Pixiv for Beginners

(Note: I wrote this for finding Jack Jeanne art but most of it is usable for finding Japanese fan art in general, including for other otome series)

Pixiv is a website primarily for Japanese speakers for both fan art and fanfic, both of which generally fit under the umbrella of "doujinshi" (同人誌). This word sometimes has connotations of being nsfw (r18) but there’s a lot of content that is cute fluff and all-ages (全年齢). 

While most of the content on the site is in Japanese, the site interface has an English version that makes it pretty easy to sign up and use. You can find the English site here: https://www.pixiv.net/en/

Mobile users can also find an app version: iOS | Android

Make an account like you would with any other site. Pretty standard.

Once you’re registered and logged in, you can start searching. For Jack Jeanne art, good tags to start with are ジャックジャンヌ and JACKJEANNE (all caps). You can choose to limit results to all ages, r18 only, or both. 

The ‘top’ tab gives you some of the best entries in the tag. Illustrations are likely the most useful category for non-Japanese speakers. Manga is, well, manga (machine translating these would require some sort of OCR program) and novels is the category it uses for fanfiction. The text is readable by browser machine translators and is compatible with automatic JP-EN dictionary lookup apps like Yomichan. Unfortunately, the pixiv search and tag features are not on the level of depth of something like AO3 but you can search for ship tags or specific character names. 

You can like and follow both creators and works both publicly (short click/tap) or privately (click/tap and hold).

The most popular JJ ships are between the main LIs + Kisa in the following order: Neji, Fumi, Mitsuki, Sou, Kai, Suzu (see previous post of JP ship names). But all of the characters have decent followings so you can usually find things, even for the side characters. I’ll attach the full list of character names in Japanese under the read line since this post is already pretty long. You can search for any of these on pixiv or even just Google and will likely find something. Here is a character list with images (JP).

Generally, you can find character name lists by searching the name of the game in Japanese (Wikipedia or VNDB can help you out) + キャラ一覧.

I brought this idea up on discord once upon a time after listening to Kenji Nojima as Mitsuki Akika sing Candy one too many times...It’s hard to find songs that suit some of the characters’ voices (ESPECIALLY for Kagemaru).

Ones that didn’t work out the most imo: Toichiro, Oji, Kagemaru, Aizen

List 10 songs you’ve been listening to the most and tag ten people

I was tagged by @kanda-the-butterfly and thank you so much for it! I adore these little tag games and I love adding a bit of “myself” to my otherwise monothematic tumblr accounts!  Also, you could not possibly tag me at a better time. Regarding the current circumstances, this tag will beautifuly showcase my most recent object of unhealthy obsession. Since I’m talkative annoying, let me add a bit of commentary to some ot the songs listed below. 

1. TRIGGER - Secret Night  bOI, am I head over heels for this whole concept! Don’t know whose idea it was to take 3 of one of my literally top favourite seiyuus, and without a shadow of doubt not only mine, team them up, give them IRESSISTIBLE designs and make them sing suggestive, to say the least, songs but may gOD guide your steps. TRIGGER is a dream come true.  PS: Souma’s voice is the embodiment of velvet, you can’t change my mind

2. TRIGGER - Heavenly Visitor 

3.  ŹOOĻ  - LOOK AT This IS a OBLIGATORY thing for any Kimura Subaru fan! ! And for anyone who has good taste in music tbh! I seriously pray there will be a HypMic song with Ichiro actually singing!  I don’t really know Yuuya Hirose-san who voices the main vocalist but his voice is absolutely a d d i c t i v e and, what more, unique. Have to look up more of his works! I haven’t gotten to the part in the game where  ŹOOĻ is actually introduced yet, so I’m extremely excited to hear his voice-acting in the game in general! 

4. ŹOOĻ - Poisonous Gangster What more to add omg, Kimura Subaru, Yuuya Hirose, whom I’m in love with already, and on top of that Nishiyama Koutaro AND Takashi Kondou??? I’m at a loss for words here.  

5. ŹOOĻ - ZONE OF OVERLAP 

Alright thEN, moving right pass the Idolish7 territory (even though I still have a lot of checking out to do when it comes to the songs and units and sub-units and individual tracks aAAAA) 

6. Ben Howard - Black Flies  I’m a total sucker for angst stories both reading them and writing them and this simply is such a fitting song! It sets the atmosphere just right, and, when writing, is incredibly inspirational.  I actually recently finished the book A little life, which I highly recommend, if you are in a good place mentally!, and found this song in one of the many playlists made for the book! 

