fav thing about them: oh i think his death scene is WONDERFULLY poetic . i havent gotten there yet but i know the synopsis and i just think the symbolic potential is so fucking good . feel bad saying "lmao when he died" bc i feel like it implies i dont like him hes my fav character 💔 i just think his death is real interesting

i genuinely don’t know how people can dislike akechi, like, did they not play through the entire game? on a lesser not idk how people don’t ship akechi and akira bc i thought even from a storytelling aspect that was very in your face obvious. but i seriously don’t get it and i don’t know the reasoning people can even have to dislike him?? i feel like i’m missing something like how can you play the game and still be like “yes, that teenager is the villain.”

I feel like a lot of it comes from people like, building up this hatred for an unidentified villain that the game reveals doesn’t really exist in the way the thieves assume?

like, we’re initially led to believe that the black mask is basically adachi 2.0 and killing for the fun of it. a lot of ppl mock how the Akechi twist was pulled off so badly, but I don’t think atlus meant for the twist to be it being Akechi, necessararily, but for it to be that he had an actual, legitimate motive that the thieves could empathize and relate to

but ofc, the problem is that _kechis writing turned out fucking awful since they cut his palace and confidant. they didn’t..... really know what to do with him in game and it ended up with people thinking that him around Shido is his “true self” when the whole point is not even Goro knew who he really was and was never given a chance to find out!

so u have all these ppl who probably weren’t too fond of Goro’s whole ‘pleasant boy’ shtick, then they get the lazy ‘actually he’s CRAZY’ twist, and then you get the ‘wait no he’s just very traumatized and got groomed by shido to do this shit’

and instead of like. admitting they were wrong about Goro actually being evil they’re trying to say atlus is just trying to profit off him or w/e and like. yeah, I’m sure his popularity (he consistently ranks higher than any other party member or even other game protags in Japan! he’s beloved!!) has influenced them to keep bringing him back, but it’s also kind of obvious they like..... initially intended for him to survive.

he has a mouse model, he has battle dialog specifically written for Loki along with an alt warn sign, we have data from his scrapped palace. his stuff probably got cut for time due to the hiatus and them already being incredibly late on the game. and then he ended up being the most popular character in the game and an overall persona fan favorite

like it’s....... it’s pretty clear Goro’s real characterization is closest to him in Sae’s palace. Still very faux polite, but also attention seeking, somewhat aggressive, cunning, excitable, unaware of social norms, and with a tendency towards cynicism. this is consistent in the anime, proof of justice, and pq2! but ppl still try to make him adachi 2 electric boogaloo

also yeah like........ it’s. it’s pretty obvious goro is supposed to have romantic feelings towards akiren like I’m not sure why this is considered debatable. I’m not entirely convinced Goro himself is even aware it’s romantic but like, sitting in ur acquaintance’s cafe/apartment until they get home and then smiling at them and word vomiting about ur trauma isn’t exactly cishet dude behavior

tldr: they decided they hated him before even knowing what his motives were and now can’t use their one braincell to admit they were wrong and stop victimblaming

sorry for going akechicourse on main but grief psychologically doesn't care about objectively how shitty someone is. Haru having complicated feelings toward how she feels about Akechi is 100% a reasonable and sound thing regardless of objectively how shitty her dad is. She saw him die in quite a disturbing way while she was still processing her feelings on her father. Saying Haru forgives Akechi or implying she is a bad person for not forgiving him is uh,,, bad lmao.

