we going to do about her school? Think people will still be there? 

Reiji: We are early enough that faculty will most likely still be there when we arrive. There may be some students around as well staying after for extracurriculars. If not, we will have to come back another day at an earlier time. 

Subaru: Sayo is smart…If she’s really trying to disappear, do you think we’ll find anything? 

Reiji: Smart or not, she is still only human. 

*Timeskip*

-The limo drops Reiji, Ruki, Laito, and Kou off at Sayo’s old school first. Reiji takes the lead, asking the lady in the office if they can meet with the principal to talk about a former student. She is a bit skeptical of the request, but asks the principal if he can meet with the group before escorting them back to his office

Principal: You’re friends of Makina Sayori-san, are you? She was a wonderful student. I was sad to see her go. She would have accomplished great things, I’m sure. How is she doing at her new school? 

Reiji: She still earns high marks. 

Principal: That is good to hear. She was always good at balancing her academics and personal life. She was a quiet girl at times, but when she was together with her friends, she would light up. Their energy was contagious. From what I saw, her and her group of friends were fairly popular. Other students liked how friendly they were.

Kou: She had four close friends, right? What are their names?

-The man looks over the group for a moment, Kou’s question causing some suspicion

Principal: ….Why have you come to see me today? You said you are friends of Makina-san, but I cannot reveal the names of her friends to you.

Reiji: Sayori has gone missing. We are simply trying to help find her. We thought her old friends might be able to help. 

Principal: I am deeply sorry to hear that. I understand your concern, but you all are just students. Please leave the detective work to the police. Thank you for coming to see me, but I think it’s best you return home. I will see you out. 

-The group is forcibly led out of the school by the principal

Laito: What now…?

Ruki: I saw a few students around. We can ask them if they knew Sayo. We might be able to find out who her friends were that way. 

Reiji: Let’s go then. 

-The group sneak back in so that they can question the group of students they saw

-Meanwhile, the limo has dropped off Subaru, Ayato, Yuma, and Azusa at the church Sayo used to live at. Subaru approaches the first nun he sees

Subaru: Hey. Is Makina Sayori here?

Young Nun: You’re looking for Sayori-san? I haven’t heard her name in so long…

Yuma: So then she didn’t come back here…

Young Nun: No, I’m afraid she’s not here. Why? Are you looking for her?

Ayato: Yeah. She’s gone missing. 

Young Nun: That’s terrible…Unfortunately, I doubt she would return here. She was rarely here even when she lived here. She really only used it as a place to sleep. She would leave for school early and return late. On her days off, she was always out with friends. Normally those who live here assist in some way, but she didn’t get along well with the head nuns…When they realized she wasn’t going to change, they gave up on her and were fine with her being out of the way. 

Yuma: So she spent a lot of time with friends? Do you know who they are?

Young Nun: I do not. They did not come visit her here. The head nuns thought they must have been bad influences…Sayori-san did have an interest in weapons and fighting, after all…I think that started with a self defense class she took with one of them when she was young…

Azusa: I see…

Young Nun: I would try her old school if you are looking for her friends. They might know more.

Subaru: Thanks…

Yuma: Should we head back to Ruki and the others?

Ayato: There’s nothing else we can do here.

-The limo takes them back to the school. The group find Reiji and the others waiting outside of the school grounds

Ruki: Did you find anything out at the church?

Yuma: Nothing. The nun we talked to told us there’s no way she would go back there. 

Subaru: They told us her school might know more because she spent all her time with her friends. What did you guys find out?

Reiji: We were able to speak to the principal, but he refused to tell us anything. We tried asking around on our own after that, but weren’t able to find anything out. 

Ayato: The hell? So this has been a waste of time? Where else are we supposed to look for her?

Ruki: If we can find out the identity of her old friends, we might be able to get somewhere, but unless we can find someone who knows at the school, we’re out of luck. 

Azusa: Why don’t we try again…? We might…be able to find someone…if we all ask around…

Kou: Good idea, Azusa! There’s gotta be people here that we missed. Let’s split up and ask anyone we can find. 

Ayato: Guess that’s all we can do…

*Timeskip*

-Everyone has met back up by the school gate

Ruki: Did anyone find out who her friends are?

-Azusa shakes his head sadly 

Yuma: Hell, people blew me off more than anything or didn’t know who I was talking about.

Subaru: So I wasn’t the only one…?

Ayato: Why the hell is everyone acting so suspicious?

Kou: Everyone I talked to ignored my questions and wanted to talk about my idol work instead…

Reiji: We are outsiders to this school…Maybe that is what is making them so suspicious?

-A boy walks up to them

Student: I’m tired of seeing you guys waste your time. Give it up. Nobody is going to help you. 

Ayato: The hell? Why not?

Student: Everyone wanted to know what happened to Sayo when she suddenly left the school. So when her friends found out it was because she was sent off to live with a bunch of guys she doesn’t like so that she can marry one of them, they told some people and it spread around the school. 

People care about Sayo. She was quiet sometimes but she was nice and her and her friends were fun to hang around. And now we have a bunch of guys from out of town going around asking who her friends are. Everyone who knows thinks you guys are the ones she lives with.

