The dichotomy was incredible. In a few short years society was clawing its way back from the Tragedy. Like a weed. It hadn't sprouted up everywhere. People would always reminisce about their former lives. Try to force their view of a 'proper' society. Just seeing them milling about was disgusting. Her world was different. An endless wasteland of despair.

The schadenfreude kept her going. These dumbasses had no idea what was coming for them. That soon their rekindled hopes would plunge back into an even deeper despair.

She shook her head. Pleasure can wait. Down to business.

It wasn't just a general disdain for this place that had drawn her here, but a truly disturbing report. One that simply made no fucking sense and she needed to see with her own eyes to believe.

Junko Enoshima... was alive? And had 'reformed?'

The mere thought felt like a needle in her throat. Every single word was impossible. It had to be a lie. It was absolutely a lie. Some desperate ramble from a Future Foundation goon trying and failing to save his own skin.

Still, she had to admit, the woman she saw through her binoculars certainly looked like the old photos of Junko Enoshima. Seeing her face... It sent a cold feeling through her entire being. The long-suppressed fingers of the Phantasm, rattling the bars of its metaphorical cage. She grit her teeth.

She watched the so-called Junko Enoshima for a while and finally made her move when she left her home for a while. She would bear witness to this utter blasphemy with her own eyes. She let herself in and waited for her target to return home. She had an urge to ransack the place, but resisted. No, she would much rather talk to her. See her.

She tugged at the hood over her head. Of course she didn't show up dressed to the nines. This was low profile. Sensitive. All of her stuff was packed safely in her backpack.

When Junko finally did return, She did something her former self would never have done. She looked her dead in the eyes and smiled.

"Hi. You probably don't remember me, but we went to school together. Junko, right? I'm... You can call me Akira."

Despite her commitment to her role, she still couldn;t help but watch her for a reaction. To analyze. To pick apart her natural reaction to this uncanny moment. The Phantasm coiled around her heart, starving from years of neglect. An actress must have a certain curiosity. A desire to understand the people around for. For Akira Jikonashi, it was more like a hunger. A need to fully embody another person. To fill her blighted, empty soul with the essence of another. She'd never expected to see her favorite subject again. The question hung in her mind. Who would consume who?

Had to merge the images so that I could fit them in one post (damn the image limit). Also I hope that the style at least looks consistent throughout since there's been some gaps between drawing each one.

I'll work on their intros and maybe even make a prediction card for funsies.

After the intros, I'll focus on writing. After I finish writing, I'll go to cgs. Maybe I'll work on some cgs in the middle of writing to satisfy my drawing itch but a majority of them will be drawn after the fact. I'm excited to finally shift my focus on to this part of the fangan.

Some updates on writing:

I've already written up to chapter 11 and I have two cases, but I wanted to rewrite the deadly life and trials. I've already changed the clues and stuff for the first case to make it work for a better mystery and I still have the trial to write again.

The third might be the hardest for me to write because of what I want to do with it (which I'm not revealing because spoilers) but I hope I'll be able to figure something out and make it good soon.

I hope to make the characters' personalities shine more. I'm going to shift their personalities a little bit and probably even speech patterns to make them more distinct... and also easier to tell apart when I'm not tagging every single line of dialogue.

I also have another fangan planned but I haven't even named the characters for it yet, and don't plan to do more with it until after I finish this one. Some things aren't for sure so I'm not saying the title yet.

Eden of the East

THIS WAS SO COOL. This is the best representation of America in anime that I've ever seen. It doesn't just feel like a weird reflection of America, it feels genuine. Even down to the squirrels and crows. The opening scene was insane too, really good hook into the show. I didn't think I'd laugh so hard when she asked him if he as cold and he was just like "yeah". Also obviously happy about the great black characters and American characters that actually have American voice actors. Little things like that help sell the setting. It's almost kind of surreal, since I'm not used to such relatively accurate portrayal of America in anime. Seeing anime tropes and acting in an unmistakably American setting is a strange experience. Also, I said "taxi driver?" as soon as Akira did the pose, so I ended up saying it at the same time as him, which was also really funny.

I do struggle to find what to talk about in this post themes-wise unfortunately. The show is really interesting, and it's clear there's some commentary on terrorism with the missile attacks and whatnot, but I can't find anything significant to mention. I look forward to hearing about what people think in class though.

"Work Culture" by Sugimoto in The Cambridge Guide to Modern Japanese Culture was also a good read. It's really something to see how culture is molded and put in place and kept there by different facets of society. It's a struggle everywhere, and it really can especially be seen in work culture. In Japan's case it seems like the changes such as deregulation that came with economic restructuring postwar had a lot of effect on the development of their present work culture, though it's been changing for the better in recent years.