I def think his looks and the fact that he's popular with women and shipped with Joker is a big reason dudebros hate him. I saw one say they would like him more if he was "badass" like the guy in Hitman. Its not morality, its that Goro "lost" and had messy human feelings. If he was a male power fantasy hitman killing on behalf of a fridged girlfriend or his kids, they wouldn't mind because its an accepted male fantasy.

which..... makes sense. goro appeals to wlw and nb people bc his entire plot is about someone who forces themselves to act nonthreatening and kind to avoid abuse, while also secretly freaking out and trying to make those same people fear him. he’s constantly swinging back and forth between fawning towards his abusers to get them to leave him along and fighting back so they suffer too and learn to fear him

which ofc, there are some cis men who can relate to that but overall. wlw and trans people (and esp trans wlw) are probably going to have the most extreme response of just. relating to that sort of thing.

there’s also ofc the fact that goros mom was a single mother trying her hardest and generally I’ve noticed that men tend to assume she was abusive towards goro more than women and nb people in fanworks? which I feel like shows another issue with men in fiction often blaming their mothers for trauma when the father was at fault- and going by poj, goro doesn’t blame his mother for what happened. he understands that she was a victim of shidos abuse and that she was genuinely trying to be a decent mother. he doesn’t ever suggest that his mother was cruel towards him, he only speaks fondly of her

tldr: goro akechi isn’t cis or het so naturally cishet men hate him and I want to fight them all. not everything is about ur boring man pain. goro akechi is a gays only character everyone else go home

Since ppl don't notice unless its in their face, the Okumura thing would be better if we saw one of his exploited workers. Maybe people would stop forgetting he killed and hurt people if Haru had to be confronted by someone whose life her father ruined. But we cna't have the PT question their morality. Akechi bad, everyone connected to PT is good. Harus dad didn't hurt a character players cared about so ppl ignore it.

hot take: goro akechi isn't even a villain. he's more an antagonist and "the rival" and there's lines proving akiren sees him as a rival and he gives a shit about him. "villain" fits guys like shido and kamoshida more in the story.

ur so damn right like. he’s the main antagonist in the sense that he causes conflict for the team and gives akiren a rival but he’s not. evil or even necessarily against what the team is doing

he’s meant to show another view of the thieves actions, the danger inherent in what they’re doing. he’s a foil to the whole team and meant to make both themselves and the player question the morality of the thieves and what could’ve happened if they took their abusers on without support

but ofc ppl would rather an easy, clearly wrong villain who gets defeated/redeemed by the heroes than a morally gray antag who makes the heroes look in the mirror and question themselves

oh yeah, i totally agree about the jail thing. like even irl people know how corrupt it is, and its just as corrupt in japan. the fact that people want an abuse victim to be abused more by the system and think its a good story makes me ill tbh :/ the game shows you police brutality, so they know it, they just think abuse is justified if its goro suffering which i don't know how much to blame the game for making ppl lean that way, or just if i should blame haters being that petty.

I feel like it’s partially an issue of goros backstory just being so rushed so ppl don’t. get a chance to really process what a nightmare his life was (combined w goro not realizing the extent to which shido was abusing him). the game..... literally directly states that even if you don’t forgive goro, he’s not the person you should be blaming. haru literally says to shidos face that he’s the one who killed her father yet ppl overlook it bc like. ig it’s easier to hate the gnc gay trauma victim who genuinely wants to hurt his abusers like they’ve hurt him

and again, what’s majorly suspicious to me is how little we’re seeing of okumura and shido. every other palace seems to be getting decent screen time in the teasers, and ig it could be bc there’s not really any awakenings in them but it’s still.... odd

I’d also like to point out that if you look in the New Years scenes, there’s an odd gap right in the center. where a person could be standing. it’s possible they hadn’t finished goros animations? or he shows up late or smth. idk it’s interesting to me with how everyone is standing

lol god ppl trying to force goro to be some komaeda (he isn't, outside of being an antagonistic character with a crush on protag) or just have everyone hate him like. i kind of blame the localization since you can tell from the atlus usa tweets they want to play up him being a hated character, while in the original his voice and his lines just sound like a regular polite teen. anyway fics that make everyone hate him bc the author is projecting that onto all the characters are my pet peeves tbh!

My opinion with Haru is she's not a real person. She's written to forgive her abusive dad not because the writers want to be respectful, its because they think good victims forgive their abusers. I think people shouldn't be afraid to ask why its written that way, and why Akechi's refusal to forgive Shido is the thing people see as making him too far gone. Even fics have him guilted for not forgiving Shido. P5 lets the abusers off the hook.