After you came around the first time, people started talking. The running theory is that she left and now you’re looking for her. Well, if she doesn’t want to be with any of you, none of us want to help you. So scram, will ya?

Subaru: Why, you…

Reiji: Let’s go. It’s clear we aren’t going to get anywhere like this. 

Ruki: I agree. 

-Reiji and Ruki walk away, so the others begrudgingly follow

Kou: Everyone was refusing to help on purpose…?

Ayato: Never thought Sayo was that popular…

Laito: She’s a lot different with us than she was back when she was here…

Kou: Because you all made her miserable…

Ayato: What was that?!

Reiji: Enough. Now is not the time to argue. Let us go back to the limo so we can sit down and think of our next move. 

-The group take their seats inside the limo. It’s silent for a moment

Subaru: What even is there to do now…? The only things we knew about Sayo’s past are this school and the church. Both are dead ends.

Reiji: Are you saying you just want to give up?

Laito: Tch…Do you honestly believe I’ll let you?

Subaru: That ain’t what I’m saying! I just meant we don’t have any clues left! We have no idea where the hell she might have gone! And we don’t know who her friends are, so we can’t ask them what they know! 

Yuma: The only thing I can think of is to go around the town and see if we can pick up her scent anywhere…

Reiji: That is the only thing we can do until someone comes up with a better plan or we stumble upon more clues. 

Ayato: Should we split up again? 

Reiji: That would be the most logical. 

Ruki: No need to waste anymore time. Let’s go. 

-The group split up to search the town. They all meet back up at the limo hours later with the same defeated expressions

Kou: Did anyone find anything?!

Ayato: Tch…You think we would have come back here like this if we had?

Reiji: I know that certain people here are very impatient and want to find her, but I believe this is all we can do for tonight. We should return home. 

Laito and Kou: But-!

Ruki: Kou…he’s right. We’ve been to the places she has connections to and searched the town trying to pick up her scent. She isn’t here. Reiji is right. We should go back and try to come up with a new plan. 

Kou: …Fine.

Reiji: …Then let us return. 

Monologue

The time I had with my friends flew by.  We had all kinds of fun around the inn, along with out in the forest.  Some were things we used to do all the time, others were new things that were a promise to do again the next time they came to visit.  Before I knew it, it was time for them to return home. 

-The girls are gathered in the lobby of the inn to say their goodbyes. Kisa is clinging to Sayo

Kisa: I don’t want to leave you here all alone! Are you sure you can’t just come back and live with one of us?

Sayo: I would love that…but it’s the first place those guys are going to look for me. 

Rena: I get that…but aren’t you being extra cautious? You make it seem like they’re super evil dudes who will drag you back kicking and screaming…

Sayo: That’s because they definitely would…

Lei: Sayo needs to do what she’s most comfortable with. It won’t be good for her health if she’s walking around always terrified they’re going to find her, right? This way, she’s somewhere they wouldn’t even think to look. 

Emi: That’s true…It’s not good to always be living in fear. 

Sayo: Exactly. And who knows, after enough time passes, I might be able to come back. I can’t imagine they’ll look for me forever. 

Kisa: I guess that’s true. 

-Tetsuo comes back inside after loading the luggage in his car

Tetsuo: You girls ready?

Kisa: No!

-Kisa clings to her tighter. Emi gives her a hug as well

Sayo: It’s alright, guys. You can visit and I’ll be able to talk to you on the phone as much as I want! I’ve already talked to Meguri about getting a cellphone once I save up some of my wages. 

Rena: We’ll start a group chat and talk all the time!

Lei: That’s a great suggestion. 

Kisa: Okay, okay…I’m fine now. 

-Kisa and Emi let her go so Lei and then Rena can give her a hug goodbye. When Rena lets go, she picks up Sayo’s hand, looking at the ring that’s still on her finger

Rena: I see you’re still wearing it.

Sayo: Yeah…I haven’t decided what to do yet…

Rena: Here.

-Rena unclasps a thin gold necklace she’s been wearing. There’s a small, gold rose charm on it

Rena: Have this. If wearing it on your finger gets to be too much, but you still want to wear it, you can put it on the necklace. 

-Sayo smiles, giving her another hug

Sayo: Thanks, Rena. I’ll take really good care of it. 

-Rena winks at her with a grin

Rena: No problem~! What are friends for, right?

Sayo: Fufu…Right. 

-Sayo and Meguri walk out with everyone, telling them goodbye once more as they get into Tetsuo’s car. They wave as the group drives away

Meguri: I know it’s hard to say goodbye to the people you care about…but they’ll be back soon. And like you said, you can talk to them on the phone as much as you want. 

-Sayo feels tears coming on and wipes her eyes preemptively before smiling at Meguri

Sayo: I know. This isn’t really goodbye. It’s just until next time. 

Meguri: Shall we go inside? I’ll make us some tea. 

Sayo: That would be great. 

Monologue

And so, I followed Meguri inside, ready to start my new life.  Tea time with Reiji would be replaced with tea time with her.  Magnificent flower gardens would be replaced with a beautiful, vast forest.  The school and mansion libraries would be replaced with a bookshelf in my room and the small town library nearby. Academics would be replaced with cleaning and assisting the guests of the inn.  And there would be no more families of vampires.