7. Daughter - Smother  Exactly the same case as with Black Flies! 

8. /cover/ Mitsuki Akika (CV: Kenji Nojima) - Koshitantan (Waiting for a Chance to Pounce) Kenji Nojima is my no. 1 favourite seiyuu and Koshitantan is among my top 10 Vocaloid songs, so what I’m trying to say is: this is heaven itself.  ((I have to check out the anime omg))

9. Mad Trigger Crew - Shinogi (Dead Pools)  No explanation needed here. Still not over this and will never be. ♥ (Also! Let’s open a discussion here: do you think that super gentle s o f t voice that joins Samatoki’s at 0:39 is also Asanuma-san just in his regular range?? Because if that is the case, then oOF♥

10. /cover/ Aho no Sakata - Autophagy  THIS! I love songs like these! Reminds me a lot of syuudo’s, which I consider to be my favourite vocaloid composer, pieces so much. I’ll have to make sure to check out other songs produced by Hiiragi Kirai.  Plus, of course, I love Sakata!

Actors : Songs Connection - Review

So, hi, I guess I’m doing this again! This will be a short review for a 12 episode anime, called Actors : Songs Connection. This anime show in particular started in October 6, 2019 and ended in December 22, 2019. According to this show’s My Anime List page, it’s genre is considered to be School and Music. I have a bit of a different opinion regarding this, but I’ll talk about it later on.

I personally enjoyed quite a lot watching this anime. At first, the reason why I picked it up was because I was looking for an idol-ish anime with cute boys and so on, and I found this one. It wasn’t what I thought it was going to be, since it started in a quite pessimistic note, with the news that Saku Otonomiya’s sister, Nozomi Otonomiya, was close to dying due to a disease (it isn’t specified, I believe). He had started going as well to Tenshou Private School and was quite introverted throughout more than half of the show.

The main characters, besides Saku, are Sousuke Kagura and Uta Outa, two friends who compose songs, mostly using vocaloids. This was also something that peaked my interest quite a lot as I’ve been a fan of Vocaloids like Hatsune Miku, Luka Megurine and Gakupo Kamui for many years now and it was quite different for me to catch a show that would actually mention this type of “media”, I suppose.

Regardless, Saku, Sousuke and Uta form this trio, after many attempts of getting close to the first boy and trying to convince them to join. After the group is formed, they actually start to gain quite a following since Saku’s voice is, to be honest, quite magnificent. His voice actor, Gakuto Kajiwara, is marvelous at singing, despite his most popular character being Asta from Black Clover (possibly one of the most annoying characters out there).

The truth is, the show could have just been about this. Three boys getting to know each other and creating music along the way. Actors : Songs Connection decided to do so much more, that is a bit hard for me to even say which genre this anime belongs too. It has a bit of everything, to be fair.

While the days go on, Saku’s environment, this meaning school and neighbourhood, see an increasing amount of stray cats lurking around. Besides this, there’s this story that his older sister (the one who’s ill) told him previously about white shadows or white figures, resembling humans with only eyes and no mouth who seem to be maid of almost dust-like material. These shadows can only be seen by a few like some characters will sometimes note. Saku and Nozomi are a few of them, Akika Mitsuki and Harumoto Keishi are also aware of these creatures and what they are. A few others have seen them, but most only see them as myths and such things. These white figures are actually online players who are, I suppose, playing a virtual game where Saku, Sousuke, Uta and the others around them are in. This becomes extremly hard to explain as the show goes ahead.

The concept in itself isn’t anything new, someone who thinks they are a real person is actually a character in a video game is a trope used quite a lot. However, Actors : Song Connections fails at this, as the characters don’t realize what’s going on at all, they have no idea what’s happening throughout the entirety of the twelve episodes. The only person inside the game who seems to know more or less what’s happening is Akika Mitsuki. The rest, apart from Harumoto Keishi who controls more or less what happens in district 7 (where everyone in this anime lives), have no idea where or what they are.

This part is, with all honesty, done in a very sloppy way. Everything is rushed and the show barely focus in this important issue of it’s own universe. Some things aren’t explained either, like what happens to Mike Enjouji in Episode 7.

The music is actually really good. The intro is a very energetic song called Titania, performed by Sakutasuke, also known as the voice actors Gakuto Kajiwara (already mentioned before), Yuya Hozomi - Uta’s v.a and finally Wataru Urata, Sousuke’s v.a. My favourite song is Cloudy Day, sung by Saku Otonomiya. It’s such a beautiful song and the first I listened to it, or when it first played in the anime, it gave me so many goosebumps. It’s an amazing song and Gakuto Kajiwara’s voice sounds lovely. The original version, sung by a vocaloid, can be found here. Another favourite of mine is Yoshiwara’s Lament, sung by Mike Enjouji’s voice actor (Yuuki Ono). It’s so beautiful and fun and it fits very nicely with what’s going on in that episode. I believe the original song has the same name, but is sung by the vocaloid TETO KASANE. Waggaki Band has a wonderful rendition of it, as well.

Regardless, this isn’t exactly a bad show. It just isn’t great, for example, the animation has some great moments but goes downhill the exact same way. However, if you want to watch a musical anime with a bit of a plot twist, Actors : Songs Connection is the way to go.
